In peanut cultivation in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Japan, it is essential to complete the harvest by early October to prevent frost damage. Therefore, cultivation methods that can accelerate the flowering period are necessary. It is understood that planting density can influence the timing of flowering, with crops often flowering earlier at higher densities. This study aimed to investigate whether growing peanuts at higher densities could advance the flowering period and, consequently, enhance yield. The Japanese peanut variety, Tachimasari, was cultivated in 2022 and 2023 at a conventional planting density of 5.8 plant m−2 (D5.8) and at density conditions of 8.7 plant m−2 (D8.7) and 11.6 plant m−2 (D11.6). The D8.7 and D11.6 plants reached the peak of flowering 2.8 and 5.1 days earlier, respectively, and the end of flowering 3.7 and 8.0 days earlier than the D5.8 plants. Although the total number of flowers was higher in D5.8, pod fertility was greater in D8.7 and D11.6, where plants were able to reduce the occurrence of ineffective flowers and immature pods. Consequently, higher seed yields were observed in D8.7 (2709 kg ha−1) and D11.6 (2754 kg ha−1), where lower individual productivity was offset by higher planting densities, compared to the conventional density condition of D5.8 (2169 kg ha−1). The CFA ratio, calculated using pretreatment C‐reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, and albumin levels (CRP × fibrinogen/albumin), was previously reported to be a significant prognostic factor for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This multicenter retrospective study evaluated the prognostic value of the CFA ratio in 328 adult patients with newly diagnosed AML from April 2000 to March 2018. The median age was 49.5 years (range, 15–75 years), and 60.7% of the population were males. According to the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) risk classification, 67 patients (20.4%) were in the favorable‐risk group, 197 patients (60.1%) in the intermediate‐risk group, and 58 patients (17.7%) in the adverse‐risk group. The median CFA ratio was 1.07 (0–67.69). Based on the calculated cutoff CFA ratio of 1.44, the cohort included 176 and 152 patients with low and high CFA ratios, respectively. At a median follow‐up of 91.2 months, the 7‐year overall survival (OS) and disease‐free survival (DFS) rates were 51.2% and 48.6%, respectively, in the overall cohort. The 7‐year OS rates were 61.7% and 39.0% in the low and high CFA ratio groups, respectively (p < 0.001). The 7‐year DFS rates were 58.1% and 37.0% in the low and high CFA ratio groups, respectively (p = 0.004). In univariate analysis, age ≥50 years, male sex, ELN risk class, and comorbidities were associated with poor OS. Age, ELN risk class, comorbidities, and high CFA ratio were associated with poor OS in multivariate analysis. Subgroup analysis revealed that the CFA ratio was significant in the intermediate and adverse ELN risk classes. These findings indicate the prognostic significance of the CFA ratio in AML. A dual-purpose cultivation system allows cereals to produce both roughage and concentrate during one growing season. To establish a cultivation system for rye, the appropriate time for foliage mowing was determined to ensure a yield of nutrient-rich roughage from the first crop and abundant grain from the second crop. This is because the stage of growth at defoliation affects the yield and quality of both crops. The experimental rye line '4R-504' was grown in two successive cropping seasons; 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. Foliage was mowed at three different growth stages: the booting stage (BT), the early-heading stage (EH), and the fully heading stage (FH). Along with the growth stage, the plants grew taller, and the highest dry matter yield in the first crop was observed in FH (757 g m−2), which was 1.5 times higher than that in BT (480 g m−2). Although the nutritional value was higher in plants harvested at an earlier growth stage, the EH and FH plants showed a higher dry matter yield, resulting in a higher production of metabolizable energy per area. Plants that had been mowed earlier regrew vigorously and produced an abundant amount of grains in the second crop. BT showed the highest grain yield of 239 g m−2, which corresponds to 60% of the yield from the unmowed control. FH produced grains of only 76 g m−2, which barely met the requirement of the dual-purpose cropping system. To enhance the nutritional yield of roughage, it is recommended to harvest the first crop at the early heading stage. Persistency of plant growth is closely related to the manner of resource allocation; however, plants often shift the pattern of resource allocation depending on their growth condition. We examined how the plants with different levels of persistency change their resource allocation patterns in response to defoliation using three Lolium species: L. temulentum (annual); L. multiflorum (predominantly annual but occasionally overwinter); and L. perenne (perennial). We subjected the plants to clipping treatment by excising approximately 70% of the aboveground body parts of the plants from the three species, and compared the growth pattern of clipped plants with that of the intact controls. Lolium species with different persistency have developed different reaction norms for resource allocation to clipping treatment. After clipping, L. temulentum and L. multiflorum maintained the proportion of reproductive tillers and seed productivity resulting in an increase in the resource investment in the development of reproductive parts, which was compensated with the loss of allocation to the development of vegetative parts. Annual species, which can propagate themselves only through seed generation, possibly enhanced seed production to ensure regeneration under undesirable condition at the cost of vegetative growth. In contrast, L. perenne invested more resources in foliage development by reducing seed production in response to clipping treatment. Perennial plants that can endure adverse effects possibly allocate substantial portion of the resources to vegetative growth for ensuring survival. L. multiflorum showed similar regrowth habits with respect to the constant foliage and seed production per panicle as those of L. perenne, but differed from those of L. temulentum. The Amazonian wild rice Oryza grandiglumis has two contrasting adaptation mechanisms to flooding submergence: a quiescence response to complete submergence at the seedling stage and an escape response based on internodal elongation to partial submergence at the mature stage. We investigated possible factors that trigger these responses. In stem segments excised from mature O. grandiglumis plants, complete submergence only slightly promoted internodal elongation with increased ethylene levels in the internodes, while partial submergence substantially promoted internodal elongation without increased ethylene levels in the internodes. Incubation of non-submerged stem segments under a continuous flow of humidified ethylene-free air promoted internodal elongation to the same extent as that observed for partially submerged segments. Applied ethylene had little effect on the internodal elongation of non-submerged segments irrespective of humidity conditions. These results indicate that the enhanced internodal elongation of submerged O. grandiglumis plants is not triggered by ethylene accumulated during submergence but by the moist surroundings provided by submergence. The growth of shoots in O. grandiglumis seedlings was not promoted by ethylene or complete submergence, as is the case in O. sativa cultivars possessing the submergence-tolerant gene SUB1A . However, because the genome of O. grandiglumis lacks the SUB1A gene, the quiescence response of O. grandiglumis seedlings to complete submergence may be regulated by a mechanism distinct from that involved in the response of submergence-tolerant O. sativa cultivars.
