Commercially supplied inoculation wires have a guaranteed chemical composition but not the size and distribution of individual phases, which are very important for nucleation. Therefore, two commercial alloys used for the inoculation of Al-Si alloys (AlTi3B1 and AlTi5B1) are investigated in this paper. The emphasis is placed on their structural analysis and the size and distribution of individual intermetallic phases. Furthermore, the grain refinement effect will be tested by adding these alloys to the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy and testing the optimal amount of added inoculation wires. The results showed that the size and distribution of the individual phases in AlTi3B1 and AlTi5B1 meet the requirements for the successful inoculation of aluminum alloys, the intermetallic phases based on the TiAl3 phase are fine enough, and there is no agglomeration that would reduce the number of nuclei. This assumption was confirmed by adding these inoculants to the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy, and it was found that the most ideal amount of inoculants added is 0.01 wt % when the structure was refined by approximately 32%. Abstract: Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 is a new promising multiferroic compound in which the existence of electric polarization is conditioned by the noncollinear arrangement of the iron spins. In principle, ferroelectricity might be present above the room temperature, but electrical conductivity prevents its observation at temperatures higher than ≈130K. Our recent calculations showed that the electronic structure and in particular the conductivity is strongly influenced by relative fractions of iron and zinc in the tetrahedral sublattice of the spinel block in corresponding Y hexaferrite structure. In this paper, we show that the same holds for the exchange interactions. Dependence of the exchange integrals on the distribution of iron and zinc in the tetrahedral sublattice of the spinel block and on the content of Sr in Ba2− x Sr x Zn2Fe12O22 system is calculated using the ab initio approach with an improved treatment of strongly correlated 3d electrons of iron ions. Aims: We asked how geological substrate affects the distribution of plant species between forest interiors, forest edges, and steppe patches in the forest–steppe landscapes. Specifically, we sought for the presence of the edge effect at the forest–grassland transitions on different substrates. Location: Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and western Ukraine. Methods: We recorded the occurrence of vascular plant species in forest interiors, at forest edges and in steppe patches on 40 forest–steppe sites located on four substrates (andesite, dolomite, limestone and loess). We compared the distribution of species diversity, beta diversity (using multivariate analysis), the number of shared species between habitats and the estimation of vegetation biomass among forest‐steppe habitats on different substrates. Results: The edge effect was observed on hard rocks, while it was absent on loess, where the ecotone species richness was intermediate between that of forest and steppe. Loess sites also had the lowest species turnover between forest and steppe and the lowest number of edge specialists. Conclusions: Substrate has a strong effect on the formation of forest–steppe mosaics. It shapes the assembly rules and plant community diversity within individual habitat mosaics. Plant communities on each substrate can respond differently to changing climate. The strong assembly rules on hard rocks may be more likely to result in species loss than on loess or similar soft sediments, where a larger number of species find their optimum in more than one forest–steppe habitat. The geoid-to-quasigeoid separation is often computed only approximately as a function of the simple planar Bouguer gravity anomaly and the height of the computation point while disregarding the contributions of terrain geometry and anomalous topographic density as well as the sub-geoid masses. In this study we demonstrate that these contributions are significant and, therefore, should be taken into consideration when investigating the relation between the normal and orthometric heights particularly in the mountainous, polar and geologically complex regions. These contributions are evaluated by applying the spectral expressions for gravimetric forward modelling and using the EIGEN-6C4 gravity model, the Earth2014 datasets of terrain, ice thickness and inland bathymetry and the CRUST1.0 sediment and (consolidated) crustal density data. Since the global crustal density models currently available (e.g. CRUST1.0) have a limited accuracy and resolution, the comparison of individual density contributions is-for consistency-realized with a limited spectral resolution up to a spherical harmonic degree 360 (or 180). The results reveal that the topographic contribution globally varies between $$-$$ 0.33 and 0.57 m, with maxima in Himalaya and Tibet. The contribution of ice considerably modifies the geoid-to-quasigeoid separation over large parts of Antarctica and Greenland, where it reaches $$\sim $$ 0.2 m. The contributions of sediments and bedrock are less pronounced, with the values typically varying only within a few centimetres. These results, however, have still possibly large uncertainties due to the lack of information on the actual sediment and bedrock density. The contribution of lakes is mostly negligible; its maxima over the Laurentian Great Lakes and the Baikal Lake reach only several millimetres. The contribution of the sub-geoid masses is significant. It is everywhere negative and reaches extreme values of $$-$$ 4.43 m. According to our estimates, the geoid-to-quasigeoid separation globally varies within $$-$$ 4.19 and 0.26 m while the corresponding values computed according to a classical definition are only negative and reach extreme values of $$-$$ 3.5 m. A comparison of these results reveals that inaccuracies caused by disregarding the terrain geometry and mass density heterogeneities distributed within the topography and below the geoid surface can reach $$\pm $$ 2 m or more in the mountainous regions. Integral transforms of the disturbing gravitational potential derived from satellite altimetry onto satellite gradiometric data are formulated, investigated and applied in this article. First, corresponding differential operators, that relate the disturbing gravitational potential to the six components of the disturbing gradiometric tensor in the spherical local north-oriented frame, are applied to the spherical Abel-Poisson integral equation. This yields six new integral equations for which respective kernel functions are given in both spectral and spatial forms. Second, truncation error formulas for each of the integral transforms are provided in the spectral form. Also expressions for the corresponding truncation error coefficients are derived. Third, practical estimators for evaluation of the disturbing gravitational gradients are formulated, and their correctness and expected accuracy are investigated. Finally, the practical estimators are applied for validation of a sample of the gradiometric data provided by the GOCE satellite mission. The gravitational field of the Earth reflects Earth's surface mass redistribution and its inner structure and dynamics. Satellite gravimetry techniques have been used to observe the Earth's external gravitational field and its temporal variations on a global scale. The global gravitational models from satellite gravimetry, typically in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients, are crucial in geodetic, geodynamic, geophysical, hydrological, glaciological, oceanographic, and many other geoscience applications. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of theoretical definitions describing relationships between the spherical harmonic coefficients and different satellite gravimetry observables such as orbital perturbations in terms of satellite positions, velocities, and accelerations; satellite-to-satellite range rates; and gravitational gradients. Products and applications of the Earth's static global gravitational models are presented and discussed in the context of determination of the gravimetric geoid and physical heights, gravimetric and isostatic crustal thickness, bathymetric depths, glacier bedrock relief, sediment thickness, geostrophic and eddy currents, Earth's inertia tensor and dipole, precession and nutation parameters of the Earth's rotation, and prediction of the satellite orbital geometry. Furthermore, applications and advances of the Earth's time-variable gravitational models for monitoring large earthquakes, hydrological mass transport, Earth's rotation parameters, and vertical crustal motions (due to the glacial isostatic adjustment and other phenomena) are presented. The preferential formation of phases in Ni–Al, Fe–Al, and Ti–Al systems was observed at the interface of solid-solid and solid-liquid phases. It was found that phases already formed at temperatures lower than the melting point of aluminum. The Ni 2 Al 3 , Fe 2 Al 5 and Ti 2 Al 5 phases formed preferentially in the Ni–Al, Fe–Al and Ti–Al systems, respectively. The favored formation was not associated with thermodynamic assumptions, but was caused by crystal structures of arisen phases. The mentioned phases could form due to the two reasons, (i) similarities of their lattice parameters to lattice parameters of the individual elements (Ni, Fe, Ti, or Al) and (ii) the total volume of its lattice. The lattice volumes of Ni 2 Al 3 , Fe 2 Al 5 , and Ti 2 Al 5 phases are always smaller than that of NiAl 3 , FeAl 3 , and TiAl 3 phases. The last listed phases are ordinarily accepted by other authors as the phases, which form preferentially based on thermodynamic data only. This work disproves such claims and shows the reason for preferential phases' formation. In the last few decades, satellites have acquired various potential data sets hundreds of kilometers above the Earth's surface. Conventionally, these global magnetic and gravitational data sets are approximated by using spherical harmonics that allow straightforward work with both fields outside the Earth's mass. In this article, we present an alternative approach for working with potential data in mass-free space given over a regular coordinate grid on a spherical surface. The algorithm is based on an iterative scheme and the Poisson integral equation for the sphere. With help from the Fourier transform, global potential (magnetic or gravitational) data can efficiently be continued from a mean orbital sphere down to a reference surface without using the spherical harmonics. This is illustrated both with simulated magnetic field data and with real data from the satellite gradiometry mission GOCE. In the case of simulated magnetic data and the downward continuation for 450 km, we have achieved a root mean square at the level of 0.05 nT, while it was <1 E (eotvos) for real GOCE data continued for 250 km. Abstract: Our work deals with the problem of evaluation of the spherical surface parameters from the discrete set of measured data points. We propose a new linear method for determination of the center and the radius of curvature of the measured spherical surface. Such method can be used for evaluation of the measurements obtained from both contact and noncontact 3D coordinate measuring machines. We perform an analysis of the proposed sphere fitting method and we verify that the obtained results are comparable to results calculated using existing techniques. Finally, the proposed algorithm is implemented for evaluation of real measurements of spherical optical surfaces using the designed scanning chromatic confocal system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aim: The first comprehensive checklist of European phytosociological alliances, orders and classes (EuroVegChecklist) was published by Mucina et al. (2016, Applied Vegetation Science, 19 (Suppl. 1), 3–264). However, this checklist did not contain detailed information on the distribution of individual vegetation types. Here we provide the first maps of all alliances in Europe. Location: Europe, Greenland, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Cyprus and the Caucasus countries. Methods: We collected data on the occurrence of phytosociological alliances in European countries and regions from literature and vegetation‐plot databases. We interpreted and complemented these data using the expert knowledge of an international team of vegetation scientists and matched all the previously reported alliance names and concepts with those of the EuroVegChecklist. We then mapped the occurrence of the EuroVegChecklist alliances in 82 territorial units corresponding to countries, large islands, archipelagos and peninsulas. We subdivided the mainland parts of large or biogeographically heterogeneous countries based on the European biogeographical regions. Specialized alliances of coastal habitats were mapped only for the coastal section of each territorial unit. Results: Distribution maps were prepared for 1,105 alliances of vascular‐plant dominated vegetation reported in the EuroVegChecklist. For each territorial unit, three levels of occurrence probability were plotted on the maps: (a) verified occurrence; (b) uncertain occurrence; and (c) absence. The maps of individual alliances were complemented by summary maps of the number of alliances and the alliance–area relationship. Distribution data are also provided in a spreadsheet. Conclusions: The new map series represents the first attempt to characterize the distribution of all vegetation types at the alliance level across Europe. There are still many knowledge gaps, partly due to a lack of data for some regions and partly due to uncertainties in the definition of some alliances. Aim: To analyse the biogeographic patterns of Temperate Deciduous Forests (TDFs) in Western Eurasia based on different life‐forms and forests layers and explore their relationships with the current climate, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate and topography. Location: Western Eurasia. Taxon: Vascular plants. Methods: We delimited nine regions encompassing the variability of TDFs in Western Eurasia and collected 1000 vegetation plots from each. We deconstructed the plant communities into three layers, tree, shrub and floor. We used (i) generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to analyse the influence of current climate, historical climate and topography on species richness by accounting for regional effects and (ii) redundancy analysis (RDA) with variance partitioning to describe the variation in life forms along abiotic gradients. The three forest layers were analysed jointly and separately. Results: The Balkans, Alps and Carpathians appeared to be the richest in plant species, whereas the British Isles and the Hyrcanian region were the poorest. Annual temperature range and annual mean temperature were the best predictors of species richness for the whole dataset and for the shrub layer. The tree layer richness was mainly explained by the annual temperature range and by elevation, whereas the forest floor richness was more related to the annual temperature range and the annual mean temperature differences between the LGM and current climate. The current climate was the main predictor of the composition of the whole community, the tree layer and the floor layer, while the shrub layer was also influenced by historical climate. Main conclusions: Our overview of the diversity of temperate deciduous forests in Western Eurasia demonstrates different patterns and drivers across life‐forms and forest layers. While the diversity of trees is mainly linked to current climatic conditions, the shrub layer is also driven by postglacial‐glacial climatic stability, suggesting a different origin from forest trees. Abstract: Rapidly solidified aluminum alloys are promising materials with very fine microstructure. The microscopy observation of these materials is complicated due to overlay of fcc-Al matrix and different intermetallic phases. A possible way to solve this problem is to dissolve the Al matrix. By this process powder formed by single intermetallic phase particles is obtained. In this paper a new aqueous based dissolving agent for Al-based alloy is presented. We compute globally the consolidated crust-stripped gravity disturbances/anomalies. These refined gravity field quantities are obtained from the EGM2008 gravity data after applying the topographic and crust density contrasts stripping corrections computed using the global topography/bathymetry model DTM2006.0, the global continental ice-thickness data ICE-5G, and the global crustal model CRUST2.0. All crust components density contrasts are defined relative to the reference crustal density of 2,670 kg/m. We demonstrate that the consolidated crust-stripped gravity data have the strongest correlation with the crustal thickness. Therefore, they are the most suitable gravity data type for the recovery of the Moho density interface by means of the gravimetric modelling or inversion. The consolidated crust-stripped gravity data and the CRUST2.0 crust-thickness data are used to estimate the global average value of the crust-mantle density contrast. This is done by minimising the correlation between these refined gravity and crust-thickness data by adding the crust-mantle density contrast to the original reference crustal density of 2,670 kg/m. The estimated values of 485 kg/m (for the refined gravity disturbances) and 481 kg/m (for the refined gravity anomalies) very closely agree with the value of the crust-mantle density contrast of 480 kg/m, which is adopted in the definition of the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM). This agreement is more likely due to the fact that our results of the gravimetric forward modelling are significantly constrained by the CRUST2.0 model density structure and crust-thickness data derived purely based on methods of seismic refraction. We analyse spatial and spectral characteristics of various refined gravity data used for modelling and gravimetric interpretation of the crust-mantle interface and the mantle-lithosphere structure. Depending on the purpose of the study, refined gravity data have either a strong or weak correlation with the Moho depths (Moho geometry). The compilation of the refined gravity data is purely based on available information on the crustal density structure obtained from seismic surveys without adopting any isostatic hypothesis. We demonstrate that the crust-stripped relative-to-mantle gravity data have a weak correlation with the CRUST2.0 Moho depths of about 0.02. Since gravitational signals due to the crustal density structure and the Moho geometry are subtracted from gravity field, these refined gravity data comprise mainly the information on the mantle lithosphere and sub-lithospheric mantle. On the other hand, the consolidated crust-stripped gravity data, obtained from the gravity field after applying the crust density contrast stripping corrections, comprise mainly the gravitational signal of the Moho geometry, although they also contain the gravitational signal due to anomalous mass density structures within the mantle. In the absence of global models of the mantle structure, the best possible option of computing refined gravity data, suitable for the recovery/refinement of the Moho interface, is to subtract the complete crust-corrected gravity data from the consolidated crust-stripped gravity data. These refined gravity data, that is, the homogenous crust gravity data, have a strong absolute correlation of about 0.99 with the CRUST2.0 Moho depths due to removing a gravitational signal of inhomogeneous density structures within the crust and mantle. Results of the spectral signal decomposition and the subsequent correlation analysis reveal that the correlation of the homogenous crust gravity data with the Moho depths is larger than 0.9 over the investigated harmonic spectrum up to harmonic degree 90. The crust-stripped relative-to-mantle gravity data correlate substantially with the Moho depths above harmonic degree 50 where the correlation exceeds 0.5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The extent of thermal template (tetra-propyl-ammonium: TPA+) removal from a silicalite-1 layer by heating in air was investigated. While a temperature of 330°C was sufficient to eliminate all N-containing template species from the surface region of the layer (i.e., within a depth of ≉10nm), their complete elimination from the bulk even at 550°C was not achieved. This was caused by a series of reactions proceeding at high temperatures, involving the products of TPA+ thermal degradation. A substantial amount of C-containing template species remained in the sample even after a thermal treatment at 550°C. A role the SiO2 phase of low organization present in the silicalite-1 layer plays in the retention of the products of thermal degradation has been proposed. Additionally, the stability of TPA+ irradiated by microwaves was examined. Only minor morphological changes of the layer upon thermal template removal were revealed by atomic force microscopy. This work describes carbides present in the tool steel containing 2.5% C, 3.3% Si, 6.2% Cr, 2.2% Mo, 2.6% V, 2.6% Nb, 1.0% W, prepared by the powder metallurgy (PM) process. The influence of thermal treatment conditions on carbide behavior is investigated. During austenitization, some dissolution of M7C3 occurs, while MC carbides are thermally stable. So, the quenched steel is composed of two types of carbides: chromium rich M7C3 and niobium rich MC, besides martensite and retained austenite. During tempering of the hardened steel at the temperatures above 480°C, the precipitation of very fine carbides and martensite recovery occur, which results in secondary hardening. • Ti-Al-Si-X (X˭Co, Cr, Fe, Mo, Nb, Ni) alloys prepared using mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering. • Alloys have fine-grained and homogeneous microstructure with low porosity. • Alloyed elements increased hardness and compressive strength values. Intermetallic alloys based on Ti-Al-Si system are significant for their excellent high-temperature properties, especially for resistance against oxidation and for achieving good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. The main problem of these materials is high brittleness at room temperature. In the previous work, selected alloying elements were added into the Ti-Al-Si alloys prepared by reactive sintering, but the properties did not meet the requirements for subsequent use in the automotive or aerospace industry, since the materials had a very porous microstructure. Here, the addition of cobalt, chromium, iron, molybdenum, niobium and nickel into the TiAl15Si15 alloy prepared by mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering is tested and it is expected to improve the mechanical and high-temperature properties. In this paper, the Ti-Al-Si alloys have been assessed on basis of microstructure, phase composition, mechanical and tribological properties, such as hardness, fracture toughness and compressive strength. Cyclic oxidation tests were performed for 400 h at the temperatures of 800 and 1000 °C. The cyclic oxidation tests simulate industrial processes, where the material is alternately exposed to elevated temperature and subsequent cooling (eg, engine components). It has been empirically known that the coercivity of rare-earth permanent magnets depend on the size and shape of fine particles of the main phase in the system. Also, recent experimental observations have suggested that the atomic scale structures around the grain-boundaries of the fine particles play a crucial role to determine their switching fields. In this article, we review a theoretical attempt to describe the finite temperature magnetic properties and to evaluate the reduction of the switching fields of fine particles of several rare-earth permanent magnet materials based on an atomistic spin model that is constructed using first-principles calculations. It is shown that, over a wide temperature range, the spin model gives a good description of the the magnetization curves of rare-earth intermetallic compounds such as R 2 Fe   14 B ( R =Dy, Ho, Pr, Nd, Sm) and SmFe   12 . The atomistic spin model approach is also used to describe the local magnetic anisotropy around the surfaces of the fine particles, and predicts that the rare-earth ions may exhibit planar magnetic anisotropy when they are on the crystalline-structure surfaces of the particles. The dynamical simulation of the atomistic spin model and the corresponding micromagnetic simulation show that the planar surface magnetic anisotropy causes a reduction in the switching field of fine particles by approximately 20-30%, which may be relevant to the atomic scale surface effects found in the experimental studies. The 24CrNiMo alloy steel powder was used as experimental material. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-deposited, quenched and tempered (QT) and stress-relief annealed (SR) specimens were analyzed. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the specimens in the three states were mainly ferrite (α-Fe), in which the as-deposited samples had puny face-centered cubic (FCC) structure Fe (γ-Fe). The microstructure observation showed that the as-deposited specimens were made up of ferrite, granular bainite, a small amount of cementite and residual austenite. The tensile test results indicated that the tensile strength and yield strength of the as-deposited specimens were 1199 MPa and 1053 MPa respectively, and the elongation at break was 10.7%. The elongation of QT and SR specimens increased to 11.6% and 12.8%, respectively. The electron backscattered scattering detection (EBSD) analysis results showed that the small-angle grain boundary content of the as-deposited samples was 58%, and large-angle grain boundary content was 15%. After QT and SR, small-angle and large-angle grain boundaries were obtained than those in the as-deposited specimens. The high-temperature friction and wear properties and thermal fatigue performances of the QT and SR specimens were improved significantly. The QT specimens had the smallest wear and thermal fatigue crack lengths, excellent resistance to friction and wear performance and prevention of crack growth, with an ideal comprehensive properties. Aim: The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation‐plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation‐plot database, and compile statistically‐derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location: Europe. Methods: We developed the classification expert system EUNIS‐ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set‐theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species‐to‐habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results: Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man‐made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Conclusions: EUNIS habitats were characterized for the first time in terms of their species composition and distribution, based on a classification of a European database of vegetation plots using the newly developed electronic expert system EUNIS‐ESy. Only differential thermal analysis at low heating rates or mathematical modelling have been used to determine Fe–Al phase formation reactions up to this day. In this work, Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis high-speed reaction was analysed during extremely high heating rates using scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in this work. Samples, whose chemical composition corresponded to FeAl phase, were sintered at heating rate of 300 °C/min, the highest heating rate applied so far. The course of heating was observed by optical pyrometer with sampling rate of 0.02 s. Pre-combustion peak (diffusion stage) was identified in the alloy prior steep combustion peak corresponding to SHS reaction itself. Accordingly to the temperature development, a FeAl phase formed initially allowing to react with aluminium and forming Fe 2 Al 5 phase. Furthermore, the later mentioned phase partially reacted with aluminium resulting in a presence of metastable FeAl 3 phase. Resulted microstructure was composed of only FeAl phase. This is completely reverse order of phase formation as was presented in previous studies focusing on lower heating rates where Fe 2 Al 5 formed first during diffusion stage followed by the formation of FeAl at SHS reaction. The phase composition and portion of individual phases in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) CP1000 and DP1000 was studied by complementary microscopic and diffraction techniques. CP1000 and DP1000 steel grades have a high strength-to-density ratio and they are used in many applications in the automotive industry. The microstructure of the CP1000 "complex phase" steel consists of ferrite, bainite, martensite and a small amount of retained austenite. DP1000 is a dual phase steel, which has a structure of a ferritic matrix with islands of martensite and a minor amount of retained austenite. The influence of selected etchants (Nital, LePera, Beraha I, Nital followed by metabisulfite, Nital followed by LePera, and Nital followed by Beraha I) on the microstructure image is described. X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and light optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used in this work for advanced characterization of the microstructure and phase composition. Hydrogen diffusivity and trapping have been studied in two advanced high strength steel grades and model samples using electrochemical permeation test. Microstructures of CP1000 and DP1000 steels consist of ferrite, martensite and a small fraction of retained austenite. In addition, bainite is present in CP1000. Model phases with predominance of a particular phase have been prepared by specific heat treatment. DP1000 has shown the lowest diffusivity among all materials, while ferritic model sample has shown the highest. The study is devoted to the intermetallic alloy FeAl20Si20 (wt.%) with the potential applications in high temperature aggressive environments. The samples of the same chemical composition were prepared by spark plasma sintering from the different mechanically alloyed powders (pure elements and pre-alloyed powders). Differences in mechanical properties were characterized. Whereas no significant differences were found in hardness and Young's modulus, fracture resistance was higher for the samples from pre-alloyed powders in which Palmqvist and lateral cracks were observed (contrary to the sample made of pure elements where only Palmqvist cracks were identified). Until recently, the information about the topographic density distribution has been limited to only certain regions and some countries, while missing in the global context. The UNB_TopoDens is the first model that provides the information about a lateral topographic density globally. The analysis of this model also reveals that the average topographic density for the entire continental landmass (excluding polar glaciers) is 2247 kg m−3. This density differs significantly from the value of 2670 kg m−3 that is typically adopted to represent the continental upper crustal density. In this study, we use the UNB_TopoDens density model to inspect how the topographic density variations affect interpretational properties of Bouguer gravity maps. Since this model provides also the information about density uncertainties of individual lithologies (main rock types), we estimate the corresponding errors in the Bouguer gravity data. Despite a new estimate of the average topographic density corresponds to relative changes of ∼16 per cent in values of the topographic gravity correction, these changes do not affect interpretational properties of Bouguer gravity maps. The anomalous topographic density distribution (taken with respect to the average density of 2247 kg m−3), however, modifies the Bouguer gravity pattern. We demonstrate that the gravitational contribution of anomalous topographic density is globally mostly within ±25 mGal, but much large values are detected in Himalaya, Tibet, central Andes and along the East African Rift System. Our estimates also indicate that errors in the Bouguer gravity data attributed to topographic density uncertainties are mostly less than ±15 mGal, but in mountainous regions could reach large values exceeding even ±50 mGal. Unarguably, the UNB_TopoDens model provides an improved information about the global topographic density variations and their uncertainties. Nevertheless, much more in situ measurements of rock density samples together with detailed 3-D geological models are still necessary to understand better the actual density distribution within the whole topography, particularly to mention a density change with depth. Aims: Western Podolia is one of several regions in the Eurasian forest-steppe zone where diverse steppe vegetation has been relatively well preserved. Our aims were to describe compositional turnover of steppe vegetation along different environmental gradients, to identify the patterns of species richness and evenness across complete compositional gradients and to outline biogeographical links of Western Podolian forest-steppe, with the emphasis on the generally rare mesic steppe types. Study area: Western Podolia and adjacent regions of Western Ukraine. Methods: Two independent datasets of vegetation plots and environmental variables were classified using modified TWINSPAN and ordinated using DCA and CCA. Diagnostic, constant and dominant species were identified. Ecological elements were quantified using Didukh indicator values. Biogeographical analysis was based on an extensive review of literature and NMDS of species frequency data sourced from studies covering a large part of Central and Eastern Europe. Results: The main gradients in species composition correspond to ecological gradients of 1) topographically controlled moisture and nutrient availability and 2) disturbance and human impact. The first gradient ranges from low-productive dry stands dominated by narrow-leaved tufted grasses, through dry-mesic stands co-dominated by broad-leaved grasses and herbs, to highproductive dry-mesic to mesic stands co-dominated by tall herbs and broad-leaved grasses. The second gradient tends towards communities altered by intensive human use. Species richness of steppe grasslands may be extremely high and has a unimodal relationship with estimated productivity. It peaks at mesic sites, in places with high evenness of species abundances. Conclusions: The remaining steppe fragments in Western Podolia are nowadays partly burnt, partly grazed, rarely mown and partly unmanaged. They harbour a number of rare light-demanding species and species reaching their distributional limits within the study area. This work aims to describe the mechanism of intermediary phases formation in TiAl20 (wt. %) alloy composition during reactive sintering. The reaction between titanium and aluminum powders was studied by in situ diffraction and the results were confirmed by annealing at various temperatures. It was found that the Ti2Al5 phase formed preferentially and its formation was detected at 400 °C. So far, this phase has never been found in this alloy composition during reactive sintering processes. Subsequently, the Ti2Al5 phase reacted with the titanium, and the formation of the major phase, Ti3Al, was accompanied by the minor phase, TiAl. Equations of the proposed reactions are presented in this paper and their thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility are supported by Gibbs energies of reaction and reaction enthalpies. Aim: Climate is an important factor controlling plant distributions. However, it is not yet fully understood how climate interacts with human impacts or whether the effects of these factors differ between native and alien species. Facing ongoing climate change and urbanization, we explore the effects of climate on plant species richness and composition across European cities. Location: Sixty cities in Western, Central and Southern Europe. Taxon: Vascular plants. Methods: Species presence was recorded in seven habitats in each city. Large‐scale climatic gradients were derived from 22 climatic variables using a partial principal component analysis that controlled for the effects of human population size and gross domestic product. The effects of climate and habitat type on the numbers of native and alien species were tested using linear mixed‐effect models. The native and alien compositional variation across cities and habitats was analysed using principal component analysis with variation partitioning. Results: The Mediterranean‐to‐temperate climatic gradient had a significant effect on species numbers across all habitats. The numbers of both native and alien species increased from the Mediterranean to temperate Europe. Within each city, the proportion of alien species decreased from highly urbanized to less urbanized habitats. Climate had a stronger effect on the composition of alien plants than on the composition of native plants. The native species composition especially changed from the Mediterranean to temperate cities and alien species composition also from oceanic to continental cities. Main conclusions: Urban native and alien species richness follow the pattern found for the whole European flora. Based on this observation, we suggest that the future shift of warm and dry conditions from the Mediterranean to the north that is expected under global change scenarios could affect richness and change the composition of European urban floras. This paper represents a milestone in the UNB effort to formulate an accurate and self-consistent theory for regional geoid determination. To get the geoid to a sub-centimetre accuracy, we had to formulate the theory in a spherical rather than linear approximation, advance the modelling of the effect of topographic mass density, formulate the solid spherical Bouguer anomaly, develop the probabilistic downward continuation approach, incorporate improved satellite determined global gravitational models and introduce a whole host of smaller improvements. Having adopted Auvergne, an area in France as our testing ground, where the mean standard deviation of observed gravity values is 0.5 mGal, according to the Institute Geographique Nationale (Duquenne in Proceedings of the 1st international symposium of the international gravity field service "gravity field of the earth", International gravity field service meeting, Istanbul, Turkey, 2006), we obtained the standard deviation of the gravity anomalies continued downward to the geoid, as estimated by minimizing the L2 norm of their residuals, to be in average 3 times larger than those on the surface with large spikes underneath the highest topographic points. The standard deviations of resulting geoidal heights range from a few millimetres to just over 6 cm for the highest topographic points in the Alpine region (just short of 2000 m). The mean standard deviations of the geoidal heights for the whole region are only 0.6 cm, which should be considered quite reasonable even if one acknowledges that the area of Auvergne is mostly flat. As one should expect, the main contributing factors to these uncertainties are the Poisson probabilistic downward continuation process, with the maximum standard deviation just short of 6 cm (the average value of 2.5 mm) and the topographic density uncertainties, with the maximum value of 5.6 cm (the average value of 3.0 mm). The comparison of our geoidal heights with the testing geoidal heights, obtained for a set of 75 control points (regularly spaced throughout the region), shows the mean shift of 13 cm which is believed to reflect the displacement of the French vertical datum from the geoid due to sea surface topography. The mean root square error of the misfit is 3.3 cm. This misfit, when we consider the estimated accuracy of our geoid, indicates that the mean standard deviation of the "test geoid" is about 3 cm, which makes it about 5 times less accurate than the Stokes–Helmert computed geoid. Reactive sintering is currently considered as a promising production route for titanium aluminides in many research works. However, the published descriptions of the reaction mechanism are contradictory or lacking, especially at the temperatures below the melting point of aluminium. This work aims to fill this gap, providing the description of the reactive sintering process at the temperatures between 400 and 900 °C. The phases' formation sequence and reaction kinetics were studied and explained using experimental model (Ti/Al diffusion couple) and real reactively sintered samples of equiatomic Ti-Al compressed powder blend. Moreover, phase formation was thermodynamically assessed. It was revealed that Ti 2 Al 5 phase formed preferentially. This phase has not been reported previously as a starting phase in reactive sintering. According to results obtained by experimental model, its formation is controlled by diffusion at 700 °C. This phase reacted with aluminium forming pure TiAl 3 phase or with titanium, resulting in TiAl phase. Subsequently, TiAl phase reacted with titanium, leading to the Ti 3 Al phase, or with already present Ti 2 Al 5 phase yielding TiAl 2 intermetallic compound. In terrestrial studies, Bouguer gravity data is routinely computed by adopting various numerical schemes, starting from the most basic concept of approximating the actual topography by an infinite Bouguer plate, through adding a planar terrain correction to account for a local/regional terrain geometry, to more advanced schemes that involve the computation of the topographic gravity correction by taking into consideration a gravitational contribution of the whole topography while adopting a spherical (or ellipsoidal) approximation. Moreover, the topographic density information has significantly improved the gravity forward modeling and interpretations, especially in polar regions (by accounting for a density contrast of polar glaciers) and in regions characterized by a complex geological structure. Whereas in geodetic studies (such as a gravimetric geoid modeling) only the gravitational contribution of topographic masses above the geoid is computed and subsequently removed from observed (free-air) gravity data, geophysical studies focusing on interpreting the Earth's inner structure usually require the application of additional stripping gravity corrections that account for known anomalous density structures in order to reveal an unknown (and sought) density structure or density interface. In planetary studies, numerical schemes applied to compile Bouguer gravity maps might differ from terrestrial studies due to two reasons. While in terrestrial studies the topography is defined by physical heights above the geoid surface (i.e., the geoid-referenced topography), in planetary studies the topography is commonly described by geometric heights above the geometric reference surface (i.e., the geometric-referenced topography). Moreover, large parts of a planetary surface have negative heights. This obviously has implications on the computation of the topographic gravity correction and consequently Bouguer gravity data because in this case the application of this correction not only removes the gravitational contribution of a topographic mass surplus, but also compensates for a topographic mass deficit. In this study, we examine numerically possible options of computing the topographic gravity correction and consequently the Bouguer gravity data in planetary applications. In agreement with a theoretical definition of the Bouguer gravity correction, the Bouguer gravity maps compiled based on adopting the geoid-referenced topography are the most relevant. In this case, the application of the topographic gravity correction removes only the gravitational contribution of the topography. Alternative options based on using geometric heights, on the other hand, subtract an additional gravitational signal, spatially closely correlated with the geoidal undulations, that is often attributed to deep mantle density heterogeneities, mantle plumes or other phenomena that are not directly related to a topographic density distribution. Four solutions of the spherical gravitational curvature boundary-value problems can be exploited for the determination of the Earth's gravitational potential. In this paper we discuss the combination of simulated satellite gravitational curvatures, that is, components of the third-order gravitational tensor, by merging these solutions using the spectral combination method. For this purpose, integral estimators of biased- and unbiased-types are derived. In numerical studies, we investigate the performance of the developed mathematical models for the gravitational field modelling in the area of Central Europe based on simulated satellite measurements. First, we verify the correctness of the integral estimators for the spectral downward continuation by a closed-loop test. Estimated errors of the combined solution are about eight orders smaller than those from the individual solutions. Second, we perform a numerical experiment by considering the Gaussian noise with the standard deviation of 6.5 × 10−17 m−1 s−2 in the input data at the satellite altitude of 250 km above the mean Earth sphere. This value of standard deviation is equivalent to a signal-to-noise ratio of 10. Superior results with respect to the global geopotential model TIM-r5 (Brockmann et al. 2014) are obtained by the spectral downward continuation of the vertical–vertical–vertical component with the standard deviation of 2.104 m2 s−2, but the root mean square error is the largest and reaches 9.734 m2 s−2. Using the spectral combination of all gravitational curvatures the root mean square error is more than 400 times smaller but the standard deviation reaches 17.234 m2 s−2. The combination of more components decreases the root mean square error of the corresponding solutions while the standard deviations of the combined solutions do not improve as compared to the solution from the vertical–vertical–vertical component. The presented method represents a weight mean in the spectral domain that minimizes the root mean square error of the combined solutions and improves standard deviation of the solution based only on the least accurate components. A composite of powders of semi-Heusler ferromagnetic shape memory and pure titanium was successfully prepared by spark plasma sintering at the temperature of 950 °C. Sintering resulted in the formation of small precipitates and intermetallic phases at the heterogeneous interfaces. Various complementary experimental methods were used to fully characterize the microstructure. Imaging methods including transmission and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed a position and chemical composition of individual intermetallic phases and precipitates. The crystalline structure of the phases was examined by a joint refinement of X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns. It was found that Co38Ni33Al29 decomposes into the B2-(Co,Ni)Al matrix and A1-(Co,Ni,Al) particles during sintering, while Al, Co and Ni diffuse into Ti forming an eutectic two phase structure with C9-Ti2(Co,Ni) precipitates. Complicated interface intermetallic structure containing C9-Ti2(Co,Ni), B2-(Co,Ni)Ti and L21-(Co,Ni)(Al,Ti) was completely revealed. In addition, C9-Ti2(Co,Ni) and A1-(Co,Ni,Al) precipitates were investigated by an advanced method of small angle neutron scattering. This study proves that powder metallurgy followed by spark plasma sintering is an appropriate technique to prepare bulk composites from very dissimilar materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Urban floras are composed of species of different origin, both native and alien, and with various traits and niches. It is likely that these species will respond to the ongoing climate change in different ways, resulting in future species compositions with no analogues in current European cities. Our goal was to estimate potential shifts in plant species composition in European cities under different scenarios of climate change for the 21st century. Location: Europe. Methods: Potential changes in the distribution of 375 species currently growing in 60 large cities in Southern, Central and Western Europe were modelled using generalized linear models and four climate change projections for two future periods (2041-2060 and 2061-2080). These projections were based on two global climate models (CCSM4 and MIROC-ESM) and two Representative Concentration Pathways (2.6 and 8.5). Results: Results were similar across all climate projections, suggesting that the composition of urban plant communities will change considerably due to future climate change. However, even under the most severe climate change scenario, native and alien species will respond to climate change similarly. Many currently established species will decline and others, especially annuals currently restricted to Southern Europe, will spread to northern cities. In contrast, perennial herbs, woody plants and most species with temperate continental and oceanic distribution ranges will make up a smaller proportion of future European urban plant communities in comparison with the present communities. Main conclusions: The projected 21st century climate change will lead to considerable changes in the species composition of urban floras. The microstructure, phase composition, and microhardness of both gas-atomized and mechanically milled powders of the Al7075 + 1 wt % Zr alloy were investigated. The gas-atomized powder exhibited a cellular microstructure (grain size of a few µm) with layers of intermetallic phases along the cell boundaries. Mechanical milling (400 revolutions per minute (RPM)/8 h) resulted in a grain size reduction to the nanocrystalline range (20 to 100 nm) along with the dissolution of the intermetallic phases. Milling led to an increase in the powder's microhardness from 97 to 343 HV. Compacts prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) exhibited negligible porosity. The grain size of the originally gas-atomized material was retained, but the continuous layers of intermetallic phases were replaced by individual particles. Recrystallization led to a grain size increase to 365 nm in the SPS compact prepared from the originally milled powder. Small precipitates of the Al3Zr phase were observed in the SPS compacts, and they are believed to be responsible for the retainment of the sub-microcrystalline microstructure during SPS. A more intensive precipitation in this SPS compact can be attributed to a faster diffusion due to a high density of dislocations and grain boundaries in the milled powder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent applications in Earth sciences require geoid models to be determined with a sub-centimetre internal error. Regional models of the geoid are usually determined using discrete gravity values measured at and/or outside the Earth, and global models of the Earth gravity field and topographic surface. In this article, we review previous studies that (to some extent) discuss the estimation of the geoid internal error, and provide formulations and methodologies required for a comprehensive formal propagation of errors of gravity data and global models through a mathematical model used for regional geoid determination. The mathematical model is based on combining the inverse Poisson integral equation and the Hotine integral transform in the Helmert harmonic space; also called the one-step integration method. Calculations and tests are performed in one of the most challenging test areas ("the Colorado test area") using ground and airborne gravity observations, a global digital terrain model (DTM) for topographic effects on gravity and the geoid, and a global Earth gravitational model (EGM) for the long-wavelength components of gravity and the geoid. There are three main contributors to the total internal error of the geoid height, namely those associated with the EGM (for estimating the long-wavelength geoid height), DTM heights (for evaluation of the topographic effects on observed gravity and the geoid height), and gravity observations (for determining the short-wavelength components of the geoid height). The geoid errors stemming from the EGM formal variances of its spherical harmonic coefficients amount to 0.3 cm of the total internal error budget of the geoid. The mean value of the standard deviation of the geoid height stemming from the topographic effects (due to uncertainties of DTM heights) is 1.0 cm. The observation errors and spatial distribution (resolution) of regional ground and airborne gravity observations, i.e., the design of the project, are the dominant contributors to the internal error of the geoid height. The internal error estimate of the geoid model in the Colorado test area computed on a 1′ × 1′ grid is 2.7 cm which agrees with the differences between various geoid models that contributed to the Colorado 1-cm geoid experiment. Determining a regional geoid model with a sub-centimetre internal error in areas of rough topography, such as that of Colorado, requires high-accuracy and high-resolution gravity observations. To assess the accuracy of regional gravity measurements required for sub-centimetre geoid models, we simulate airborne gravity measurements in the Colorado test area at a practical lower flight altitude, and improve the spatial distribution of existing ground gravity observations by filling in gaps using synthetic (EGM-based) gravity disturbances. Results show that carrying out airborne gravity surveys with a gentle drape approach at an average flight altitude between 300 and 500 m above the Earth's surface provides airborne gravity measurements with a mean standard deviation of 0.75 mGal at 2.2 km spatial resolution. Thus, a sub-centimetre regional gravimetric geoid model in the Colorado test area would be achievable using the proposed configuration of the ground and airborne gravity observations and more accurate DTMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We apply a novel method for the separation of potential field sources and their 3D inversion at the regional study area of Thuringian Basin in central Germany. The gravity and magnetic data are separated into long, medium and short wavelengths and then inverted separately. The main goal is to study uniqueness of the solution and its stability in all numerical steps of the interpretation process and to demonstrate, how geological constraints can diminish the degree of non-uniqueness by the interpretation of the gravity and magnetic anomalies. Our numerical experiments with medium wavelengths reveal that if we explain negative anomalies with the topography of near-surface layers, the obtained solution is not supported by borehole data. These negative anomalies are thus explained by restricted bodies (granitic intrusions) at the depths from 4 down to 10 km. These bodies are located above a density interface with topography at the depth of approximately 10 km. The 3D inversion of magnetic data (at short wavelengths) allows investigating a detailed structure of the upper boundary of the crystalline basement: two uplifts in the depths between 2.0 and 0.7 km are found. By using the residual negative anomalies we further study the salt tectonics, showing that the geometry of a salt pillow with a thickness of approximately 200 m closely agrees with borehole data. Super duplex stainless steel SAF2507 is characterized by good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, the combination of high strength and corrosion resistance requires the balanced ratio of austenite and ferrite in microstructure. At the same time, the presence of other secondary phases such as intermetallic phases (σ, χ), carbides (M 7 C 3 , M 23 C 6) and nitrides (π, CrN, Cr 2 N) is strongly undesirable. Additive manufacturing of duplex stainless steel has not been described in detail yet and the existing studies deal with the duplex stainless steels deposited by powder bed methods primarily. This study investigates the properties of steel SAF2507 prepared by the directed energy deposition (DED) method in the as-built state and after post-manufacturing solution annealing at 1100 °C for 60 min followed by water quenching and compares them with the duplex stainless steel additively manufactured by powder methods and conventional ways of preparation. Microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of both materials were studied in detail. The material after DED contains of about 28 wt% austenite, which is much more compared to additively manufactured duplex stainless steels by powder bed. The as-built state contained allotriomorphic grain boundary austenite (GBA), Widmanstätten austenite (WA) and intragranular austenite (IGA). Coarsening of austenite occurred during solution annealing, while ferrite's grains size decreased. The solution annealed material achieves approximately the desired ratio of austenite-ferrite 50:50. Yield strength decreased slightly during solution annealing from 680 MPa to 540 MPa, whereas elongation and notch toughness increase. The ductile to brittle transition temperature (about −100 °C) did not change significantly during solution annealing. • The as-built state of the DED contains significantly higher amount of austenite compared to powder bed methods. • Near balanced ferrite/austenite microstructure was achieved after post-manufacturing solution annealing. • Austenite grain size increases while ferrite grain size decreases during solution annealing. • Similar mechanical properties regardless of the orientation to the building direction. • Notch toughness increases during solution annealing. Flooding is a natural phenomenon that occurs with varying intensity and at irregular time intervals. Floods are the natural disasters that pose the greatest direct threat to the Czech Republic. They may cause serious critical situations during which not only extensive material damages are incurred, but so too is the loss of human life in affected areas as well as vast devastation of the cultural landscape including environmental damages. The information issued by flood forecasting services about the character and size of flood areas for individual N-year flood discharge events and specific flood scenarios is important for eliminating the potential threats and consequences of such events. Hydrodynamic models provide an adequate image of depths and flow velocities at the longitudinal or cross profiles of the watercourse during a flood event. This is why information obtained from hydrodynamic models occupies a privileged position from the viewpoint of protecting human life and mitigating property damage. Altimetry data are the basic input into hydrodynamic models. One way to obtain such data is through the method of aerial laser scanning (ALS) from the digital terrain model (DTM). This method is considered one of the most accurate methods for obtaining altimetry data. Its major drawback is however its inability to record terrain geometry under water surfaces due to the fact that the laser beam is absorbed by the body of water. The absence of geometric data on watercourse cross sectional area may perceptibly affect results of modelling, especially if the capacity of a missing part of the channel represents a significant cross sectional area. One of the methods for eliminating this deficiency is sufficiently calculating channel depth by means of software tools such as CroSolver. This paper deals with the construction of a hydrodynamic model using fifth generation DTM data and compares outputs from this model at various discharges with a model based on the altimetry data modified using CroSolver. Outputs from the two hydrodynamic models are compared using HEC-RAS software with the use of depth estimate data and with the use of the unmodified DTM. The comparison is done on two watercourse reaches with different terrain morphology and watercourse size. A complementary output is the comparison of inundation areas issuing from both model variants. Our results indicate that differences in the outputs are significant, namely at lower discharges (Q1, Q5), whereas at Q50 and Q100 the difference is negligible with a great role played by the morphology of the modelled area and by the watercourse size. Regional recovery of the disturbing gravitational potential in the area of Central Europe from satellite gravitational gradients data is discussed in this contribution. The disturbing gravitational potential is obtained by inverting surface integral formulas which transform the disturbing gravitational potential onto disturbing gravitational gradients in the spherical local north-oriented frame. Two numerical approaches that solve the inverse problem are considered. In the first approach, the integral formulas are rigorously decomposed into two parts, that is, the effects of the gradient data within near and distant zones. While the effect of the near zone data is sought as an inverse problem, the effect of the distant zone data is synthesized from the global gravitational model GGM05S using spectral weights given by truncation error coefficients up to the degree 150. In the second approach, a reference gravitational field up to the degree 180 is applied to reduce and smooth measured gravitational gradients. In both cases we recovered the disturbing gravitational potential from each of the four well-measured gravitational gradients of the GOCE satellite separately as well as from their combination. Obtained results are compared with the EGM2008, DIR-r2, TIM-r2 and SPW-r2 global gravitational models. Third-order gradients of the gravitational potential (gravitational curvatures) have already found some applications in geosciences. Observability of these parameters, describing the Earth's gravitational field in a more complex way than any other currently available gravitational parameter, such as gravitational acceleration (first-order gradient) or gravitational (second-order) gradient, is currently discussed by physicists. Moreover, first designs of observational devices (sensors) have already been proposed. The spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis are the common tools used by geoscientists to study spectral properties of various functionals of the Earth's gravitational potential. However, the conventional spherical harmonic expansions of the gravitational curvatures in the local north-oriented reference frame have rather complicated forms that depend on the first-, second- and third-order derivatives of the associated Legendre functions. Moreover, some of these expansions also contain singular terms at the poles. In this paper, the conventional series are transformed to new simpler and non-singular forms based on relations between the associated Legendre functions and their derivatives. The global gravity and crustal models are used in this study to determine the regional Moho model. For this purpose, we solve the Vening Meinesz-Moritz's (VMM) inverse problem of isostasy defined in terms of the isostatic gravity gradient. The functional relation between the Moho depth and the second-order radial derivative of the VMM isostatic potential is formulated by means of the (linearized) Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. Methods for a spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis of the gravity field and crustal structure models are applied to evaluate the gravity gradient corrections and the respective corrected gravity gradient, taking into consideration major known density structures within the Earth's crust (while mantle heterogeneities are disregarded). The resulting gravity gradient is compensated isostatically based on applying the VMM scheme. The VMM inverse problem for finding the Moho depths is solved iteratively. The regularization is applied to stabilize the ill-posed solution. The global geopotential model GOCO-03s, the global topographic/bathymetric model DTM2006.0 and the global crustal model CRUST1.0 are used to generate the VMM isostatic gravity gradient with a spectral resolution complete to a spherical harmonic degree of 250. The VMM inverse scheme is used to determine the regional isostatic crustal thickness beneath the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas (compiled on a 1x1 arc-deg grid). The differences between the isostatic and seismic Moho models are modeled and subsequently corrected for by applying the non-isostatic correction. Our results show that the regional gravity gradient inversion can model realistically the relative Moho geometry, while the solution contains a systematic bias. We explain this bias by more localized information on the Earth's inner structure in the gravity gradient field compared to the potential or gravity fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to prove the hypothesis that the growth and health of calves are dependent on feed supplements with an antidiarrhoeic effect, in relation to sex, season of birth, and number of the dam's lactations. A total of 186 calves were included in the experiment. After birth the calves were divided into three treatment groups: Ascophyllum nodosum (brown seaweed hydrolyzate, prebiotics), Lactobacillus sporogenes (probiotics), and the control group. All calves were weighed within two h after birth. The growth and health were investigated from the birth to the fourth week of age. Compared to the control, a significant effect of applied feed supplements was found in the Lactobacillus sporogenes group in the body weight at 28 days of life (P < 0.01) and in the average daily gains (P < 0.001). Differences between sexes were found in the body weight at birth (P < 0.001) and in the body weight at 28 days of life (P < 0.01). The effect of the season of birth was recorded in the average daily gains (P < 0.01). The effect of the number of the dam's lactations on calf was proved in body weights at birth and 28 days of life (P < 0.01). The interaction between treatment and sex (P < 0.05), and between treatment and season of birth (P < 0.01) were calculated in the average daily gains. We concluded from the analysis that only the use of Lactobacillus sporogenes had a positive influence on increasing the growth. In geodesy, the geoid and the quasigeoid are used as a reference surface for heights. Despite some similarities between these two concepts, the differences between the geoid and the quasigeoid (i.e. the geoid-to-quasigeoid correction) have to be taken into consideration in some specific applications which require a high accuracy. Over the world's oceans and marginal seas, the quasigeoid and the geoid are identical. Over the continents, however, the geoid-to-quasigeoid correction could reach up to several metres especially in the mountainous, polar and geologically complex regions. Various methods have been developed and applied to compute this correction regionally in the spatial domain using detailed gravity, terrain and crustal density data. These methods utilize the gravimetric forward modelling of the topographic density structure and the direct/inverse solutions to the boundary-value problems in physical geodesy. In this article, we provide a brief summary of existing theoretical and numerical studies on the geoid-to-quasigeoid correction. We then compare these methods with the newly developed procedure and discuss some numerical and practical aspects of computing this correction. In global applications, the geoid-to-quasigeoid correction can conveniently be computed in the spectral domain. For this purpose, we derive and present also the spectral expressions for computing this correction based on applying methods for a spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis of global gravity, terrain and crustal structure models. We argue that the newly developed procedure for the regional gravity-to-potential conversion, applied for computing the geoid-to-quasigeoid correction in the spatial domain, is numerically more stable than the existing inverse models which utilize the gravity downward continuation. Moreover, compared to existing spectral expressions, our definition in the spectral domain takes not only the terrain geometry but also the mass density heterogeneities within the whole Earth into consideration. Downward continuation of the potential data (gravity or magnetic) helps to interpret contributing sources by transforming the physical signal to their neighborhood. This paper applies three continuation approaches (Landweber's iteration, the direct method and the inverse-matrix approach with Tikhonov's regularization), based on the Poisson integral equation, and four integration schemes to the second vertical derivative of the anomalous potential $$T_{\rm zz}$$ obtained from GOCE data. In the experiments, $$T_{\rm zz}$$ was downward continued for 250 km in the area of Central Europe with special attention to edge effects. For the integration schemes, which use prior information outside the region of interest to reduce edge effects, the best agreement with TIM-r4 was achieved by the inverse-matrix approach with Tikhonov's regularization (RMS = 1.15 eotvos). The global crustal model CRUST1.0 (refined using additional global datasets of the solid topography, polar ice sheets and geoid) is used in this study to estimate the average densities of major crustal structures. We further use this refined model to compile the gravity field quantities generated by the Earth's crustal structures and to investigate their spatial and spectral characteristics and their correlation with the crustal geometry in context of the gravimetric Moho determination. The analysis shows that the average crustal density is 2,830 kg/m, while it decreases to 2,490 kg/m when including the seawater. The average density of the oceanic crust (without the seawater) is 2,860 kg/m, and the average continental crustal density (including the continental shelves) is 2,790 kg/m. The correlation analysis reveals that the gravity field corrected for major known anomalous crustal density structures has a maximum (absolute) correlation with the Moho geometry. The Moho signature in these gravity data is seen mainly at the long-to-medium wavelengths. At higher frequencies, the Moho signature is weakening due to a noise in gravity data, which is mainly attributed to crustal model uncertainties. The Moho determination thus requires a combination of gravity and seismic data. In global studies, gravimetric methods can help improving seismic results, because (1) large parts of the world are not yet sufficiently covered by seismic surveys and (2) global gravity models have a relatively high accuracy and resolution. In regional and local studies, the gravimetric Moho determination requires either a detailed crustal density model or seismic data (for a combined gravity and seismic data inversion). We also demonstrate that the Earth's long-wavelength gravity spectrum comprises not only the gravitational signal of deep mantle heterogeneities (including the core-mantle boundary zone), but also shallow crustal structures. Consequently, the application of spectral filtering in the gravimetric Moho determination will remove not only the gravitational signal of (unknown) mantle heterogeneities, but also the Moho signature at the long-wavelength gravity spectrum. The basis for each cattle farming are healthy and strong individuals. The aim of this study was to determine which of the given feed supplements have the greatest effect on live weight gain of calves in the early period after weaning from mother to infant milk substitutes. The research was conducted from July 2014 to December 2014. After the birth calves were weaned into individual boxes in the barn, where during the first 21 days of life their feeding ration was enriched with feed supplements. On the basis of the added supplement calves were divided into three experimental groups and one control group. First weighing of calves was done after birth and the second after 30 days. From the results of observations it can be concluded that feed supplements are accepted positively by calves in the first days of life and have a positive beneficial effect on weight gain and general health of calves.
