Cette étude a déterminé la variation des teneurs en Ca, Mg, Fe et silice dans les feuilles des variétés Xaraes, Piata, Marandu et Locale de Brachiaria brizantha pour vérifier l’hypothèse selon laquelle les teneurs en minéraux susmentionnés de ces variétés au stades début, plein et fin tallage sont suffisantes en alimentation du bétail. Après culture dans un dispositif expérimental de blocs aléatoires complets et analyses au laboratoire, les résultats ont montré que les teneurs en Ca, Mg, Fe et silice de Brachiaria brizantha varient selon la variété et stade végétatif. Ces teneurs dans les différentes variétés et aux stades début, plein et fin tallage ont varié de 0,30 à 0,42 % pour Ca; de 0,20 à 0,39 % pour Mg; de 0,14 à 0,21 % pour Fe, et de 2,5 à 6,0 % pour la silice. L’analyse de variance indique qu’il existe des différences significatives entre les variétés et entre les stades végétatifs pour les teneurs en Ca, Mg, Fe et silice. Par rapport aux besoins du bétail, les teneurs en calcium, magnésium et fer enregistrées dans les variétés aux différents stades végétatifs sont suffisantes pour l’alimentation du bétail, tandis que les teneurs en silice ne sont pas préjudiciables pour le bétail, car inférieures à 10%. The presence of domestic animals is a key feature of the Neolithic. Their earliest presence in archaeological contexts across the European continent is often interpreted as reflecting farming practices. However, domestic animals often escape, survive, and become feral. Using the comparative example of colonial North America, this article's aim is to illustrate what happens when livestock are introduced to a new, continental temperate environment. Taking a dual historical and archaeological perspective, the author reiterates and elaborates on the suggestion that feral animals were almost certainly a feature of the European Neolithization process. L’élevage pastoral au Sahel est extrêmement dépendant des irrégularités climatiques, et particulièrement de la qualité de la saison des pluies qui conditionne la repousse des pâturages et le remplissage des points d’eau. Les éleveurs nomades et transhumants adaptent leurs stratégies de déplacement à l’état et à la disponibilité de ces ressources. Les outils de suivi de la sécurité alimentaire de ces territoires pastoraux doivent donc intégrer, en plus des données spatialisées sur la biomasse, des informations sur ces mouvements pastoraux et sur les facteurs qui les conditionnent. Pour accompagner les systèmes d’alerte locaux au Sahel, l’organisation non gouvernementale Action contre la Faim propose un modèle de vulnérabilité pastorale basé sur des données satellitaires acquises en temps réel et sur la connaissance des pratiques pastorales. Ce modèle permet d’alimenter en informations un système d’alerte précoce en identifiant les zones d’intérêt pastoral déficitaires en ressources plusieurs mois avant la période de soudure potentiellement problématique. La confrontation avec l’information concomitante collectée sur le terrain par des relais sentinelles permet une surveillance de la situation pastorale, contribuant au développement des infrastructures ou au déploiement de l’aide humanitaire.

L’étude a été menée dans la zone côtière du nord-ouest de l’Egypte afin d’explorer l’importance économique relative de la production de petits ruminants. Sur la base des ressources en eau, la zone d’étude a été divisée en trois sous-zones agro­écologiques (ZAE): a) la zone pluviale (ZP) à l’ouest, b) la zone sèche (ZC) au centre, et c) la zone irriguée (ZI) à l’est. La collecte des données a été effectuée au moyen d’enquêtes de terrain, à l’aide d’un questionnaire testé au préalable. La productivité a varié de 20,8 à 25,4 kg, et de 18,9 à 20,9 kg, respectivement chez les ovins et les caprins. La productivité des ovins et des caprins a été plus faible dans la ZC que dans les ZP ou ZI (p > 0,05). La production des petits ruminants a été rentable dans les différentes ZAE. Les rendements sur capi­tal investi dans la production ovine ont été de 22,3, 17,9 et 14,4 %, respectivement dans les ZI, ZP et ZC. Les données correspondantes pour la production caprine ont été respecti­vement de 16,5, 16,7 et 16,7 %. La contribution de l’élevage au revenu du ménage a varié de 40,8 à 71,6 % dans les ZAE. La comparaison des revenus provenant des cultures et du bétail dans la ZC a révélé que, alors que l’élevage représentait 71,6 % du revenu net total, la contribution des cultures n’a été que de 2,5–5 %. Dans le secteur de l’élevage, la contribu­tion des petits ruminants a été la plus élevée (63,4 %). Aider les agriculteurs à prendre conscience des avantages finan­ciers des petits ruminants peut les convaincre de considérer ces derniers comme une meilleure alternative à la produc­tion agricole en termes de génération de revenus. Ces résul­tats pourront probablement influer sur leur décision concer­nant l’allocation de leurs ressources limitées à des alternatives concurrentes.

Avec la croissance de la population urbaine mondiale, les rôles que pourraient jouer les agricultures urbaines dans les villes de demain posent question. L’Egypte, qui a connu une urbanisation très rapide au cours du siècle dernier, semble abriter une importante diversité d’exploitations urbaines et périurbaines. La mégalopole du Grand Caire, avec ses 20 millions d’habitants, ne fait pas exception et profite de la présence de fermes, dont une partie contribue à l’approvisionnement en lait de la ville. Relevant de l’économie informelle, la littérature est presque inexistante quant à leurs structures, fonctionnements, dynamiques et perspectives. Cet article décrit les principaux systèmes familiaux du secteur laitier informel du Caire, afin de mieux cerner leurs contraintes et leurs opportunités. Les données collectées au cours d’entretiens auprès de 73 éleveurs du Caire ont permis de réaliser une typologie de ces systèmes en se basant sur leurs caractéristiques structurelles, techniques, familiales et économiques. Deux grandes catégories ont été identifiées : les agroéleveurs intégrant agriculture et élevage, et les éleveurs hors-sol. Chacune de ces catégories a été divisée en deux types, à partir d’un gradient de la taille. Dans tous les cas, la satisfaction des besoins alimentaires familiaux a primé. Le lait de bufflonne était le lait le plus produit et la commercialisation des surplus de lait frais passait par des circuits courts. Bien que rendant des services à la ville, ces exploitations affrontaient de nombreuses contraintes (coûts élevés des intrants agricoles, pression foncière, faible disponibilité des terres agricoles, parmi d’autres) qui remettaient en question leur subsistance à moyen terme.

The adoption of the cattle feedlot system allows greater control of costs, however, the survey of spending must be well planned. This study aimed to analyze and evaluate the economic feasibility of producing a feedlot beef cattle in Auriflama/SP. Input costs have integrated 85.14%, however obtained profitability index 68.55% and positive net present value from the 4th year. [es] Se ha estudiado la gestión tradicional de una dehesa boyal localizada en un área montañosa del centro de España, en el municipio madrileño de Puebla de la Sierra, y sus efectos sobres las características del bosque. La dehesa, con 336 hectáreas, tiene una posición estratégica dentro del término municipal, por su proximidad al casco urbano y su localización intermedia respecto a los terrenos comunales más alejados. Está compuesta principalmente de robles melojos (Quercus pirenaica), con la presencia puntual de otras especies de gran interés geobotánico como el roble albar (Quercus petraea). Los precedentes más antiguos de la gestión de la dehesa tienen su origen en la Edad Media, época en la que se sientan las bases y generalizan dos formas de aprovecha- miento del bosque que perdurarán hasta la actualidad: el monte bajo y el monte hueco. La dehesa de Puebla fue utilizada fundamentalmente en régimen de monte hueco llegando las tradiciones de uso hasta el siglo XX. Las informaciones de hombres y mujeres de edad superior a los 70 años ha permitido reconstruir esta gestión tradicional. En el trabajo se analiza el aprovechamiento estacional de la dehesa por los distintos tipos de ganado (vacuno, lanar y cabrío). Se describe la forma de podar los árboles y las reglas que regulaban las podas para las distintas especies arbóreas. También se discuten los efectos que la gestión tradicional ha tenido sobre las características del bosque, tanto en estructura como en composición. Finalmente se analiza el impacto del uso tradicional del bosque en la conservación de este espacio. Se destaca la importancia de un modelo de gestión que mantiene la estructura original y permite la permanencia de un buen número de características de naturalidad (presencia de grandes árboles, diversidad, heterogeneidad, etc.). On décrira la manière d'émonder les arbres et le règlement établit par l'émondage de chaque espèce. On discutera aussi à propos des effets de la gestion traditionnelle sur les caractéristiques du bois en ce qui concerne sa structure et sa composition. Enfin, on analysera l'utilité de l'usage traditionnel du bois pour la conservation de cet espace. On focalisera sur l'importance de ce modèle de gestion, n'étant excessivement transformateur de la nature originaire, pour la conservation d'un grand nombre de caractéristiques de naturalité (présence de grands arbres, diversité, hétérogénéité, etc.) D'ailleurs, on remarque la nécessité actuelle d'intégrer les formes de profit traditionnel ( représenté par la population actuelle), l'appui scientifique ( pour améliorer les techniques de conservation de cet espace) et l'usage culturel et éducatif comme des piliers basiques de la gestion de cet espace naturel de grand intérêt biologique et culturel.

African animal trypanosomosis, transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) is a major constraint limiting the optimal utilization of land for agricultural production in tsetse-infested areas of Ghana. In the last 50 years various workers have made attempts at mapping the distribution of tsetse flies and the disease they transmit with a view to instituting appropriate control measures. Due to the increasing human population and agricultural expansion, there has been a retreat of the morsitans group of tsetse flies into protected areas. From the standpoint of livestock production, therefore, members of the palpalis group remain the most important vectors of trypanosomosis as they are able to persist even in areas of intense land use. The optimal exploitation of trypanotolerance as a means of trypanosomoses control is hampered by increased crossbreeding with trypanosusceptible breeds. Although the incidence of sleeping sickness has decreased drastically over the last decades, the current status of the disease has not been investigated. This paper takes a retrospective look at the problem of tsetse and trypanosomosis in Ghana, assesses the current disease situation and highlights some research perspectives that are relevant to the sustainable control of the disease.

The pasture value of Sudanese fallows was determined for the Sare Yero Bana soil of High Casamance in Senegal by studying fodder diversity and the global quality index. Fodder diversity was higher in young fallow rangelands. In old fallows, on the other hand, species with low pastoral value were relatively more abundant. The global quality index of rangelands markedly increased in fallow first years, peaked the third year because of grass abundance and sparse woody cover, then decreased between years 5 and 17. The decrease of the fodder quality of fallow rangelands was even more pronounced when estimating the net pastoral value. The cattle carrying capacity of young fallows improved when ponderation of “qualified” fodder was taken into account, because the amount of unused fodder could be reduced by 50%. The global quality index is therefore an essential indicator of rangelands fodder quality, which can be used without the need for chemical and/or bromatological analyses.

Reliable information on numbers of domestic animals are essential on a continent-wide as well as on a regional scale. This knowledge facilitates to guide and design the development policy of animal production and, also, to propose financial support from donors. Reliable information about animal numbers are scarce in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, it is necessary to proceed to countings using reliable methods, which have been already recently developed for counting game populations. There is an abundant literature with regard to game counting which is not the case for counting domestic animals. This paper presents a bibliographical review of methods employed and operations carried out to count domestic populations. Counting methods are presented and their statistical and operational principle described. The results obtained during various operations carried out mainly in sub-Saharan Africa are presented and discussed. The main techniques applied are direct and indirect counts, ground and aerial counts, exhaustive or by sampling counts. The strip transect method and the indirect methods for estimating animal abundance by ground investigation are largely described. The line transect and capture-mark-recapture methods are briefly presented. The choice of methods and existing means to count domestic animals is discussed at the end of the paper. New methodological approaches are also indicated.

La démographie est un déterminant essentiel de la production des cheptels de ruminants domestiques élevés en conditions extensives tropicales. L’esti- mation des taux démographiques (taux de reproduction, de mortalité et d’ex- ploitation des animaux) est nécessaire pour évaluer l’effet d’interventions zootechniques sur la production des cheptels. Cette estimation est cependant particulièrement difficile et contraignante. Les systèmes d’élevage traditionnels posent des problèmes spécifiques et importants pour la collecte des données dans les troupeaux. La présente synthèse fait le point sur les méthodes d’enquête utilisées en milieu villageois pour estimer les taux démographiques des ruminants : les suivis individuels d’animaux, les suivis de troupeaux sans identification individuelle des animaux et les enquêtes rétrospectives transversales. Des perspectives de recherche sont proposées pour améliorer les méthodes, notamment dans le cadre des suivis nécessaires pour prendre en compte la variabilité interannuelle des taux démographiques.

Domestic animals represent an extremely useful model for linking genotypic and phenotypic variation. One approach involves identifying allele frequency differences between populations, using FST, to detect selective sweeps. While simple to calculate, FST may generate false positives due to aspects of population history. This prompted the development of hapFLK, a metric that measures haplotype differentiation while accounting for the genetic relationship between populations. The focus of this paper was to apply hapFLK in sheep with available SNP50 genotypes. The hapFLK approach identified a known selective sweep on chromosome 10 with high precision. Further, five regions were identified centered on genes with strong evidence for positive selection ( COL1A2, NCAPG, LCORL, and RXFP2). Estimation of global FST revealed many more genomic regions, providing empirical data in support of published simulation-based results concerning elevated type I error associated with FST when it is being used to characterize sweep regions. The findings, while conducted using sheep SNP data, are likely to be applicable across those domestic animal species that have undergone artificial selection for desirable phenotypic traits. The emergence of the middle class in countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China is resulting in increasing global demand for animal-based food products. This increase represents a unique opportunity for Canadian livestock producers to export their products to new markets and expand Canada's reputation as a global provider of safe and highest quality food items. This article has two major themes. First, current Canadian contributions to livestock genomics in the cattle and swine industries are outlined. Second, important future opportunities are discussed, including the high throughput collection of phenotypic data, development of environmentally friendly livestock, emergence of decision support software, and the use of Web 2.0. Through the use of genomic technologies, livestock producers can not only ensure that the nutritional demands of Canada are secured, but also play a pivotal role in ensuring the rest of the world is fed as well. Furthermore, investment through initiatives led by Genome Canada has ensured that Canada is favorably positioned to contribute cutting-edge solutions to meet this global challenge. Ultimately, genomic-based innovations will enable producers to increase efficiency, lower production costs, decrease the use of prophylactics, and limit the expenditure of resources. The association between the polymorphisms at different gene loci and milk traits is studied in many cattle breeds. Our study aimed to perform genotypization at STAT 5A locus in Romanian Black Spotted cattle (BNR = Bălţată eu Negru Românească), individuals with big milk production (BNR-M) and small milk production (BNR-S), in order to identify the gene and allele frequency. In order to perform the genotypization at STAT 5A locus in cattle, specific primer sets were used (some described by literature, other new synthesized). They allowed the amplification of exons from genes where mutations were identified. The genetic analysis was performed using PCR-RFLP. For each amplification products possible to be obtained from polymorphic regions, based on mutations, there were performed theoretic restriction maps with NEBcutter V2.0. The effect of administering feedlot cattle subtherapeutic levels of chlortetracycline (CT) or CT and therapeutic levels of oxytetracycline (CT-OX) on resistance genotypes in Escherichia coli was investigated. Detection of genes tet(A), tet(B), and tet(C) encoded by tetracycline-resistant isolates (CT, N = 77; CT-OX, N = 99) was performed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Prevalence of tet(A) was similar in isolates across treatment regimes; however, prevalence of tet(B) was lower (18% versus 34%; P < 0.05) and tet(C) was higher (46% versus 28%; P < 0.05) in CT isolates compared with CT-OX isolates. To further characterize selection of resistance genotypes in E. coli, a group of intermediately tetracycline-resistant E. coli ( N = 48) was analyzed. The tet(C) gene was present in 92% of these isolates. Copies of tet(C) transcripts, analyzed by real-time PCR, indicated that upregulation did not occur in tetracycline-resistant isolates when compared with intermediately resistant isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline were also tested on isolates with different resistance genes. The minimum inhibitory concentration was dependent on the tetracycline analogue and the nature of encoded resistance. These data indicate that tetracycline analogues should not be used interchangeably to evaluate resistance and that prevalence of resistance genes in E. coli can vary according to the tetracycline analogue administered to cattle. The article presents a study on herd composition, mortality, milk yield and reproductive performance of cattle in tsetse-challenged and tsetse-free areas in Dawuro Zone in southern Ethiopia. The study shows no significant changes in herd size, but the proportions of female calves and lactating or dry pregnant cows were significantly higher and those of dry non pregnant cows significantly lower in the tsetse-free areas than in the challenged ones. It concludes that tsetse-challenge and associated trypanosomiasis affect herd composition and performance.

Objective To investigate the association between environmental exposure to livestock and incidence of diarrhoea among Vietnamese children. Methods A population-based cohort of 353 525 individuals, living in 75 828 households in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, with baseline data covering geo-referenced information on demography, socio-economic status and household animals was investigated. Geographic information system was applied to calculate the density of livestock. The data were linked to hospitalized diarrhoea cases of children under 5 years recorded at two hospitals treating patients from the area as inpatients in the study area. Results Overall, 3116 children with diarrhoea were hospitalized during the study period. The incidence of diarrhoea hospitalization was 60.8/1000 child-years. Male gender, age <2 years, higher number of household members and lack of tap water were significantly associated with an increased risk of diarrhoea. There was no evidence that ownership of livestock increased the risk of diarrhoea. In spatial analysis, we found no evidence that a high density of any animals was associated with an increased risk of diarrhoea. Conclusions Exposure to animals near or in households does not seem to constitute a major risk for diarrhoea in children under the age of 5 in Vietnam. Public health interventions to reduce childhood diarrhoea burden should focus on well-recognized causes such as sanitation, personal hygiene, access to adequate clean water supply and vaccination. The article presents a study on the comparison for the techniwues used for detection of blood parasite Theileria annulata in cattle in Pakistan. The authors carry out the study to investigate the prevalence of Theileria annulata in cattle from the Peshawar and Kohat districts in the province of Khyber Pukhtoon Khwa. They compare the parasite detection techniques PCR amplification and Giesma stainining, and found out the PCR amplification is a much more sensitive tool. They state that no significant risk factors observed associated with the spread of the disease.

The article presents a study on the prevalence of cryptosporidium infections, a type of protozoan infection affecting livestock around the world, in one-humped camels in the northwestern region of Iran. The authors carried out the study in different age groups of dromedary camels in the region using modified Ziehl-Neelsen (MZN) staining under light microscopy. They state that there are no differences in the prevalence of the infection between male and female camels. They note that the disease poses a problem in camel husbandry, as well as public health in the region.

The article discusses a study on using a nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) test to detect bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) on individual and pooled samples of calf sera, bovine plasmas and bovine ear notches. The NASBA test was compared with the antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Two additional positive bovine plasmas were detected by NASBA compared with ELISA. Only one positive sample was detected by the NASBA test among 201 individual ear notches from cows with unknown BVDV status. The findings confirmed the accuracy of using NASBA with the EasyQ Analyzer and the EasyMAG extraction in BVDV screening.

Abstract: Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic disease caused by M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) that affects several animal species, and some studies have suggested that there may be a relationship between Crohn''s disease and PTB. Significant aspects of PTB pathogenesis are not yet completely understood, such as the role of macrophages. Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1 (NRAMP1) and the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) molecules have shown nonspecific effects against several intracellular pathogens residing within macrophages. However, these molecules have been scarcely studied during natural infection with MAP. In this work, changes in NRAMP1 and iNOS expression were surveyed by immunohistochemistry in tissue samples from MAP-infected cattle and healthy controls. Our findings show strong specific immunolabeling against both NRAMP1 and iNOS molecules, throughout granulomatous PTB-compatible lesions in ileum and ileocaecal lymph nodes from paratuberculous cattle compared with uninfected controls, suggesting a relationship between the expression of these molecules and the pathogenesis of PTB disease. The article provides information about a study on the role of blood transfusion in treating cattle with severe Leptospirosis. It specifically aims to determine the efficacy of a whole blood transfusion as an adjunct to antibiotic and B vitamins in cattle with leptospirosis. The researchers evaluated 42 cattle shedding urinary spirochetes and manifesting clinical symptoms of Leptospirosis. Based on the results, it was concluded that the administration of dihydrostreptomycin-penicillin can remove the urinary shedding of spirochetes. Moreover, blood transfusion is said to have helped in repairing the present collapses, like anemia, hemorrhagic diathesis, and septicemia.

Abstract: Mastitis is a prevalent disease in dairy cows. Gram-negative bacteria, which express the pro-inflammatory molecule lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are responsible for the majority of acute clinical cases of mastitis. Previous studies have identified differential susceptibility of human and bovine endothelial cells (EC) to the pro-inflammatory and injury-inducing effects of LPS. The Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 signaling pathway, which is activated by LPS, has been well studied in humans, but not in ruminants. Human myeloid differentiation-factor 88 (MyD88) and TIR-domain containing adaptor protein (TIRAP) are critical proteins in the LPS-induced NF-κB and apoptotic signaling pathways. To assess the role of the bovine orthologs of these proteins in bovine TLR-4 signaling, dominant-negative constructs were expressed in bovine EC, and LPS-induced NF-κB activation and apoptosis evaluated. The results from this study indicate that bovine MyD88 and TIRAP play functional roles in transducing LPS signaling from TLR-4 to downstream effector molecules involved in NF-κB activation, and that TIRAP promotes apoptotic signaling. The article discusses the results of a study which attempted to establish a baseline data on the status of cystic echinococcosis (CE). The study was conducted at Mekelle city municipality abattoir, Northern Ethiopia from March 2006 to July 2006. The methodology involves ante- and post-mortem inspection and hydatid cyst characterization. Based on the findings of the study, it is noted that the proportion of animals with fertile, viable cysts is a significant indicator of the relevance of a species as an intermediate host.

Abstract: Moraxella bovis is the etiologic agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, the most important ocular disease affecting cattle worldwide. The severity of the cases varied from eyes that exhibited mild signs to severe clinical cases with profuse lacrimation, conjunctival swelling, corneal opacity, and ulceration. Although the mortality is low, there is a high morbidity and important economic loss in terms of significant reduction in production. This paper examines aspects such as the pathogenesis of the disease and the mechanisms by which this unique bacterium is able to disrupt the corneal epithelium and cause infection. Improper animal-mortality disposal may allow pathogenic microorganisms to spread diseases in soil, plants, animals, and to humans; and resulting odor reduces the quality of life for neighbors. Health hazards posed by neglect in carcass disposal would be pronounced in the event of a natural catastrophe, disease outbreak or intentional depopulation of herds or flocks. Conventional rendering systems have been utilized for the last two decades to convert various animal carcasses to different products. However, considerations regarding prion diseases will further shape the rendering industry. New rendering technologies that convert suspected prion-infected animal tissues into tallow and protein for use as a biofuel and fertilizer, respectively, are beginning to emerge. This paper reviews the rendering industry and new methods for carcass rendering to produce safe and economically valuable products while minimizing impacts on public safety and environmental quality. Abstract: Country lacks indigenous diagnostic kits against Johne''s disease in animals. Indigenous ELISA and IS 900 PCR kits, originally developed for goats and sheep, have been adapted for screening of lactating cows. Multiple diagnostic tests were used to screen 26 lactating dairy cows against Johne''s disease. Milk ELISA was evaluated with fecal culture, milk culture and fecal PCR. Of the 26 samples from lactating cows, 84.6, 96.1, 88.4 and 23.0% were positive in fecal culture, milk culture, m-ELISA and m-PCR, respectively. Comparatively milk sediment and milk fat culture detected 84.6 and 76.9% cows positive, respectively. Comparatively fecal culture and milk culture detected 84.6 and 96.1% cows positive, respectively. M-ELISA detected 11.5, 0.0, 11.5, 61.0 and 15.3%, cows as negative, suspected, low positive, positive and strong positive, respectively. There was good correlation between milk and fecal culture with m-ELISA. Three negative cows in m-ELISA were also detected in milk and fecal culture. Of the 26 decontaminated fecal samples, 23.0% cows were positive using specific IS 900 f-PCR. Comparative evaluation of m-ELISA with fecal and milk culture showed agreement in 80.7 and 84.6% cows, respectively. Sensitivity of m-ELISA with respect to fecal and culture was 90.9 and 95.6%, respectively. Comparative evaluation of four tests (milk culture, fecal culture, m-ELISA and f-PCR) showed that only 15.3% cows were detected in all the four tests. In three tests (fecal and milk culture and m-ELISA), 57.6% cows were detected positive. None of the cow was exclusively detected in f-PCR. Of the four diagnostic tests used milk culture was most sensitive (96.15%), followed by fecal culture (86.6%), m-ELISA (76.9%) and IS 900 PCR (23.0%) for the diagnosis of bovine Johne''s disease (BJD). Milk ELISA detected only one cow extra, which was negative in milk culture. In view of the simplicity, rapidity and efficacy present milk ELISA kit employing soluble protoplasmic antigen from native Map ‘Bison type’ genotype of goat origin can be reliable for screening of bovine population against Johne''s disease in India. Les recherches empiriques faites dans le nord de la Côte-d'Ivoire permettent d'étudier les possibilités et les limites de l'emploi du fumier de bovins, vues sous un angle économique. Cette étude est basée sur des mesures de temps de travail, des analyses de la composition du fumier, des études de sols ainsi que des études comparatives de rendement. Les résultats montrent que, lorsqu'il y a suffisamment de surfaces cultivables disponibles, la fumure n'est supérieure à la jachère traditionnelle que si l'on dispose de techniques susceptibles de réduire le temps de travail, de transport du fumier, en charrette par exemple. Dans les régions à forte densité, au contraire, là où le raccourcissement du temps de jachère provoque une chute du rendement et une érosion accrue, l'emploi de tout le fumier disponible prend tout son sens et s'avère indispensable.

Les facteurs de la croissance de jeunes taurillons peuls exploitant des pâturages annuels sahéliens à Selibaby (Mauritanie) ont été mesurés sur une période de 21 mois. Simultanément, les conditions climatiques et les ressources fourragères ont été étudiées. Pour chaque saison, l'auteur a calculé des équations de régression multiple reliant entre eux ces paramètres. Les performances de saison sèche (variations quotidiennes de poids mesurées mensuellement) sont fortement influencées par la durée de la saison sèche, la disponibilité en fourrages ligneux et par la distribution d'un complément azoté. La complémentation alimentaire en saison sèche chaude et pendant la période de soudure peut être rentable pour les animaux devant être commercialisés. Cependant, la croissance compensatrice observée pendant la saison des pluies sur les animaux non complémentés réduit l'intérêt de cette pratique. Des simulations par des modèles mathématiques ont montré que les performances de saison sèche ne sont pas améliorées par une diminution de la charge, tant que la biomasse disponible est supérieure à 300 kg de matière sèche par hectare. Les performances de saison humide sont influencées par la disponibilité en fourrages et leur teneur en matière azotée. La croissance de saison des pluies pourrait être améliorée en accroissant la dispersion du bétail, et en diminuant la charge appliquée aux pâturages en fin de saison humide. Des recherches importantes sont à entreprendre.

Les taux de matières sèches, de matières azotées brutes, de cellulose et de cendres constituent les éléments de calcul de la valeur bromatologique des fourrages. A partir de résultats expérimentaux, les tables hollandaises donnent directement la valeur bromatologique d'un kg de matières sèches de fourrage en fonction du taux de cellulose et de cendres pour la valeur énergétique et en fonction du taux de matières azotées brutes pour les matières azotées digestibles. Par analogie à l'unité gros bétail (U.G.B.) des pays tempérés, un animal de référence de 250 kg pour les pays tropicaux peut être adopté comme Unité-Bétail tropical (U.B.T.). La consommation journalière théorique étant évaluée à 2,5 kg de matière sèche pour 100 kg de poids vif, les besoins de l'U.B.T. sont rapportés au kg de matière sèche ingérée sous le nom d'Equivalent-Rati on exprimé en unité fourragère et matière azotée digestible. Le dépouillement de plus de 500 analyses bromatologiques de plantes fourragères tropicales a mis en évidence: l'importance des pâturages aériens comme complément de la ration en matières azotées digestibles au cours de la saison sèche tant sur steppes que sur savanes; l'importance périodique des espèces d'appoint pour assurer la nourriture du bétail sur steppes; - le nombre limité d'espèces assurant une ration d'entretien pendant une longue période sur steppes; - l'importance du temps de croissance pour les espèces vivaces de savanes, la valeur bromatologique des repousses dépendant plus de ce facteur que de la date de récolte

Seuls sont envisagés ici les Rhipicephalus exophiles, dont les adultes infestent le bétail et le grand gibier dans les formations végétales ouvertes. Après un rappel sur l'habitat des tiques et sur la phytogéographie de la sous-région, la distribution de chaque espèce est brièvement établie, en fonction de la végétation et des courbes isohyètes.
