4. Establishing a Relationship between Residence Hall Design and Depression in First-Year College Students

Abstract

The well-being of college students can be impacted by aspects of the physical environment, especially during key life transitions such as beginning college during a pandemic. This repeated cross-sectional study investigates the influence of a newly constructed living-learning neighborhood on first-year residents' mental well-being, specifically self-reported depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) if residential first-year students' ratings of depression reflected differences between two built environments: old residential facilities and newer facilities that were part of a neighborhood, (2) if gender has an effect on these perceptions, and (3) if increased environmental satisfaction with different spaces in the new neighborhood drives lower depression scores. Students in two cohorts (n[subscript cohort 1] = 120; n[subscript cohort 2] = 112) were surveyed during the pandemic in the summers of 2020 and 2021. To improve the accuracy of predicting depression, participants' subjective satisfaction with their lives was controlled when investigating the influence of a change in the environment. First-year students who lived in the new neighborhood reported significantly lower depression scores than did their counterparts who lived in the old residential facilities. Results also reveal that this reduction in depression holds regardless of gender. Finally, as college residents' overall environmental satisfaction increases, their feelings of depression decrease, after controlling for their life satisfaction. Further, satisfaction within the personal residential (micro) environment has the strongest correlation with mental well-being. The findings from this study allude to the residential environment being the functional area that is most predictive of college residents' mental well-being. Abstract

The paper presents a model-based demand-responsive traffic control system for mixed traffic conditions using sample travel time data. The model incorporates mixed traffic characteristics such as heterogeneity, limited lane discipline of varied vehicle types, and spatio-temporal traffic dynamics across the width of the road. The methodology includes optimization of intersection performance by accommodating the varying traffic demand through signal timing variables. On validation, the model yielded reliable queue estimates within a close proximity of the actual, ranging from 20 to 40 meters. Upon optimization, the proposed model reduced total intersection delay by 15.42% on an average across 14 cycles, for near-saturated traffic conditions. The optimal green splits are found to be responsive to the varying traffic demand. The proposed system is simple and can be easily implemented in the mixed traffic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Maternal folate status and placental vascular malperfusion: Findings from a high-risk US minority birth cohort.

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal folate deficiency was associated with preeclampsia (PE) and PE was associated with placental maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM). However, no study has examined the association of maternal folate status with placental MVM.Methods: We examined the association of maternal folate status and placental MVM in the Boston Birth Cohort. Primary exposure variables were maternal self-reported multivitamin supplement (<2, 3-5, >5 times/week) per trimester; and plasma folate levels (nmol/L) after birth. Primary outcome was presence/absence of placental MVM defined by the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group standard classification. Covariates included demographics, chronic hypertension, clinically diagnosed PE, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, gestational and pre-gestational diabetes, overweight/obesity, maternal cigarette smoking and alcohol use. Associations between folate and placental MVM were evaluated using multivariate logistic regressions.Results: Of 3001 mothers in this study, 18.8% of mothers had PE, 37.5% had MVM. Mothers with the lowest self-reported frequency of folate intake had the highest risk of MVM (OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.03-2.05), after adjusting for the covariates. Consistently, among a subset of 939 mothers with plasma folate levels, folate insufficiency was associated with increased risk of MVM (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.03-2.63), after adjusting for the covariables. As expected, mothers with low folate and placental MVM had highest rates of PE compared to those of high folate and no MVM (p < 0.001).Discussion: In this high-risk birth cohort, low maternal folate status was associated with increased risk of placental MVM.
