In the context of the matching-with-contracts model, we generalize the cumulative offer process to allow for arbitrary subsets of doctors to make proposals in each round. We show that, under a condition on the hospitals' choice functions, the outcome of this generalized cumulative offer process is independent of the sets of doctors making proposals in each round. Background Aim Study design Results Conclusions Relevance to Clinical Practice Patient–ventilator asynchrony (PVA) is a condition that commonly affects patients who are mechanically ventilated. PVA happens when the patient's own breathing effort and the ventilator preset settings are out of sync. Ventilator waveform monitoring is viewed as a difficult undertaking, even for experienced practitioners, despite being a non‐invasive and reliable tool for diagnosing PVA.To assess the knowledge levels and attitudes of critical care nurses (CCNs) regarding the use of ventilator waveform monitoring to detect PVA.A cross‐sectional online survey was conducted in three intensive care units (ICUs) in Alexandria, Egypt. The questionnaire consisted of four parts to evaluate CCNs’ level of knowledge and attitude regarding ventilator waveform monitoring and assess their ability to detect PVA.Of the 137 CCNs approached, 101 CCNs completed the survey, resulting in a 73.7% response rate. Most nurses (88.1%) demonstrated poor knowledge levels and negative attitudes (93.1%) towards using waveform monitoring to detect PVA. A significant relationship was found between nurses' knowledge of ventilator waveform monitoring and their participation in previous training programmes on mechanical ventilation (MV; p = .031). Additionally, nurses' attitudes towards ventilator waveform monitoring were significantly associated with their level of education (p = .002) and attendance in previous courses on waveform analysis (p = .020).A majority of CCNs have poor knowledge and negative attitudes regarding ventilator waveform monitoring. Previous training in MV and attendance courses on ventilator waveform analysis showed a significant correlation between nurses' level of knowledge and attitudes regarding ventilator waveform monitoring.Assessment of CCNs’ knowledge and attitudes regarding ventilator waveform monitoring for detecting patient–ventilator asynchrony (PVA) informs the development of future educational programmes, ultimately aiding in the delivery of prompt and high‐quality care. Extreme drought and intensification of land use pose substantial threats to ecosystem stability. However, existing studies that assess ecosystem stability focus primarily on the stability of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), while the stability of belowground net primary productivity (BNPP) is often not considered. Here, we examined the response patterns and drivers of ANPP stability and BNPP stability in an alpine meadow to drought and clipping (simulating grazing and mowing) by the implementation of five levels of simulated precipitation (1/12, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and ambient precipitation) and clipping (unclipped vs. clipped) treatments over 7 years (2016–2022). The results showed that extreme drought decreased ANPP stability, while moderate drought increased BNPP stability and net primary productivity stability. The findings highlight the importance of jointly considering above‐ and belowground processes when evaluating ecosystem stability. Moreover, clipping did not have an impact on ANPP stability but reduced BNPP stability, and clipping differentially affected the stability of ANPP and BNPP in response to extreme drought. Furthermore, ANPP stability was largely determined by species temporal asynchrony rather than richness, whereas dominant species stability strongly contributed to the variation in BNPP stability of this alpine meadow faced with drought and clipping. Synthesis: In general, these results provide experimental evidence for the decoupling of the responses of above‐ and belowground productivity stability to extreme drought and clipping. Our findings indicate that aboveground responses should not be used as the sole indicator of the whole ecosystem consequences of extreme drought and disturbance factors such as grazing or mowing, emphasizing the need to evaluate ecosystem stability from a whole ecosystem perspective. A growing number of studies have demonstrated that biodiversity is a strong and positive predictor of ecosystem temporal stability by simultaneously affecting multiple underlying mechanisms of stability, that is dominance, asynchrony and averaging effects. However, to date, no study has disentangled the relative role of these key mechanisms of stability in biodiversity experiments.We created a species richness gradient by mimicking a loss of rare species and assessed the role of species richness on community stability and, more importantly, quantified the relative role of three stabilizing mechanisms, that is dominance (stabilization due to stable dominants compared to the rest of the species in the community), asynchrony (stabilization due to temporal asynchrony between species), and averaging effects (pure effect of diversity) on community stability across a species richness gradient.We found that extreme species loss negatively impacted community stability, but just three species were enough to stabilize biomass production to a level similar to highly diverse communities. However, the similar stability of communities resulted from differing contributions from each stabilizing mechanism, depending on the community diversity. Since less abundant species were more temporally variable, species loss stabilized the populations of the remaining species. The loss of rare and subordinate species reduced the dominance and averaging effects, but increased the asynchrony effect. Hence, the asynchrony effect played a major role in the stability of species poor communities, while the averaging effect drove most of the stability of species rich communities. Overall, dominance played only a minor role, accounting for 5%–15% of the stabilization, while asynchrony and averaging effects were dominating forces contributing to ~85%–95% of the total stabilization.Synthesis. This study highlights the importance of biodiversity and roles of dominant and rare species for long‐term community stability and, for the first time, disentangles relative roles of dominance effect, asynchrony and averaging effect on community stability in a real‐world biodiversity experiment. Abstract Background Patient-ventilator asynchrony commonly occurs during pressure support ventilation (PSV). IntelliSync + software (Hamilton Medical AG, Bonaduz, Switzerland) is a new ventilation technology that continuously analyzes ventilator waveforms to detect the beginning and end of patient inspiration in real time. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological effect of IntelliSync + software on inspiratory trigger delay time, delta airway (Paw) and esophageal (Pes) pressure drop during the trigger phase, airway occlusion pressure at 0.1 s (P0.1), and hemodynamic variables. Methods A randomized crossover physiologic study was conducted in 14 mechanically ventilated patients under PSV. Patients were randomly assigned to receive conventional flow trigger and cycling, inspiratory trigger synchronization (I-sync), cycle synchronization (C-sync), and inspiratory trigger and cycle synchronization (I/C-sync) for 15 min at each step. Other ventilator settings were kept constant. Paw, Pes, airflow, P0.1, respiratory rate, SpO2, and hemodynamic variables were recorded. The primary outcome was inspiratory trigger and cycle delay time between each intervention. Secondary outcomes were delta Paw and Pes drop during the trigger phase, P0.1, SpO2, and hemodynamic variables. Results The time to initiate the trigger was significantly shorter with I-sync compared to baseline (208.9±91.7 vs. 301.4±131.7 msec; P = 0.002) and I/C-sync compared to baseline (222.8±94.0 vs. 301.4±131.7 msec; P = 0.005). The I/C-sync group had significantly lower delta Paw and Pes drop during the trigger phase compared to C-sync group (-0.7±0.4 vs. -1.2±0.8 cmH2O; P = 0.028 and − 1.8±2.2 vs. -2.8±3.2 cmH2O; P = 0.011, respectively). No statistically significant differences were found in cycle delay time, P0.1 and other physiological variables between the groups. Conclusions IntelliSync + software reduced inspiratory trigger delay time compared to the conventional flow trigger system during PSV mode. However, no significant improvements in cycle delay time and other physiological variables were observed with IntelliSync + software. Questions: Cover and biomass serve as common measures of species abundance in plant ecology. However, the underlying relationship between these two measures and its implications remain poorly understood. This makes results based on cover and biomass difficult to compare. Locations: Wet meadow, southeast of České Budějovice, Czech Republic (48°57′ N, 14°36′ E). Method: We developed theoretical expectations for systematic differences in characterizing vegetation using cover and biomass for species and community characteristics, including species diversity, temporal dynamics, and responses to experimental manipulations. We then tested these expectations using cover and biomass data from an experimental study of fertilization and dominant removal spanning 14 years (2001–2014). Results: Consistent with our expectations, on average, species biomass corresponded to the power of species cover, with a power coefficient slightly below 3/2. Community diversity indices calculated using cover and biomass were tightly correlated but were higher for cover. Temporal variabilities based on cover and biomass for individual species were also correlated, but higher for biomass than cover. Though strongly correlated, cover data show much stronger asynchrony, suggesting higher importance of compensatory dynamics. However, using the sum of individual species' cover values as a measure of total community abundance or productivity is problematic. Such a measure is nearly independent of total biomass and leads to contradictory results when used to characterize temporal variability. Species‐ and community‐level responses to treatments were congruent between the measures. Conclusions: Our study provides theoretical background for a convex relationship between plant cover and biomass. The data analysis confirms the relationship and its consequences for describing species‐ and community‐level properties. Most characteristics are well correlated between cover and biomass, but with one metric systematically shifted higher in many cases. Total abundance is the most sensitive measure and is well characterized by sum of biomass, but not by sum of cover. Biodiversity can stabilize ecological communities through biological insurance, but climate and other environmental changes may disrupt this process via simultaneous ecosystem destabilization and biodiversity loss. While changes to diversity–stability relationships (DSRs) and the underlying mechanisms have been extensively explored in terrestrial plant communities, this topic remains largely unexplored in benthic marine ecosystems that comprise diverse assemblages of producers and consumers. By analyzing two decades of kelp forest biodiversity survey data, we discovered changes in diversity, stability, and their relationships at multiple scales (biological organizational levels, spatial scales, and functional groups) that were linked with the most severe marine heatwave ever documented in the North Pacific Ocean. Moreover, changes in the strength of DSRs during/after the heatwave were more apparent among functional groups than both biological organizational levels (population vs. ecosystem levels) and spatial scales (local vs. broad scales). Specifically, the strength of DSRs decreased for fishes, increased for mobile invertebrates and understory algae, and were unchanged for sessile invertebrates during/after the heatwave. Our findings suggest that biodiversity plays a key role in stabilizing marine ecosystems, but the resilience of DSRs to adverse climate impacts primarily depends on the functional identities of ecological communities. This article discusses the potential harm caused by patient-ventilator interactions (PVIs) in patients receiving mechanical ventilation for acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. The authors conducted a study to assess the association between different types of breaths and surrogate markers of lung strain, stress, and mechanical power. They found that certain abnormal PVIs, such as double-triggered and flow-limited breaths, had the strongest potential to increase markers of lung stress and strain. However, there are limitations to the study, including the use of surrogate markers and the specific mode of ventilation used. The potential for climate change to disrupt phenology‐mediated interactions in interaction networks has attracted considerable attention in recent decades. Frequently, studies emphasize the fragility of ephemeral seasonal interactions, and the risks posed by phenological asynchrony. Here, we argue that the fitness consequences of asynchrony in phenological interactions may often be more buffered than is typically acknowledged. We identify three main forms that buffering may take: (i) mechanisms that reduce asynchrony between consumer and resource; (ii) mechanisms that reduce the costs of being asynchronous; and (iii) mechanisms that dampen interannual variance in performance across higher organizational units. Using synchrony between the hatching of winter moth caterpillars and the leafing of their host‐plants as a case study, we identify a wide variety of buffers that reduce the detrimental consequences of phenological asynchrony on caterpillar individuals, populations, and meta‐populations. We follow this by drawing on examples across a breadth of taxa, and demonstrate that these buffering mechanisms may be quite general. We conclude by identifying key gaps in our knowledge of the fitness and demographic consequences of buffering, in the context of phenological mismatch. Buffering has the potential to substantially alter our understanding of the biotic impacts of future climate change—a greater recognition of the contribution of these mechanisms may reveal that many trophic interactions are surprisingly resilient, and also serve to shift research emphasis to those systems with fewer buffers and towards identifying the limits of those buffers. Soil nutrients are ubiquitously heterogeneously distributed and such heterogeneity can greatly influence plant and population growth, interspecific competition and community structure and productivity. Despite these impacts, it is still unknown how soil nutrient heterogeneity affects community stability. We conducted a three-year experiment in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, involving one homogeneous and six heterogeneous treatments of N, P, and K addition. The heterogeneous treatments varied in patch size, patch contrast, and number of patch types. Community stability in the homogeneous treatment tended to be the highest, likely due to high asynchrony among functional groups. However, such effects varied with patch size, patch contrast and number of patch types. Also, the effects of patch contrast and number of patch types on community stability and asynchrony among functional groups depended on patch size. The grass proportion was significantly affected by soil nutrient heterogeneity, and greater number of patch types increased the grass proportion at the small patch size, but not at the large one. Additionally, species richness, Shannon-Weiner index and Simpson index were greater in high patch contrast compared to the homogeneous treatment, but community evenness was not. These results suggest that soil nutrient heterogeneity can influence community stability by modifying functional group asynchrony and community evenness, rather than biomass proportions or other plant diversity indices. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating soil nutrient heterogeneity in modeling the responses of alpine ecosystems to continuous nitrogen deposition and climate warming.

Although nitrogen (N) enrichment is known to threaten the temporal stability of aboveground net primary productivity, it remains unclear how it alters that of belowground microbial abundance and whether its impact can be regulated by grassland degradation. Using data from N enrichment experiments at temperate grasslands with no, moderate, severe, and extreme degradation degrees, we quantified the temporal stability of soil microbial abundance (hereafter 'microbial community stability') using the ratio of the mean quantitative PCR to its standard deviation over 4 years. Both bacterial and fungal community stability sharply decreased when N input exceeded 30 g N m−2 year−1 in non‐degraded grasslands, whereas a reduction in this threshold occurred in degraded grasslands. Microbial species diversity, species asynchrony, and species associations jointly altered microbial community stability. Interestingly, the linkages between plant and microbial community stability were strengthened in degraded grasslands, suggesting that plants and soil microbes might depend on each other to keep stable communities in harsh environments. Our findings highlighted the importance of grassland degradation in regulating the responses of microbial community stability to N enrichment and provided experimental evidence for understanding the relationships between plant and microbial community stability. Asynchrony in population abundance can buffer the effects of environmental change leading to greater community and ecosystem stability. Both environmental (abiotic) drivers and species functional (biotic) traits can influence population dynamics leading to asynchrony. However, empirical evidence linking dissimilarity in species traits to abundance asynchrony is limited, especially for understudied taxa such as insects. To fill this knowledge gap, we explored the relationship between pairwise species trait dissimilarity and asynchrony in interannual abundance change between pairs of species for 422 moth, butterfly, and bumblebee species in Great Britain. We also explored patterns differentiating traits that we assumed to capture 'sensitivity to environmental variables' (such as body mass), and traits that may reflect 'diversity in exposure' to environmental conditions and lead to niche partitioning (for example, habitat uses, and intra‐annual emergence periods). As expected, species trait dissimilarity calculated overall and for many individual traits representing response and exposure was positively correlated with asynchrony in all three insect groups. We found that 'exposure' traits, especially those relating to the phenology of species, had the strongest relationship with abundance asynchrony from all tested traits. Positive relationships were not simply due to shared evolutionary history leading to similar life‐history strategies: detected effects remained significant for most traits after accounting for phylogenetic relationships within models. Our results provide empirical support that dissimilarity in traits linked to species exposure and sensitivity to the environment could be important for temporal dissimilarity in insect abundance. Hence, we suggest that general trait diversity, but especially diversity in 'exposure' traits, could play a significant role in the resilience of insect communities to short‐term environmental perturbations through driving asynchrony between species abundances. A functional group approach to analyzing ecological processes calls for aggregating species populations' data (e.g., biomass, abundance) into larger functional units. This method offers a more direct insight into the coarse community and ecosystem dynamics than a species level. Since aggregation changes the scale of analysis, it is reasonable to expect that the results and inferences will also change. To gauge the nature and size of this effect, we examined two sets of communities using the same methodology at taxonomic and functional levels. We asked how asynchrony among constituent populations stabilizes the regional biomass or abundance in two systems: zooplankton in North American temperate lakes and rock pool invertebrates in Jamaica. We aggregated species into pairs by organism size for the functional level analysis because it correlates well with life history traits. We hypothesized that taxonomical and functional level analyses would yield different pictures and inferences. We analyzed asynchrony among local populations, metapopulations, and populations of different species at different locations. We found that in lakes, different asynchrony classes contributed to the stabilization of the regional metric than in the rock pools. We further found that aggregation of taxa into functional units changed the pattern of differences between lakes and rock pools revealed by taxonomical analysis and that each set of communities responded differently to species lumping. While aggregating taxa leads to different results, the taxonomic and functional lenses add new insights to the biological interpretation of mechanisms stabilizing communities when interpreted jointly. Specifically, population asynchrony—a known stabilizing factor—can provide complementary stabilizing mechanisms when seen through taxonomic and functional lenses. Without exposing these modes, inferences about abundance/biomass/richness stabilizing contributions arising from asynchrony will remain tenuous. Abstract Objective Uncanniness plays a vital role in interactions with humans and artificial agents. Previous studies have shown that uncanniness is caused by a higher sensitivity to deviation or atypicality in specialized categories, such as faces or facial expressions, marked by configural processing. We hypothesized that asynchrony, understood as a temporal deviation in facial expression, could cause uncanniness in the facial expression. We also hypothesized that the effect of asynchrony could be disrupted through inversion. Results Sixty-four participants rated the uncanniness of synchronous or asynchronous dynamic face emotion expressions of human, android, or computer-generated (CG) actors, presented either upright or inverted. Asynchrony vs. synchrony expressions increased uncanniness for all upright expressions except for CG angry expressions. Inverted compared with upright presentations produced less evident asynchrony effects for human angry and android happy expressions. These results suggest that asynchrony can cause dynamic expressions to appear uncanny, which is related to configural processing but different across agents.

The stability of ecological communities over time, often quantified using their aggregated abundance or biomass, is thought to be influenced by species richness and the asynchrony of species abundance fluctuations. However, the relationship between community stability and the stability of ecosystem functioning provided by this community has been little explored, especially for functions involving several trophic levels such as plant pollination. Understanding the mechanisms driving community stability and how this should be related to the stability of ecosystem functions is important to predict the resilience of communities in front of the increasing threats to biodiversity.Using a 5‐year dataset across 13 Mediterranean shrublands and 12 plant species, we assessed the effect of pollinator richness and asynchrony as drivers of stability in plant visitation rates and plant reproductive success. Additionally, we analysed whether the effects of species richness and visitation rate on plant reproductive success were consistent over the years.The stability of plant visitation rates is driven by the asynchrony of pollinator species abundances, but the effect of pollinator species richness is only indirect, as richer communities also tend to have more asynchronous populations. In contrast, the stability of plant reproductive success is not related to the stability of pollinator visitation rates. A year‐by‐year analysis reveals that plants in the studied system are unlikely to be limited by pollinator abundance except in specific years, blurring any potential effect of visitation rate stability on reproductive success stability.Synthesis: We highlight the importance of asynchronous fluctuating species that are redundant in their function as an important factor for the stability of ecosystems. This is particularly important for pollinators with diverse responses to environmental fluctuations, as their asynchrony between years ensures stable levels of flower visitation rates. However, we warn that final ecosystem functions such as plant reproductive success, which depends not only on pollinators but on plant competition or resource availability, might be decoupled from first order ecosystem functions (i.e. visitation rates and pollen deposition) when pollination is not a limiting factor. Climate warming, often accompanied by extreme drought events, could have profound effects on both plant community structure and ecosystem functioning. However, how warming interacts with extreme drought to affect community‐ and ecosystem‐level stability remains a largely open question. Using data from a manipulative experiment with three warming treatments in an alpine meadow that experienced one extreme drought event, we investigated how warming modulates resistance and recovery of community structural and ecosystem functional stability in facing with extreme drought. We found warming decreased resistance and recovery of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and structural resistance but increased resistance and recovery of belowground net primary productivity (BNPP), overall net primary productivity (NPP), and structural recovery. The findings highlight the importance of jointly considering above‐ and belowground processes when evaluating ecosystem stability under global warming and extreme climate events. The stability of dominant species, rather than species richness and species asynchrony, was identified as a key predictor of ecosystem functional resistance and recovery, except for BNPP recovery. In addition, structural resistance of common species contributed strongly to the resistance changes in BNPP and NPP. Importantly, community structural resistance and recovery dominated the resistance and recovery of BNPP and NPP, but not for ANPP, suggesting the different mechanisms underlie the maintenance of stability of above‐ versus belowground productivity. This study is among the first to explain that warming modulates ecosystem stability in the face of extreme drought and lay stress on the need to investigate ecological stability at the community level for a more mechanistic understanding of ecosystem stability in response to climate extremes. Climate change raises a serious threat to global entomofauna—the foundation of many ecosystems—by threatening species preservation and the ecosystem services they provide. Already, changes in climate—warming—are causing (i) sharp phenological mismatches among host–parasitoid systems by reducing the window of host susceptibility, leading to early emergence of either the host or its associated parasitoid and affecting mismatched species' fitness and abundance; (ii) shifting arthropods' expansion range towards higher altitudes, and therefore migratory pest infestations are more likely; and (iii) reducing biological control effectiveness by natural enemies, leading to potential pest outbreaks. Here, we provided an overview of the warming consequences on biodiversity and functionality of agroecosystems, highlighting the vital role that phenology plays in ecology. Also, we discussed how phenological mismatches would affect biological control efficacy, since an accurate description of stage differentiation (metamorphosis) of a pest and its associated natural enemy is crucial in order to know the exact time of the host susceptibility/suitability or stage when the parasitoids are able to optimize their parasitization or performance. Campaigns regarding landscape structure/heterogeneity, reduction of pesticides, and modelling approaches are urgently needed in order to safeguard populations of natural enemies in a future warmer world. Identifying environmental drivers of demographic variation is key to predicting community‐level impacts in response to global change. Climate conditions can synchronize population trends and can occur both spatially for populations of the same species, and across multiple species within the same local community. The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of temporal variation in survival for freshwater fish communities in two geographically close but isolated sites and to understand the amount of variation accounted for by abiotic covariates including metrics of water temperature and stream flow. Using mark‐recapture data, we estimated bi‐monthly apparent survival in a Bayesian Cormack‐Jolly‐Seber framework. The model included random effects to quantify temporal variance to understand species synchrony with the rest of the fish community and between sites. Study species included bluehead chub (Nocomis leptocephalus), creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), and striped jumprock (Moxostoma rupiscartes) in the southeastern USA. Results showed that survival varied over time and periods of low survival were associated with higher mean water temperature. However, temporal patterns of survival differed among species and between sites, where survival was synchronous among species within a site but asynchronous between sites for the same species despite their spatial proximity. Study streams differed in summer thermal regimes, which resulted in contrasting summer survival patterns, suggesting sensitivity of these fishes to warming. We found that interspecific synchrony was greater than spatial synchrony, where regional drivers such as temperature may interact with local habitat leading to differences in survival patterns at fine spatial scales. Finally, these findings show that changes in the timing and magnitude of environmental conditions can be critical in limiting vital rates and that some populations may be more resilient to climate variation than others. Nitrogen (N) enrichment threatens the ability of grasslands to support sustainable functions. However, we do not know whether grassland degradation can alter the effect of N enrichment on the multidimensional stability of plant community productivity.Using data from N enrichment experiments at temperate grassland sites (no, moderate and severe degradation) that experienced a flooding event, we tested the impact of N enrichment on multidimensional stability (resistance, resilience, recovery and temporal stability) of plant community productivity.In non‐degraded and moderately degraded grasslands, N enrichment negatively influenced resistance and temporal stability but positively altered resilience and did not change recovery. Species asynchrony altered all stability dimensions, except for recovery. In severely degraded grasslands, the effects of N enrichment on multidimensional stability shifted. Resilience and recovery were negatively affected by N enrichment, while resistance and temporal stability were not influenced. A decrease in dominant species stability reduced community resilience and recovery in severely degraded grasslands.Synthesis and application. Grassland degradation regulates the effect of N enrichment on the multidimensional stability of plant community productivity. OBJECTIVES: Patient-ventilator asynchrony is often observed during mechanical ventilation and is associated with higher mortality. We hypothesized that patientventilator asynchrony causes lung and diaphragm injury and dysfunction. DESIGN: Prospective randomized animal study. SETTING: University research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Eighteen New Zealand White rabbits. INTERVENTIONS: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) model was established by depleting surfactants. Each group (assist control, breath stacking, and reverse triggering) was simulated by phrenic nerve stimulation. The effects of each group on lung function, lung injury (wet-to-dry lung weight ratio, total protein, and interleukin-6 in bronchoalveolar lavage), diaphragm function (diaphragm force generation curve), and diaphragm injury (cross-sectional area of diaphragm muscle fibers, histology) were measured. Diaphragm RNA sequencing was performed using breath stacking and assist control (n = 2 each). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Inspiratory effort generated by phrenic nerve stimulation was small and similar among groups (esophageal pressure swing ≈ -2.5 cm H2O). Breath stacking resulted in the largest tidal volume (>10 mL/kg) and highest inspiratory transpulmonary pressure, leading to worse oxygenation, worse lung compliance, and lung injury. Reverse triggering did not cause lung injury. No asynchrony events were observed in assist control, whereas eccentric contractions occurred in breath stacking and reverse triggering, but more frequently in breath stacking. Breath stacking and reverse triggering significantly reduced diaphragm force generation. Diaphragmatic histology revealed that the area fraction of abnormal muscle was x2.5 higher in breath stacking (vs assist control) and x2.1 higher in reverse triggering (vs assist control). Diaphragm RNA sequencing analysis revealed that genes associated with muscle differentiation and contraction were suppressed, whereas cytokine- and chemokine-mediated proinflammatory responses were activated in breath stacking versus assist control. CONCLUSIONS: Breath stacking caused lung and diaphragm injury, whereas reverse triggering caused diaphragm injury. Thus, careful monitoring and management of patient-ventilator asynchrony may be important to minimize lung and diaphragm injury from spontaneous breathing in ARDS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Asynchrony in population abundance can buffer the effects of environmental change leading to greater community and ecosystem stability. Both environmental (abiotic) drivers and species functional (biotic) traits can influence population dynamics leading to asynchrony. However, empirical evidence linking dissimilarity in species traits to abundance asynchrony is limited, especially for understudied taxa such as insects. To fill this knowledge gap, we explored the relationship between pairwise species trait dissimilarity and asynchrony in interannual abundance change between pairs of species for 422 moth, butterfly, and bumblebee species in Great Britain. We also explored patterns differentiating traits that we assumed to capture ‘sensitivity to environmental variables’ (such as body mass), and traits that may reflect ‘diversity in exposure’ to environmental conditions and lead to niche partitioning (for example, habitat uses, and intra‐annual emergence periods). As expected, species trait dissimilarity calculated overall and for many individual traits representing response and exposure was positively correlated with asynchrony in all three insect groups. We found that ‘exposure’ traits, especially those relating to the phenology of species, had the strongest relationship with abundance asynchrony from all tested traits. Positive relationships were not simply due to shared evolutionary history leading to similar life‐history strategies: detected effects remained significant for most traits after accounting for phylogenetic relationships within models. Our results provide empirical support that dissimilarity in traits linked to species exposure and sensitivity to the environment could be important for temporal dissimilarity in insect abundance. Hence, we suggest that general trait diversity, but especially diversity in ‘exposure’ traits, could play a significant role in the resilience of insect communities to short‐term environmental perturbations through driving asynchrony between species abundances.

Abstract A functional group approach to analyzing ecological processes calls for aggregating species populations' data (e.g., biomass, abundance) into larger functional units. This method offers a more direct insight into the coarse community and ecosystem dynamics than a species level. Since aggregation changes the scale of analysis, it is reasonable to expect that the results and inferences will also change. To gauge the nature and size of this effect, we examined two sets of communities using the same methodology at taxonomic and functional levels. We asked how asynchrony among constituent populations stabilizes the regional biomass or abundance in two systems: zooplankton in North American temperate lakes and rock pool invertebrates in Jamaica. We aggregated species into pairs by organism size for the functional level analysis because it correlates well with life history traits. We hypothesized that taxonomical and functional level analyses would yield different pictures and inferences. We analyzed asynchrony among local populations, metapopulations, and populations of different species at different locations. We found that in lakes, different asynchrony classes contributed to the stabilization of the regional metric than in the rock pools. We further found that aggregation of taxa into functional units changed the pattern of differences between lakes and rock pools revealed by taxonomical analysis and that each set of communities responded differently to species lumping. While aggregating taxa leads to different results, the taxonomic and functional lenses add new insights to the biological interpretation of mechanisms stabilizing communities when interpreted jointly. Specifically, population asynchrony—a known stabilizing factor—can provide complementary stabilizing mechanisms when seen through taxonomic and functional lenses. Without exposing these modes, inferences about abundance/biomass/richness stabilizing contributions arising from asynchrony will remain tenuous. Exposing these modes offers a path for significant breakthroughs in linking local, spatial, and functional structures to multispecies system dynamics.

The positive effects of cooperative learning are well-documented in face-to-face environments, but its efficacy in asynchronous online environments remains unclear. Recent experimental research suggests that in comparing face-to-face and synchronous versions of cooperative learning, motivation, achievement, and cooperative perceptions, all decrease under asynchronous online conditions, which raises questions about how and why this occurs. The purpose of this study was to clarify this issue by testing whether asynchrony promotive interaction and moderates the association between cooperative goals and cooperative outcomes, using a repeated-measures experimental–control design. Results indicate that asynchrony affects promotive interaction in a way that disrupts the processes that occur in cooperative learning. Notably, the academic support component of promotive interaction was more susceptible to the effects of asynchrony, as it decreased among asynchronous students over time, particularly among those reporting above-average levels of cooperation, belonging, and positive emotion.

We give a protocol for Asynchronous Distributed Key Generation (A-DKG) that is optimally resilient (can withstand f < n 3 faulty parties), has a constant expected number of rounds, has O (λ n 3) expected communication complexity, and assumes only the existence of a PKI. Prior to our work, the best A-DKG protocols required Ω (n) expected number of rounds, and Ω ( n 4) expected communication. Our A-DKG protocol relies on several building blocks that are of independent interest. We define and design a Proposal Election (PE) protocol that allows parties to retrospectively agree on a valid proposal after enough proposals have been sent from different parties. With constant probability the elected proposal was proposed by a nonfaulty party. In building our PE protocol, we design a Verifiable Gather protocol which allows parties to communicate which proposals they have and have not seen in a verifiable manner. The final building block to our A-DKG is a Validated Asynchronous Byzantine Agreement (VABA) protocol. We use our PE protocol to construct a VABA protocol that does not require leaders or an asynchronous DKG setup. Sustainable provision of critical ecosystem services in drylands is reliant on their stability under anthropogenic disturbances. Livestock grazing and shrub encroachment are the primary drivers of disturbance that impact their biodiversity and production dynamics. However, the effects of grazing on the stability at multiple scales, particularly following the transition from grass‐dominated to shrub‐encroached drylands, is still largely unexplored.Here, we conducted comparable sheep‐grazing experiments in two types of drylands (grass‐dominated vs. shrub‐encroached grasslands) on the Mongolia Plateau to explore the effects of grazing and shrub encroachment on biodiversity and stability at multiple scales. We examined how grazing affected the temporal stability of aboveground biomass in herbaceous communities in both grass‐dominated and shrub‐encroached grasslands, through two potential mechanisms: insurance effects and changes in the population‐level stability of individual species.We found that an increase in sheep grazing intensity had significant and negative effects on insurance effects by decreasing both species asynchrony and spatial asynchrony but it had no effects on population stability, consequently leading to reductions in herbaceous community stability of the grasslands. However, grazing‐increased insurance effects cancelled out grazing‐decreased population stability, contributing to no changes in the community stability of shrub‐encroached grasslands. Likely, because grazing‐induced reductions in the relative abundance of the dominant species were more noticeable in shrub‐encroached grasslands than that of in grasslands. Moreover, the grazing‐decreased abundance of dominant species was directly correlated to increases in insurance effects in shrub‐encroached grasslands but not in grasslands, despite the positive relationships between population stability and the relative abundance of the dominant species in both grass‐dominated and shrub‐encroached drylands.Synthesis and applications. Our results indicate that grazing can decrease the stability of herbaceous production in drylands but this negative effect is attenuated with the transition from grasslands to shrub‐encroached grasslands, suggesting that grazing effects on herbaceous community stability can be altered by shrub encroachment in drylands. Furthermore, the stability of dominant grasses plays a crucial role in stabilizing herbaceous communities and should be considered in promoting sustainable ecosystem functioning and services in drylands. As a common grassland management practice in many high‐latitude regions worldwide, mowing has great impacts on grassland functioning and stability. Species richness, species asynchrony and species stability have been suggested as central in responses to environmental change. Mowing can evoke plant defence system due to physical damages to plants. However, no studies have comprehensively evaluated the role of plant defence functional traits, species richness, species asynchrony and stability in ecosystem functioning under mowing regimes across timescales.In this study, we set up short‐term (4 years) and long‐term (16 years) mowing experiments with three stubble heights (control, 10 cm, 2 cm) in a temperate steppe of Inner Mongolia. We investigated the effects of mowing‐induced changes in distribution metrics associated with plant defence traits, that is mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis of trait distribution, on ecosystem stability of grassland communities using structural equation modelling.We found that grassland ecosystem stability was enhanced by increasing mowing duration and decreasing stubble height. Mowing‐induced increase in abundance and diversity of plant defence traits contributed to greater ecosystem stability by enhancing species asynchrony and population stability. Moreover, we found that mowing enhanced the abundance and diversity of plant defence traits of dominant species and contributed to population stability and species asynchrony, thus enhancing temporal stability of grassland ecosystems.These results demonstrate the important roles of plant defence traits in maintaining stability of grasslands under mowing, and highlight that, in addition to species richness, asynchrony and population stability, plant functional defence trait acts in stabilizing ecosystem functions under human‐induced environmental changes. Ensemble musicians must navigate a complex sensory environment to produce cohesive performances. The purpose of this study was to examine pulse alignment among performers of different experience levels facing increasingly asynchronous auditory and visual information. Musicians (N = 51) who were current members of large instrumental ensembles watched a video of a conductor outlining a 4/4 pattern while hearing a multivoiced instrumental ensemble soundtrack and were asked to tap the pulse on a tablet-based pad. Each of nine examples was presented in one of three experimental formats: control (steady audio and video), audio (ensemble) accelerating/video (conductor beat pattern) decelerating, and video accelerating/audio decelerating. Rate of pulse change was ±7.5% with initial tempos of 108, 127, and 146 bpm. Data consisted of (1) deviations (ms) from a consistent IOI (steady pulse) and (2) mean deviations from audio (ensemble) or video (conductor) pulse. In the asynchronous conditions, participants broadly adhered to auditory or visual information rather than to a steady rate of pulse. There was no significant difference between information stream preference. Experience was a significant factor in audio information deviations; more experienced performers found audio information to be a more salient reference point, consistent with results reported for less contextualized timekeeping tasks. Environmental change is a crucial driver shaping grassland biodiversity and stability. Both environmental change and stability contain multiple dimensions. Nonetheless, few studies examined multiple dimensions of stability in response to environmental change, especially under the combined effects of climatic variability and grazing intensity. Here, we conducted a 7-year field sheep grazing experiment, and we evaluated the impacts of grazing intensity (GI) and climate variability (temperature and precipitation variability) on plant community diversity and productivity and multi-dimensional stability using linear and structural equation models. Our results show that increasing grazing intensity significantly decreased temporal stability but did not affect resistance stability. Compared with the non-grazing (NG) treatment, grazing reduced temporal stability by 35.78%. The decline is primarily attributed to the grazing-induced reduction in evenness and weakening of species asynchrony, which in turn impairs insurance effects. The insignificant change in resistance stability was attributed to a trade-off between reduced interspecific competition and direct negative effects. Furthermore, temperature variability and precipitation variability exacerbate and mitigate the effects of grazing on temporal stability (negative) and resistance stability (positive), respectively. Overall, temporal stability is mainly influenced by temperature variability and GI, while resistance stability is mainly affected by GI. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the dimensions of stability and disturbance. Different dimensions of stability may respond differently to disturbance. Grassland degradation is a widespread concern globally. Nutrient addition is widely recognized as an important management measure for degraded grassland restoration, but nutrient inputs may have important effects on temporal stability of communities. However, it is unclear how the degradation degrees regulate the impacts of adding nitrogen (N) on temporal stability of communities due to large variations in community composition and soil nutrient content. Herein, long-term experimental study was used to identify the N influences on temporal stability of community and driving factors of alpine grasslands at three degradational stages (none (ND), moderate (MD), and heavily degraded grassland (HD)). Elevated N could significantly enhance the aboveground biomass of ND, while there was no notable effect on MD and HD. However, N addition significantly lowered the temporal stability of all these three grasslands, although species richness was only pronouncedly reduced in MD. Our most conspicuous outcome is the major mechanism of temporal stability of community varied with degradation stages. N addition decreased temporal stability of the community predominantly by decrease in the richness of species and the stability of dominant species in ND and MD while decrease in dominant species stability, asynchrony, and richness of species in HD. This study highlights that impacts of N enrichment on temporal stability of community are potentially intermediated via community composition of alpine grasslands, which can offer guidance for scientific management and rehabilitation of degraded alpine grasslands.

The role of anther characteristics in orchid taxonomy, cladistic analysis, and understanding the development and evolution of various traits is significant. Therefore, Herminium lanceum (Thunb. ex Sw.) Vuijk was selected for the study due to the lack of information about these characteristics. In this taxon, anther primordium developed two thecae directed towards the lateral side, which produced wedge-shaped, rectangular or triangular massulae through repeated mitotic divisions of archesporial cells. The anther wall developed from the outer secondary parietal layer and inner secondary parietal layer, made up of epidermis, endothecium, a middle layer, and tapetum. Each theca had a central septum that divided it into two microsporangia. Tapetum of dual origin was observed. Cytokinesis produced isobilateral, tetrahedral, linear, T-shaped and decussate types of microspore tetrads. Each microspore had a smaller lenticular generative cell and a larger spherical vegetative cell, which were formed by the mitotic division of the nucleus. Additionally, the endothecium developed ring-shaped fibrous thickenings. Massulae of two locules were united to the reticulum and formed bipartite sectile pollinium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the problem of functioning of a language-gifted pupil in the 1st grade of primary school during English lessons, showing features of asynchronous development. The goal of the research was to indicate to what extent the implemented core curriculum and teaching methods meet the needs of a 7-year-old boy in the experiences of the child and his parents. In the scientific inquiry, an individual case study was used with the use of a semi-directed, problem-focused interview. The results of the conducted research have shown that the curriculum and educational methods do not enable individual development of the child in the language area while arousing reluctance to participate in the education process. which results in the appearance of emotional difficulties. The conducted research encourages discussion on the need for changes in the organization of the education process of talented, developmentally asynchronous students in various areas of education and to search for practical solutions. This work consideres asynchronous shared memory systems in which any number of processes may crash. It identifies relaxations of fetch & increment, queues, sets and stacks that can be non-blocking or wait-free implemented using only Read/Write operations, without Read-After-Write synchronization patterns. Set-linearizability, a generalization of linearizability designed to specify concurrent behaviors, is used to formally express these relaxations and precisely identify the subset of executions which preserve the original sequential behavior. The specifications allow for an item to be returned more than once by different operations, but only in case of concurrency; we call such a relaxation multiplicity. Hence, these definitions give rise to new notions and new objects where concurrency explicitly appears in the specification of the objects. Higher plant species diversity decreases variability of plant community productivity. The stabilizing effect of plant diversity can result from species‐specific responses to environmental fluctuations and from shifts in competitive hierarchies. Evolutionary adaptation of species to surrounding plant diversity could further decrease productivity variability.We used a three‐year dataset from a crop diversity experiment with seven species to assess the effect of crop diversity and selection history on temporal variability of yield.We found contrasting patterns of temporal variability: Yield of species varied more in mixtures than in monocultures over years. However, at community‐level, we found lower yield variability in crop mixtures compared to monocultures, although only in combination with fertilizer application under Mediterranean climate. Furthermore, we found that a mixture selection history can increase yield productivity and decrease its variability, although only in monocultures. This suggests that the interspecific interactions among crops in mixtures act as an evolutionary selective force, promoting niche complementarity.Synthesis. Our results highlight the ecological and evolutionary role of plant interactions in crop mixtures, which can affect yield stability, while also reflecting on the importance of climate and resource availability in modifying the diversity‐stability relationship. Climate change has led to widespread shifts in the timing of key life history events between interacting species (phenological asynchrony) with hypothesized cascading negative fitness impacts on one or more of the interacting species—often termed 'mismatch'. Yet, predicting the types of systems prone to mismatch remains a major hurdle. Recent reviews have argued that many studies do not provide strong evidence of the underlying match‐mismatch hypothesis, but none have quantitatively analysed support for it. Here, we test the hypothesis by estimating the prevalence of mismatch across antagonistic trophic interactions in terrestrial systems and then examine whether studies that meet the assumptions of the hypothesis are more likely to find a mismatch. Despite a large range of synchrony to asynchrony, we did not find general support for the hypothesis. Our results thus question the general applicability of this hypothesis in terrestrial systems, but they also suggest specific types of data missing to robustly refute it. We highlight the critical need to define resource seasonality and the window of 'match' for the most rigorous tests of the hypothesis. The assumption that greater biodiversity enhances ecosystem stability, commonly known as 'portfolio effect', has attracted considerable research attention. However, the potential portfolio effects on spatial stability (the similarity of ecosystem functioning among forest communities) are still poorly examined especially at different spatial scales and under varying environmental stress conditions. Accordingly, this study investigates the biodiversity–spatial stability relationship among regional communities across different spatial scales and environmental conditions in a temperate forest region.We define spatial stability as the invariability of the productivity of woody plants among plots within a regional community. To test spatial stability, the N closest plots to a given plot were aggregated to form regional communities representing different spatial scales. Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate how biodiversity (including taxonomic [TD] and phylogenetic diversity [PD]) increases spatial stability via species asynchrony and/or population stability across spatial scales. Hierarchical Bayesian modelling was used to evaluate the environmental dependence of the portfolio effects on spatial stability.TD and PD both increased the spatial stability by increasing asynchrony, but decreased population stability. The portfolio effect of TD on spatial stability became stronger and reached saturation at the intermediate scale and then decreased as regional communities became larger. The portfolio effects of TD were weaker under the stressful conditions of drought, high precipitation seasonality and high elevation but unchanged across temperature seasonality and human disturbance. PD showed no discernable effect on spatial stability and did not change across spatial scale and environmental condition.Our results suggest that the positive effect of biodiversity on species asynchrony overcomes the negative biodiversity effect on population stability to buffer the spatial change in productivity in diverse communities. Future research of the biodiversity–spatial stability relationship may thus benefit from incorporating different spatial scales and environmental conditions into the analysis. Spatial heterogeneity affects plant community composition and diversity. It is particularly noticeable in annual plant communities, which vary in space and time over short distances and periods, forming meta-communities at the regional scale. This study was conducted at the coastal dune ecosystem in Nizzanim nature reserve, Israel. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the spatial heterogeneity, which is expressed in differences in the fixation levels of the dunes and patches outside and beneath the dominant Artemisia monosperma shrubs, on the characteristics of the annual plant meta-community and its temporal stability, considering the mechanisms that may affect it. Thirteen dunes were studied: three mobile, seven semi-fixed, and three fixed dunes. Data on the annual plants were collected during the spring seasons of 2006, 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016. For each dune, 72 quadrats of 40 × 40 cm were sampled yearly, with 24 quadrats per slope aspect (windward, leeward, and crest), 12 under the shrub, and 12 in the open. The results indicate that the transition from mobile dunes through semi-fixed to fixed dunes is characterized by an increase in annual plant cover, species richness, species diversity, changes in plant communities, and stability driven by the asynchrony of species population fluctuations. Pollination is critical for the production of many crops, and both insect- and wind-based pollination systems are increasingly disrupted by bloom asynchrony, weather events, and high demand for available insect pollinators. Artificial pollination systems can provide a security of yield even in poor pollination scenarios, and have been attracting increasing attention over the past decade. Here, we review pollen collection and pollen application technologies that have been employed to date. Major categories of mechanical pollination technology include: hand-pollination, handheld and backpack devices, vehicle-mounted devices, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and robotic and autonomous pollinators. The majority of the artificial pollination systems above are used to supplement natural pollination, but for some crops, these systems were found to perform adequately by themselves, including kiwifruit, olive, date palm, walnut, tomato, and hybrid maize seed. These systems often treat pollen as a system input, creating a chicken-and-egg problem in which the system is not economical without pollen and the pollen is not economical to collect without wide uptake of the system. To combat this, there has been success in developing mechanical harvesters for some crop plants (particularly almond and maize), but future work is needed for artificial pollination to be a commercial reality for the increasing number of cropping systems that are experiencing pollination deficits. The purpose of this manuscript is to report on the finding of asynchrony measures during Improvised Active Music Therapy (IAMT) sessions with individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). In this single subject multiple baseline design across subjects, the study measured asynchrony of three right-handed participants with PD while playing uninterrupted improvised music on a simplified electronic drum-set. During baseline, the music therapist played rhythms with low to moderate density of syncopation. During treatment, the music therapist introduced rhythms with moderate to high density of syncopation. The music content of the sessions was transformed into digital music using Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). MIDI data were analyzed to determine participants' and the music therapist's asynchrony (on acoustic guitar) during baseline and treatment conditions. The results of this manuscript suggest that all participants exhibited total negative mean asynchrony and in that the music therapist exhibited total positive mean asynchrony scores within and across conditions. All participants also demonstrated score fluctuation in left foot and right foot as compared to upper extremity within and across conditions. Overall, participants showed their ability to synchronize to the music produced by the music therapist throughout conditions by demonstrating anticipation. Also, participants demonstrated some difficulty while synchronizing with lower extremity. Music therapy clinicians might benefit from knowledge of their own tempo inconsistencies to be able to synchronize with clients more effectively. More research is required to identify commonalities and differences in music synchronization measures between individuals with PD and healthy individuals during IAMT sessions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising temperature can affect forests negatively through its impact on insect pests. The present study focused on two invasive alien insect species (Dryocosmus kuriphilus and Leptoglossus occidentalis) to understand how rising temperature might affect their damage in Turkish forests. For D. kuriphilus, the timing of chestnut budburst, gall induction and emergence of its introduced parasitoid, Torymus sinensis, were monitored between 2015 and 2019, and each phenological event was compared annually with fluctuations in temperature to observe the parasitoid-host synchrony. For L. occidentalis, cumulative degree days (CDD) were calculated, and the possible number of generations produced in 2020 in different regions of Turkey were predicted. The CDD calculations were repeated under increasing temperature and different photoperiod-diapause induction scenarios. Evaluation of the monitoring data on the D. kuriphilus system showed that gall induction occurred at the same time as budburst, whereas T. sinensis emergence was independent from the budburst, and that the parasitoid-host synchrony was disrupted after the abnormally warm winter in 2018. The CDD calculations estimated that L. occidentalis produced one to five generations from north to south in 2020. They also suggested a significant increase in the number of generations in the southern Turkey under temperature increase scenarios. Including photoperiod as a time-limiting factor reduced the highest possible number of generations from five to two. In conclusion, rising temperature has a potential to threaten the biocontrol against D. kuriphilus, and it can increase voltinism in L. occidentalis.

Rhythmic patterns in interactive contexts characterize human behaviours such as conversational turn-taking. These timed patterns are also present in other animals, and often described as rhythm. Understanding fine-grained temporal adjustments in interaction requires complementary quantitative methodologies. Here, we showcase how vocal interactive rhythmicity in a non-human animal can be quantified using a multi-method approach. We record vocal interactions in harbour seal pups (Phoca vitulina) under controlled conditions. We analyse these data by combining analytical approaches, namely categorical rhythm analysis, circular statistics and time series analyses. We test whether pups' vocal rhythmicity varies across behavioural contexts depending on the absence or presence of a calling partner. Four research questions illustrate which analytical approaches are complementary versus orthogonal. For our data, circular statistics and categorical rhythms suggest that a calling partner affects a pup's call timing. Granger causality suggests that pups predictively adjust their call timing when interacting with a real partner. Lastly, the ADaptation and Anticipation Model estimates statistical parameters for a potential mechanism of temporal adaptation and anticipation. Our analytical complementary approach constitutes a proof of concept; it shows feasibility in applying typically unrelated techniques to seals to quantify vocal rhythmic interactivity across behavioural contexts. Context: Climate change is driving phenological shifts across landscapes, but uncoordinated shifts might cause a potential "phenological mismatch." There has been little consensus on the existence and magnitude of such a mismatch. The lack of agreement among studies can be attributed to the wide variety of definitions for the term "phenological mismatch," as well as the methods used to measure it. The lack of comparability among measures of phenological mismatch creates a challenge for conservation. Objectives: We proposed a novel theoretical framework to generalize existing measures of phenological mismatch and an approach to quantify the decoupling between phenology and the environment using the loss in predictive skill over time. We aimed to estimate the magnitude of phenological mismatch on large spatial scales and test the proposed predictive approach's ability to detect multiple types of phenological mismatch. Methods: We modeled historical climate-phenology coupling and quantified phenological mismatch as the deviation between observed and predicted phenology under climate change. First, we used two large empirical spatiotemporal datasets to estimate phenological mismatch in plant flowering phenology in the eastern United States and bird reproductive phenology in Finland. Historical climate-phenology coupling was modeled with spatial linear regression. Second, we conducted four simulation experiments representing different types of mismatch during climate change. We recovered simulated phenological mismatch by fitting a data-driven nonlinear model (Gaussian Process Empirical Dynamic Modeling) and predicting phenology. Results: In the eastern US, we found that advancing plant flowering phenology generally matched spring warming from 1895 to 2015, with seven out of the 19 species studied having significant phenological mismatches, with observed flowering time earlier than predictions even considering warming. A similar phenological mismatch was found in birds in Finland from 1975 to 2017, with the bird breeding season advancing more than expected in 21 out of the 36 species studied. In four simulation experiments, we were able to accurately recover the simulated phenological mismatches in the timing of events, pace of development, and intensity of activities, although with greater challenges in quantifying a mismatch in life history. Conclusions: Overall, these case studies show that our prediction-based measure effectively quantifies multiple types of phenological mismatch, providing a more generalizable and comparable measure of phenological mismatch across study systems and scales. This study will enable the investigation of phenological mismatch at large scales, improving understanding of the patterns and consequences of climate-change-induced phenological changes. We present a method to acquire 3D position measurements for decentralized target tracking with an asynchronous camera network. Cameras with known poses have fields of view with overlapping projections on the ground and 3D volumes above a reference ground plane. The purpose is to track targets in 3D space without constraining motion to a reference ground plane. Cameras exchange line-of-sight vectors and respective time tags asynchronously. From stereoscopy, we obtain the fused 3D measurement at the local frame capture instant. We use local decentralized Kalman information filtering and particle filtering for target state estimation to test our approach with only local estimation. Monte Carlo simulation includes communication losses due to frame processing delays. We measure performance with the average root mean square error of 3D position estimates projected on the image planes of the cameras. We then compare only local estimation to exchanging additional asynchronous communications using the Batch Asynchronous Filter and the Sequential Asynchronous Particle Filter for further fusion of information pairs' estimates and fused 3D position measurements, respectively. Although synchrony between the limbs is an often-cited feature of bimanual coordination, recent studies have also highlighted the small asynchronies that can occur. The visuo-motor demands of any bimanual task are considered central to the emergence of asynchrony, but the relationship between the two remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to address this issue. Hand and eye movements were measured in 19 participants, while they made either unimanual or bimanual reach-to-point (aiming) movements to targets presented on a touchscreen. Bimanual movements were either congruent (same-sized targets) or incongruent (different-sized targets). Resulting hand data showed many of the typical patterns of movement previously reported. While temporal coupling between the limbs remained largely evident for bimanual movements, small between-limb asynchronies were apparent and demonstrated clear associations with the competing precision requirements of the targets and related visual attention. Participants mainly directed their gaze towards the more difficult target with corresponding reaching movements demonstrating greater precision than for the easier target. Additionally, there was a reliable tendency for the hand reaching towards the more difficult target to lead. Importantly, it was the competing visuo-motor demands of individual movements rather than overall difficulty that resulted in greater between-limb asynchrony; accordingly, where both targets were small (i.e., the most difficult condition), asynchrony was significantly less pronounced than for incongruent bimanual conditions. The results show how the visuo-motor system balances its apparent drive for synchrony in coordinating bimanual movements with the competing demands that characterise the constituent unimanual movements. Portfolio effects (PEs) in ecology refer to the suite of phenomenon where the temporal variation of aggregate ecosystem properties (i.e., abundance) is lower than that of their ecosystem components. An example of this is where differential responses of species to environmental variation generate stability at higher levels of ecological organization (e.g., local community, metapopulation, metacommunity). Most of the research examining such PEs has focused on spatial or interannual variation of ecosystems; however, as global change continues to alter seasonality and ecosystem functioning, understanding the underlying food web structures that help maintain stability at multiple spatial and temporal scales is critical to managing ecological systems. Recent advances investigating diversity‐stability relationships has led to the development of frameworks that incorporate a metacommunity perspective which allows for the partitioning of PEs across organizational scales (i.e., local community, metapopulation, cross‐community, metacommunity) from local population dynamics (total). This partitioning yields insights into the mechanisms that generate observed PEs in nature. Here, we employed one of these recently developed frameworks on a temporally (1986–1999, 2008–2019) and spatially (five sampling stations, local communities) extensive data set of zooplankton abundance (e.g., density) within a large temperate lake to investigate how temporal (seasonal) and spatial (among site) PEs influence stability within the zooplankton metacommunity. We found that seasonal asynchrony of different zooplankton species within local communities and across communities generated the vast majority of stabilization, while spatial (i.e., metapopulation) dynamics were more synchronous and contributed little to overall system stability. Furthermore, significantly positive diversity‐asynchrony relationships at the total, local‐ and cross‐community scales were found as asynchrony was positively correlated with local Shannon diversity. Last, a comparison of PEs over the time periods, during which significant local and global changes (i.e., climate warming, invasive species) have occurred suggests that PEs may be eroding, as increasingly synchronous dynamics and declining diversity in recent years have led to a rise in metacommunity variability. We end by arguing for the critical importance of understanding seasonally driven stabilizing mechanisms as local and global changes threaten to fundamentally alter seasonal signals with potentially strong implications for the structures that lend stability to ecosystems. Climate change raises a serious threat to global entomofauna—the foundation of many ecosystems—by threatening species preservation and the ecosystem services they provide. Already, changes in climate—warming—are causing (i) sharp phenological mismatches among host–parasitoid systems by reducing the window of host susceptibility, leading to early emergence of either the host or its associated parasitoid and affecting mismatched species’ fitness and abundance; (ii) shifting arthropods’ expansion range towards higher altitudes, and therefore migratory pest infestations are more likely; and (iii) reducing biological control effectiveness by natural enemies, leading to potential pest outbreaks. Here, we provided an overview of the warming consequences on biodiversity and functionality of agroecosystems, highlighting the vital role that phenology plays in ecology. Also, we discussed how phenological mismatches would affect biological control efficacy, since an accurate description of stage differentiation (metamorphosis) of a pest and its associated natural enemy is crucial in order to know the exact time of the host susceptibility/suitability or stage when the parasitoids are able to optimize their parasitization or performance. Campaigns regarding landscape structure/heterogeneity, reduction of pesticides, and modelling approaches are urgently needed in order to safeguard populations of natural enemies in a future warmer world.
