The study is aimed to explore the potential of time-series airborne hyperspectral and satellite multispectral data to track the changes in spruce forest decline expressed by a composite spruce decline indicator. Vegetation indices and exergy of solar radiation extracted from remote sensing data are used to predict the development of the composite spruce health indicator. The canopy-level spectral reflectance properties of spruce stands are investigated to identify categories of spruce stand decline: healthy, initial decline, and initial to moderate decline. The sensitivity peaks for initial decline and initial to moderate decline of spruce are shown. The highest potential for the estimation of the composite spruce health indicator is demonstrated by vegetation indices WBI and NDVIred_edge from airborne hyperspectral data, and by PSRI, NDII and exergy of solar radiation from Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite multispectral data. MODIS data show only a poor correlation between the composite spruce stand health indicator and NDII index. The proposed methodology to obtain the distribution of the composite spruce decline indicator using remote sensing (RS) data promisingly suggests its applicability over a large forest area with potential time and economic benefits, since foliar spectral measurements, canopy chemistry, and laboratory analysis are not required. In Europe, both forest areaandgrowing stockhave increased since the 1950s,andEuropeanforestshave acted asa carbon sink during the last six decades. However, the contribution of different factors affecting the sink is not yet clear. In this study, historical inventory data were combined with land-use modelling data to reconstruct the development of forest area and age-structure between 1950 and 2010 without afforestation in two case study countries, Finland and the Czech Republic. These reconstructions were then used in a scenario analysis to assess the effects of afforestation, development of mean growing stock volume and age structure of forests on the forest biomass carbon stock. The results show that afforestation has affected the development of the mean age of forests, but has not changed its trend. There have been large increases in the mean volume of growing stock over the study period in both countries; the increase has occurred both in younger and older age-classes, and in both coniferous andbroadleaved species. As notmanycountries have sufficiently detailed inventory data available for such analysis, the presented case studies arevaluable indemonstrating that these changes occurred under very different circumstances. In both countries, the increase in the mean volume of growing stock has been the dominant factor explaining the increase in the forest biomass carbon stock compared with the effect of afforestation. Abstract: This paper is the outcome of a group discussion held at the Savonlinna meeting ‘Management of forest ecosystems and its impact on the GHG budget’. The aim of this break-out group discussion was to ‘Characterize forest management impacts on the GHG budget of forest ecosystems in different European regions’. In this paper we briefly characterize different options that a forest owner has in order to maintain or maximize forest carbon pools and carbon sequestration. These hectare scale descriptions of measures are then regarded in connection to the current state of European forests and how they can be combined with ongoing management trends and local issues. We point out the various possibilities that exist in European forests, where they are located, and where they could possibly be combined with adaptation. We identify these hotspots for largest growing stocks, largest peat areas, and, e.g. largest risks for loss of carbon due to fire or urban sprawl. We conclude that one common strategy cannot be designed. Within each region, local solutions have to be found that optimize goals and aim at integrated and sustainable land use. Abstract Reliable models are required to assess the impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems. Precise and independent data are essential to assess this accuracy. The flux measurements collected by the EUROFLUX project over a wide range of forest types and climatic regions in Europe allow a critical testing of the process-based models which were developed in the LTEEF project. The ECOCRAFT project complements this with a wealth of independent plant physiological measurements. Thus, it was aimed in this study to test six process-based forest growth models against the flux measurements of six European forest types, taking advantage of a large database with plant physiological parameters. The reliability of both the flux data and parameter values itself was not under discussion in this study. The data provided by the researchers of the EUROFLUX sites, possibly with local corrections, were used with a minor gap-filling procedure to avoid the loss of many days with observations. The model performance is discussed based on their accuracy, generality and realism. Accuracy was evaluated based on the goodness-of-fit with observed values of daily net ecosystem exchange, gross primary production and ecosystem respiration (gC m-2 d-1 ), and transpiration (kg H2 O m-2 d-1 ). Moreover, accuracy was also evaluated based on systematic and unsystematic errors. Generality was characterized by the applicability of the models to different European forest ecosystems. Reality was evaluated by comparing the modelled and observed responses of gross primary production, ecosystem respiration to radiation and temperature. The results indicated that: Accuracy . All models showed similar high correlation with the measured carbon flux data, and also low systematic and unsystematic prediction errors at one or more sites of flux measurements.
