Analysis of hair collected from putrefied or skeletal bodies is always complex and must take into account several pitfalls, such as external contamination and contamination by biological fluids. This work presents a case of particular complexity. A skeletonized body was discovered on a country road. A tuft of brown hair, detached from the scalp, irregular in length, non‐oriented, in contact with soil and vegetation, was removed. An anthropological examination was carried out and genetic samples were taken from the right femoral shaft. After about 10 washes with warm water and dichloromethane, the tuft of hair was analyzed without segmentation. General unknown screening was performed by liquid chromatography system coupled to a high‐resolution mass spectrometry (LC‐HRMS) after incubation in pH 9.5 borate buffer and liquid–liquid extraction. Specific Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) methods for date rape drugs were carried out by liquid chromatography system coupled to a tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS). The anthropological examination allowed to determine that the victim was a female individual, over 60 years old, the death dating from 3 months to 1 year. Comparison of the DNA results with the Missing Persons Index led to the identification, a 60‐year‐old woman who disappeared 5 months earlier. Hair analysis showed the presence of oxazepam (361 pg/mg), nordiazepam (54 pg/mg), and alimemazine (5 pg/mg). The interpretation of these concentrations is extremely difficult due to the risk of degradation of the hair cuticle during prolonged stay in the soil, as well as of contamination by putrefactive fluids. Purpose: The determinism of the sex is of most importance for reconstruction of the biological profile of deceased individuals. In this study, we aim to implement a technique to improve the accessibility of sex determination by the study of the bony labyrinth on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and computed tomography (CT) scans. Methods: CBCT and CT scans of temporal bones performed between 2014 and 2022 were collected with demographic information. The width of the lateral (LSCw), posterior (PSCw), and anterior semicircular canal (ASCw) was measured. The primary outcome was the diagnostic performance of the individual linear measures and the product of these measures. This analysis is supplemented by establishing thresholds using ROC curves. Inter-judge and intra-judge reliability evaluation was performed blinded in randomly selected exams. Results: One hundred forty-one petrous bones were included for analysis of their imaging. The analysis of the PSCw, ASCw, and ASCw*PSCw for sex determination was associated with area under curves of 0.88 ± 0.11, 0.82 ± 0.14, and 0.84 ± 0.10 respectively and accuracies of 0.74 ± 0.13, 0.78 ± 0.11, and 0.79 ± 0.13 respectively. In ROC-curve analysis, a PSCw*ASCw product > 48.5 allows to determine a male sex with > 95% specificity and a sensitivity of 50.1%. A PSCw*ASCw product ≤ 43 allows to determine a female sex with 88% specificity and 64% sensitivity. Reproducibility analyses showed good to excellent intra-judge and inter-judge reproducibility for ASCw and PSCw. Conclusion: Linear measurement of the semicircular canals of the vestibule on CBCT or CT could provide easy-to-use sex determination of the majority of females and males with a good predictive value. The distal epiphysis of the femur is classically reported as a marker of fetal maturity and is thus identified in a bioarcheological context as an indicator that an individual died at or around the time of birth; it thus provides crucial information in the creation of the biological profile and associated burial practices. The aim of the present study was to re‐evaluate this use by investigating an extant sample to assess (i) the age‐related frequencies of both distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyses and (ii) the influence of factors such as sex, vitality, and morbidity on the maturation of both epiphyses. The study was conducted on medical CT scans acquired in utero and ex utero between 2008 and 2017 in the hospital of Marseille (France). The final sample included 248 individuals aged between 26 and 42 completed gestational weeks (GW). Based on the results obtained in this study, 11% of the individuals from the sample aged between 26 and 33 completed GW had already developed a distal femoral epiphysis, whereas individuals aged between 38 and 42 GW had already developed both femoral and tibial epiphyses. According to these observations and current obstetrical practice, this maturation indicator cannot therefore be considered a precise estimator of whether a fetus is at term or not in an archeological context. Similarly, no delayed ossification was found among individuals who did not survive to 42 GW, or among those with severe developmental abnormalities, which does not support the hypothesis that delayed epiphysis maturation of the distal femur may be a morbidity marker for this age group in past populations. Background Introduction of 1 Treponema pallidum complex pathogen in naive European populations following the return of Christopher Columbus' troops from Central America in 1493 is a central dogma in venereology. Methods Among skeletal elements from the seventh or eighth century uncovered in Roquevaire, France, individual RS-1003 femur macroscopically suspected of having an infectious disease was investigated by means of paleoautoimmunohistochemistry, direct metagenomics, and paleoserology, along with 1 control femur from an apparently healthy individual (R-1003) and experimental negative controls. Results RS-1003 femur showed infectious bone; paleoautoimmunohistochemistry of the lesions led to microscopic detection of a T. pallidum complex pathogen. Phylogenetic analyses comprising 71 T. pallidum complex–specific reads covering 2.37% of the T. pallidum subsp. pallidum reference genome sequence revealed an ancestral T. pallidum complex pathogen in the lesion. Paleoserology detecting T. pallidum –specific antigens confirmed positive serological findings in individual RS-1003. Individual R-1003 and the negative controls remained negative. Conclusions This case, predating by 8 centuries previous detections of T. pallidum complex treponematosis in Europe, indicated that European populations were not naive to these pathogens before the 1493 introduction of a Central American T. pallidum complex pathogen overwhelming the T. pallidum ones previously circulating in the Old World. The distinction between falls and blows is a common and difficult task in forensic sciences. One of the most often used criteria to address this issue is the hat brim line (HBL) rule, which states that fall-related injuries do not lie above the HBL. Some studies, however, have found that the use of HBL rule is not so relevant. This study assesses the aetiologies, the number of fractures, and their location on the skull and the trunk in a sample of 400 individuals aged 20–49 years, which were CT scanned after traumas. This may facilitate the interpretation of such injuries in skeletonized or heavily decomposed bodies in which soft tissues are no longer available. Our aim is to improve the distinction rate between falls and blows by combining several criteria and assessing their predictability. Skeletal lesions were analysed using retrospective CT scans. Cases selected comprise 235 falls and 165 blows. We registered the presence and the number of fractures in 14 skeletal anatomical regions related to the two different aetiologies. We showed that the HBL rule should be used with caution, but there is nevertheless a possibility of discussing the aetiology of blunt fractures. Simple Summary: In forensic anthropology, skeletal trauma analysis can assist pathologists in determining the circumstance, cause, and manner of death. Determining whether the trauma is related to falls or induced by homicidal blows is often asked in relevance to legal issues. The hat brim line rule (HBL) is one of the most commonly used methods. The rule says that fractures resulting from blows may be found above and within the HBL, not on the skull's base. Recent studies have found that the HBL rule must be used carefully, and postcranial skeletal trauma could be useful in this distinction. Evidence presented in court must follow Daubert's guidelines for validity and reliability (evidence validated; error rates known; standards available; findings should be peer-reviewed and accepted by the scientific community). In this study, we assessed skeletal fracture patterns resulting from both etiologies. We tested various models for the method; the best one was based on the binary coding of 12 anatomical regions or 28 bones with or without baseline (age and sex). The results show the possible identification of the etiology in 83% of the cases. This method could be helpful for forensic experts in the interpretation of bone fractures. In this study, we propose a classification method between falls and blows using random forests. In total, 400 anonymized patients presenting with fractures from falls or blows aged between 20 and 49 years old were used. There were 549 types of fractures for 57 bones and 12 anatomical regions observed. We first tested various models according to the sensibility of random forest parameters and their effects on model accuracies. The best model was based on the binary coding of 12 anatomical regions or 28 bones with or without baseline (age and sex). Our method achieved the highest accuracy rate of 83% in the distinction between falls and blows. Our findings pave the way for applications to help forensic experts and archaeologists. Background: Midface skeletal changes through aging have been conceptualized as a clockwise rotation relative to the cranial base. This finding is mainly supported by cross-sectional population studies based on comparisons between groups of individuals in different age ranges. Few papers have evaluated the intra-individual evolution of the facial skeleton, and those that have included only a limited number of patients.Objectives: The authors sought to analyze the intra-individual evolution of the facial skeleton.Methods: We conducted a retrospective study including patients who underwent 2 separate facial computed tomography scans (T1 and T2) with a minimum gap of 7 years. Employing 3-dimensional reconstructions, we measured and compared 7 facial angles (glabellar, orbital, piriform, maxillary, subdental, chin, gonial) and 6 facial distances (lacrimal crest, orbital floor, piriform, zygoma, labiomental, gnathion) on both computed tomography scans.Results: A total of 56 patients (29 males and 27 females) were included. Mean ages at T1 and T2 were 50 and 59 y, respectively. We found a significant decrease between T1 and T2 in facial angles at the midface (glabella, orbital, piriform, and maxillary angles, all P < 0.0001). We found a significant increase in all facial distances between T1 and T2 for the overall population and for men (all P < 0.05). For women, all distances increased, but only piriform and zygoma distances showed significant changes (P < 0.001 and P < 0.04, respectively). Bone remodeling appeared earlier in women.Conclusions: Our study confirms the clockwise rotation of the midface during aging. One of the goals of the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE) is to map the existing education and practice opportunities in the field of forensic anthropology in order to support the development of the discipline and to optimize the training courses provided by the Society. To address this goal, an online questionnaire was sent to European and South African practitioners of forensic anthropology and related disciplines in 2016. The results of the questionnaire showed that the status and roles of forensic anthropologists vary depending on the national legal systems, education, and employment status of the practitioners. Despite the fact that the expertise of forensic anthropologists has been increasingly requested in a variety of investigations and the spectrum of tasks has become broader, including identification of living persons, specialized education in forensic anthropology is still restricted to a few graduate and postgraduate programs in European countries and to annual FASE courses. During prenatal development, the brain is considered the best maturation criterion for the estimation of foetal physiological age, regardless of the conditions of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the brain lyses very quickly after death, but fortunately, the brain also has a major influence over osseous structures of the cranial base during development. Therefore, we considered the osseous structures of the cranial base potential indirect maturation indicators of foetal age. Because of its early formation and robustness, the basioccipital is a cranial base bone that is often used for studies in biological anthropology. Studies generally use conventional morphometry and bone size ratio to highlight morphological changes occurring during the foetal period and to create age estimation methods. These methods usually define thresholds beyond which the morphology of the basioccipital changes, but do not fully consider the form that might be valuable precisely to visualize its development or improve age estimation methods. Using geometric morphometric methods, the present study aims to analyse the development of the basioccipital during the second and third trimesters of foetal life by quantifying and visualizing shape changes in the inferior view. Basioccipital shapes are used as direct indicators of the maturation of the cranial base and as indirect indicators of the maturation of the brain and, by extension, the whole body. A sample of 221 anonymized computed tomographic (CT) scans of normal foetuses, ranging from 18 to 41 gestational weeks (GW), was used. Elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) was used to quantify the basioccipital outline, and maturation stages were established to visualize shape changes with a principal component analysis. Our study allowed us precisely to quantify and continuously visualize shape changes occurring during prenatal life. Additionally, this study provides the first evidence of two distinct linear shape trajectories of the basioccipital. Foetuses aged between 18 and 26 GW have a rapid shape change with well‐individualized stages, whereas shape changes are less visible in the second trajectory (27–41 GW). Furthermore, intra‐stage shape variation is higher for the basioccipital at the beginning of the second and third trimesters than at the first trimester. By using geometric morphometric methods and EFA, this study shows that it was possible to go beyond classical methods. Indeed, the developed methodology enabled the first quantification of the overall shape changes of the basioccipital between gestational ages. This case study reports the anthropological analysis of bones remains discovered on Riou Island (Marseille, France) and the story of two World War II fighter pilots. The discovery of bones on "The Fountain of the Greeks" square on Riou Island occurred in the 1960's and a first anthropological study described a 35-year-old man, about 1.77 m tall, buried since an estimated period between the 13th and 16th centuries. The case was "closed" and the bones were considered as isolated archaeological remains. Few years later, near the coasts of Riou Island, parts of two planes were discovered. One was from of a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4 of the Luftwaffe piloted by Prince Alexis fürst zu Bentheim und Steinfurt, and the other from a French P-38 Lightning F-5 B piloted by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Therefore, the identification of the skeletal remains mentioned above was then thought to be perhaps one of the two World War II pilots. Subadult age estimation should rely on sampling and statistical protocols capturing development variability for more accurate age estimates. In this perspective, measurements were taken on the fifth lumbar vertebrae and/or clavicles of 534 French males and females aged 0–19 years and the ilia of 244 males and females aged 0–12 years. These variables were fitted in nonparametric multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) models with 95% prediction intervals (PIs) of age. The models were tested on two independent samples from Marseille and the Luis Lopes reference collection from Lisbon. Models using ilium width and module, maximum clavicle length, and lateral vertebral body heights were more than 92% accurate. Precision was lower for postpubertal individuals. Integrating punctual nonlinearities of the relationship between age and the variables and dynamic prediction intervals incorporated the normal increase in interindividual growth variability (heteroscedasticity of variance) with age for more biologically accurate predictions. Abstract: Objectives: The evaluation of developmental stability (DS) by measuring fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a bioindicator of general cumulative stress, is an approach that has often been used to characterize health status in past populations. New techniques of geometric morphometrics now enable a better appreciation of FA than before, with a more refined quantification of variation. The aim of our study is to determine the effectiveness of geometric morphometrics analyses of asymmetry in the human femur for the study of individual DS and inferring health status of human populations. Materials and methods: We conducted a comparative analysis between two diachronic populations of distinct and known health status. Two samples of 70 pairs of adult femurs from individuals of comparable age range and sex were selected and CT‐scanned. For each 3D reconstruction, two sets of 27 landmarks were digitized to quantify and minimize the effect of measurement error on the evaluation of FA. Results: While the measurement of FA in femoral centroid size seemed comparable between the samples, the amount of FA in femoral shape differed. Individuals who experienced high levels of environmental stress presented higher intra‐individual variation. In parallel, results did not reveal any significant differences in DS between sexes or age groups. Discussion: The geometric morphometrics analysis of femoral asymmetry was effective for distinguishing two populations. After considering various factors of influence, genetics and biomechanics seem to have a limited impact on the results. Abstract: Sex estimation is a key objective of forensic science. We aimed to establish whether maxillary sinus volumes (MSV) could assist in estimating an individual's sex. One hundred and three CT scans were included. MSV were determined using three‐dimensional reconstructions. Two observers performed three‐dimensional MSV reconstructions using the same methods. Intra‐ and interobserver reproducibility were statistically compared using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (α = 5%). Both intra‐ and interobserver reproducibility were perfect regarding MSV; both ICCs were 100%. There were no significant differences between right and left MSV (p = 0.083). No correlation was found between age and MSV (p > 0.05). We demonstrated the existence of sexual dimorphism in MSV (p < 0.001) and showed that MSV measurements gave a 68% rate of correct allocations to sex group. The pars basilaris of the occipital bone is often found intact when fetal or infant bones are discovered. In the literature, several methods use measurements of this bone for juvenile's age-at-death estimation, but it has already been demonstrated that they can come along methodological and statistical biases. In this study, new age prediction formulas were created from a learning sample of 208 CT scans of fetuses and infants from Marseilles (France) with normal development. The two statistically validated models, with a prediction interval of 95 % of reliability, were tested on a separate sample of 68 individuals, for which we ensured that they did not show any developmental pathology. Models show an average of 97.06 % of correct age estimates, compared to less than 26.6 % when using previously published which tend to overestimate age. The new age estimation formulas make it possible to estimate fetuses and infants age with very good results up to 2 postnatal months. Results are both reliable and precise enough for forensic practice, and we provide an automated tool (a simple excel spreadsheet) to ensure an easy and quick access to the application of this method. Frontal sinuses ( FSs) have been studied in radiology, anthropology, and forensic anthropology. This study aimed to determine whether it was possible to predict the age and sex of an individual using FS volume. Sixty-nine anonymized CT scans were imported to MIMICS 10.01® software (Materialise N. V.), and each FS volume was calculated in mm3. There was an absence of significant difference between right and left FS volume ( p = 0.173) and an absence of correlation between age and FS volume (Pearson's test; p = 0.705). Sexual dimorphism was significantly different ( p = 0.001). However, the most discriminant datum for determining sex was found to be the total FS volume (sum of an individual's right and left FS volumes) with linear discriminant Fisher's function coefficients of −2.759 for the male group and −1.275 for the female group. Simple Summary: In forensic anthropology, estimating the age-at-death of young juvenile skeletons is crucial as a direct determinant of legal issues in many countries. Most methods published for this purpose are based on either maturation or growth processes (two essential components of development) and focus on "normal" (i.e., nonpathological) growth. However, when the osseous remains available for study are from an individual that experienced an altered growth process, age estimation may be biased, and accounting for this would be helpful for potentially avoiding inaccuracies in estimation. In this research, we developed a method based on the combined evaluation of both maturation and growth. Maturation is evaluated by the conformation of the pars basilaris, a bone at the skull base that provides an indirect estimate of brain maturation, while growth is assessed using femoral biometry. The method was tested on two medical validation samples of normal and pathological individuals. The results show that it was possible to identify "uncoupling" between maturation and growth in 22.8% of the pathological individuals. Highlighting potential uncoupling is therefore an essential step in assessing the confidence of an age estimate, and its presence should lead experts to be cautious in their conclusions in court. The coupling between maturation and growth in the age estimation of young individuals with altered growth processes was analyzed in this study, whereby the age was determined using a geometric morphometrics method. A medical sample comprising 223 fetuses and infants was used to establish the method. The pars basilaris shapes, quantified by elliptic Fourier analysis, were grouped into consensus stages to characterize the maturation process along increasing age groups. Each pars basilaris maturation stage was "coupled" to biometry by defining an associated femur length range. The method was tested on a validation sample of 42 normal individuals and a pathological sample of 114 individuals whose pathologies were medically assessed. Couplings were present in 90.48% of the normal sample and 77.19% of the pathological sample. The method was able to detect "uncoupling" (i.e., possibly altered growth) in more than 22.8% of samples, even if there was no visible traces of pathology on bones in most cases. In conclusion, experts should be warned that living conditions may cause alterations in the development of young individuals in terms of uncoupling, and that the age-at-death estimation based on long bone biometry could be biased. In a forensic context, when age has been estimated in cases where uncoupling is present, experts should be careful to take potential inaccuracies into account when forming their conclusions. Two probabilist methods of age prediction in children are proposed: they are both based on the radiological presence of erupted teeth or germs. Using an apprenticeship sample of known age and sex, we established several discriminant models (±13,±16,±18 years old). We also evaluated a Bayesian model with the following age groups: <13, [13–16[, [16–18[, &ges;18 years old, or [X and Y] years old. When applied on a known test sample, Fisher''s linear functions presented a success rate greater than 90%, above 13 years threshold, and below 16 and 18 years thresholds, and Bayesian approach, greater than 85%. Objectives: A decisional tool was developed to select sub-adult age estimation methods referenced in a centralized database. Through a freely accessible webpage interface, this tool allows users to evaluate how much the sampling and statistical protocols of these referenced methods comply with methodological recommendations published for building and applying methods in forensic anthropology.Materials and Methods: 261 publications on sub-adult age estimation were collected. Three search parameters describing the anatomical element(s) and the indicators used to obtain age estimates are chosen by the user to filter the database and present the publications that best correspond to the user's selection. A simple algorithm was created to score age estimation methods according to their relevance and validity. "Relevance" and "Validity" parameters indicate how much a publication complies with user queries and published methodological recommendations, respectively; "Score" is a combination of "Relevance" and "Validity". The closer these parameters are to 1, the better the method complies with the user's choice and standardized protocols.Results: The publications resulting from the user's query appear as search results alphabetically. They are characterized by their "Relevance", "Validity" and "Score" values and descriptors relating to their methodology, sampling and statistical protocols. The reference of the publications and an URL to access them online are also provided.Conclusions: SAMS is a decisional tool based on a centralized database for selecting, accessing and evaluating sub-adult age estimation methods based on published methodological recommendations. Protocol validity can be easily and fully accessed to provide the necessary information for method evaluation. Histomorphometric methods for age-at-death estimation constitute alternatives to macroscopic ones in the forensic context. However, all new methods must be tested on independent samples to justify their use and assure their accuracy. The main goal of this study was to test a new age-at-death method presented by Goliath et al. (2016) on a sample of 29 decalcified femur sections from individuals autopsied in the Institute of Legal Medicine of Montpellier, France. The formula proposed by the authors was not efficient to estimate the age-at-death in our sample, with only four out of 29 individuals well estimated. Despite this result, the same relationship between age and histomorphometric criteria was found, though at a lower intensity than what Goliath et al. previously found in their study. The use of a different bone preparation technique from Goliath et al. does not allow us to propose a definitive conclusion on the accuracy of this method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study proposes equations for age determination both in living and dead children, obtained with the help of stepwise ascending multiple linear regression. The equations should be applied, based on the number of erupted teeth and tooth germs, which were detected on radiographs, during clinical examination and in infant skeletal remains. The proposed equations proved to be efficient just like Demirjian’s method used as a reference today, and permit age estimation till 20 years of age. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
