Acute barium poisoning is a rare but life-threatening method of suicide attempt, and it is a challenging disease in the emergency department. We report a case of barium carbonate poisoning in a 21-year-old man who ingested a large dose to attempt suicide and presented with gastrointestinal symptoms, gradual muscular weakness, and severe hypokalemia (K + 1.63 mmol/L). He was promptly managed with gastric lavage, respiratory support, and large doses of oral and intravenous potassium supplementation. In addition, intravenous sodium thiosulfate and continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration were administered to reduce the serum concentration of barium ions. Following comprehensive treatment, the patient recovered within 5 days and discharged home for 12 days. Clinicians should be vigilant when a patient presents gastrointestinal symptoms and limb weakness, associated with severe hypokalemia and cardiac arrhythmia over a short disease course as these may indicate potential barium poisoning. Furthermore, we advocate for paying more attention to the management of toxic substances and the mental health education of young adults.

Accurate and rapid release of earthquake quick report information is a standard to measure the information service level and ability of earthquake industry, and also reflects the social service ability of earthquake system. In this paper, the development technology of earthquake quick report information software products and earthquake auxiliary products based on JOPENS system and EQIM system developed by Provincial Earthquake Agency are introduced, for the developers to achieve rapid release of earthquake reports and related information, select the system data for their own needs to provide a reference for the second development.

The development and deployment of diverse resistance sources in new wheat cultivars underpin the durable control of stripe rust. In the present study, two loci for adult plant resistance (APR), QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2, were identified in the Chinese wheat breeding line Shaanmai 155. QYrSM155.1 was mapped to a 3.0-cM interval between the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers AX-109583610 and AX-110907562 on chromosome arm 2BL. QYrSM155.2 was mapped to a 2.1-cM interval flanked by the SNP markers AX-110378556 and AX-86173526 on chromosome arm 7AS. A genome-wide association study was used to identify markers associated with APR in a panel of 411 spring wheat lines. Thirteen and 11 SNPs were significantly associated with QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2, respectively, corresponding to physical intervals of 653.75–655.52 Mb on 2BL and 81.63–83.93 Mb on 7AS. To characterize the haplotype variation and the distribution of these QTL, haplotype analysis was performed based on these SNPs in an independent panel of 1101 worldwide wheat accessions. Three major haplotypes (2B_h1, 2B_h2, and 2B_h3) for QYrSM155.1 and four major haplotypes (7A_h1, 7A_h2, 7A_h3, and 7A_h4) for QYrSM155.2 were identified. Accessions individually harboring QYrSM155.1_h1 and QYrSM155.2_h1 haplotypes and their combination displayed resistance. Additional assays of 1306 current Chinese cultivars and breeding lines using markers flanking QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2 indicated that the resistance haplotypes of the two QTL were present in respectively 1.45% and 14.16% of lines. Increasing resistance haplotype frequencies at these two loci using marker-assisted selection should benefit wheat production in China.

The current article focuses on the morphological and molecular characterization of the often inconspicuous genus Amicula. This recently erected genus from brackish and marine sediments was monotypic but here we describe two new tropical species: Amicula micronesica sp. nov. and Amicula vermiculata sp. nov. Once considered an incertae sedis genus regarding its higher rank taxonomy, its position among the family Diploneidaceae is proposed here by molecular phylogenetics. The complete plastid and mitochondrial genomes of Amicula micronesica sp. nov. are also presented here. It appears that the 177614-bp long mitogenome is the biggest yet recorded among stramenopiles, due to its invasion by 57 introns. Moreover, it utilizes the genetic code 4 for translation instead of the code 1 usually found among diatoms.

Hyperparathyroidism-induced hypercalcemic crisis is a rare presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by uncontrolled and immoderate secretion of parathyroid hormone. The most common presentation in primary hyperparathyroidism is renal stones, soft tissue calcification, cystic bone disease, and even hypercalcemic crisis. We report a patient who presented with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome due to extreme hypercalcemia (serum calcium concentration, 4.79 mmol/L [2.15–2.25 mmol/L]) resulting from primary hyperparathyroidism (serum parathyroid hormone concentration, 2215 pg/mL). The complications in this patient were complete cardiac damage and acute kidney injury. On the basis of the hypercalcemic crisis, the patient subsequently underwent surgical resection of parathyroid adenoma. Two days after surgery, her serum calcium and parathyroid hormone concentrations were normal. The patient had a good recovery after a series of other relevant therapies. In conclusion, surgery should be taken into consideration for hyperparathyroidism.

Background and aims – The diatom genus Simonsenia has been considered for some time a minor taxon, limited in its distribution to fresh and slightly brackish waters. Recently, knowledge of its diversity and geographic distribution has been enhanced with new species described from brackish-marine waters of the southern Iberian Peninsula and from inland freshwaters of South China, and here we report novel Simonsenia from fully marine waters.Methods – New isolates of Simonsenia species were obtained from marine waters, the littoral zone of the Korean Yellow Sea coast and the Gulf of Mexico in Corpus Christi (Texas), and documented in LM, SEM and with DNA sequence data (plastid-encoded rbcL and psbC). Phylogenetic trees of raphid diatoms were constructed to assess the relationships of the new species and of the genus as a whole.Key results and conclusions – Two novel species of Simonsenia (S. eileencoxiae and S. paucistriata) are described and a further putative taxon is characterized morphologically. The molecular phylogeny of the new Simonsenia species and previously sequenced species supports both the monophyly of the genus and its place within the Bacillariaceae. The Simonsenia clade clusters with clades composed of Cylindrotheca, Denticula and some Nitzschia spp. (including N. amphibia, N. frustulum, N. inconspicua). Hence Simonsenia is firmly positioned within the Bacillariaceae by molecular phylogenies, confirming its position within this group based on the possession of a canal raphe and its ultrastructure, and rejecting its classification within the Surirellaceae. Morphological data from the new Simonsenia species is typical for the genus, with a “simonsenioid” canal raphe type supported over the valve face with fenestral braces, alar canals connecting the canal raphe with the cell lumen, and the presence of fenestrae between the alar canals externally. Our results indicate unequivocally that the biogeography and the biodiversity of Simonsenia remain highly underestimated.

Crown rot (CR) is a soil-borne disease of wheat in arid and semiarid areas of the world. The incidence rate and severity of CR are increasing with each passing year, which seriously threatens the safety of world wheat production. Here, 522 wheat varieties/lines representing genetic diversity were used to identify and evaluate the resistance source to CR disease. Six varieties, including Zimai 12, Xinong 509, Mazhamai, Sifangmai, and Dawson, were classified as resistant ® to CR. Seventy-nine varieties were classified as moderately resistant (MR) to CR, accounting for 15.13% of the tested varieties. The wheat 660 K SNP array was used to identify resistance loci by genome-wide association analysis (GWAS). A total of 33 SNPs, located on chromosomes 1A, 1B, 1D, 4A, and 4D, were significantly correlated with seedling resistance to CR in two years. Among them, one SNP on chromosome 1A and nine SNPs on chromosome 1B showed most significant resistance to disease, phenotypic variance explained (PVE) by these SNPs were more than 8.45%. Except that significant locus AX-110436287 and AX109621209 on chromosome 1B and AX-94692276 on 1D are close to the already reported QTL, other SNPs are newly discovered resistance loci. These results could lay a strong theoretical foundation for the genetic improvement and breeding for CR resistance in wheat.

Stomata are valves on the leaf surface controlling carbon dioxide (CO2) influx for photosynthesis and water loss by transpiration. Thus, plants have to evolve elaborate mechanisms controlling stomatal aperture to allow efficient photosynthesis while avoid excessive water loss. Light is not only the energy source for photosynthesis but also an important signal regulating stomatal movement during dark-to-light transition. Our knowledge concerning blue and red light signaling and light-induced metabolite changes that contribute to stomatal opening are accumulating. This review summarizes recent advances on the signaling components that lie between the perception of blue/red light and activation of the PM H+-ATPases, and on the negative regulation of stomatal opening by red light-activated phyB signaling and ultraviolet (UV-B and UV-A) irradiation. Besides, light-regulated guard cell (GC)-specific metabolic levels, mesophyll-derived sucrose, and CO2 concentration within GCs also play dual roles in stomatal opening. Thus, light-induced stomatal opening is tightly accompanied by brake mechanisms, allowing plants to coordinate carbon gain and water loss. Knowledge on the mechanisms regulating the trade-off between stomatal opening and closure may have potential applications toward generating superior crops with improved water use efficiency (CO2 gain vs. water loss).

Psoriasis is reported to be a common chronic immune-mediated skin disease characterized by abnormal keratinocytes and cell proliferation. Perilla leaves are rich in essential oils, fatty acids, and flavonoids, which are recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, the alleviating effect of essential oil (PO) extracted from Perilla frutescens stems and leaves on imiquimod (IMQ) -induced psoriasis-like lesions in BALB/c mice were investigated. Results showed that PO ameliorated psoriasis-like lesions in vivo, reduced the expression of lymphocyte antigen 6 complex locus G6D (Ly-6G), which is a marker of neutrophil activation, and inhibited the expression of inflammatory factors interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). In addition, PO significantly decreased the expression of cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1, interleukin 23 (IL-23), interleukin 17 (IL-17), and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB). Furthermore, the down-regulation of mRNA levels of psoriasis-related pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-17, interleukin 22 (IL-22), IL-23, interferon-α (IFN-α), and Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) was observed with the treatment of PO. All results show a concentration dependence of PO, with low concentrations showing the best results. These results suggest that PO effectively alleviated psoriasis-like skin lesions and down-regulated inflammatory responses, which indicates that PO could potentially be used for further studies on inflammation-related skin diseases such as psoriasis and for the treatment of psoriasis such as psoriasis natural plant essential oil resources.

A recombinant inbred line population, derived from a cross between a high light-tolerant wheat Triticum aestivum cv. Xiaoyan 54 and a high yielding, but high light-sensitive variety, Jing 411, was used to explore the genetic relation between photosynthesis and grain yield-related traits. The net CO2 assimilation rate, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, leaf area index, plant height, spike number, biomass, grain yield, and harvest index were evaluated in the field across two consecutive years. The results reveal that a total of 57 quantitative trait loci (QTL) are found to be associated with the investigated traits. They distributed on almost all 21 chromosomes, except for chromosomes 5D, 6D, 7A, and 7D. The phenotypic variance explained by a single QTL ranged from 9.3% to 39.9% depending on traits and QTL. Of these QTL, 12 QTL clusters were found to regulate at least 2 of the investigated traits, which distributed on 8 chromosomes, 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A, 3B, 4B and 5A. Seven QTL clusters were associated with both photosynthesis and grain yield-related traits, indicative of their genetic relation. Two QTL clusters on 2D and 4B were co-located with two reduced-height genes, Rht8 and Rht-B1b, respectively. These QTL clusters may be used as potential targets for wheat radiation use efficiency improvement in the future.

Abstract Background The cuticle covers the surface of the polysaccharide cell wall of leaf epidermal cells and forms an essential diffusion barrier between the plant and the environment. The cuticle is composed of cutin and wax. Cuticular wax plays an important role in the survival of plants by serving as the interface between plants and their biotic and abiotic environments, especially restricting nonstomatal water loss. Leaf cuticular waxes of hexaploid wheat at the seedling stage mainly consist of primary alcohols, aldehydes, fatty acids, alkane and esters. Primary alcohols account for more than 80% of the total wax load. Therefore, we cloned several genes encoding fatty acyl-coenzyme A reductases from wheat and analyzed their function in yeast and plants. We propose the potential use of these genes in wheat genetic breeding. Results We reported the cloning and characterization of three TaFARs, namely TaFAR6, TaFAR7 and TaFAR8, encoding fatty acyl-coenzyme A reductases (FAR) in wheat leaf cuticle. Expression analysis revealed that TaFAR6, TaFAR7 and TaFAR8 were expressed at the higher levels in the seedling leaf blades, and were expressed moderately or weakly in stamen, glumes, peduncle, flag leaf blade, sheath, spike, and pistil. The heterologous expression of three TaFARs in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) led to the production of C24:0 and C26:0 primary alcohols. Transgenic expression of the three TaFARs in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and rice (Oryza sativa) led to increased accumulation of C24:0–C30:0 primary alcohols. Transient expression of GFP protein-tagged TaFARs revealed that the three TaFAR proteins were localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the site of wax biosynthesis. The three TaFAR genes were transcriptionally induced by drought, cold, heat, powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis) infection, abscisic acid (ABA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJa) treatments. Conclusions These results indicated that wheat TaFAR6, TaFAR7 and TaFAR8 are involved in biosynthesis of very-long-chain primary alcohols in hexaploid wheat and in response to multiple environmental stresses.

We report the chloroplast genome sequence of Nanofrustulum shiloi, a tiny araphid pennate diatom collected from the Adriatic Sea. The 160,994-bp N. shiloi genome displays a quadripartite structure and its gene repertoire resembles those of other diatom chloroplast genomes. Besides the genes located in the inverted repeat, psbY is duplicated. A gene-poor region in the large single-copy region contains multiple ORFs sharing sequence similarities with plasmids and chloroplast ORFs found in other diatom species. The genome features a single intron, a group II intron in petB. Phylogenomic analysis identified N. shiloi at a basal position within the araphid 2 clade.

Zingiber striolatum Diels (Z. striolatum), a widely popular vegetable in China, is famous for its medicinal and nutritional values. However, the anti-inflammatory effects of essential oil from Z. striolatum (EOZS) remain unclear. In this study, EOZS from seven regions in China were extracted and analyzed by GC–MS. LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells and 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-stimulated mice were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of EOZS. Results show that 116 compounds were identified in EOZS from seven locations. Samples 2, 4 and 5 showed the best capability on DPPH radical scavenging and NO inhibition. They also significantly reduced the production of ROS, pro-inflammatory cytokines, macrophage morphological changes, migration and phagocytic capability. Transcriptomics revealed MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways may be involved in the anti-inflammatory mechanism, and the predictions were proven by Western blotting. In TPA-induced mice, EOZS reduced the degree of ear swelling and local immune cell infiltration by blocking the activation of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways, which was consistent with the in vitro experimental results. Our research unveils the antioxidant capability and potential molecular mechanism of EOZS in regulating inflammatory response, and suggests the application of EOZS as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries.

Abstract Background The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of detecting the variation of sentinel lymphatic channels (SLCs) and sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in breast cancer patients using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Methods A total of 46 breast cancer patients were prospectively recruited in the study. All the participants received intradermal and peritumoral injection of microbubbles as contrast agent, and SLCs and SLNs were assessed preoperatively. Blue dye was injected subareolarly and peritumorally during the surgery. The SLNs detected by CEUS and blue dye were sent to the pathology laboratory for histopathological analysis. Results At least one SLC and SLN were detected by CEUS in all 46 cases. Three types of SLCs were detected, including superficial sentinel lymphatic channels (SSLCs), penetrating sentinel lymphatic channels (PSLCs), and deep sentinel lymphatic channels (DSLCs). Five lymphatic drainage patterns (LDPs) were found, including SSLC, PSLC, SSLC + PSLC, SSLC + DSLC, and SSLC + PSLC + DSLC. Only SSLC was detected on CEUS in 24 cases; only PSLC was detected in 3 cases; both SSLC and PSLC were detected in 8 cases; both SSLC and DSLC were detected in 7 cases; SSLC, PSLC, and DSLC were all detected in the remaining 4 cases. An actual LDP was defined on the combination of CEUS and dissection of the specimen. The accuracy rate of CEUS was 43/46. Interestingly, a bifurcated SLC was found in 8 patients. In 3 patients, a discontinuous SLC and non-enhanced SLN were found by CEUS. Also, no dyed SLNs were detected during the surgery. The axillary lymph nodes turned out tumor involved histologically. Conclusion CEUS is feasible to assess the variation of SLCs and SLNs preoperatively in breast cancer patients. SLNB is not suggested when a discontinuous SLC and non-enhanced SLN were detected by CEUS.

Cuticular wax accumulation and composition affects drought resistance in plants. Brachypodium distachyon plants subjected to water deficit and polyethylene glycol treatments resulted in a significant increase in total wax load, in which very-long-chain (VLC) alkanes were more sensitive to these treatments than other wax compounds, implying that VLC alkanes biosynthesis plays a more important role in drought resistance in B. distachyon. ECERIFERUM1 (CER1) has been reported to encode a core enzyme involved in VLC alkanes biosynthesis in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), but few corresponding genes are investigated in B. distachyon. Here, we identified eight CER1 homologous genes in B. distachyon, namely BdCER1-1 to BdCER1-8, and then analyzed their sequences feature, expression patterns, stress induction, and biochemical activities. These genes had similar protein structure to other reported CER1 and CER1-like genes, but displayed closer phylogenetic relationship to the rice OsGL1 genes. They were further found to exhibit various tissue expression patterns after being induced by abiotic stresses. Among them, BdCER1-8 gene showed extremely high expression in leaves. Heterologous introduction of BdCER1-8 into the Arabidopsis cer1 mutant rescued VLC alkanes biosynthesis. These results indicate that BdCER1 genes are likely to be involved in VLC alkanes biosynthesis of B. distachyon. Taken together, BdCER1-8 seems to play an explicit and predominant role in VLC alkanes biosynthesis in leaf. Our work provides important clues for further characterizing function of CER1 homologous genes in B. distachyon and also an option to improve drought resistance of cereal crops.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain quality traits that are controlled by quantitative traits loci (QTL) define suitable growing areas and potential end-use products of a wheat cultivar. To dissect QTL for these traits including protein content (GPC); test weight (TW); single kernel characterization system (SKCS)-estimated kernel weight (SKW); kernel diameter (KD); kernel hardness measured by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) hardness index (NHI); and SKCS-hardness index (SHI), a high-density genetic map with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers was developed using recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from Ning7840 × Clark. The RILs were evaluated for these quality traits in seven Oklahoma environments from 2001 to 2003. A total of 41 QTL with additive effects on different traits were mapped on most wheat chromosomes, excluding 1A, 2A, 3D, 4D, 6D, and 7B. Seven chromosome regions showed either tightly linked QTL or QTL with pleiotropic effects on two to four traits. Ten pairs of QTL showed additive × additive effects (AA), four QTL were involved in additive × environment (AE) effects, and one was involved in AAE effects. Two to eleven QTL for each of the six traits and 139 tightly linked markers to these QTL were identified. The findings shed light on the inheritance of wheat grain quality traits and provide DNA markers for manipulating these important traits to improve quality of new wheat cultivars.

The diploid Aegilops tauschii is the D-genome donor to hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum) and represents a potential source for genetic study in common wheat. The ubiquitous wax covering the aerial parts of plants plays an important role in protecting plants against non-stomatal water loss. Cuticular waxes are complex mixtures of very-long-chain fatty acids, alkanes, primary and/or secondary alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, triterpenes, sterols, and flavonoids. In the present work, primary alcohols were identified as the major components of leaf cuticular wax in Ae. tauschii, with C26:0-OH being the dominant primary alcohol. Analysis by scanning electron microscope revealed that dense platelet-shaped wax crystals were deposited on leaf surfaces of Ae. tauschii. Ten putative wax biosynthetic genes encoding fatty acyl-coenzyme A reductase (FAR) were identified in the genome of Ae. tauschii. Five of these genes, Ae.tFAR1, Ae.tFAR2, Ae.tFAR3, Ae.tFAR4, and Ae.tFAR6, were found expressed in the leaf blades. Heterologous expression of the five Ae.tFARs in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) showed that Ae.tFAR1, Ae.tFAR2, Ae.tFAR3, Ae.tFAR4, and Ae.tFAR6 were predominantly responsible for the accumulation of C16:0, C18:0, C26:0, C24:0, and C28:0 primary alcohols, respectively. In addition, nine Ae.tFAR paralogous genes were located on D chromosome of wheat and the wheat nullisomic–tetrasomic lines with the loss of Ae.tFAR3 and Ae.tFAR4 paralogous genes had significantly reduced levels of primary alcohols in the leaf blades. Collectively, these data suggest that Ae.tFAR1, Ae.tFAR2, Ae.tFAR3, Ae.tFAR4, and Ae.tFAR6 encode alcohol-forming FARs involved in the biosynthesis of primary alcohols in the leaf blades of Ae. tauschii. The information obtained in Ae. tauschii enables us to better understand wax biosynthesis in common wheat.

The glossy varieties (A14 and Jing 2001) and glaucous varieties (Fanmai 5 and Shanken 99) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were selected for evaluation of developmental changes in the composition and morphology of cuticular waxes on leaves and spikes. The results provide us with two different wax development patterns between leaf and spike. The general accumulation trend of the total wax load on leaf and spike surfaces is first to increase and then decrease during the development growth period, but these changes were caused by different compound classes between leaf and spike. Developmental changes of leaf waxes were mainly the result of variations in composition of alcohols and alkanes. In addition, diketones were the third important contributor to the leaf wax changes in the glaucous varieties. Alkanes and diketones were the two major compound classes that caused the developmental changes of spike waxes. For leaf waxes, β- and OH-β-diketones were first detected in flag leaves from 200-day-old plants, and the amounts of β- and OH-β-diketones were significantly higher in glaucous varieties compared with glossy varieties. In spike waxes, β-diketone existed in all varieties, but OH-β-diketone was detectable only in the glaucous varieties. Unexpectedly, the glaucous variety Fanmai 5 yielded large amounts of OH-β-diketone. There was a significant shift in the chain length distribution of alkanes between early stage leaf and flag leaf. Unlike C28 alcohol being the dominant chain length in leaf waxes, the dominant alcohol chain length of spikes was C24 or C26 depending on varieties. Epicuticular wax crystals on wheat leaf and glume were comprised of platelets and tubules, and the crystal morphology changed constantly throughout plant growth, especially the abaxial leaf crystals. Moreover, our results suggested that platelets and tubules on glume surfaces could be formed rapidly within a few days.

Here we present a formal description of Biremis panamae Barka, Witkowski et Weisenborn sp. nov., which was isolated from the marine littoral environment of the Pacific Ocean coast of Panama. The description is based on morphology (light and electron microscopy) and the rbcL, psbC and SSU sequences of one clone of this species. The new species is included in Biremis due to its morphological features; i.e. two marginal rows of foramina, chambered striae, and girdle composed of numerous punctate copulae. The new species also possesses a striated valve face which is not seen in most known representatives of marine littoral Biremis species. In this study we also present the relationship of Biremis to other taxa using morphology, DNA sequence data and observations of auxosporulation. Our results based on these three sources point to an evolutionary relationship between Biremis, Neidium and Scoliopleura. The unusual silicified incunabular caps present in them are known otherwise only in Muelleria, which is probably related to the Neidiaceae and Scoliotropidaceae. We also discuss the relationship between Biremis and the recently described Labellicula and Olifantiella.

Late-blind people, who adventitiously became blind in their adulthood, are a special group of the blind. Each of them has his/her own characteristics when returning to work. In this paper, methods on how late-blind teachers can effectively lecture sighted students are presented based on experience of authors with blindness. For late-blind teachers, only having the basic teaching skills as the sighted teachers is insufficient to lecture sighted students. They shall fully explore the knowledge and skills they acquired before their blindness. Much to be important, they have to take advantage of their physiological advantages (e.g., good sense of hearing and touching) and modern teaching tools (e.g., PowerPoint slides with voice navigation and screen reading software). With the accessible technology, the paper provides a specific case to describe the personalized teaching process in the rear of it. Through introducing an instance of micro-course about braille teaching (digit and part of English letter), the case takes a true reproduction that basically covers the entire teaching procedure. In fact, only in this way can the teaching tasks like lecturing and Q&A be accomplished smoothly.

We investigate the resonance problem and prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions to a second order parameter-dependent equation $ x''+f(t, x) = sp(t) $. We weaken the usual requirement on the sublinearity of perturbations when $ |x| $ becomes large; and develop a more general method to investigate the rotational characterizations of the Landesman-Lazer conditions. Furthermore, $ f $ does not satisfy the common sign condition, and even the global existence of the solution is not guaranteed.

Furthermore, in this context, the nonlinearity $ f $ does not satisfy the usual sign condition, and the global existence of solutions for the Cauchy problem associated to the equation is not guaranteed. Our approach is based on the Poincaré-Birkhoff twist theorem, a rotation number approach and the phase-plane analysis. Our result generalizes the result in Fonda and Ghirardelli [1] for second order parameter-dependent equations.

BackgroundSleep disorders are one of the most common non-motor symptoms in PD. It can cause a notable decrease in quality of life and functioning in PD patients, as well as place a huge burden on both patients and caregivers. Currently, there are numerous non-pharmacological interventions available to improve sleep quality in PD, with disagreement as to which intervention is most effective. This network meta-analysis was performed to compare and rank non-pharmacological interventions to explore their efficacy in improving sleep quality in PD and to select the best interventions, with a view to providing references and bases for the development of clinical treatments and care programs.MethodsThe PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were searched from inception to December 6, 2023. Two authors independently screened all studies, extracted the data, and evaluated risk of bias of included studies. STATA software version 17.0 was used to conduct the network meta-analysis.ResultsOur network meta-analysis included 29 studies involving 1,477 participants and 16 non-pharmacological interventions. Although most nonpharmacological interventions showed non-significant effects, the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values indicated that the best non-pharmacological intervention for sleep disorders was massage therapy (97.3%), followed by music therapy (94.2%), and Treadmill training (85.7%).ConclusionMassage therapy can be considered as an effective therapy for improving sleep quality in patients with PD. Due to limited quantity and quality of the included studies, more high quality studies are required to verify the conclusions of this network meta-analysis.Systematic review registrationidentifier CRD42023429339, PROSPERO (york.ac.uk).

We prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions for weakly coupled parametrized systems with a singularity of repulsive type at the origin and linear growth at infinity. The proof is based on a higher dimensional Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem and the phase-plane analysis of the solutions.

We consider the non-resonance with one-sided superlinear growth conditions for the indefinite planar system $ z' = f(t, z) $ from a rotation number viewpoint, and obtain the existence of $ 2\pi $-periodic solutions by applying a rotation number approach together with the Poincaré-Bohl theorem. We allow that the angular velocity of solutions of $ z' = f(t, z) $ is controlled by the angular velocity of solutions of two positively homogeneous and oddly symmetric systems $ z' = L_i(t, z), i = 1, 2 $ on the left half-plane, which have rotation numbers that satisfy $ \rho(L_1) > n/2 $ and $ \rho(L_2) < (n+1)/2 $, and allow $ f(t, z) $ to grow superlinearly on the right half-plane. In order to estimate the rotation angle difference of solutions, we develop a system methodology of "tracking" the angle difference of solutions of the system $ z' = f(t, z) $ on each small interval on the given side under sign-varying conditions.

Purple pericarps of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are a useful source of dietary anthocyanins. Previous mapping results indicated that the purple pericarp trait is controlled by two complementary genes located on chromosomes 7D and 2A. However, the identity of the genes and the mechanisms by which they regulate the trait are unknown. In this study, two transcription factors were characterised as anthocyanin activators in purple pericarps: TaPpm1 (purple pericarp-MYB 1) and TaPpb1 (purple pericarp-bHLH 1). Three non-functional variants were detected in the coding sequence of TaPpm1 from non-purple seed lines, in which the function of TaPpm1 was destroyed either by insertioninduced frame shifts or truncated peptides. There were six 261-bp tandem repeats in the promoter region of TaPpb1 in the purple-grained varieties, while there was only one repeat unit present in the non-purple varieties. Furthermore, using yeast two-hybrid, dual luciferase, yeast one-hybrid, and transient assays, we were able to demonstrate that the interaction of TaPpm1 and TaPpb1 co-regulates the synthesis of anthocyanin. Overall, our results provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of anthocyanin synthesis in the wheat pericarp and indicate the existence of an integrated regulatory mechanism that controls production. In order to build an intelligent tourism innovation ability evaluation system, this paper uses data mining technology to mine tour-ism information, combines modern people’s tourism needs to construct a regional innovation ability evaluation system and detects the effect of data mining with the support of logistic regression analysis. Moreover, this paper uses the life cycle theory framework to analyze the life cycle stages of regional tourism destinations, analyze the internal factors that form the characteristics and laws of specific stages, and take timely measures to artificially control and adjust the problems that need attention. In addition, this paper constructs an evaluation system of tourism innovation capability with intelligent effects. On this basis, this paper combines experimental analysis to evaluate the system constructed in this paper and takes Guilin regional tourism as an example to perform the analysis. The research results show that the system constructed in this paper has a certain effect, and the corresponding suggestions are given.

Artemisia Linn. is a large genus within the family Asteraceae that includes several important medicinal plants. Because of their similar morphology and chemical composition, traditional identification methods often fail to distinguish them. Therefore, developing an effective identification method for Artemisia species is an urgent requirement. In this study, we analyzed 15 chloroplast (cp) genomes, including 12 newly sequenced genomes, from 5 Artemisia species. The cp genomes from the five Artemisia species had a typical quadripartite structure and were highly conserved across species. They had varying lengths of 151,132–151,178 bp, and their gene content and codon preferences were similar. Mutation hotspot analysis identified four highly variable regions, which can potentially be used as molecular markers to identify Artemisia species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the five Artemisia species investigated in this study were sister branches to each other, and individuals of each species formed a monophyletic clade. This study shows that the cp genome can provide distinguishing features to help identify closely related Artemisia species and has the potential to serve as a universal super barcode for plant identification.

BackgroundThe prevalence and associated factors of dysphagia in Parkinson's disease (PD) are different in studies conducted in different countries. The purpose of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of dysphagia in PD and to clarify its associated factors.MethodsTwo researchers systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database, SinoMed and VIP databases and manually searched references in the retrieved articles to identify potential research subjects. The last search was conducted on June 28, 2022. Finally, a total of 58 studies including 60 observations with 20,530 PD patients were included in our meta-analysis.ResultsThe meta-analysis estimated that the pooled prevalence rate of dysphagia in PD was 36.9% (95% CI: 30.7–43.6%) and instrumental examination showed a higher prevalence (57.3%, 95% CI: 44.3–69.1%). Oceania showed the highest prevalence of dysphagia in PD (56.3%) compared to Africa (39.5%), Asia (38.6%), Europe (36.1%) and America (28.9%). Dysphagia in PD was associated with older age, lower body mass index, longer disease duration, higher Hoehn and Yahr stage and levodopa equivalent daily dose, PIGD subtype, severe motor symptoms, drooling and higher levels of depression, and lower quality of life.ConclusionsIn conclusion, our meta-analysis showed that dysphagia occurs in more than one-third of PD patients and was associated with several demographic characteristics and PD-related characteristics, motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms, as well as decreased quality of life. It deserves early screening, diagnosis, and treatment in clinical practice to prevent serious complications from dysphagia.

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects and mechanism of atractylodin (ATL) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in mice. We found that atractylodin could significantly reverse the effects of DSS-induced ulcerative colitis, such as weight loss, disease activity index score; shorten the colon length, and reverse the pathological changes in the colon of mice. Atractylodin could inhibit the activation of colonic macrophages by inhibiting the MAPK pathway and alleviate intestinal inflammation in the mouse model of ulcerative colitis. Moreover, it could protect the intestinal barrier by inhibiting the decrease of the tight junction proteins, ZO-1, occludin, and MUC2. Additionally, atractylodin could decrease the abundance of harmful bacteria and increase that of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract of mice, effectively improving the intestinal microecology. In an LPS-induced macrophage model, atractylodin could inhibit the MAPK pathway and expression of the inflammatory factors of macrophages. Atractylodin could also inhibit the production of lactate, which is the end product of glycolysis; inhibit the activity of GAPDH, which is an important rate-limiting enzyme in glycolysis; inhibit the malonylation of GAPDH, and, thus, inhibit the translation of TNF-α. Therefore, ours is the first study to highlight the potential of atractylodin in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and reveal its possible mechanism.
