Abstract

In risk theory, financial asset returns often follow heavy-tailed distributions. Investors and risk managers used to compare risk measures as the value at risk or tail value at risk in order over the whole confidence levels to avoid the exposure to to large risks. In this paper we analyze the comparison between tail values at risk from a confidence level and beyond which is a reasonable criterion when we are focused on large losses or simply we cannot give a complete ordering over all the confidence levels. A family of stochastic orders indexed by $p_0\in(0,1)$ is proposed. We study their properties and connections with other classical criteria as the increasing convex and tail convex orders and we rank some parametrical families of distributions. 3. Performance of Mathematics Students Using Video Learning in Flipped and Flipped Collaborative Learning Settings

Abstract

Due to rapid technological advancement that continues to permeate almost all facets of the education sector, video learning has been explored to enhance performance, but most researchers do not incorporate flipped classroom in mathematical videos, which affects the teaching and learning of the subject in Nigeria. This study checked the effectiveness of video learning in flipped and flipped collaborative classroom on mathematics students' achievement and retention. Using a randomized controlled trial with repeated measures approach, 70 senior secondary school students were purposively sampled from two private secondary schools in Gombe State, Nigeria, out of which they were randomly assigned into two experimental groups: video learning flipped classroom and video learning flipped collaborative classroom (VLFCC). Data was obtained using a 30-item mathematics achievement test, which was validated and pilot-tested (r=0.93). Results were computed using descriptive statistics and two-way mixed design repeated measures analysis of variance. Findings revealed that while the students' within subject performance improved tremendously in the post-test after the four-week treatment, the students in VLFCC performed better in both achievement (F[1, 69]=1,576.362, p=0.000, effect size of ([partial eta-squared]) of 0.954) and retention (F[[subscript 1, 69]]=114. 119, p=0.000, with an effect size ([partial eta-squared]) of 0.785. The finding has some implications for it exposes mathematics teachers, researchers, and policy makers to the credence of deploying video learning in flipped collaborative classroom to improve students' performance by engaging students in collaborative learning in addition to watching pre-class videos, where students discuss in small groups in order to learn through observation, imitation, repetition and behavior modeling, thus making them to learn at their pace in order to construct their own knowledge.

4. From Lived Experiences to Social Activism: Latino Fraternity Brothers Critical Service to the Latinx Community

Abstract

Colleges and universities are seeing growth of Latinx students actively engaged in Greek life. In this study, six Latino participants share their testimonios as members of different Chapters of a Latinx Greek Letter Organization (LGLO) nestled within Predominantly White Institutions located in the state of Georgia, USA. Informed by LatCrit theory, this qualitative study uses member's testimonios to shed light on their varied and sometimes politically charged and racist lived experiences. The researchers draw on these experiences to show how the LGLO supported these members' character and leadership development and their desire and commitment to critical service and socially just causes.

5. Colombian University Students' Experiences as Users of the English Language during International Mobility

Abstract

This exploratory case study analyzes Colombian university students' experiences as English users during international mobility. Data collected through surveys and interviews were examined based on content analysis and principles of grounded theory. The students' self-perceived English proficiency and communicative performance before and during international mobility were analyzed, while challenging areas were identified. The results evidence that mobility students have insufficient levels of English proficiency to engage in academic and social activities due to inadequate production skills and a lack of practice. The students also perceive university academic English opportunities for practice as basic, and they underutilize practice spaces. Nonetheless, they highlight that active engagement in autonomous language exposure and developed interpersonal skills positively impact their perception of language performance.

6. Effect of Game-Based Learning on Educational Technology Students' Performance: A Case of Simple Repeated Measures Approach

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic kick-started a new paradigm shift in the way and manner teaching and learning takes place on the global scale due to the lockdown that succeeded in shutting down school activities. As a result, most institutions turned to technology supported e-learning as against the traditional face-to-face teaching and learning in order to cover for lost time. This study therefore tested the effectiveness of game-based learning on students' performance in educational technology. Using a simple repeated measures design, 24 students participated in this study. Using an Educational Technology Achievement Test (ETAT), which was validated and pilot-tested to obtain data, the students were given two separate pre-tests before the commencement of the treatment as well as two different post-tests after the treatment. Data were computed using a mixed design repeated-measures ANOVA. Findings revealed that game-based learning significantly improved students' performance to a large extent (F[subscript (3, 69)] = 170.960; p < 0.05) with an effect size ([partial eta-squared]) of 0.881. The study has some implications for Nigerian teachers and researchers in Educational Technology and Science-related fields on the need to incorporate game-based learning given that it has what it takes to improve students' performance.

Abstract

The nature of the close-in rocky planet 55 Cnc e is puzzling despite having been observed extensively. Its optical and infrared occultation depths show temporal variability, in addition to a phase curve variability observed in the optical. We wish to explore the possibility that the variability originates from the planet being in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance, thus showing different sides during occultations. We proposed and were awarded Cycle 1 time at the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to test this hypothesis. JWST/NIRCam observed five occultations (secondary eclipses), of which four were observed within a week, of the planet simultaneously at 2.1 and 4.5 {\mu}m. While the former gives band-integrated photometry, the latter provides a spectrum between 3.9-5.0 {\mu}m. We find that the occultation depths in both bandpasses are highly variable and change between a non-detection (-5 +/- 6 ppm and 7 +/- 9 ppm) to 96 +/- 8 ppm and 119 (+34) (-19) ppm at 2.1 {\mu}m and 4.5 {\mu}m, respectively. Interestingly, the variations in both bandpasses are not correlated and do not support the 3:2 spin-orbit resonance explanation. The measured brightness temperature at 4.5 {\mu}m varies between 873-2256 K and is lower than the expected dayside temperature of bare rock with no heat re-distribution (2500 K) which is indicative of an atmosphere. Our atmospheric retrieval analysis of occultation depth spectra at 4.5 {\mu}m finds that different visits statistically favour various atmospheric scenarios including a thin outgassed CO/CO2 atmosphere and a silicate rock vapour atmosphere. Some visits even support a flat line model. The observed variability could be explained by stochastic outgassing of CO/CO2, which is also hinted by retrievals. Abstract

The recent inference of sulphur dioxide (SO$_2$) in the atmosphere of the hot ($\sim$1100 K), Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b from near-infrared JWST observations suggests that photochemistry is a key process in high temperature exoplanet atmospheres. This is due to the low ($<$1 ppb) abundance of SO$_2$ under thermochemical equilibrium, compared to that produced from the photochemistry of H$_2$O and H$_2$S (1-10 ppm). However, the SO$_2$ inference was made from a single, small molecular feature in the transmission spectrum of WASP-39b at 4.05 $\mu$m, and therefore the detection of other SO$_2$ absorption bands at different wavelengths is needed to better constrain the SO$_2$ abundance. Here we report the detection of SO$_2$ spectral features at 7.7 and 8.5 $\mu$m in the 5-12 $\mu$m transmission spectrum of WASP-39b measured by the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS). Our observations suggest an abundance of SO$_2$ of 0.5-25 ppm (1$\sigma$ range), consistent with previous findings. In addition to SO$_2$, we find broad water vapour absorption features, as well as an unexplained decrease in the transit depth at wavelengths longer than 10 $\mu$m. Fitting the spectrum with a grid of atmospheric forward models, we derive an atmospheric heavy element content (metallicity) for WASP-39b of $\sim$7.1-8.0 $\times$ solar and demonstrate that photochemistry shapes the spectra of WASP-39b across a broad wavelength range., Comment: Published in Nature

Abstract

Deep learning (DL) techniques are a promising approach among the set of methods used in the ever-challenging determination of stellar parameters in M dwarfs. In this context, transfer learning could play an important role in mitigating uncertainties in the results due to the synthetic gap (i.e. difference in feature distributions between observed and synthetic data). We propose a feature-based deep transfer learning (DTL) approach based on autoencoders to determine stellar parameters from high-resolution spectra. Using this methodology, we provide new estimations for the effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and projected rotational velocity for 286 M dwarfs observed by the CARMENES survey. Using autoencoder architectures, we projected synthetic PHOENIX-ACES spectra and observed CARMENES spectra onto a new feature space of lower dimensionality in which the differences between the two domains are reduced. We used this low-dimensional new feature space as input for a convolutional neural network to obtain the stellar parameter determinations. We performed an extensive analysis of our estimated stellar parameters, ranging from 3050 to 4300 K, 4.7 to 5.1 dex, and -0.53 to 0.25 dex for Teff, logg, and [Fe/H], respectively. Our results are broadly consistent with those of recent studies using CARMENES data, with a systematic deviation in our Teff scale towards hotter values for estimations above 3750 K. Furthermore, our methodology mitigates the deviations in metallicity found in previous DL techniques due to the synthetic gap. We consolidated a DTL-based methodology to determine stellar parameters in M dwarfs from synthetic spectra, with no need for high-quality measurements involved in the knowledge transfer. Abstract

Characterizing rocky exoplanets is a central endeavor of astronomy, and yet the search for atmospheres on rocky exoplanets has hitherto resulted in either tight upper limits on the atmospheric mass or inconclusive results. The 1.95-REarth and 8.8-MEarth planet 55 Cnc e, with a predominantly rocky composition and an equilibrium temperature of ~2000 K, may have a volatile envelope (containing molecules made from a combination of C, H, O, N, S, and P elements) that accounts for up to a few percent of its radius. The planet has been observed extensively with transmission spectroscopy, and its thermal emission has been measured in broad photometric bands. These observations disfavor a primordial H2/He-dominated atmosphere but cannot conclusively determine whether the planet has a secondary atmosphere. Here we report a thermal emission spectrum of the planet obtained by JWST's NIRCam and MIRI instruments from 4 to 12 {\mu}m. The measurements rule out the scenario where the planet is a lava world shrouded by a tenuous atmosphere made of vaporized rock, and indicate a bona fide volatile atmosphere likely rich in CO2 or CO. 14. Chemometrics for Quantitative Determination of Terpenes Using Attenuated Total Reflectance--Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy: A Pedagogical Laboratory Exercise for Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis Students

Abstract

Chemometric techniques such as partial least-squares (PLS) regression have been applied with huge success to a wide array of chemical problems including multicomponent analysis of analytes in complex mixtures. Despite this, there are few examples of laboratory pedagogical exercises that involve students in the acquisition of chemical data from infrared spectroscopic-based instrumentation, followed by quantitative chemometric analysis using PLS. In this article, we present a computational activity that introduces undergraduate students in an instrumental analysis laboratory setting to data acquisition using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy followed by data analysis using PLS. The first part of the activity involved students creating mixture designs of binary terpene components consisting of p-cymene and limonene. These mixtures were then analyzed using an ATR-FTIR spectrometer, where students became familiarized with the instrument and were shown how to characterize and differentiate the aforementioned terpenes using their generated FTIR spectra. The second part of the activity involved preprocessing the acquired FTIR spectral data from the first part followed by the simultaneous quantitative determination of the prepared terpenes using PLS. On the basis of student surveys, it can be concluded that this convenient and inexpensive activity was ultimately successful in introducing students to the use of chemometrics for quantitative analysis of terpenes using an ATR-FTIR. This easy-to-do two-week activity can be used as a standalone for instrumental analysis laboratory classes and can even be integrated in advanced courses in applied spectroscopy and chemometrics.

Some of them involve a high risk to the vehicle driver, such as fire monitoring and rescue tasks, which make UAVs excellent for avoiding human risks. Mission Planning for UAVs is the process of planning the locations and actions (loading/dropping a load, taking videos/pictures, acquiring information) for the vehicles, typically over a time period. These vehicles are controlled from Ground Control Stations (GCSs) where human operators use rudimentary systems. This paper presents a new Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm for solving complex Mission Planning Problems (MPP) involving a team of UAVs and a set of GCSs. A hybrid fitness function has been designed using a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) to check if solutions are valid and Pareto-based measures to look for optimal solutions. The algorithm has been tested on several datasets optimizing different variables of the mission, such as the makespan, the fuel consumption, distance, etc. Experimental results show that the new algorithm is able to obtain good solutions, however as the problem becomes more complex, the optimal solutions also become harder to find., Comment: This is a preprint version of the article submitted and published in Soft Computing

Abstract

Objectives: Stroke is a major cause of disability in adults, necessitating consistent patient-therapist interactions and diligent adherence to home-based rehabilitation programs to achieve substantial functional recovery. This study assessed audio-based telerehabilitation's (TR) preliminary effect and feasibility in promoting home-based upper extremity exercises among stroke survivors. Methods: A 4-week parallel two-arm pilot study design was employed. Fourteen stroke survivors (seven each in the experimental and control groups) were recruited. Individuals in the control group received standard care consisting of visits to physiotherapy outpatient clinics, while the intervention group received standard care in addition to audio-based TR. The independent t-test and chi-square test were used to analyze differences in the clinical and sociodemographic data. The independent t-test was used to measure the treatment effect on the upper limb motor function (Fugl-Meyer upper extremity [FMA-UE] and Wolf motor function test [WMFT]), quality of life (QOL) (the World Health Organization (WHO) QOL brief, [WHOQOL-BREF]), and activities of daily living (Barthel index [BI]). Results: The overall Mean±SD age of the participants is 50±8.2 years. The FMA-UE and WMFT scores changed from 17.57 to 25.86 (P=0.02) and 28.14 to 43.71 (P=0.03). No significant improvements in physical health, psychological, and social relationships domains of WHOQOL-BREF were recorded after the intervention. However, the environmental domain showed significant improvement (P=0.001). Scores of BI did not change significantly (P=0.49). Discussion: The findings of this study provided preliminary evidence to support the feasibility and benefits of audio-based TR in promoting functional regain after the stroke. However, further studies with a robust design are needed to validate the reported effectiveness.
