Guidelines encouraging social distancing, limited outings, and remote work due to COVID-19 have increased sedentary periods and reduced levels of physical activity. These habits increase the risk of metabolic diseases, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus. The World Health Organization recommends muscle-strengthening exercises as well as regular physical activity to promote overall health. This study investigates the effect of a wearable hip exoskeleton on muscle activity and heart rate during anaerobic exercise in 40 healthy adults (mean age of 40.00 ± 11.51 years; n = 20 females). Bot Fit, a wearable hip-type robotic exoskeleton, was developed by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Suwon, Republic of Korea) to enhance the effects of both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. All study participants performed a fitness exercise protocol, including knee-ups, good mornings, squats, mountain climbs, kick-backs, reverse lunges, and split jacks, with and without a Bot Fit. To evaluate the effect of anaerobic exercise with the Bot Fit, muscle activity and heart rate were measured during fitness exercises with and without a Bot Fit. Measured muscles were the rectus abdominis (RA), erector spinae (ES), rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius medialis (GCM), and gluteus maximus (GM). During anaerobic exercises with the Bot Fit, there was a significant increase in muscle activity compared to exercising without the Bot Fit. Muscle activity increased significantly in the RA, RF, VL, BF and TA muscles during knee-ups; in the ES, BF, and GM during good mornings; in the RF, VL, VM, BF, and GM during squats; in RA, RF, VL, VM, and GM during mountain climbs; in the RA and BF during kick-backs; in the RF, BF, and GCM during reverse lunges; and in the RF and VL during split jacks (p < 0.05). Heart rates showed a statistically significant increase during good mornings, mountain climbs, and reverse lunge exercises while wearing the Bot Fit (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that anaerobic exercises by healthy adults using a Bot Fit led to enhanced activation of abdominal and lower-limb muscles as well as an improved heart rate, maximizing the effect of anaerobic exercise compared with the same exercise protocol without a Bot Fit. As the use of cross-sectional abdominal and pelvic imaging has increased exponentially in the past several decades, incidental musculoskeletal findings have become commonplace. These are often unrelated to the indication for the examination and are frequently referred to as the "radiologist's blind spot" on these studies. The differential diagnosis for abnormalities of the paraspinal and pelvic musculature is, in many cases, quite different from the anterior abdominal wall muscles. Furthermore, due to their relatively deep location, pathology involving the former muscle groups is more likely to be clinically occult, often presenting only incidentally when the patient undergoes cross-sectional imaging. Effective treatment of diseases of these muscles is dependent on adherence to a diverse set of diagnostic and treatment algorithms. Background: Core musculature is important for efficiency during activities including running. Both abdominal muscle strength and endurance contribute to this efficiency. The purpose of this study is to determine what differences and relationships exist in abdominal muscle thickness, strength, and endurance among persons who are runners, active, and inactive. Hypothesis: Persons in the running group would show significantly greater abdominal muscle thickness, muscle strength, and muscle endurance compared with those in the nonrunning groups. Study Design: Quantitative cohort design. Level of Evidence: Level 2b. Methods: A total of 78 subjects aged 18 to 27 years were divided into 3 groups: runners, active, and inactive. Assessment included abdominal muscle thickness via diagnostic ultrasound (Mindray North America), strength using a static Isotrack dynamometer (JTech Medical), and abdominal muscle endurance using a side plank. Statistical analysis using analysis of variance, t tests, and Pearson's correlation coefficients and partial correlations was performed using SPSS Version 26 with a significance level of P < 0.05. Results: Significantly greater muscle thickness of internal obliques (IOs) at rest and during contraction was found in the running group compared with the active group, the active group compared with the inactive group, and the running group compared with the inactive group. There were no statistically significant differences in overall strength measured by dynamometry among the 3 groups. Plank time was significantly greater for the running group compared with the other 2 groups. Male participants were greater in all areas: strength, plank time as a measure of muscle endurance, and muscle thickness. Body mass index was significantly correlated with resting thickness, muscle endurance, and muscle strength. Conclusion: Persons who run, are active, and are inactive use their abdominal muscles differently. Runners have thicker IOs and better abdominal muscle endurance than the other 2 groups. Focusing on endurance training of the obliques may be beneficial for persons who run. This study aimed to investigate the effects of lumbar stabilization on muscle activity, muscle onset time, and scapular kinematics in individuals with scapular dyskinesis. Fourteen participants with scapular dyskinesis were recruited. Scapular muscle activity and activation onset time were measured by electromyography (EMG), and scapular upward rotation was measured by two-dimensional (2-D) Kinovia software, under two conditions: with and without abdominal bracing. There was a significant increase in the activity of the serratus anterior, middle trapezius, and inferior trapezius muscles between the conditions (p < 0.001, p = 0.045, and p < 0.001, respectively). During abdominal bracing, the activation onset time of the serratus anterior and lower trapezius was noticeably shorter (p = 0.041 and p = 0.011, respectively). Scapular upward rotation at 30°, 60°, 90°, and 120° of shoulder abduction was significantly greater (p = 0.027, p = 0.003, p = 0.003, and p = 0.030, respectively). Increased scapular muscle activation, early activation onset time, and increased scapular upward rotation were also noted. These changes have an impact on the scapulohumeral rhythm. Background: Core training is the foundation of physical exercise. The activation of the lateral abdominal wall (LAW) muscles in the core muscles, particularly the transversus abdominal (TrA) muscles, has a stabilizing effect on the chest and abdomen. Therefore, we need to focus on the training effect of the TrA. There are many ways to measure the LAW. Ultrasound can assess the effect of training in real time and intuitively. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the activation of the LAW in different types of core training using ultrasound, to determine the best movements that can activate the TrA and train the core muscles. Methods: 22 healthy subjects (male 10, female 12, age 22.82 ± 0.98, BMI 20.78 ± 2.27) were included. The subjects were given the following instructions to perform breathing exercises at different positions: calm breathing and deep breathing at 0° hip flexion and 0° knee flexion; calm breathing, deep breathing, abdominal crunches and ball crunches at 45° hip flexion and 90° knee flexion; and calm breathing, deep breathing, abdominal crunches and ball crunches at 90° hip flexion and 90° knee flexion. The muscle thicknesses of the bilateral transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), and LAW muscles were measured using ultrasonography at the end of expiration during the above movements. Results: (1) The action with the greatest contraction ratio of the TrA was deep exhalation, which was significantly greater than crunch and ball crunch; (2) During deep exhalation, the TrA had the greatest contraction ratio, significantly greater than the IO and EO. (3) The TrA was thinnest during deep exhalation at 90°, followed by 45° and 0°. Background: The effectiveness of the quadratus lumborum block (QLB) for postoperative pain management depends on the injection pathway used. There is limited research on the block area produced by intramuscular injection of local anesthesia in the quadratus lumborum muscle. This study aimed to determine the cutaneous sensory blockade area produced by an intramuscular quadratus lumborum block (QLBi) at the L2 level. Methods: Twenty patients aged 18–60 years with ASA grade I-II and a BMI of 18–30 kg/m2 who were scheduled for open inguinal hernia repair with mesh underwent ultrasound-guided QLBi injection of 20 ml of 0.5% ropivacaine. The cutaneous sensory blockade area was measured by applying a cold stimulus 1 h after the block and then measured every hour after surgery until the sensation returned to normal. The duration of a blockade is defined as the time it takes for all affected areas to fully regain normal sensation following a blockade. Pain scores (numeric rating scale, NRS) were recorded at 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h after surgery. Adverse reactions to QLBi were recorded 24 h after surgery. Results: All 20 patients had reduced or lost cold sensation areas. The greatest extent of cold sensation reduction occurred at T7 (10%), and the least amount of cold sensation reduction occurred at L3 (10%). The block level covered T8 (20%), T9 (30%), T10 (45%), T11 (90%), T12 (95%), L1 (100%), and L2 (15%). Eighteen patients experienced areas of sensory loss, with the highest range at T11 and the lowest at L2. The duration of the blockade was 8.9 ± 3.8 h, with a maximum of 24 h and a minimum of 5 h. One patient experienced quadriceps weakness after surgery. Conclusion: Quadratus lumborum block of intramuscular pathway can produce effective cutaneous sensory blockade, which can be used for postoperative analgesia of indirect inguinal hernia operation, and may also be beneficial to analgesia of other lower abdominal operations. Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is a complex systemic entity, characterized by the progressive and relapsing inflammatory involvement of any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Its clinical pattern may be categorized as penetrating, stricturing or non-penetrating non-stricturing. Methods: In this paper, we performed a database search (Pubmed, MEDLINE, Mendeley) using combinations of the queries "crohn", "stricture" and "elastography" up to 19 June 2024 to summarize current knowledge regarding the diagnostic utility of ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) elastography techniques in the evaluation of stricturing CD by means of an assessment of the transmural intestinal fibrosis. We decided to include papers published since 1 January 2017 for further evaluation (n = 24). Results: Despite growing collective and original data regarding numerous applications of mostly ultrasound elastography (quantification of fibrosis, distinguishing inflammatory from predominantly fibrotic strictures, assessment of treatment response, predicting disease progression) constantly emerging, to date, we are still lacking a uniformization in both cut-off values and principles of measurements, i.e., reference tissue in strain elastography (mesenteric fat, abdominal muscles, unaffected bowel segment), units, not to mention subtle differences in technical background of SWE techniques utilized by different vendors. All these factors imply that ultrasound elastography techniques are hardly translatable throughout different medical centers and practitioners, largely depending on the local experience. Conclusions: Nonetheless, the existing medical evidence is promising, especially in terms of possible longitudinal comparative studies (follow-up) of patients in the course of the disease, which seems to be of particular interest in children (lack of radiation, less invasive contrast media) and terminal ileal disease (easily accessible). Simple Summary: This study reports an unusual case of hermaphroditism in Japanese flounder captured from the Bohai Sea. In this study, the results showed that the heterozygosity of the intersex Japanese flounder was 0.632, with the synchronous maturation of the testis and ovary, and eggs and the sperm were capable of fertilization. The levels of reproduction-related hormones were intermediate; the activity of 21-hydroxylase was reduced by approximately 20.0%. Japanese flounder is usually gonochoristic, with gonads that are either testes or ovaries. Here, we report an unusual case of hermaphroditism in Japanese flounder captured from the Bohai Sea. In the intersex flounder, the membrane of the upper ovary was closely connected to the abdominal muscles and internal organs, and the eggs filled the entire abdomen. The lower ovary was small and closely connected to the testes. The testes contained few fully mature sperm. Both eggs and sperm were capable of fertilization. The levels of several reproduction-related hormones (17β-estradiol, 11-ketotestosterone, 17α, 20β-dihydroxyprogesterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and testosterone) in the intersex flounder were intermediate, between those in females and males. The results showed that the heterozygosity of the intersex flounder was 0.632, and there were 28 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the cyp21a gene. Compared with that of wild flounder, the activity of 21-hydroxylase was reduced by approximately 20.0%, and expressions of cyp19a, amh, and dmrt1 differed. Introduction: Hypopressive exercise (HE) can be viewed as a mind--body activity, characterized by the integration of breath control and stretching postures. Proponents of HE claim that this type of training can offer potential therapeutic or health benefits. To date, there is no existing comprehensive published overview on HE. This scoping review aims to map and summarize the current literature reporting data on HE and identify key knowledge gaps and future research directions. Methods: This review considered studies that report on the immediate, short-, or long-term practice of HE regardless of condition, sex, age, and/or level of practice or physical condition. Any context or setting was considered for inclusion. This review was performed in accordance with the methodological framework proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute and by Arksey and O'Malley. MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception up to July 2023. Literature was mapped following the Patterns-Advances-Gaps-Evidence for Practice Recommendations framework to identify patterns and inform practice. Results: In total, 87 studies were identified that reported on the following themes: (1) therapeutic application of a short- or long-term HE programs (n = 56); (2) physiologic and physical responsiveness to a short- or long-term HE programs (n = 22); (3) psychologic and behavioral response to a short-term HE program (n = 14); and (4) acute or immediate physiological responses (n = 21). Literature gaps included poor methodological design, incomplete reporting of intervention, lack of male participants, and exploration of muscle groups distinct from the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Discussion: There is a need for high-quality randomized controlled trials, adherence to reporting guidelines on exercise, and the use of active control groups to verify clinical significance, the dose response, and health applications of HE. Purpose: The objective of incisional hernia surgery is to achieve the restoration of abdominal wall anatomical and physiological functions. This study aims to investigate the impact of abdominal wall reconstruction on abdominal muscle alterations by measuring the preoperative and postoperative changes in abdominal wall muscles in patients undergoing incisional hernia repair. Methods: For patients undergoing open incisional hernia abdominal wall reconstruction, preoperative and postoperative abdominal CT scans were analyzed at a minimum of 3 months post-surgery. 3D Slicer software was utilized for measuring preoperative and postoperative changes in abdominal cavity volume, abdominal muscle volume, as well as muscle volume, cross-sectional area, and abdominal circumference at specific levels. The acquired data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software. Results: A total of 40 patients meeting the inclusion criteria underwent open incisional hernia repair surgery. Some of these patients required component separation technique (CST) due to the larger size of the hernia sac. The abdominal muscles surrounding the hernia ring were defined as the "damaged group," while the remaining abdominal muscles were defined as the "undamaged group." Measurements revealed a significant increase in the volume of rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles in the damaged group. Similarly, there was a corresponding increase in the volume of rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles in the undamaged group. Conclusions: After abdominal wall reconstruction in incisional hernia patients, not only is their anatomical structure restored, but the overall biomechanical integrity of the abdominal wall is also repaired. We present a sequence building block (SBB) that embeds magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) into another sequence on the Siemens VE platform without any custom hardware. This enables dynamic studies such as functional MRS (fMRS), dynamic shimming and frequency correction, and acquisition of navigator images for motion correction. The SBB supports nonlocalised spectroscopy (free induction decay), STimulated Echo Acquisition Mode single voxel spectroscopy, and 1D, 2D and 3D phase‐encoded chemical shift imaging. It can embed 1H or X‐nuclear MRS into a 1H sequence; and 1H‐MRS into an X‐nuclear sequence. We demonstrate integration into the vendor's gradient‐recalled echo sequence. We acquire test data in phantoms with three coils (31P/1H, 13C/1H and 2H/1H) and in two volunteers on a 7‐T Terra MRI scanner. Fifteen lines of code are required to insert the SBB into a sequence. Spectra and images are acquired successfully in all cases in phantoms, and in human abdomen and calf muscle. Phantom comparison of signal‐to‐noise ratio and linewidth showed that the SBB has negligible effects on image and spectral quality, except that it sometimes produces a nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) signal enhancement for multinuclear applications in line with conventional 1H NOE pulses. Our new SBB embeds MRS into a host imaging or spectroscopy sequence in 15 lines of code. It allows homonuclear and heteronuclear interleaving. The package is available through the standard C2P procedure. We hope this will lower the barrier for entry to studies applying dynamic fMRS and for online motion correction and B0‐shim updating. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of an eight-week bosu ball exercise (BBE) program on core strength endurance and balance performance in intellectually disabled (ID) adolescents. Twenty-nine participants (14 males and 15 females) between the ages of 11 and 14, who had been diagnosed with moderate and mild intellectual disabilities (ID) by the Provincial Guidance Research Center they were affiliated with, were included in the study. The participants underwent an eight-week program of BBE. The plank test, endurance of the right (R) and left (L) lateral flexors, endurance of abdominal muscles, and endurance of back extensor muscles were assessed to determine core region endurance before and after BBE. Additionally, balance performance was evaluated using the Y balance test. The right (R) and left (L) leg Y balance test performances of the participants before and after BBE did not change significantly according to the group*time interaction (p>0.05). In the time interaction, L-Anterior (L-An) [F(1, 27)=4.273, η2p=.137,p=.048], L-Postmedial (L-PM) [F(1, 27)=15.244, η2p=.361,p<.001], L-Postlateral (L-PL) [F(1,27)=10. 703, η2p=.284,p=.003], R-An [F(1, 27)=9.833, η2p=.267, p=. 004], R-PM [F(1, 27)=9.958, η2p=. 269,p=.004], R-PL [F(1, 27)=15.681, η2p=.367,p<.001] values increased significantly. When the core strength parameters of the participants were examined; extensor muscle endurance showed a significant change in favour of men in the group-time interaction [F(1, 27)=6.619, η2p=.197, p=.016]. In the time interaction, plank [F(1, 27)=16.204, η2p=.375, p<.001], R-lateral flexor muscles [F(1, 27)=14.140, η2p=.344,p<.001], L-lateral flexor muscles [F(1, 27)=12.379, η2p=.314,p=.002], abdominal muscle [F(1, 27)=8.418, η2p=.238,p=.007], extensor muscles [F(1, 27)=17.802, η2p=.397,p<.001] parameters in males and females. As a result, BBE could be considered a preferred exercise modality to reduce the risk of fall-related injuries caused by balance impairment and inadequate trunk strength, which are prevalent among individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Inguinal hernias are the most common type of enterocele and are frequently caused by defects in the abdominal wall muscles in the groin area. Numerous animal models and human studies have shown that the gut microbiota is associated with skeletal muscle aging and loss. However, the causation between the gut microbiota and inguinal hernia remains unclear. To reveal the causal association between the gut microbiota and inguinal hernia, we conducted a two-sample double-sided Mendelian randomization analysis. We used genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) summary statistics of the gut microbiota from the MiBioGen consortium and GWAS statistics of inguinal hernia from the FinnGen R10 database. The causation between the gut microbiota and inguinal hernia was explored through the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, MR Egger regression method, weighted median method, weighted model method, and simple model method. Sensitivity analysis was used to test whether the Mendelian randomization analysis results were reliable. Reverse Mendelian randomization was used to conduct effect analysis and sensitivity analysis using the entire gut microbiota as the outcome. The IVW results indicated that Verrucomicrobia, Lactobacilliales, Clostridiaceae1, Butyricococcus, Categorybacter, Hungatella, Odoribacter, and Olsenella had a direct negative causation with the gut microbiota. The reverse Mendelian Randomization results showed that Eubacterium brachygroup, Eubacterium eligensgroup, Eubacterium xylanophilumgroup, Coprococcus3, Ruminococcus1, and Senegalimassilia were directly related to inguinal hernia. The bilateral sensitivity analysis revealed no heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy. The results confirmed that 8 bacterial traits had a negative causation with inguinal hernia. Reverse MR analysis revealed a positive correlation between inguinal hernia and 6 bacterial traits. Modulating the diversity and components of the gut microbiota is envisaged to contribute to improving the incidence and prognosis of inguinal hernia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objectives] Surgical sutures can provide sufficient tensile strength to hold the edges of a surgical incision together to promote healing. However, suture-induced foreign body reactions can exacerbate tissue inflammation depressing tissue healing. This study aimed to investigate variations in suture intensity and tissue inflammation after suturing the feline abdominal wall with different gauges of suture. [Methods] Feline abdominal skin and muscle were sutured using USP 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 PGA sutures, and tissue suture intensity was assessed through uniaxial tensile testing in vitro. USP 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 PGA sutures were implanted into feline abdominal muscles. After implantation, tissues were sampled at 1, 14 and 90 d. The expression levels of inflammatory factors were quantified using RT-qPCR and ELISA. The degree of inflammatory infiltration was evaluated in tissue sections. [Results]The results of skin and muscle suture intensity tests showed that the USP 5-0 PGA suture group experienced more suture breakage. Below 50% strain, there were no significant differences in stress among the groups (P>0.05) in vitro. At maximum tensile strength, there were no significant differences in strain, stress, and tensile strength among groups(P>0.05). At 1 and 14 d after suture implantation in vivo, the mRNA and protein expression levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α)decreased with decreasing suture diameter, and the inflammatory response of the tissues around the large-diameter suture was more severe (P<0.05). [Conclusions] USP 5-0 PGA suture is sufficient for matching the tensile strength requirements of general cat abdominal wall surgical incisions. Background: Abdominal wall injuries are commonly encountered in veterinary medicine and may lead to significant complications if not appropriately treated. Different types of grafts, including autologous, xenogeneic, biologic or non-biologic and composite grafts, are widely used to ensure adequate tissue repair and prevent recurrence in cases of hernia. However, identifying the most suitable graft for each case is particularly challenging. Methods: In the present study, a commercial graft derived from bovine small intestinal submucosa (bSIS) was compared with the polypropylene mesh (PPM) in terms of their repair efficacy and tissue compatibility. These grafts were used to repair artificially induced abdominal wall defects in 24 rats categorised into two groups. The morphologic and histologic analyses were used to compare and assess the grafts. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of patient demographic and anatomical characteristics on abdominal compliance (AC), which represents the slope of the pressure–volume (P–V) curve of the abdominal cavity and is a measure of the ease of abdominal dilatation. The study included 90 patients undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgery. Subcutaneous adipose tissue and abdominal muscle thickness were measured using ultrasonography. The mean AC was calculated during insufflation using the formula (ΔV/ΔP). The relationship between demographic and anatomical variables and AC was investigated. The results demonstrated that AC was higher in men, the elderly, and women with a history of pregnancy, and lower in patients with a history of abdominal surgery. No significant correlation was found between AC and BMI, abdominal muscle thickness, and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. These findings suggest that morbid obesity, a common comorbidity in laparoscopic surgery, and well-developed abdominal muscles are not indicators of low AC. However, gender, age, pregnancy history, and previous abdominal surgery affect AC during laparoscopic surgery. Background: Low‐intensity continuous inspiratory muscle training improves its strength. The abdominal muscles are the main expiratory muscles, and their training may improve expiratory muscle strength. Respiratory muscle strength regulates coughing effectiveness, which is critical for pneumonia management. In older people, risk factors for the development of pneumonia were respiratory muscle weakness and swallowing impairment. Currently, the impact of high‐intensity intermittent inspiratory and abdominal muscle combined training on the respiratory, swallowing, and systemic muscles is unclear. Objective: We aimed to explore the effects of high‐intensity inspiratory muscle training combined with or without abdominal muscle training on respiratory muscle strength as well as the strength, mass, and performance of swallowing and systemic muscles. Methods: Twenty‐eight healthy adults were divided into two groups. Participants performed high‐intensity intermittent inspiratory muscle single or its combination with abdominal muscle training for 4 weeks. Respiratory muscle strength, swallowing muscle strength and mass, systemic muscle strength, mass and performance were measured at baseline, Week 2 and Week 4. Results: Both groups showed greater maximal respiratory pressures at Week 2 and Week 4 than baseline. Both groups showed improved tongue pressure and geniohyoid muscle thickness at Week 4. In addition, the combined training group improved body trunk muscle mass, handgrip strength and five‐time chair stand test, whereas the single training group did not. Conclusion: This study revealed that high‐intensity inspiratory muscle training improved inspiratory muscle strength and swallowing muscle strength and mass. Moreover, inspiratory and abdominal muscle combined training showed an additional benefit of improving systemic muscle strength, mass and performance. The closure of the urethra under the condition of stress is the result of a reflex contraction of the urethral rhabdosphincter and pelvic floor muscles. This is likely induced by activity of the abdominal muscles due to a sudden increase in abdominal pressure. This reflex contraction with an increase of urethral pressure occurs a few milliseconds before an increase in intraabdominal pressure. The urethral pressure increase during stress is only possible with fixation of the urethra by the pubourethral ligaments (PUL), facilitating urethral kinking. Objectives: To identify typical patterns of abdominal wall muscle activation in patients with diastasis recti and inguinal hernias compared to controls during the Valsalva maneuver, voluntary coughing, and physical activity. Methods: The study included 15 subjects: 5 with diastasis recti, 4 with inguinal hernias, and 6 healthy controls. The functions of rectus abdominis (RA) and external oblique (OE) muscles were measured by surface electromyography (sEMG). Using ultrasound, the thicknesses of the RA, OE, internal oblique (IO), and transversus abdominis (TA) muscles were assessed as well as the echo intensity (EI) of RA and OE. Results: We found a significant effect of the type of abdominal wall pathology on the maximum sEMG amplitude (p = 0.005). There was a reliable trend in maximum sEMG amplitude, with the highest one in diastasis recti and a significantly lower one in inguinal hernias. Duncan's test showed a significant difference in muscle thickness, both on the right and left sides, between patients with diastasis and controls, but only on the left side between patients with diastasis and those with inguinal hernia (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The abdominal wall pathology results in a change in the function and structure of the abdominal muscles, which can be detected using electromyography and ultrasound examination. Background: Behavioral therapy has proved effective as rumination therapy. Our objective was to treat rumination patients using multidisciplinary behavioral therapy aimed at reducing ≥2 of the rumination score. Methods: All patients fulfilled Rome IV criteria for rumination and were referred to speech therapy for psychoeducation, diaphragmatic breathing exercises and guided eating, physiotherapy for exercises to relax the thoracic and abdominal muscles, and consultation with the psychologist and the dietitian. Symptoms, depression, anxiety, health‐related quality of life (HRQoL), and functional capacity were evaluated by questionnaires (Rome IV, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), 15D, and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) 2.0) at baseline and at 6‐month control. Esophageal manometry was performed at 6‐month control. Key Results: The study enrolled 11 patients (19–64 years, 10 female). Rumination score: 6.5 (5–8) at baseline, 4.0 (3–5) at the 6‐month control, p = 0.005. The letter provides an update on the "modified-TEP (mTEP)" technique for managing large indirect inguinal hernias, aiming to reduce seroma formation and recurrence rates. The refined technique involves initial suture ligation of the hernia sac, followed by inversion and plication of the sac to the transversus abdominis muscle using absorbable tackers instead of non-absorbable sutures. Special attention is advised to avoid injuries to surrounding structures during the procedure. Background: Fascial breakdown with the occurrence of an incisional hernia (IH) is an important and challenging complication of any laparotomy. For a long time, the success of the abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) was measured only from the surgeon's perspective by defining outcome measures such as wound morbidity and recurrence. The understanding that complete recovery is difficult to assess without considering patients has shifted the paradigm of optimal outcomes to Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) and Quality of Life (QoL), which are pivotal to evaluate the success and efficacy of AWR. Methods: We conducted a prospective follow-up study of 91 patients undergoing mesh-augmented abdominal wall reconstruction for primary or recurrent incisional hernia between January 2021 and December 2023. Demographic data, comorbidities, and hernia characteristics were recorded. All patients were evaluated preoperatively by a native abdomino-pelvic CT scan to assess the characteristics of hernia (length, width, surface, and volume of the incisional hernia sac and of peritoneal cavity), the presence of mesh (if previously inserted), and abdominal wall muscles status. All intervention were performed by the same surgical team according to the techniques described by Rives – Stoppa (RS), Ramirez (ACS), and Novitsky (PCS). Abdominal wall function was assessed using trunk raising (TR) and double leg lowering (DLL) measurements performed preoperatively, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively. At the same time, pre- and post-operative quality of life was analysed using the EQ-5D score. Results: Mean age of 59.42 ± 12.28 years and a male/female ratio of 35/56 were recorded, most of them being obese. There were 36 (42%) patients with defects larger than 10 cm. The distribution of the type of surgical intervention was: RS 35 patients, ACS 13 patients, and PCS 43 patients. The mean value of combined score for the preoperative abdominal wall functionality was 4.41 ± 1.67 (2–8) while the mean value of preoperative EQ-5D index was 0.652 ± 0.026 (-0.32–1.00). QoL was poor and very poor for 48% (44) of the patients who recorded index values less than 0.56 (50% percentile). Preoperative EQ-5D index was highly correlated with Combined AWF score (r = 0.620; p < 0.0001) and the correlation was specific (AUC = 0.799; p < 0.0001; asymptotic 95%CI = 0.711–0.923). At 12 months, the AWF score increased to 8.13 ± 2.58 (1–10) and the QoL total score to 0.979 ± 0.007 (0.71–1). Good and very good total scores for QoL were recorded for 47 patients (84%) compared to 33 (36%) in the preoperative evaluation (χ2 with Yates continuity correction for two degrees of liberty = 46.04; p < 0.00001). Conclusion: Our results suggest that patients can expect to see a significant overall improvement in all five components of QoL measured with the help of Eq. 5D questionnaire. Background: A landing error scoring system (LESS) is widely used to evaluate landing maneuvers. Poor landing maneuvers, such as lateral bending of the trunk, are thought to be associated with a risk of lower-extremity injury. However, no studies have examined the association between landing and trunk muscle function, which is associated with a high risk of lower-extremity injury. Hypothesis/Purpose: This study examined whether an association exists between landing movements and a high risk of lower-extremity injury and trunk muscle function. It was hypothesized that athletes with poor activation of deep trunk muscle (transversus abdominis and internal oblique) would have lower LESS scores. Study Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: The trunk muscle thickness at rest and during the plank was measured using ultrasonography. The percent of change in muscle thickness (during plank/at rest) was calculated. The LESS was measured using the Physimax. Based on the LESS scores, patients were divided into high- (LESS > 6) and low-risk (5 > LESS) groups for lower extremity injury. The relationship between the high-risk group and trunk muscle thickness was examined using a stepwise regression analysis. Results: The high-risk group had significantly lower muscle thicknesses of the transversus abdominis (p=0.02) and transversus abdominis plus internal oblique abdominis (p=0.03) muscles during the plank. Additionally, the high-risk group showed significantly lower percent of change in muscle thickness of the internal oblique (p=0.02) and transversus abdominis plus internal oblique (p=0.01) muscles. Only the percentage of change in the thickness of the internal oblique and transverse abdominal muscles was extracted from the regression as a factor. Conclusion: The findings indicated that athletes with landing movements and a high risk of injury, as determined based on the LESS results, had low trunk muscle function, and a relationship was observed between the change in thickness of transversus abdominis and internal oblique abdominis muscles. Context: Inappropriate activation of the anterolateral abdominal muscles affects the stability of the lumbopelvic zone and increases the appearance of pain and lesion in the area. Therefore, ways to improve its effective contraction are crucial in rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to compare the activation of the transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles in 3 different pelvic positions (down pelvis [DP], horizontal pelvis [HP], and up pelvis [UP]) during sling bridge exercise (SBE) to determinate which position is more effective to promote a correct contraction of the anterolateral abdominal muscles. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Fifteen participants performed 3 variations (DP, HP, and UP) of a one-legged exercise called "supine pelvic lift" on a sling device. The thicknesses of the TrA, IO, and EO were recorded at rest and at the 3 positions using ultrasound imaging. Thickness, change ratio, lateral slide of TrA, and preferential and contraction activation ratio of TrA, IO, and EO were analyzed. Results: TrA and IO showed greater activation (P = .01) in the UP position than the other pelvic positions. In addition, UP position decreased the activation of the EO (P = .01). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, SBE in the UP position has the potential to improve normal contraction patterns of the musculature and can be used in future intervention of the lumbopelvic zone. Background: Myosteatosis, ectopic fat accumulation in skeletal muscle, is a crucial component of sarcopenia, linked to various cardiometabolic diseases. This study aimed to analyze the association between dyslipidemia and myosteatosis using abdominal computed tomography (CT) in a large population. Methods: This study included 11,823 patients not taking lipid-lowering medications with abdominal CT taken between 2012 and 2013. Total abdominal muscle area (TAMA), measured at the L3 level, was segmented into skeletal muscle area (SMA) and intramuscular adipose tissue. SMA was further classified into normal attenuation muscle area (NAMA: good quality muscle) and low attenuation muscle area (poor quality muscle). NAMA divided by TAMA (NAMA/TAMA) represents good quality muscle. Atherosclerotic dyslipidemia was defined as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) less than 40 mg/dL in men and 50 mg/dL in women, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) greater than 160 mg/dL, triglycerides (TG) greater than 150 mg/dL, small dense LDL-C (sdLDL-C) greater than 50.0 mg/dL, or apolipoprotein B/A1 (apoB/A1) greater than 0.08. Results: The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of dyslipidemia according to the HDL-C and sdLDL definitions were greater in both sexes in the lower quartiles (Q1~3) of NAMA/TAMA compared with Q4. As per other definitions, the ORs were significantly increased in only women for LDL-C and only men for TG and ApoB/A1. In men, all lipid parameters were significantly associated with NAMA/TAMA, while TG and ApoB/A1 did not show significant association in women. Conclusion: Myosteatosis measured in abdominal CT was significantly associated with a higher risk of dyslipidemia. Currently, the lack of physical activity can lead to health problems, with the increase in obesity in children between 8 and 18 years old being of particular interest because it is a formative stage. One of the aspects of trying to solve this problem is the need for a standardized, less subjective, and more efficient method of evaluating physical condition in these children compared to traditional approaches. Objective: Develop a multiplatform based on computer vision technology that allows the evaluation of the physical fitness of schoolchildren using smartphones. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on schoolchildren aged 8 to 18 years of both sexes. The sample was 228 schoolchildren (128 boys and 108 girls). Anthropometric measurements of weight, height, and waist circumference were evaluated. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Four physical tests were evaluated: flexibility (sit and reach), horizontal jump (explosive strength), biceps curl (right arm strength resistance), and sit-ups (abdominal muscle resistance). With the information collected traditionally and by filming the physical tests, a computer vision system was developed to evaluate physical fitness in schoolchildren. Results: The implemented system obtained an acceptable level of precision, reaching 94% precision in field evaluations and a percentage greater than 95% in laboratory evaluations for testing. The developed mobile application also obtained a high accuracy percentage, greater than 95% in two tests and close to 85% in the remaining two. Finally, the Systematic Software Quality Model was used to determine user satisfaction with the presented prototype. Regarding usability, a satisfaction level of 97% and a reliability level of 100% was obtained. Conclusion: Compared to traditional evaluation and computer vision, the proposal was satisfactorily validated. These results were obtained using the Expanded Systematic Software Quality Model, which reached an "advanced" quality level, satisfying functionality, usability, and reliability characteristics. This advance demonstrates that the integration of computer vision is feasible, highly effective in the educational context, and applicable in the evaluations of physical education classes. Purpose: Clarify the composition of the Posterior wall of the Inguinal Canal(PWIC), the location and composition of the Transverse Fascia(TF), and the tissue origin of the Cremaster(C) by observing the anatomy of the inguinal region of the cadaver. Methods: 30 cadavers were dissected to observe the alignment of the muscles and fascia of the inguinal canal and the anterior peritoneal space. the anatomical levels of the posterior wall of the inguinal canal and the alignment of the Spermatic Cord(SC) were observed. Results: (1) The posterior wall of the inguinal canal was white, bright, and tough tendon membrane-like tissue; (2) the transverse fascia was a thin fascial tissue with only one layer of membranous structure located in the abdominal wall under the abdominal wall on the side of the blood vessels of the peritoneal cavity; (3) the internal oblique muscle and its tendon membrane, and the transversus abdominis muscle and its tendon membrane extended on the surface of the spermatic cord, and fused and continued to the cremaster on the surface of the spermatic cord. Conclusions: 1. PWIC is mainly composed of Internal oblique muscle of abdomen (IOMA), Aponeurosis of internal oblique muscle of abdomen (AIOMA), Transverse abdominal muscle (TAM), and Transverse abdominal aponeurosis(TAA) as the following four types: (1) TAM and AIOMA fused to form a tendinous layer; (2) IOMA and TAM form the posterior wall of the muscle in the PWIC; (3) IOMA and AIOMA continue in the PWIC; 4) TAM and TAA continue in the PWIC. 2.TF is a thin fascial tissue with only one layer of membrane structure, TF is not involved in the composition of PWIC, so this fascia has nothing to do with resisting the occurrence of inguinal hernia. 3. The spermatic cord that travels in the inguinal canal is fixed to the lower wall of the inguinal canal by the tendon membrane of the cremaster, which is organized from the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles and their tendon membranes, The inguinal canal is a musculotendinous canal. Our understanding of the nervous tissues that affect the wing flapping of insects mainly focuses on the brain, but wing flapping is a rhythmic movement related to the central pattern generator in the ventral nerve cord. To verify whether the neural activity of the abdominal ganglion of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) affects the flapping‐wing flight, we profiled the response characteristics of indirect flight muscles to abdominal ganglion excitation. Strikingly, a change in the neural activity of ganglion 3 or ganglion 4 has a stronger effect on the electrophysiological activity of indirect flight muscles than that of ganglion 5. The electrophysiological activity of vertical indirect flight muscles is affected more by the change in neural activity of the abdominal ganglion than that of lateral indirect flight muscles. Moreover, the change in neural activity of the abdominal ganglion mainly causes the change in the muscular activity of indirect wing muscles, but the activity patterns change relatively little and there is little change in the complicated details. Endometriosis, affecting 6%–10% of women of reproductive age, can lead to severe symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Among its rarer manifestations is abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE), which has been increasingly reported following cesarean deliveries. This case discusses a 39‐year‐old woman who presented with a 13‐year history of cyclical pain at her cesarean section scar, exacerbated over the last year by the development of a painful abdominal mass. Medical evaluations indicated endometriosis at the scar, with further investigations including ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging showing involvement of the rectus abdominis muscle. Elevated tumor markers HE4 and CA‐125, along with a biopsy, confirmed adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent extensive surgical treatment, including the resection of the mass, hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo‐oophorectomy, and lymphadenectomy. Pathology confirmed moderately differentiated infiltrative adenocarcinoma originating from endometriosis. Despite the absence of postoperative chemotherapy, the patient showed no recurrence, emphasizing the effectiveness of comprehensive surgical management. This case highlights the critical importance of recognizing the potential for malignant transformation in AWE, particularly following cesarean deliveries, and underscores the necessity for vigilant monitoring and personalized treatment strategies. The management of AWE, especially when malignant transformation is suspected, necessitates a multidisciplinary approach similar to that used in ovarian cancer, focusing on rigorous surgical intervention and the potential for adjuvant therapies. Purpose: Patients with abdominal rectus diastasis (ARD) may have muscular functional impairments, but clinics lack appropriate objective assessment tools. The aim was to establish the relative and absolute reliability, and convergent validity, of muscular activity using Surface Electromyography (SEMG) during isometric abdominal muscle strength testing in patients with ARD and controls without ARD. Methods: Twenty-six patients with ARD were matched for age, sex and BMI with controls without ARD. Participants were tested twice during isometric muscular contractions using SEMG located on six abdominal sites. Mean amplitude, fatigue, and recruitment order were analyzed. Relative reliability was evaluated with Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC), while absolute reliability was estimated by calculating the Standard Error of Measurement and Minimal Detectable Change. Convergent validity was addressed in relation to participant characteristics, functional ability, and symptoms. Results: Mean SEMG amplitude for all abdominal wall muscle contractions showed moderate to excellent relative test–retest reliability, with ICC values ranging from 0.46 to 0.97. In contrast, fatigue and recruitment order displayed poor to moderate relative reliability in both groups. Absolute reliability measures were generally high. A moderate to high convergent validity (ARD: rho-value 0.41–0.70; Controls: rho-value 0.41–0.75) was observed for mean amplitude in relation to a functional sit-to-stand test, abdominal circumference, BMI, back pain, and quality-of-life. Conclusions: The results of applying SEMG during isometric abdominal muscle support practicing the method in clinics, although additional development is needed with further standardization and more functional testing. The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is one of the bone flaps commonly used for mandibular reconstruction. Observation of the skin paddle and Doppler ultrasound are methods that are usually used to monitor DCIA flaps after mandibular reconstruction surgery. The aim of this study was to introduce a novel DCIA flap with a perforator-supported external oblique abdominal muscle (EOAM) island for postoperative flap monitoring. This study included five patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction using this modified technique. The DCIA flap and the EOAM island supplied by the ascending branch of the DCIA were harvested during the surgery. After mandibular reconstruction, the EOAM island was placed in the submandibular region to monitor the blood supply to the DCIA flap after surgery. The blood supply to the DCIA flap was monitored by observing the colour, texture, and bleeding condition of the EOAM island. After the monitoring period, the EOAM was removed and the ascending branch of the DCIA was ligated. The outcome was successful in all patients. The EOAM island supported by the ascending branch of the DCIA is reliable and safe, thus providing a robust option to monitor the blood supply to the DCIA flap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed to observe the effect of bilateral transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block on the MACBAR of sevoflurane in gynecological patients with laparoscopic pneumoperitoneal stimulation. Patients and Methods: Fifty patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery were randomly assigned to either the control group (n= 25) or the TAP block group (n= 25). Patients in the TAP block group were subjected to a bilateral transversal abdominal muscle plane block with 0.33% ropivacaine (20 mL on each side) guided by ultrasound. The control group received an equal volume of normal saline. The MACBAR of sevoflurane in each group was determined using a sequential allocation technique. Results: The MACBAR of sevoflurane in the TAP block group was significantly lower than that in the control group (4.20% [95% confidence interval {CI}, 4.02%– 4.38%] vs 5.03% [95% CI, 4.89%– 5.18%]). Conclusion: Bilateral TAP block can reduce the MACBAR of sevoflurane in gynecological patients with pneumoperitoneum stimulation. Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR2100046517. Introduction: The objective of this study is to compare the thickness of the transverse abdominis, internal oblique, external oblique, rectus abdominis, and rectus abdominis distance, the quality of life (SF-36), the presence of chronic pelvic pain (CPPQ-Mohedo), and sexual dysfunction (IIEF) in men who practice CrossFit® versus men who do not. Design, setting, participants, and main outcome measures: Sixty-four healthy men with an average age of 37.19 were recruited at a private sports club and divided into two groups for this cross-sectional observational study. Additionally, participants completed the CPPQ-M, IIEF, and SF-36 questionnaires. Results: Significant differences were found in the thickness of the internal oblique at rest (p = 0.018, d = 0.61), which was greater in the CrossFit® group. In the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire (p = 0.05, d = 0.50), the CrossFit® group also obtained a higher score. Conclusion: CrossFit® improves the quality of life and self-esteem of the participants, in addition to increasing the thickness of the internal oblique. Activity-based Training (ABT) represents the current standard of neurological rehabilitation. Robotic Locomotor Training (RLT), an innovative technique, aims to enhance rehabilitation outcomes. This study aimed to conduct a randomized pilot and feasibility trial of a locomotor training program within South Africa. Individuals with chronic traumatic motor incomplete tetraplegia (n = 16). Each intervention involved 60-minute sessions, 3x per week, for 24-weeks. Outcomes included feasibility measures and functional capacity. 17 out of 110 individuals initiated the program (recruitment rate = 15.4%) and 16 completed the program (drop-out rate = 5.8%) and attended sessions (attendance rate = 93.9%). Both groups showed a significant increase in upper extremity motor score (MS) and abdominal strength post intervention. Only the RLT group showed a significant change in lower extremity MS, with a mean increase of 3.00 [0.00; 16.5] points over time. Distance walked in the Functional Ambulatory Inventory (SCI-FAI) increased significantly (p = 0.02) over time only for the RLT group. Feasibility rates of the intervention and functional outcomes justify a subsequent powered RCT comparing RLT to ABT as an effective rehabilitation tool for potentially improving functional strength and walking capacity in people with incomplete SCI. Spinal cord injury causes severe limitations to functional capacity, independence, and quality of life. Robotic Locomotor Training is growing rehabilitation modality for people with spinal cord injury, but currently its effects on functional capacity are limited. In a relatively small sample, this study shows that large, randomized control trials are feasible within a low-income setting. Information on the associations of testosterone levels with abdominal muscle volume and density in men is limited, while the role of estradiol and SHBG on these muscle characteristics are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between fasting serum sex hormones and CT-derived abdominal muscle area and radiodensity in adult men. Conducted as a cross sectional observational study using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, our analyses focused on a community-based sample of 907 men aged 45–84 years, with 878 men having complete data. CT scans of the abdomen were interrogated for muscle characteristics, and multivariable linear regressions were used to test the associations. After adjustment for relevant factors, higher levels of both total testosterone and estradiol were associated with higher abdominal muscle area (1.74, 0.1–3.4, and 1.84, 0.4–3.3, respectively). In the final analyses, levels of total testosterone showed a positive association, while an inverse relationship was observed for SHBG with abdominal muscle radiodensity (0.3, 0.0–0.6, and − 0.33, − 0.6 to − 0.1, respectively). Our results indicate a complex association between sex hormones and abdominal muscle characteristics in men. Specifically, total testosterone and estradiol were associated with abdominal muscle area, while only total testosterone was associated with muscle radiodensity and SHBG was inversely associated with muscle radiodensity. Purpose: Split abdominal wall muscle flap (SAWMF) is a technique to repair large defects in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). A possible objection to this intervention could be any associated abdominal muscle weakness. Our aim is to analyze the evolution of this abdominal muscle wall weakness. Methods: Retrospective review of CDH repair by SAWMF (internal oblique muscle and transverse) from 2004 to 2023 focusing on the evolution of muscle wall weakness. Results: Eighteen neonates of 148 CDH patients (12,1%) were repaired using SAWMF. Mean gestational age and birth weight were 35.7 ± 3.5 weeks and 2587 ± 816 g. Mean lung-to-head ratio was 1.49 ± 0.28 and 78% liver-up. Seven patients (38%) were prenatally treated by tracheal occlusion. Ninety-four percent of the flaps were used for primary repair and one to repair a recurrence. One patient (5.6%) experienced recurrence. Abdominal muscle wall weakness was present in the form of a bulge. Resolution of weakness at 1, 2 and 3 years was 67%, 89% and 94%, respectively. No patient required treatment for weakness or died. Conclusions: Abdominal muscular weakness after a split abdominal wall muscle flap repair is not a limitation for its realization since it is asymptomatic and presents a prompt spontaneous resolution. Background: In intensive care units (ICUs), around one-third of severely sick patients need mechanical ventilation (MV) to maintain their breathing; some require it for just hours, while others need it for months. The diaphragm, abdominal, and intercostal muscles--the three main breathing muscles--may experience atrophy due to lack of usage during this period. Objective: We aimed to determine the effect of transcutaneous electrical co-activation of diaphragm and abdominal muscles on weaning time in MV patients. Patients and Methods: A total of 52 mechanically ventilated patients of both sexes participated in the study with age range from 40 to 55 years old. They were recruited from ICU Department in New Cairo Generalized Hospital; referred by physicians. They were assigned randomly into 2 Groups. Group A consisted of 26 patients; received co-activation of both diaphragmatic electrical stimulation and abdominal functional stimulation in addition to conventional physical program for one session per day for 7 days a week till discharge, 60 minutes per session. Group B consisted of 26 patients; received conventional physical therapy program for 30 minutes per session for one session a day for 7 sessions a week till discharge. Outcome measure weaning time was assessed. Results: Both groups showed significant improvements in the weaning time. However, Group A demonstrated greater improvements compared to Group B. Conclusion: Application of transcutaneous diaphragmatic stimulation and abdominal functional electrical stimulation is safe way for critically ill patients for decreasing length of duration in ICU for mechanically ventilated patient thus improve weaning. Objective: To compare the thermographic pattern of regions of interest (ROI) of respiratory muscles in young asthmatics with and without bronchospasm induced by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea (EVH). Materials and Methods: Cross‐sectional study carried out with 55 young (55% male and 45% females) aged 12.5 ± 3.3 years, divided in nine nonasthmatics, 22 asthmatics without exercise‐induced bronchospasm compatible response (EIB‐cr) and 24 asthmatics with EIB‐cr. The diagnosis of EIB was given to subjects with a fall in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) ≥ 10% compared to baseline. Thermographic recordings of respiratory muscles were delimited in ROI of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), pectoral, and rectus abdominis intention area. Thermal captures and FEV1 were taken before and 5, 10, 15 and 30 min after EVH. Results: Twenty‐four (52.1%) of asthmatics had EIB‐cr. There was a decrease in temperature at 10 min after EVH test in the SCM, pectoral and rectus abdominis ROIs in all groups (both with p < 0.05). There was a decrease in temperature (% basal) in asthmatic with EIB‐cr compared to nonasthmatics in the rectus abdominis area (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There was a decrease in temperature in the ROIs of different muscle groups, especially in asthmatics. The greater drop in FEV1 observed in individuals with EIB‐cr was initially associated with a decrease in skin temperature, with a difference between the nonasthmatics in the abdominal muscle area. It is likely that this decrease in temperature occurred due to a temporary displacement of blood flow to the most used muscle groups, with a decrease in the region of the skin evaluated in the thermography. This study investigates gender differences in core muscle morphology among elite alpine skiers using ultrasonography, highlighting significant disparities that could influence training and injury prevention strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed, examining ultrasound imaging (USI) in 22 elite skiers (11 male, 11 female) to assess the thickness of the external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), transversus abdominis (TrAb), and rectus abdominis (RA) muscles. Results: Significant differences were noted, with male skiers displaying greater muscle thickness, particularly in the right IO and RA and left IO, EO, TrAb, and RA. Conclusions: These findings suggest that male and female skiers may require different training approaches to optimize performance and reduce injury risks. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the physical demands on elite skiers and underscores the need for gender-specific training regimens to enhance athletic outcomes and prevent injuries. Purpose: To clarify the association between forced expiration and the abdominal muscles by assessing the relationship between expiratory mouth pressure and abdominal muscle activity in healthy young males. Methods: Twenty-five males underwent forced expiration at 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100% of the maximal expiratory mouth pressure. Mouth pressure was measured using a bridge-type transducer connected to a mouth pressure meter. Abdominal crunch, twist crunch, and abdominal hollowing at maximal voluntary contraction were also performed. During forced expiration and abdominal exercises, the activity of the rectus abdominis (RA), oblique externus abdominis/oblique internus abdominis (OE/OI), and OI/transversus abdominis (OI/TrA) was measured using surface electromyography. Results: The determination coefficient (r2) for the linear relationship between mouth pressure and abdominal muscle activity was 0.86 ± 0.15 for the RA, 0.93 ± 0.06 for the OE/OI, and 0.90 ± 0.14 for the OE/OI. The slope of the linear relationship with r2 ≥ 0.50 showed no significant difference between the RA (0.22 ± 0.27) and the OE/OI (0.27 ± 0.21). However, it was significantly greater in the OI/TrA (1.78 ± 1.41) than in the RA and OE/OI. The OE/OI activity was significantly lower in the maximal forced expiration than in twist crunch, and the OI/TrA activity was not significantly greater in the maximal forced expiration than in twist crunch. Conclusion: All abdominal muscles contribute to forced expiration with a greater contribution of the OI and TrA than the RA and OE. Background: Mediumweight (40–60 g/m2) polypropylene (MWPP) mesh has been shown to be safe and effective in CDC class II–III retromuscular ventral hernia repairs (RMVHR). However, MWPP has the potential to fracture, and it is possible that heavyweight (> 75 g/m2) polypropylene mesh has similar outcomes in this context. However, there is limited data on HWPP mesh performance in clean-contaminated and contaminated scenarios. We aimed to compare HWPP to MWPP mesh in CDC class II–III wounds during open RMVHR. Methods: The Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative database was retrospectively queried for a cohort of patients who underwent open RMVHR with MWPP or HWPP mesh placed in CDC class II/III wounds from 2012 to 2023. Mesh types were compared using a 3:1 propensity score-matched analysis. Covariates for matching included CDC classification, BMI, diabetes, smoking within 1 year, hernia, and mesh width. Primary outcome of interest included wound complications. Secondary outcomes included reoperations and readmissions at 30 days. Results: A total of 1496 patients received MWPP or HWPP (1378 vs. 118, respectively) in contaminated RMVHR. After propensity score matching, 351 patients remained in the mediumweight and 117 in the heavyweight mesh group. There were no significant differences in surgical site infection (SSI) rates (13.4% vs. 14.5%, p = 0.877), including deep SSIs (0.3% vs. 0%, p = 1), surgical site occurrence rates (17.9% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.377), surgical site occurrence requiring procedural intervention (16% vs. 17.9%, p = 0.719), mesh removal (0.3% vs. 0%, p = 1), reoperations (4.6% vs. 2.6%, p = 0.428), or readmissions (12.3% vs. 9.4%, p = 0.504) at 30 days. Conclusion: HWPP mesh was not associated with increased wound morbidity, mesh excisions, reoperations, or readmissions in the early postoperative period compared with MWPP mesh in open RMVHR for CDC II/III cases. Background: The positive roles of deep muscle relaxation in abdominal surgeries and transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) in the postoperative analgesia. This study aimed to discuss the effects of TAPB on abdominal muscle relaxation, the intraoperative diaphragmatic, and the respiratory functions. Methods: The patients were randomly divided into the TAPB group who received single-shot TAPB bilaterally (n=30), and the control group who did not receive TAPB (n=30). Both groups keep the same steps for other procedures in the surgeries and anesthesia. Four time points for monitoring were defined: The moment when pneumoperitoneum pressure stabilized following endotracheal intubation and anesthetic induction (T0), appearance of the first incisure in the pressure-volume (P-V) loop (T1), appearance of the second incisure in the P-V loop (T2), and the moment with single stimulation (SS) =20% (T3). Primary observation parameters were SS1 measured by muscle relaxation monitoring at T1, and SS2 at T2. Secondary observation parameters included surgeon's satisfaction with surgical field and respiratory dynamics at the four time points. Results: The two groups were comparable in age, gender, BMI, ASA grade, and operation time. The TAPB group had a dramatic reduction in the total dose of intraoperative sufentanil (0.73± 0.21 ug/kg) compared with the control group (0.87± 0.18 ug/kg) (P=0.023); Other use of drug did not differ between the two groups. The two groups did not differ significantly in SS at either T1 (SS1) or T2 (SS2). In either group, surgeon's satisfaction with surgical field at T1 and T2 decreased dramatically compared with T0 and T3 (all P< 0.05). At each time point, the respiratory dynamics and the surgeon's satisfaction with surgical field did not differ significantly between the two groups. Conclusion: TAPB reduced the use of intraoperative analgesics without altering the degree of abdominal relaxation, or affecting surgeon's satisfaction with surgical field in the patients receiving laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Objectives: To compare activation ratios of the transverse abdominis (TrA) during an abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) and abdominal obliques during a golf swing, with and without ultrasound biofeedback, and to determine intrarater reliability of these ultrasound thickness measures. Design: Single-session crossover study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: Sixteen adult golfers with 2 or more episodes of low back pain (LBP) in the past year. Interventions: Verbal cueing alone and verbal cueing with ultrasound biofeedback. Main outcome measures: Bilateral TrA activation ratios were calculated during an ADIM with and without ultrasound biofeedback. Activation ratios of the abdominal obliques were calculated bilaterally during golf swings with and without ultrasound biofeedback. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated for average thickness across all muscles and conditions for the nonbiofeedback trials. Results: Transverse abdominis activation ratios were significantly higher when ultrasound biofeedback was provided bilaterally ( P < 0.001). Abdominal oblique activation ratios during the golf swing were also significantly higher with ultrasound biofeedback for the lead ( P = 0.014) and trail ( P < 0.001) sides. Intraclass correlation coefficient values ranged from 0.92 to 0.97 ( P < 0.001). Conclusions: Ultrasound biofeedback can increase activation ratios of the TrA during a supine ADIM in adult golfers with a history of LBP. Postswing ultrasound biofeedback increases activation of the abdominal obliques during a golf swing in golfers with a history of LBP. Pregnancy-related low back pain is a multifactorial problem and its assosiation with pain intensity and biopsycosocial factors can not be fully explained. This study aimed to determine the psychosocial as well as biological/physical risk factors associated with self-reported low back pain (LBP) intensity during different trimesters of pregnancy. This cross-sectional study comprised 107 pregnant women. An introductory information form for physical and medical characteristics, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for low back pain intensity and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for degree of loss of functionality, Short Form-36 (SF-36) for quality of life and Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) for physical activity were applied. Abdominal muscle thicknesses and diastasis recti were measured by ultrasonography. Univariate regression was used to analyse associations between each plausible independent variable and low back pain intensity. Mean LBP intensity during 1st, 2nd ve 3rd trimesters were 26.8 ± 20.9, 27.3 ± 19.8, 21.6 ± 20.1 mm, respectively. ODI scores were associated with LBP intensity, explaining 11%, 13% and 26% of LBP severity during the 1st, 2nd ve 3rd trimesters, respectively. Other biological/physical variables like age, body mass index, muscle thickness and diastasis recti were not associated with pain intensity. SF-36 emotional role limitation (coef = −0.03, R2 = 0.20, p = 0.01) in the 3rd trimester and SF-36 pain score in the 1st (coef = −0.04, R2 = 0.12, p = 0.02) and 3rd (coef = −0.05, R2 = 0.26, p = 0.004) trimesters and PPAQ-sedentary was associated during the 2nd trimester (coef = 0.17, R2 = 0.17, p = 0.02) with pain intensity. ODI scores were associated with LBP intensity in all three trimesters, with SF-36 pain domain in the 1st and 3rd trimesters, with SF-36 emotional role limitation only in the 3rd trimester and with sedentary activity level only in the 2nd trimester. Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) give feedforward postural control of the trunk, but they are delayed with ageing, affecting balance and mobility in older individuals. The reticulospinal tract contributes to postural control of the trunk; however, the extent to which age‐related changes affect the reticulospinal contributions to APAs of the trunk remains unknown in humans. Here, we tested the hypothesis that a startling acoustic sound, which activates the reticulospinal tract, improves delayed APAs in older individuals. Twenty‐two old (75 ± 6 years) and 20 healthy young adults (21 ± 4 years) performed a self‐initiated fast bilateral shoulder flexion or shoulder extension task in response to visual, visual and auditory (80 dB), or visual and startling (115 dB) cues. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from bilateral anterior deltoid (AD) and erector spinae (ES) during shoulder flexion and from bilateral posterior deltoid (PD) and rectus abdominis (RA) during shoulder extension. EMG onset of all muscles shortened during the startling cue in both age groups, suggesting a non‐specific modulation of the reticulospinal tract on prime movers (AD or PD) and non‐prime movers (ES or RA). Interestingly, APAs of the ES were accelerated in older participants to a similar degree as in younger participants during the startling cue. Conversely, APAs of the RA were not influenced by the startling cue in older participants. Our results suggest differential effects of ageing on functional contributions of the reticulospinal tract to APAs between back extensors and abdominal muscles. Background: The pyramidalis muscle, often considered a minor muscle of the anterior abdominal wall, has variable presence and morphology across populations. Its clinical significance, particularly in surgical interventions involving the suprapubic region, necessitates a detailed understanding of its anatomical features. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the incidence, morphometric variations (length, width, and thickness), and clinical relevance of the pyramidalis muscle in the cadaveric population, offering insights that could enhance surgical outcomes in the suprapubic region. Materials and Methods: It conducted on 60 formalin-fixed cadavers from the Department of Anatomy at Guntur Medical College, Guntur, and Government Medical College, Ongole. This study utilized digital Vernier calipers and measuring tape for precise morphometric analysis. Parameters such as presence, number of bellies, length, width, thickness, and the Pyramidalis Pubo Umbilical Index were meticulously recorded. Results: The pyramidalis muscle was present in 83.3% of the cases, with 80% bilateral and 3.3% unilateral occurrences. The mean length was 66.2 mm on the right and 64.4 mm on the left. The width at the base averaged 23.4 mm (right) and 22.5 mm (left), with a consistent mean thickness of 4.1 mm on both sides. The Pyramidalis Pubo Umbilical Index was 39.82 (right) and 39.2 (left), indicating little variation between sides. Conclusion: The pyramidalis muscle exhibits a high incidence rate and specific morphometric characteristics in the cadaveric population.
