Abstract

The Euclid mission, designed to map the geometry of the dark Universe, presents an unprecedented opportunity for advancing our understanding of the cosmos through its photometric galaxy cluster survey. This paper focuses on enhancing the precision of halo bias (HB) predictions, which is crucial for deriving cosmological constraints from the clustering of galaxy clusters. Our study is based on the peak-background split (PBS) model linked to the halo mass function (HMF); it extends with a parametric correction to precisely align with results from an extended set of $N$-body simulations carried out with the OpenGADGET3 code. Employing simulations with fixed and paired initial conditions, we meticulously analyze the matter-halo cross-spectrum and model its covariance using a large number of mock catalogs generated with Lagrangian Perturbation Theory simulations with the PINOCCHIO code. This ensures a comprehensive understanding of the uncertainties in our HB calibration. Our findings indicate that the calibrated HB model is remarkably resilient against changes in cosmological parameters including those involving massive neutrinos. The robustness and adaptability of our calibrated HB model provide an important contribution to the cosmological exploitation of the cluster surveys to be provided by the Euclid mission. This study highlights the necessity of continuously refining the calibration of cosmological tools like the HB to match the advancing quality of observational data. As we project the impact of our model on cosmological constraints, we find that, given the sensitivity of the Euclid survey, a miscalibration of the HB could introduce biases in cluster cosmology analyses. Our work fills this critical gap, ensuring the HB calibration matches the expected precision of the Euclid survey. Abstract

Euclid will collect an enormous amount of data during the mission's lifetime, observing billions of galaxies in the extragalactic sky. Along with traditional template-fitting methods, numerous machine learning algorithms have been presented for computing their photometric redshifts and physical parameters (PPs), requiring significantly less computing effort while producing equivalent performance measures. However, their performance is limited by the quality and amount of input information, to the point where the recovery of some well-established physical relationships between parameters might not be guaranteed. To forecast the reliability of Euclid photo-$z$s and PPs calculations, we produced two mock catalogs simulating Euclid photometry. We simulated the Euclid Wide Survey (EWS) and Euclid Deep Fields (EDF). We tested the performance of a template-fitting algorithm (Phosphoros) and four ML methods in recovering photo-$z$s, PPs (stellar masses and star formation rates), and the SFMS. To mimic the Euclid processing as closely as possible, the models were trained with Phosphoros-recovered labels. For the EWS, we found that the best results are achieved with a mixed labels approach, training the models with wide survey features and labels from the Phosphoros results on deeper photometry, that is, with the best possible set of labels for a given photometry. This imposes a prior, helping the models to better discern cases in degenerate regions of feature space, that is, when galaxies have similar magnitudes and colors but different redshifts and PPs, with performance metrics even better than those found with Phosphoros. We found no more than 3% performance degradation using a COSMOS-like reference sample or removing u band data, which will not be available until after data release DR1. The best results are obtained for the EDF, with appropriate recovery of photo-$z$, PPs, and the SFMS., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication on A&A

Abstract

Future data provided by the Euclid mission will allow us to better understand the cosmic history of the Universe. A metric of its performance is the figure-of-merit (FoM) of dark energy, usually estimated with Fisher forecasts. The expected FoM has previously been estimated taking into account the two main probes of Euclid, namely the three-dimensional clustering of the spectroscopic galaxy sample, and the so-called 3x2pt signal from the photometric sample (i.e., the weak lensing signal, the galaxy clustering, and their cross-correlation). So far, these two probes have been treated as independent. In this paper, we introduce a new observable given by the ratio of the (angular) two-point correlation function of galaxies from the two surveys. For identical (normalised) selection functions, this observable is unaffected by sampling noise, and its variance is solely controlled by Poisson noise. We present forecasts for Euclid where this multi-tracer method is applied and is particularly relevant because the two surveys will cover the same area of the sky. This method allows for the exploitation of the combination of the spectroscopic and photometric samples. When the correlation between this new observable and the other probes is not taken into account, a significant gain is obtained in the FoM, as well as in the constraints on other cosmological parameters. The benefit is more pronounced for a commonly investigated modified gravity model, namely the $\gamma$ parametrisation of the growth factor. However, the correlation between the different probes is found to be significant and hence the actual gain is uncertain. Abstract

Dusty, distant, massive ($M_*\gtrsim 10^{11}\,\rm M_\odot$) galaxies are usually found to show a remarkable star-formation activity, contributing on the order of $25\%$ of the cosmic star-formation rate density at $z\approx3$--$5$, and up to $30\%$ at $z\sim7$ from ALMA observations. Nonetheless, they are elusive in classical optical surveys, and current near-infrared surveys are able to detect them only in very small sky areas. Since these objects have low space densities, deep and wide surveys are necessary to obtain statistically relevant results about them. Euclid will be potentially capable of delivering the required information, but, given the lack of spectroscopic features at these distances within its bands, it is still unclear if it will be possible to identify and characterize these objects. The goal of this work is to assess the capability of Euclid, together with ancillary optical and near-infrared data, to identify these distant, dusty and massive galaxies, based on broadband photometry. We used a gradient-boosting algorithm to predict both the redshift and spectral type of objects at high $z$. To perform such an analysis we make use of simulated photometric observations derived using the SPRITZ software. The gradient-boosting algorithm was found to be accurate in predicting both the redshift and spectral type of objects within the Euclid Deep Survey simulated catalog at $z>2$. In particular, we study the analog of HIEROs (i.e. sources with $H-[4.5]>2.25$), combining Euclid and Spitzer data at the depth of the Deep Fields. We found that the dusty population at $3\lesssim z\lesssim 7$ is well identified, with a redshift RMS and OLF of only $0.55$ and $8.5\%$ ($H_E\leq26$), respectively. Abstract

The European Space Agency's Euclid mission is one of the upcoming generation of large-scale cosmology surveys, which will map the large-scale structure in the Universe with unprecedented precision. The development and validation of the SGS pipeline requires state-of-the-art simulations with a high level of complexity and accuracy that include subtle instrumental features not accounted for previously as well as faster algorithms for the large-scale production of the expected Euclid data products. In this paper, we present the Euclid SGS simulation framework as applied in a large-scale end-to-end simulation exercise named Science Challenge 8. Our simulation pipeline enables the swift production of detailed image simulations for the construction and validation of the Euclid mission during its qualification phase and will serve as a reference throughout operations. Our end-to-end simulation framework starts with the production of a large cosmological N-body & mock galaxy catalogue simulation. We perform a selection of galaxies down to I_E=26 and 28 mag, respectively, for a Euclid Wide Survey spanning 165 deg^2 and a 1 deg^2 Euclid Deep Survey. We build realistic stellar density catalogues containing Milky Way-like stars down to H<26. Using the latest instrumental models for both the Euclid instruments and spacecraft as well as Euclid-like observing sequences, we emulate with high fidelity Euclid satellite imaging throughout the mission's lifetime. We present the SC8 data set consisting of overlapping visible and near-infrared Euclid Wide Survey and Euclid Deep Survey imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy along with ground-based. Abstract

We investigate the accuracy of the perturbative galaxy bias expansion in view of the forthcoming analysis of the Euclid spectroscopic galaxy samples. We compare the performance of an Eulerian galaxy bias expansion, using state-of-art prescriptions from the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS), against a hybrid approach based on Lagrangian perturbation theory and high-resolution simulations. These models are benchmarked against comoving snapshots of the Flagship I N-body simulation at $z=(0.9,1.2,1.5,1.8)$, which have been populated with H$\alpha$ galaxies leading to catalogues of millions of objects within a volume of about $58\,h^{-3}\,{\rm Gpc}^3$. Our analysis suggests that both models can be used to provide a robust inference of the parameters $(h, \omega_{\rm c})$ in the redshift range under consideration, with comparable constraining power. We additionally determine the range of validity of the EFTofLSS model in terms of scale cuts and model degrees of freedom. From these tests, it emerges that the standard third-order Eulerian bias expansion can accurately describe the full shape of the real-space galaxy power spectrum up to the maximum wavenumber $k_{\rm max}=0.45\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, even with a measurement precision well below the percent level. In particular, this is true for a configuration with six free nuisance parameters, including local and non-local bias parameters, a matter counterterm, and a correction to the shot-noise contribution. Fixing either tidal bias parameters to physically-motivated relations still leads to unbiased cosmological constraints. We finally repeat our analysis assuming a volume that matches the expected footprint of Euclid, but without considering observational effects, as purity and completeness, showing that we can get consistent cosmological constraints over this range of scales and redshifts., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to Einstein's general relativity at cosmic scales. We focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller non-linear scales. We considered three specific models, namely JBD, a scalar-tensor theory with a flat potential, the nDGP gravity, a braneworld model in which our Universe is a four-dimensional brane embedded in a five-dimensional Minkowski space-time, and $k$-mouflage (KM) gravity, an extension of $k$-essence scenarios with a universal coupling of the scalar field to matter. In preparation for real data, we provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the additional parameters of the models, respectively, $\omega_{\rm BD}$, $\Omega_{\rm rc}$ and $\epsilon_{2,0}$. The forecast analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GCph), spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GCsp) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GCph and WL. In an optimistic setting at 68.3\% confidence interval, we find the following percentage relative errors with Euclid alone: for $\log_{10}{\omega_{\rm BD}}$, with a fiducial value of $\omega_{\rm BD}=800$, 27.1\% using GCsp alone, 3.6\% using GCph+WL+XC and 3.2\% using GCph+WL+XC+GCsp; for $\log_{10}{\Omega_{\rm rc}}$, with a fiducial value of $\Omega_{\rm rc}=0.25$, we find 93.4\%, 20\% and 15\% respectively; and finally, for $\epsilon_{2,0}=-0.04$, we find 3.4\%, 0.15\%, and 0.14\%. Abstract

We investigate the cosmological constraints that can be expected from measurement of the cross-correlation of galaxies with cosmic voids identified in the Euclid spectroscopic survey, which will include spectroscopic information for tens of millions of galaxies over $15\,000$ deg$^2$ of the sky in the redshift range $0.9\leq z<1.8$. We do this using simulated measurements obtained from the Flagship mock catalogue, the official Euclid mock that closely matches the expected properties of the spectroscopic data set. To mitigate anisotropic selection-bias effects, we use a velocity field reconstruction method to remove large-scale redshift-space distortions from the galaxy field before void-finding. This allows us to accurately model contributions to the observed anisotropy of the cross-correlation function arising from galaxy velocities around voids as well as from the Alcock-Paczynski effect, and we study the dependence of constraints on the efficiency of reconstruction. We find that Euclid voids will be able to constrain the ratio of the transverse comoving distance $D_{\rm M}$ and Hubble distance $D_{\rm H}$ to a relative precision of about $0.3\%$, and the growth rate $f\sigma_8$ to a precision of between $5\%$ and $8\%$ in each of four redshift bins covering the full redshift range. In the standard cosmological model, this translates to a statistical uncertainty $\Delta\Omega_\mathrm{m}=\pm0.0028$ on the matter density parameter from voids, better than can be achieved from either Euclid galaxy clustering and weak lensing individually. Abstract

The Euclid satellite, to be launched by ESA in 2022, will be a major instrument for cosmology for the next decades. \Euclid\ is composed of two instruments: the Visible (VIS) instrument and the Near Infrared Spectromete and Photometer (NISP). In this work we estimate the implications of correlated readout noise in the NISP detectors for the final in-flight flux measurements. Considering the multiple accumulated (MACC) readout mode, for which the UTR (Up The Ramp) exposure frames are averaged in groups, we derive an analytical expression for the noise covariance matrix between groups in the presence of correlated noise. We also characterize the correlated readout noise properties in the NISP engineering grade detectors using long dark integrations. For this purpose, we assume a $(1/f)^{\, \alpha}$-like noise model and fit the model parameters to the data, obtaining typical values of $\sigma = 19.7^{+1.1}_{-0.8}$ e$^{-} \rm{Hz}^{-0.5}$, $f_{\rm{knee}} = (5.2^{+1.8}_{-1.3}) \times 10^{-3} \, \rm{Hz}$ and $\alpha = 1.24 ^{+0.26}_{-0.21}$. Furthermore, via realistic simulations and using a maximum likelihood flux estimator we derive the bias between the input flux and the recovered one. We find that using our analytical expression for the covariance matrix of the correlated readout noise we diminish this bias by up to a factor of four with respect to the white noise approximation for the covariance matrix. Finally, we conclude that the final bias on the in-flight NISP flux measurements should still be negligible even in the white noise approximation, which is taken as a baseline for the Euclid\on-board processing

Abstract

The Copernican principle, the notion that we are not at a special location in the Universe, is one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology and its violation would invalidate the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric, causing a major change in our understanding of the Universe. Thus, it is of fundamental importance to perform observational tests of this principle. We determine the precision with which future surveys will be able to test the Copernican principle and their ability to detect any possible violations. We forecast constraints on the inhomogeneous Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ ($\Lambda$LTB), basically a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, but endowed with a spherical inhomogeneity. We consider combinations of currently available data and simulated Euclid data, together with external data products, based on both $\Lambda$CDM and $\Lambda$LTB fiducial models. These constraints are compared to the expectations from the Copernican principle. When considering the $\Lambda$CDM fiducial model, we find that Euclid data, in combination with other current and forthcoming surveys, will improve the constraints on the Copernican principle by about $30\%$, with $\pm10\%$ variations depending on the observables and scales considered. On the other hand, when considering a $\Lambda$LTB fiducial model, we find that future Euclid data, combined with other current and forthcoming data sets, will be able to detect Gpc-scale inhomogeneities of contrast $-0.1$. Abstract

Context. The ESA Euclid space telescope could observe up to 150 000 asteroids as a side product of its primary cosmological mission. Asteroids appear as trailed sources, that is streaks, in the images. Owing to the survey area of 15 000 square degrees and the number of sources, automated methods have to be used to find them. Euclid is equipped with a visible camera, VIS (VISual imager), and a near-infrared camera, NISP (Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer), with three filters. Aims. We aim to develop a pipeline to detect fast-moving objects in Euclid images, with both high completeness and high purity. Methods. We tested the StreakDet software to find asteroids from simulated Euclid images. We optimized the parameters of StreakDet to maximize completeness, and developed a post-processing algorithm to improve the purity of the sample of detected sources by removing false-positive detections. Results.StreakDet finds 96.9% of the synthetic asteroid streaks with apparent magnitudes brighter than 23rd magnitude and streak lengths longer than 15 pixels (10 arcsec h−1), but this comes at the cost of finding a high number of false positives. The number of false positives can be radically reduced with multi-streak analysis, which utilizes all four dithers obtained by Euclid. Conclusions.StreakDet is a good tool for identifying asteroids in Euclid images, but there is still room for improvement, in particular, for finding short (less than 13 pixels, corresponding to 8 arcsec h−1) and/or faint streaks (fainter than the apparent magnitude of 23). Abstract

In modern weak-lensing surveys, the common approach to correct for residual systematic biases in the shear is to calibrate shape measurement algorithms using simulations. These simulations must fully capture the complexity of the observations to avoid introducing any additional bias. In this paper we study the importance of faint galaxies below the observational detection limit of a survey. We simulate simplified Euclid VIS images including and excluding this faint population, and measure the shift in the multiplicative shear bias between the two sets of simulations. We measure the shear with three different algorithms: a moment-based approach, model fitting, and machine learning. We find that for all methods, a spatially uniform random distribution of faint galaxies introduces a shear multiplicative bias of the order of a few times 10−3. This value increases to the order of 10−2 when including the clustering of the faint galaxies, as measured in the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra-Deep Field. The magnification of the faint background galaxies due to the brighter galaxies along the line of sight is found to have a negligible impact on the multiplicative bias. We conclude that the undetected galaxies must be included in the calibration simulations with proper clustering properties down to magnitude 28 in order to reach a residual uncertainty on the multiplicative shear bias calibration of a few times 10−4, in line with the 2 × 10−3 total accuracy budget required by the scientific objectives of the Euclid survey. Abstract

We have investigated the atomic layer deposition (ALD) on SiO2 and III-V (i.e., In0.53Ga0.47As) substrates of Al-doped ZrO2 (Al-ZrO2) films. The aim is to benefit from trimethylaluminum-based chemistry as adopted in the ALD of Al2O3 while concomitantly obtaining an improvement in the value of the dielectric constant of the gate stack. An in situ monitoring of the process with spectroscopic ellipsometry was carried out in order to address the formation of the first few monolayers of the films. The correlation with the structural and chemical characterization provides insights about the interface composition upon ALD. A k value of 19 ± 2 is demonstrated for Al-ZrO2 films deposited on SiO2. The electrical performances of capacitors fabricated on In0.53Ga0.47As including Al-ZrO2 as gate dielectric exhibit encouraging properties compared to those acquired for Al2O3. However, a further optimization of the interface reactivity in order to prevent the formation of undesired In, Ga and As oxidized species appears still needed for the combination of the Al2O3 and ZrO2 ALD processes. 21. Cubic/Tetragonal Phase Stabilization in High-κ ZrO2 Thin Films Grown Using O3-Based Atomic Layer Deposition.

Abstract

Among the widespread range of applications in which ZrO2 thin films are of interest, they are receiving a peculiar consideration as candidate replacement material in innovative microelectronic devices, such as non volatile memories. In this work, we deposited ZrO2 films on Si (100) substrates by atomic layer deposition at 300°C from (MeCp)2ZrMe(OMe) as Zr precursor and using, H2O or O3 as oxygen source. After deposition films were subjected to rapid thermal annealing at 800°C for 60 s in N2. Film thickness is calculated from X-ray reflectivity to be in the 5-60 nm range. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveals that the film crystallographic phase is highly influenced by the oxidizing agent used during the deposition process. While the use of H2O gives films consisting of mixed phases, the monoclinic phase is almost absent in films deposited employing O3, which stabilize in the ZrO2 cubic/tetragonal phases. Upon annealing, the films retain their crystallographic structure, despite a marginal increment of the monoclinic phase. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiles evidence film uniformity and thermal stability. The evolution of electrical properties of ZrO2 films is discussed as a function of oxygen precursor and thermal treatment. The measured dielectric constant values after 800°C annealing are κ∼24 and κ∼30 in the films deposited using H2O or O3 respectively, in agreement with the different crystallographic phases in the ZrO2 films. Abstract

In the view of improving standard TANOS stacks, a possible route is the replacement of Al2O3 blocking oxide with materials with higher dielectric constant κ, as this would increase the electric field across the tunnel oxide. A possible solution is to integrate rare earth scandates. Among the scandates, DyScO3 appears as an attractive material due to the reported high-κ value. Films with 10-30 nm nominal thickness were grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on Si substrates for process optimization and structural characterization. Sc(thd)3 and Dy(thd)3 were used as Sc and Dy precursors and O3 as oxidizing agent. First, Sc2O3 and Dy2O3 growth process was optimized by changing growth temperature (Tg) and ALD cycle. The best conditions for the deposition of the ternary DyScO films were found to be Tg=350 °C and Dy:Sc=1:1 pulsing ratio. Optimized films were also grown on Si-rich SiN for integration as blocking oxide. After deposition, films were subjected to rapid thermal annealing up to 1030 °C to check their thermal stability. Film thickness was checked by x-ray reflectivity, together with roughness and electron density. Film crystallinity was investigated by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Film uniformity and thermal stability were explored by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) depth profiles. Dielectric constant κ was extracted from capacitance-voltage (C-V) electrical measurements. As deposited amorphous DyScO films on silicon remain amorphous after annealing up to 900 °C. Film electron density reduces while thickness increases with annealing, surface roughness remaining at ∼1.5 nm. The measured Sc:Dy atomic ratio by total x-ray fluorescence analyses is 1.33 in the as deposited film. ToF-SIMS depth profiles showed that film uniformity and composition is not preserved at 900 °C, in films deposited on Si, as major Si diffusion affects the ternary oxide. Only at 600 °C the diffusion phenomena and film composition are preserved. The extracted DyScO dielectric constant is κ∼20 in films annealed at 600 °C on Si. When deposited on Si-rich SiN, DyScO uniformity remains well preserved up to 900 °C, with an improvement of the thermal stability with respect to deposition on Si. Abstract

Dysprosium scandate DyScOx with a κ value of ∼20 has been investigated as blocking dielectric in charge trapping memory capacitors. DyScOx films with 28 and 18 nm thicknesses are deposited by atomic layer deposition on two different kinds of silicon nitride used as charge trapping layer, while SiO2 is used as tunnel oxide and TaN is used as metal gate. Memory capacitors with Al2O3 as blocking layer with similar equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) to DyScOx are also characterized as benchmarks. DyScOx thermal stability on both Si3N4 and Si-rich SiN at annealing temperatures up to 900 °C demonstrates the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor process compatibility of the oxide. Especially when deposited on Si-rich SiN, comparable program and slightly better retention performance with Al2O3 are observed for DyScOx, whereas erase still needs to be improved. Some variations in the electrical performance are found between the DyScOx-based stacks with different charge trapping layer and have been discussed. Scaling the total stack EOT by reducing DyScOx thickness from 28 to 18 nm allows a large program/erase window, but with the penalty of an increased charge loss during retention. A newly developed 'implantation machine' was used to accelerate ions. Recently, the ability of composite materials containing silicon nanocrystals in SiO2 to emit in the visible region has become very attractive due to their potential applications. It has been studied that nanocrystals can be fabricated by a variety of methods, including even the ion implantation treatment followed by high-temperature annealing. We developed a laser ablation-induced plasma as ion source, which consists in an excimer laser of 248 nm and 20 ns. The success of the developed device was reached inserting a removable expansion chamber that allowed an initial free expansion of the plasma before the ion extraction reducing the probability of arcs during the acceleration. The target support is a stem mounted on an insulating flange and kept to positive high voltage. Abstract

Al-doped ZrO2 (Al-ZrO2) films deposited by atomic layer deposition onto silicon substrates and the interface with the TaN metal gate are investigated. In particular, structural properties of as-grown and annealed films in the 6-26 nm thickness range, as well as leakage and capacitive behavior of metal-oxide-semiconductor stacks are characterized. As-deposited Al-ZrO2 films in the mentioned thickness range are amorphous and crystallize in the ZrO2 cubic phase after thermal treatment at 900 °C. Correspondingly, the dielectric constant (k) value increases from 20 ± 1 to 27 ± 2. The Al-ZrO2 layers exhibit uniform composition through the film thickness and are thermally stable on Si, whereas chemical reactions take place at the TaN/Al-ZrO2 interface. A transient capacitance technique is adopted for monitoring charge trapping and flat band instability at short and long time scales. The role of traps nearby the TaN/Al-ZrO2 interface is discussed and compared with other metal/high-k oxide films. Further, analytical modeling of the flat band voltage shift with a power-law dependence on time allows extracting features of bulk traps close to the silicon/oxide interface, which exhibit energy levels in the 1.4-1.9 eV range above the valence band of the Al-ZrO2. Abstract

Background: Data on the potential efficacy of acupuncture (AC) in controlling intense or very intense pain in patients with Herpes Zoster (HZ) has not been so far adequately assessed in comparison with standard pharmacological treatment (ST) by a controlled trial design. Methods: Within the VZV Pescara study, pain was assessed in HZ patients on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and by the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) both at the beginning and at the end of treatment. Response rates, mean changes in pain intensity, differences in total pain burden with an area-under-the-curve (AUC) method over a 1-year follow-up and differences in the incidence of Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) were evaluated. Results: One hundred and two patients were randomized to receive either AC (n = 52) or ST (n = 50) for 4 weeks. Groups were comparable regarding age, sex, pain intensity at presentation and missed antiviral prescription. Both interventions were largely effective. No significant differences were observed in response rates (81.6 % vs 89.2 %, p = 0.8), mean reduction of VAS (4.1 +/−2.3 vs 4.9 +/−1.9, p = 0.12) and MPQ scores (1.3 +/-0.9 vs 1.3 +/-0.9, p = 0.9), incidence of PHN after 3 months (48.4 % vs 46.8 %, p = 0.5), and mean AUC during follow-up (199 +/-136 vs 173 +/-141, p = 0.4). No serious treatment-related adverse event was observed in both groups. Conclusions: This controlled and randomized trial provides the first evidence of a potential role of AC for the treatment of acute herpetic pain Beschreibung: Es handelt sich bei der vorliegenden Arbeit um eine nicht-verblindete, randomisierte klinische Studie, welche den Einfluss der Akupunktur auf die Schmerzentwicklung bei einer Herpes-Zoster(HZ)-Infektion im Vergleich zu einer medikamentösen Standardtherapie (ST) untersucht []. Sie wurde als Teil einer Multicenterstudie zur Identifizierung von Risikofaktoren für eine post-herpetische Neuralgie durchgeführt []. Als Hauptzielparameter dieser Untersuchung wurde die Reduktion der Schmerzintensität (VAS) nach einer vierwöchigen Behandlungsphase definiert. Sekundäre Zielparameter waren die Responderrate (VAS-Score Reduktion während der Behandlung um mindestens zwei Punkte), die Reduktion der Schmerzintensität nach Behandlung gemessen anhand des McGill Schmerzfragebogens, die Inzidenz einer post-herpetischen Neuralgie (Schmerz im betroffenen Areal drei Monate nach Studieneinschluss), die gesamte Schmerzbelastung während eines einjährigen Follow-ups (Flächeninhalt unter der Kurve bei einer Auftragung der VAS-Scores über die Zeit) sowie das Auftreten schwerer unerwünschter Ereignisse während der Behandlung. Für keine dieser Größen wurde ein signifikanter Unterschied zwischen den Studiengruppen festgestellt. Abstract

The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2±0.1  fm s-2/-Hz√, or (0.54±0.01)×10-15  g/-Hz√, with g the standard gravity, for frequencies between 0.7 and 20 mHz. This value is lower than the LISA Pathfinder requirement by more than a factor 5 and within a factor 1.25 of the requirement for the LISA mission, and is compatible with Brownian noise from viscous damping due to the residual gas surrounding the test masses. Above 60 mHz the acceleration noise is dominated by interferometer displacement readout noise at a level of (34.8±0.3)  fm/-Hz√, about 2 orders of magnitude better than requirements. At f≤0.5  mHz we observe a low-frequency tail that stays below 12  fm s-2/-Hz√ down to 0.1 mHz. This performance would allow for a space-based gravitational wave observatory with a sensitivity close to what was originally foreseen for LISA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the view of improving standard TANOS stacks, a possible route is the replacement of Al(2)O(3) blocking oxide with materials with higher dielectric constant kappa, as this would increase the electric field across the tunnel oxide. A possible solution is to integrate rare earth scandates. Among the scandates, DyScO(3) appears as an attractive material due to the reported high-kappa value. Films with 10-30 nm nominal thickness were grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on Si substrates for process optimization and structural characterization. Sc(thd)(3) and Dy(thd)(3) were used as Sc and Dy precursors and O(3) as oxidizing agent. First, Sc(2)O(3) and Dy(2)O(3) growth process was optimized by changing growth temperature (T(g)) and ALD cycle. The best conditions for the deposition of the ternary DyScO films were found to be T(g)=350 degrees C and Dy: Sc=1 : 1 pulsing ratio. Optimized films were also grown on Si-rich SiN for integration as blocking oxide. After deposition, films were subjected to rapid thermal annealing up to 1030 degrees C to check their thermal stability. Film thickness was checked by x-ray reflectivity, together with roughness and electron density. Film crystallinity was investigated by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Film uniformity and thermal stability were explored by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) depth profiles. Dielectric constant kappa was extracted from capacitance-voltage (C-V) electrical measurements. As deposited amorphous DyScO films on silicon remain amorphous after annealing up to 900 degrees C. Film electron density reduces while thickness increases with annealing, surface roughness remaining at similar to 1.5 nm. The measured Sc: Dy atomic ratio by total x-ray fluorescence analyses is 1.33 in the as deposited film. ToF-SIMS depth profiles showed that film uniformity and composition is not preserved at 900 degrees C, in films deposited on Si, as major Si diffusion affects the ternary oxide. Only at 600 degrees C the diffusion phenomena and film composition are preserved. The extracted DyScO dielectric constant is kappa similar to 20 in films annealed at 600 degrees C on Si. When deposited on Si-rich SiN, DyScO uniformity remains well preserved up to 900 degrees C, with an improvement of the thermal stability with respect to deposition on Si. Si diffusion is evident at 1030 degrees C only. The kappa-value extracted from C-V resulted to be kappa similar to 20.
