The aim of the present study was to examine whether sleep duration was associated with ADHD-like symptoms in healthy, well-developing school-aged children.Patients and methods: Thirty-five healthy children (20 boys, 15 girls), aged 7–11 years participated in the present study. Each child wore an actigraphic device on their nondominant wrist for two nights prior to use of polysomnography to assess their typical sleep periods. On the third night, sleep was recorded via ambulatory assessment of sleep architecture in the child's natural sleep environment employing portable polysomnography equipment. Teachers were asked to report symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity on the revised Conners Teacher Rating Scale.Results: Shorter sleep duration was associated with higher levels of teacher-reported ADHD-like symptoms in the domains of cognitive problems and inattention. No significant association between sleep duration and hyperactivity symptoms was evident.Conclusion: Short sleep duration was found to be related to teacher-derived reports of ADHD-like symptoms of inattention and cognitive functioning in healthy children.Keywords: ADHD-like symptoms, sleep duration, inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, healthy school-aged children

Discoveries of oil and gas fields under severe conditions of temperature (above 150°C) or pressure (in excess of 50 MPa) have been made in various regions of the world. In the North Sea, production is scheduled from deep reservoirs at 190°C and 110 MPa. This brings with it important challenges for predicting the properties of reservoir fluids, both from an experimental and a theoretical standpoint. In order to perform fluid studies for these reservoir conditions, IFP has developed a specific mercury-free high pressure apparatus with sapphire windows, a phase sampling device and viscosity determination by the capillary tube method. Its application is illustrated here using examples of real fluids and model mixtures. This equipment was first used to measure volumetric properties for gases. It has been shown that very high compressibility factors can be found with HP-HT gas condensates. This has a strong influence on recovery factors during primary depletion. In order to predict more accurately the volumetric properties of mixtures under these conditions, we propose to use a conventional equation of state, such as Peng-Robinson, with two improvements :- a modified temperature-dependent volume translation method, calibrated for high pressure density data; the method is simple, more accurate than other volume translation methods and fully consistent with lumping procedures;- a quadratic mixing rule on the covolume. Specific phase behavior can also be found. At low temperatures, wax crystallization can occur from a fluid which is a gas condensate at reservoir temperature. This feature is due to the simultaneous presence of abundant methane and heavy paraffins. A study of model fluids in a sapphire cell has allowed us to identify the possible types of phase diagrams. Although generally not considered to be an important parameter, gas viscosity may have some importance in the production of HP-HT accumulations, because of high flow rates. Viscosity models exhibit significant uncertainties because of large viscosity contrasts between the individual components of the reservoir fluid. In order to test and improve prediction methods, we started the acquisition of viscosity data under representative conditions. Special care was taken in the implementation of the capillary tube method, so that low viscosities (down to 0. 02 mPa. s) could be measured with high accuracy at pressures up to 120 MPa on simple systems, such as methane, n-pentane, nitrogen, and nitrogen-pentane mixtures. As a result, it was possible to evaluate mixing rules for viscosity predictions. Les découvertes de pétrole ou de gaz dans des conditions sévères de température (plus de 150°C) ou de pression (plus de 50 MPa) se comptent dans plusieurs bassins à travers le monde. En mer du Nord, on prévoit de mettre en production des gisements dont les conditions de fond vont jusqu'à 110 MPa et 190°C. Ces caractéristiques constituent un défi pour la prédiction des propriétés des fluides de gisement, aussi bien au niveau expérimental que théorique. Dans le but d'étudier les fluides à ces températures et pressions, l'IFP a construit un équipement à haute pression sans mercure, équipé de hublots en saphir, d'une cellule de prélèvement de phase, et d'un dispositif de mesure de viscosité par la méthode du tube capillaire. Son application est illustrée ici par des exemples de fluides réels et des mélanges synthétiques. L'équipement a été employé en premier lieu pour mesurer les propriétés volumétriques des gaz. Il apparaît ainsi que des facteurs de compressibilité très élevés peuvent être atteints avec des gaz à condensat HP-HT. Les conséquences en sont importantes sur les taux de récupération envisageables. De manière à améliorer la prédiction des propriétés volumétriques des mélanges dans ces conditions, on propose d'utiliser une équation d'état classique, comme celle de Peng-Robinson, avec deux améliorations : - une translation de volume améliorée, mise au point sur la base de données de masse volumique à haute pression ; cette méthode est simple, plus précise que les méthodes antérieures de translation de volume, et cohérente avec les procédures de regroupement classiques ; - une règle de mélange quadratique sur le covolume. Des comportements particuliers peuvent aussi se rencontrer en matière d'équilibres de phase. À basse température, les paraffines peuvent cristalliser à partir du fluide, qui est pourtant un gaz à condensat à la température du gisement. Cette caractéristique est due à l'abondance simultanée de méthane et de paraffines lourdes. Une étude de fluides synthétiques dans une cellule saphir nous a permis d'identifier les types de diagramme de phase possibles. Bien qu'elle ne soit généralement pas considérée comme un paramètre important, la viscosité du gaz peut jouer un rôle significatif dans la production des gisements HP-HT, car les vitesses de production sont parfois très élevées. Les modèles de prédiction de la viscosité présentent des incertitudes importantes, du fait du grand contraste de viscosité entre les constituants du fluide. De façon à tester et à améliorer ces modèles, nous avons commencé à acquérir des données dans des conditions représentatives. Un soin particulier a été apporté à l'implantation de la méthode capillaire, de sorte que nous avons pu mesurer des basses viscosités (aussi faibles que 0,02 mPa. s) avec une précision raisonnable jusqu'à des pressions de 120 MPa, sur des systèmes simples : méthane, azote, n-pentane, mélange azote-pentane. Ces données nous ont permis d'évaluer les règles de mélange utilisées dans certains modèles de viscosité.

The propagation of plasmons on magnetically biased graphene sheets is addressed. The analysis is based on the transverse resonance method extended to handle the graphene conductivity tensor and allows easily accounting for substrate effects. A transcendental equation is obtained for the propagation constant of the resulting hybrid transverse magnetic-transverse electric mode. A closed-form approximate expression for a graphene layer sandwitched between two different media is also provided. Application of the method shows that the presence of a magnetic field leads to extreme field localization, namely, very small guided wavelength, as compared with usual plasmons in graphene or noble metals. The extent of field localization and its frequency can be dynamically controlled by modifying the applied magnetostatic and electrostatic bias field, respectively. These features could enable extreme device miniaturization and enhanced resolution in sensing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Welded joints are often weakened areas due to geometrical stress concentration and heterogeneous materials. This study analyses both the dynamic strain rate sensitivity of materials constituting an armoured steel fillet welded joint: Base Metal (BM), Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) and Welded Metal (WM), and their influence on the mechanical behavior of such welded joint submitted to impact loadings. Firstly, the quasi-static and dynamic behaviors of the BM, HAZ and WM are characterized and discussed. A specific approach is developed to generate the HAZ material using a thermal treatment. Hardness and grain size are used to validate the replicated HAZ. Secondly, the quasi-static and dynamic true stress-strain relations of the BM, HAZ and WM are determined thanks to a video tracking procedure and a Bridgman–LeRoy correction. It appears that the BM is not rate sensitive from quasi-static up to 1350 s -1 . On the contrary, the HAZ appears to be rate sensitive, but by softening. The WM shows a strong viscous hardening. Parameters of Johnson–Cook behavior laws are identified on those three materials by combining a direct method and a reverse engineering approach. In a third part, a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is led on two welded substructures submitted to impact loading. The comparison with experimental results highlights the added value of implementing HAZ material parameters in the models to better localize the initiation of failure mechanisms. Welded joints, due to their manufacturing process, are commonly weakened areas. This study provides a pragmatic methodology to analyze the dynamic behavior of the Base Metal (BM) and the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) of an HSS (High Strength Steel) fillet welded joint. Firstly, a specific approach has been developed to generate the HAZ material using a thermal treatment. Hardness and grain size are used to validate the replicated HAZ. This approach appears efficient and repeatable. Secondly, the true stress-strain quasi-static and dynamic behaviors up to failure of the BM and the HAZ have been determined. This characterization was performed thanks to a video tracking procedure and Bridgman-LeRoy correction. The comparison between these two materials shows that the thermal field of the welding process increases the HAZ yield stress and hardening while decreasing the strain at failure. It appears that the base metal is not rate sensitive from quasi-static up to 1350 s-1. On the contrary, the heat affected material appears to be rate sensitive, but by softening. This unexpected dynamic material softening requires further analyses. A first Finite Element (FE) numerical analysis on a welded substructure submitted to impact loading shows a strong influence of the HAZ on the initiation of failure mechanisms. Objective The objective was to compare, in a real-world setting, the risk of mental and physical health events associated with different antipsychotic drugs (clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine and first-generation antipsychotics) in patients with SZ. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study using administrative data. Outcome measures included any mental health event (suicide, hospitalization or emergency visit for mental disorders) and physical health event (death other than suicide, hospitalization or emergency visit for physical disorders). Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios of the events associated with the use of the different antipsychotic drugs. Results The cohort included 18 869 adult patients living in the province of Quebec (Canada) with SZ and starting antipsychotic drugs between January 1998 and December 2005. Results show that quetiapine and not using any antipsychotics were associated with an increased risk of mental and physical health events as compared to other drugs. The second finding is the confirmation of better performance of clozapine. The results were robust across sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Both findings call for an international public health and drug agencies surveillance of 'real-world' antipsychotic medication to ensure the optimal choices in treatment guidelines for SZ. Notwithstanding its effects on the classical visual system allowing image formation, light acts upon several non-image-forming (NIF) functions including body temperature, hormonal secretions, sleep-wake cycle, alertness, and cognitive performance. Studies have shown that NIF functions are maximally sensitive to blue wavelengths (460-480 nm), in comparison to longer light wavelengths. Higher blue light sensitivity has been reported for melatonin suppression, pupillary constriction, vigilance, and performance improvement but also for modulation of cognitive brain functions. Studies investigating acute stimulating effects of light on brain activity during the execution of cognitive tasks have suggested that brain activations progress from subcortical regions involved in alertness, such as the thalamus, the hypothalamus, and the brainstem, before reaching cortical regions associated with the ongoing task. In the course of aging, lower blue light sensitivity of some NIF functions has been reported. Here, we first describe neural pathways underlying effects of light on NIF functions and we discuss eye and cerebral mechanisms associated with aging which may affect NIF light sensitivity. Thereafter, we report results of investigations on pupillary constriction and cognitive brain sensitivity to light in the course of aging. Whereas the impact of light on cognitive brain responses appears to decrease substantially, pupillary constriction seems to remain more intact over the lifespan. Altogether, these results demonstrate that aging research should take into account the diversity of the pathways underlying the effects of light on specific NIF functions which may explain their differences in light sensitivity.
