1. Chilean English Language Teachers Transforming Their Beliefs and Practices through Reflection

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to show how the beliefs and teaching practices around listening comprehension of four Chilean English-as-a-foreign-language teachers were transformed after attending an eight-session reflective workshop. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and video-recorded and audio-recorded sessions. Information was analyzed using content analysis. Results evidenced that reflective practice positively affects the changes in beliefs and teaching practices in different ways. Conclusions show that this reframing is especially favored if certain factors (personal, professional development, and contextual) are given.

Abstract

One hundred years after the publication of History and Class Consciousness, it is imperative to revisit the classic work of Georg Lukács to discuss the relevance of his ideas in a world where the capitalist mode of production does not cease to show its devastating effects. To do so, we divide the article into two sections. In the first part, we place Lukács’ work in dialogue with that of Hegel and Marx in order to clarify the status of violence as an ontological condition of history, allowing us to determine the theoretical-practical framework from which social revolution can be conceptualized. In the second section, we analyze Lukács’ notion of class consciousness not as a historical fatality but as an act of self-determination of the proletariat. We compare this proposal with the current situation of gentrification of the proletariat which, far from invalidating the Hungarian author’s proposal, constitutes its reversal and the platform for its actualization. Ultimately, it is about the proletarian still today taking control and becoming, through class consciousness, the subject-object of history. We conclude by reinterpreting Lukács’ terms in a practice that counters a reactionary position in order to combat both the reactionary movements and the hedonistic immobilism of the proletariat.

Abstract

Abstract Background Stereotactic radiotherapy is the preferred treatment for managing patients with fewer than five brain metastases (BMs). However, some lesions recur after irradiation. The purpose of this study was to identify patients who are at a higher risk of failure, which can help in adjusting treatments and preventing recurrence. Methods In this retrospective multicenter study, we analyzed the predictive significance of a set of interpretable morphological features derived from contrast-enhanced (CE) T1-weighted MR images as imaging biomarkers using Kaplan–Meier analysis. The feature sets studied included the total and necrotic volumes, the surface regularity and the CE rim width. Additionally, we evaluated other nonmorphological variables and performed multivariate Cox analysis. Results A total of 183 lesions in 128 patients were included (median age 61 [31–95], 64 men and 64 women) treated with stereotactic radiotherapy (57% single fraction, 43% fractionated radiotherapy). None of the studied variables measured at diagnosis were found to have prognostic value. However, the total and necrotic volumes and the CE rim width measured at the first follow-up after treatment and the change in volume due to irradiation can be used as imaging biomarkers for recurrence. Abstract

ABSTRACT: By CO2 Capture and Utilization technologies (CCU), organic compounds can be produced industrially in a sustainable manner, generating an economic benefit that offsets the cost of CO2 capture. In this context, the use of CO2 chemisorbed by amines to generate chemicals is an attractive alternative, given that large-scale facilities using absorption to capture CO2 are already operational. The aim of this work is to convert CO2 captured in aqueous amines, specifically 3-amino-1-propanol (AP) and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), to produce formate, using either Zn, Al or gaseous H2 as reductants and Pd/C as catalyst. The highest yield of formate (68 %) was achieved with AP (125 °C, 75 bar, 120 min) using gaseous hydrogen as reductant. Using metals as reductants, reaction yields were lower, with a 12 % yield at 200 °C as the best result. After reduction, NMR analyses show that the amines did not suffer degradation, raising the possibility of reusing them for CO2 capture in a continuous process. These results indicate that CO2-loaded amines reduction is a promising CCU technology that can be integrated with the current technologies for gas treatment.

BackgroundMetabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, formerly NAFLD), emerges as major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with chronic patients facing increased risk. Guidelines on MASLD management in primary care (PC) are limited. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a clinical care pathway for use in PC to improve MASLD screening and management, including early detection, communication and treatment, in three European countries (Greece, Spain, the Netherlands).MethodsAn international multidisciplinary panel of experts oversaw pathway development, which was designed as a two-step algorithm with defined and sequenced tasks. To evaluate algorithm implementation, a controlled pilot study was conducted. Patients at risk of MASLD were assigned to general practitioners (GPs) trained in algorithm implementation (active group) or usual care (control group) and followed for 4–8 weeks. Abstract

Abstract Mutations in the microtubule-associated motor protein KIF1A lead to severe neurological conditions known as KIF1A-associated neurological disorders (KAND). Despite insights into its molecular mechanism, high-resolution structures of KIF1A-microtubule complexes remain undefined. Here, we present 2.7-3.5 Å resolution structures of dimeric microtubule-bound KIF1A, including the pathogenic P305L mutant, across various nucleotide states. Our structures reveal that KIF1A binds microtubules in one- and two-heads-bound configurations, with both heads exhibiting distinct conformations with tight inter-head connection. Notably, KIF1A’s class-specific loop 12 (K-loop) forms electrostatic interactions with the C-terminal tails of both α- and β-tubulin. The P305L mutation does not disrupt these interactions but alters loop-12’s conformation, impairing strong microtubule-binding. Structure-function analysis reveals the K-loop and head-head coordination as major determinants of KIF1A’s superprocessive motility. Our findings advance the understanding of KIF1A’s molecular mechanism and provide a basis for developing structure-guided therapeutics against KAND.

Here we present a taxonomic treatment for the Brazilian species of Syrbatus (Reitter, 1882), including the description of three new species (Syrbatus moustache Asenjo & Valois sp. nov., Syrbatus obsidian Asenjo & Valois sp. nov. and Syrbatus superciliata Asenjo & Valois sp. nov.) from the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Minas Gerais, Brazil). In addition, we designated lectotypes for the Brazilian species of species-group 2, Syrbatus centralis (Raffray, 1898), Syrbatus hetschkoi (Reitter, 1888), Syrbatus hiatusus (Reitter, 1888), Syrbatus transversalis (Raffray, 1898), and Syrbatus trinodulus (Schaufuss, 1887), besides recognizing the holotype for Syrbatus brevispinus (Reitter, 1882), Syrbatus bubalus (Raffray, 1898), and Syrbatus grouvellei (Raffray, 1898). The mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of the three new species are presented, for which we present the phylogenetic placement among Staphylinidae with previously published data.

Abstract Background Many advantages of hospital at home (HaH), as a modality of acute care, have been highlighted, but controversies exist regarding the cost-benefit trade-offs. The objective is to assess health outcomes and analytical costs of hospital avoidance (HaH-HA) in a consolidated service with over ten years of delivery of HaH in Barcelona (Spain). Methods A retrospective cost-consequence analysis of all first episodes of HaH-HA, directly admitted from the emergency room (ER) in 2017–2018, was carried out with a health system perspective. HaH-HA was compared with a propensity-score-matched group of contemporary patients admitted to conventional hospitalization (Controls). Mortality, re-admissions, ER visits, and direct healthcare costs were evaluated. Results HaH-HA and Controls (n = 441 each) were comparable in terms of age (73 [SD16] vs. 74 [SD16]), gender (male, 57% vs. 59%), multimorbidity, healthcare expenditure during the previous year, case mix index of the acute episode, and main diagnosis at discharge. Abstract

Abstract Background Depression and anxiety are two of the most prevalent and disabling mental disorders worldwide, both in the general population and in outpatient clinical settings. Objective This study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) based on network analysis metrics. Methods A total of 911 Paraguayans (23.71% women and 76.29% men; mean age 31.25 years, SD = 10.63), selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling, participated in the study. Network analysis was used to evaluate the internal structure, reliability, and measurement invariance between men and women. Results The results revealed that the PHQ-4 is a unidimensional measure through Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA). Reliability, through structural consistency, identified that 100% of the time, only a single dimension was obtained, and all items remained stable, as they were always replicated within the empirical dimension. The unidimensional structure has shown evidence of configural invariance; therefore, the network structure functioned equally among the different sex groups. Conclusion The PHQ-4 presented optimal preliminary evidence of validity based on its internal structure, reliability, and invariance between sexes. Therefore, it may be useful as an accurate and brief measure of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the Paraguayan context.

Abstract

Microorganisms are a valuable source of pharmaceutically active chemicals, serving as scaffolds for synthesis as well as lead structures. Investigating novel biomes frequently yields intriguing chemistry; the Atacama Desert in Chile is one such example. This study reports the isolation of a new reduced anthracycline-related compound from the Atacama Desert-derived bacterium Saccharothrix S26. Structural characterisation was achieved by one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR, HR-LCMS, and X-ray crystallography. The compound was tested against the ESKAPE pathogens, bovine mastitis-related pathogens, and the fungal strain Cryptococcus neoformans, but no antimicrobial activity was observed.

Abstract

In the light of some recent criticisms, this text seeks to promote a debate that takes place on two fronts: on the one hand, the logic of the origin of logic and, on the other hand, the relationship between psychoanalysis and Marxism. To this end, some texts published by Alain Badiou towards the end of the 1960s, in which he polemicizes with Jacques-Alain Miller around the concepts of "suture" and "subject" (Zizek), are recovered in order to situate both the different positions and the coherent reconsiderations throughout his intellectual trajectory. Indeed, from "The Concept of the Model" to his most recent trilogy (Theory of the Subject, Being and the Event and Logic of Worlds), a perspective is proposed that, far from establishing hierarchies and subordinations, seeks to promote connections based on specificities and differences through that particular path that is philosophy. In this way it is possible to appreciate that, despite his critique of the primacy of the logic of the signifier, the concepts proposed by Jacques Lacan functioned as a notorious source of inspiration for Badiou, especially in relation to the subject of the unconscious.

Abstract

Introduction: The presence of fear of an infectious disease triggers psychological factors associated with perceived behavioral control over vaccination acceptance, subjective norms of vaccination acceptance, attitudes toward vaccination acceptance, and perceived infectiousness from disease. Objective: The study evaluated how symptoms of fear of Monkeypox specifically relate to intention to be vaccinated against Monkeypox in a sample of 506 Peruvian individuals with a mean age of 27.11 years (SD = 9.77). Methods: Participants responded to the Monkeypox Fear Scale (MFS) and a single item of Intention to be vaccinated against Monkeypox. Using network analysis, central fear symptoms and associations between symptoms and intention to vaccinate were identified. Results: The results suggest that the node with the highest centrality was item 5 of the MFS. Regarding the connection between the intention to be vaccinated and the MFS items, a direct relationship was observed with item 1 and an inverse relationship with item 6. In addition, the relationship between these MFS items and intention to vaccinate is higher in men compared to women. While it would be expected that a greater presence of symptoms of fear of Monkeypox could lead people to have a greater intention to be vaccinated against the disease, the results could lead other researchers to generate evidence to explain this relationship in other Latin American countries. Discussion: The evidence is useful for developing policies that favor vaccination against Monkeypox in Peru and other Latin American countries.

Abstract

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to identify predictors of intention to be vaccinated against Monkeypox (Mpox) in a sample of Peruvian citizens. Methods A set of sociodemographic and psychological predictors were used, such as sex, sexual orientation, educational level, previous diagnosis of COVID-19, marital status, complete vaccination against COVID-19, employment status, living with vulnerable people, presence of chronic disease, area of residence, perceived usefulness of COVID-19 vaccines, fear of Mpox, conspiracy beliefs about Mpox, among others. A total of 472 Peruvian adults participated, selected by non-probabilistic snowball convenience sampling. A sociodemographic survey, the Mpox Fear Scale, was used. Conspiracy Beliefs about Mpox was assessed using three questions created specifically for this study. For inferential purposes, simple ordinal regressions ("crude models") were performed between each factor and the outcome. Results Regarding their intention to be vaccinated against Mpox, more than 60% expressed clear approval. Being non-heterosexual, having greater emotional fear of Mpox, and perceiving some potential for this disease to become the next pandemic were related to greater intention to vaccinate. On the other hand, being older, having low perceived usefulness of COVID-19 vaccines, and having higher conspiracy beliefs about Mpox were associated with lower intention to vaccinate. Conclusion The study provides initial information for future research seeking to better analyze Mpox vaccination intention. In addition, cross-sectional data are provided that can be used to develop public health policies that target subgroups with low prevalence of intention to vaccinate against Mpox.

Abstract

Desde una perspectiva sociocrítica y cualitativa, fueron objeto de análisis los desafíos en la formación inicial y continua que enfrenta la persona docente de Educación General Básica (EGB), tomando como referencia el perfil de estudiante esbozado en la política educativa costarricense. Para ello, se examinaron los hallazgos de la investigación publicada por el Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) en el año 2022, según la cual la formación inicial docente presenta una desarticulación teórica y práctica con implicancias negativas en el ejercicio profesional; asimismo, los planes de estudio de algunas universidades están desactualizados. También, se evidencia que el ministerio, como principal empleador público, debe definir las características del personal docente a contratar, de acuerdo con el perfil de salida del estudiantado y según la política educativa. Por último, la evaluación del profesorado necesita reformarse como insumo para los procesos de capacitación profesional.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the real use of cefazolin for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infective endocarditis (IE) in the Spanish National Endocarditis Database (GAMES) and to compare it with antistaphylococcal penicillin (ASP). Methods: Prospective cohort study with retrospective analysis of a cohort of MSSA IE treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Outcomes assessed were relapse; intra-hospital, overall, and endocarditis-related mortality; and adverse events. Risk of renal toxicity with each treatment was evaluated separately. Results: We included 631 IE episodes caused by MSSA treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Antibiotic treatment was cloxacillin, cefazolin, or both in 537 (85%), 57 (9%), and 37 (6%) episodes, respectively. Abstract

Abstract Objectives The present study aimed to evaluate the measurement invariance of a general measure of the perception of governmental responses to COVID-|19 (COVID-SCORE-10) in the general population of 13 Latin American countries. Methods A total of 5780 individuals from 13 Latin American and Caribbean countries selected by non-probabilistic snowball sampling participated. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed and the alignment method was used to evaluate invariance. Additionally, a graded response model was used for the assessment of item characteristics. Results The results indicate that there is approximate measurement invariance of the COVID-SCORE-10 among the participating countries. Furthermore, IRT results suggest that the COVID-SCORE-10 measures with good psychometric ability a broad spectrum of the construct assessed, especially around average levels. Comparison of COVID-SCORE-10 scores indicated that participants from Cuba, Uruguay and El Salvador had the most positive perceptions of government actions to address the pandemic. Thus, the underlying construct of perception of government actions was equivalent in all countries. Conclusion The results show the importance of initially establishing the fundamental measurement properties and MI before inferring the cross-cultural universality of the construct to be measured.

El modelo de ciudad heredado de los desarrollos urbanísticos de los años 90 y 2000 creó un espacio urbano en el que lo público y lo comunitario han dejado paso a lo individual y a lo privado. La baja densidad de los ensanches, los cambios en los hábitos de consumo y la digitalización de las relaciones personales y comerciales han provocado un progresivo abandono del espacio en planta baja de los edificios residenciales, con la consecuencia de la pérdida de lugares de relación en la cota cero de la ciudad. Frente a intervenciones que plantean una ocupación especulativa de esos locales convirtiéndolos en viviendas turísticas o apartamentos de pequeño tamaño, existen propuestas alternativas que buscan ampliar el espacio común e integrar dichos locales en una red colaborativa que recupere su uso colectivo. En una sociedad en la que es cada vez más lejano el uso común de los espacios públicos, en la que se desarticula lo comunitario al servicio de lo individual, es interesante recuperar espacios comunitarios para tejer nuevas redes de cuidados.

Abstract

El término digitalización es uno de los más empleados en aras de la modernización de la economía, la educación o las comunicaciones. A su consecución se destinan, desde hace algunos años, importantes cantidades de fondos públicos. El Gobierno de España ha establecido una agenda como hoja de ruta para la digitalización del país: España Digital 2026. En el ámbito del dibujo de arquitectura, desde los años 80-90, hemos creído estar inmersos en la era digital; la realidad es que el sector AEC, con graves problemas de productividad y eficiencia, está siendo empujado al cambio de modelo de gestión, y de la mano de su digitalización los procesos gráficos se redibujan. En este artículo se propone una mirada al dibujo de arquitectura, cuando abordamos la tercera década del siglo XXI, con el fin de propiciar una reflexión sobre los nuevos paradigmas.
