On the Brazilian coast, the commercialization of Anomalocardia flexuosa is based on fishing in natural banks, but its stocks have been declining. As an alternative to this limitation, laboratory production is promising for plans of repopulation and cultivation of A. flexuosa. Aiming to develop techniques for this purpose, the current study evaluated the influence of temperature and salinity on the rearing of A. flexuosa larvae. Two experiments were conducted: (1) the effect of different salinities (25, 30, and 35 g L- 1) on survival and growth in the larval stage of A. flexuosa, lasting seven days; and (2) the effect of temperature (22 and 26 ºC) on larval growth and survival, lasting ten days. In both experiments, the D larvae were stored in experimental units (2 L) with a density of 10 larvae mL-1. At salinities of 25 and 30 g L- 1 there were greater survival rates. When analyzing the final length and the daily growth rate, the higher values were observed at salinity of 25 g L- 1, 126.08 ± 1.45 µm and 8.33±0.20 µm day-1, respectively. Regarding temperature, 26 ºC showed better values both for survival (62.25 ± 3.48%) and larval development (210.19 ± 0.56 µm). Thus, to optimize productivity, it is recommended to maintain salinity between 25–30 g L- 1 and a temperature of 26 °C.

This study aimed to evaluate the growth of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis cultivated in Zarrouk culture medium and effluent from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in biofloc system. Four treatments were used: Control (100% Zarrouk), E50 (50% Zarrouk + 50% Tilapia effluent), E75 (25% Zarrouk + 75% Tilapia effluent), and E100 (100% Tilapia effluent), and the experiment lasted 10 days. Growth parameters such as maximum cell density (MCD), doubling time (DT), and growth rate (K) were daily evaluated, as well as pH and water temperature. In addition, the concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite-N (NO2-N), and nitrate-N (NO3-N) were analyzed in order to compare nitrogen absorption. Among treatments, E50 and E75 obtained higher maximum cell densities and presented an exponential growth rate similar to the control treatment. Regarding the concentrations of nitrogen compounds, a significant reduction was observed in all treatments, with an NO3-N uptake of 99%, followed by 80% of TAN and 90% of NO2-N. Thus, giving the results obtained, besides being able to grow in wastewater, A. platensis can also be used in bioremediation processes, confirming the potential of this species.

ABSTRACT: A type of dredge was introduced as fishing gear along the extractive bank of Mangue Seco - PE from which the largest annual catch of Anomalocardia flexuosa in the world is extracted. This study was carried out with the objective of estimating the selectivity of the new fishing gear and quantitatively evaluating the length classes most compromised by the catches, especially considering 20 mm as the reference value. Specimens larger than this size are most likely to be mature. For the selectivity estimation, the methodology using codends (16 or 20 mm) and small meshed cover (2 mm) was used. To estimate the selectivity parameters, a logistic regression and the Bayesian approach were used. The transition between the state in which the specimen is invulnerable to the fishing gear and vulnerable occurs between 10 and 18 mm, using a 16 mm mesh, and using a 20 mm mesh, this transition is between 14 and 20 mm. Dredgers with 16 mm and 20 mm mesh compromise a large proportion of specimens smaller than 20 mm. If the intention is to protect this part of the population, measures such as total restriction of the 16 mm mesh and use of the 20 mm mesh should be necessary only in the months of less catching incidences, or increasing the mesh to 25 mm.

ABSTRACT: Anomalocardia brasiliana post-larvae were cultured for 28 days to evaluate the effect of stocking density on their growth and survival rate. Three stocking densities were tested 40, 80 and 160 post-larvae cm-2, in experimental units (2-L) with static cultivation system and total water renewal at each 48 hours. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and three repetitions each. Stocking density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length within 24 days, while only 18% of the post-larvae at density of 80 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length in the same time. The density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 had the highest specific growth rate, 4.98±0.08% day-1. The survival rates of post-larvae at lower densities were significantly higher (53.24±4.60% and 52.95±3.32%, on 40 and 80 post-larvae cm-2, respectively) compared to higher stocking density (31.54±0.70%). In the cultivation of A. brasiliana post-larvae, stocking density must be managed during growth. The density of 160 post-larvae cm-2 can only be used until the post-larvae reach 600μm in length, then they should be at 40 post-larvae cm-2 density to keep the maximum daily growth rate.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the moment of the year for the oyster recruitment and define the type of collector and environmental conditions that maximize recruitment. Collections were conducted, during 12 months, on Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove at two different sites: raft (point I) and mangrove (point II). In each location three types of collectors were used (1) transparent PET bottles, (2) green PET bottles, and (3) PVC sheets, each with three replicates. Spats were counted and measured at 45-day intervals, while the environmental data were measured every two weeks. Identification of oyster species occurred by genetic testing (multiplex PCR) by randomly selecting individuals by sampling. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a remoção de compostos nitrogenados e fosfatados e da carga orgânica poluidora oriunda de cultivo heterotrófico de camarão marinho, por meio de reator anaeróbico. Foi construído um reator com fluxo ascendente, em que os efluentes de entrada e saída foram avaliados continuamente durante 120 horas, com três repetições. Os parâmetros físicos e químicos avaliados foram: temperatura, pH, condutividade, ortofosfato, nitrito, nitrato, amônia, demanda química de oxigênio e sólidos totais. O reator permaneceu estável, com boas condições de retenção de sólidos. O reator anaeróbico removeu 96,7% do nitrogênio amoniacal e 91% de ortofosfatos dos efluentes de cultivo de camarão marinho, o que mostra que os efluentes tratados estão dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela legislação.

Fluctuations in world harvests of Artemia sp cysts have increased prices sharply in the past years. Several organisms have been tested as alternative sources for a total or partial replacement of Artemia sp, among which the microcrustacean (Anostraca) Dendrocephalus brasiliensis stands out. The objective of this study was to investigate the reproductive strategy of D. brasiliensis by means of AFLP markers. The distinction between sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction was conducted using 7 EcoRI and MseI primer combinations in a full-sib family composed of 13 progenies. Forty polymorphic markers were obtained, of these, 35% were from paternal origin and 65% were maternally inherited. Results showed mendelian segregation in all markers through the chi-square at P≤0.05. Sex changes were observed after 72 hours of grouping individuals of the same sex in a container, suggesting a possible sex density-dependent behavior. Paternal inheritance revealed that this species adopts sexual reproduction under experimental conditions.Há vários anos que a produção de cistos de Artemia sp. apresenta flutuações, o que aumenta consideravelmente o seu valor. Vários organismos têm sido testados para a substituição total ou parcial da Artemia, dentre os quais se destaca o microcrustáceo (Anostraca) Dendrocephalus brasiliensis. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi investigar a estratégia reprodutiva de D. brasiliensis por meio de marcadores de AFLP. A distinção entre uma reprodução sexuada e partenogenética foi feita a partir da genotipagem de sete combinações de primers de AFLP em uma família composta de 13 progênies. Quarenta marcadores polimórficos foram obtidos, dos quais 35% foram de origem paterna e 65%, materna. Os resultados mostraram a segregação mendeliana de todos os marcadores através do teste de qui-quadrado a P≤0.05. Mudanças de sexo foram observadas após 72 horas do agrupamento de indivíduos de mesmo sexo em um recipiente, sugerindo uma possível razão sexual populacional densidade-dependente. A herança paterna mostrou que a reprodução sexual é adotada por essa espécie sob condições experimentais.

This work aimed at determining the dissolved oxygen consumption rate of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles maintained in a microbial biofloc raceway system at high density with no aeration. Three 4 L bottles were filled for each treatment, sealed hermetically, and placed in an enclosed greenhouse raceway system. Four shrimp (13.2±1.42 g) were assigned to two sets of the bottles, which underwent the following treatments: light conditions with no shrimp; dark conditions with no shrimp; light conditions with shrimp; and dark conditions with shrimp. Dissolved oxygen content was measured every 10 min for 30 min. A quadratic behavior was observed in dissolved oxygen concentration over time. Significant differences for oxigen consumption were observed only at 10 and 20 min between shrimp maintained in the dark and those under light conditions. At 10 min, a higher value was observed in shrimp maintained under light, and at 20 min, in the dark. Significant differences between 10 and 20 min and between 10 and 30 min were observed when oxygen consumption was analyzed over time in the presence of light. Under dark conditions there were significant differences only between 20 and 30 min. Lethal oxygen concentration (0.65 mg L-1) would be reached in less than one hour either under light or dark conditions with no aeration.O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o consumo de oxigênio dissolvido (OD) de juvenis de Litopenaeus vannamei mantidos em sistema de cultivo de bioflocs bacterianos em alta densidade e ausência de aeração. Três garrafas de 4 L foram preenchidas para cada tratamento, fechadas hermeticamente e colocadas em sistema de cultivo fechado. Quatro camarões (13,2±1,42 g) foram colocados em dois dos conjuntos de garrafas. Os tratamentos aplicados foram: luminosidade, sem camarões; escuro, sem camarões; luminosidade, com camarões; escuro, com camarões. A concentração de oxigênio dissolvido foi determinada a cada 10 min durante 30 min. Foi observado um comportamento quadrático na concentração de OD ao longo do tempo. Diferenças significativas para consumo de oxigênio foram observadas apenas aos 10 e 20 min entre camarões mantidos no escuro e camarões em luminosidade. Aos 10 min, foi observada maior concentração no sistema mantido em luminosidade e, aos 20 min, no sistema mantido no escuro. Na análise do consumo de oxigênio ao longo do tempo e com luminosidade, foram constatadas diferenças significativas entre 10 e 20 min e entre 10 e 30 min. Em condições de escuridão, houve diferença significativa apenas entre 20 e 30 min. Concluiu-se que, sem aeração, a condição anóxica pode ser alcançada em menos de uma hora, tanto ao dia quanto à noite.

Abstract Ceratium furcoides is an invasive species that has caused ecological imbalance in several reservoirs in Brazil. This study investigates the main factors that may favor the occurrence of Ceratium furcoides blooms in a tropical reservoir from the Northeast Brazil, during an extreme drought season. Samples containing phytoplankton were collected monthly from February to September 2017. Quantitative analysis of C. furcoides was performed and the cell volume was estimated using geometric formulas. Mean biovolume of C. furcoides showed significant differences, ranging from 0.78 mm3 L-1 to 11.29 mm3 L-1 reported in March and September, respectively. Environmental parameters presented low oscillation throughout the study, except the conductivity. Significant relationships among the C. furcoides biovolume, water temperature and soluble reactive phosphate were observed. The findings reported here suggest that adverse conditions caused by a drought season did not negatively affect this species.

Biosurfactants can be used in environmental pollution control systems for oil spill and its derivatives, since they increase the bioavailability of contaminants by reducing the surface tension of water. The mollusk Anomalocardia brasiliana is a species that inhabits areas with little suspended material. The aim was to test the tolerance concentration and the median lethal concentration (LC50) for a period of 96h through survival. The experiment was conducted at UFRPE, and the biosurfactant produced the root Candida lipolytica, having an industrial waste as a source of carbon, plus mineral medium. The animals were not fed for 24 hr prior to the experiment. It was performed six treatments (1:10, 1:20, 1:40, 1:80 and 1: 160) in three replicates, with the density of 2.5 individual / Litre and subjected to constant aeration at a temperature of 26 ± 0 5 ° C and salinity 26. It follows that the treatments 1 (1:10) and 2 (1:20) gave a survival 76.18%, however treatments 3 (95.23%) and 4 (95 83%) were higher and treating with 5 to 100%. The LC50 estimated for the biosurfactant tested was 0.222 or 1: 4.5. The compound is lethal to the test organism used in dilutions being suggested further experiments with dilutions from 1: 05 to 1:20, to better estimate of LC50 for the same species. Thus, a better understanding of the lethal concentration in organisms representing different trophic levels brings positive results to optimize the procedures in environmental monitoring in port areas.

Knowing the reproductive physiology of the prawn Macrobrachium acanthurus in relation to controlled factors, such as processed food and temperature variations, would help to develop culture techniques,assuring its survival. Aiming at the finding some data on this subject, females of M. acanthurus were submitted to the effect of three temperatures (20, 25 and 30oC) and three types of food (lipidic, proteic and commercial). Following this procedure, the effects of haemolymph glucose, total protein and total lipid levels on ovarian maturation as well as in the moulting stages wereanalyzed. Results showed that nutrient levels usually increased as the animals reached D stage and the temperature increased. The nutrient levels also increased as animals reached stage III of ovarian maturation. Glucose and total protein levels increased with increasing temperature, while total lipid levels diminished at 30oC.Lipid food produced an increase in the haemolymph glucose and total proteins, while lipid and commercial food produced an increase in total lipids. In spite of that, results showed no significant differences among moulting stages and ovarian maturation, when measured at the same temperature.

O metabissulfito de sódio é o conservante mais aplicado na carcinicultura, com uso amparado em legislações vigentes no país, todavia, seu resíduo, dióxido de enxofre (SO2), em concentrações altas, pode provocar reações adversas à saúde. Este estudo foidesenvolvido com a finalidade de observar a influência do aquecimento sob diferentes métodos de titulação de SO2 residual em camarões Litopenaeus vannamei. Os camarões foram submetidos a nove concentrações de metabissulfito de sódio e avaliados com diferentesmétodos de detecção de SO2. O método da titulação Adolfo Lutz adaptado apresentou grande sensibilidade para detecção de SO2 residual. O método da titulação iodométrica com aquecimento possibilitou a detecção de maiores níveis de SO2, quando comparado aométodo sem o aquecimento. O aquecimento interferiu negativamente no método da fita reativa. Conclui-se que o aquecimento influenciou positivamente a titulação iodométrica, não ocorrendo o mesmo com a fita reativa.Sodium metabisulfite is the most applied preservative in shrimp culture, with its use supported by current legislation; however, its residue, sulfur dioxide (SO2), in high concentrations can provoke adverse health reactions. This study evaluated the influence of heating under different methods of residual SO2 titration in Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimps were treated with nine concentrations of sodium metabisulfite and evaluated by different methods of SO2 titration. The adapted Adolfo Lutz titration method presented the highest sensitivity for the detection of SO2. The method of iodometric titration with heating made possible the detention ofhigher levels of SO2, when compared to the same method without heating. The heating influenced negatively on the reactive ribbon method. It is concluded that the heating influenced positively on the iodometric titration, as opposed to the reactive ribbon.
