Background: A growing body of epidemiologic and toxicologic literature indicates that fine airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution is neurotoxic and threatens children's neurobehavioral development, resulting in reduced cognitive function. Understanding the magnitude of this effect is critical for establishing public health policies that will protect children's health, preserve human capital, and support societal progress. Objective: To quantify the association between ambient PM2.5 air pollution and loss of cognitive function in children, as measured by Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores, through a systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic literature search across seven databases: Agricultural and Environmental Science, BIOSIS Citation Index, Embase, GreenFILE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify original scientific studies that investigated the impact of PM2.5 exposure during pre-and postnatal periods on IQ loss during childhood. Using data from studies included for final review, we conducted a meta-analysis, using a random effects model to compute a beta coefficient that quantifies the overall effect of PM2.5 exposure on Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ), and Verbal IQ (VIQ). Findings: Of the 1,107 unique publications identified, six studies met the inclusion criteria for final review, representing 4,860 children across three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia). The mean PM2.5 concentration across all studies was 30.4 ± 24.4 µg/m3. Exposure timing ranged from the prenatal period to mid-childhood. Children were an average of 8.9 years old at the time of cognitive testing. We found that each 1 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration is associated with a -0.27 point change in FSIQ (p < 0.001), 0.39 point change in PIQ (p = 0.003), and -0.24 point change in VIQ (p = 0.021). Conclusion: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, we identified a statistically significant relationship between increased exposure to PM2.5 air pollution and reduced cognitive function in children, with the most pronounced impact on PIQ. This analysis will enable estimation of the burden of adverse neurobehavioral development attributable to PM2.5 in pediatric populations and will inform local and global strategies for exposure prevention. ABSTRACT Objective Methodology Findings Discussion This systematic review aims to comprehensively examine up‐to‐date evidence on the economic burden of eating disorders (EDs), both globally and by region.A comprehensive search within five electronic databases, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and EconLit, retrieved studies published from August 1, 2013, to June 30, 2024. Cost of illness (COI) studies, burden of disease, and other cost studies that reported costs in monetary values were included, and cost‐effectiveness analysis studies were excluded. The quality of COI studies was assessed using Schnitzler's checklist. All cost estimates were converted into 2024 USD purchasing power parity (PPP). The PROSPERO registration number is CRD42022358136.Twenty‐six studies were identified for inclusion in this review, with 11 COI studies. The nationwide annual financial cost of EDs is estimated at PPP‐USD 70.5 billion. Indirect costs contributed 70%–93% of total financial costs in the reviewed studies. Intangible costs (burden of disease) were estimated to be PPP‐USD 355.6 billion. About half of the COI studies met 60% of the elements of Schnitzler's checklist, either completely or partly.The number of COI studies has more than doubled in the last 10 years. Findings can inform healthcare administrators/policymakers to understand the magnitude of this burden when setting healthcare priorities and allocating resources to maximize social welfare. However, there are variations in the methods (thus quality) and perspectives used to assess this economic burden. Background: In the general population the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is 2–3%. There is growing awareness of how AIS affects the quality of life of patients. However, the extent of the societal burden AIS poses remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the societal burden of AIS. Methods: A cross-sectional burden of disease study was conducted using a bottom-up, prevalence-based approach. Patients with AIS or guardians of a child diagnosed with AIS residing in the Netherlands were eligible for inclusion. The survey was distributed between June - December 2022 and was completed once by each participant. Costs were assessed using the institute for Medical Technology Assessment - Medical Consumption and Productivity Cost Questionnaires. The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using the EuroQol 5D-5L/EuroQol 5D Youth and the Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised questionnaires. Costs and HRQoL were identified, measured, and valued. Results: Participants (n = 229) were predominantly female (92%), on average 35 years old, and were employed (65%). The societal cost for a patient with AIS in the Netherlands was €12,275 per year. The largest costs were estimated for the healthcare and productivity losses. The mean utility score for adults was 0.7 (SD 0.20). Severe pain was experienced by 10% of the adult participants and 44% reported to experience moderate pain/discomfort. Statistically significant differences between different age groups were present for the sector costs and HRQoL. Conclusions: AIS negatively impacts societal costs and the HRQoL. Background: In this study, we investigated the patient population of Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) in China, understood the basic situation, prevalence and diagnosis and treatment status of the patients, as well as the economic burden of the patients, and analyzed the influencing factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study focusing on patients with MPS II was conducted in China in 2023. Participants in the study were drawn from the Beijing Zhengyu Mucopolysaccharide Rare Disease Care Center, which is the only non-profit organization in mainland China registered with the civil affairs department that focuses on mucopolysaccharidosis. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, which included basic patient information, disease status, self-assessment of quality of life, diagnosis and treatment, as well as direct and indirect medical costs. The demographic and diagnosis and treatment profile of patients were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Furthermore, univariate and multiple linear regression were used to explore the economic burden and influencing factors of patients with MPS II. Results: The survival data of 145 patients were collected, the majority (98.62%) were male, and 78 were less than or equal to 10 years old. All patients were covered by medical insurance, mainly urban residents (135 cases). In terms of expenses, the 124 patients in the year before the survey incurred a total cost of about 14.7895 million yuan, and the direct economic burden accounted for 87.19%. Univariate analysis showed that age, number of hospitalizations, length of hospital stay, number of outpatient/emergency departments, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) were significantly associated with the economic burden of disease. Multiple regression analysis showed that the number of hospitalizations, days of hospitalization, number of outpatient/emergency departments and HSCT treatment were the main influencing factors. Conclusions: This study found that patients with MPS II were difficult to diagnose and easily misdiagnosed, their physical functions were impaired in many aspects. The existing treatment options are not sufficient in terms of economy and effectiveness, and there is also a lack of corresponding policy guarantees and support, which makes patients and their families have to face huge financial pressure. Despite being the most cost-effective tobacco control policy, tobacco taxation is the least implemented component of the World Health Organization MPOWER package to reduce smoking worldwide. In Mexico, both smoking prevalence and taxation have remained stable for more than a decade. This study aims to provide evidence about the potential effects of taxation to reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases and the main attributable social costs in Mexico, including informal (unpaid) care costs, which are frequently ignored. We employ a first-order Monte Carlo microsimulation model that follows hypothetical population cohorts considering the risks of an adverse health event and death. First, we estimate tobacco-attributable morbidity and mortality, direct medical costs and indirect costs, such as labour productivity losses and informal care costs. Then, we assess the potential effects of a 50% cigarette price increase through taxation and two alternative scenarios of 25% and 75%. The inputs come from several sources, including national surveys and vital statistics. Each year, 63 000 premature deaths and 427 000 disease events are attributable to tobacco in Mexico, while social costs amount to MX$194.6 billion (US$8.5)—MX$116.2 (US$5.1) direct medical costs and MX$78.5 (US$3.4) indirect costs—representing 0.8% of gross domestic product. Current tobacco tax revenue barely covers 23.3% of these costs. Increasing cigarette prices through taxation by 50% could reduce premature deaths by 49 000 over the next decade, while direct and indirect costs averted would amount to MX$87.9 billion (US$3.8) and MX$67.6 billion (US$2.9), respectively. The benefits would far outweigh any potential loss even in a pessimistic scenario of increased illicit trade. Tobacco use imposes high social costs on the Mexican population, but tobacco taxation is a win-win policy for both gaining population health and reducing tobacco societal costs. Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a malignant tumour with poor prognosis and high mortality, and high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) is considered to be one of its important risk factors. Methods: PC disease burden data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021) database. Annual percent change (APC), average APC (AAPC), and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were analysed using joinpoint linkpoint regression models to assess the trend of PC burden of disease between 1990 and 2021. An age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the independent effects of age, period, and cohort on PC burden, and data on PC mortality attributable to HFPG in China from 2022 to 2032 were analysed on the basis of a Bayesian age-period-cohort model projection. Results: The number of Pc deaths due to HFPG continue to rise in China from 1990 to 2021, with age-standardised mortality (ASMR) and age-standardised disability-adjusted life-year rates with increasing AAPC values of 1.12% (95% CI, 0.73-1.52) and 1.00% (95% CI, 0.63-1.37), respectively. Throughout the study, we found that the overall level of PC disease burden was significantly higher in men than that in women. In age-period-cohort analyses, the age effect of PC showed an increasing and then decreasing trend, the period effect showed an overall increasing trend during the study period, and the cohort effect showed an overall slow decreasing trend. In addition, the BAPC model predicted that ASMR is expected to decline significantly in both men and women from 2022 to 2032. Conclusions: It was found that PC attributable to HFPG was generally on the rise in China from 1990 to 2021 and has been on the decline in recent years, and projections suggest that the country's future PC disease burden will continue to show a downward trend. Age and period of birth are the main factors affecting the disease burden, especially in men and older age groups. Aims: The primary aim of this study was to characterize the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and identify the associated factors among children aged 2 to 18 in China diagnosed with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS). Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the HRQoL and caregiving burden of their caregivers and investigate the correlation between the HRQoL of the children and that of their caregivers. Methods: This study recruited 181 children diagnosed with INS from Children’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China. The proxy-reported PedsQL Generic Core Module (PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM) was used to measure the HRQoL of children, and the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire, five-level version (EQ-5D-5L) was applied to measure caregivers’ HRQoL. Differences in scale scores and total scores of PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM were assessed using t-tests and one-way ANOVA. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with children’s HRQoL. Pearson correlation analysis evaluated the correlation between children’s HRQoL and caregiver’s HRQoL. Results: HRQoL of Children with INS declines with increasing age, and children aged 5-18 had lower scores in physical functioning, emotional functioning, school functioning, psychosocial health summary score, and total PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM score compared to healthy children. Various factors, including the mother filling out the questionnaire, the father being unemployed, and the use of other medications except for steroids, were associated with worse HRQoL of children (p values < 0.05). Additionally, a correlation exists between children’s HRQoL and their caregivers’ HRQoL. Conclusion: This study evaluated the HRQoL of children aged 2-18 years diagnosed with INS in China, along with the HRQoL of their caregivers. Multiple factors potentially influence the HRQoL of children. A significant correlation was observed between the HRQoL of children and their caregivers, who frequently experienced varying levels of caregiving burden. Background: Rising trends in early-onset Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) and Other pharyngeal cancer (OPC) burden had been observed. This study aimed to evaluate the burdens of LOC and OPC attributable to tobacco and alcohol in young adults aged 15-49 years from 1990 to 2040. Methods: Tobacco- and alcohol-attributable death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for LOC and OPC and the corresponding population-attributable fraction were obtained from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 for individuals aged 15-49 years. Estimated annual percent change was calculated to quantify the temporal trend of disease burden between 1990 and 2019. The Bayesian ageperiod- cohort model was used to predict the age-standardized mortality rate from 2020 to 2040. Results: In 2019, an estimated 16,887 deaths and 799,495 DALYs for tobaccoand alcohol-attributable early-onset LOC, and 8,402 deaths and 386,418 DALYs for early-onset OPC attributable to tobacco and alcohol were reported globally. Despite the global decrease in age-standardized mortality and DALYs rates of tobacco- and alcohol-attributable LOC and OPC in young adults aged 15-49 years between 1990 and 2019, certain regions experienced increases, such as regions of Asia, Eastern Europe, and Western Sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, a growing age-standardized mortality in individuals aged <34 years was found. The socio-demographic index level was positively associated with a faster reduction of early-onset LOC and OPC DALYs attributable to alcohol use and smoking, except for that due to chewing tobacco. Furthermore, projections have also indicated an expected increase in the age-standardized mortality for tobaccoand alcohol-attributable early-onset LOC and OPC. Conclusions: Significant regional and demographic disparities in tobacco and alcohol-related early-onset LOC and OPC burden and their attributable proportion highlight a need for tailored age- and region-appropriate interventions to reduce the future LOC and OPC burden among young adults. Objective To describe and analyze the burden and changing trends of ischemic heart disease(IHD)attributed to dietary risks in China from 1990 to 2021, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of IHD in China. [WTHZ]Methods [WTBZ]Standardized DALY rates and standardized mortality rates for IHD in China from 1990 to 2021 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease database(GBD 2021).[WTHZ]Results [WTBZ]In 2021, the standardized DALYs rate and mortality rate of IHD attributed to dietary risks in China were 820.87 and 44.26 per 100,000 respectively, showing a decrease of 14.45% and 5.24% compared to 1990. China's rates were only higher than regions with high sociodemographic index and lower than global and other regional levels. Dietary risks were significantly higher in males compared to females, with the main risk factors being high-sodium diet, lowwholegrain diet, and high omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid diet. Both DALYs rate and mortality rate increased significantly with age. The overall trend from 1990 to 2021 shows a decline in the standardized DALYs rate and mortality rate of IHD attributed to dietary factors in China, with an Average Annual Percentage Change(AAPC) of 0.54% and 0.24% respectively. To alleviate the burden of IHD, it is essential to enhance health education for males and middle-aged and elderly populations, increasing their awareness of IHD prevention and control. Background Unlike influenza, information on the burden of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) as a cause of hospitalizations in adults with acute respiratory illness (ARI) is limited. Methods We compared the population-based incidence, seasonality, and clinical characteristics of these 2 viral infections among adults aged ≥20 years with ARI hospitalizations in Auckland, New Zealand, during 2012–2015 through the Southern Hemisphere Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Research and Surveillance (SHIVERS) project. Results Of the 14 139 ARI hospitalizations, 276 of 6484 (4.3%) tested positive for HMPV and 1342 of 7027 (19.1%) tested positive for influenza. Crude rates of 9.8 (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.7–11.0) HMPV-associated and 47.6 (95% CI, 45.1–50.1) influenza-associated ARI hospitalizations were estimated for every 100 000 adult residents annually. The highest rates for both viruses were in those aged ≥80 years, of Māori or Pacific ethnicity, or living in low socioeconomic status (SES) areas. HMPV infections were more common than influenza in those with chronic medical conditions. Conclusions Although HMPV infections accounted for fewer hospitalizations than influenza in adults aged ≥20 years, HMPV-associated ARI hospitalization rates were higher than influenza in older adults, Māori and Pacific people, and those of low SES. Background: A large fraction of the disease burden in the Italian population is due to behavioral risk factors. The objective of this work is to provide a tool to estimate the impact of preventive interventions that reduce the exposure to smoking and sedentary lifestyle of the Italian population, with the goal of selecting optimal interventions. Methods: We construct a Markovian model that simulates the state of each subject of the Italian population. The model predicts the distribution of subjects in each health status and risk factor status for every year of the simulation. Based on this distribution, the model provides a rich output summary, such as the number of incident and prevalent cases for each tracing disease and the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY), used to assess the impact of preventive interventions, and how this impact is shaped in time. Results: This paper focuses on the methodological aspects of the model. The proposed model is flexible and can be applied to estimate the impact of complex interventions on the two risk factors and adapted to consider different cohorts. We validate the model by simulating the evolution of the Italian population from 2009 to 2017 and comparing the output with historical data. Furthermore, as a case-study, we simulate a counterfactual scenario where both tobacco and sedentary lifestyle are eradicated from the Italian population in 2019 and estimate the impact of such intervention over the following 20 years. Conclusions: We propose a Markovian model to estimate how interventions on smoking and sedentary lifestyle can affect the reduction of the disease burden, and validate the model on historical data. The model is flexible and allows to extend the analysis to consider more risk factors in future research. However, we are aware that, given the ever-increasing availability of data, it is necessary in the future to increase the complexity of the model, to be closer to reality and to provide decision-making support to the policy-makers. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a concerning public health issue, affecting people regardless of their sex, age, or socioeconomic status. We aimed to analyze the burden of female CKD in Mexico between 1990 and 2021, expressed in terms of years lived with disability (YLDs), mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Additionally, we evaluated the relationship between DALYs and the Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) and the Healthcare Access and Quality Index (HAQI). Methods: Secondary data analysis from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021. We used mortality, years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs to analyze CKD in women between 1990 and 2021. We used a log-linear segmented regression model to analyze trends in female CKD DALY rates over time. The information was disaggregated by age groups and sub-causes nationally and across the 32 states. Age-standardized rates (ASR) were used. Results: Between 1990 and 2021, the ASR mortality and ASR-DALYs due to CKD increased significantly at the national level. The DALYs are almost entirely explained by YLLs, indicating that a large proportion of women with CKD in Mexico die prematurely. Disparities in the burden of this disease were observed across different states and age groups within the country. In 2021, the highest ASR-DALY rate was recorded in Tabasco (1,972.0), while the lowest was in Sinaloa (865.1). The SDI and HAQI were associated with the CKD DALYs in most states. Conclusions: Mexican women experience a significant burden due to CKD, reflected in premature deaths and years lived with disability, while disparities between states need to be addressed to reduce inequities. Over the past 32 years, improvements in socioeconomic indicators and the quality and access to healthcare have not contributed to reducing the DALYs rate due to CKD, indicating a need to redirect policies to impact women's well-being and health positively. Objective: Uterine cancer (UC) is one of the prevalent malignancies in the female reproductive system. Estimating the burden trends of UC is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies at the national level. However, there has been no comprehensive analysis of the UC burden in China. We focused on the evaluation of the burden trends of UC in China over the past 32 years to provide a 15-year projection, comparing it with global levels. Methods: Data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were extracted from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 to describe the burden of UC in China. Joinpoint regression analysis was employed to describe the temporal trends of UC in China and globally over the past 32 years. A Bayesian age-period-cohort model was utilized to predict the trends of UC in the next 15 years. Spearman correlation analysis was used to compare the relationship between ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, ASDR, and SDI in UC in China and globally. Changes in ASMR and ASDR in UC caused by high BMI in China and globally from 1990 to 2021 were explored. Results: In 2021, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) of UC in China were 6.65, 46.52, 1.24, and 37.86 (per 100,000 population) respectively. Compared to 1990, the ASMR and ASDR decreased by 48.63% and 48.15% respectively, while the ASIR and ASPR increased by 17.79% and 37.67% respectively. Globally, the burden of UC followed a similar trend in China, with increasing ASIR and ASPR, and decreasing ASMR and ASDR, although the magnitude of increase and decrease was smaller than in China. Joinpoint regression analysis results showed an overall upward trend in ASIR and ASPR for both China and global UC, while an overall downward trend was observed in ASMR and ASDR. Age-specific analysis revealed that during the period from 1990 to 2021, the age groups with the highest incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs for UC in China generally occurred at earlier ages compared to the global pattern. It is projected that over the next 15 years, the burden of UC in China will continue to increase at a higher rate than the global level. Spearman correlation analysis showed that ASIR and ASPR of UC in China and the world were significantly positively correlated with SDI (p < 0.05), and ASMR and ASDR were significantly negatively correlated with SDI (p < 0.001). High BMI is a risk factor affecting the mortality rate and DALYs of UC in both China and globally, with the increase in ASMR and ASDR due to high BMI being greater in China than globally. Conclusion: The incidence and prevalence burden of UC among Chinese and global women have shown an increasing trend over the past 32 years, while the mortality and DALYs have decreased. The projected burden of UC in China is anticipated to continue rising at a higher rate than the global level over the next 15 years. Background Methods Results Conclusions Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating chronic inflammatory disease with significant impact upon quality of life. Generic quality‐of‐life measures suffer from decreased face validity and content validity, leading to the development of disease‐specific quality‐of‐life measures such as the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Quality of Life (HiSQOL) outcome measure. The aim of this study was to validate the use of the HiSQOL in the Australian population and evaluate the quality‐of‐life impact in HS patients in Australia.A total of 301 patients were recruited and consented to be involved in this study. All participants were invited to complete the HiSQOL questionnaire along with basic demographic and disease information, the DLQI and HADS anxiety and depression scale. Participants were then asked to repeat the questionnaires 14 days later to assess test–retest reliability.The mean HiSQOL score was 46.5 out of a possible total score of 76 (SD = 24.2) indicating a very large impact on quality of life. Based upon the published validity bands this corresponds to a very large impact on quality of life. Validation statistics indicated a high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.956) with expected levels of convergent validity and excellent test–retest reliability (p = 0.95). Multiple regression analysis indicated individuals with a younger age of onset and positive family history had significantly greater quality‐of‐life impact as measured by the HiSQOL.The HiSQOL is a valid, reliable measure for assessing the quality‐of‐life impact of HS. Significant factors influencing quality of life include age of onset and family history. Longitudinal measurements will enable evaluation of the impact of therapy upon QOL in the Australian context. Background: Lung cancer (LC) is among the most common neoplasms, mostly caused by smoking. This study, carried out within the ACAB project, aims to provide local, updated and systematic estimates of years lived with disability (YLD) from LC due to smoking in the Tuscany region, Italy. Methods: We estimated YLD for the year 2022 for the whole region and at subregional level by local health unit (LHU) using data from the Tuscany Cancer Registry and local surveys. YLD were calculated by applying the severity-specific LC prevalence, estimated with an incidence-based disease model, to the corresponding disability weight. The burden from smoking was computed by: modelling the prevalence of smokers with a Bayesian Dirichlet-Multinomial regression model; estimating the distribution of smokers by pack-years simulating individual smoking histories; collecting relative risks from the literature. Results: In 2022 in Tuscany, LC caused 7.79 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] = 2.26, 17.27) and 25.50 (95% UI = 7.30, 52.68) YLDs per 100,000 females and males, respectively, with slight variations by LHU, and 53% and 66% of the YLDs were caused by smoking. Conclusion: The updated estimates of the burden of LC attributable to smoking for the Tuscany region as a whole and for each LHU provide indications to inform strategic prevention plans and set public health priorities. Objective: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. This study aims is to investigate the burden of breast cancer in Iran and its relationship with the Human Development Index (HDI) during 2009 to 2019. Study design: The present study is an observational study in Iran during the years 2009 to 2019. Data related to the incidence, mortality, Years of Life with Disability (YLD), Years of Life Lost (YLL) and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years (DALY) of breast cancer in Iran were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD-2019) website. Correlation tests are used to check the relationship between these indicators and the human development index. Results: The highest incidence rate of breast cancer in 2019 is related to the provinces of Gilan (29 per 100,000) and Tehran (28.55 per 100,000) and the highest rate of death from breast cancer is related to the provinces of Gilan (10.71 per 100,000). and Semnan (9.97 in 100,000). The results showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between DALY (r = 0.626, P < 0.0001), YLL (r = 0.611, P < 0.0001) and, YLD (r = 0.773, P < 0.0001) breast cancer with HDI index. There is a positive and significant correlation between the incidence (r = 0.794, P < 0.0001) and mortality (r = 0.503, P = 0.003) of breast cancer with the HDI index. Conclusions: Considering that a positive correlation was observed between the incidence and burden of breast cancer and the human development index in the country, it is suggested to implement preventive measures such as public education programs to reduce the incidence and burden of breast cancer and the necessity of screening programs in areas with low human development index. Background: The burden of common urologic diseases, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary tract infections (UTI), urolithiasis, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and prostate cancer, varies both geographically and within specific regions. It is essential to conduct a comprehensive and precise assessment of the global burden of urologic diseases. Methods: We obtained data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for the aforementioned urologic diseases by age, sex, location, and year from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021. We analyzed the burden associated with urologic diseases based on socio-demographic index (SDI) and attributable risk factors. The trends in burden over time were assessed using estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) along with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: In 2021, BPH and UTI were the leading causes of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), with rates of 5531.88 and 2782.59 per 100,000 persons, respectively. Prostate cancer was the leading cause of both age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR), with rates of 12.63 and 217.83 per 100,000 persons, respectively. From 1990 to 2021, there was an upward trend in ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, and ASDR for UTI, while urolithiasis showed a downward trend. The middle and low-middle SDI quintile levels exhibited higher incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs related to UTI, urolithiasis, and BPH, while the high and high-middle SDI quintile levels showed higher rates for the three cancers. The burden of these six urologic diseases displayed diverse age and sex distribution patterns. In 2021, a high body mass index (BMI) contributed to 20.07% of kidney cancer deaths worldwide, while smoking accounted for 26.48% of bladder cancer deaths and 3.00% of prostate cancer deaths. Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a highly prevalent disease with a chronic nature and poses a significant health burden worldwide, with no exception in Pakistan. Hence, this study aimed to explore the financial burden of T2DM in Pakistan through cost of illness analysis. Methods: A prevalence-based, cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured data collection tool from the patient's perspective. Through structured interviews by trained data collectors, the data regarding direct medical costs, direct non-medical costs, and indirect costs were collected and further verified through prescriptions and bills. After testing the normality of data, mean and median with interquartile range were used to present cost data, while non-parametric tests, i.e., the Mann–Whitney U test and the Kruskal–Wallis test, were used to assess factors associated with costs, as cost data were not normally distributed. Results: The study included 522 participants, with a majority being female (54%) and aged between 41 and 60 years (64%). The mean annual total cost per patient was USD 235.1 (median = USD 162.8), comprising direct medical costs, 93.2% (mean = USD 219.2; median = USD 150.0), direct non-medical costs, 5.3% (mean = USD 12.4; median = USD 7.1), and indirect costs, 1.5% (mean = USD 3.5; median = USD 1.9). Costs were significantly higher for patients with advanced age, high literacy, higher household incomes, duration of diabetes, more than one complication, and using combination therapy. Conclusions: The economic burden of T2DM in Pakistan is substantial, with medication costs being the largest component. This study evaluated the health implications and oncological impact of consuming glycidyl esters (GE) and 3-monochloro-1,2-propanediol esters (3-MCPDE) in selected Asian and European populations. Data on dietary GE and 3-MCPDE were compiled from 10 studies conducted in China, Taiwan, Poland, and Spain, identified through a systematic search in PubMed and ScienceDirect databases from 2012 to 2022. Studies on food supplements and analytical methods were excluded from the analysis. Health metrics for these nations, spanning 2015 to 2019, were sourced from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, among others. A Monte Carlo Simulation was employed for data analysis. The results showed that "grains and grain products" was the most consumed food category (260.45-395.35 g/day), whereas "food for infants and children" was the least consumed (0.01-0.09 g/day). Additionally, "fats from animal or plant origin" had the highest contamination levels. While 3-MCPDE exposures remained within safe limits, median GE exposure correlated with an incidence of colon cancer ranging from 3.66 × 10−8 to 0.744%, lung cancer from 0.00256 to 0.287%, and breast cancer from 0.0262 to 2.42% within the study areas. This translated to a total cancer burden of 6.69 to 1020 Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) per 100 000 individuals. The population in China recorded the highest DALY rate (1,020), followed by Spain (30.2), Poland (19.7), and Taiwan (6.69). Projections suggest an uptick in GE-related cancer cases and associated burdens in the coming decades attributed to demographic shifts, ageing populations, and dietary changes. Background: Having previously shown headache disorders to be prevalent in Mongolia, here we elaborate on headache as a public-health concern in this country, reporting symptom burden and headache-attributed impaired participation at individual and societal levels, and conducting a health-care needs assessment. Methods: The study followed the standardized methodology developed by the Global Campaign against Headache, generating a representative general-population sample through multi-level randomized cluster sampling. Participants aged 18–65 years were interviewed at unannounced household visits by interviewers administering the HARDSHIP questionnaire. Symptom burden was established through questions on frequency, duration and intensity of headache, with proportion of time in ictal state calculated from frequency and duration. Individual impaired participation was established through the HALT questionnaire, enquiring into lost time from paid and household work and from leisure activities. Symptom burden and impaired participation yesterday were also assessed in those reporting headache yesterday. Population-level estimates were derived by factoring in prevalence. Results: The total sample included 2,043 participants. Those reporting any headache in the last year (n = 1,351) spent, on average, 9.7% of all their time with headache, losing 1.3 workdays and 2.4 household days/3 months. These losses were considerably higher among those with probable medication-overuse headache (37.5%, 3.5 workdays, 6.7 household days) or other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+) (21.9%, 2.4 workdays, 5.1 household days). At population-level (including those with and without headache), 6.2–7.4% of all time was spent with headache, 3.1% with H15+; 0.8 workdays and 1.4 household days/person/3 months were lost to headache, 0.3 workdays and 0.6 household days to migraine (the biggest contributor of all headache types). Our needs assessment estimated that one third (33.2%) of the adult population of Mongolia have headache (mostly migraine or H15+) likely to benefit from health care. Conclusion: This first population-based study on headache burden in Mongolia shows high levels of individual and societal burden, with H15 + the cause of greater burden at population level than migraine and TTH combined. Migraine, however, has the biggest impact on the nation's productivity. Globally, cancer is the second leading cause of death, with a growing burden also observed in Kazakhstan. This study evaluates the burden of common cancers in Almaty, Kazakhstan's major city, from 2017 to 2021, utilizing data from the Information System of the Ministry of Health. In Kazakhstan, most common cancers among men include lung, stomach, and prostate cancer, while breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers are predominant among women. Employing measures like disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), we found that selected cancer types accounted for a total DALY burden of 25,016.60 in 2021, with mortality contributing more than disability (95.2% vs. 4.7%) with the ratio of non-fatal to fatal outcomes being 1.4 times higher in women than in men. The share of non-fatal burden (YLD) proportion within DALYs increased for almost all selected cancer types, except stomach and cervical cancer over the observed period in Almaty. Despite the overall increase in cancer burden observed during the time period, a downward trend in specific cancers suggests the efficacy of implemented cancer control strategies. Comparison with global trends highlights the significance of targeted interventions. This analysis underscores the need for continuous comprehensive cancer control strategies in Almaty and Kazakhstan, including vaccination against human papillomavirus, stomach cancer screening programs, and increased cancer awareness initiatives. Introduction: Liver cancer (LC) is frequently preceded by cirrhosis and poses a significant public health challenge in the United States (US). Recent decades have seen notable shifts in the epidemiological patterns of LC, yet national data guiding the optimal allocation of resources and preventive efforts remain limited. This study aims to investigate the current trends, risk factors, and outcomes of LC in the US. Methods: This study utilized the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) dataset to collect data on the annual incident cases, deaths, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-standardized death rates, and age-standardized DALY rates of primary LC and its etiologies and risk factors, between 1990 and 2019. Percentage changes in incident cases, DALYs, and deaths and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in ASIR and deaths rates of LC were calculated to conduct temporal analysis. Linear regression was applied for the calculation of EAPCs. Correlations of EAPC with socio-demographic index (SDI) were separately evaluated by Pearson correlation analyses. Results: We observed a marked increase in the ASIR of LC, increasing from 2.22 (95% CI: 2.15–2.27) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 5.23 (95% CI: 4.28–6.29) per 100,000 people in 2019, a percentage change of 135.4%. LC due to hepatitis C followed by alcohol use were the primary factors driving this increase. The ASIR and age-standardized death rates of LC showed a significant average annual increase of 3.0% (95% CI: 2.7–3.2) and 2.6% (95% CI: 2.5–2.8), respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between the SDI and the EAPC in ASIR (ρ = -0.40, p = 0.004) and age-standardized death rates (ρ = -0.46, p < 0.001). In 2019, drug and alcohol use, followed by elevated body mass index (BMI) were the primary risk factors for age-standardized DALY rates attributable to LC. Conclusion: The increased burden of LC in the US highlights the need for interventions. This is particularly important given that LC is mostly influenced by modifiable risk factors, such as drug and alcohol use, and elevated BMI. Our findings highlight the urgent need for public health interventions targeting socio-economic, lifestyle, and modifiable risk factors to mitigate the escalating burden of LC. Background: Leukemia is the tenth most common cause of cancer death worldwide and one of the most important causes of disability. To understand the current status and changing trends of the disease burden of leukemia at the global, regional, and national levels, and to provide a scientific basis for the development of leukemia prevention and treatment strategies. Methods: Based on open data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019), R software was used to calculate estimated annual percentage changes to estimate trends in the age‐standardized incidence (ASIR) and the age‐standardized disability‐adjusted life years (DALY) rate due to leukemia and its major subtypes from 1990 to 2019. Results: In 2019, globally, the number of incidences and DALYs of leukemia were 643.6 × 103 (587.0 × 103, 699.7 × 103) and 11,657.5 × 103 (10529.1 × 103, 12700.7 × 103), respectively. The ASIR (estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) = −0.37, 95%UI −0.46 to −0.28) and the age‐standardized DALY rate (EAPC = −1.72, 95%UI −1.80 to −1.65) of leukemia showed a decreasing trend from 1990 to 2019. The APC model analysis showed that the age effect of leukemia risk was a "U"‐shaped distribution of relative risk (RR) with increasing age from 1990 to 2019, globally. The time effect was an increase in incidence rate with increasing years but a decrease in DALY rate with increasing years. The cohort effects of both incidence and DALY rates tended to increase and then decrease with the development of the birth cohort. In 1990 and 2019, smoking, high body‐mass index, occupational exposure to benzene, and occupational exposure to formaldehyde were risk factors for DALY in leukemia, especially in areas with high SDI. Conclusions: From 1990 to 2019, the disease burden of leukemia showed a decreasing trend, but it is worth noting that its overall severity is still very high. The disease burden of leukemia varies greatly from region to region, and exclusive strategies for the prevention and treatment of leukemia should be developed according to the economic and cultural development of each region. Cystic fibrosis (CF) contributes a significant economic burden on individuals, healthcare systems, and society. Understanding the economic impact of CF is crucial for planning resource allocation. We conducted a scoping review of literature published between 1990 and 2022 that reported the cost of illness, and/or economic burden of CF. Costs were adjusted for inflation and reported as United States dollars. A total of 39 studies were included. Direct healthcare costs (e.g., medications, inpatient and outpatient care) were the most frequently reported. Most studies estimated the cost of CF using a prevalence-based (n = 18, 46.2 %), bottom-up approach (n = 23, 59 %). Direct non-healthcare costs and indirect costs were seldom included. The most frequently reported direct cost components were medications (n = 34, 87.2 %), inpatient care (n = 33, 84.6 %), and outpatient care (n = 31, 79.5 %). Twenty-eight percent (n = 11) of studies reported the burden of CF from all three perspectives (healthcare system (payer), individual, and society). Indirect costs of CF were reported in approximately 20 % of studies (n = 8). The reported total cost of CF varied widely, ranging from $451 to $160,000 per person per year (2022 US$). The total cost depended on the number of domains and perspectives included in each study. Most studies only reported costs to the healthcare system (i.e., hospitalizations and healthcare encounters) which likely underestimates the total costs of CF. Introduction: Alcohol remains a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity in Finland and the Baltic countries, particularly among men. This study aimed to assess alcohol policy restrictiveness in this region from 1995 to 2019 using a modified version of the Bridging the Gap (BtG‐M) policy scale and examine its association with alcohol‐related disease burden. Methods: The study utilised national laws to score policy restrictiveness (higher BtG‐M scores mean stricter policies) and age‐standardised rates of disability‐adjusted life years (DALY), years of life lost, years lived with disability and deaths per 100,000 from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD). Spearman correlation tests and panel data regression models were applied to assess the association between policy score and burden of disease. Results: Finland maintained a high BtG‐M score, while the Baltic countries experienced recent increases from initially lower scores. Alcohol‐related disease burden showed an inverse association with policy changes in these countries. Strongest association was seen between the BtG‐M score and DALY rates attributed to injuries. Premature mortality among men constituted the largest proportion of disease burden. Discussion and Conclusions: Despite challenges in accessing and comparing policy data over time, we showed a strong association between alcohol policy and alcohol‐related harm in Finland and the Baltic countries. This study is one of the first to use the BtG‐M scale to monitor changes in alcohol policies over time and their relationship to alcohol‐related harm using GBD methodology. Purpose: Mental disorders remain the leading causes of disability worldwide. We aimed to determine the burden and trends of mental disorders in China from 1990 to 2019. Methods: The incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of mental disorders at national level of China were examined by age, sex, and subcategories. Temporal trends in the age-standardized rates for incidence, prevalence, and DALYs were assessed by the average annual percentage change (AAPC). All estimates are presented as numbers and age-standardized rates, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). Results: The number of incident cases due to mental disorders increased from 42.90 million to 52.72 million, the number of prevalent cases increased from 132.63 million to 160.16 million, and the number of DALYs increased from 15.64 million to 20.29 million during 1990–2019. Decreasing trends were observed in the age-standardized rates for incidence, prevalence and DALYs. Anxiety and depressive disorders were more frequent in women, while ADHD, conduct disorder, and autism spectrum disorders were more common in men. Compared with 1990, the age-specific incidence rates were higher in individuals under 14 years and over 55 years, whereas rates were lower in those aged 15–49 years in 2019. Conclusion: The number of incident cases, prevalent cases, and DALYs due to mental disorders gradually increased in China from 1990 to 2019. Anxiety and depressive disorders were the leading causes of burden due to mental disorders, which affected women more than men. Abstract Background A growing body of epidemiologic and toxicologic literature indicates that fine airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution is neurotoxic and threatens children’s neurobehavioral development, resulting in reduced cognitive function. Understanding the magnitude of this effect is critical for establishing public health policies that will protect children’s health, preserve human capital, and support societal progress. Objective To quantify the association between ambient PM2.5 air pollution and loss of cognitive function in children, as measured by Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores, through a systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic literature search across seven databases: Agricultural and Environmental Science, BIOSIS Citation Index, Embase, GreenFILE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify original scientific studies that investigated the impact of PM2.5 exposure during pre-and postnatal periods on IQ loss during childhood. Using data from studies included for final review, we conducted a meta-analysis, using a random effects model to compute a beta coefficient that quantifies the overall effect of PM2.5 exposure on Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ), and Verbal IQ (VIQ). Findings Of the 1,107 unique publications identified, six studies met the inclusion criteria for final review, representing 4,860 children across three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia). The mean PM2.5 concentration across all studies was 30.4 ± 24.4 µg/m3. Exposure timing ranged from the prenatal period to mid-childhood. Abstract Background Bone fractures are a global public health issue and a major source of significant illness and financial hardship. However, to date, there is limited research on patella, tibia or fibula, or ankle fractures (FPTFA) disease burden. Methods Using the framework of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, we conducted temporal trends of disease burden, effects of sex and socio-demographic index (SDI) on age standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) and age-period-cohort model. Machine learning models were built to predict the ASPR of FPTFA in 2035. Results In 1990 and 2019, the top three of all fractures with the highest ASPR was FPTFA. Globally, in 2019, there were 13529.45 million (95%UI: 11811.02, 15642.25), 9198.67 million (95%UI: 8518.9, 10009.91) and 77.54 million (95%UI: 34.09, 149.9) prevalent cases of fracture attributable to fall, transport injury and mechanical external force, respectively. The number of fracture prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs), and ASPR were higher in males than in females. From 1990 to 2019, most of GBD regions showed a downward trend in average annual percent change (AAPC) of ASPR attributable to transport injuries, High-income Asia Pacific had the highest decline (AAPC= -1.81%, 95%CI: -1.89% to -1.74%). However, an upward trend in East Asia was observed (AAPC = 1.60%, 95%CI: 1.48-1.73%). With increasing SDI, the ASPR for FPTFA attributed to the fall and mechanical external force slowly increased and then turned downward, especially in high-income and high-SDI countries. The longitudinal age curve suggested that the attributed rate was increased for the three sites of lower limb fractures. The best predictive models for FPTFA caused by falls, transport injuries and mechanical external force were autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) (0,2,1), ARIMA (2,0,1) and ARIMA (0,2,2), with R2 of 0.96, 0.78 and 0.94, respectively. By 2035, ASPR for the fall-related FPTFA will continue to rise rapidly, whereas the ASPR of the transport injury-related FPTFA will gradually decrease. Conclusion FPTFA attributed to the falls is the dominant type and the burden and trends of the fall-related FPTFA are substantial. Fall prevention and access to treatment are crucial for reducing FPTFA burden.

Abstract Background In this study, we investigated the patient population of Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) in China, understood the basic situation, prevalence and diagnosis and treatment status of the patients, as well as the economic burden of the patients, and analyzed the influencing factors. Methods A cross-sectional study focusing on patients with MPS II was conducted in China in 2023. Participants in the study were drawn from the Beijing Zhengyu Mucopolysaccharide Rare Disease Care Center, which is the only non-profit organization in mainland China registered with the civil affairs department that focuses on mucopolysaccharidosis. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, which included basic patient information, disease status, self-assessment of quality of life, diagnosis and treatment, as well as direct and indirect medical costs. The demographic and diagnosis and treatment profile of patients were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Furthermore, univariate and multiple linear regression were used to explore the economic burden and influencing factors of patients with MPS II. Results The survival data of 145 patients were collected, the majority (98.62%) were male, and 78 were less than or equal to 10 years old. All patients were covered by medical insurance, mainly urban residents (135 cases). In terms of expenses, the 124 patients in the year before the survey incurred a total cost of about 14.7895 million yuan, and the direct economic burden accounted for 87.19%. Univariate analysis showed that age, number of hospitalizations, length of hospital stay, number of outpatient/emergency departments, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) were significantly associated with the economic burden of disease. Multiple regression analysis showed that the number of hospitalizations, days of hospitalization, number of outpatient/emergency departments and HSCT treatment were the main influencing factors. Conclusions This study found that patients with MPS II were difficult to diagnose and easily misdiagnosed, their physical functions were impaired in many aspects. The existing treatment options are not sufficient in terms of economy and effectiveness, and there is also a lack of corresponding policy guarantees and support, which makes patients and their families have to face huge financial pressure.

Abstract Background In the general population the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is 2–3%. There is growing awareness of how AIS affects the quality of life of patients. However, the extent of the societal burden AIS poses remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the societal burden of AIS. Methods A cross-sectional burden of disease study was conducted using a bottom-up, prevalence-based approach. Patients with AIS or guardians of a child diagnosed with AIS residing in the Netherlands were eligible for inclusion. The survey was distributed between June - December 2022 and was completed once by each participant. Costs were assessed using the institute for Medical Technology Assessment - Medical Consumption and Productivity Cost Questionnaires. The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using the EuroQol 5D-5L/EuroQol 5D Youth and the Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised questionnaires. Costs and HRQoL were identified, measured, and valued. Results Participants (n = 229) were predominantly female (92%), on average 35 years old, and were employed (65%). The societal cost for a patient with AIS in the Netherlands was €12,275 per year. The largest costs were estimated for the healthcare and productivity losses. The mean utility score for adults was 0.7 (SD 0.20). Severe pain was experienced by 10% of the adult participants and 44% reported to experience moderate pain/discomfort. Statistically significant differences between different age groups were present for the sector costs and HRQoL. Conclusions AIS negatively impacts societal costs and the HRQoL. Reducing the burden that is posed on the productivity sector by AIS and further improving the HRQoL for AIS patients is needed.

Abstract Aims The primary aim of this study was to characterize the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and identify the associated factors among children aged 2 to 18 in China diagnosed with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS). Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the HRQoL and caregiving burden of their caregivers and investigate the correlation between the HRQoL of the children and that of their caregivers. Methods This study recruited 181 children diagnosed with INS from Children’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China. The proxy-reported PedsQL Generic Core Module (PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM) was used to measure the HRQoL of children, and the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire, five-level version (EQ-5D-5L) was applied to measure caregivers’ HRQoL. Differences in scale scores and total scores of PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM were assessed using t-tests and one-way ANOVA. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with children’s HRQoL. Pearson correlation analysis evaluated the correlation between children’s HRQoL and caregiver’s HRQoL. Results HRQoL of Children with INS declines with increasing age, and children aged 5-18 had lower scores in physical functioning, emotional functioning, school functioning, psychosocial health summary score, and total PedsQL™ 4.0 GCM score compared to healthy children. Abstract Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a concerning public health issue, affecting people regardless of their sex, age, or socioeconomic status. We aimed to analyze the burden of female CKD in Mexico between 1990 and 2021, expressed in terms of years lived with disability (YLDs), mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Additionally, we evaluated the relationship between DALYs and the Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) and the Healthcare Access and Quality Index (HAQI). Methods Secondary data analysis from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021. We used mortality, years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs to analyze CKD in women between 1990 and 2021. We used a log-linear segmented regression model to analyze trends in female CKD DALY rates over time. The information was disaggregated by age groups and sub-causes nationally and across the 32 states. Age-standardized rates (ASR) were used. Results Between 1990 and 2021, the ASR mortality and ASR-DALYs due to CKD increased significantly at the national level. The DALYs are almost entirely explained by YLLs, indicating that a large proportion of women with CKD in Mexico die prematurely. Disparities in the burden of this disease were observed across different states and age groups within the country. In 2021, the highest ASR-DALY rate was recorded in Tabasco (1,972.0), while the lowest was in Sinaloa (865.1). The SDI and HAQI were associated with the CKD DALYs in most states. Conclusions Mexican women experience a significant burden due to CKD, reflected in premature deaths and years lived with disability, while disparities between states need to be addressed to reduce inequities. Over the past 32 years, improvements in socioeconomic indicators and the quality and access to healthcare have not contributed to reducing the DALYs rate due to CKD, indicating a need to redirect policies to impact women’s well-being and health positively.

Abstract Objective Uterine cancer (UC) is one of the prevalent malignancies in the female reproductive system. Estimating the burden trends of UC is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies at the national level. However, there has been no comprehensive analysis of the UC burden in China. We focused on the evaluation of the burden trends of UC in China over the past 32 years to provide a 15-year projection, comparing it with global levels. Methods Data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were extracted from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 to describe the burden of UC in China. Joinpoint regression analysis was employed to describe the temporal trends of UC in China and globally over the past 32 years. A Bayesian age-period-cohort model was utilized to predict the trends of UC in the next 15 years. Spearman correlation analysis was used to compare the relationship between ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, ASDR, and SDI in UC in China and globally. Changes in ASMR and ASDR in UC caused by high BMI in China and globally from 1990 to 2021 were explored. Results In 2021, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) of UC in China were 6.65, 46.52, 1.24, and 37.86 (per 100,000 population) respectively. Compared to 1990, the ASMR and ASDR decreased by 48.63% and 48.15% respectively, while the ASIR and ASPR increased by 17.79% and 37.67% respectively. Globally, the burden of UC followed a similar trend in China, with increasing ASIR and ASPR, and decreasing ASMR and ASDR, although the magnitude of increase and decrease was smaller than in China. Joinpoint regression analysis results showed an overall upward trend in ASIR and ASPR for both China and global UC, while an overall downward trend was observed in ASMR and ASDR. Age-specific analysis revealed that during the period from 1990 to 2021, the age groups with the highest incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs for UC in China generally occurred at earlier ages compared to the global pattern. Abstract Background The burden of disease (BOD) approach, originating with the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study in the 1990s, has become a cornerstone for population health monitoring. Despite the widespread use of the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) metric, variations in methodological approaches and reporting inconsistencies hinder comparability across studies. To tackle this issue, we set out to develop guidelines for reporting DALY calculation studies to improve the transparency and comparability of BOD estimates. Methods and Findings The development of the STROBOD statement began within the European Burden of Disease Network, evolving from initial concepts discussed in workshops and training sessions focused on critical analysis of BOD studies. In 2021, a working group was formed to refine the preliminary version into the final Standardised Reporting of Burden of Disease studies (STROBOD) statement, consisting of 28 items structured across six main sections. These sections cover the title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and open science, aiming to ensure transparency and standardization in reporting BOD studies. Notably, the methods section of the STROBOD checklist encompasses aspects such as study setting, data inputs and adjustments, DALY calculation methods, uncertainty analyses, and recommendations for reproducibility and transparency. A pilot phase was conducted to test the efficacy of the STROBOD statement, highlighting the importance of providing clear explanations and examples for each reporting item. Conclusions The inaugural STROBOD statement offers a crucial framework for standardizing reporting in BOD research, with plans for ongoing evaluation and potential revisions based on user feedback. While the current version focuses on general BOD methodology, future iterations may include specialized checklists for distinct applications such as injury or risk factor estimation, reflecting the dynamic nature of this field.

Abstract Background A large fraction of the disease burden in the Italian population is due to behavioral risk factors. The objective of this work is to provide a tool to estimate the impact of preventive interventions that reduce the exposure to smoking and sedentary lifestyle of the Italian population, with the goal of selecting optimal interventions. Methods We construct a Markovian model that simulates the state of each subject of the Italian population. The model predicts the distribution of subjects in each health status and risk factor status for every year of the simulation. Based on this distribution, the model provides a rich output summary, such as the number of incident and prevalent cases for each tracing disease and the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY), used to assess the impact of preventive interventions, and how this impact is shaped in time. Results This paper focuses on the methodological aspects of the model. The proposed model is flexible and can be applied to estimate the impact of complex interventions on the two risk factors and adapted to consider different cohorts. We validate the model by simulating the evolution of the Italian population from 2009 to 2017 and comparing the output with historical data. Furthermore, as a case-study, we simulate a counterfactual scenario where both tobacco and sedentary lifestyle are eradicated from the Italian population in 2019 and estimate the impact of such intervention over the following 20 years. Conclusions We propose a Markovian model to estimate how interventions on smoking and sedentary lifestyle can affect the reduction of the disease burden, and validate the model on historical data. The model is flexible and allows to extend the analysis to consider more risk factors in future research. However, we are aware that, given the ever-increasing availability of data, it is necessary in the future to increase the complexity of the model, to be closer to reality and to provide decision-making support to the policy-makers.

Abstract Background Lung cancer (LC) is among the most common neoplasms, mostly caused by smoking. This study, carried out within the ACAB project, aims to provide local, updated and systematic estimates of years lived with disability (YLD) from LC due to smoking in the Tuscany region, Italy. Methods We estimated YLD for the year 2022 for the whole region and at subregional level by local health unit (LHU) using data from the Tuscany Cancer Registry and local surveys. YLD were calculated by applying the severity-specific LC prevalence, estimated with an incidence-based disease model, to the corresponding disability weight. The burden from smoking was computed by: modelling the prevalence of smokers with a Bayesian Dirichlet-Multinomial regression model; estimating the distribution of smokers by pack-years simulating individual smoking histories; collecting relative risks from the literature. Results In 2022 in Tuscany, LC caused 7.79 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] = 2.26, 17.27) and 25.50 (95% UI = 7.30, 52.68) YLDs per 100,000 females and males, respectively, with slight variations by LHU, and 53% and 66% of the YLDs were caused by smoking. Conclusion The updated estimates of the burden of LC attributable to smoking for the Tuscany region as a whole and for each LHU provide indications to inform strategic prevention plans and set public health priorities. The impact of smoking on YLDs from LC is not negligible and heterogeneous by LHU, thus requiring local interventions.

Abstract Objective Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. This study aims is to investigate the burden of breast cancer in Iran and its relationship with the Human Development Index (HDI) during 2009 to 2019. Study design The present study is an observational study in Iran during the years 2009 to 2019. Data related to the incidence, mortality, Years of Life with Disability (YLD), Years of Life Lost (YLL) and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years (DALY) of breast cancer in Iran were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD-2019) website. Correlation tests are used to check the relationship between these indicators and the human development index. Results The highest incidence rate of breast cancer in 2019 is related to the provinces of Gilan (29 per 100,000) and Tehran (28.55 per 100,000) and the highest rate of death from breast cancer is related to the provinces of Gilan (10.71 per 100,000). and Semnan (9.97 in 100,000). Abstract Background Having previously shown headache disorders to be prevalent in Mongolia, here we elaborate on headache as a public-health concern in this country, reporting symptom burden and headache-attributed impaired participation at individual and societal levels, and conducting a health-care needs assessment. Methods The study followed the standardized methodology developed by the Global Campaign against Headache, generating a representative general-population sample through multi-level randomized cluster sampling. Participants aged 18–65 years were interviewed at unannounced household visits by interviewers administering the HARDSHIP questionnaire. Symptom burden was established through questions on frequency, duration and intensity of headache, with proportion of time in ictal state calculated from frequency and duration. Individual impaired participation was established through the HALT questionnaire, enquiring into lost time from paid and household work and from leisure activities. Symptom burden and impaired participation yesterday were also assessed in those reporting headache yesterday. Population-level estimates were derived by factoring in prevalence. Results The total sample included 2,043 participants. Those reporting any headache in the last year (n = 1,351) spent, on average, 9.7% of all their time with headache, losing 1.3 workdays and 2.4 household days/3 months. These losses were considerably higher among those with probable medication-overuse headache (37.5%, 3.5 workdays, 6.7 household days) or other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+) (21.9%, 2.4 workdays, 5.1 household days). At population-level (including those with and without headache), 6.2–7.4% of all time was spent with headache, 3.1% with H15+; 0.8 workdays and 1.4 household days/person/3 months were lost to headache, 0.3 workdays and 0.6 household days to migraine (the biggest contributor of all headache types). Our needs assessment estimated that one third (33.2%) of the adult population of Mongolia have headache (mostly migraine or H15+) likely to benefit from health care. Conclusion This first population-based study on headache burden in Mongolia shows high levels of individual and societal burden, with H15 + the cause of greater burden at population level than migraine and TTH combined. Migraine, however, has the biggest impact on the nation’s productivity. From a purely economic perspective, Mongolia, with limited health resources, would probably be best served by focusing on mitigating migraine-attributed burden.

Abstract Globally, cancer is the second leading cause of death, with a growing burden also observed in Kazakhstan. This study evaluates the burden of common cancers in Almaty, Kazakhstan's major city, from 2017 to 2021, utilizing data from the Information System of the Ministry of Health. In Kazakhstan, most common cancers among men include lung, stomach, and prostate cancer, while breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers are predominant among women. Employing measures like disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), we found that selected cancer types accounted for a total DALY burden of 25,016.60 in 2021, with mortality contributing more than disability (95.2% vs. 4.7%) with the ratio of non-fatal to fatal outcomes being 1.4 times higher in women than in men. The share of non-fatal burden (YLD) proportion within DALYs increased for almost all selected cancer types, except stomach and cervical cancer over the observed period in Almaty. Despite the overall increase in cancer burden observed during the time period, a downward trend in specific cancers suggests the efficacy of implemented cancer control strategies. Comparison with global trends highlights the significance of targeted interventions. This analysis underscores the need for continuous comprehensive cancer control strategies in Almaty and Kazakhstan, including vaccination against human papillomavirus, stomach cancer screening programs, and increased cancer awareness initiatives.

Abstract Introduction Liver cancer (LC) is frequently preceded by cirrhosis and poses a significant public health challenge in the United States (US). Recent decades have seen notable shifts in the epidemiological patterns of LC, yet national data guiding the optimal allocation of resources and preventive efforts remain limited. This study aims to investigate the current trends, risk factors, and outcomes of LC in the US. Methods This study utilized the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) dataset to collect data on the annual incident cases, deaths, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-standardized death rates, and age-standardized DALY rates of primary LC and its etiologies and risk factors, between 1990 and 2019. Percentage changes in incident cases, DALYs, and deaths and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in ASIR and deaths rates of LC were calculated to conduct temporal analysis. Linear regression was applied for the calculation of EAPCs. Correlations of EAPC with socio-demographic index (SDI) were separately evaluated by Pearson correlation analyses. Results We observed a marked increase in the ASIR of LC, increasing from 2.22 (95% CI: 2.15–2.27) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 5.23 (95% CI: 4.28–6.29) per 100,000 people in 2019, a percentage change of 135.4%. LC due to hepatitis C followed by alcohol use were the primary factors driving this increase. The ASIR and age-standardized death rates of LC showed a significant average annual increase of 3.0% (95% CI: 2.7–3.2) and 2.6% (95% CI: 2.5–2.8), respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between the SDI and the EAPC in ASIR (ρ = -0.40, p = 0.004) and age-standardized death rates (ρ = -0.46, p

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in China is on the rise. It is estimated that there are 330 million people with CVD, including 13 million cases of stroke, 11.39 million cases of coronary heart disease (CHD), 8.9 million cases of heart failure (HF), 5 million cases of pulmonary heart disease, 4.87 million atrial fibrillation, 2.5 million cases of rheumatic heart disease, 2 million cases of congenital heart disease, 45.3 million cases of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and 245 million cases of hypertension. In 2021, the total number of discharges of patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China was 27 649 800, accounting for 15.36% of the total number of discharges (including all inpatient diseases) in the same period, including 14 872 300 CVDs, accounting for 8.26%, and 12 777 500 cerebrovascular diseases, accounting for 7.10%. The economic burden of CVD on residents and society still increases, and the inflection point of CVD prevention and treatment has not yet arrived.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events or situations that individuals may experience during their childhood. Children living with prolonged and persistent adverse experiences may have lifelong effects on their physical and mental health. Most studies in Europe and the United States confirm that ACEs increase the risk of hypertension in adulthood. However, the association between different types of ACEs and hypertension in adulthood remains controversial. This study provides a comprehensive review of studies on the association between different types of ACEs and hypertension, which explores the effects of ACEs on hypertension in adulthood and potential mechanisms. This study also summarizes the current status of studies on ACEs and hypertension. It presents a prospective view of providing a basis for improving the early childhood developmental environment and preventing hypertension in adulthood.

Purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI), currently a major global public health problem, imposes a significant economic burden on society and families. We aimed to quantify and predict the incidence and severity of TBI by analyzing its incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs). The epidemiological changes in TBI from 1990 to 2019 were described and updated to provide a reference for developing prevention, treatment, and incidence-reducing measures for TBI. Methods: A secondary analysis was performed on the incidence, prevalence, and YLDs of TBI by sex, age group, and region (n = 21,204 countries and territories) between 1990 and 2019 using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. Proportions in the age-standardized incidence rate due to underlying causes of TBI and proportions of minor and moderate or severe TBI were also reported. Results: In 2019, there were 27.16 million (95% uncertainty intervals (UI): 23.36 − 31.42) new cases of TBI worldwide, with age-standardized incidence and prevalence rates of 346 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 298 – 401) and 599 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 573 – 627), respectively. From 1990 to 2019, there were no significant trends in global age-standardized incidence (estimated annual percentage changes: -0.11%, 95% UI: -0.18% − -0.04%) or prevalence (estimated annual percentage changes: 0.01%, 95% UI: -0.04% − 0.06%). TBI caused 7.08 million (95% UI: 5.00 − 9.59) YLDs in 2019, with age-standardized rates of 86.5 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 61.1 − 117.2). In 2019, the countries with higher incidence rates were mainly distributed in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Australia. The 2019 global age-standardized incidence rate was higher in males than in females. The 2019 global incidence of moderate and severe TBI was 182.7 per 100,000 population, accounting for 52.8% of all TBI, with falls and road traffic injuries being the main causes in most regions. Conclusions: The incidence of moderate and severe TBI was slightly higher in 2019, and TBI still accounts for a significant portion of the global injury burden. The likelihood of moderate to severe TBI and the trend of major injury under each injury cause from 1990 to 2019 and the characteristics of injury mechanisms in each age group are presented, providing a basis for further research on injury causes in each age group and the future establishment of corresponding policies and protective measures.

This paper underscores the imperative for enhanced data disaggregation within the Australian Burden of Disease Studies (ABDS). While the ABDS offers a detailed assessment of disease burden, it falls short in providing systematic, disaggregated data – key to equitable healthcare and informed policymaking. Given Australia’s rich linguistic, ethnic, and cultural tapestry, aggregated health data often obscures the true extent of health disparities among diverse groups. The absence of detailed health data can precipitate unforeseen inequities with profound societal repercussions, including social unrest, diminished trust in healthcare and governance, economic downturns, educational gaps, mental health crises, political challenges, and stigmatisation. Such disparities undermine confidence in health systems and advisories, potentially fostering scepticism towards official health communications. Health disparities can lead to economic inadequacies, inflated healthcare expenditures, and stunted economic growth. Communities suffering from poor health are economically disadvantaged, and unexpected health inequities can derail educational achievements, particularly for students from underprivileged backgrounds who may face additional obstacles due to health-related absences or resource scarcity. The mental health burden from health disparities can escalate community-wide psychological distress, manifesting in heightened depression, anxiety, and trauma rates. The stigmatisation of certain groups exacerbates societal divisions and impedes unity. Politically, health inequities demand attention, with leaders facing scrutiny over their handling of these issues. Nevertheless, such challenges can catalyse community solidarity and advocacy for systemic change, fostering resilience. Addressing these disparities necessitates a comprehensive strategy encompassing disaggregated data access, equitable healthcare provision, policy reform, and community involvement. The ABDS 2023 report that Australians lost 5.6 million years of potential healthy life, with chronic disease imposing a more significant toll than premature mortality. The primary contributors to this burden were cancers, mental health conditions, and substance abuse disorders. However, this collective data fails to illuminate the disparate disease impacts on culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse populations. The ABD Study highlighted that in 2018, Indigenous Australians lost nearly 240,000 years of healthy life due to illness and early death, equating to 289 years per 1,000 individuals. Conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, renal disorders, strokes, and respiratory issues were more prevalent among individuals with limited English proficiency compared to fluent speakers. Gestational diabetes rates were notably higher in South Asian, Vietnamese, and African migrants compared to the native-born populace. The article emphasises the critical role of disaggregated health data in shaping effective health policies, optimising resource allocation, and promoting equitable health outcomes aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. It advocates for integrating such data in public health practices to mitigate health disparities and enhance the welfare of all Australians. Ensuring the widespread availability of legally mandated disaggregated health data is vital for identifying, monitoring, and addressing health disparities within Australia’s multicultural society.

To estimate the economic burden of varicella among children in France from family and societal perspectives. We conducted an online cross-sectional survey of caregivers of 185 French children (≤ 17 years) diagnosed with varicella in the previous six weeks. Data collected included varicella-related healthcare resource use, out-of-pocket costs, missed school days, and workdays missed by either parents or other caregivers. Mean and median direct and indirect costs (2022 Euros) were calculated using survey data and published literature. The annual societal burden of pediatric varicella in France was estimated. Of the 185 children, 95.1% had ≥ 1 outpatient visit, 10.3% had ≥ 1 emergency room visit, and 2.2% were hospitalized. The median [interquartile range, IQR] number of outpatient visits/child was 1.0 [1.0 – 2.0]. The median length of hospital stay among those hospitalized (n = 4) was 5.0 [3.5 – 6.5] days. Caregivers of 185 children missed a median of 2.0 [0 – 5.0] workdays; 113 families (61.1%) had ≥ 1 parent miss work. A median of 5.0 [3.0 – 7.0] school days were missed by 170 children who attended preschool or school. The median direct out-of-pocket cost to the family was €30.0 [€17.0 – €60.0]. The median [IQR] societal costs per varicella case were €455.2 [€70.5 – €1013.5]; the median [IQR] direct and indirect costs per child were €60.8 [€39.0 – €102.7] and €364.7 [€0.0 – €911.7] respectively. The annual societal burden of varicella among children in France was estimated to be €450,427,578 (95% CI: €357,144,618 – €543,710,538), with indirect costs accounting for 85%. Conclusions: A substantial economic burden is associated with pediatric varicella in France, primarily due to the productivity loss among caregivers. What is Known: • Although varicella is considered a mild disease, it poses a significant burden on caregivers and society. Our study aimed to estimate the economic burden of varicella among children in France from family and societal perspectives to support policymakers in understanding the value of UVV in France. What is New: • We conducted an online survey of caregivers of 185 French children (≤17 years) diagnosed with varicella and collected data on varicella-related healthcare resource use, missed school days and workdays. Our study estimated annual societal burden of pediatric varicella in France. Out of 185 children with varicella, most (95.1%) had at least one outpatient visit, 10.3% had at least one emergency room visit, and 2.2% were hospitalized. 61.1% of parents with sick child, missed work and median productivity loss was 2.0 workdays. Additionally, 170 children who attended school or preschool missed a median of 5.0 school days. • The societal burden of pediatric varicella in France was estimated to be €450,427,578 (95% CI, €357,144,618 - €543,710,538), with indirect costs accounting for 85%. BACKGROUND: A population-based method for estimating disease burden is commonly used. Nevertheless, these measurements do not entirely capture the comprehensive burden of illness on an individual patient. To address the problem, the Individual Burden of Illness Index (IBI index) Index was created and validated, specifically for major depressive disorder. The IBI represents the overall influence of the condition, encompassing distress from symptom intensity, functional impairment, and the patient’s quality of life. AIM: The aim of the study was to approve and validate the IBI index for the integral assessment of disease burden in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) in remission. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted in the outpatient psychiatric services in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from April through October 2020. Eighty-five patients aged 18 to 45 (mean age 36.6±5.7 years) with BD (type I — 75%, n=64; type II — 25%, n=21) in remission were examined. The study procedure included a structured clinical interview and the use of clinical scales: the World Health Organization’s Quality of Life Questionnaire, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HDRS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and Personal and the Social Performance Scale. RESULTS: The principal component analysis in accordance with the adjusted one showed that the burden of illness in patients with BD in remission is directly related to the severity of residual depressive symptoms, reflected in the HDRS score: as the HDRS score increases (0.27, p 0.001), residual mania (-0.14, p 0.001), social functioning (-0.06, p 0.001), and quality of life (-0.04, p 0.001) decrease. In contrast, when there are remaining residual mania symptoms, as indicated by the YMRS score, the result tends to be a lower burden, better social functioning, and enhanced quality of life. CONCLUSION: The study has demonstrated through statistical means a successful adaptation and validation of the previously calculated IBI index for patients with BD in remission. Residual affective symptoms were shown to have different impacts on the social functioning of patients with BD in remission, indicating the need for a timely assessment and targeted therapy of these symptoms in such patients.

Objective: This research aims to update knowledge on the regional and national sickness burden attributable to cystic echinococcosis (CE) from 1990 to 2019, as well as epidemiology and disease control, with a particular emphasis on the People’s Central Asian Regions. Methods: We calculated the morbidity, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years at the global, regional, and national levels for CE in all central Asian countries from 1990 to 2019, and we analyzed the association between GDP per capita and the disease burden of CE. Results: In 2019, the three greatest numbers of CE cases were recorded in Kazakhstan [23986; 95% uncertainty interval (UI); 19796; 28908]; Uzbekistan (41079; 18351; 76048); and Tajikistan (10887; 4891; 20170) among all 9 countries. The three countries with the greatest ASIR of CE were estimated to be Kazakhstan (127.56; 95% UI: 105.34-153.8), Uzbekistan (123.53; 95% UI: 58.65-219.16), and Tajikistan (121.88; 58.57-213.93). Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan had the biggest increases (125%, 97%, and 83%, respectively) in the number of incident cases of CE, whereas Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Armenia saw the largest decreases (45%, 8%, and 3%, respectively). Conclusion: To reduce the illness burden caused by CE, our findings may help public health professionals and policymakers design cost-benefit initiatives. To lessen the impact of CE on society, it is suggested that more money be given to the region’s most endemic nations. Abstract Introduction In Germany, the estimation of the disease burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in older adults is limited. This makes it challenging for public health decision-makers to develop evidence-based recommendations for newly available vaccines against RSV for individuals aged 60 years and older (60+). This study investigates publicly available data sources in Germany to address the current gaps in evidence regarding the burden of RSV. Methods Hospitalisation databases from the German Federal Statistical Office and national mortality statistic between 2000 and 2023, as well as regular surveillance reports from the national public health institute since 2014, were utilised to extract, combine and analyse data on RSV-related morbidity and mortality. These data were used to triangulate the age-specific burden of RSV. Results The data indicate that the number of RSV-related outpatient consultations ranges between 1,313,100 and 3,911,800 cases per season from 2014/2015 to 2022/2023 for all age groups, with approximately 13.0% of outpatient consultations occurring in adults 60+. The significant increase in hospitalisations over time suggests that heightened testing due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed the underdetection of inpatient RSV cases in pre-pandemic seasons. In the most recent season recorded, 2022/2023, the data show 12,800 RSV-related hospitalisations in adults 60+ (24% of all RSV-related hospitalisations) and 1340 in-hospital deaths in adults 60+ (93% of all RSV-related deaths). Conclusion The comparison of pre- to post-pandemic seasons strongly suggest up to a sevenfold underdetection of RSV in individuals 60+, and the analysis of in-hospital mortality reveals higher mortality rates compared with the general German mortality statistics. These findings highlight the urgent need to improve surveillance and implement targeted prevention strategies to mitigate the impact of RSV in older adults.

Introduction Tobacco-related diseases have a substantial economic impact in terms of medical expenses, loss of productivity, and premature death. Tobacco use is estimated to be responsible for more than 90000 deaths each year in Italy. We aimed to evaluate the annual direct economic impact on the National Health System of hospitalizations attributable to tobacco smoking in Italy. Methods We analyzed data from all the hospitalizations of patients aged ≥30 years that occurred in Italy for 12 selected tobacco-related diseases, during 2018. These diseases included oropharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, laryngeal cancer, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diseases of arteries, arterioles, and capillaries, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We obtained information on 984322 hospital discharge records, including each hospitalization's direct costs. Using relative risk estimates from the scientific literature, we computed the population attributable fraction for various tobacco-related diseases to estimate the economic impact attributable to tobacco smoking. Results One-third of all hospitalizations occurred in 2018 in Italy among people aged ≥30 years for 12 tobacco-related diseases were found to be attributable to smoking, accounting for a total cost of €1.64 billion. Among the diseases considered, those with the highest expenditures attributable to tobacco smoking were ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and lung cancer, accounting for €556 million, €290 million, and €229 million, respectively. Conclusions Tobacco has a substantial economic impact in Italy, accounting for around 6% of the total cost of hospitalizations in 2018. This figure is expected to be largely underestimated due to several conservative assumptions adopted in the statistical analyses. It is imperative to prioritize comprehensive tobacco control measures to counteract the huge healthcare costs due to tobacco smoking.
