This study examined the agreement between the Ages & Stages Questionnaires, third edition (ASQ-3), and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional, second edition (ASQ:SE-2), and investigated the relationship of the overall indication of "parental concerns" about their child's behavior on the ASQ-3 and the results of the ASQ:SE-2. A large and U.S. representative sample of 16,739 birth to 6 years old children was used to calculate agreements (1) between the ASQ-3 and the ASQ:SE-2, as well as (2) between the indication of "parental concerns" about their child's behavior on the ASQ-3 and the results from the child's ASQ:SE-2. Findings indicated .80 agreement between "typical" classifications on the ASQ-3 and the ASQ: SE-2; as well as .57 agreement on the "at-risk" status. When parents indicated a "behavioral concern" about their child on the ASQ-3 overall questions, 74% of these children were identified by a subsequent ASQ:SE-2. High agreement on the "at-risk" status between developmental and social-emotional screening tests was found. High agreement between parental concerns about child's behavior and results of the social-emotional screening test was found. This finding adds to the foundations of research on the importance of parental input in the early identification processes and can inform efforts to increase the efficiency of the screening process. Introduction: The teaching of socio-emotional skills has received greater attention, with ongoing theoretical discussions about these competences. Evaluating such characteristics and their development, however, is challenging because of a lack of consensus about theoretical and practical models, the difficulty in analyses that rely solely on self-reports, and the scarcity of robust Brazilian psychometric instruments. Objectives: Therefore, the present study sought to (1) verify the psychometric evidence of the instrument’s internal consistency in assessing socio-emotional skills, (2) identify differences in respondents’ answers, and (3) identify potential issues with questionnaire items via semi-structured interviews. Methods: This pilot study involved 32 responses from children and adolescents and 25 responses from their family members. The questionnaire assessed five socio-emotional skills: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, and responsible decision making. Descriptive analyses and Cronbach’s alpha calculations were applied to confirm internal consistency of the items in each subscale. Analyses of variance were also conducted to analyse responses from family members and children. Results: The results showed that self- awareness (α = 0.83, α = 0.76), self-management (α = 0.82, α = 0.79), and relationship skills (α = 0.71, α = 0.79) had adequate internal consistency in both children’s and family members’ versions. Significant results were observed in scores between family members and children/adolescents in selfawareness (p = 0.0159), self-management (p = 0.015). Conclusion: The present study underscores the importance and complexity of assessing responsible decisionmaking skills and suggests that the questionnaire can be useful for evaluating socio-emotional competencies. The objectives of this study were to assess the psychometric properties of the Coach-created Empowering and Disempowering Motivational Climate Questionnaire (EDMCQ-C) by testing four different hypotheses. A procedure of translation and adaptation of the instrument between different languages and cultures was carried out. A total of 350 national level Brazilian athletes (aged between 15 and 17 years; mean = 17.0, SD = 1.7) completed the questionnaire. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Exploratory Structural Equation Modelling (ESEM) were performed. Consistent with previous work on the EDMCQ-C, all solutions failed to achieve suitable levels of fit for a hierarchical model represented by five climate dimensions (autonomy-supportive, controlling, task-involving, ego-involving, and socially-supportive) and two global dimensions (empowering and disempowering). The 2-ESEM solution provided a satisfactory fit for the first-order model with two global factors supported. The 2-ESEM version of the questionnaire showed adequate predictive and discriminant validity, good internal consistency, and invariance across gender. Such results suggest that the EDMCQ-C is a promising scale to assess Brazilian athletes' perception of the over-arching empowering and disempowering features of the coach-created motivational climate. Neuropsychological alterations are characterized, mainly, by compromising functions such as memory, attention, executive functions, visual-spatial and linguistic abilities, acquired or congenital. The present study examines the internal structure and indicators of sensitivity and specificity of the Neuropsic-R scale. A total of 790 patients participated in this study, of which 432 (55%) were healthy (control group) and 358 (45%) with probable neuropsychological and neurological impairment (clinical group), from different Brazilian regions. In an exploratory analysis, 1 factor was removed, with factory loads between 0.312 and 0.93. The results of the confirmatory analysis revealed that the one-factor model for 19 items had the best fit (RMSEA = 0.044; CFI = 0.957; TLI = 0.953) and the general internal consistency index of the model was 0.93 (Cronbach's alpha). Sensitivity and specificity, calculated based on the ROC curve, revealed a minimum score of 43 points for the identification of neuropsychological alterations (minimum values of 19 and maximum of 76 points), which distinguishes a presumably sick population from a healthy one. For patients with suspected cognitive decline and dementia, the cutoff point is shifted to 47. Thus, the Neuropsic-R scale has good, fast, and reliable applicability in different contexts, especially for clinical and research purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quarantine and social distance restrictions have been enforced worldwide to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). The effects of these measures on mental health are recognised, but remaining unclear, is whether these effects are a consequence of the virus itself or policies that are enforced to prevent it. The present study investigated the impact of lockdown restrictions on anxiety and depression at two different times in 2020. Data were collected from 118 participants from all regions of Brazil. After easing quarantine restrictions in the second half of 2020, two natural groups were formed. One group included participants who voluntarily remained at home (n = 73). The other group consisted of those who decided to leave home (n = 45). A linear mixed model was used to determine the effects of group and time and their interaction. The McNemar test was used to determine intragroup differences in perceptions and concerns about COVID‐19. Logistic regression identified predictors of high and stable depression and anxiety. None of the factors or their interactions was significant. Indicators of depression and anxiety remained stable over time, regardless of whether the participants left home or remained at home. Significantly, a strong and stable agreement with quarantine was found. The participants agreed that COVID‐19 was a threat to public health. Political orientation was a predictor of high and stable levels of depression but not anxiety. Participants who self‐identified as liberal politically were at a greater risk of developing depression. The results suggest that the lockdown policy did not contribute to disruptions of mental health, which instead was a consequence of the pandemic and virus itself. In China, more than 90% of individuals in need are not receiving mental health services, partially because of the scarcity of valid and reliable developmental tools. This project aimed to adapt and validate a parent-completed screening tool, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2), to fill in this gap. First, a national representative sample of 2,830 children was accessed to establish cutoff scores. Results from a confirmatory multidimensionality item response theory analysis supported a two-factor structure with this sample. Evidence for item response theory reliabilities and internal consistency were also examined. The second study compared the Chinese ASQ:SE-2 with three convergent measures in a regional sample. Chinese ASQ:SE-2 total scores significantly correlated with most of the domain and total scores on the convergent measures. The classification agreement achieved a maximum of 85%. This project supports the use of the ASQ:SE-2 in the Chinese population, enhancing its clinical utility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background  A wide range of exploratory methods is available in psychometrics as means of gathering insight on existing data and on the process of establishing the number and nature of an internal structure factor of a test. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and principal component analysis (PCA) remain well-established techniques despite their different theoretical perspectives. Network analysis (NA) has recently gained popularity together with such algorithms as the Next Eigenvalue Sufficiency Test. These analyses link statistics and psychology, but their results tend to vary, leading to an open methodological debate on statistical assumptions of psychometric analyses and the extent to which results that are generated with these analyses align with the theoretical basis that underlies an instrument. The current study uses a previously published data set from the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional to explore, show, and discuss several exploratory analyses of its internal structure. To a lesser degree, this study furthers the ongoing debate on the interface between theoretical and methodological perspectives in psychometrics. Methods  From a sample of 22,331 sixty-month-old children, 500 participants were randomly selected. Pearson and polychoric correlation matrices were compared and used as inputs in the psychometric analyses. The number of factors was determined via well-known rules of thumb, including the parallel analysis and the Hull method. Multidimensional solutions were rotated via oblique methods. R and Factor software were used, the codes for which are publicly available at https://luisfca.shinyapps.io/psychometrics%5fasq%5fse/. Results  Solutions from one to eight dimensions were suggested. Polychoric correlation overcame Pearson correlation, but nonconvergence issues were detected. The Hull method achieved a unidimensional structure. PCA and EFA achieved similar results. Conversely, six clusters were suggested via NA. Conclusion  The statistical outcomes for determining the factor structure of an assessment diverged, varying from one to eight domains, which allowed for different interpretations of the results. Background: Memory and in turn, memory of pain is a reconstructive process. This study considers the relationship between time, memory, affective states, and pain induced by running a marathon by investigating the influence of these factors on a participant's memory of pain experienced after a marathon. The following two hypotheses were formulated: 1) participants' recalled-pain of marathon experience is underestimated; and 2) the underestimation of recalled pain would be greater for participants experiencing higher positive affect. Methods: A longitudinal design was employed to check pain intensities of marathon participants a) at the finish line and b) 6 months following its completion. The sample size was based on a power analysis, and 108 marathonists rated their pain intensities and positive and negative affects at the finish line. From this sample, 58 participants recalled their pain experience of running the marathon 6 months later. Linear models, including computer-based data-mining algorithms, were used. Results: The experienced pain was higher than their recalled pain (t(55) = 3.412, p < 0.01, d = 0.45), supporting the first hypothesis. The memory of pain faded similarly in all participants, which did not directly support the second hypothesis. Further exploratory analysis suggested that negative and positive affective states were related to participants' pain memory; positive affective states appeared to be inversely related to the recall (β = − 0.289, p = 0.039). Discussion: This study shows that time has a significant effect on memory recall and that emotions may also influence the memory of pain. This is the first study that preliminarily showcased the effect of positive affective states on the memory of pain induced by physical exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A scarcity of studies on the role of resilience resources (RRs) and vulnerability risk (VR) in children and adolescents with primary headache hampers the development of a risk‐resilience model for pediatric headaches. Objective: To examine the extent to which headache frequency and diagnosis are associated with RRs and VR and explore possible predictors of low RRs and high VR in a cross‐sectional population‐based study in adolescents. Methods: This is a cross‐sectional population study conducted in a small city in Brazil (Delfinópolis). Consents and analyzable data were obtained from 339/378 adolescents (89.7%). RRs and VR were assessed using the validated Brazilian version of the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents, completed by the adolescents. Parents filled a structured questionnaire assessing sociodemographic and headache characteristics, as well as the Brazilian‐validated version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire added to the impact supplement to evaluate the adolescent's psychosocial adjustment skills. Teachers completed a structured questionnaire about the students' school performance. Results: A higher frequency of headache was associated with lower RRs (F3,335 = 2.99, p = 0.031) and higher VR (F3,335 = 4.05, p = 0.007). Headache diagnosis did not significantly influence the risk of having lower RRs or higher VR. In the exploratory analyses, females (OR 3.07; 95% CI: 1.16–9.3) and individuals with psychosocial adjustment problems (OR 7.5; 95% CI: 2.51–22.4) were predictors of low RRs, and prenatal exposure to tobacco (OR 5.6; 95% CI: 1.57–20.9) was a predictor of high VR in adolescents with primary headache. Conclusions: The risk of low RRs and high VR was associated with a higher headache frequency, but not with headache diagnosis. These findings may contribute to the development of a risk‐resilience model of headaches in the pediatric population and help identify novel targets and develop effective resources for successful interventions. Neuropsychological assessments are often carried out due to mnemonic conditions. In this regard, short-term visual memory (STVM) is a type of memory that involves the temporary storage of visual information. Its evaluation has important clinical utility. The present study aimed to report evidence of the validity of the interpretation of the results obtained by a psychometric standardized test (MEMORE), especially developed to evaluate STVM in the context of clinical neuropsychology and psychological evaluation in general. From a sample composed of 1793 individuals located in the south, southeast and northeast of Brazil, 53.9% (n = 778) women, mean age 26.6 years (SD = 9.9), Psychometric results stated the reliability of the measure (Cronbach's alpha = 0.76; Composite reliability = 0.78, correlation between total value obtained between both applications = 0.81), a sufficiently unidimensional structure (X2(252) = 1255.530, p < 0.01, RMSEA = 0.048 [BC Bootstrap 95% CI = 0.046-0.0484], GFI = 0.860 [BC Bootstrap 95% CI = 0.859 - 0.870], MIREAL = 0.287 [BC Bootstrap 95% CI = 0.259 - 0.299]), and a metric invariance between men and women (2 (24) = 29,677, p = 0.196). No significant difference in performance as a function of gender was found, but a significant interaction between education and age group (F(8,1419) = 2.49, p = 0.01, p = 0.01). It is possible to conclude the psychometric adequacy of MEMORE and provide further evidence to consolidate the association between cognitive measures and sociodemographic effects on memory performance. Screening tools in health and education provide quick indicators that anticipate diagnostic evaluation and treatment. Faced with the socio-emotional competences of children, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE) was used in the population of children enrolled in public pre-schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro during 2011. The objective of this work was to investigate aspects of its validity and reliability. Data from 23,334 children (50.6% boys) being an average age of 5 years old (SD: 3 months) and enrolled in 625 pre-schools were analyzed. After an intensive data analysis, the Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the results were favorable to the multidimensional model with a social and emotional dimension: 2 (463) = 46363.495, p <0.001; RMSEA = 0.067; CFI = 0.918; TLI = 0.913. Reliability indicators were adequate. The results confirmed validity aspects of the ASQ:SE, thereby verifying its use for children aged 5 years old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In Brazil, large‐scale governmental programmes have been implemented to evaluate the development of all children who are enrolled in public daycare centres and preschools using the Brazilian Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social–Emotional (ASQ:SE) as a screening tool. However, in the Brazilian context, there is a lack of studies that have investigated the clinical utility of the ASQ:SE, and only a few studies have partially investigated the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of this scale. Objectives: The present study had two aims: (a) to develop reference norms for the ASQ:SE to help professionals screen child development and because the psychometric properties of the ASQ:SE have only been partially examined, (b) to confirm its factorial structure within a multidimensional item response theory framework. Methods: The sample size was 54,570 children (53% males, 1–5 years old) who were enrolled in Brazilian public daycare centres and preschools and assessed in 2011. The results allowed the development of reference norms for all age intervals by considering raw scores at the 95th percentile as "monitoring zone" and scores at the 99th percentile as "refer child for further evaluation." Samejima's graded response model was employed, and its fit was checked by the root mean squared error of approximation. Results: The results were ≤0.08, indicating sufficient fit for the two‐factor structure. The raw results were 70 and 99.75 (12 months), 75 and 100 (18 months), 70 and 100 (24 months), 85 and 120 (30 months), 90 and 130 (36 months), 95 and 135 (48 months), and 110 and 150 (60 months) for monitoring zone and to refer the child for further evaluation. Discussion Early identification is the initial stage in this early identification process, thus allowing for referral or intervention. This study may help identify children with developmental delays. Context: Early detection of developmental problems is critical, and interventions are more effective when they are carried out early in a child's life. In Macedonia, there are only four centers providing early intervention services. Aims: In this research, we determined the reliability of the translation and adaptation of Ages and Stages Questionnaires 3rd edition (ASQ-3-M) for assessment of children aged 3–5 years old in Macedonia, and reported preliminary results of the gender differences in the development. Materials and Methods: ASQ-3-M was completed by 165 parents and 40 educators in seven kindergarten classrooms. Children were 3–5 years old. Statistical Analysis Used: Cronbach's alpha, Intraclass Correlation coefficient (ICC), and interrater reliability (IRR) were used to assess ASQ-3-M psychometric properties. The Bayesian t-test was performed to estimate the difference in means between males and females. Results: The Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.65 to 0.87. The overall ICC was 0.89 (ranged from 0.8 to 0.95), which indicates a strong to almost perfect strength of agreement between test-retest. IRR correlation revealed an average of 0.88 (ranged from 0.74 to 0.95), suggesting that ASQ-3-M is reliable and stable. Conclusions: The results from the comparison between males and females on all dimensions of ASQ-3-M were not statistically significant (BF10 <3), indicating no significant gender difference. That said, the ASQ-3 is recommended for routine use in screening children aged 3–5 years old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This conceptual study aims to narrate and describe the definitions of psychology facing theoretical and operational aspects. Based on the current scenario where there are disparate considerations on the concept of psychological science and the definition of human behavior, this paper will address to solve this condition regarding four different ways: academia, literature, free market and Neuropsychology. Then, Neuropsychology is presented as a way to resolve this ambiguous situation. Finally, this study claims that the criterion that should be used to evaluate if a particular area of knowledge, or a discipline, is part of psychological science lies in evidences, but never in rhetorical or imagery appeal.
