Gait asymmetry is typically evaluated using spatio-temporal or joint kinematics parameters. Only a few studies addressed the problem of defining an asymmetry index directly based on muscle activity, extracting parameters from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. Moreover, no studies used the extraction of the muscle principal activations (activations that are necessary for accomplishing a specific motor task) as the base to construct an asymmetry index, less affected by the variability of sEMG patterns. The aim of this paper is to define a robust index to quantitatively assess the asymmetry of muscle activations during locomotion, based on the extraction of the principal activations. SEMG signals were analyzed combining statistical gait analysis (SGA) and a clustering algorithm that allows for obtaining the muscle principal activations. We evaluated the asymmetry levels of four lower limb muscles in: (1) healthy subjects of different ages (children, adults, and elderly); (2) different populations of orthopedic patients (adults with megaprosthesis of the knee after bone tumor resection, elderly subjects after total knee arthroplasty, and elderly subjects after total hip arthroplasty); and (3) neurological patients (children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and elderly subjects affected by idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus). The asymmetry index obtained for each pathological population was then compared to that of age-matched controls. We found asymmetry levels consistent with the expected impact of the different pathologies on muscle activation during gait. Automated motion reduction in dynamic infrared imaging is on demand in clinical applications, since movement disarranges time−temperature series of each pixel, thus originating thermal artifacts that might bias the clinical decision. All previously proposed registration methods are feature based algorithms requiring manual intervention. The aim of this work is to optimize the registration strategy specifically for Breast Dynamic Infrared Imaging and to make it user−independent. We implemented and evaluated 3 different 3D time−series registration methods: 1. Linear affine, 2. Non−linear Bspline, 3. Demons applied to 12 datasets of healthy breast thermal images. The results are evaluated through normalized mutual information with average values of 0.70 ±0.03, 0.74 ±0.03 and 0.81 ±0.09 (out of 1) for Affine, Bspline and Demons registration, respectively, as well as breast boundary overlap and Jacobian determinant of the deformation field. The statistical analysis of the results showed that symmetric diffeomorphic Demons' registration method outperforms also with the best breast alignment and non−negative Jacobian values which guarantee image similarity and anatomical consistency of the transformation, due to homologous forces enforcing the pixel geometric disparities to be shortened on all the frames. To better understand and predict Oregon coho ( Oncorhynchus kisutch) marine survival, we developed a conceptual model of processes occurring during four sequential periods: (1) winter climate prior to smolt migration from freshwater to ocean, (2) spring transition from winter downwelling to spring/summer upwelling, (3) the spring upwelling season and (4) winter ocean conditions near the end of the maturing coho's first year at sea. We then parameterized a General Additive Model (GAM) with Oregon Production Index (OPI) coho smolt-to-adult survival estimates from 1970 to 2001 and environmental data representing processes occurring during each period (presmolt winter SST, spring transition date, spring sea level, and post-smolt winter SST). The model explained a high and significant proportion of the variation in coho survival ( R2 = 0.75). The model forecast of 2002 adult survival rate ranged from 4 to 8%. Our forecast was higher than predictions based on the return of precocious males (‘jacks’), and it won't be known until fall 2002 which forecast is most accurate. An advantage to our environmentally based predictive model is the potential for linkages with predictive climate models, which might allow for forecasts more than 1 year in advance. Relationships between the environmental variables in the GAM and others (such as the North Pacific Index and water column stratification) provided insight into the processes driving production in the Pacific Northwest coastal ocean. Computer simulation techniques, such as the Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA), allow us to predict accurately and efficiently the propagation of acoustic and ultrasonic waves or pulses in complex (heterogeneous and/or anisotropic) media. For a quantitative comparison with experimental results it is necessary to properly include in the model the attenuation and dispersion properties of the propagation medium. A spring model is used to derive heuristically the iteration equations, which yield stable and convergent simulations of the wave propagation even in the case of attenuative, dispersive and/or nonlinear media. In this comparative study of fishery production from 14 semi-enclosed marine statistical areas around Europe, GIS techniques were used to estimate some simple geographical parameters in both these areas and their surrounding catchments. Indices included the ratio of catchment area to sea area, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) pigmentation intensity from remote sensing imagery and a simple index of the degree of geographical enclosure. These indices were compared with the ratio of pelagic to demersal plus invertebrate landings (the P/D ratio). The P/D ratio appears to be a proxy for the differential impact of nutrients on pelagic and benthic system, in that benthic/demersal components are negatively affected by hypoxia resulting from excess primary production, which has less negative effects, (or may even be positive), for pelagic fish production. P/D ratios shows a wide dynamic range from <1.0 for nutrient-limited or oligotrophic seas (e.g. the Aegean and Ionian) to 10 and more for more eutrophic water bodies such as the Black and Azov Seas. Chl-a appears related to the degree of enclosure, perhaps implying significant nutrient run-off from land, while the P/D ratio appears to be correlated with the mean Chl-a value. Cannabis sativa is the most used controlled substance in Europe. With the advent of new and less restrictive European laws on cannabis sale for recreational use (including in Italy), an increase in indoor cannabis crops were observed. This increase was possible due to the availability of cannabis seeds through the internet market. Genetic identification of cannabis can link seizures and if in possession then might aid in an investigation. A 13-locus multiplex STR method was previously developed and validated by Houston et al. A collaborative exercise was organized by the Italian Forensic Geneticists - International Society of Forensic Genetics (Ge.F.I. - ISFG) Working Group with the aim to test the reproducibility, reliability and robustness of this multiplex cannabis STR kit. Twenty-one laboratories from three European countries participated in the collaborative exercise and were asked to perform STR typing of two cannabis samples. Cannabis DNA samples and the multiplex STR kit were provided by the University of Barcelona and Sam Houston State University. Different platforms for PCR amplification, capillary electrophoresis (CE) and genotyping software were selected at the discretion of the participating laboratories. Although the participating laboratories used different PCR equipment, CE platforms and genotyping software, concordant results were obtained from the majority of the samples. The overall genotyping success ratio was 96%. Only minor artifacts were observed. The mean peak height ratio was estimated to be 76.3% and 78.1% for sample 1 and sample 2, respectively. The lowest amount of -1 / + 1 stutter percentage produced, when the height of the parent allele was higher than 8000 RFU, resulted to be less than 10% of the parent allele height. Few common issues were observed such as a minor peak imbalance in some heterozygous loci, some artifact peaks and few instances of allelic drop-out. The results of this collaborative exercise demonstrated the robustness and applicability of the 13-locus system for cannabis DNA profiling for forensic purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper a morphological differentiation tool of bovine and equine hair for their identification in forensic investigations is provided. 30 animals were used, fifteen adult bovines of the "Siboney de Cuba" breed and fifteen adult equines of the "Criolla" breed. These species are the most bred in Cuba and, at the same time, the most exposed to poaching and theft crimes. Hair from the cows was sampled from the dorsal region, the lateral region and the ventral region; on the other hand, the horses' hair was sampled from the dorsal region of the body, of the mane and of the tail. The sampled areas, different for bovine and equine, have been chosen because they represent the different types of hairs present in the two species under examination. Getty et al. (2004), infact, reported that both in cattle and horses the length and thickness of the hair is reduced in a dorsal-ventral direction towards the abdomen, increasing its density. The samples were observed at an optical microscope with LCD display, at lens 4X, 10X, 40X and 100X, to determine cuticle scales, cortex, medulla and medullary index. As a result, it was noticed that both bovine and equine hair show a morphological and histomorphometric pattern based on the characteristics of the constitutive structures: cuticle scales, cortex and medulla. The bovines show a thin cuticle, coronal scales in mosaic with serrated edges and flattened irregularly, while in the equines it is thin and imbricated with irregular waves and intermediate spaces. The cortex in the bovines is thin crust dark brown and not pigmented; in the equines the cortex is dark brown, with light texture and isolated dark brown and black pigments. In both species, the white hairs do not show pigments. Through this investigation it can be noticed that one of the most important aspects in the species identification in forensic analysis is the medullary index, since it allows differentiation between animal and human species. Purpose Gene expression profiling (GEP) of endomyocardial biopsies (EMB) by the MMDx system has been shown to estimate the probability of T-cell mediated (TCMR) and antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), improving the histology-based diagnoses in heart transplant (HT) recipients. Second generation analysis allowed to identify an additional phenotype characterised by molecules related to tissue injury (INJ), such as de-differentiation pathways, macrophages transcripts, and heart transcripts. The clinical correlates of this novel profile and its association with ISHLT pathology grading is under development. In this study we analyse the association of MMDx novel profiles with cardiac function and with ISHLT grades for TCMR and AMR. Methods 254 EMBs from 121 patients were analysed with MMDx platform. EMBs were performed according to standard protocol during the first 5 years after transplant and by clinical indication later on. Right heart catheretization was performed at the time of EMB, which were graded by 1990 and 2006 ISHLT classifications for TCMR and 2014 guidelines for AMR. Results Prevalence of molecular phenotypes varied during time course: INJ was frequent in the first months, absent during the first 5 years, and rose again in late for-cause EMBs; AMR peaked early and late after transplant, in line with DSA time-course; TCMR probability was meaningful in the early months only. Cardiac function also varied across the three profiles: INJ was significantly associated with low cardiac index (CI) and high right atrial pressure, AMR with elevated wedge pressure and low CI, and TCMR with low CI only. Overall, GEP was in agreement with pathology readings in most cases, being normal in 90% of the 0 graded EMB, and abnormal in over 70% of the 2R or pAMR2. While current 1R grade showed abnormal GEP only in 37% of cases, the old 1B grade had abnormal GEP in 60% of cases, mostly associated with AMR profile. INJ profile was found in 54% of the 2R or greater EMBs. Conclusion GEP reveals variable molecular patterns during transplant time course; INJ phenotype appears associated mainly with low CI in the context of post-operative injury and severe mixed rejection, while AMR seems to increase markers of graft stiffness. Despite good overall agreement with pathology readings, current ISHLT grading is inaccurate, with the "old" 1B grade being highly associated with AMR molecular profiling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results obtained on DNA extracted from ocular (scleral/corneal) swabs collected from exhumed bodies at different times of burial. To our knowledge, there are no publications in the scientific forensic literature dealing with sclera/cornea as a source of DNA in the forensic laboratory. The obtained results demonstrate that cornea/sclera swabbing might be a promising alternative to the sampling of other tissues for DNA extraction even in highly putrefied bodies. The postoperative course was evaluated for 458 consecutive patients, all over the age of 56 years, who had undergone laryngeal conservation surgery in the last 10 years. One hundred seventy-one patients aged 66 and over made up the "elderly" group and 287 patients, aged between 56 and 65 years formed the control group. It was confirmed that cordectomy and frontolateral laryngectomy are feasible even in elderly patients. Bronchopneumonia is the most frequent and serious complication after supraglottic laryngectomy. Therefore this operation should be performed in the elderly patient only after a thorough evaluation of cardiac and respiratory function. Prophylactic neck dissection should not be done for N0 necks and the second therapeutic neck dissection in N2 cancers should be staged 6 or more weeks later. Hemilaryngopharyngectomy and subtotal reconstructive laryngectomy with cricohyoidpexis are not advisable in elderly patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
