Hydrogels are interesting materials as delivery systems of various therapeutic agents, mainly due to the water-swollen network and the localized and sustained drug release. Herein, single-component starch-based hydrogels with enhanced degradation rates were produced by applying a facile synthesis and proposed for a novel delivery system of therapeutic molecules. Starch was oxidized with sodium periodate in water and mild conditions to generate aldehyde derivatives that, after a freeze-thaw procedure, were allowed to compact and stable hydrogels. Oxidized starch was also cross-linked with asparagine through a Schiff base reaction to link the active molecule directly to the polysaccharide structure. The materials were structurally and morphologically characterized, and the ability to adsorb and release over time an active molecule was proven by qNMR spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity was evaluated on CAL-27 cell line (oral squamous cell carcinoma). Results indicated that synthesized hydrogels lead to a "frozen proliferative" state on cells due to the swelling capability in the cell medium. This behavior was confirmed by flow cytometry data indicating the hydrogels induced less "early apoptosis" and more "late apoptosis" in the cells, compared to the untreated control. The reactivity of Morita–Baylis–Hillman Adduct (MBHA) derivative 7 was studied with different primary amine derivatives such as n‐butylamine, Nα‐acetyl‐L‐lysine methyl ester, and a poly‐(L‐lysine) derivative as lysine models to obtain information about the possible reactions in complex protein environments. MBHA derivative 7 reacted with n‐butylamine or Nα‐acetyl‐L‐lysine methyl ester producing monoadducts 9a or 9c, which showed bright emission features in the green region at 526–535 nm with photoluminescence quantum yield values in solutions of 73 % and 51 %, respectively. Based on these results, MBHA derivative 7 can be considered an interesting new fluorogenic probe potentially useful in the labelling of basic amino acid residues. Furthermore, similar to other MBHA derivatives, compound 7 showed the tendency to produce diadducts especially in polar solvents system where specific interactions between the extended aromatic moieties may play a major role. Some syndiotactic-rich polyolefins, generally difficult to synthesize through stereospecific polymerization of the corresponding monomers, were prepared by homogeneous non-catalytic hydrogenation of syndiotactic 1,2 poly(1,3-diene)s with diimide, arising from thermal decomposition of p-toluene-sulfonyl-hydrazide. The homogeneous non-catalytic hydrogenation of several types of iso- and syndiotactic cis-1,4 poly(1,3-diene)s with diimide, formed by thermal decomposition of p-toluene-sulfonyl-hydrazide, was examined. Perfectly alternating ethylene/1-alkene copolymers having different tacticity (i.e., isotactic and syndiotactic), which in some cases are difficult to synthesize by simple stereospecific co-polymerization of the corresponding monomers, were obtained. Contamination of the aqueous environment caused by the presence of heavy metal ions and oils is a growing concern that must be addressed to reduce their detrimental impact on living organisms and safeguard the environment. Recent efficient and environmentally friendly remediation methods for the treatment of water are based on third-generation bioaerogels as emerging applications for the removal of heavy metal ions and oils from aqueous systems. The peculiarities of these materials are various, considering their high specific surface area and low density, together with a highly porous three-dimensional structure and tunable surface chemistry. This review illustrates the recent progress in aerogels developed from cellulose and chitosan as emerging materials in water treatment. The potential of aerogel-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is reported in terms of adsorption efficacy and reusability. Despite various gaps affecting the manufacturing and production costs of aerogels that actually limit their successful implementation in the market, the research progress suggests that bio-based aerogels are ready to be used in water-treatment applications in the near future. Aerogels have recently started to be considered as "advanced materials"; therefore, as a general consideration, aerogels' toxicity testing should focus on their functionality which resides in their nanoscale open internal porosity. To assess the hazards of organic aerogels, testing at three levels may characterize their biophysical, in vitro and in vivo toxicity, defining distinct categories of aerogels. At the first level of testing, their abiotic characteristics are investigated, and the best aerogel(s) is forwarded to be tested at level 2, wherein in vitro methodologies may mainly evaluate the aerogels' cellular behavior. Within level 2 of testing, the main characteristics of toxicity are investigated and the selected aerogels are introduced to in vivo animal models at level 3. In the animal model testing, target organs are investigated along with systemic parameters of toxicity. Some study cases are presented for organic or anorganic aerogels. An increasing number of aerogels as nanostructured highly porous materials are entering the market in every day products, with an attractive portfolio of properties for emerging applications ranging from health care and leisure to electronics, cosmetics, energy, agriculture, food and environmental. However, the novelty in properties and forms of aerogels makes the development of a legislative framework particularly challenging for ensuring the safe development and use of nano-enabled products. The presented safety regulatory Compendium intends to share knowledge with the international aerogels community, as well as end-users and stakeholders, on the regulatory and safe handling procedures, as best safety practices, to be followed during the production process, handling, transport and end-use of aerogel-based formulations to mitigate human and environmental risks considering lack of data availability for this purpose in general. The increasingly intense consumption of plastics and, above all, their improper disposal in the environment are causing serious environmental concerns. Great efforts have been made for the development of new methods aimed at facilitating and speeding up the identification and sorting of different materials in the plastic recycling process. In this field, new strategies based on fluorescent tagging have been developed. This work concerns the synthesis and characterization of new fluorescent copolymers of polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS), which are among the most produced and consumed plastic materials. The synthesized copolymers are potentially suitable for use as fluorescent markers of PE and PS. Ethylene-co-N-pentenyl carbazole (P(E-co-PK)) and styrene-co-4-(N-carbazolyl)methyl styrene (P(S-co-SK)) copolymers were prepared by Ziegler–Natta and free radical polymerization, respectively. If excited at 300 nm, both P(E-co-PK)s and P(S-co-SK)s give fluorescence emissions resulting in them being optically active. Moreover, due to the low amount of fluorescent units, they show chemico-physical properties such as those of their corresponding homopolymers (PE and PS). P(E-co-PK)s and P(S-co-SK)s have been also tested as fluorescent markers of PE and PS. The experimental results demonstrate that from PE/P(E-co-PK) and PS/P(S-co-SK) blends prepared using only 1% by weight of fluorescent copolymer, distinguishable fluorescent emissions can be still detected. The selective detection of metal ions in water, using sustainable detection systems, is of crescent importance for monitoring water environments and drinking water safety. One of the key elements of future chemical sciences is the use of sustainable approaches in the design of new materials. In this study, we design and synthesize a low-cost, water-soluble potassium salt of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTAS), which shows a selective optical response on the addition of Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions in aqueous solutions. By using a water-soluble chromophore, the interactions with the metal ions are definitely more intimate and efficient, with respect to standard methods employing cosolvents. The detection limits of PTAS for both Cu2+ and Pb2+ are found to be 2 µM by using a simple absorbance mode, and even lower (1 μM) with NMR experiments, indicating that this analyte–probe system is sensitive enough for the detection of copper ions in drinking water and lead ions in waste water. The complexation of PTAS with both ions is supported with NMR studies, which reveal the formation of new species between PTAS and analytes. By combining a low-cost water-soluble chromophore with efficient analyte–probe interactions due to the use of aqueous solutions, the results here obtained provide a basis for designing sustainable sensing systems. We synthetized a new rod-coil block copolymer (BCP) based on the semiconducting polymerpoly({4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl}{3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl}) (PTB7) and poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP), tailored to produce water-processable nanoparticles (WPNPs) in blend with phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). The copolymer PTB7-b-P4VP was completely characterized by means of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to confirm the molecular structure. The WPNPs were prepared through an adapted miniemulsion approach without any surfactants. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal the nano-segregation of two active materials inside the WPNPs. The nanostructures appear spherical with a Janus-like inner morphology. PTB7 segregated to one side of the nanoparticle, while PC71BM segregated to the other side. This morphology was consistent with the value of the surface energy obtained for the two active materials PTB7-b-P4VP and PC71BM. The WPNPs obtained were deposited as an active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs). The films obtained were characterized by UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-vis), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). J-V characteristics of the WPNP-based devices were measured by obtaining a power conversion efficiency of 0.85%. A new amphiphilic perylene dye bearing two carboxylic and two amidic chains (PDA-CA) has been synthesized and the ability to form π–π driven aggregates or folded structures has been investigated in aqueous or organic solvents at different concentrations, by means of NMR spectroscopy, theoretical calculations and optical characterization. The 1H NMR data showed the coexistence of supramolecular aggregates due to a synergetic effect of π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions. The ratio between these species has been evaluated by concentration- and temperature-dependent 1H NMR experiments and also by the effect of aqueous or organic solvents. UV-Vis measurements are in agreement with NMR data evidencing the presence of more organized structures in organic solvents and aggregated species in aqueous solution. Novel allyl cobalt complexes, i.e., (η³-C4H7)(η4-C4H6)Co(PCyPh2) (1), (η³-C4H7)(η4-C4H6)Co(PMePh2) (2) and (η³-C5H9)(η4-C5H8)Co(PMePh2) (3), were synthesized by reacting CoCl2(PRPh2)2 (R = methyl, cyclohexyl) with 1,3-butadiene or isoprene in presence of metallic zinc. The complexes were fully characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (¹H and 2D experiments); in case of 1, single crystals, suitable for X-ray analysis, were obtained and the molecular structure was determined. The allyl cobalt phosphine complexes alone gave highly crystalline 1,2 polymers from 1,2-propadiene, but they did not polymerize 1,3-dienes. Nevertheless, in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of methylaluminoxane (MAO), they were able to polymerize 1,3-butadiene and substituted 1,3-butadienes such as isoprene, (E)-1,3-pentadiene, (E)-1,3-hexadiene, and (E)-3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene. Specifically, 1/MAO gave predominantly syndiotactic 1,2 polymers from 1,3-butadiene and terminally substituted 1,3-butadienes (e.g., 1,3-pentadiene and 1,3-hexadiene), but it was practically not active in the polymerization of internally substituted 1,3-butadienes (e.g., isoprene and 3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene); 2/MAO and 3/MAO exhibited instead an opposite behavior, giving predominantly isotactic 1,2 polymers from 3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene, and showing very low activity in the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene and 1,3-hexadiene. Perfectly alternating ethylene/propylene copolymers having different tacticity (i.e., isotactic and syndiotactic), which are difficult to synthesize by stereospecific copolymerization of the corresponding monomers, are obtained. In order to obtain new advanced functional materials capable of recognizing drug molecules, the polybenzofulvene backbone of molecular brush poly-6-MOEG-9-TM-BF3k has been functionalized with a "synthetic dynamic receptor" composed of two 1-adamantylurea moieties linked together by means of a dipropyleneamino bridge as in Meijer's bis(adamantylurea) pincer (BAUP). This functional material, bearing synthetic receptors potentially capable of recognizing/loading and then delivering drug molecules, was used to prepare colloidal drug delivery systems (by means of soft interaction with BAUP) for delivering the model anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOXO). The resulting nanostructured drug delivery systems containing the physically loaded drug were characterized in terms of drug loading and release, dimensions and zeta potential, and in vitro cell activity and uptake on two different cell lines (i.e. the human bronchial epithelial 16HBE and the human colon cancer HCT116). On normal cells, free DOXO was found to be more cytotoxic than DOXO-loaded nanogels at the higher tested concentration and, only on cancer cells, DOXO-loaded nanogels show similar or slightly higher cytotoxicity values than free DOXO, suggesting potential advantages in the treatment of cancer. These results were supported by fluorescence microscopy studies, which suggested that DOXO-loaded nanogels provide an extracellular reservoir of the drug, which is gradually released and internalized within the cells. Two new benzofulvene derivatives bearing a fluorene chromophore in different positions of the phenylindene scaffold were synthesized and induced to polymerize spontaneously. The photophysical investigation evidenced the role of the substitution topology of the monomeric units in the optical properties of the corresponding polymers. In particular, the polymer emission efficiency was found to improve both in solution and in the solid state when the fluorene residue enhances monomer conjugation and rigidity. The ability of this newly synthesized class of polymers to self-organize in supramolecular structures is evidenced through a study on blends with a benzothiadiazole based dye at different concentrations. Aggregation quenching processes of the dye are sharply reduced and complete resonant energy transfer from the polymer to the dye is reached even at 1% dye concentration. The peculiar ability of this new class of π-stacked polymers to self-assemble in such a supramolecular organization suggests their use as platforms for the design of more complex nanostructured films with enhanced optical and optoelectronic properties. Two novel benzofulvene monomers bearing propargyl or allyl groups have been synthesized by means of readily accessible reactions, and were found to polymerize spontaneously by solvent removal, in the apparent absence of catalysts or initiators, to give the corresponding polybenzofulvene derivatives bearing clickable propargyl or allyl moieties. The clickable propargyl and allyl groups were exploited in appropriate click reactions to develop a powerful and versatile 'grafting onto' synthetic methodology for obtaining tailored polymer brushes. Starch recovered from an agrifood waste, pea pods, was enzymatically modified and used to prepare cryogels applied as drug carriers. The enzymatic modification of starch was performed using the laccase/(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl TEMPO system, at a variable molar ratio. The characterization of the ensuing starches by solution NMR spectroscopy showed partial conversion of the primary hydroxyl groups versus aldehyde and carboxyl groups and successive creation of hemiacetal and ester bonds. Enzymatically modified starch after simple freezing and lyophilization process provided stable and compact cryogels with a morphology characterized by irregular pores, as determined by atomic force (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The application of cryogels as carriers of active molecules was successfully evaluated by following two different approaches of loading with drugs: a) as loaded sponge, by adsorption of drug from the liquid phase; and b) as dry-loaded cryogel, from a dehydration step added to loaded cryogel from route (a). The efficiency of the two routes was studied and compared by determining the drug release profile by proton NMR studies over time. Preliminary results demonstrated that cryogels from modified starch are good candidates to act as drug delivery systems due to their stability and prolonged residence times of loaded molecules, opening promising applications in biomedical and food packaging scenarios. The supplementation of goat diets with natural products to obtain milk with nutraceutical components is a common practice. In these last years, the influence of supplementation of specifically designed diets has been studied with different analytical tools in order to explore possible beneficial effects in human consumption of animal milk and milk-derived products. In this study, the lipid fraction of milk from Alpine goats undergoing different dietary regimens was studied by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Alpine goats were fed with linseed or hempseed supplements, and after 14 weeks of treatment, milk was collected and analyzed. Results showed that feeding diets supplemented with seeds positively affected the fatty acid composition with a pronounced increase in unsaturated fatty acids for both diets compared to a control diet. Specifically, linolenic acid content was more than doubled for linseed diet compared with the hempseed and control groups, while linoleic acid greatly increased only upon hempseed supplementation. However, a number of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers and higher levels of fatty acids with trans configuration were found in supplemented diets, particularly in the linseed diet. A new polymer brush was synthesized by spontaneous polymerization of benzofulvene macromonomer 6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k bearing a nona(ethylene glycol) side chain linked to the 3-phenylindene scaffold by means of a triazole heterocycle. The polymer structure was studied by SEC-MALS, NMR spectroscopy, and MALDI-TOF MS techniques, and the results supported the role of oligomeric initiatory species in the spontaneous polymerization of polybenzofulvene derivatives. The aggregation features of high molecular weight poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE were investigated by pyrene fluorescence analysis, dynamic light scattering studies, and transmission electron microscopy, which suggested a tendency towards the formation of spherical objects showing dimensions in the range of 20–200 nm. Moreover, poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE showed an interesting cytocompatibility in the whole concentration range tested that, besides its aggregation features, makes this polybenzofulvene brush a good polymer candidate for nanoencapsulation and delivery of drug molecules. Finally, the photo-physical features of poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE could allow the biodistribution of the resulting drug delivery systems to be monitored by fluorescence microscopy techniques.
