Heavy neutrinos were sought in pion decays $\pi^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu$ by examining the observed muon energy spectrum for extra peaks in addition to the expected peak for a massless neutrino. No evidence for heavy neutrinos was observed. Upper limits were set on the neutrino mixing matrix $|U_{\mu i}|^2$ in the neutrino mass region of 15.7--33.8 MeV/c$^2$, improving on previous results by an order of magnitude.

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments., Comment: Report of Working Group 3 of the CERN Workshop ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'', Geneva, Switzerland, November 2005 -- March 2007

- Abstract
A sample of 1.3 × 10
5 K+ → π0 e+ νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K
+ → π+ ν ν ¯ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ+ μ− pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c2 . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this paper we present new results on upper limits for the search of Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) with data collected by NA48/2 (2003-2004), NA62-RK (2007) and NA62 (2015) CERN experiments. The data collected with different trigger configuration allow to search for both long and short living heavy neutrinos in the mass range below the kaon mass. In addition the status of the search for K+ → π+vv with the NA62 detector will be briefly presented.

- Abstract
A sample of 2.8 × 10
4 K+ → π+ μ+ μ− candidates with negligible background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. The model-independent branching fraction is measured to be (9.15 ± 0.08) × 10−8 , a factor three more precise than previous measurements. The decay form factor is presented as a function of the squared dimuon mass. A measurement of the form factor parameters and their uncertainties is performed using a description based on Chiral Perturbation Theory at O (p6 ). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The NA62 experiment reports the branching ratio measurement BR K + → π + ν ν ¯ = 10.6 − 3.4 + 4.0 stat ± 0.9 syst × 10 − 11 at 68% CL, based on the observation of 20 signal candidates with an expected background of 7.0 events from the total data sample collected at the CERN SPS during 2016–2018. This provides evidence for the very rare K
+ → π + ν ν ¯ decay, observed with a significance of 3.4σ. The experiment achieves a single event sensitivity of (0.839 ± 0.054) × 10−11 , corresponding to 10.0 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10−11 . This measurement is also used to set limits on BR(K+ → π+ X), where X is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. Details are given of the analysis of the 2018 data sample, which corresponds to about 80% of the total data sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

A search for the K
+ → π+ X decay, where X is a long-lived feebly interacting particle, is performed through an interpretation of the K+ → π + ν ν ¯ analysis of data collected in 2017 by the NA62 experiment at CERN. Two ranges of X masses, 0–110 MeV/c2 and 154–260 MeV/c2 , and lifetimes above 100 ps are considered. The limits set on the branching ratio, BR(K+ → π+ X), are competitive with previously reported searches in the first mass range, and improve on current limits in the second mass range by more than an order of magnitude. In the present work of the PIENU experiment, heavy neutrinos were sought in pion decays pi(+) -> mu(+)nu at rest by examining the observed muon energy spectrum for extra peaks in addition to the expected peak for a light neutrino. No evidence for heavy neutrinos was observed. Upper limits were set on the neutrino mixing matrix vertical bar U-mu i vertical bar(2) in the neutrino mass region of 15.7-33.8 MeV/c(2), improving on previous results by an order of magnitude. - Abstract
The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports a study of a sample of 4 × 10
9 tagged π0 mesons from K+ → π+ π0 (γ), searching for the decay of the π0 to invisible particles. No signal is observed in excess of the expected background fluctuations. An upper limit of 4.4 × 10−9 is set on the branching ratio at 90% confidence level, improving on previous results by a factor of 60. This result can also be interpreted as a model- independent upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay K+ → π+ X, where X is a particle escaping detection with mass in the range 0.110–0.155 GeV/c2 and rest lifetime greater than 100 ps. Model-dependent upper limits are obtained assuming X to be an axion-like particle with dominant fermion couplings or a dark scalar mixing with the Standard Model Higgs boson. The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the K + → π + ν ν ¯ mode from a sample of K
+ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10−10 , corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10−11 . Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10−10 for the K + → π + ν ν ¯ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of ( 0.48 − 0.48 + 0.72 ) × 10−10 , are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements. The pion branching ratio, $R_{\pi } = \frac { {\Gamma }(\pi ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} \nu _{e} + \pi ^{+}\rightarrow e^{+} \nu _{e} \gamma )}{\Gamma (\pi ^{+} \rightarrow \mu ^{+} \nu _{\mu } + \pi ^{+} \rightarrow \mu ^{+} \nu _{\mu } \gamma )}$ , provides a sensitive test of lepton universality and constraints on many new physics scenarios. The theoretical uncertainty on the Standard Model prediction of R is 0.02 %, a factor of twenty smaller than the experimental uncertainty. The analysis of a subset of data taken by the PIENU experiment will be presented. The result, R = (1.2344 ± 0.0023( s t a t) ± 0.0019( s y s t)) ⋅ 10 [1], is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and represents a 0.1 % constraint on lepton non-universality. The PIENU experiment aims to measure the branching ratio of the charged pion decay with precision of < 0.1 %. This measurement is much sensitive to search for massive neutrinos coupled to electrons in ${\pi }^{+}{\rightarrow }e^{+}{\nu }_{e}$ decay. The initial analysis was completed and the upper limit on the neutrino mixing parameter | U | in the neutrino mass range of 0 to 55 MeV/ c was improved by a factor of 1.5, and the sensitivity for the mass range of 68 to 129 MeV/ c was improve by a factor of up to 4. - Abstract
The CRIPT project brings together several Canadian institutions, concerned with the detection of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM), addressing a requirement at ports-of-entry for detection of SNM in the many thousands of containers that flow into and out of Canada every day, while at the same time providing a way of monitoring the contents of nuclear waste storage containers, for waste management and non-proliferation reasons. The scale of these applications is large — typically tens of cubic metres, requiring detectors that can cover a large area at a minimum cost. The CRIPT project considered drift chambers adapted from high energy physics experience, as one of its technology choices. We report here on the performance of a full scale prototype, which covers an area of 2.4m × 1.2m with only 6 readout channels, and provides a 2D data point with accuracies (in x and z) of around 2 mm [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
The Cosmic Ray Inspection and Passive Tomography (CRIPT) collaboration has completed the testing of small muon detector prototypes and has commenced construction of a 12 layer, 4m2 prototype muon scattering tomography system. Three areas of CRIPT's progress are reported: (1) results from the testing of one of drift chamber muon detector prototypes; (2) algorithms for muon momentum estimation and tomographic image reconstruction; and (3) the status of the large prototype construction. The intrinsic resolution of the 2.4 m long, 1.2 m wide drift chamber muon detector prototype has been measured to be 1.73 mm perpendicular to the anode wire, and 2.9 mm parallel to the anode. A Bayesian estimator algorithm has been developed for muon momentum estimation. From simulations, the momentum resolution is expected to be highly asymmetric, varying from −18% to +92% integrated across the cosmic ray muon spectrum. A novel Point-of-Closest-Approach (PoCA) algorithm has also been developed for tomographic imaging. Multiple possible muon trajectories are assumed for each muon. The expected completion date for the construction is summer 2012, with first tomographic data following soon afterward. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The imaging performance of a high-resolution preclinical micro-positron emission tomography (micro-PET) system employing liquid xenon (LXe) as the gamma-ray detectionmediumwas simulated. The arrangement comprises a ring of detectors consisting of trapezoidal LXe time projection ionization chambers and two arrays of large area avalanche photodiodes for the measurement of ionization charge and scintillation light. A key feature of the LXePET system is the ability to identify individual photon interactions with high energy resolution and high spatial resolution in three dimensions and determine the correct interaction sequence using Compton reconstruction algorithms. The simulated LXePET imaging performance was evaluated by computing the noise equivalent count rate, the sensitivity and point spread function for a point source according to the NEMA-NU4 standard. The image quality was studied with a micro-Derenzo phantom. Results of these simulation studies included noise equivalent count rate peaking at 1326 kcps at 188 MBq (705 kcps at 184 MBq) for an energy windowof 450-600 keV and a coincidence windowof 1 ns formouse (rat) phantoms. The absolute sensitivity at the center of the field of view was 12.6%. Radial, tangential and axial resolutions of
22 Na point sources reconstructed with a list-mode maximum likelihood expectation maximization algorithm were ≤0.8 mm (full-width at half-maximum) throughout the field of view. Hot-rod inserts of <0.8 mm diameter were resolvable in the transaxial image of a micro-Derenzo phantom. The simulations show that a LXe system would provide new capabilities for significantly enhancing PET images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
