Abstract Hydrophobic nanoporous materials can only be intruded by water forcibly, typically increasing pressure. For some materials, water extrudes when the pressure is lowered again. Controlling intrusion/extrusion hysteresis is central in technological applications, including energy materials, high performance liquid chromatography, and liquid porosimetry, but its molecular determinants are still elusive. Here, we consider water intrusion/extrusion in mesoporous materials grafted with hydrophobic chains, showing that intrusion/extrusion is ruled by microscopic heterogeneities in the grafting. For example, intrusion/extrusion pressures can vary more than 60 MPa depending on the chain length and grafting density. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations reveal that local changes in radius and contact angle produced by grafting heterogeneities can pin the water interface during intrusion or facilitate vapor bubble nucleation in extrusion. These microscopic insights can directly impact the design of energy materials and chromatography columns, as well as the interpretation of porosimetry results.

Modern ICT infrastructures, i.e., cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures relying on interconnected IT (Information Technology)- and OT (Operational Technology)-based components and (sub-)systems, raise complex challenges in tackling security and safety issues. Nowadays, many security controls and mechanisms have been made available and exploitable to solve specific security needs, but, when dealing with very complex and multifaceted heterogeneous systems, a methodology is needed on top of the selection of each security control that will allow the designer/maintainer to drive her/his choices to build and keep the system secure as a whole, leaving the choice of the security controls to the last step of the system design/development. This paper aims at providing a comprehensive methodological approach to design and preliminarily implement an Open Platform Architecture (OPA) to secure the cyber-physical systems of critical infrastructures. Here, the Open Platform Architecture (OPA) depicts how an already existing or under-design target system (TS) can be equipped with technologies that are modern or currently under development, to monitor and timely detect possibly dangerous situations and to react in an automatic way by putting in place suitable countermeasures. A multifaceted use case (UC) that is able to show the OPA, starting from the security and safety requirements to the fully designed system, will be developed step by step to show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Acute scrotum is a set of signs and symptoms that should lead the patient to go to a first aid center. There are different causes of these signs and symptoms, but testicular torsion is identified as the main ones and can be suspected thanks to a careful history, physical examination and testicular ultrasound. It is important to quickly differentiate the various conditions associated with acute scrotum in order to optimize surgery times and preserve testicular vitality. Often the radiological study is essential to identify the causes of acute scrotum, in particular the testicular Doppler ultrasound is sensitive and specific for testicular torsion, infact it is considered the gold standard for diagnosis. However, the radiological study can delay surgical treatment and reduce testicular vitality. So TWIST score was proposed. It is based on the identification of signs and symptoms that can lead at clinical diagnosis of testicular torsion. Our narrative of literature review analyzes TWIST score validity and shows the utility of an adequate clinical examination obtaining a diagnosis of torsion cord, reducing the costs and the time of surgical treatment resulting in a higher likelihood of preserving testicular vitality

DockerChannel is a software suite for investigating possible information leakages of Docker containers. Its main scope is to support developers to fully assess the impact of the “loose” isolation of statistics provided by the container engine. It can also help researchers to investigate new attacks leveraging the orchestration of malicious containers. DockerChannel is built around an extensible Python class abstracting the creation of the covert communication mechanism and it can be used both in a general-purpose manner or “bundled” within pre-existing containers, e.g., to check leakages in real cloud-native deployments.

The interest in gluteal augmentation using minimally invasive techniques has been increasing rapidly. Despite the fact that Aquafilling filler was described as biocompatible with human tissues, the number of associated complications has been rising. We present an exceptional case of a 35-year-old female patient, who suffered major long-term complications in association with Aquafilling filler injections in the gluteal region. The patient was referred to our center with signs of recurrent inflammation and severe pain focusing on the left lower extremity. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple, communicating abscess formations all the way from the gluteal region to the lower leg. Therefore, an operative debridement was accomplished in the operating theater. Finally, this report emphasizes the severity of possible long-term complications when using Aquafilling filler especially in larger areas. Furthermore, the oncogenicity as well as toxicity of polyacrylamide, the core material of Aquafilling filler, remains uncertain, which is why further research is urgently required.

Abstract In the present work, we consider a hybrid plexciton composed of a semiconductor quantum dot interacting with a topological insulator nanoparticle subject to an external magnetic field. Due to the topological magnetoelectricity of the nanoparticle, long-living plasmonic surface modes are induced, which are quantized and coupled with the quantum dot through its polarization operator. We consider the hybrid as an open quantum system, such that environment effects are accounted by the master equation in the Born–Markov approximation. Then, we apply the Peres’ positive partial transpose criterion to quantify the entanglement of the hybrid. We show that this entanglement is a direct signature of the $$\mathbb {Z}_2$$ Z 2 invariant of topological insulators.

In the era of Industry 4.0, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widespread in occupational settings. Since dealing with human safety, explainability and trustworthiness of AI are even more important than achieving high accuracy. eXplainable AI (XAI) is investigated in this paper to detect physical fatigue during manual material handling task simulation. Besides comparing global rule-based XAI models (LLM and DT) to black-box models (NN, SVM, XGBoost) in terms of performance, we also compare global models with local ones (LIME over XGBoost). Surprisingly, global and local approaches achieve similar conclusions, in terms of feature importance. Moreover, an expansion from local rules to global rules is designed for Anchors, by posing an appropriate optimization method (Anchors coverage is enlarged from an original low value, 11%, up to 43%). As far as trustworthiness is concerned, rule sensitivity analysis drives the identification of optimized regions in the feature space, where physical fatigue is predicted with zero statistical error. The discovery of such “non-fatigue regions” helps certifying the organizational and clinical decision making.

Machine learning (ML) algorithms are nowadays widely adopted in different contexts to perform autonomous decisions and predictions. Due to the high volume of data shared in the recent years, ML algorithms are more accurate and reliable since training and testing phases are more precise. An important concept to analyze when defining ML algorithms concerns adversarial machine learning attacks. These attacks aim to create manipulated datasets to mislead ML algorithm decisions. In this work, we propose new approaches able to detect and mitigate malicious adversarial machine learning attacks against a ML system. In particular, we investigate the Carlini-Wagner (CW), the fast gradient sign method (FGSM) and the Jacobian based saliency map (JSMA) attacks. The aim of this work is to exploit detection algorithms as countermeasures to these attacks. Initially, we performed some tests by using canonical ML algorithms with a hyperparameters optimization to improve metrics. Then, we adopt original reliable AI algorithms, either based on eXplainable AI (Logic Learning Machine) or Support Vector Data Description (SVDD). The obtained results show how the classical algorithms may fail to identify an adversarial attack, while the reliable AI methodologies are more prone to correctly detect a possible adversarial machine learning attack. The evaluation of the proposed methodology was carried out in terms of good balance between FPR and FNR on real world application datasets: Domain Name System (DNS) tunneling, Vehicle Platooning and Remaining Useful Life (RUL). In addition, a statistical analysis was performed to improve the robustness of the trained models, including evaluating their performance in terms of runtime and memory consumption.

The elucidation of the ripening pathways of climacteric fruits helps to reduce postharvest losses and improve fruit quality. Here, we report an integrative study on tomato ripening for two near-isogenic lines (NIL115 and NIL080) with Solanum pimpinellifolium LA0722 introgressions. A comprehensive analysis using phenotyping, molecular, transcript, and protein data were performed. Both NILs show improved fruit firmness and NIL115 also has longer shelf life compared to the cultivated parent. NIL115 differentially expressed a transcript from the APETALA2 ethylene response transcription factor family (AP2/ERF) with a potential role in fruit ripening. E4, another ERF, showed an upregulated expression in NIL115 as well as in the wild parent, and it was located physically close to a wild introgression. Other proteins whose expression levels changed significantly during ripening were identified, including an ethylene biosynthetic enzyme (ACO3) and a pectate lyase (PL) in NIL115, and an alpha-1,4 glucan phosphorylase (Pho1a) in NIL080. In this study, we provide insights into the effects of several genes underlying tomato ripening with potential impact on fruit shelf life. Data integration contributed to unraveling ripening-related genes, providing opportunities for assisted breeding.

Primary buried (BP) penis is describes as a small penis caused by a penile ligaments anomaly; it is unclear if a primary BP could reach a normal length. We selected 49 patients treated at our institution between 2015 and 2020 in order to post-operatively evaluate the SPL after one year. SPL was evaluated according to the PH Tanner staging system for pre-pubertal patients according to age-normalized values. A micropenis was detected if the SPL was below 2.5 SD. A normal SPL was found in thirty-two patients, eighteen were in PH Stage 1, four were in PH Stage 2, six were in PH Stage 3, and four were in PH Stage 5. Seventeen patients showed a reduced SPL; in seven of these (four in PH Stage 4 and three in PH Stage 5), their SPL was p = 0.038). A primary BP grows normally during the pre-pubertal period, where patients frequently showed a normal SPL, but it seems to be unable to reach a normal length in the higher PH stages, where the SPL is used to detect a micropenis. We suggest that a primary BP should be considered not as a simple defect of the penile ligaments and surrounding tissues, but as an incomplete manifestation of a micropenis due to a growth slowdown of the organ in late puberty.

Abstract Introduction Idiopatic trigeminal neuralgia purely paroxysmal (ITNp) distributed in the supraorbital and suprathrochlear dermatomes (SSd), refractory to conventional treatments have been linked to the hyperactivity of the corrugator supercilii muscle (CSM). In these patients, the inactivation of the CSM via botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injections has been proven to be safe and effective in reducing migraine burden. The main limitation of BTA is the need of repetitive injections and relative high costs. Based on the study of the motor innervation of the CSM, we describe here an alternative approach to improve these type of migraines, based on a minimally invasive denervation of the CSM. Materials and methods Motor innervation and feasibility of selective CSM denervation was first studied on fresh frozen cadavers. Once the technique was safely established, 15 patients were enrolled. To be considered eligible, patients had to meet the following criteria: positive response to BTA treatment, migraine disability assessment score > 24, > 15 migraine days/month, no occipital/temporal trigger points and plausible reasons to discontinue BTA treatment. Pre- and post- operative migraine headache index (MHI) were compared, and complications were classified following the Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC). Internet of Things is a widely adopted and pervasive technology, but also one of the most relevant in cyber-security, given the volume and sensitivity of shared data and the availability of affordable but insecure products. In this paper, we propose a novel cyber-threat exploiting the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol to implement a tunneling attack. In IoT networks, sensitive and critical information are exchanged between devices or external systems to perform data analysis. For this reason, a tunneling threat could be adopted by a malicious user to steal information. In this context, a tunneling system based on MQTT can be considered since this communication protocol could be allowed to pass through enterprise firewalls because it is widely adopted in this IoT world. An attacker can exploit the MQTT protocol for various purposes such as steal information or access to not-allowed websites/servers. In particular in this work, we contribute in two main points: initially we demonstrate how the proposed threat is able to encapsulate messages through the MQTT protocol, by also comparing it with other tunneling systems exploiting different communication protocols. Obtained results show that exploiting MQTT for tunneling purposes is a good choice, compared to other communication protocols, especially for payloads up to 3000 bytes. Then, we propose and validate an initial machine learning based approach able to detect the proposed MQTT tunnel, by comparing different detection algorithms tested with and without a hyperparameter optimization, in terms of accuracy, F1 score and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. In this case, obtained results show that some algorithms are able to identify the attack, with an accuracy exceeding 95%, while others lack of such capability.

Background:. Prominent ears are a common congenital deformity of the head and neck. Correcting concha hypertrophy is an important step in otoplasty. Despite the risk of postoperative deformity due to the sharp edges created by excision, removing a section of cartilage is sometimes the only method to obtain a satisfying and long-lasting result. Multiple conchal excision techniques have been reported in the literature, with significant differences in approach, outcome evaluation, and complication classification. The objective was to review cartilage excision-based otoplasty procedures to offer plastic surgeons’ insights into current data on outcomes and complications of conchal excision techniques. Methods:. We conducted a literature search through the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. Prospective and retrospective studies on otoplasty, including revision surgeries and conchal excision techniques involving concha cartilage resection, were included. Articles with no outcomes data, review articles, case reports, expert opinion or comment, and nonclinical studies were excluded. Results:. There were a total of four manuscripts that fulfilled our criteria. Three out of four authors preferred posterior access that separates the skin excision from the cartilage excision. Following resection, cartilage edges can be approximated by placing cartilage sutures, or they can be allowed to collapse spontaneously. Although only two authors employed a systematic classification for complications, all the articles reviewed indicated a low complication rate and excellent postoperative cosmetic outcomes. Conclusion:. Although the techniques and principles stated in the literature varied to some extent, the outcomes of all studies reviewed were comparable.

Summary:. Morton’s neuroma (MN) is a painful, proliferative fibrosis of perineural tissue caused by pressure or recurrent irritation that was previously thought to affect only the common interdigital nerve of the foot. We present a case of a bilateral MN of both the ulnar and radial proper digital nerves of the fifth finger in a 30-year-old patient, following multiple surgeries on the aforementioned finger. The patient was referred to our center by a peripheral hospital after traumatic fingertip amputation distal the DIP joint, where the fingertip was initially simply sutured. Because of progressive neuropathic pain, he underwent two revision surgeries, in which the distal phalanx was removed, two neuromas were excised, and the nerve stumps were shortened, but both were unsuccessful. A final, more extensive revision surgery was then carried out, in which two club-like enlargements were excised and the nerve stumps coadapted to form a loop. Histopathological examination of the excised specimen revealed perineural fibrosis in the context of a Morton’s neuroma. This is, to our knowledge, the first documented case of a bilateral MN of the hand, which may have resulted from an inadequate primary finger and nerve shortening, resulting in high pressure from the surrounding soft tissue. Finally, this report emphasizes the significance of optimal treatment for finger amputation injuries, as well as the fact that for neuromas, simple nerve resection should be avoided whenever possible, because of the high recurrence rates.

Actualmente nos encontramos inmersos en un acelerado progreso tecnológico, el cual trae consigo ventajas para el mundo de las comunicaciones, pero retos para los derechos fundamentales. Estos desafíos se evidencian en el ejemplo de las comunicaciones dentro del contexto laboral. Es tal el fenómeno que tanto la Corte Suprema como el Tribunal Constitucional peruano han puesto de manifiesto la protección del trabajador ante una eventual inspección por parte del empleador del contenido de su correo electrónico institucional, salvo que exista una investigación de carácter judicial previa. El presente artículo analiza el derecho al secreto e inviolabilidad de las comunicaciones en las relaciones laborales desde una perspectiva actual. El eje de la investigación versa sobre el tratamiento del soporte tecnológico brindado por los empleadores, en especial la regulación sobre los correos electrónicos institucionales. Para ello, el autor realiza un análisis comparado de la jurisprudencia peruana, española y del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos, y concluye explorando la problemática del control de las conversaciones en las redes sociales del trabajador realizadas mediante un soporte electrónico brindado por el empleador.

Introducción: El Bisfenol A (BPA) es un disruptor endócrino (DE) posiblemente vinculado a eventos adversos reproductivos y del desarrollo neurológico que se utiliza como aditivo en envases plásticos de alimentos y bebidas. En la población argentina no existen datos sobre niveles de BPA en orina. El objetivo del estudio fue medir la presencia de BPA en orina de embarazadas.Métodos: Estudio transversal. Detección de BPA en orina de embarazadas atendidas en el Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires en el año 2013. La técnica utilizada fue cromatografía gaseosa asociada a espectrometría de masa con un límite de cuantificación de 2 ng/ml y de detección de 0,8 ng/ml. Se describe la proporción de mujeres con exposición al BPA con su intervalo de confianza del 95% (IC95%).Resultados: se analizaron 149 muestras de orina de embarazadas de edad promedio 32 años (Desvío Standard 5,3), el 81% (IC95% 73,9-86,9) trabaja y el 83,7% (IC95% 76,7-89,1) posee nivel universitario y/o posgrado.El 66,4% (IC95% 58,2-74,0) de las muestras urinarias presentaron BPA cuantificable, siendo la mediana de BPA de 4,3 ng / mg creatinina (Rango Intercuartilo 3,2-6,7).Conclusiones: Este estudio muestra que la exposición a BPA durante el proceso de formación embrionaria en un sector de la población de Argentina, es generalizada. En Argentina solo está regulado el uso de este DE en mamaderas.

The advancement in the domain of IoT accelerated the development of new communication technologies such as the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. Although MQTT servers/brokers are considered the main component of all MQTT-based IoT applications, their openness makes them vulnerable to potential cyber-attacks such as DoS, DDoS, or buffer overflow. As a result of this, an efficient intrusion detection system for MQTT-based applications is still a missing piece of the IoT security context. Unfortunately, existing IDSs do not provide IoT communication protocol support such as MQTT or CoAP to validate crafted or malformed packets for protecting the protocol implementation vulnerabilities of IoT devices. In this paper, we have designed and developed an MQTT parsing engine that can be integrated with network-based IDS as an initial layer for extensive checking against IoT protocol vulnerabilities and improper usage through a rigorous validation of packet fields during the packet-parsing stage. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the proposed solution across different reported vulnerabilities. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution for detecting and preventing the exploitation of vulnerabilities on IoT protocols.

The growing need for interoperability among the different oceanic monitoring systems to deliver services able to answer the requirements of stakeholders and end-users led to the development of a low-cost machine-to-machine communication system able to guarantee data reliability over marine paths. In this framework, an experimental evaluation of the performance of long-range (LoRa) technology in a fully operational marine scenario has been proposed. In-situ tests were carried out exploiting the availability of (i) a passenger vessel and (ii) a research vessel operating in the Ligurian basin (North-Western Mediterranean Sea) both hosting end-nodes, and (iii) gateways positioned on mountains and hills in the inland areas. Packet loss ratio, packet reception rate, received signal strength indicator, signal to noise, and expected signal power ratio were chosen as metrics in line of sight and not the line of sight conditions. The reliability of Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) transmission over the sea has been demonstrated up to more than 110 km in a free space scenario and for more than 20 km in a coastal urban environment.

Internet of things (IoT) is a technology that enables our daily life objects to connect on the Internet and to send and receive data for a meaningful purpose. In recent years, IoT has led to many revolutions in almost every sector of our society. Nevertheless, security threats to IoT devices and networks are relentlessly disruptive, because of the proliferation of Internet technologies. Phishing is one of the most prevalent threats to all Internet users, in which attackers aim to fraudulently extract sensitive information of a user or system, using fictitious emails, websites, etc. With the rapid increase in IoT devices, attackers are targeting IoT devices such as security cameras, smart cars, etc., and perpetrating phishing attacks to gain control over such vulnerable devices for malicious purposes. In recent decades, such scams have been spreading, and they have become increasingly advanced over time. By following this trend, in this paper, we propose a threat modelling approach to identify and mitigate the cyber-threats that can cause phishing attacks. We considered two significant IoT use cases, i.e., smart autonomous vehicular system and smart home. The proposed work is carried out by applying the STRIDE threat modelling approach to both use cases, to disclose all the potential threats that may cause a phishing attack. The proposed threat modelling approach can support the IoT researchers, engineers, and IoT cyber-security policymakers in securing and protecting the potential threats in IoT devices and systems in the early design stages, to ensure the secure deployment of IoT devices in critical infrastructures.

Abstract Background Burn patients are prone to infections which often necessitate broad antibiotic coverage. Vancomycin is a common antibiotic after burn injury and is administered alone (V), or in combination with imipenem-cilastin (V/IC) or piperacillin-tazobactam (V/PT). Sparse reports indicate that the combination V/PT is associated with increased renal dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term impact of the three antibiotic administration types on renal dysfunction. Methods All pediatric and adult patients admitted to our centers between 2004 and 2016 with a burn injury were included in this retrospective review if they met the criteria of exposition to either V, V/IC, or V/PT for at least 48 h, had normal baseline creatinine, and no pre-existing renal dysfunction. Creatinine was monitored for 7 days after initial exposure; the absolute and relative increase was calculated, and patient renal outcomes were classified according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria depending on creatinine increases and estimated creatinine clearance. Secondary endpoints (demographic and clinical data, incidences of septicemia, and renal replacement therapy) were analyzed. Antibiotic doses were modeled in logistic and linear multivariable regression models to predict categorical KDIGO events and relative creatinine increase. Results Out of 1449 patients who were screened, 718 met the inclusion criteria, 246 were adults, and 472 were children. Between the study cohorts V, V/IC, and V/PT, patient characteristics at admission were comparable. V/PT administration was associated with a statistically higher serum creatinine, and lower creatinine clearance compared to patients receiving V alone or V/IC in adults and children after burn injury. The incidence of KDIGO stages 1, 2, and 3 was higher after V/PT treatment. In children, the incidence of KDIGO stage 3 following administration of V/PT was greater than after V/IC. In adults, the incidence of renal replacement therapy was higher after V/PT compared with V or V/IC. Multivariate modeling demonstrated that V/PT is an independent predictor of renal dysfunction. Conclusion Co-administration of vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam is associated with increased renal dysfunction in pediatric and adult burn patients when compared to vancomycin alone or vancomycin plus imipenem-cilastin. The mechanism of this increased nephrotoxicity remains elusive and warrants further scientific evaluation.

Infections top the list of the most common complication after burns, and sepsis is the leading cause of death in both adult and pediatric burn patients. The diagnosis and management of sepsis in burns is complex as a tremendous hypermetabolic response secondary to burn injury can be superimposed on systemic infection, leading to organ dysfunction. The management of a septic burn patient represents a challenging scenario that is commonly encountered by providers caring for burn patients despite preventive efforts. Here, we discuss the current perspectives in the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis and septic shock in burn patients. Isolated and spontaneous superior mesenteric artery dissection is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. Whereas there is widespread consensus on conservative treatment of asymptomatic forms, revascularization would seem indicated in symptomatic complicated cases. A 73-year-old man presented with worsening epigastric pain. A computed tomography scan revealed an isolated and spontaneous superior mesenteric artery dissection with aneurysmal evolution of the false lumen, involving multiple side branches. The postdissection aneurysm was treated by endovascular exclusion with flow-diverting stents. The abdominal pain was completely relieved, and the patient remained asymptomatic at follow-up.

The application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques in the medical world is growing, with a range of purposes: from the identification and prediction of possible diseases to patient monitoring and clinical decision support systems. Furthermore, the widespread use of remote monitoring medical devices, under the umbrella of the “Internet of Medical Things” (IoMT), has simplified the retrieval of patient information as they allow continuous monitoring and direct access to data by healthcare providers. However, due to possible issues in real-world settings, such as loss of connectivity, irregular use, misuse, or poor adherence to a monitoring program, the data collected might not be sufficient to implement accurate algorithms. For this reason, data augmentation techniques can be used to create synthetic datasets sufficiently large to train machine learning models. In this work, we apply the concept of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to perform a data augmentation from patient data obtained through IoMT sensors for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) monitoring. We also apply an explainable AI algorithm to demonstrate the accuracy of the synthetic data by comparing it to the real data recorded by the sensors. The results obtained demonstrate how synthetic datasets created through a well-structured GAN are comparable with a real dataset, as validated by a novel approach based on machine learning.

IoT networks are increasingly popular nowadays to monitor critical environments of different nature, significantly increasing the amount of data exchanged. Due to the huge number of connected IoT devices, security of such networks and devices is therefore a critical issue. Detection systems assume a crucial role in the cyber-security field: based on innovative algorithms such as machine learning, they are able to identify or predict cyber-attacks, hence to protect the underlying system. Nevertheless, specific datasets are required to train detection models. In this work we present MQTTset, a dataset focused on the MQTT protocol, widely adopted in IoT networks. We present the creation of the dataset, also validating it through the definition of a hypothetical detection system, by combining the legitimate dataset with cyber-attacks against the MQTT network. Obtained results demonstrate how MQTTset can be used to train machine learning models to implement detection systems able to protect IoT contexts.

The security of Internet of Things environments is a critical and trending topic, due to the nature of the networks and the sensitivity of the exchanged information. In this paper, we investigate the security of the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol, widely adopted in IoT infrastructures. We exploit two specific weaknesses of MQTT, identified during our research activities, allowing the client to configure the KeepAlive parameter and MQTT packets to execute an innovative cyber threat against the MQTT broker. In order to validate the exploitation of such vulnerabilities, we propose SlowTT, a novel “Slow” denial of service attack aimed at targeting MQTT through low-rate techniques, characterized by minimum attack bandwidth and computational power requirements. We validate SlowTT against real MQTT services, by considering both plaintext and encrypted communications and by comparing the effects of the attack when targeting different application daemons and protocol versions. Results show that SlowTT is extremely successful, and it can exploit the identified vulnerability to execute a denial of service against the IoT network by keeping the connection alive for a long time.

Results show that the attack is successful and it is able to exploit the identified vulnerability to lead a DoS on the victim with limited attack resources.

Plant varieties are named and released based on distinct, unique and stable characteristics but may be maintained separately by genebanks or stock centers under separate accession identification numbers. Genetic heterogeneity of the original variety, genetic drift, failure to exclude cross pollination, and propagation error may erode the integrity of genetic resources. The availability of resequencing and genotyping data for duplicate samples enables an analysis to clarify the relationship between specific varieties or independently curated accessions of the same variety while also assessing the fidelity of germplasm maintenance. We accessed both Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) array genotypes and resequencing data for two important tomato varieties ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’ that have been maintained as separate accessions in collections as important resources for the research and breeding communities. Our analysis of these data suggests that polymorphism rates from resequencing of cultivated tomato are overestimated in the literature due to heterozygous calls caused by either sequence error or coalignment of repetitive sequences. We defined a set of 32,352 robust SNPs from a file containing data for all samples and we compared the distribution of data with SNPs called from a genotyping array. For both analyses, intravariety variation was found in haplotype blocks, with the same haplotypes identified using SNPs detected from array and sequence data. The distribution pattern of variation across the entire genome sequence was similar for both ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’. Overall, the differences between distinct accessions of a variety were nearly as great as the differences between ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’. The similarities between ‘UC82’ and ‘M82’ range from 99.33% to 99.74% and are highly consistent with a common pedigree and shared selection from partially inbred progeny. The data also suggest that these tomato genetic resources have been propagated with high fidelity.

En el presente artículo, los autores evalúan los efectos psicológicos de la “prueba ilícita”. Para ello, parten de delimitar su concepto, para luego analizar si esta tiene alguna influencia en el juez al momento de resolver un caso. Partiendo de consideraciones psicológicas, en concreto, la llamada teoría del “razonamiento motivado” y la “hipótesis de la justicia motivada”, evalúan mediante un estudio empírico si los jueces toman en cuenta dicha prueba al momento de decidir, pese a estar obligados legalmente a no hacerlo. Adicionalmente, proponen algunos mecanismos que podrían ser empleados, tanto por los litigantes como por los sistemas jurídicos, para mitigar los efectos de la prueba ilícita.

The reconstruction of oromandibular defects can be challenging, particularly when considerable amounts of bone and soft tissues are lost. In such cases, the use of a single flap may be unsatisfactory and a concomitant free flap is needed. Here we present a chimeric, thoracodorsal perforator-scapular free flap based on the angular artery of the subscapular system (TDAP-Scap-aa) as an alternative technique for single flap reconstruction of extensive oromandibular defects. The authors studied patients who underwent reconstructions of extensive oromandibular defects with a TDAP-Scap-aa free flap. The operative technique and the clinical experiences are described. Postoperatively, surgical complications were classified with the Clavien-Dindo Classification. Five male patients (59.4 ± 8.8 years) were treated with the TDAP-Scap-aa. Average sizes for harvested hard and soft tissue components, which are both included in the flap and completely independently from each other, were 10.4 ± 1.5 cm of bone length, 2.6 ± 0.3 cm of bone height, 11.6 ± 4.8 cm of skin paddle length and 8.4 ± 1.7 cm of skin paddle width. The overall mean operation time (cut-suture) was 14.6 ± 0.9 h. The postoperative follow-up was 6 months. No complications requiring surgical treatment as well as donor site nerve damages were observed. In comparison to other double free flaps, the TDAP-Scap-aa offers several advantages such as higher amounts of hard and soft tissues without prolonged operation times, and provides satisfying aesthetic outcomes and little donor site morbidity due to the preservation of muscle and nerve structures. Objectives: To compare physical capacity and body composition between children with burn injuries at approximately 4 years postburn and healthy, fit children.Study Design: In this retrospective, case-control study, we analyzed the strength, aerobic capacity, and body composition of children with severe burn injuries (n = 40) at discharge, after completion of a 6- to 12-week rehabilitative exercise training program, and at 3-4 years postburn. Values were expressed as a relative percentage of those in age- and sex-matched children for comparison (n = 40 for discharge and postexercise; n = 40 for 3.5 years postburn).Results: At discharge, lean body mass was 89% of that in children without burn injuries, and exercise rehabilitation restored this to 94% (P < .01). At 3.5 years postburn, lean body mass (94%), bone mineral content (89%), and bone mineral density (93%; each P ≤ .02) remained reduced, whereas total body fat was increased (148%, P = .01). Cardiorespiratory fitness remained lower in children with burn injuries both after exercise training (75%; P < .0001) and 3.5 years later (87%; P < .001). Peak torque (60%; P < .0001) and average power output (58%; P < .0001) were lower after discharge. Although exercise training improved these, they failed to reach levels achieved in healthy children without burns (83-84%; P < .0001) but were maintained at 85% and 82%, respectively, 3.5 years later (P < .0001).Conclusions: Although the benefits of rehabilitative exercise training on strength and cardiorespiratory capacity are maintained at almost 4 years postburn, they are not restored fully to the levels of healthy children. Although the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon remains elusive, these findings suggest that future development of continuous exercise rehabilitation interventions after discharge may further narrow the gap in relation to healthy adolescents.
