Virtual reality (VR) technologies have experienced rapid development in recent years, leading to low‐cost consumer smartphone VR systems (with 3DoF tracking). One issue with the smartphone VR systems, which rely on existing generic displays, is simulator sickness, which arises due to factors that induce sensory conflicts, especially related to visual–vestibular conflict. Display update latency with respect to head position is one of the most widely implicated factors for simulator sickness. However, studies of the effects of latency on simulator sickness have given inconsistent results. Moreover, these studies were done on systems with latencies much higher than current smartphone VR systems. Therefore, it is hard to generalize those results to today's VR systems. To address this, we present in this paper a study on the effect of latency on simulator sickness for latency levels around 20 ms. We present a systematic evaluation of simulator sickness in smartphone VR, testing for a difference between conditions with latencies of 18 and 28 ms, on a task of natural game playing in smartphone VR. We noted differences between individuals in their reported simulator sickness for the two latency conditions but no sample‐wide significant difference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eyebox volume is a key design parameter in the optical design of augmented and virtual reality optics. The extent of the eyebox volume determines the experience of a user in seeing the entire virtual magnified image. Furthermore, a 3D description of eyebox facilitates the design of augmented and virtual reality products for a population of users. We define 3D eyebox and discuss visualization approaches to communicate it within interdisciplinary product design groups focused on research and development of augmented and virtual reality optics. Near‐eye light field displays based on integral imaging through a microlens array provide attractive features like ultra‐compact volume and freedom of the vergence‐accommodation conflict to head‐mounted displays with virtual or augmented reality functions. To enable optimal design and analysis of such systems, it is desirable to have a physical model that incorporates all factors that affect the image formation, including diffraction, aberration, defocusing, and pixel size. Therefore, in this study, using the fundamental Huygens‐Fresnel principle and the Arizona eye model with adjustable accommodation, we develop an image formation model that can numerically calculate the retinal light field image with near‐perfect accuracy, and experimentally verify it with a prototype system. Next, based on this model, the visual resolution is analyzed for different field of views (FOVs). As a result, a rapid resolution decay with respect to FOV caused by off‐axis aberration is demonstrated. Finally, resolution variations as a function of image depth are analyzed based on systems with different central depth planes. Significantly, the resolution decay is revealed to plateau when the image depth is large enough, which is different from real‐image type light field displays. An image formation model with near‐perfect accuracy is developed for near‐eye light field displays by incorporating all factors affecting the image quality: diffraction, aberration, defocusing, pixel size, etc.Model‐based optimizations are performed to enhance the resolution from 6.9 to 15.4 PPD.The influences of field of view and image depth are quantitatively analyzed. In order to create a satisfying experience with near‐eye displays, the content must be adapted to be legible on the display used. New displays are using subpixel arrangements that can limit the minimum resolvable feature size to something greater than with the conventional RGB stripe arrangement. We conducted an experiment to measure the minimum and preferred size of text in two virtual reality (VR) displays systems and find that the text size is display limited. We then measure several displays with different pixel arrangements to determine whether the subpixel arrangement could impact legibility. We propose several Fourier metrics that can be computed from the measured data to categorize the capability of the display and describe a framework for selecting the appropriate content from a set of discrete tiers. For AR/VR systems, new subpixel arrangements can limit detail visibility compared with a display with RGB stripe arrangement. This paper describes work assessing the resolution for displays with nonconventional pixel arrangements and the associated artifacts. The design uses a white OLED with color filter structure for high density pixelization and an n‐type LTPS backplane for faster response time than mobile phone displays. The exponential growth in digital technology is leading us to a future in which all things and all people are connected all the time, something we refer to as The Infinite Network (TIN), which will cause profound changes in every industry. Here, we focus on the impact it will have in healthcare. TIN will change the essence of healthcare to a data-driven continuous approach as opposed to the event-driven discrete approach used today. At a micro or individual level, smart sensing will play a key role, in the form of embedded sensors, wearable sensors, and sensing from smart medical devices. At a macro or aggregate level, healthcare will be provided by Intelligent Telehealth Networks that evolve from the telehealth networks that are available today. Traditional telemedicine has delivered remote care to patients in the area where doctors are not readily available, but has not achieved at large scale. New advanced networks will deliver care at a much larger scale. The long-term future requires intelligent hybrid networks that combine artificial intelligence with human intelligence to provide continuity of care at higher quality and lower cost than is possible today. Light field capture and display technologies have been rapidly emerging in the past decade. The high dimensional design space of light field systems, however, imposes new challenges for end to end system design and evaluation. We discuss design principles for task specific light field camera systems and outline how such principles can be applied to or need to be modified for the design of personal light field displays.
