The present study provides the first ultrastructural data on the digenean Gonocerca phycidis belonging to the family Gonocercidae. Live adults digenean were collected from the stomach of the marine fish Gephyroberyx darwinii (Teleostei: Trachichthyidae) caught in the Atlantic Ocean, off Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first report of G. phycidis from Senegal and this host species. The mature spermatozoon exhibits (i) two axonemes with the 9 + ‘‘1’’ pattern of the Trepaxonemata, (ii) a lateral expansion associated with external ornamentations and without cortical microtubules, (iii) two types of external ornamentation of the plasma membrane located in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon, (iv) two bundles of cortical microtubules in the mitochondrial and nuclear areas of the spermatozoon, (v) one mitochondrion and (vi) a nucleus. The maximum number of cortical microtubules is located in the median part of the spermatozoon. Moreover, the mature spermatozoon of G. phycidis presents some peculiarities. The presence of a lateral expansion without cortical microtubules associated with external ornamentations is described here, for the first time, in digenean spermatozoa. The presence of two elongated bundles of cortical microtubules is also reported for the first time in the superfamily of Hemiuroidea. However, the ultrastructure of the posterior spermatozoon extremity confirms that already described in other hemiuroidean species.

This work is the first ultrastructural study of spermatozoa in a species of Digenea belonging to the genus Labracetabulum. Labracetabulum gephyroberici parasitizes the digestive tract of the teleost fish Gephyroberyx darwinii (Trachichtyidae) captured in the Atlantic Ocean near Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first report of L. gephyroberici from Senegal. The mature spermatozoon is filiform tapered at both ends and exhibits the general organization described in most Opecoelideans, namely two axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, an anterior electron-dense material, an external ornamentation associated with a row of cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, two mitochondria and two bundles of cortical microtubules. However, the mature spermatozoon of L. gephyroberici exhibits some particularities: a short first axoneme which does not reach the nuclear region and the position of the second mitochondrion which reaches almost the posterior part of the mature spermatozoon. The second mitochondrion is still present after the disappearance of the second axoneme. The morphology of the posterior extremity corresponds to the Opecoelidean type described by Quilichini et al. (2010).

A new microsporidian Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite of Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite of Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the SSU rDNA gene, places the new species in the clade containing mainly crustacean-infecting microsporidia of the genus Cucumispora, within superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensu Vossbrinck et al., 2014. Mature spores of T. baccigeri are ovoid, uninucleated and measure 2.5 × 1.4 μm. The number of coils of the polar tube is 8-10. The polaroplast is composed of an external lamellar part and an internal vesicular or granular part. The main differences that distinguish the new genus and new species from the closely related microsporidia include hyperparasitism in a digenean host infecting a marine fish, the geographic distribution (coast of Tunisia), presence of one nucleus at all developmental stages, disporoblastic sporogony, and the absence of sporophorous vacuoles.Étude ultrastructurale et moléculaire de la microsporidie Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite du trématode digène Bacciger israelensis (Faustulidae), parasite de Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae).Une nouvelle microsporidie Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite de Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite de Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) est décrite en microscopie électronique à transmission. Les spores mûres de T. baccigeri sont ovoïdes, uninucléées et mesurent 2,5 × 1,4 μm. Le nombre de tours de spire décrits par le tube polaire est de 8 à 10. Coxiella burnetii and Toxoplasma gondii are intracellular pathogens that cause important reproductive disorders in humans and animals worldwide, which translates into high economic losses. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible role of peridomestic small mammals in the maintenance and transmission of C. burnetii and T. gondii in the Mediterranean island of Corsica, by the analysis of the seroprevalence in rodents. Our results showed a wide distribution of C. burnetii and T. gondii in Corsica in Rattus rattus and Mus musculus domesticus. The overall seroprevalence of anti-C. burnetii was 9.32%, being 8.73% from R. rattus and 13.33% from M. m. domesticus. With respect to T. gondii, seropositive rodents were observed in 12.96% of total animals, being 12.76% from rats and 14.29% from mice. Taking into consideration the large range of host these pathogens can infect, including humans and livestock, and their pathologies, the results provided by this study are relevant for public health and veterinary, and could help the governmental entities to prevent possible infectious focuses of Q fever and toxoplasmosis.

In this transmission electron microscopy study, we describe the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Heterotis niloticus (Osteoglossiformes), which is distinguished by having two flagella. Our investigation also highlights the great diversity of sperm cell structures observed across osteoglossiform families, such as aflagellate (Gymnarchidae, Mormyridae), monoflagellate (Notopteridae, Pantodontidae) and biflagellate spermatozoa. As biflagellate spermatozoa are rare in vertebrates, we also summarize the orders and families known to possess this ultrastructural character, most of which are fishes.

This study provides the first ultrastructural data on the mature spermatozoon of Aephnidiogenes senegalensis (Digenea, Lepocreadioidea, Aephnidiogenidae) parasite of the teleost fish Pomadasys jubelini (Haemulidae) captured near the coast of Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first ultrastructural data on the spermatozoon in the genus Aephnidiogenes. The mature spermatozoon of A. senegalensis is filiform, tapered at both ends and exhibits the general pattern described in the Lepocreadioidea, namely two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1’ pattern, an antero-lateral electron dense material, a nucleus, two mitochondria, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane in the anterior region of the spermatozoon, granules of glycogen and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. A peculiarity of the spermatozoon of A. senegalensis is the structure of the apical electron-dense material.

The mature spermatozoon of Sclerodistomum italicum is filiform, tapered at both ends and shows the following features: 2 axonemes of the 9+"1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, mitochondrion, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. The specific features of the spermatozoon of S. italicum include the simultaneous presence of two types of extramembranous ornamentations, the presence of short cortical microtubules in the anterior part of the spermatozoon and the presence of only one bundle of cortical microtubules in the median part of the spermatozoon. Thus far these structures are known only in the Hemiuroidea. The presence of filamentous ornamentation in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon has not previously been described in the Sclerodistomidae. Similar to spermatozoa of other hemiuroideans, S. italicum lack spine-like bodies described in spermatozoa of many digenean taxa. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon exhibits the same ultrastructural characteristics typical of the Hemiuroidea.

The mature Podocotyloides magnatestis spermatozoon exhibits two axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, an external ornamentation of plasma membrane, glycogen granules and an antero-lateral electron-dense material. These ultrastructural characteristics have already been described in the Opecoeloidea species studied so far. However, P. magnatestis spermatozoon is distinguished by the fact that its electron-dense material is laterally located on the side of the second axoneme. Moreover, the posterior spermatozoon extremity, characterized by the presence of the nucleus, is observed for the first time in the Opecoelidae.

International audience; The mature spermatozoon of Hemiurus appendiculatus exhibits the general pattern described in most of the digenean namely, two axonemes of the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, a filiform mitochondrion, external ornamentations of the plasma membrane and parallel cortical microtubules located on one side of the spermatozoon. In this study, we show for the second time in a digenean spermatozoon the presence of microtubules of the second axoneme associated each in a short length with an external ornamentation, seven cortical microtubules, a terminal bulge in the anterior spermatozoon extremity separate from the remainder of the spermatozoon by a transverse constriction and the simultaneous presence of the external ornamentation of the plasma membrane with a filamentous ornamentation. The external ornamentations have a differentiated distribution, cover almost the anterior region of the spermatozoon, are more abundant around the first axoneme and extend backwards over a short distance around the second axoneme. This study also allowed us to reveal for the first time the existence in the Hemiuroidea of an axoneme that begins to disrupt before reaching the front end of the mitochondrion.

International audience; The common dentex Dentex dentex (Linnaeus, 1758) is an iconic marine coastal fish in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a demersal sparid fish (0–200 m), that grows to a maximum length of 100 cm and a weight of 13 kg, with a relatively long life span (more than 20 years). As a high trophic level predator, it holds a key position in coastal marine food webs. The common dentex is of great economic importance for both artisanal (small-scale coastal fisheries) and recreational fishing. Despite its economic and ecological importance, scientific data on this species in its natural environment are still very scant. The global commercial catch of common dentex has fluctuated over the last 60 years on an interannual time scale, and has declined significantly since the 1990s. There are few data regarding fishing effort and total catch from recreational fishing for common dentex, but it appears that this species is particularly targeted by this activity. The common dentex is now classified as ‘‘vulnerable’’ in the Red List of Threatened Species in the Mediterranean Sea. This review summarizes the current literature on D. dentex in regard to biology, ecology, parasitology, population structure, commercial and recreational fishing, and management regulations. Future research directions to fill gaps in current knowledge are suggested.

International audience; The parasites of 425 European eels, Anguilla anguilla, were studied between 2009 and 2012 in two Mediterranean coastal lagoons of the island of Corsica, France. An indicator value (IndVal) method was used for analysis, which combines measures of fidelity and specificity. Because of its resilience to detect changes in abundance, IndVal is an effective ecological bioindicator. The IndVal method demonstrated that site, season, silvering stage, and length could influence the occurrence of parasite species in European eel. A randomization test identified ten parasite species as having a significant indicator value for site (lagoons differed principally in salinity: oligohaline to polyhaline for the Biguglia lagoon and polyhaline to euhaline for the Urbino lagoon; the digeneans Bucephalus anguillae and Lecithochirium musculus, the cestodes Bothriocephalus claviceps, Proteocephalus macrocephalus, and larvae of Myzophyllobothrium sp., the nematodes Anguillicoloides crassus, and encysted larvae of Contracaecum sp., the acanthocephalan Acanthocephaloides incrassatus, the monogenean Pseudodactyogyrus anguillae, and the copepod Ergasilus gibbus); one parasite species for the spring season (the acanthocephalan A. incrassatus); six parasite species for silvering stage (yellow, pre-silver, silver; the trematodes B. anguillae and Deropristis inflata, encysted larvae of the nematode Contracaecum sp., the acanthocephalan A. incrassatus, the monogenean P. anguillae, and the copepod E. gibbus); and three parasite species for some of the five length classes (the cestode P. macrocephalus, encysted larvae of the nematode Contracaecum sp., and the monogenean P. anguillae). Data for species composition and infection levels should help to improve the management of parasitism in the populations of European eels.

The ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon of the type genus of the Plagiorchiidae Plagiorchis elegans (Rudolphi, 1802), a parasite of the Golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus is described. This study is the first ultrastructural study of the spermatozoon of a Plagiorchis, the second of a plagiorchiid species and only the third in the Plagiorchioidea. Previously data on spermatozoon ultrastructure existed only for the plagiorchiid Enodiotrema reductum and the omphalometrid Rubenstrema exasperatum. The mature spermatozoon of P. elegans exhibited the general pattern described in most digenean species, namely two axonemes of the 9 + "1" Trepaxonemata pattern, nucleus, mitochondria, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, and glycogen granules. However, the rather typical expansion of the plasma membrane is not found in P. elegans. Another peculiarity of the spermatozoon of P. elegans is the presence of a structure called thin cytoplasm termination. Spermatozoon ultrastructure of P. elegans is compared with that of E. reductum and R. exasperatum. Spermatozoon of P. elegans conforms to the general pattern described in E. reductum. Thus, this study further expands our knowledge on the spermatozoon ultrastructure among the members of the Plagiorchioidea, one of the most phylogenetically derived groups of the digenea.

International audience; The mature spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. is filiform and tapered at both extremities. It possesses 2 axonemes of unequal length, showing the 9 + "1" pattern of Trepaxonemata. The anterior extremity exhibits a crest-like body. Thereafter, the crest-like body disappears, and the first axoneme is surrounded by a ring of cortical microtubules (about 27 units) that persist until the appearance of the second axoneme. This ring of cortical microtubules is characteristic only for species of Bothriocephalidea and represents a very useful phylogenetic character. The spermatozoon cytoplasm is slightly electron-dense and contains numerous electron-dense granules of glycogen in several regions. The anterior and posterior extremities of the spermatozoon lack cortical microtubules. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. possesses a nucleus and a disorganized axoneme, which also characterizes spermatozoa of the Echinophallidae studied to date.

International audience; This study deals with first ultrastructure features of Acanthocephaloides incrassatus (Paleacanthocephala, Arhythmacanthidae), a parasite of the fish Anguilla anguilla, reported for the first time in a Mediterranean pond. The spermiogenesis of A. incrassatus shows original specificities which have never been pointed out to this day in ultrastructural studies on spermiogenesis: the centriolar derivative is divided into two parts of different densities: an electron-dense, and the other, electron-lucent; a ring form has been observed on each side of the axoneme; a centriole with one central element. After the elaboration of a flagellum of 9 + 2 pattern, the centriole migrates in a nuclear groove. Rapidly, the centriole disappears. Then, the flagellum migration occurs by a series of processes and gives rise to a spermatozoon. The spermatozoon of A. incrassatus presents its own specificities: it exhibits an evolution of the centriolar derivative characterized by only nine peripheral elements deprived of a central element in the anterior part, then nine peripheral and one central element, and finally, nine peripheral elements with two central elements. An assumption is emitted on a probable correspondence of the evolution of the derivative centriolar during the spermiogenesis and the evolution that occurs in the spermatozoon. Protein granules also show different sizes and forms, full or emptied of their contents compared with data on other Acanthocephala.

International audience; Sparicotyle chrysophrii infections were highlighted during a parasitological monitoring carried out on cultured Gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata Linnaeus 1758 from aquaculture sites in Corsica. Factors and biological mechanisms regulating parasites populations, particularly controlling the infestation and survival of monogeneans have been studied. Variations in infection support the hypotheses that the main factor determining the infection of S. chrysophrii was temperature and that the parasite life cycle could be influenced by fish size and fish age. One hundred forty-nine of 280 S. aurata studied were infected. Seasonal differences in prevalence of infection were observed in all farms studied. A similar pattern was observed for parasite abundance with maximal infection levels occurring when water temperature were lower. A statistically significant dependence between infection and host size was also observed. The study of the surface topography of S. chrysophrii with scanning electron microscopy highlighted morphological adaptations not previously described. Parasites have developed diverse mechanisms of survival within the host that facilitate the establishment of infection. We mainly studied sensory structures and the anchoring systems of the parasite, i.e., filaments of eggs and haptor, enabling it to ensure the dispersal and survival of the species.

The Endangered Corsican red deer Cervus elaphus corsicanus was extirpated from Corsica in the early 1970s, at which time the Sardinian population fell to c. 250 individuals. These deer are still closely monitored and studied, both in enclosures and in the wild, to secure the long-term conservation of this subspecies. The Corsican and Sardinian populations together now total slightly >1,000, and the subspecies could therefore be downgraded to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

International audience; The present paper describes the spermatozoon of Nicolla testiobliquum (Digenea, Opecoelidae), an intestinal parasite of brown trout Salmo trutta, studied by transmission electron microscopy. The mature spermatozoon possess two axonemes of 9 + "1" pattern, two mitochondria, a nucleus, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies and cortical microtubules. A comparative study between N. testiobliquum and Nicolla wisniewskii shows mainly two different dispositions of the two mitochondria in these two species of a same genera. Moreover, the comparison of each of these spermatozoon features with others digeneans, in general, and other Opecoelidae in particular, is also presented. It appears that the organisation of the posterior part of the spermatozoon, the disposition of cortical microtubules and external ornamentation associated with spine-like bodies could be interesting elements for phylogeny.

International audience; To our knowledge, this paper describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of a Digenea belonging to the family Deropristidae, Deropristis inflata. Spermiogenesis follows the usual pattern found in the digeneans, but a single noteworthy characteristic concerns the centriole, which presents a "prominent pear-shaped electron-dense region." Spermiogenesis in D. inflata begins with the formation of a differentiation zone. The two centrioles give rise to flagella. These two flagella undergo a rotation of 90 degrees and fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. The proximo-distal fusion occurs at the level of attachment zones. The mature spermatozoon of D. inflata possesses five regions and presents all the features found in the digenean gamete. However, several characteristics allow us to distinguish the spermatozoon of D. inflata from other digenetic trematoda, namely the external ornamentations of the plasmic membrane, the anterior and posterior extremities. Furthermore, the distal part of the nucleus in front of those of the mitochondria appears such a distinctive criterion in the spermatozoon of this species. Our ultrastructural investigations produce new data on the reproduction of D. inflata, which may be useful for the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the Deropristidae family.

Following the oil spills due to the accidents involving the oil tankers Erika and Prestige on the Atlantic coast, thermal remediation of oil polluted sands in a fluidized bed was studied. A thermal process is proposed as an alternative to the physico-chemical washing that has been carried out with the Erika wastes. The study consists of: choice of the polluted wastes; air fluidization behavior of oil polluted sands in a cold fluidized bed; depollution characterization in a hot fluidized bed; design and engineering of an industrial scale furnace and investment and operating cost evaluation of such a remediation unit. Polluted sands were prepared for different combinations of sand particle diameter, oil and water content. Fluidizability of oil polluted sands was checked in a cold model fluidized bed facility. Hot tests showed that combustion started as soon as the fluidized bed temperature was equal to or higher than 700 °C. The remediation of the polluted sand was good in all the cases with a remaining pollution in the sand of about 50 mg/kg. Flue gas emissions were within the regulatory limits. There was no danger of any ash fusion noticed even in the long duration tests. An industrial scale furnace was then designed based on the measured limits of fluidizability and the evaluated time necessary to get an almost complete remediation of the oil. Fluidized bed treatment costs were then evaluated and compared to the physico-chemical separation that has been used in the case of Erika oil spill and the thermal treatment in a rotating furnace. Fluidized bed combustion appeared to be one of the best options with a cost of only 80 €/t of polluted waste.

Jean‐Francois Gravier and Armin Meili were two leading pioneers of planning in France and Switzerland. Gravier was the famous author of Paris et le desert francais, first published in 1947; Meili was the author of the first national conception of planning in Switzerland and was very active in planning policy in the 1940s. Each has deeply influenced the implementation of planning policy in his country and both have constructed their theories around a criticism of the city: Paris for Gravier; big cities, in general, for Meili. This paper first describes the recurrent critiques of the city in the thoughts of these authors. From sterility to unhealthiness, they combine moral and physical criticisms. Although they belong to different countries and different political cultures, their thoughts take root in surprisingly common backgrounds based on the strength of ruralism and the political context of fascism. Electron microscopy of the testes of the free-living flatworm Mesocastrada fuhrmanni collected from temporary freshwater ponds shows stages of spermiogenesis that are like other species of the Typhloplanidae. Spermiogenesis in Mesocastrada fuhrmanni is characterized by the presence, in the spermatid, of a differentiation zone underlain by peripheral microtubules and centered on two centrioles with an intercentriolar body. Two flagella of the 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata grow out in opposite directions from the centrioles. The flagella undergo a latero-ventral rotation, and a subsequent disto-proximal rotation of centrioles occurs in the spermatid. The former rotation involves the compression and the detachment of a row of cortical microtubules, and allows us to recognize a ventral from a dorsal side. Two features are of special interest at the end of differentiation: peripheral cortical microtubules lie parallel to the sperm axis near the anterior tip, but microtubules become twisted (about 40° with reference to the gamete axis) near the posterior extremity; in the same way, the posterior tip of the nucleus is spiralled. As far as we know, these features are observed for the first time in the Typhloplanidae. The pattern of spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoon are compared with the available data on Typhloplanoida and in particular, species of the Typhloplanidae family.

Spermiogenesis in Mesostoma viaregginum begins with the formation of a zone of differentiation containing striated rootlets, two centrioles, and an intercentriolar body in-between. These centrioles generate two parallel free-flagella with the 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata growing out in opposite directions. Spermatid differentiation is characterised by a 90° latero-ventral rotation of flagella and a subsequent disto-proximal centriolar rotation, with a distal cytoplasmic projection. The former rotation involves the compression of a row of cortical microtubules and allows recognising a flagellar side and an aflagellar side in the late spermatid and in the mature spermatozoon. At the end of the differentiation, centrioles and microtubules lie parallel to the spermatid axis. The disto-proximal centriolar rotation is proposed as a synapomorphy for the Rhabdocoela. The modifications of the intercentriolar body during spermiogenesis and the migration of the nucleus and the centrioles towards the cytoplasmic distal projection are also described. The mature spermatozoon of M. viaregginum is filiform and tapered at both ends and presents many features found in the Rhabdocoela gametes. The nucleus disappears before the flagellar insertion and a density gradient of mitochondria is observed along the sperm axis. The anterior end of the spermatozoon of M. viaregginum is characterised by a tapering capped by a membrane expansion. This study has enabled us to describe precisely the orientation of spermatozoa in the Rhabdocoela in general: the centriolar extremity is proposed as the anterior one for the Rhabdocoela.

Life cycle stages of a new species of the genus Nosema Naegeli, 1857 (Microspora, Nosematidae), were examined by light and electron microscopy. It parasitizes the gut and the uterus of the digenean Monorchis parvus (Monorchiidae), in Diplodus annularis (Pisces, Teleostei). All stages were in close contact with the cytoplasm of the host cell and were probably all diplokaryotic. The divisions of meronts and sporonts were recognizable by the formation of spindle plaques at the surface of the nucleus. Spores were oval, measured 3.2±0.3×2.5±0.2 μm on ultrathin sections, and had a polar filament with 16–17 coils. The polaroplast presented two parts: an anterior region with closely packed lamellae and a posterior part with wider lamellae. This Nosema species is compared with the other microsporidian parasites of digeneans. This new species is named Nosema monorchis n. sp., after the generic name of its host.

International audience; Spermiogenesis and ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of the pseudophyllidean cestode Triaenophorus nodulosus (Pallas, 1781), a parasite of pike Esox lucius, has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis involves firstly the formation of a zone of differentiation with two centrioles associated with striated roots, and an intercentriolar body between them, subsequent growth of the two flagella of unequal length, and a formation of a median cytoplasmic process exhibiting patches of dense material. The nucleus penetrates into spermatid body after flagellar rotation and proximo-distal fusion has started. The mature spermatozoon of T. nodulosus is filiform and contains two axonemes of 9+"1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, cortical microtubules parallel to the spermatozoon axis, and electron-dense granules. The anterior extremity of the gamete contains a single centriole surrounded by numerous electron-dense tubular structures exhibiting spiral arrangement and giving rise to lateral projections, which correspond to the crested body. When the crested body disappears, the spiral pattern of electron-dense tubular structures is changed into a ring, persisting until the centriole of the second axonemes appears. This structure of the crested body of T. nodulosus is unique among the Eucestoda.

International audience; This work describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and on the mature spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium hospes (Trematoda, Digenea) collected in Bos indicus from Senegal (Africa). Examination of this species was processed by TEM. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digenean, but reveals a particularity consisting of the appearance of glycogen granules in the late spermatids within the testes. The mature spermatozoon possesses five distinct regions and presents all features found in Digenea gametes: two axonemes, mitochondria, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. However, several characters allow us to distinguish D. hospes from other digenetic trematodes within the Dicrocoeliidae family. In fact, we observed several structures that are absent in the other species of Dicrocoeliidae studied until now, such as: a cytoplasmic expansion, extramembranar ornamentation, spine-like bodies and two parallel mitochondria in the mature sperm. Moreover, additional particular characteristics were observed in this species in both extremities of the spermatozoon. This work produced new data on the ultrastructure of this trematode family which may be useful for phylogenetic purposes.

Ultrastruc- ture of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon in Castrada cristatispina Papi, 1951 (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela, Typhloplanida). — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 85 : 245-256 Spermiogenesis in Castrada cristatispina begins with the formation of a zone of differentiation containing two centrioles with associated striated rootlets and an intercentriolar body between them. The centrioles give rise to two parallel, free flagella of the Trepaxonemata 9 + '1' pattern, growing out in opposite directions. Spermatids undergo a latero-ventral rotation of the flagella and a subsequent disto-proximal rotation of centrioles, and a distal cytoplasmic projection appears. The former rotation involves the compression of a row of microtubules and allows the recognition of a ventral side and a dorsal side. At the end of the differentiation, the centrioles and cortical microtubules lie parallel to the sperm axis. The modifications of the intercentriolar body and the migration of the nucleus and the centrioles toward the distal projection are described. The mature spermatozoon of C. cristatispina is filiform, tapered at both ends and shares several features with the other Rhabdocoela gametes. Nevertheless, the posterior extremity is capped by an electron-dense material. A gradient between mitochondria and dense bodies exists along the sperm axis. This study has enable us a phylogenetic approach of the Rhabdocoela through a comparison of the ultrastructural features of C. cristatispina with the other Rhabdocoela taxa. We propose the disto-proximal rotation of centrioles as a synapomorphy of the Rhabdocoela.

Cymodocea nodosa meadows within the Urbinu lagoon showed unimodal growth during an annual cycle (1998–1999), reaching maximum development in summer, minimal development in winter, and a particularly active phase in spring. The below-ground biomass (446 g dry wt. m −2 )w as higher than the above-ground biomass (332 g dry wt. m −2 ). Leaf production was 2058 g dry wt. m −2 per year (84 4gCm −2 per year), rhizome production was 412 g dry wt. m −2 per year (144 g C m −2 per year) and the production/biomass ratio (P/B) was 3.2 per year. These meadows have high total biomass (778 g dry wt. m −2 ) and vegetative production (2470 g dry wt. m −2 per year), with the largest total primary production recorded to date. These parameters are higher than those generally observed for the same seagrass species within other Mediterranean lagoonal and marine environments.

The surface area covered by three protected seagrass species (Cymodocea nodosa, Zostera noltii and Ruppia cirrhosa) and their distribution in the Urbinu Lagoon were estimated for the first time by surveying 206 ha area, representing 29% of the total area, using field data, aerial photography and image processing. These methods allowed evaluation of the distribution of seagrass meadows both at horizontal and vertical levels. The computer analyses of the cartographic data permitted evaluation of the surface occupied by the various types of populations. The identification of the limiting factors, which may affect the quality of results, allows the proposal of a scale of reliability for the estuarine ecosystem.

Aerial photographs and in situ data of the Urbinu Lagoon (one of the largest and deepest ponds in Corsica, Mediterranean Sea) permit the establishment of a cartography of its aquatic benthic assemblages and types of sea-beds. It was possible to distinguish in the photographs submerged structures such as: sand, pebbles, mud and seagrass meadows. Seagrass beds were the predominant vegetation type in this lagoon (comprising 14-29% of the total area depending on the year studied), and their distribution was incorporated into a geographical information database, and then compared with historical data. Temporal and spatial change in seagrass meadows was assessed between 1990 and 1997. Change in total extent was evaluated through a map to map comparison of data interpreted from image processing using colored aerial photographs (1990, 1994 and 1997). The overall net change was a 12% decrease between 1990 and 1994 and a 16% increase between 1994 and 1997. These observations imply that regressions are not irreversible over the past 7 years, and show that seagrass meadows in this area have been stable despite environmental perturbations, since the lost zones were recolonized., Des photographies aériennes et des observations sur le terrain permettent de cartographier les biocénoses aquatiques et les types de fonds au sein de l’étang d’Urbinu (un des plus grands et des plus profonds étangs de Corse, île de Méditerranée). Grâce à ces photographies, il est possible de délimiter les structures sous-marines présentes comme les fonds sableux, les fonds rocheux, les fonds vaseux et les herbiers à phanérogames. Le type de végétation prédominant dans cette lagune sont les phanérogames qui occupent 14 à 29 % de la surface totale selon les années. Leur distribution a été intégrée dans une base de données afin de pouvoir être comparée avec des données historiques. L’évolution spatiotemporelle de ces herbiers à phanérogames a été évaluée entre 1990 et 1997. L’importance des changements a été estimée grâce à une comparaison de cartographies réalisées par traitement d’image à partir de photographies aériennes couleurs (de 1990, 1994 et 1997). Le changement net global était de 12 % de pertes de surface entre 1990 et 1994 et de 16 % de gain entre 1994 et 1997. Ces observations impliquent que les régressions ne sont pas irréversibles au cours de ces sept dernières années et montrent que les herbiers à phanérogames ont été stables dans cette zone en dépit des perturbations environnementales, puisque les zones perdues ont été recolonisées.

Prescribed burning is now widely used in ecosystems in Mediterranean regions as an efficient management practice to reduce both the quantities of fuel biomass and the fire frequency, seasonality, intensity and size. The regime of prescribed burning should be adapted to maintain the biological diversity and impact on population dynamics must be determined. We studied the effect of prescribed burning on the capture and survival rates of a population of small mammals, the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) in the Mediterranean region of Torderes, France. To this end, we used a rectangular trapping quadrat measuring 300 × 225 m2, in which 1366 individuals were captured and marked over a total of 18 trapping sessions (May 1991–June 1996). Several prescribed fires were ignited between the fifth and sixth trapping sessions. These multiple fires resulted in a partial burning of the study site, which left a number of small patches of vegetation intact. To estimate the influence of this prescribed burning on capture and survival rates of the wood mouse, the Cormack–Jolly–Seber model was fitted. Likelihood ratio test and AIC criterion allowed us to select the most parsimonious model for our survival data, the additive model Φs + t. This model did not demonstrate any significant change in survival rates after the prescribed fires, probably because the fire left behind small patches of vegetation and the wood mouse can quickly recolonize the study site. Our result is in accordance with other studies, which found little impact of prescribed burning on survival rates and abundance in animal populations.

Spermiogenesis in Vampirolepis microstoma begins with the formation of a nuclear cone and a differentiation zone. This is delimited at the front by arched membranes, bordered by cortical microtubules, and contains two parallel centrioles linked together at their bases by electron-dense, amorphous material. The nuclear cone elongates, becomes filiform, and migrates into the spermatid body. Later, one of the centrioles gives rise to a flagellum that grows at the same pace as the cortical microtubules. Subsequently, 6 crested bodies form and the old spermatid separates from the residual cytoplasm. The mature V. microstoma spermatozoon is filiform and lacks mitochondria. Its anterior end exhibits six crested bodies 100 to 200 nm thick of unequal lengths. The axoneme is of the 9+”1” pattern. The cortical microtubules are spiralized and make an angle of about 20 to 30° to the spermatozoon axis, except at their posterior extremity where they become parallel to this axis. The nucleus is an electron-dense cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. The cytoplasm is slightly dense but contains many electron-dense granules in regions III, IV, and V of the spermatozoon. The presence of centrioles linked together at their bases by electron-dense material has never, to our knowledge, been reported in a Platyhelminth. Likewise, a nuclear migration, right from the beginning to the end of spermiogenesis, has never been described in a cestode. International audience; The spermatological characteristics of Collyricloides massanae (Digenea: Collyriclidae), a parasite of Apodemus sylvaticus caught in France, were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The mature sperm of C. massanae presents two axonemes of different lengths with the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, one mitochondrion, a nucleus and granules of glycogen. An analysis of spermatological organisation emphasised some differences between the mature spermatozoon of C. massanae and those reported in the Gorgoderoidea species studied to date, specially belonging to the families Dicrocoeliidae, Paragonimidae and Troglotrematidae. The ultrastructural criteria described in C. massanae such as the morphology of both anterior and posterior spermatozoon extremities, the association "external ornamentation+cortical microtubules", the type 2 of external ornamentation and the spine-like bodies would allow us to bring closer the Collyriclidae to Microphalloidea. However, further ultrastructural and molecular studies are needed particularly in the unexplored taxa in order to fully resolve the phylogenetic position of the Collyriclidae.

International audience; This study provides the first ultrastructural data of spermatozoa in the genus Lecithochirium. The spermatozoa of L. microstomum (from Trichiurus lepturus in Senegal) and L. musculus (from Anguilla anguilla in Corsica) exhibit the general pattern described in the great majority of the Digenea, namely two axonemes with the 9 + "1" pattern typical of the Trepaxonemata, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of L. microstomum and L. musculus have some specific features such as the presence of a reduced number of cortical microtubules arranged on only one side of the spermatozoon, the lack of spine-like bodies and expansion of the plasma membrane. The external ornamentation of the plasma membrane entirely covers the anterior extremity of the spermatozoa. The ultrastructure of the posterior extremity of the spermatozoa corresponds to the pattern previously described in the Hemiuridae, characterized by only singlets of the second axoneme. A particularity of these spermatozoa is the organization of the microtubule doublets of the second axoneme around the nucleus in the posterior part of the spermatozoon.

We report for the first time the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of a Dilepididae cestode. The mature spermatozoa of Dipylidium caninum is filiform and tapered at both ends and lacks mitochondria. The anterior extremity exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material measuring about 600 nm in length and a single helicoidal crested-like body that is 150 nm thick. This single crested-like body is spiralized at an angle of about 40 degrees to the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme, showing the 9 + "l" pattern of the Platyhelminthes, lacks a periaxonemal sheath. The cortical microtubules constitute a continuous, submembranous, electron-dense material, and they are also twisted at an angle of about 40 degrees to the spermatozoon axis. Moreover, the nucleus is coiled in a helix around the axoneme, which is centrally located throughout its length. We demonstrate for the first time the presence of peripheral microtubules twisted to the spermatozoon axis up to the posterior extremity of the gamete.

One of the worst defects of urban games is the all-powerful role they reserve to the user: the player usually creates a city from nowhere, designs, like a god, the complete city map, and makes alone all the important choices on land control and land use, population flows, financial policies, etc. In reality, almost all important decisions concerning city management are taken after long and often protracted negotiations between protagonists. This is the very basis of democratic city rule and corresponds fully to the importance of local administration in modern industrial countries. Software trying to simulate the evolution of a city in order to give new insights in the task and to understand better how local administration works can hardly avoid simulating such negotiations. Another important goal of urban simulation games is to demonstrate to the user how a city reacts to external impacts: with a didactic goal in mind, urban softwares need more than the others to mimic the processes and the conclusion of a negotiation. This paper discusses the conditions a program simulating negotiations must meet and proposes such a software called Negoce.

The Avitellina centripunctataspermatozoon is filiform, tapered at both ends and lacks mitochondria. The anterior extremity exhibits an apical cone and a crested–like body 150–200 nm thick. The axoneme is surrounded by a fine layer of lucent cytoplasm and a sheath of electron–dense material. The cytoplasm is slightly electron–dense at the anterior tip of the apical cone and in region IV of the spermatozoon. Over the rest of the gamete it is subdivided into numerous electron–lucent compartments by irregularly spaced walls. The nucleus is electron–dense. It interposes itself between the cortical microtubules which are all electron–dense centred and spiralized along their whole length. An apical zone containing spiralized microtubules, cortical microtubules which are all electron–dense centred and stop before reaching the posterior extremity of the nucleus, as well as the subdivision into cavities by intracytoplasmic proteinaceous material, have never been described before in a cestod. Moreover, the crested–like body of Avitellina centripunctatais the thickest of those which have been described to date in the cestods.
