This study developed a scale to enable high school students to self-assess their digital competencies, which are essential in the information society. The scale was constructed by referring to the European Commission's DigComp framework and DigCompSAT, and by focusing on the missing concepts and elements in Japan's Joho-Katsuyo-Noryoku (information literacy). A study of 732 high school students was conducted using the scale. The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a good fit for a bifactor model consisting of group factors corresponding to the five areas of DigComp, which confirmed the construct validity. The model was also maintained in the 20-item scale, which was condensed from the initial 82 items. The model showed an acceptable level of internal consistency by omega, and group discrimination validity was confirmed by using IC3 as an external criterion. Therefore, we concluded that the high school student version of the digital competency self-assessment scale is generally valid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted to clarify the competency structure of kokoyakyu (Japanese high-school baseball) managers required by players. First, we interviewed 30 kokoyakyu OB players, and identified 127 competency items. To categorize these items, 1 professor and 3 graduate students in sports pedagogy discussed them until a consensus was reached. This yielded 62 competency items that were divided into 13 categories. Second, to appraise the reliability and validity of the resulting structure, we collected questionnaires from 800 kokoyakyu players. Corrected item-total correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis revealed 4 factors comprising 22 competency items: (1) Reasonable coaching (8 items), (2) Mental and physical care consciousness (5 items), (3) Personalized coaching (5 items), and (4) Transcendental consciousness (4 items). The model data fit indices were c² /df = 2.264, GFI = .903, CFI = .940, RMSEA = .056. Construct validation was assessed by convergent validity (Cronbach’s alpha, extracted mean variance, and construct reliability), discriminative validity, and player profile. According to the player’s profile, “Reasonable coaching”, “Personalized coaching” and “Transcendental consciousness” were significantly higher in high-ranking schools than in low-ranking schools, and “Mental and physical care consciousness” was significantly higher in nonregular players than in regular players. Therefore, we judged that this structure is an appropriate indicator of the competency of kokoyakyu managers required by players. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the present eating behaviors of high school students and the factors affecting them. We conducted a questionnaire survey for 751 high school students who belonged to two public high schools in Saitama prefecture. More than 80% of students always or often ate breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. About 85% students consumed foods with good nutritional balance. Findings of multiple regression analysis indicated that the values of food, cooking skills, time use, and the level of school significantly influenced eating behaviors, whereas knowledge about food was not. These results suggest that it is effective to give guidance enhancing the values of food and focusing on the time use in order to improve eating behaviors of high school students. Furthermore, it is necessary to devise the ways to teach based on the school levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of home economics is to increase students’ quality of life (QOL) and well-being throughout life. This study discusses the elements of “life literacy” and the knowledge and skills acquired in high-school home economics as a way to examine qualities and abilities fostered by home economics. The qualities and abilities of home economics and the reality of student-life were then surveyed with the aim of contributing to future home economics lessons. The following became clear after analyzing 2,207 students’ responses to a questionnaire survey. 1) High-school students with high life literacy are in good health and have a higher QOL compared to high-school students with low life literacy. Moreover, they have a strong intention to become independent alongside a strong desire for male–female partnership in building a family where both spouses work. 2) Students with a high acquisition of knowledge and skills in home economics have a higher life literacy than those with a low acquisition. These findings clarify that life literacy is related to both QOL and the knowledge and skills acquired in home economics. It is the ability to solve problems in life using the knowledge and skills acquired in home economics to improve the QOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
For the present research, a study was conducted with rapidly growing late adolescent high school athletes with the aim of understanding basic data such as pre- and post- exercise physical measurements, body metabolism, and examining the effects of fatty acid intake on exercise performance. The participants (n=24; male=11, female=13) in the study were first- and second-year high school students who belong to their school's basketball club. Data collection in the study consisted of the participant's physical measurements and blood test, and their Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) before and after exercise. The exercise intensity was calculated using the Metabolic Equivalents (METs) of daily club activities. The participants completed a dietary intake survey using Brief-type self-administered Diet History Questionnaire for 15-years-olds (BDHQ15y). The participants also completed a physical measurements and blood test, and a Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) before and after exercise. We investigated the effect of a 2-week regiment of food containing medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and long-chain triglycerides (LCT). Results of the study showed significantly higher values Creatine Kinase (CK) after the 2-week period. Participants also showed no significant difference between males and females students before and after. No severe adverse effects were observed. In conclusion, this study suggests that MCT intake up to 6 g/day is safe for high school students. Further study will be needed to show it's effectiveness in reducing muscle fatigue. - Abstract
This study contributes to the literature on the relation between situational help-seeking styles and school adjustment. The aim of this study was to develop measures of how high school students seek help from peers or teachers and to investigate how these autonomous and dependent differences influence school adjustments. A questionnaire on helpseeking styles and school adjustment was completed by 453 high school students (227 males, 221 females, and 5 who did not reveal their gender) aged 15 to 18 years. Factor analysis showed that each help-seeking scale had two factors. The reliability was established by a Cronbachʼs alpha (α=.65~.91), and the construct validity and content validity were established at a given level. An analysis of variance indicated that an autonomous help-seeking style was positively associated with various situations such as academics, career, etc., while a dependent help-seeking style in social relationship situations was positively associated with school adjustment. These results indicate that a dependent help-seeking style has a negative effect in academic domains but may have a positive effect in social relationship domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
LINE is a mobile application used mainly for communication with friends. Recently, LINE has become indispensable, particularly for young people. This study explored high school students' cognition about communication through LINE and revealed the effect of their friendships on it. High school students (N=423) completed a LINE scale that was constructed for this study and a Friendship scale in an online survey. Exploratory factor analysis yielded the following six factors: (1) “anxiety about being ignored,” (2) “ease,” (3) “sense of miscommunication,” (4) “increase in aggressiveness,” (5) “obsession with quick reply,” and (6) “sense of being close.” Subsequently, a multiple population analysis suggested that a psychological tendency to avoid being disliked by friends is one of the reasons for high school students' ambivalence about communication through LINE. - Abstract
Dental and maxillofacial injuries often occur in ice hockey(IH)because of violent contact between players and/or equipment. The use of a facemask and mouthguard(MG)is mandatory or recommended under the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Especially, mouthguard use is mandatory for all players aged under 20. However, the use of protective gear by Japanese IH players is unknown since there have been only a few surveys and analyses relating to MG. The aim of this study was to investigate the recent situation of MG usage among professional and high school IH players in Japan. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 20 professional(23-35 yrs;mean 27.95 yrs)and 29 high school(mean 15.90 yrs)male IH players. Questions included possession of MG, its type(stock, boil & bite, custom-made), period of use and complaints. Data were statistically compared with Fisherʼs exact probability test at p<0.01. Eleven(55%)professional and 26(90%)high school players possessed a MG(p<0.01). Five(33%) professional and 13(45%)high school players used their MGs for both matches and practice. Four(20%) professional and 20(69%)high school players complained about their MGs. The degree of MG satisfaction was significantly higher among professionals than high school players(p<0.01). The results indicated that dental professionals should encourage professional IH players to wear their mouthguard. In addition, it is important to educate IH players to wear their mouthguard during not only matches but also training sessions. Future studies are needed to examine causes and countermeasures for complaints about the use of MGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
