Abstract Introduction The non-carious degradation of the dentin matrix is a natural process throughout life; however, when associated with the presence of excessive acidic substances, it leads to lesions in dental structures. Objective This study developed an experimental solution based on antioxidant polyphenols from the yellow passion fruit seed (Passiflora edulis) and assessed its preventive potential on eroded dentin. The experimental polyphenolic solution was obtained from passion fruit seeds through drying and cold pressing. Material and method Thirty samples of bovine cervical root dentin were acquired and randomized into three groups (n=10): G1 – distilled water; G2 – experimental solution of phenolic antioxidants from passion fruit; G3 – Commercial anti-erosion toothpaste. Erosive cycling and treatment were conducted over 3 days. Subsequently, non-contact 3D confocal microscopy was employed to measure volumetric (Sa) and linear (Ra) roughness, as well as erosive wear. A one-way ANOVA/Tukey test was performed (α=0.05). Result The G2 group had lower Ra and Sa values compared to the other groups and demonstrated the lowest erosive wear in µm compared to G1 and G3. Conclusion: The experimental solution based on antioxidant polyphenols from Passiflora edulis showed promising performance on eroded dentin in this investigation. Nevertheless, further research is required to establish its effectiveness and potential use in developing a new product.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of mechanized final irrigation protocols (XPE, XP-Endo Finisher; XPC, XP-Clean; and ECL, Easy Clean) compared to PUI (passive ultrasonic irrigation) on the debris incidence and open dentinal tubules, and their effects on the adhesion interface after 48 h and 6 months. One hundred twenty maxillary central incisors were submitted to chemical–mechanical preparation using a rotary instrument and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. Specimens were distributed in 4 groups (n = 30) in accordance with the mechanized final irrigation protocol: XPE, XPC, ECL, or PUI. Forty specimens (n = 10/group) were submitted to SEM analysis to evaluate the residue incidence and dentin open tubules. The other specimens were obturated using Bio-C Sealer and submitted to push-out bond strength and adhesive failure mode evaluations in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds after 48 h or 6 months (n = 10/group). Only in the apical third, ECL presented the highest residue incidence and fewer open dentinal tubules when compared to the XPE, XPC, and PUI groups (p < 0.05). In the cervical and middle root thirds, no significant differences were observed regardless of the group evaluated (p > 0.05). After 48 h, ECL resulted in the lowest bond strength only in the apical third (p < 0.05), while the XPE, XPC, and PUI groups remained similar in the cervical and middle thirds (p > 0.05). At 6 months, all groups showed lower bond strength values regardless of the root third evaluated, but ECL showed the lowest bond strength in the apical and middle root thirds when compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). The ECL protocol did not provide adequate residue removal on the apical radicular third and negatively affected the longevity of endodontic obturation using a calcium silicate-based sealer.

Background: The photo-acceleration of bleaching gels by lights has been extensively researched. However, the induced temperature increase during this process needs to be further evaluated to prevent damage to the dental pulp. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the surface and intrapulpal temperature kinetics of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) gels photo-accelerated by blue or violet light and infrared laser. Methods: The whitening gels at concentrations of HP35, HP15, and HP6 % were irradiated with blue and violet LED/laser on the surface of a human canine tooth. The surface temperature variation (∆Ts) was evaluated using a pH meter, while the intrapulpal temperature variation (∆Ti) was assessed using a digital thermometer at intervals of 1, 15, and 30 min. Statistical analysis was conducted using a Two-way repeated measures ANOVA test, and Bonferroni post-test was applied at a significance level of 5 %. Results: All violet LED photo-accelerated groups showed a higher increase in ∆Ts compared to the blue LED/laser groups. However, there were no significant differences between the groups for ∆Ti. Conclusion: Although the photo-acceleration of HP35 and HP15 % gels with violet LED/laser has a greater increase in surface temperature compared to HP6 % gel, the different light systems do not significantly increase the intrapulpal temperature.

ObjectiveThis clinical trial evaluated the effect of 1.5% potassium oxalate (PO) in controlling sensitivity and color change after at-home tooth whitening. It also evaluated the influence of PO on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the degree of patient satisfaction after bleaching treatment.Materials and methodsFifty volunteers were randomized into two groups (n = 25): At-home bleaching gel with 22% carbamide peroxide for 45 min + placebo gel (GP) or 1.5% PO (GPO) for 10 min. The intensity of tooth sensitivity was assessed daily through the visual analog scale. The color analysis was performed three times: baseline, 21 days, and 1 month after the last application of the whitening gel. The impact of the oral condition on the patient's quality of life (OIDP) was used to measure the impact caused by the whitening treatment in relation to the individuals' ability to carry out their daily activities and its influence on HRQOL.ResultsNo difference in tooth sensitivity was observed (p > 0.05). In addition, there was no difference in color change between groups (p > 0.05). However, there was an intragroup statistical difference throughout the evaluation period (p 0.05) and there was no difference between the groups regarding the degree of satisfaction with the bleaching (p > 0.05).ConclusionsThe 1.5% PO was effective in preventing sensitivity and did not interfere with tooth whitening. Desensitizing therapy had a positive impact on quality of life and patient satisfaction.

Introduction: Home bleaching is a popular cosmetic technique that delivers quick results, reduces chair time, and has a lower risk of side effects compared to office bleaching. Aim: To evaluate the effect of nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) and arginine on Bleach-Sensitive Teeth (BST) and colour change after at-home bleaching treatment across three months of follow-up. Materials and Methods: Sixty subjects were randomly allocated into one of three groups (n=20): 1) CONTROL, treated with 22% carbamide peroxide (CP)+toothpaste without a desensitising agent; 2) NANO, treated with CP +n-HAP; and 3) ARGININE, treated with CP + arginine. An air jet was used to evaluate BST associated with a modified Visual Analog Scale (VAS). A spectrophotometer was used to measure the colour of the maxillary incisors. Results: The Friedman vs Kruskal-Wallis tests showed that the BST reported in the experimental groups was lower when compared with the control group one day after the end of treatment (p≤0.05). However, no significant difference was observed at 30, 60 or 90 days of evaluation (p>0.05). ANOVA showed no significant difference between groups when comparing mean ∆E (p>0.05). Conclusion: The subjects treated with n-HAP and arginine presented lower sensitivity when compared to the control group one day after the end of treatment. In addition, there was no impairment of the efficacy of the at-home bleaching treatment over the 90-day evaluation period.

Background. Propolis is a natural bee product that has garnered attention due to its harmlessness and numerous beneficial biological properties. This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of toothpastes containing different concentrations of propolis (10% and 15%) on the control of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Methods. From adults aged 18–40 years with DH, 66 teeth were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups as follows (n = 22): control (toothpaste without active ingredient), 10% propolis toothpaste, and 15% propolis toothpaste. DH was assessed thrice (baseline and 15 and 30 days after treatment) by tactile and evaporative stimuli using the visual analog scale. Data were analyzed using Friedman and Kruskal–Wallis tests. A significance level of 5% was used in all analyses. Results. All the groups showed a reduction in DH during the study (p0.05). Conclusion. Toothpastes containing propolis at concentrations of 10% and 15% were equally effective in controlling DH, regardless of their concentration. Trial Registration. ObjectiveThis split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial assessed the effect of 10% strontium chloride in combination with photobiomodulation (PBM) for the control of tooth sensitivity (TS) post-bleaching.MethodsThe upper/lower, right and left quadrants of fifty volunteers were randomized and allocated to four groups (n = 25): PLACEBO-placebo gel + simulation of PBM; Placebo + PBM; STRONTIUM-10% strontium chloride + simulation of PBM; and PBM + STRONTIUM-10% strontium chloride + PBM. All groups received tooth bleaching treatment with 35% hydrogen peroxide. For the PBM treatment, the laser tip was positioned in the apical and cervical regions of the teeth bleached in the respective hemi-arch. The laser system was operated in continuous mode, using 1.7 J of energy. A dose of 60 J/cm2 was applied to each point for 16 seconds under 808 nm near-infrared light (100mW of power), with a point area of 0.028 cm2. TS was assessed during a 21-day follow-up, using the modified visual analogue scale.ResultsIn the intragroup assessment, the Friedman test indicated that PBM + STRONTIUM promoted the greatest reduction in TS after the second week of treatment (p ≤ 0.05). The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test indicated that the groups Placebo + PBM, STRONTIUM, and STRONTIUM + PBM did not differ statistically (p ≥ 0.05) in the first and third weeks of treatment The group PLACEBO exhibited the greatest TS in the first three days after each bleaching session.ConclusionThe combination of 10% strontium chloride with PBM was effective in reducing post-bleaching TS; however, the combination of 10% strontium chloride with PBM was effective in reducing post-bleaching TS; however, it did not differ from the individual use of Placebo + PBM or STRONTIUM groups assessed after 21 days of follow-up.
