Abstract

This article analyzes the characteristic materials of the rationalized construction systems typical of aridseismic zones in relation to the carbon dioxide emissions associated with them during their production, use and final disposal. For this, a multiobjective optimization matrix (MOM) is built that facilitates the early estimation, throughout its life cycle, of the CO2 emissions associated with the materialization and location of social housing in the arid-seismic zone. Its development involves the determination of the climate change indicator of each of the construction components, as well as the total incorporated energy and their thermal transmittance. With these values, the weighting of each of the construction components considered is made, based on the use of the hierarchical analytical process. In relation to the different case studies analyzed, it is concluded that the criteria that support the materialization of social housing disregard environmental parameters and hygrothermal comfort. So, the tool developed allows the users of these homes to be empowered, so that they can exercise their right to decent housing and a healthy, balanced and fit environment for human development.

Abstract

El objetivo del presente estudio fue indagar las prácticas de cuidado y de riesgo que se despliegan en escenarios nocturnos de presencia masiva de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Asimismo, se indagaron los motivos percibidos para el consumo de sustancias psicoactivas. Para ello se entrevistó a 16 jóvenes de entre 21 a 35 años de edad. Los datos fueron analizados siguiendo la propuesta de la teoría fundamentada y con el soporte del programa Atlas.Ti. Se analizaron prácticas individuales, prácticas grupales, y a nivel del entorno. Entre las prácticas de riesgo se mencionaron con frecuencia la disponibilidad de las sustancias, la ingesta excesiva y las mezclas. Respecto de las prácticas de cuidado, se destacó el valor del grupo al mantenerse todos juntos y brindar ayuda a sus miembros. Se discuten las implicancias prácticas de estos resultados, y se presentan las limitaciones y líneas futuras de investigación.

Abstract

Phytoremediation techniques have been proposed as ecological methods to clean up contaminated sites. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of the Streptomyces sp. Waksman & Henrici and Zea mays L. plant system on the dissipation of Cr(VI) and/or lindane from a co-contaminated soil, being 2 mg kg−1 of lindane and 150 mg kg−1 of chromium used. Lindane dissipation was improved in the presence of plant-microorganism association; however, Cr(VI) removal was higher when plants or the microorganism were separately. In co-contaminated systems, chromium content in plant tissues was lower than metal content in plants grown only with Cr(VI), suggesting that lindane could interfere with metal accumulation in the plant. The high malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration detected in non-inoculated plants grown with chromium could be consequence of high metal concentration in plant tissues. Interestingly, plants inoculated with Streptomyces sp. Z38 growing with Cr(VI) showed decrease in MDA concentration, indicating that the bacterium could activate defense mechanisms in the plant. Also, inoculated plants showed the highest value of superoxide dismutase activity. Lettuce plants used as bioindicators grew better in biologically treated soils compared with lettuce grown on non-treated soil. The results presented in this work provide the basis that will allow the optimization of future trials on a larger scale.

Abstract

Bioremediation using actinobacterium consortia proved to be a promising alternative for the purification of co-contaminated environments. In this sense, the quadruple consortium composed of Streptomyces sp. M7, MC1, A5, and Amycolatopsis tucumanensis AB0 has been able to remove significant levels of Cr(VI) and lindane from anthropogenically contaminated soils. However, the effectiveness of the bioremediation process could not be evaluated only by analytical monitoring, which is complex mainly due to the characteristics of the matrix, producing non-quantitative analyte recoveries, or interferences in the detection stage and quantification. However, the effectiveness of the bioremediation process cannot be evaluated only through analytical monitoring, which is complex due mainly to the characteristics of the matrix, to the recoveries of non-quantitative analytes or to interferences in the detection and quantification stage. For this reason, it is essential to have tools of ecological relevance to assess the biological impact of pollutants on the environment. In this context, the objective of this work was to establish the appropriate bioassays to evaluate the effectiveness of a bioremediation process of co-contaminated soils. For this, five model species were studied: four plant species (Lactuca sativa, Raphanus sativus, Lycopersicon esculentum, and Zea mays) and one animal species (Eisenia fetida). On plant species, the biomarkers evaluated were inhibition of germination (IG) and the length of hypocotyls/steam and radicles/roots of the seedling. While on E. fetida, mortality (M), weight lost, coelomocyte concentration and cell viability were tested. These bioindicators and the battery of biomarkers quantified in them showed a different level of sensitivity, from maximum to minimum: E. fetida > L. esculentum > L. sativa > R. sativus ≫> Z. mays. Therefore, E. fetida and L. esculentum and their respective biomarkers were selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the bioremediation process due to the capability of assessing the effect on the flora and the fauna of the soil, respectively. The joint application of these bioindicators in a field scale bioremediation process is a feasible tool to demonstrate the recovery of the quality and health of the soil. Fil: Aparicio, Juan Daniel. Abstract

Old Yellow Enzymes play key roles in several cellular processes and have become an important family of enzymes withbiotechnological potential. One of the major challenges of biotechnology consists of the bioremediation of co-polluted soilswith organic and inorganic compounds. In co-contaminated areas, chromium normally exists in its more toxic and carcinogenicform Cr(VI). Microorganisms can reduce this metal to the insoluble and less toxic Cr(III).Streptomycessp. M7 is a strain able toefficiently bioremediate polluted soils withγ-hexachlorocyclohexane and Cr(VI). The complete degradation pathway for γ-hexachlorocyclohexane was recently elucidated in this strain. In the present work, we confirmed the ability ofStreptomycessp.M7 to eliminate a high percentage of Cr(VI) from a synthetic culture medium. After a transcriptional study in the presence ofCr(VI), we also report the molecular cloning of a gene coding for an Old Yellow Enzyme with chromate reductase activity. Ourresults suggest that the elimination of Cr(VI) byStreptomycessp. M7 is directly related to the activity of this Old Yellow Enzyme.The importance of our work is in identifying for the first time an Old Yellow Enzyme with chromate reductase activity inStreptomycesand Actinobacteria. Finding this enzyme helps understand chromium homeostasis inStreptomycessp. M7, inaddition to opening a new research window related to Old Yellow Enzymes from Actinobacteria. Abstract

Actinobacteria exhibit cosmopolitan distribution since their members are widely distributed in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. In the environment they play relevant ecological roles including recycling of substances, degradation of complex polymers, and production of bioactive molecules. Biotechnological potential of actinobacteria in the environment was demonstrated by their ability to remove organic and inorganic pollutants. This ability is the reason why actinobacteria have received special attention as candidates for bioremediation, which has gained importance because of the widespread release of contaminants into the environment. Among organic contaminants, pesticides are widely used for pest control, although the negative impact of these chemicals in the environmental balance is increasingly becoming apparent. Similarly, the extensive application of heavy metals in industrial processes lead to highly contaminated areas worldwide. Several studies focused in the use of actinobacteria for cleaning up the environment were performed in the last 15 years. Strategies such as bioaugmentation, biostimulation, cell immobilization, production of biosurfactants, design of defined mixed cultures and the use of plant-microbe systems were developed to enhance the capabilities of actinobacteria in bioremediation. In this review, we compiled and discussed works focused in the study of different bioremediation strategies using actinobacteria and how they contributed to the improvement of the already existing strategies. In addition, we discuss the importance of omic studies to elucidate mechanisms and regulations that bacteria use to cope with pollutant toxicity, since they are still little known in actinobacteria. 7. Hipereosinofilia severa como síndrome paraneoplásico en un paciente con cáncer diferenciado de tiroides.

Abstract

En los tumores sólidos la hipereosinofilia es un fenómeno raro y se asocia principalmente con carcinomas secretores de mucina. Los tumores tiroideos asociados a neutrofilia y/o eosinofilia se han descrito exclusivamente en pacientes con cáncer anaplásico de tiroides. La eosinofilia asociada con cáncer papilar de tiroides es extremadamente rara y se encuentran muy pocos casos descriptos actualmente. Se ha sugerido que tres citocinas, a saber, la interleucina-3 (IL-3), la interleucina-5 (IL-5) y el factor estimulante de colonias de granulocitos y macrófagos (GM-CSF), pueden actuar como un péptido eosinofílico potencial. Hasta el momento solo se han reportado tres pacientes con cáncer diferenciado de tiroides asociados a eosinofilia, dos de tipo papilar y uno de tipo medular. Paciente de 48 años consultó en el año 2022 por adenopatías cervicales bilaterales de 3 años de evolución asociado a síndrome consuntivo e hipereosinofilia. Se solicitó PET CT que evidenció foco hipermetabólico en lóbulo tiroideo derecho y metástasis ganglionares, pulmonares, óseas y hepáticas; ecografía tiroidea que evidencia en lóbulo derecho nódulo de alta sospecha de malignidad y conglomerado de adenopatías con lavado de aguja positivo para tiroglobulina. Evaluada la hipereosinofilia con valores iniciales de leucocitosis de GB 30310/mm3 (10608/mm3 de eosinófilos) hasta valores máximos de GB 77090/mm3 (eosinófilos 20814/mm3) se interpretó como síndrome paraneoplásico y se inició corticoterapia en dosis inmunosupresoras sin respuesta. Nuestras observaciones presentadas en este artículo están en línea con la mayoría de los estudios que reflejan que la hipereosinofilia paraneoplásica se caracteriza por una enfermedad más avanzada y un mal pronóstico.

8. Indicadores de evaluación ambiental y género. Propuesta piloto para la vivienda social de zona árida: San Juan como caso de estudio

En respuesta a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible 5 y 11, se introduce y valora la Perspectiva de Género en el análisis ambiental de la Vivienda Social en Zona Árida. Para ello, se contextualiza y pondera a la situación físico-ambiental, económica y social argentina, la matriz de datos de una metodología de evaluación ambiental de reconocimiento internacional. La Matriz de Datos Contextualizada resultante es revisada conforme a las variables: Movilidad, Trabajo y Cuidado. A partir del uso del Proceso Analítico Jerárquico se pondera la matriz desarrollada. Finalmente, se construye un Indicador Ambiental (IA) y un Indicador Global de Género (IG). De su aplicación a 4 casos de estudio, ubicados en la ciudad de San Juan, se obtiene que la práctica constructiva habitual, con un IG de 26.78 puntos y un IA de 60.23, se encuentran por debajo del puntaje máximo posible en el orden del 34.22% y del 40% respectivamente.

Abstract

In the last few decades, highly toxic organic compounds like the organochlorine pesticide (OP) hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) have been released into the environment. All HCH isomers are acutely toxic to mammals. Although nowadays its use is restricted or completely banned in most countries, it continues posing serious environmental and health concerns. Since HCH toxicity is well known, it is imperative to develop methods to remove it from the environment. Bioremediation technologies, which use microorganisms and/or plants to degrade toxic contaminants, have become the focus of interest. Microorganisms play a significant role in the transformation and degradation of xenobiotic compounds. Many Gram-negative bacteria have been reported to have metabolic abilities to attack HCH. For instance, several Sphingomonas strains have been reported to degrade the pesticide. On the other hand, among Gram-positive microorganisms, actinobacteria have a great potential for biodegradation of organic and inorganic toxic compounds. This review compiles and updates the information available on bacterial removal of HCH, particularly by Streptomyces strains, a prolific genus of actinobacteria. A brief account on the persistence and deleterious effects of these pollutant chemical is also given.

REs supported 55 and 35% of lindane removal by Streptomyces sp. strains A5 and M7, respectively, corroborating the hypothesis that co-metabolism may be a plant/microbe interaction important to bioremediation. In addition, residual lindane concentration was more than half of the amount in MM supplemented with glucose compared to MM supplemented with REs, suggesting that exudates could be more appropriate carbon source to support aerobic dehalogenation of the pesticide. Lindane-degrading activity was detected in REs, which could explain 42% of lindane removal in REs-lindane assay, without microorganisms. Because Streptomyces sp. A5 showed maximum biomass and the highest pesticide removal in REs-lindane assay, it was found to be the most promising strain regarding their future application. These results showed that phytostimulation of OP-degrading actinobacteria by maize REs are therefore likely to be a successful strategy for the remediation of lindane-contaminated environments. Abstract

Introducción: el progreso en los tratamientos para el lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) resultó en una disminución de la mortalidad; sin embargo, la enfermedad cardiovascular y las complicaciones infecciosas aún son las principales causas de muerte. La evidencia apoya la participación del sistema inmunológico en la generación de la placa aterosclerótica, así como su conexión con las enfermedades autoinmunes. Objetivos: describir la frecuencia de eventos cardiovasculares (ECV) en el RELESSAR transversal (Registro de Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico de la Sociedad Argentina de Reumatología), así como sus principales factores de riesgo asociados. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo y transversal para el cual se tomaron los pacientes ingresados en el registro RELESSAR transversal. Se describieron las variables sociodemográficas y clínicas, las comorbilidades, score de actividad y daño. ECV se definió como la presencia de al menos una de las siguientes patologías: enfermedad arterial periférica, cardiopatía isquémica o accidente cerebrovascular. El evento clasificado para el análisis fue aquel posterior al diagnóstico del LES. Se conformaron dos grupos macheados por edad y sexo 1:2. Resultados: 1515 pacientes mayores de 18 años participaron del registro. Se describieron 80 pacientes con ECV (5,3%). En este análisis se incluyeron 240 pacientes conformando dos grupos. La edad media fue de 47,8 (14,4) y 47,6 (14,2) en el grupo con y sin ECV respectivamente. Los pacientes con ECV tuvieron mayor duración del LES en meses, mayor índice de Charlson, mayor SLICC (Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology), mayor frecuencia de manifestaciones neurológicas, síndrome antifosfolípido, hospitalizaciones y uso de ciclofosfamida. Abstract

Twelve Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains, isolated from larvae and soil samples in Argentina, were molecularly and phenotypically characterized and their insecticidal activities against Spodoptera frugiperda and Peridroma saucia were determined. One isolate—Bt RT—produced more than 93% mortality on first instar larvae of both species, which was higher than that produced by the reference strain Bt 4D1. Bt RT carried a different cry gene profile than Bt 4D1. Scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of bipyramidal and cuboidal crystals. Abstract

Plastic production has been increasing exponentially in the last 60 years, but plastic disposal is out of control, resulting in the pollution of all ecosystems on Earth. Finding alternative environmentally sustainable choices, such as biodegradation by insects and their associated gut microbiota, is crucial, however we have only begun to characterize these ecosystems. Some bacteria and one fungus have been previously identified in the gut of Greater Wax Moth larvae (Galleria mellonella L., Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) located mainly in the Northern hemisphere. The aim of this study was to describe changes in the gut microbiota associated with the consumption of polyethylene and polystyrene by the Greater Wax Moth in Argentina, considering both bacteria and fungi. Larvae were fed polyethylene, polystyrene and beeswax as control for 7 days. Next generation sequencing revealed changes in the bacterial gut microbiome of the wax moth larvae at the phyla and genus levels, with an increase in two Pseudomonas strains. The fungal communities showed no differences in composition between diets, only changing in relative abundance. This is the first report of both bacterial and fungal communities associated with a plastivore insect. The results are promising and call for more studies concerning a potential multi-kingdom synergy in the plastic biodegradation process.

En Chile, entre 1929 y 1931, fueron creadas diversas escuelas experimentales. Este artículo analiza cómo las ideas pedagógicas del movimiento de la Escuela Nueva fueron aplicadas en el sistema escolar chileno durante la dictadura de Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (1927-1931), específicamente, en la Escuela Experimental de Niñas de Santiago. Examinamos una decena de imágenes que forman parte del Fondo fotográfico de la antigua Escuela, además de otras fuentes documentales y hemerográficas. Analizamos tres dimensiones de la experiencia escolar: 1) organización y disposición del espacio educativo, 2) dinámicas de participación de las estudiantes, y 3) definiciones sobre el aprendizaje.

Antecedentes: En la adolescencia, se han encontrado múltiples diferencias en la forma en que los varones y las mujeres se perciben a sí mismos. Esto lleva a preguntarse por la forma en los y las adolescentes se perciben a sí mismos en el futuro, es decir, los posibles sí mismos (PSs) que pueden generar. Objetivo: Indagar las diferencias en función del sexo en los PSs de adolescentes de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA). Método: Participaron adolescentes (n = 392) de ambos sexos (mujeres = 54.9%) que asistían a escuelas secundarias de la CABA (edad M = 14.92; SD = 1.52). Los adolescentes respondieron un cuestionario de preguntas abiertas en el que se les pidió que realicen un listado de sus PSs cuando terminen el secundario. Se realizó un análisis de contenido temático de las respuestas y conteo de frecuencias. Se utilizaron pruebas de Ji cuadrado y U de Mann-Whitney para estudiar las diferencias por sexo en el contenido, diversidad y balance en los PSs. Resultados: Las cuatro categorías más mencionadas de PSs por varones y mujeres fueron el estudio, el trabajo, la profesión, el estilo de vida, y la familia y seres queridos. Sin embargo, existen diferencias en la proporción en que varones y mujeres generaron PSs en varios dominios. Por otro lado, las mujeres presentan mayor diversidad de PSs esperados y deseados que los varones. No se encontraron diferencias en el balance en los PSs. Conclusiones: se observa una coincidencia en los dominios de los PSs mencionados por los varones y las mujeres. Sin embargo, las mujeres tienen una mirada más amplia de sí mismas en el futuro y el dominio de la familia y los seres queridos sigue siendo más prevalente para ellas.

Introducción: mientras que el síndrome de pie diabético (SPD) se define como “una úlcera del pie y/o tobillo, asociado con neuropatía, isquemia e infección” (Organización Mundial de la Salud), se considera pie de riesgo a aquel con características que aumentan la probabilidad de desarrollar un SPD, presente en el 15% de diabéticos durante el curso de su enfermedad. Pinto et al. demostraron mayor prevalencia de factores de riesgo cardiovascular (FRCV), de marcadores subclínicos de enfermedad CV, eventos CV y cerebrovasculares previos y nuevos en pacientes con DM y complicaciones de pie (vs DM-pie sano).
