Abstract

This paper explores the design of visualizations that support mandated organizational compliance processes. We draw on the research literature to show how visualizations can operate as effective user interfaces for complex, distributed processes. We argue that visualizations can reduce the complexity of such processes, making them easier to manage, and can facilitate the communication and collaboration that are critical to supporting compliance. We describe the design and pilot deployment of a visualization that supports the IBM Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance process, discussing design alternatives, the final design, its deployment, and lessons learned. Abstract

The coming ubiquity of handheld devices and e-commerce will offer many new design and application opportunities for human-computer interaction, many of them in “everyday” domains. This article reports on the iterative design of a handheld application for one such domain, grocery shopping. Our goal was to produce a solution for home ordering of groceries using a PDA. The article focuses on the evolution of the application design through a process that alternated design activities with formative evaluations in the field. Abstract

Now that a number of industrial training boards are known to be re-appraising their levy and grant policies, it is perhaps an opportune moment to explain the practice and policy of the ESITB in this regard. We have described in our Annual Reports and in our own publications how this policy has evolved over the years. There is every indication that the policy which we have adopted is the right one for our industry. It may be that some other training boards will find it possible to move in the direction of this policy, as the companies which they cover begin, in compliance with their board's recommendations, to carry out training to a common pattern. So far however we have not thought it right to advocate a system which evolved mainly from the particular circumstances in which we found ourselves; circumstances which applied in few other industries. Abstract

Hypoparathyroidism can present many years after thyroidectomy and symptoms may be non-specific. Hypocalcaemia may cause a variety of physical and mental symptoms and the diagnosis is easily overlooked with serious and potentially fatal consequences.
