The GEMAS project started in 2008 with a joint field campaign of almost all geological surveys in Europe in cooperation with some external organizations. 2211 samples of agricultural soil and 2118 samples from land under permanent grass cover were collected from a large part of Europe over a total area of about 5 million sqkm. Analysis of 53 chemical elements were carried out and The initial results indicate that nature, geology and climate are the major driving forces for the mapped distribution of element patterns at the European scale. Once completed, this project will deliver good quality and comparable exposure data of metals in agricultural and grazing land soil.

This investigation focused on topsoils (n = 122) and vertical profiles (n = 6) distributed over an area of 250 km² in the eastern-central Peloritani Mountains, northeastern Sicily. Georeferenced concentration of 53 elements (including potentially harmful ones), determined by ICP-MS after an aqua regia leach, were used to produce geochemical maps by means of a GIS-aided spatial interpolation process. Results show that there are two distinct areas: the larger, located between the Fiumendinisi, Budali and Ali villages, and the other between C. Postlioni and Femmina Morta, which contain anomalous As (up to 727 mg/kg), Sb (up to 60 mg/kg), Ag (up to 1 mg/kg) and Au (up to 0.1 mg/kg) concentrations. Most of the investigated areas have high contamination levels for As, Zn, Sb, and Pb that exceed the threshold values (As = 20 mg/kg, Zn = 150 mg/kg, Sb = 10 mg/kg and Pb = 100 mg/kg) established for soils by the Italian Environmental Law (Decreto Legislativo 2006, number 152). The isotopic ratios of 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb have been measured in selected soils on both leaches [using 1M HNO3-1.75M HCl (50:50)] and residues thereof. Soil leach reflects possible anthropogenic contamination, whereas soil residues indicate geogenic contributions. Results suggest that most of contamination in the soils is related to the presence of sulphide and sulphosalt rock-forming minerals in the surveyed area. The soil fraction contains a Pb value >1600 mg/kg and has ratios of 1.1695 for 206Pb/207Pb and 2.4606 for 208Pb/207Pb. Only one soil leach isotopic composition could reflect possible anthropogenic contamination. The correlation among As, Zn, Pb contents v. Pb isotopic signatures of 206Pb/207Pb indicates that surface and deep soils collected from profiles are dominated by geogenic compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Dysphagia remains a side effect influencing the quality of life of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) after radiotherapy. We evaluated the relationship between planned dose involvement and acute and late dysphagia in patients with HNC treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), after a recontouring of constrictor muscles (PCs) and the cricopharyngeal muscle (CM). Methods: Between December 2011 and December 2013, 56 patients with histologically proven HNC were treated with IMRT or volumetric-modulated arc therapy. The PCs and CM were recontoured. Correlations between acute and late toxicity and dosimetric parameters were evaluated. End points were analysed using univariate logistic regression. Results: An increasing risk to develop acute dysphagia was observed when constraints to the middle PCs were not respected [mean dose (Dmean) ⩾50Gy, maximum dose (Dmax) >60Gy, V50 >70% with a p=0.05]. The superior PC was not correlated with acute toxicity but only with late dysphagia. The inferior PC was not correlated with dysphagia; for the CM only, Dmax >60Gy was correlated with acute dysphagia ⩾ grade 2. Conclusion: According to our analysis, the superior PC has a major role, being correlated with dysphagia at 3 and 6 months after treatments; the middle PC maintains this correlation only at 3 months from the beginning of radiotherapy, but it does not have influence on late dysphagia. The inferior PC and CM have a minimum impact on swallowing symptoms. Advances In Knowledge: We used recent guidelines to define dose constraints of the PCs and CM. Abstract: Microbiological studies have always had an important role in the evaluation of drinking water quality. However, since geological processes are the most important factors controlling the source and distribution of chemical elements in natural waters, the importance of geochemical data must not be underestimated. This study presents data on pH, conductivity and concentrations of 69 elements and ions (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Ga, Gd, Ge, Hf, Hg, Ho, I, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Nd, Ni, Pb, Pr, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, Ti, Tl, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn, Zr, Br−, HCO3 −, Cl−, F−, NH4 +, NO2 −, NO3 −, PO4 3−, SO4 2−, SiO2) from 186 bottled mineral waters of 158 different Italian name brands. Analyses show a large range in concentrations for most of these elements, with variations up to four orders of magnitude. Our data demonstrate that some elements (such as Be), generally considered unlikely to occur, can instead reach surprisingly high levels in drinking water, and also how packaging can release some trace elements to the bottled water. Data analysis shows that the implementation of an international database of bottled water geochemistry and of potential toxicological effects is of paramount importance to provide a robust data set which would be useful to set international action levels and guidelines to secure bottled water quality, whose consumption has steadily increased in the recent years. A new formula to calculate nitrate and nitrite tolerable concentration levels in waters intended for human consumption is proposed, to take into account that about 5% of dietary nitrate in humans is converted to nitrite. Abstract: In this paper are discussed the baseline geochemical maps of elements harmful to human health, using concentration values of 2389 stream sediment samples collected over the Campania region (Southern Italy). Each sample was digested in aqua regia and analysed by ICP-MS. For compilation of baseline geochemical maps, a recently developed multifractal inverse distance weighted (lDW) interpolation method and spectral analysis (S-A) was applied, using a new geochemistry dedicated GIS software (GeoDAS). The aim of this study is to discriminate between the geogenic natural content (background) and the anthropogenic contribution in the collected sediments. The definition of background values, in contrast to baseline values, is very important in determining the extent of polluted areas in countries like Italy, where environmental legislation has not yet established intervention limits for stream sediments. In the Campania region, baseline and background values are often coincident, where the samples represent catchment basins away from urban or industrial areas. Potential polluted areas are often very small in size, except for some sites where the anthropogenic influence on sediments is clearly evident, due to the wide extent of local industrial and agricultural activities (e.g., the Sarno River catchment basin). R-mode factor analysis has proved very useful in distinguishing geochemical data, clearly dominated by anthropogenic in comparison to geogenic sources. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

One of the main problems in the design of high intensity rf accelerators is the presence of higher order modes (HOMs) which might degrade the beam quality. Accelerating cavities require HOMs suppression, whereas keeping a high quality factor (Q) for the fundamental mode. Both these requirements can be hardly met in closed metallic cavities, especially at high frequency where the configurations become cumbersome and technically unviable. Cavities based on photonic band gap (PBG) concepts showed that HOMs can be efficiently suppressed without affecting the fundamental mode. We present here simulations and measurements at room and cryogenic (77 K) temperature on some metallic (Copper) and metallo-dielectric (Copper + sapphire) PBG based cavities, in order to study their rf behavior as resonant element in particle accelerators. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Soil geochemistry is often investigated by considering a large number of variables, including major, minor and trace elements. Some of the variables are usually highly correlated due to coherent geochemical behaviour, but the effect of anthropic factors tends to increase data variability, sometimes obscuring natural relationships governing their distributions. In this framework it may be difficult to identify geochemical features linked to natural phenomena as well as to separate geogenic anomaly from the anthropogenic ones. Consequently the identification of background/baseline values may be seriously compromised. However, knowledge about these reference terms is fundamental to manage and protect natural resources on different scales. Moreover, adequate estimations of background/baseline values are possible only if a sufficient number of chemical analyses are stored in complex repositories. In this contribution the multi-element data archive of the Campania Region (Southern Italy) was explored from the CoDA (Compositional Data Analysis) multivariate perspective to characterise its structure. The archive contains abundance data of Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, Th, Ti, V and Zn (mg/kg) determined in 3535 new topsoils as well as information on coordinates, geology and land cover. Under CoDA the proportionality features of abundance data are fully taken into account enhancing their relative multivariate behaviour in the correct sample space. Results indicate that the structure of the whole matrix appears to be constituted by a core that geographically is mainly given by topsoils developed on volcanic materials and several outlier compositions whose origin is different. Anomalous compositions can originate from the robust barycentre all around when the following conditions are present: 1) high Na–K volcanic products, 2) limestones and dolostones with their terrigenous component, 3) flysch deposits or 4) fertiliser contribution. The (1 × D ) robust barycentre of the whole dataset together with the variation array of the core represents the most frequent (1 × D ) multi-element vector as well as the proportionality relationships among its components. Abstract: Lead isotope applications have been widely used in recent years in environmental studies conducted on different kinds of sampled media. In the present paper, Pb isotope ratios have been used to determine the sources of metal pollution in soils and waters in the Agro Aversano area. During three different sampling phases, a total of 113 surface soils (5–20cm), 20 samples from 2 soil profiles (0–1m), 11 stream waters and 4 groundwaters were collected. Major element concentrations in sampled media have been analyzed by the ICP-MS technique. Surface soils (20 samples), all soil profiles and all waters have been also analyzed for Pb isotope compositions by thermal ionization (TIMS). The geochemical data were assessed using statistic methods and cartographically elaborated in order to have a clear picture of the level of disturbance of the area. Pb isotopic data were studied to discriminate between anthropogenic and geologic sources. Our results show that As (5.6–25.6mg/kg), Cu (9–677mg/kg), Pb (22–193mg/kg), Tl (0.53–3.62mg/kg), V (26–142mg/kg) and Zn (34–215mg//kg) contents in analyzed soils, exceed the intervention limits fixed by the Italian Environmental Law for residential areas in some of the sampled sites, while intervention limit for industrial areas is exceeded only for Cu concentrations. Lead isotopic data, show that there is a high similarity between the ratios measured in the leached soil samples and those deriving from anthropic activities. This similarity with anthropogenic Pb is also evident in the ratios measured in both groundwater and stream water samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The isotopic signature of geogenic and anthropogenic materials, in combination with concentration data for pollutants, can help trace the origin and the extent of contamination in the environment. This approach is particularly effective if naturally occurring and anthropogenically introduced metals have different isotopic ratios. Lead isotope analysis on soils from 7 profiles (1m depth) and on groundwaters from 8 wells have been used to determine the impact of human activities on the surface environment of Domizio-Flegreo Littoral. Result obtained show that in sub-rural areas the isotopic composition of the samples collected along the soil profiles of Domizio-Flegreo Littoral is likely mostly controlled by the nature of the parent geologic material (natural) while in more urbanized areas (Giugliano) Pb isotopic composition in superficial soils is mostly influenced by anthropic sources such as motor vehicles. Lead isotopic ratios in groundwaters also show that the use of pesticides and, probably, the influence of aerosols and the presence of illegal waste disposal can influence water quality. Abstract: The use of bottled mineral waters use is increasingly becoming popular and the need for better knowledge of their chemical composition is a key issue for defining their quality, particularly for those elements that are not monitored on a regular basis. The link between geology and water chemistry is well known and can lead to extreme differences in element distribution and is an issue that needs to be addressed. Such an opportunity has been provided by a project of the EuroGeoSurvey Geochemistry Expert Group aimed at the characterization of groundwater geochemistry using bottled mineral waters purchased in supermarkets all over Europe. On these waters pH, conductivity and concentrations of 69 elements and ions were measured at the BGR geochemical laboratories. On a total of 1785 “samples”, 158 represent waters bottled in Italy in 126 different sites scattered throughout the country. Most of the purchased mineral water is packaged in PET bottles. In this paper, the dataset concerning Italy has been used to provide an overview on the relationship between natural concentration of the determined chemical elements in groundwater and geo-lithological features. These relationships have been investigated mostly taking into account the surface geology and other information available on water sources. Application of R-Mode factor analysis to the data set allowed the determination of the possible relationship between the distribution of individual elements and lithology or other surface enrichment phenomena. In particular waters draining through volcanic rocks are enriched in elements such as As, B, Br−, Cl−, Cs, I, K, Li, Na, NO3 −, PO4 3−, Rb, Sc, SiO2, Sr, Te, Ti, and V up to 3 orders of magnitude higher than waters draining through other lithologies. REE and Y show significant difference in median concentration due to interaction of waters with plutonic rocks. Many elements have a large spread of concentrations, which reflects natural variations and interaction with particular lithologies. One of the five R-mode factor analysis associations, recognized as being representative of elements analysed shows high nitrate and V loadings along with As, PO4 3− and Se. The latter association probably reflects a sign of anthropogenic contribution in some aquifers in volcano-sedimentary or silico-clastic deposits and in intensively cultivated areas.
