Acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) and malaria are not rare infections in tropical countries; however, in the European continent, such imported entity has not been reported up to now. Herein, we report a 24-year-old male suffering from malaria and hepatitis E, who was admitted with acute hepatic failure dark colored urine, followed by coagulation and inflammation parameters increase. Blood smear analysis revealed the presence of Plasmodium falciparum, while serological tests revealed anti-HEV IgM antibodies. After the recommended antimalarial drugs and supportive therapy, the patient survived and was discharged disease-free. Conclusions: Following WHO guidelines for the treatment of severe malaria, full recovery in patient was achieved.

Background and Objectives: Even though measles is easily prevented by vaccination, infection outbreaks are not rare. Infection carries a great risk for pulmonary complications, which are sometimes hard to predict, especially in a group of outpatients. This study aims to evaluate the association between serum CRP changes and the severity of respiratory complications in the group of inpatients treated for measles. Materials and Methods: A total of 207 patients admitted and treated at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, University Clinical Center, Nis, for measles infection were included in the analysis. The data collected from the patients’ medical records included demographic characteristics, disease duration, blood and serum biochemical analysis, general measles-associated symptoms, and disease outcome. Results: Results of the study revealed that there are almost no differences in the clinical presentation of patients with measles and those complicated with pneumonia. The examined CRP changes are found to correlate with the observable degree of pneumonia; however, they do not correspond to the changes visible in chest X-rays. Conclusions: CRP changes in the serum of patients with measles with mild clinical pictures could be a potential predictor for the development of some pulmonary complications.

Myiasis is one of the most common skin diseases found in travelers returning from tropical and subtropical regions, where humans living in or visiting the African continent are most commonly infested by C. anthropophaga during the rainy season in regions with a warm climate. Here, we present a case of furuncular myiasis caused by C. anthropophaga in a Serbian patient returning from temporary work in Kenya, where the initial histology of skin lesion mimicked hyperproliferative skin disorder.

The Ebola virus is a cause of the serious disease that causes hemorrhagic fevers — illnesses marked by severe bleeding (hemorrhage), organ failure and, in many cases, death. The virus is native to Africa, where sporadic outbreaks have occurred for decades. The current outbreak is the largest and there have been more cases of deaths in this outbreak than all others combined. Various degrees of hepatocellular necrosis have been reported in infected people and non-human primates; however, the hepatocellular lesions are generally not serious enough to explain the cause of death. Importantly, hemorrhagic tendencies could be related to decreased synthesis of coagulation and other plasma proteins because of severe hepatocellular necrosis. Supportive carerehydration with oral or intravenous fluids - and treatment of specific the symptoms improves the survival. There is as yet no proven treatment available for EVD.

Introduction: Radiation-induced breast angiosarcoma (RIBAS) is a rare adverse event associated with postoperative breast irradiation. The data from the literature indicate that RIBAS occurs in less than 0.3% of patients treated with adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer. Given the rarity, diverse clinical presentation, poor prognosis, and lack of consensus on the management, this study aimed to present experiences of our specialized cancer center with RIBAS, in terms of the incidence, presentation, management, and outcomes. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 10,834 breast cancer patients treated at the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia between January 2013 and June 2024 to detect patients that had breast-conserving surgery, followed by postoperative irradiation, and developed angiosarcoma in the irradiated area at least 3 years after radiotherapy, without distant metastases. The incidence, latency period, management, and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Results: A total of nine female patients with RIBAS were identified and included in this study. The median age at RIBAS diagnosis was 64 years (range: 36–68), with a median latency of 64 months (95% CI > 57) from irradiation to diagnosis. The mean tumor size was 55 mm (SD 32.78). Patients were followed for a median of 30 months (range: 7–40) after initial RIBAS surgery. Local recurrence occurred in seven patients (77.8%), with five undergoing re-do surgery with curative intent. Three patients developed distant metastases during follow-up. The median overall survival (OS) was 31 months (95% CI > 30), with a 3-year survival rate of 15.2% (95% CI 2.5–91.6%). The median local recurrence-free interval was 10 months (95% CI > 3). Median OS after RIBAS local recurrence and after breast cancer treatment was 17 months (95% CI > 15) and 108 months (95% CI > 88), respectively. Conclusions: RIBAS is a rare but increasingly prevalent adverse event associated with BC irradiation, marked by an aggressive disease course and high relapse rates. Awareness, prompt diagnosis, and a radical surgical approach with wide clear margins are critical for improving patients’ outcomes.

Introduction: HIV-infected patients are affected significantly more frequently by all types of lymphoma, with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) as the most prevalent histological type. Since the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) morbidity and mortality of DLBCL has been markedly reduced, which is primarily interpreted as a result of the drug-mediated immune reconstitution. Case Report: We present a previously healthy, 44-year-old HIV-infected man with DLBCL of the oral cavity, treated with immunochemotherapy and cART. During HIV-directed treatment, despite the successful virologic response, a satisfactory immunological response was not achieved. However, the patient had a 2-year complete remission after first-line treatment of DLBCL. Conclusion: Response to cART strongly predicts outcome in patients with DLBCL. Close monitoring of HIV-directed therapy efficacy, especially as to achievement of successful virologic response, independently associated with prolonged survival, is essential for estimating future DLBCL treatment strategies.

This paper analyses changes in the governance of urban nature in French urban policies over the past two decades. It demonstrates that the importance of “sustainable development” procedural principles has significantly declined in public policy agendas, a decline that has occurred alongside the rise to prominence of sectoral approaches based on performance and control, whether they focus on climate or urban biodiversity policies. Faced with these transformations in public action—namely the emergence of a centralized and sectoral management of urban policies ill-suited to the complex socio-environmental territories—collective movements in civil society are developing initiatives based on cooperation across territories. Consequently, the urban governance of nature reflects the conflicts between centralized policies and the composite and fragmented reality of the governance of nature in the city. We use the notion of “tinkering”, which refer to the general fragmentation of initiatives, actors, alliances and conflicts in the context of space usage in the field of urban nature, to describe these dynamics. Based on two studies of the urban policies developed by central French government authorities since the 1990s, we identify three principal discrepancies, based on three main separations, that illustrate “tinkering” with the governance of urban nature. The first relates to the discrepancy between “living nature” (biodiversity policies) and “physical-chemical nature” (in climate change policies) (Climate and biodiversity policies: sector-based governance). The second reflects the discrepancy between a technically oriented understanding of the environment and the sensory understanding of inhabitants (Discrepancies between representations and practices). Finally, the third concerns the different levels of action (Discrepancies in scale: the relationship between top-down and bottom-up governance).

Interest in the links between vegetation and urban climate dates rather far back in the history of ideas, but it takes a whole new dimension when reframed as an "ecosystem services and climate change adaptation" problem. This new association calls for articulation and evaluation, and thus implies a review of the different issues encountered when exploring the link between ecosystems and urban adaptation to climate change. In this paper, we first give an overview of the concept of "ecosystem services". We suggest a framework to analyse the usefulness of this notion in the design of urban adaptation strategies. We then review ecosystem services and disservices in relation with urban adaptation, arguing that this requires an integrated approach. Last, we tackle cross-scale interactions that are inherent to urban sustainability design, and question the greenway concept regarding its relevance to cross-scale urban adaptation to climate change.
