Due to the superior properties of physical hydrogels especially those that originated from biodegradable polymers, carboxymethyl xanthan (CMX) was prepared, and physically gelled with zinc ions. The chemical structures of CMX and its hydrogels were verified by FTIR and
1 H NMR. The porous structure of hydrogels was verified using scanning electron microscopy, while the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed the presence of Zn in hydrogels. The effect of Zn ions on the crystalline structure was studied using wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated enhanced thermal stability upon increasing the Zn ions content. Cytotoxicity assays confirmed the non-toxicity of hydrogels against the MCF-7 breast cells. The microbial inhibition of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was significantly improved by increasing the content of Zn2+ in hydrogels. The extracted data confirmed the competency of the prepared hydrogels in drug delivery fields due to their non-toxicity, antibacterial activity and enhanced physical properties.
