The effect of roasting, frying, microwave heating, and germination on the antioxidant properties, total phenolics and flavonoids content of two types of peanuts (Valencia and Virginia) grown in Mexico was investigated. The thermal treatments affected the phenolic content and the antioxidant capacity of the two varieties of peanuts differently (by ABTS, DPPH, FRAP and iron chelating activity methods). Germination was the best method to increase the antioxidant activity (up to 157% increase in the Virginia variety) and the contents of compounds with nutraceutical potential in the peanuts (up to 59% increase in total phenolics in the Valencia variety and 700% increase in total flavonoids in the Virginia variety). The full spray emitted by Taylor cones of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMI[sup +]BF[sub 4][sup -]) held in a vacuum is investigated at room temperature by time of flight mass spectrometry. The current is composed mainly of ions under most conditions studied, but contains a small component of nanometer drops that tends to dominate the emitted mass flow. Exceptionally, drop ejection vanishes close to the smallest flow rate at which the Taylor cone is steady. The present discovery of a stable strictly ionic regime in Taylor cones of substances other than liquid metals owes much to earlier observations with sulfuric acid, where most but not all the current was ionic. Most striking is the fact that this purely ionic regime is obtained at an electrical conductivity K of only 1.3 S/m, much smaller than that of sulfuric acid, and smaller than that at which formamide electrolytes with K>2 S/m do still emit substantial drop currents. The ion emission includes primarily the dimer (EMI–BF[sub 4])EMI[sup +], accompanied by fair currents of the monomer EMI[sup +] and the trimer ions. The modest spread of ion energies observed and considerable currents attained (0.6 μA) suggests the use of this and other ionic liquids as ion beam sources with a much wider range of mass/charge and chemical compositions than previously available. Mycobacterium kansasii was administered intravenously to congenitally athymic (nude) mice. Beginning 1 week later, rifapentine, azithromycin, ethambutol or combined therapy was initiated orally. Mice were immunosuppressed using corticosteroids and infected with conidia of Aspergillus fumigatus. Beginning 1 day after injection, mice were treated orally either with Noble agar or with SCH56592 suspended in Noble agar, or intraperitoneally with amphotericin B. SCH56592 prolonged survival and reduced lung tissue counts of A. fumigatus, while amphotericin B had marginal benefit. SCH56592 merits further development for treatment of aspergillosis. Candida glabrata is an emerging opportunist pathogen in immunosuppressed patients. C. glabrata is resistant to many antifungal agents and until recently, there have been no standard treatment regimens for this organism. A mouse model was established using mice immunosuppressed with 5 fluorouracil to evaluate amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole and their combinations to treat an intravenously induced C. glabrata infection. Treatment with fluconazole, flucytosine, amphotericin B or a combination was begun one day after infection. Following 5 days of treatment, the mice were killed for fungal counts in kidneys and spleen. At the doses used, amphotericin B was superior to fluconazole or flucytosine alone in the treatment of C. glabrata infections. Flucytosine reduced the fungal burden in the kidney for only two of four isolates of C. glabrata. The combination of fluconazole and flucytosine was superior to these agents alone in reducing the tissue burden in the kidney for one isolate of C. glabrata. High doses of fluconazole alone produced modest reductions in kidney counts but did not reduce spleen tissue counts. There was poor correlation between in-vitro MICs and in-vivo results. We prove here, the feasibility of water-based compound Taylor cones held in a vacuum. Unlike other solvents used in colloidal propulsion, water presents excellent qualities in terms of ion evaporation delay or attainable conductivity, enabling higher specific impulses and propulsion efficiency.
