Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress contribute to the pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis (UC). Inula viscosa is a plant with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We investigated the effect of an ethanolic extract of I. viscosa on an experimental UC model created using acetic acid. Rats were divided into four groups of eight: group 1, control; group 2, 3% acetic acid group; group 3, 100 mg/kg sulfasalazine + 3% acetic acid group; group 4, 400 mg/kg I. viscosa + 3% acetic acid. I. viscosa and sulfasalazine were administered by oral gavage and 3% acetic acid was administered per rectum. We found that I. viscosa treatment decreased colon malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1 beta and nuclear factor kappa B levels; it increased reduced glutathione, nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2, heme oxygenase-1 and kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 levels and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity. Group 1 colon exhibited normal histological structure. Slight inflammatory cell infiltration and edema and insignificant slight erosion in crypts were detected in colon tissues of group 4. We found that I. viscosa reduced oxidative stress and inflammation, which was protective against UC by inducing the Nrf-2/Keap-1/HO-1 pathway in the colon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The protective effects of the ethanol extract of Smilax excelsa L. (SE) leaves were investigated on testicular tissue of rats with a torsion model in this study. The chemical composition of the extract was detected by means of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). SE extract was given for 21 days before torsion was created in the treatment group. The sperm parameters of the torsion group were impaired, and there was an increase in MDA level as well as a decrease in GSH level and GPx activity compared to the control group. TNF‐α and NF‐κB levels in the torsion group increased as compared to those in the control group. The expression levels of Nrf‐2 and HO‐1 were lower in the torsion group than those in the control group. The SE pretreatment group has improved sperm, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers when compared to the torsion group, and the Nrf‐2/HO‐1 pathway was activated. Practical applications: Smilax excelsa L. is a plant with economic value used in traditional medicine in the treatment of stomachache, bloating, and breast cancer in Northwest Anatolia. It has an antioxidant effect due to the flavonoids and anthocyanins it contains. The protective effect against ischemia–reperfusion‐induced tissue and reproductive damage in testicular tissue were demonstrated with the study. When the histological examinations of the tissues were evaluated, it was found that morphological structure of the tissues was retained in the treatment group. The findings indicate that SE prevents tissue damage in the torsion model by antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects and activating Nrf‐2/HO‐1 pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of perineural dexamethasone against intraneural bupivacaine. Rats were divided into 9 groups with 6 animals in each group; Group 1 (Intraneural saline 600 µL–2ndday), Group 2 (Intraneural saline 600 µL–7th day), Group 3 (Intraneural saline 600 µL + perineural dexamethasone 0.5 mg/kg-2nd day), Group 4 (Intraneural saline 600 µL + perineural dexamethasone 0.5 mg/kg-7th day), Group 5 (Intraneural bupivacaine 10 mg/kg–2nd day), Group 6 (Intranueral bupivacaine 10 mg/kg–7th day), Group 7 (Intraneural bupivacaine 10 mg/kg + perineurald exam ethasone 0.5 mg/kg-2nd day), Group 8 (Intraneural bupivacaine 10 mg/kg + perineural dexamethasone 0.5 mg/kg-7th day), Group 9 (Control group). At the end of the application period, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations were analyzed. It was observed that caspase 3 levels significantly increased in the 5th and 6th groups compared to the 1st and 2nd groups (p < 0.01). However, in the 7th and 8th groups, these levels were similar with 1st and 2nd groups. While a significant decrease in S 100 levels was detected in group 6 (p < 0.05), a significant increase occurred in Group 8 and reached the same levels as Group 2. According to histopathological evaluation, edema, vacuolization and myelin degeneration were significantly increased in groups 5 and 6 (p < 0.05). However, in the 8th group, the mentioned data showed a significant decrease and reached the same levels as group 2. As a result, perineural dexamethasone was found to have protective effects against intraneural bupivacaine induced sciatic nerve damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biometrical knowledge in both illness and health is important for correct diagnosis and treatment. There is little information on the biometric and disorders of sea turtles. In this study, we evaluated the use of orbital ultrasonographic examination in sea turtles (Caretta caretta and Chelenoidas mydas). We used 10-12 MHz probes to examine clinically healthy eyes in the 10 Caretta caretta and 10 Chelenoidas mydas through ocular ultrasonography. Polar axis, equatorial axis, corneal thickness, anterior chamber, lens thickness and vitreous chamber were all determined. Statistical differences in the sea turtle were noted in the corneal thickness (P<0.01). Statistical difference was not found between Caretta caretta, Chelenoidas mydas and right or left eyes in the measurements of polar diameter, equatorial diameter, corneal thickness, anterior camera, lens thickness, vitreous space. Nictitans gland prolapse (NGP), also known as third eyelid gland prolapse or cherry eye disease, is an important eye problem that should be treated as soon as possible in dogs. Although many surgical methods have been described, there is no consensus on the most effective technique. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the characteristics of cases and clinical outcomes of Morgan's pocket technique in the treatment of dogs with NGP. In this context, the characteristics of the cases were examined in 25 dogs diagnosed (29 eyes) with NGP. Clinical results, recurrence, and complications were evaluated in 17 dogs (20 eyes) who underwent surgical treatment with Morgan's pocket technique. The most common breeds were Terrier (28%) with 7 cases and Cane corso (20%) with 5 cases. Most of the patients were male (56%) by sex and less than 1 year (66%) by age. The disease was diagnosed in the acute stage in 9 cases (36%) and in the chronic stage of 16 cases (64%). The success rate of 17 patients (20 eyes) without recurrence was 94.12% (16 cases). The recurrence rate was 5.88% and the complication rate was 5.88%. In conclusion, it is advantageous to use Morgan's pocket technique in NGP cases in dogs because of its easy applicability and high success rate. In this case report, specific antivenin treatment for Viperidae snake envenomation in two cattle was defined for the first time. The diagnosis of snake envenomation was made according to the history and clinical findings. Clinical examination revealed systemic (tachycardia, dyspnea, cyanosis, hypersalivation, ruminal hypotony) and local (swelling of the leg and head) findings depending on the location of snake bites. Laboratory analysis determined granulocytic leukocytosis, monocytosis, decreased iron binding capacity, and increased CK and LDH enzyme activities. In the specific treatment of cases, equine-derived polyvalent antivenin containing antitoxic immunoglobulins against Viperidae species was administered. Additionally, 5% dextrose, antibiotics, dexamethasone, antihistamines, diuretics, and a vitamin B complex were applied. All clinical and laboratory abnormalities improved after treatment. Complete clinical improvement was observed within 1 week in both cases. The results indicate that equine-derived specific antivenin treatment in snake bites of the family Viperidae can be successfully used in cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to determine the concentrations of the most investigated environmentally relevant heavy metals in two highly endangered sea turtle species ( Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas ) from the important nesting area on the Northeast Mediterranean Sea. The highest mean concentration was of Fe, while Hg and Pb were lowest. All tissue concentrations of Al, As, Fe and Mn were significantly different between the species. In particular, As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn concentrations were lower in Caretta caretta and Cd, Hg, Mn, Zn concentrations were lower in Chelonia mydas than those reported in other parts of the world. Conjunctivitis is frequently seen in red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans). If the diseases are untreated, it can cause starvation and death. This study was performed on eleven red-eared sliders with conjunctivitis. Clinical findings were closed eyes, chemosis and unilaterally or bilaterally tear secretion, loss of sight and anorexia. Conjuctival swap samples were taken for bacterial examination. Aeromonas hydrophyla and Pseudomonas spp. were detected in microbiological analysis. In treatment were performed bath with enrofloxacine solutions (5 mg/L), 3% boric acid solution and oral Vitamin A (5.000 IU/L). In all cases, full recovery was seen following the treatment. This is the first report about enrofloxacin bath for using conjuctivitis in red-eared sliders. As a result; bath with enrofloxacin solutions may be a suitable alternative treatment for red-eared sliders with conjunctivitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surgical outcome and mortality of diaphragmatic hernia in cats and present herniorrhaphy results. Diagnostic and surgical data from 25 cats with diaphragmatic hernias were analyzed retrospectively. The cats were between the ages of 2 months and 4 years, included 9 cases of males (5/9 neutered) and 16 cases of females (9/16 spayed). Acute cases were 12/25 and chronic cases were 13/25. Diaphragmatic rupture locations were defined according to the points that are determined based on a clockwise scale. Location was classified as multiple in 10 (40 %), ventral in 7 (28 %), right in 5 (20 %), and left in 3 (12 %) cases. The three most frequently herniated organs were small intestine (20, 80 %), liver (16, 64 %), and omentum (15, 60 %). Postoperative survival rates were 83.3 % for acute cases and 69.2 % for chronic. Full recovery was achieved in 19 (76 %) of the cats. Results suggest that the location and size of diaphragm ruptures, the organs herniated, and the presence of concurrent pathologies directly affect mortality. Mortality is higher in cases with concurrent injuries, large diaphragmatic ruptures, and excessively herniated organs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
