Abstract

Ultrathin passive films effectively prevent the chemical attack of stainless steel grades in corrosive environments; their stability critically depends on the interplay between structure and chemistry of the constituents Fe-Cr-Mo. In particular, nanoscale inhomogeneities along the surface can have a tremendous impact on material failure, but are yet barely understood. Addressing a stainless-type glass-forming Fe50Cr15Mo14C15B6 alloy and utilizing a combination of complementary high-resolution analytical techniques, we relate near-atomistic insight into different gradual nanostructures with time- and element-resolved dissolution behavior. The progressive elemental segregation on the nanoscale is followed in its influence on the concomitant degree of passivity. A detrimental transition from Cr-controlled passivity to Mo-controlled breakdown is dissected atom-by-atom demonstrating the importance of nanoscale knowledge for understanding corrosion.

Abstract

Context. Magnification bias, an observational effect of gravitational lensing in the weak regime, allows the cosmological model to be tested through angular correlations of sources at different redshifts. This effect has been observed in various contexts, particularly with sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs), offering valuable astrophysical and cosmological insights. Aims. The study aims to investigate the magnification bias effect exerted by galaxy clusters on SMGs and its implications for astrophysical and cosmological parameters within the Λ-CDM model. Methods. Magnification bias was explored by quantifying the cross-correlation function, which we then utilised to derive constraints on cosmological and astrophysical parameters with a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Two distinct galaxy cluster samples were used to assess result robustness and understand the influence of sample characteristics. Results. Cluster samples show higher cross-correlation values than galaxies, with an excess at larger scales suggesting contributions from additional large-scale structures. The parameters obtained, while consistent with those of galaxies, are less constrained due to broader redshift distributions and limited cluster statistics. Results align with weak lensing studies, hinting at slightly lower σ8 and Ωm values than Planck's cosmic microwave background data, emphasising the need for enhanced precision and alternative low-redshift universe tests. Conclusions. While this method yields constraints that are compatible with the Λ-CDM model, its limitations include broader redshift distributions and a limited number of lenses, resulting in less constrained parameters compared to previous galaxy studies. Nonetheless, our study underscores the potential of using galaxy clusters as lenses for magnification bias studies, capitalising on their elevated masses and thus providing a promising avenue to test current cosmology theories. Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la capacidad de dos especies de macrofitas, Lemna minor y Eichhornia crassipes, para eliminar el níquel. Se realizaron cuatro tratamientos durante dos semanas para cada una de las especies. Las plantas fueron incubadas con 0, 1, 3 y 6 mg l-1 de Ni. Ambas especies mostraron, en todos los tratamientos con Ni, una reducción en la concentración a lo largo del tiempo. L. minor mostró ser más eficiente para remover este ión a la más baja concentración. Sin embargo, en concentraciones más elevadas no se observaron diferencias entre ambas especies. El análisis del tejido de las plantas mostró que las mismas acumulaban el metal, en los tres casos evaluados con concentraciones diferentes.Palabras clave: fitorremediación, metales pesados, plantas acuáticas, acumulación.

Abstract

Working memory (WM) is a crucial cognitive process and its disruption is among the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. While alterations of the neuronal processes underlying WM have been evidenced in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), scarce literature is available in subjective cognitive decline (SCD). We used magnetoencephalography during a WM task performed by MCI (n = 4 5) , SCD (n = 4 9) and healthy elders (n = 4 9) to examine group differences during the maintenance period (0–4000 ms). Data were analyzed using time–frequency analysis and significant oscillatory differences were localized at the source level. Our results indicated significant differences between groups, mainly during the early maintenance (250–1250 ms) in the theta, alpha and beta bands and in the late maintenance (2750–3750 ms) in the theta band. MCI showed lower local synchronization in fronto-temporal cortical regions in the early theta–alpha window relative to controls (p = 2 × 1 0 − 0 3) and SCD (p = 4 × 1 0 − 0 3) , and in the late theta window relative to controls (p = 1 × 1 0 0 3) and SCD (p = 0. 0 1). Early theta–alpha power was significantly correlated with memory scores (rho = 0. 2 4 , p = 0. 0 2) and late theta power was correlated with task performance (rho = 0. 2 4 , p = 0. 0 3) and functional activity scores (rho = − 0. 2 3 , p = 0. 0 2). In the early beta window, MCI showed reduced power in temporo-posterior regions relative to controls (p = 3 × 1 0 − 0 3) and SCD (p = 0. 0 2).
