11. Late Quaternary changes in sediment sources in the Labrador Sea

Abstract

Quaternary sediment in the Labrador Sea was derived from many proglacial sources in Greenland and eastern Canada. Understanding the spatial and temporal changes in sediment provenance provides information on ice extent and sediment dispersal patterns. Variations in mineral composition of sediment from late Quaternary cores has been determined by a whole pattern of quantitative X-ray diffraction procedure. Mineral facies were extracted statistically by a supervised analysis of 90 samples from bedrock and ice-rafted clasts, which were then used to predict the most probable mineral facies in 1443 marine sediment samples. We used a non-parametric Classification Decision Tree (CDT) to validate that decision. Only 26% of the samples were misclassified in the CDT. The six facies identified consisted of four facies reflecting differences in the composition of Canadian and Greenland Precambrian igneous and metamorphic bedrock, a set of samples dominated by high weight percentages of calcite and dolomite (detrital carbonate (DC) and Hudson Strait Heinrich (HS-H) events), and a 'shale' facies. We isolated 284 sediments from the HS-H DC facies and determined that they could be divided into four categories based on differences in their mineral proportions. These categories vary geographically, based on non-carbonate sediment supply during these events from Greenland, the Canadian Shield, the Appalachians, and the outer continental shelf. In the Holocene of the Labrador Sea, dolomite is derived from Baffin Bay and abundance of calcite is influenced by both biogenic productivity and dissolution. Abstract

The very large global demand for energy storage as inherently-variable renewable-energy sources meet an increasing proportion of total electricity demand will be difficult to meet solely with existing technologies. Hence additional storage technologies that are safe and based on abundant primary resources are likely to come into play to facilitate the transition to zero net emissions at the global level. One such promising technology is the 'proton battery', which in its most general form is a rechargeable battery based on proton transfer and reversible electrochemical hydrogen storage. In the present review, a general definition of a proton battery is first proposed, since the term has been used broadly and somewhat inconsistently to date. The literature over the past thirty years on this technology is then critically reviewed, covering both proton batteries that meet the definition proposed in this paper as well as those that are merely self-identified. To the extent possible through published information, the performances of this range of cells are compared in terms of key parameters such as electrical energy stored per unit mass, cyclability, self-discharge and scale reached. The proton battery design developed by our group at RMIT is described in more detail, both theoretically and in terms of experimentally-measured performance, as an exemplar of a system that has already demonstrated a competitive storage capacity at a significant scale. In conclusion, potential future applications for proton batteries, and some directions for the research and development necessary to enable this potential to be realised, are proposed. Abstract

Background: Mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) is a rare ovarian cancer with limited evidence to support clinical care. Aims: We undertook a clinician survey to better understand current practice in treating MOC in Australia and New Zealand, and to determine any features associated with variation in care. In addition, we aimed to understand future research priorities. Methods: A RedCap survey was distributed to clinician members of the Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group (ANZGOG). Questions included respondent demographics, three case studies and future research priorities. Clinicians were asked questions specific to their speciality. Results: Respondents (n = 47) were commonly experienced gynae‐oncology specialists, most often surgical (38%) or medical (30%) oncologists. There was good consensus for surgical approaches for stage I disease; however, variation in practice was noted for advanced or recurrent MOC. Variation was also observed for medical oncologists; in early‐stage disease there was no clear consensus on whether to offer chemotherapy, or which regimen to recommend. For advanced and recurrent disease a wide range of chemotherapy options was considered, with a trend away from an ovarian‐type toward gastrointestinal (GI)‐type regimens in advanced MOC. This practice was reflected in future research priorities, with 'Is a GI chemotherapy regimen better than an ovarian regimen?' the most highly ranked option, followed by 'Should stage 1C patients receive chemotherapy?' Conclusions: Although the number of respondents limited the analyses, it was clear that chemotherapy selection was a key point of divergence for medical oncologists.
