Purpose: To evaluate the dimensional changes in the alveolar crest after buccal overbuilding was performed prior to tooth extraction in a dog model. Materials and Methods: At the test sites, alveolar crest overbuilding was performed on the buccal aspect of the distal root of the third premolar using xenograft covered with a collagen membrane. No treatment was applied at the control sites. After 3 months, the distal roots of both third premolars were extracted and implants were immediately placed into the alveolus, allowing nonsubmerged healing. After 3 months, biopsy samples were collected. Results: Upon histologic analysis, no statistically significant differences in hard tissue dimensions were found. The buccal bone plate at the test sites presented a tendency for higher resorption compared to the control sites. However, if the contribution of the residue of biomaterial is considered, a higher volumetric gain was registered at the test than at the control sites. Conclusions: The buccal overbuilding performed prior to tooth extraction did not contribute to the preservation of the alveolar crest dimensions after extraction. This canine in vivo study assessed the effect of recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF) on the healing of periapical tissues following apical surgery. From a total of 96 premolar teeth, 64 teeth from six beagle dogs (2 years old) were classified as experimental and were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (16 teeth per group). After having the pulp extirpated, leaving teeth open to the oral cavity for 1 week, and sealing with an immediate restorative material for 8 weeks, nonsurgical endodontic treatment was performed. A split-mouth design was used, and intra-animal randomization of treatment sides was applied to the groups as follows: apical curettage + 1.5-mm root-end resection (Group 1); apicoectomy + mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) root-end filling (Group 2); apicoectomy + MTA root-end filling + rhPDGF (Group 3); and apical curettage + rhPDGF (Group 4). The animals were sacrificed 24 months after apical surgery, and histologic and µCT analyses were performed for bone volume loss (BVL). Group 1 showed partial resolution of the periapical lesions without signs of tissue regeneration (BVL: 49.09 ± 10.97 mm3). Group 2 had minimal bone regeneration and showed cementum reformation in 9 teeth, with no direct attachment to the MTA (BVL: 35.34 ± 10.97 mm3). Group 3 showed regeneration of all damaged apical tissues without direct contact between the cementum and MTA (BLV: 4.51 ± 1.55 mm3). Group 4 showed regeneration of PDL, bone, and cementum and attachment of functional cementum fibers (BVL: 2.82 ± 2.3 mm3). Purpose: To compare bone substitutes composed of glycated collagen with synthetic micro-sized (1 to 10 µm) hydroxyapatite (OB) vs non-cross-linked collagen matrix with large-particle (250 to 1,000 µm) bovine-derived hydroxyapatite (BOC). Materials and Methods: The P1 to P4 premolars were bilaterally extracted from the mandibles of 19 Beagle dogs. After 21 days, osteotomies were created in each dog that received OB or BOC and were covered with a collagen membrane or were left untreated. The animals were randomly divided into three groups based on sacrifice time (4, 12, or 24 weeks). The right and left hemimandibles were trimmed to facilitate imaging and histology, and all tissues were placed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin. Microcomputed tomography (MicroCT 40 Scanner, Scanco) was used to analyze bone sections. Bone volume, residual material volume, and bone mineral density were determined for each treatment site (OB and BOC) based on a volume of interest that encompassed the original defect. Additionally, blinded histopathologic assessment (based on the ISO 10993-6 scoring system) and histomorphometry were performed on sections ground to < 100 µm thick and stained with Stevenel's blue. Results: No clinical side effects were noted. No statistical differences were observed for OB vs BOC regarding the mineral volume percentage. Compared to OB, BOC had significantly higher mean mineralization densities at 12 weeks (P < .01), but this difference did not extend to 24 weeks. For residual grafting material, bone maturation, alveolar ridge restoration, and inflammatory response, OB showed a residual amount of bone graft and no statistical differences compared to BOC. Conclusion: Both OB and BOC represent valid treatment options for critically sized bone defects. Developing a deep understanding of the fascinating properties of MFM-300 (MFM = Manchester framework material) opens up a world of new and thrilling applications. The unique dynamic metal–ligand bonding for MFM-300(Sc) and MFM-300(In) is chronologically presented here, highlighting the exacting applications that were associated with such special behaviour (i.e., description of complex NH3 adsorption mechanisms, conversion of toxic H2S to polysulfides for promising fabrication of lithium–sulphur batteries and heterogeneous catalysis). This highlight aims to showcase the current advances in semi-open metal sites inherent to MFM-300(Sc) and MFM-300(In) to inspire new investigations to be carried out to develop new applications of this promising family of MOF materials. Introduction Methods Results Conclusions The objective of this study was to describe the clinical features, treatments and outcomes of dogs with iron ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) molluscicide ingestion. We aimed to identify potential predictors of serum iron concentration >54 μmol/L; a cut‐off recommended for initiating treatment of human iron toxicosis.Medical records across four veterinary hospitals (2013–2019) for dogs with known or suspected iron EDTA molluscicide ingestion were reviewed for signalment, clinical signs, clinicopathological data, treatment regimens and outcomes. Clinical signs of dogs with serum iron concentrations either below or above a cut‐off of 54 μmol/L were compared using Fisher's exact test. Association between serum iron and urine discolouration was tested using logistic regression.Seventy‐three dogs were included. The most frequent characteristic was abnormal faeces (n = 47, 64%) as determined by rectal examination, with more dogs that had serum iron >54 μmol/L showing this clinical sign (24/35), compared to dogs with serum iron <54 μmol/L (4/13) (P = 0.025). Clinicopathologic abnormalities included increased base excess (n = 20/49, 20%), hyperglycaemia (n = 13/57, 23%) and hyperlactataemia (n = 12/57, 21%). Fifty‐four dogs received deferoxamine chelation (74%), during which 25/42 (60%) dogs had discoloured urine despite all dogs having subsequent iron concentrations <54 μmol/L. Admission serum iron concentration was associated with urine discolouration during hospitalisation (odds ratio 1.046, 95% confidence interval 1.008–1.107, P = 0.011). Sixty‐nine dogs (95%) survived to discharge, with 10 dogs (14%) transferred to another veterinarian.Iron EDTA molluscicide ingestion caused predominantly gastrointestinal clinical signs, and abnormal faeces, as well as urine discolouration during chelation therapy, which may indicate an elevation of serum iron concentration on presentation. Background: Dirofilaria sp. "hongkongensis" is a putative Dirofilaria species, initially identified in subcutaneous nodules in humans in Hong Kong and in other South and Southeast Asian regions. While it differs genetically from the better-known zoonotic species, Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis, information on the lesions caused by Dirofilaria sp. "hongkongensis" in the hosts as well as on its biology is scarce. This study documents for the first time the presence of this filarioid nematode in subcutaneous nodules in dogs and cats in Hong Kong, where it was originally described in human patients, therefore providing evidence for the zoonotic nature of this parasite. Methods: Records of Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of City University of Hong Kong were searched between 2019 and 2024 for histological reports of possible filarioid-associated lesions. Tissue samples were collected by excisional surgical biopsy and processed with routine paraffin techniques. Selected slides were stained using various staining techniques [i.e., hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid–Schiff (PAS), Grocott methenamine silver (GMS) or Ziehl–Neelsen (ZN) and Gram stain]. DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue were extracted, submitted to conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) and sequencing (i.e., cox1 and 12S rRNA genes) and phylogenetic analyzed. Results: A total of five subcutaneous nodules from four cats and one from a dog with histopathology suggestive of filariosis were selected. The presence of Dirofilaria sp. "hongkongensis" was morphologically and molecularly confirmed in one dog and one cat. Both histopathological presentation and phylogenetic analysis enabled classification of this species close to D. repens and within the subgenus Nochtiella. In the remaining three cases, one showed histological evidence of aberrant nematode migration, while non-parasitic causes were identified in the other two. Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence of Dirofilaria sp. "hongkongensis" in subcutaneous nodules in cats and dogs. The histology of clinical lesions of this filarioid species herein described is closely related to those caused by D. repens. Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic disease caused by Leishmania infantum and transmitted by the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Dogs are the major domestic reservoir of L. infantum. To prevent the spread of the disease, dog collars impregnated with 4% deltamethrin have been effectively used in VL endemic areas. However, this approach may contribute to the emergence of insecticide resistance in sand flies. Therefore, it is important to characterize the susceptibility of different populations of Lu. longipalpis to deltamethrin in areas where insecticide-impregnated dog collars are used. Methods: Six field sand fly populations from Brazil were exposed to deltamethrin in CDC bottle bioassays at the diagnostic doses (DD) of 21.9 μg/bottle and 30 μg/bottle. For the dose–response (DR) experiments, doses of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 μg/bottle of deltamethrin were used to impregnate bottles; control group bottles were impregnated with acetone only. Each bottle contained an average of 20 sand flies, both male and female, and they were exposed to either deltamethrin or acetone for 60 min. Results: Based on the DD of 21.9 μg/bottle, three populations were susceptible to deltamethrin. In contrast, two populations collected from the states of Ceará and Minas Gerais exhibited mortality rates of 94.9% and 95.7%, indicating possible resistance, and one population from the state of Ceará showed resistance, with a mortality rate of 87.1%. At the DD of 30 μg/bottle, two populations from the states of Ceará and Piauí showed possible resistance, while the other four populations were susceptible. The resistance ratio (RR50) ranged from 2.27 to 0.54, and RR95 ranged from 4.18 to 0.33, indicating a low resistance intensity. Conclusions: This study established a DD for Lu. longipalpis using the CDC bottle bioassay. We found that Lu. longipalpis populations in three Brazilian states where insecticide-impregnated dog collars were used for VL control were susceptible to deltamethrin. However, one population in Ceará State was classified as resistant to deltamethrin. These results contribute to the current knowledge on sand fly resistance and surveillance, and highlight the need for a better understanding of the resistance mechanisms of Lu. longipalpis in areas where insecticide-impregnated dog collars have been widely used. ABSTRACT Levetiracetam (LEV) is an anti‐epileptic drug used extra‐label in dogs. Commercially available extended‐release formulations (LEV‐ER), administered twice daily, cannot be crushed or split, limiting their use in small dogs. A compounded LEV‐ER formulation (PO‐COMP) can purportedly be partitioned without loss of extended‐release properties. The aims of this study were to establish the pharmacokinetic parameters of PO‐COMP, divided at the tablet score, and determine the bioequivalence of partitioned PO‐COMP to an intact commercially available Food and Drug Administration‐approved human oral generic formulation of LEV‐ER (PO‐COMM). In a randomized crossover design, 12 healthy dogs received a single IV dose (30 mg/kg) of IV‐COMM, a single oral dose (500 mg) of intact PO‐COMM, or a single oral dose (500 mg) of partitioned PO‐COMP and underwent serial measurement of plasma LEV concentrations over 24 h. PO‐COMP was bioequivalent to PO‐COMM using the 90% confidence interval method for maximum concentration (−3.2% difference [CI −7.4% to −1.1%]) and area under the curve (−14.4% difference [CI −17.8% to 10.8%]). PO‐COMP may improve medication adherence and seizure control relative to immediate‐release LEV, which requires three times daily dosing. Efficacy studies of PO‐COMP are warranted. Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Spontaneous, idiopathic HTG is common in the Miniature Schnauzer dog and presumed to have a strong genetic influence in this breed. To define genes that are differentially expressed in dogs with HTG, we performed RNA sequencing on peripheral blood of 13 Miniature Schnauzers with HTG and 18 controls. We identified 110 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Pathway analysis suggests an ongoing pro-thrombotic, endothelial activation process in dogs with HTG. The gene with the largest fold change (5.4 ± 1.4, Padj = 4.4E-04), SERPINE1, encodes plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), a known risk factor for atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Other top DEGs, including SHANK3, MMRN1, and FZD7, are involved in endothelial activation. Two of the top DEGs, ARHGAP29 and ARHGAP21, inhibit pro-thrombotic pathways and are potentially protective of disease sequelae. Top DEGs, including SERPINE1 and ARHGAP21, have also been linked to metabolic syndrome or its features (e.g. insulin resistance) in humans and animal models. Our findings indicate that HTG in the Miniature Schnauzer dog has similar features to HTG and metabolic syndrome in humans, highlighting the potential use of the dog as a spontaneous model for further research into the etiology and effects of HTG. Background Objective Animals Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Knowledge about primary hypoadrenocorticism coexisting with immune‐mediated thyroiditis (Schmidt's syndrome) in dogs is limited.To evaluate thyroid function in dogs with naturally occurring hypoadrenocorticism before and during treatment.Sixty‐six client‐owned dogs.Measurement of canine thyroid stimulating hormone (cTSH), total thyroxine (T4), free thyroxine, and autoantibodies against thyroglobulin, T4, and total triiodothyronine.Thirty‐eight dogs were assessed before and 28 during treatment. Follow‐up data were available for 24/38 and 17/28 dogs, with median follow‐up duration of 3.8 years (range, <1.0‐8.8 years) and 4 years (range, 1.1 weeks to 10.5 years), respectively. Canine thyroid stimulating hormone was above the reference range at the time of diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism in 10 of 38 dogs but decreased into the reference range in 7 for which follow‐up data was available. Hypothyroidism was confirmed in 5 dogs at a median age of 11 years (range, 7‐15 years). In 4 dogs, the condition was diagnosed after a median treatment duration of 5.75 years (range, 2.6‐10 years), while in 1 dog, the diagnosis was made concurrently. One dog had detectable thyroid autoantibodies.Hypothyroidism occurs as a rare concurrent condition in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism, potentially at any phase of treatment. Close monitoring of cTSH levels in these dogs could be beneficial, as early changes might indicate the onset of hypothyroidism. ABSTRACT Pre‐metastatic niche (PMN) formation is essential for metastatic development and drives organotropism. Tumour‐derived extracellular vesicles and soluble factors remodel the microenvironment of distant metastatic organs before subsequent metastasis. Dogs with osteosarcoma (OS) have proven to be excellent disease models for their human companions. Here, we show evidence of PMN formation in dogs with OS before metastasis. We necropsied and sampled lung tissues from dogs with naturally occurring treatment‐naïve OS (n = 15) and control dogs without cancer (n = 10). We further divided dogs with OS into those having lung metastases (n = 5) and those without (n = 10). We stained formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded tissues using multiplex immunofluorescence to quantify the number of bone marrow‐derived cells, monocytes and macrophages in the lung samples from each dog. The numbers of CD204+ macrophages, CD206+ macrophages and monocytes and CD11d+ bone marrow‐derived cells (BMDCs) were significantly higher in the pre‐metastatic lung of dogs with OS (n = 10) than in control dogs without cancer (n = 10). Furthermore, the total nucleated cell (DAPI+) density was higher before metastasis than in healthy lungs. In dogs with established metastases, the number of CD11d+ BMDCs was significantly lower than in the pre‐metastatic lung, suggesting this recruitment is transient. Our study provides evidence of PMN existence in a naturally occurring cancer model similar to those observed in pre‐clinical murine models. Introduction: Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) is commonly used in human medicine for the management of perioperative pain in different types of procedures. However, in veterinary medicine, the use of MgSO4 has not been evaluated for its analgesic efficacy in dogs, which has generated conflicts of opinion in this area of veterinary anesthesiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perioperative analgesic efficacy of MgSO4 in combination with Ketamine in dogs undergoing Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO). Our hypothesis is that MgSO4 plus ketamine have a synergistic action in the management of intra-and postoperative pain. Methods: Twenty adult mixed breed dogs with average age 5.9 ± 2.6 years and weight 27.8 ± 9.2 kg were included in this prospective, clinical, randomized study. Dogs were randomly assigned to two groups. The MK group received ketamine (0.5 mg/kg as starting bolus followed by continuous infusion rate at 1 mg/kg/h). At the end of the ketamine bolus, MgSO4 (50 mg/kg over 15 min) was administered by the same route, followed by a constant rate infusion (CRI) at 15 mg/kg/h, IV. K group received a bolus of ketamine followed by a CRI at the same dosage described in MK group. Main cardiorespiratory parameters were recorded 10 min before the start of surgery (BASE), after the ketamine bolus (T1) and the MgSO4 bolus (T2), during the skin incision (SKIN), the osteotomy (OSTEOTOMY) and skin suturing (SUTURE). In the postoperative period, the short form of Glasgow Composite Pain scale (SF-CMPS) was used to assess pain at 30, 60, 120, and 180 min after extubation (Post30, Post60, Post120, and Post180, respectively). The main blood electrolytes (Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, K+) were analyzed at BASE, T2, OSTEOTOMY, SUTURE and T3 (one hour after stopping MgSO4 infusion). Number of rescue analgesia and administration times were recorded both in the intra-and postoperative period. Results: In K group 7 out of 10 dogs required intraoperatory rescue analgesia compared to MK group (3/10). Furthermore, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were significantly higher at OSTEOTOMY compared to BASE time in both groups. In the postoperative period, at T120, ICMPS-SF score was higher in K group than MK group. Conclusion: The administration of MgSO4 could guarantee better analgesia in the perioperative period in dogs undergoing TPLO, performing a synergistic action with ketamine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many hairy mammals perform rapid oscillations of their body, called wet dog shakes, to remove water and irritants from their back hairy skin. The somatosensory mechanisms that underlie this behavior are unclear. We report that Piezo2-dependent mechanosensation mediates wet dog shakes evoked by water or oil droplets applied to back hairy skin of mice. Unmyelinated C-fiber low-threshold mechanoreceptors (C-LTMRs) were activated by oil droplets, and their optogenetic activation elicited wet dog shakes. Ablation of C-LTMRs attenuated this behavior. Moreover, C-LTMRs synaptically couple to spinoparabrachial neurons, and optogenetically inhibiting spinoparabrachial neuron synapses and excitatory neurons in the parabrachial nucleus impaired both oil droplet– and C-LTMR–evoked wet dog shakes. Thus, a C-LTMR–spinoparabrachial pathway promotes wet dog shakes for removal of water and mechanical irritants from back hairy skin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tick control mainly depends on using chemical acaricides that have led to the emergence of resistant tick populations along with environmental hazards. Natural alternatives including essential oils are now widely used to avoid the undesirable effects of chemicals on human, animals and environment. In this study, three commercial oils (myrrh, patchouli, and cypress) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) were tested against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato unfed adults. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the nanoemulsions. Four concentrations with three replicates were used in the bioassay of oils and NEs against ticks using an adult immersion test. Furthermore, a toxicity study of the three oils and their NEs using normal fibroblast cells (BJ-1) was performed. TEM revealed particle size ranges from 29 to 211 nm with spherical droplets. The droplet size and polydispersity index were (29.30 nm & 0.367), (211.6 nm & 0.221) and (164.2 nm & 0.237) for myrrh NE, patchouli NE, and cypress NE, respectively. Myrrh and patchouli oils recorded high acaricidal activity followed by cypress oil with LC50 value 5 days after treatment of 9.01, 12.40, and 15.21%, respectively. The acaricidal efficacy of oil was potentiated in the NEs form which was proved by the reduction in LC50 values that were recorded 7 days after treatment 4.17, 8.57, and 5.04%, for myrrh, patchouli, and cypress NE, respectively. As an alternative for lab animals, we applied the cytotoxicity of myrrh, patchouli, and cypress on normal fibroblast cells. The oils showed low cytotoxic activity of 10.6, 21.5, and 23.6% for Myrrh, Patchouli, and Cypress, respectively. The nanoemulsion was revealed to be safe for normal cells up to a concentration of 0.62% (cytotoxicity%= 24.4, 34.4, and 16.3%, respectively), and the moderate cytotoxic effect appeared at around a concentration of 1.25% (cytotoxicity%= 42.2%, 57.0%, and 36.8% respectively). In conclusion, the three oils and their NEs have good acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus sanguineus unfed adults. The effort to eradicate Dracunculus medinensis, the etiologic agent of dracunculiasis, or Guinea worm disease, began at CDC in 1980. In 1986, with an estimated 3.5 million global cases in 20 African and Asian countries, the World Health Assembly called for dracunculiasis elimination. The Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP) was established to help countries with endemic dracunculiasis reach this goal. GWEP is led by The Carter Center and supported by partners, including the countries with endemic disease, CDC, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization. Since 2012, infections in dogs, cats, and baboons have posed a new challenge for GWEP, as have ongoing civil unrest and insecurity in some areas. As of June 2024, dracunculiasis remained endemic in five countries (Angola, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, and South Sudan). Fourteen human cases and 886 animal infections occurred, including 407 dogs in Chad and 248 dogs in Cameroon, reported in 2023, and three human cases and 297 animal infections reported during January–June 2024. Animal infections, primarily in dogs in Cameroon and Chad, and impeded access due to civil unrest and insecurity in Mali, threaten the nearterm possibility of global eradication. Dogs interact with humans effectively and intimately. However, the neural underpinnings for such interspecies social communication are not understood. It is known that interbrain activity coupling, i.e., the synchronization of neural activity between individuals, represents the neural basis of social interactions. Here, previously unknown cross‐species interbrain activity coupling in interacting human–dog dyads is reported. By analyzing electroencephalography signals from both dogs and humans, it is found that mutual gaze and petting induce interbrain synchronization in the frontal and parietal regions of the human–dog dyads, respectively. The strength of the synchronization increases with growing familiarity of the human–dog dyad over five days, and the information flow analysis suggests that the human is the leader while the dog is the follower during human–dog interactions. Furthermore, dogs with Shank3 mutations, which represent a promising complementary animal model of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), show a loss of interbrain coupling and reduced attention during human–dog interactions. Such abnormalities are rescued by the psychedelic lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). The results reveal previously unknown interbrain synchronizations within an interacting human–dog dyad which may underlie the interspecies communication, and suggest a potential of LSD for the amelioration of social impairment in patients with ASD. Functional analyses are used to assess maintaining variables of behavior. Despite the large amount of research on functional analyses with humans, there are limited examples with nonhumans and even fewer studies incorporating modifications to standard methods of assessment with nonhumans. One modification that has yet to be evaluated with nonhuman animals is the trial‐based functional analysis in which control and test conditions are embedded in naturalistic environments. This study compared a standard functional analysis with a trial‐based functional analysis across different topographies of problem behavior with dogs. The results of the functional analyses corresponded for every dog. Individualized treatments were designed to reduce problem behavior. Implications of the trial‐based functional analysis include feasibility for privately owned dogs and dogs under the care of shelters. The procedure of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) allograft preparation can be divided into fresh-frozen method (FF-allograft) or freeze-dried method (FD-allograft). This study aims to biomechanically and histologically compare the graft to bone tunnel integration between the two allografts. In-vitro results indicated that FF-allograft and FD-allograft showed excellent biocompatibility and biomechanics, while FD-allograft showed a denser collagen fiber arrangement than FF-allograft and autograft. Then, in-vivo preformation of the FF-allograft, FD-allograft, and autograft on bone tunnel integration was evaluated via a canine ACL reconstruction model. In-vivo results indicated that no signs of infection or osteoarthritis were shown in the femur-graft-tibia complexes, but more vascularity and synovitis formed around the implanted FF-allograft. Micro-computed tomography showed that peri-graft bone in the FF-allograft group was significantly increased and remodeled compared with the FD-allograft group; Histologically, the FF-allograft group exhibited similar graft-bone tunnel healing to the FD-allograft group. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining showed significantly more osteoclasts presented in the FD-allograft group compared to the FF-allograft group. Meanwhile, a significantly higher failure load was shown in the FF-allograft group when compared with the FD-allograft group (P < 0.05). Objective Animal studied Procedure Results Conclusions To analyze bacterial isolates associated with canine bacterial keratitis and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns in Korea, focusing on multidrug resistance (MDR) and identifying effective antibiotic combinations for clinical treatment.A total of 146 dogs diagnosed with suspected bacterial keratitis between October 2022 and October 2023 in Korea, with 157 eye samples collected for analysis.Eye samples were cultured to isolate bacteria, and antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. Bacterial identification was conducted using Matrix‐Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time‐of‐Flight (MALDI‐TOF). The study assessed the efficacy of individual antibiotics and combination therapies.Bacteria were isolated in 55.4% of the samples. The most common genera were Staphylococcus species (48.5%, 48/99), Streptococcus species (13.1%, 13/99), Pseudomonas species (9.1%, 9/99), and Escherichia coli (9.1%, 9/99). Amikacin (84.8%) showed the highest antibiotic susceptibility, while doxycycline exhibited the lowest (17.2%). The most effective antibiotic combinations were amikacin‐moxifloxacin (93%). MDR isolates accounted for 52.5% (52/99) of the total bacterial samples.Staphylococcus species were the most common isolates, with 52.5% showing MDR, underscoring the need to curb antibiotic misuse. While antibiotics like amikacin demonstrated high susceptibility rates, their use should be reserved for resistant infections to prevent further resistance development. Introduction: This study evaluated the effects of localized vibration (LV) in 37 dogs with bilateral hip dysplasia (HD). HD is a common cause of lameness in dogs, and is a contributory factor to osteoarthritis, which can reduce the dog's overall quality of life. Materials and methods: This was a multi-center, prospective survey-based study of 37 dogs with bilateral HD and no prior history of surgical management. Dogs were given LV therapy daily for 14 consecutive days using the same commercially available handheld vibration device. Canine Brief Pain Index (CBPI) data was collected prior to the initiation of therapy, then for 14 days following daily LV therapy. The dogs' medications, supplements, additional rehabilitation modalities, and activity level were unchanged during the study period. Baseline CBPI pain severity and pain interference scores were compared to scores after 7 or 14 days of LV. Results: There were significant decreases in average pain severity and average pain interference CBPI scores in response to 7 and 14 days of therapy compared to baseline. When response to therapy was defined as a decrease in both pain severity score and pain interference score, 62% (23/37) of dogs responded to therapy at 7 days of treatment and 73% (27/37) responded at 14 days of treatment. Of the individuals that responded to treatment at 7 days, 91% (21/23) continued to respond at 14 days. Conclusion: Daily LV resulted in a significant reduction in CBPI scores in 73% of dogs with bilateral HD in this study. Background: There is increasing interest in the incorporation of animal‐assisted services (AAS) in therapy for adults with acquired neurogenic communication disorders. AAS have the potential to enhance speech and language therapy engagement and outcomes. However, a greater understanding of the nature and potential benefits of these interventions is needed. Aims: To describe the existing evidence for the incorporation of AAS in therapy with adults with acquired neurogenic communication disorders and to identify areas for future research. Methods & Procedures: A scoping review was conducted and reported in alignment with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐analyses checklist extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA‐ScR). Seven databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science) and grey literature (Google) were searched. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts and full texts against eligibility criteria using Covidence software. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist guided extraction of intervention data. Main Contributions: A total of 17 studies with adults with aphasia, apraxia of speech and cognitive–communication disorders were included. While terminology varied, most interventions met the definition of animal‐assisted therapy or animal‐assisted activity and used therapy dogs. Across studies, a range of outcomes were targeted, and positive benefits were reported for participant mood, emotions, motivation and satisfaction. There were mixed, but mostly positive, benefits on social behaviour, communication and participation. Conclusions & Implications: AAS has been incorporated in therapy for adults with acquired neurogenic communication disorders, predominately with people with dementia. Across studies, communication impairments and AAS interventions were insufficiently or inconsistently described. Improved reporting would assist understanding of the potential benefits of AAS as an adjunct therapy. A quality appraisal of existing studies, and meta‐analysis of findings, is needed to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of AAS as a complementary therapy for people with acquired neurogenic communication disorders. Objective: To investigate the physical activity levels of students enrolled in a standard fitness walking class versus a service-learning dog walking class. Participants: College students (N = 65) from a university in the Southeastern United States (71% female; 85% White; 72% seniors). Methods: Students wore NL-1000 pedometers twice a week for 50 minutes for a full academic year. Service-learning students also completed reflection papers. Pedometer data was analyzed using SPSS and papers were analyzed through inductive coding. Results: Significant differences were found in each quantitative measure collected between classes. Students in the service-learning fitness walking class took more steps, walked further, and obtained more minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity than the students in the standard fitness walking class. Results from student reflections provided insight into why these differences occurred as well as additional student experiences. Oclacitinib is a novel Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that potently inhibits JAK1‐dependent cytokines involved in allergy, inflammation, and pruritus (IL‐2, IL‐4, IL‐6, IL‐13, and IL‐31). Oclacitinib (Apoquel®, Zoetis Inc, Parsippany, NJ) is approved for the treatment/control of pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis and treatment/control of clinical manifestations of atopic dermatitis in dogs at least 12 months of age. To evaluate the effectiveness of oclacitinib in dogs with flea allergy dermatitis, the JAK1 selective inhibitor was tested in a placebo‐controlled, masked, single‐dose (0.4 mg/kg) or repeat‐dose (0.4 mg/kg, twice daily for 2 weeks) study. Pruritic behaviors were quantitated by video recording, and erythema and skin lesions were assessed using a 10‐cm visual analog scale (VAS). Results showed that oclacitinib reduced pruritus by 61% as early as 1.5 h after a single oral dose compared to placebo, with an average reduction (compared to placebo) of 85% 1–5 h after dosing (0.4 mg/kg; p <.0001). Oclacitinib also significantly reduced erythema (p <.0001) and skin lesion (p <.0005) VAS scores on Day 14 compared to placebo in a repeat dose study. No adverse events were noted during the conduct of these studies. IL‐31 concentrations were elevated in the majority of dogs after flea infestation, suggesting JAK1‐dependent cytokines may drive clinical signs of flea allergy dermatitis. These findings show that oclacitinib, an inhibitor of JAK1‐dependent cytokines involved in allergy and inflammation can rapidly reduce clinical signs associated with flea allergic dermatitis in dogs. Disabled individuals can and do lead successful careers as assistance dog instructors. However, the international percentage of professional disabled instructors is significantly lower than their able-bodied colleagues. This paper takes an initial step in questioning the benefits and challenges of creating more accessible and inclusive career paths for disabled assistance dog instructors, hopefully acting as a springboard for future research, and initiating conversation within the assistance dog sector itself, as well. Some disabled individuals may have a disability, or combinations of more than one, which could challenge the welfare and wellbeing of the dogs they educate. Others may have a greater aptitude for educating assistance dogs and offering deeper empathy at times. This paper was inspired by the author's six years working as a guide dog instructor. Introduction: Dogs are among the most commonly allergenic pets for children. Data on risk factors for the development of dog allergy are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of children with dog allergy and identify predictors of symptom development with dog exposure. Methods: The study included children with dog allergen sensitization demonstrated by skin prick test (SPT) between September 1, 2019, and December 1, 2022. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected from the patients' records and interviews with parents. Results: Dog allergen sensitization was detected by SPT in 548 (5.5%) of 9,907 patients. Of these, 507 patients had complete data and were included in the analysis. The patients' median age was 11 (IQR: 8–15) years, 55.8% were male, 97.6% exhibited polysensitization (pollen 75.1%, cat 69.6%), 83.6% had allergic rhinitis, and 46.2% had asthma. Acute dog exposure caused symptoms in 164 patients (32.3%), most commonly sneezing (n = 97) and nasal symptoms (n = 80). Predictors of acute symptoms in dog-sensitized children were male sex (OR: 0.584 [CI: 0.38–0.87]), dog exposure before 1 year of age (OR: 2.35 [CI: 1.18–4.66]), close contact with a dog owner (OR: 2.93 [CI: 1.78–4.8]), and cat allergy (OR: 2.75 [CI: 1.82–4.1]). Conclusion: Approximately one-third of children with dog sensitization developed symptoms after exposure to the dog. Male sex, direct dog exposure before the age of one, close contact with a dog owner, and cat allergy were identified as predictors of dog allergy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Rotator cuff repair augmentation using biological materials has become popular in clinical practice to reduce the high retear rates associated with traditional repair techniques. Tissue engineering approaches, such as engineered tendon-fibrocartilage-bone composite (TFBC), have shown promise in enhancing the biological healing of rotator cuff tears in animals. However, previous studies have provided limited long-term data on TFBC repair outcomes. The effect of mechanical stimulation on TFBC has not been explored extensively. Purpose: To evaluate functional outcomes after rotator cuff repair with engineered TFBC subjected to mechanical stimulation in a 6-month follow-up using a canine in vivo model. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 40 canines with an acute infraspinatus (ISP) tendon transection model were randomly allocated to 4 groups (n =10): (1) unilateral ISP tendon undergoing suture repair only (control surgery); (2) augmentation with engineered TFBC alone (TFBC); (3) augmentation with engineered TFBC and bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) (TFBC+C); and (4) augmentation with engineered TFBC and BMSCs, as well as mechanical stimulation (TFBC+C+M). Outcome measures—including biomechanical evaluations such as failure strength, stiffness, failure mode, gross appearance, ISP tendon and muscle morphological assessment, and histological analysis—were performed 6 months after surgery. Results: As shown in the mechanical test, the TFBC+C+M group exhibited higher failure strength compared with other repair techniques. The most common failure mode was avulsion fracture in the TFBC+C+M group, but tendon-bone junction rupture was observed predominantly in different groups. Engineered TFBC with mechanical stimulation showed over 70% relative failure strength compared with normal ISP, and the other groups showed about 50% relative failure strength. Histological analysis revealed less fat infiltration and closer-to-normal muscle fiber structure in the mechanical stimulation group. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that mechanical stimulation of engineered TFBC promotes rotator cuff regeneration, thus supporting its potential for rotator cuff repair augmentation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of levomethadone/fenpipramide and metamizole alone and in combination on acute nociception. METHODS: 8 healthy, adult Beagles were used in 2 separate randomized, complete crossover, experimental trials (threshold testing and determination of minimal alveolar concentration [MAC]) with masked observers. In both trials, treatments were 0.2 mg·kg-1 levomethadone/fenpipramide (L), 75 mg·kg-1 metamizole (M), or their combination (LM). In conscious dogs, mechanical thresholds were determined using constantly rising force. Thermal thresholds were measured via ramped contact heat. The MAC of sevoflurane was determined using the bracketing method with electrical stimulus (50 V, 50 Hz, 10 ms) before and 1 and 4 hours after treatment. RESULTS: Mechanical thresholds in L and LM were significantly increased above baseline (BL) for 165 minutes and above M for 135 minutes. Percent thermal threshold excursion significantly increased above BL in L for 75 minutes and in LM for 135 minutes. In L and LM, the percent thermal threshold excursion was significantly higher than in M from 15 to 75 or 135 minutes, respectively. In L and LM, the MAC of sevoflurane was significantly reduced at 1 hour compared to BL and M. CONCLUSION Duration but not the magnitude of thermal antinociception of levomethadone/fenpipramide was increased by metamizole. Mechanical antinociception in awake dogs and anesthetic-sparing effects of levomethadone/fenpipramide were not altered. Over the course of the past six decades, liver transplantation has evolved to become the treatment of choice for chronic end-stage liver disease and some cases of acute hepatic failure. Currently, more than 34,000 liver transplants are conducted worldwide per annum, and overall one year survival rates exceed 90%. However, the early years of human liver transplantation were beset by failure. Eyewitness reports from this period make for tragic, yet compelling reading. Volume 12 of The History of Anaesthesia Society Proceedings contains one such account, written by Dr Elizabeth Gibbs. This outlined the experience of single-handedly anaesthetising the recipient of the first liver transplant to be undertaken at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK, in June 1967. Despite the best efforts of the team, the patient died from uncontrollable haemorrhage 19 hours after the start of the procedure. While this tragic outcome might have been expected in the early days of liver transplantation, Gibbs included an unsettling postscript in her paper. This stated that all of the patient's records had apparently been 'lost', and the date of the first Cambridge liver transplant was publicly reported as 2 May 1968, some 11 months after the events described. This article outlines the results of research aimed at critically appraising this postscript. In doing so a number of unexpected discoveries were made. Alternative diets for pets have gained attention in recent years due to concerns about sustainability and environmental impact. One emerging option is the inclusion of edible insects in pet food. This study aimed to survey dog (DO) and cat (CO) owners regarding their willingness to feed insect‐based pet food (IBPF) to their pets and to identify potential motivating factors. A total of 435 valid responses were evaluated, with 66% being DO and 58% CO. Of those, 24% owned both dogs and cats. About half of DO (52%) and 62% of CO were positive about IBPF. CO had a higher acceptance of IBPF than DO (p < 0.05). Moreover, both DO and CO showed a significant increase in acceptance if IBPF has been proven to provide sustainable and nutritional benefits (p < 0.01). CO adhering to a specific diet themselves showed a significantly higher acceptance of IBPF (p < 0.05), however it was independent of the type of diet. Additionally, 32% of DO and 34% of CO reported prior experience with eating edible insects themselves, and a positive entomophagy experience increased DO's (p = 0.108) and CO's (p < 0.01) acceptance of IBPF. Furthermore, the interest in entomophagy resulted in increased acceptance of IBPF by both DO and CO who had not yet tried insects (p < 0.01). In conclusion, pet owners demonstrated a favourable perception of IBPF and showed a willingness to incorporate these products into their pets' diets. CO displayed a more positive perception compared to DO, suggesting a beneficial focus on the feline niche. To enhance overall acceptance, emphasizing sustainability and conducting further research to establish the nutritional benefits of IBPF are crucial. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for pet food manufacturers and marketers to develop strategies and products aligned with the preferences and needs of pet owners. Background: Chihuahua represents an increasingly widespread breed predisposed to cardiac disease. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) might be a useful point-of-care biomarker for dogs suspected of having heart disease, but breed differences have been reported. The urinary aldosterone-to-creatinine ratio (UAldo: C) appears to be a good indicator of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity in dogs, but Chihuahuas showed significantly higher UAldo: C than other breeds. The objective of this study was to assess preliminary breed-specific reference intervals for NT-proBNP and UAldo: C in healthy Chihuahuas and evaluate sex differences in these parameters. Results: Forty-three healthy Chihuahuas dogs were enrolled. The median NT-proBNP was 347 (125–515) pmol/L, and the median UAldo: C was 2.59 (1.57–4.61) µg/g. The NT-proBNP reference interval was 125 (90% CI 125–125) – 2121.4 (90% CI 941.6–2248) pmol/L. 91% of the Chihuahuas were below the nonbreed-specific cut-off (900 pmol/L). The UAldo: C reference interval was 0.6 (90% CI 0.5–0.9) – 16.8 (90% CI 10.9–27.4) µg/g. No significant sex differences in NT-proBNP or UAldo: C were found. Conclusions: The median value, interindividual coefficient of variation and reference interval of NT-proBNP were in line with those reported for other small breeds. In contrast to previous studies, no sex differences in NT-proBNP were detected. As previously suggested, Chihuahuas seem to be characterized by higher values of UAldo: C than other breeds. A 3‐year‐old crossbreed dog (case 1) and a 3‐month‐old German Shorthaired Pointer (case 2) were presented for acute signs of encephalopathy. A portosystemic shunt (PSS) was suspected based on clinical context and laboratory exam results and was confirmed on computed tomography (CT) angiography in both cases. A left‐sided azygos (case 1) and right‐sided azygos (case 2) continuation of an interrupted caudal vena cava (CVC) and a situs ambiguous (SA) were also observed and considered as incidental findings. Both dogs underwent PSS surgical correction. Postsurgical follow‐up imaging procedures suggested concomitant primary hypoplasia of the portal vein (PHPV) in both cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a severe tickborne disease that can reach epidemic proportions in communities with certain social and ecologic risk factors. In some areas, the case-fatality rate of brown dog tick-associated RMSF is up to 50%. Because of the spread of brown dog tick-associated RMSF in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the disease has the potential to emerge and become endemic in other communities that have large populations of free-roaming dogs, brown dog ticks, limited resources, and low provider awareness of the disease. By using a One Health approach, interdisciplinary teams can identify communities at risk and prevent severe or fatal RMSF in humans before cases occur. We have developed a conceptual framework for RMSF prevention to enable communities to identify their RMSF risk level and implement prevention and control strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To compare the perioperative analgesic effect of lateral versus latero-ventral quadratus lumborum block (QLB) in dogs undergoing laparoscopic ovariectomy. Randomized, blinded clinical study. A total of 15 client-owned female dogs undergoing laparoscopic ovariectomy. Animals were randomly assigned to receive a bilateral QLB, performed with 0.3 mL kg–1 ropivacaine 0.5%, either with lateral (group L QLB , n = 7) or latero-ventral approach (group LV QLB , n = 7). Dogs were premedicated intramuscularly with methadone 0.2 mg kg–1 and dexmedetomidine 3 μg kg–1. General anaesthesia was induced intravenously (IV) with propofol and maintained with isoflurane. Cardiovascular and respiratory variables were continuously monitored and recorded every 5 minutes during surgery. Fentanyl 3 μg kg–1 was administered IV if there was a 20% increase in heart rate and/or mean arterial pressure from previous values recorded 5 minutes before. Meloxicam 0.2 mg kg–1 was administered IV to all dogs during recovery. The short-form of the Glasgow Composite Pain Scale was used hourly for 8 hours post-QLB. Methadone 0.2 mg kg–1 was administered IV when pain score was ≥ 6/24. A chi-square test compared the number of dogs requiring intraoperative rescue fentanyl. A Friedman test with a Dunn's post hoc was used to evaluate the trend in postoperative pain scores within each group, and a Mann–Whitney U test compared scores between the groups at each time point; p < 0.05. Significantly fewer dogs required intraoperative rescue fentanyl in group L QLB than in group LV QLB. No dog required postoperative rescue methadone, and there were no significant differences in pain scores. Bilateral QLB performed with lateral approach reduced the number of dogs requiring intraoperative rescue analgesia in comparison with the latero-ventral approach. To evaluate the effects of wrapping the extremities of small dogs with table leg covers to prevent hypothermia during anesthesia. Randomized parallel-group study. A total of 60 adult dogs with a body mass <15 kg anesthetized for soft tissue surgery. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The control group received routine intraoperative thermal support, while the limb-wrapping group had their peripheral limbs covered with table leg covers up to the mid-metacarpal/metatarsal region, in addition to routine thermal support. Rectal temperature during anesthesia was recorded and compared between the two groups. Data analyses were performed using Student's t -test for rectal temperature, Fisher's exact test for hypothermia incidence and analysis of covariance for the effect of limb-wrapping while taking other factors into account. Thirty dogs were included per group. Rectal temperature did not differ between the groups at the time of intubation, but it was significantly higher in the limb-wrapping group (36.7 ± 1.0 °C) than in the control group (35.9 ± 0.8 °C) at the end of surgery (p = 0.003). The mean difference was 0.81 °C (95% confidence interval of mean difference 0.33–1.29 °C). The incidence of hypothermia (<37.0 °C) was significantly lower in the limb-wrapping group than in the control group (19/30 versus 28/30 dogs, respectively; p = 0.010). For dogs with body masses <15 kg, limb-wrapping with table leg covers slowed the reduction in intraoperative rectal temperature. Limb-wrapping is inexpensive and easy to perform, making it a practical method for minimizing hypothermia during anesthesia in small dogs undergoing soft tissue surgery. To compare the sensitivity and specificity of pH with multichannel intraluminal impedance (pH-MII), pH-metry (pH) alone and MII alone to direct observation of GOR by endoscopy in anaesthetized dogs. A prospective comparative trial in a live canine model. A group of 35 (22 females, 13 males) dogs of various breeds. The mean (range) body weight and age were 31.9 (14–40) kg and 5.6 (0.75–12) years, respectively. All dogs were premedicated with medetomidine and morphine, anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained on isoflurane in oxygen. A monitoring assembly consisting of an endoscopy camera, endotracheal tube and a disposable flexible pH-MII catheter was used to measure oesophageal pH, MII and directly visualize reflux. Visual reflux score was (0–3) and pH was recorded on a data capture sheet. Reflux was considered to have occurred whenever oesophageal pH was < 4.0 or > 7.5, device software analysing MII data detected fluid or a visual reflux score of 2 or 3 were assigned. Receiver operator curves (ROC) analysis was used to determine sensitivity and specificity for each monitoring method to detect GOR. Endoscopy identified GOR in 20 dogs (57%), pH-MII in 19 dogs (54%), pH alone in 13 dogs (37%) and MII alone in 12 dogs (24%). ROC analysis showed fair accuracy for pH-MII and pH alone, whereas MII demonstrated low accuracy. In conclusion, pH-MII is a reliable method for detecting GOR and emerges as a promising tool for future research. Endoscopy is reliable and provides the ability to subjectively quantify the volume of reflux; however, it lacks the ability to discern the pH of refluxate. pH alone misses reflux events with intermediate pH (4.1–7.4). To evaluate the feasibility of an ultrasound-guided technique targeting the medial branches of the dorsal ramus of the spinal nerves (DRSN) by injecting a dye solution at the caudal aspect of the base of lumbar mammillary processes [i.e. the retromammillary (RM) space]. Feasibility, descriptive, anatomical study. Eleven canine cadavers. Using anatomical dissections, the relationship between the mammillary processes and the branches of the DRSN of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spine was studied in two cadavers. Subsequently, ultrasound-guided RM injections were administered in nine cadavers, randomly assigned to low volume (LV; 0.01 mL kg–1) of a dye solution at multiple points from L3 to L6 on one side, and high volume (HV; 0.4 mL kg–1) at a single L4 point on the contralateral side. Gross anatomical dissections were immediately performed after the injections. The RM injections were feasible if ultrasonographic landmarks were identifiable in at least 80% of cases, and 80% of LV injections showed medial branch staining. A one-sample binomial test was used for testing feasibility. The medial branches emerged shortly after the DRSN exited the intervertebral foramen and traveled towards the caudal aspect of the base of the mammillary process, which served as the target injection point. With LV, 36 out of 36 (100%) injected medial branches were stained, meeting the criteria of feasibility (p < 0.001). The median (range) number of stained medial branches per cadaver were 4 (4–4) and 2 (1–3), with LV and HV, respectively. Although no lateral branches were stained with LV, 1 (0–2) was stained with HV. Neither ventral branch staining nor epidural spread was noted in any cadaver. To compare perioperative opioid consumption in dogs undergoing pelvic limb surgeries and receiving a lumbosacral plexus block by combining a lumbar [lateral pre-iliac (LPI)] block with a lumbosacral trunk [i.e. parasacral (PS group) or greater ischiatic notch plane (GIN group)] block. Study design Retrospective, descriptive, exploratory, noninferiority cohort study. Medical records of 37 client-owned dogs were analyzed. Intraoperative (primary outcome) and postoperative (24 hours) opioid use, 24 hour cumulative pain scores and prevalence of complications were compared between the two groups. Opioid use was quantified in morphine equivalents (ME, mg kg–1). The noninferiority limit for intraoperative opioid consumption was set at 0.05 ME kg–1 hour–1. Demographic data, procedure duration, surgery type and perioperative dexmedetomidine and ketamine use were also collected. A t -test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test, a Fisher's exact test and multivariable linear regression were used. Significance was set at p < 0.05. The GIN and PS groups comprised 17 and 20 dogs, respectively. Total intraoperative ME consumption was 0.17 (0.11–0.21) and 0.22 (0.16–0.30) mg kg–1 hour–1 for the GIN and PS groups, respectively (p = 0.077). The noninferiority analysis adjusted by surgery type and body mass revealed that the mean difference between the groups (GIN – PS) was –0.039 (95% CI –0.11–0.03, p = 0.247) ME mg kg–1 hour–1, indicating that the GIN group was not inferior to the PS group regarding intraoperative ME consumption. Dexmedetomidine and ketamine use, postoperative ME consumption and pain scores were similar between groups. This retrospective study and preliminary observations support the clinical use of the GIN plane block, demonstrating its noninferiority to the PS block when combined with the LPI block for multimodal perioperative analgesia in dogs undergoing pelvic limb surgeries. To describe the use of plasma transfusion in anaesthetized dogs, specifically the triggers for use, the population administered plasma, reported adverse events and human errors associated with transfusion. Retrospective observational study. A total of 85 client-owned dogs. A search of electronic transfusion and anaesthetic records at a university teaching hospital was performed to identify dogs administered plasma during the study period (January 2017 to June 2021). Data collected included signalment, surgical procedure, intraoperative triggers for transfusion, the type of plasma, rate of transfusion and the presence of transfusion reactions, human errors or deviation from transfusion guidelines. During this period, 85 dogs were administered plasma. Sepsis was diagnosed in 49/85 (58%) dogs, with 42/85 (49%) animals undergoing surgery for septic peritonitis. Perianaesthetic hypotension contributed to the decision to administer plasma in 67/85 (79%) dogs. In 33/85 (39%) dogs, hypotension was the only reason for transfusion, while 31/85 (36%) had other influencing factors, most commonly hypoproteinaemia. Fresh frozen plasma was administered in 95% of cases. Only 31% of transfusions were started at a slower 'test dose' rate and 79% of dogs administered boluses of plasma. No definite, probable or possible transfusion reactions were identified using current veterinary guidelines. Plasma transfusions were commonly administered to dogs presenting with sepsis for haemodynamic optimization. Clinicians often chose to bolus plasma instead of initiating transfusions at the recommended initial slow starting rate. No transfusion reactions were identified; however, some reactions may have been masked by the effects of general anaesthesia and/or have been difficult to recognize in this critically ill canine population. To compare the portion of tidal volume (V T) ventilating dead space volumes in nonbrachycephalic cats and dogs with small body mass receiving volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) with a fixed V T. Prospective, experimental study. A group of eight healthy adult cats and dogs [ideal body weight (IBW): 3.0 ± 0.5 and 3.8 ± 1.1 kg, respectively]. Anesthetized cats and dogs received VCV with a 12 mL kg–1 V T (inspiratory pause ≥ 0.5 seconds). Respiratory rate (f R) was adjusted to maintain normocapnia. Airway dead space (V Daw) and alveolar tidal volume (V Talv) were measured by volumetric capnography. Physiological dead space (V Dphys) and V Dphys /V T ratio were calculated using the Bohr–Enghoff method. Data recorded before surgery were compared by an unpaired t -test or Mann–Whitney U test (p < 0.05 considered significant). The IBW (p = 0.07), PaCO 2 (p = 0.40) and expired V T [V T(exp) ] (p = 0.77) did not differ significantly between species. The V Daw (mL kg–1) was lower in cats (3.7 ± 0.4) than in dogs (7.7 ± 0.9) (p < 0.0001). The V Talv (mL kg–1) was larger in cats (8.3 ± 0.7) than in dogs (4.3 ± 0.7) (p < 0.0001). Cats presented a smaller V Dphys /V T ratio (0.33 ± 0.03) and V Dphys (4.0 ± 0.3 mL kg–1) than dogs (V Dphys /V T : 0.60 ± 0.09; V Dphys : 7.2 ± 1.4 mL kg–1) (p < 0.0001). The f R and minute ventilation (V T(exp) × f R) were lower in cats than in dogs (p = 0.048 and p = 0.038, respectively). A fixed V T results in more effective ventilation in cats than in dogs with small body mass because of species-specific differences in and V Daw and V Dphys. Aim: To assess the possibility of vertical alveolar ridge augmentation by means of activation of the periosteum. Materials and Methods: Six adult male Beagle dogs were used for the study. All premolars and first molars were extracted, and one vertical saucer‐shaped bony defect was created on each side of the mandible. After 3 months of healing, full‐thickness muco‐periosteal flaps were elevated, and one distraction device was placed on each side of the mandible. The distraction plate was left submerged, and the activation mechanism connected to the distraction rod was exposed intra‐orally. The protocol of periosteal activation (PP: periosteal 'pumping') was initiated after a latency of 7 days. The alternation of activation and relaxation at the rate of 0.35 mm/12 h during 5 days was followed by the sole activation of 0.35 mm/12 h for 5 days (PP group). Devices were left inactivated on the contralateral control side of the mandible (C group). All animals were euthanized after 8 weeks of consolidation. Samples were analysed histologically and by means of micro‐CT. Results: New mature lamellar bone was formed over the pristine bone in all groups. More intensive signs of bone modelling and remodelling were observed in the PP group compared to the C group. Mean new bone, bone marrow, connective tissue and total volumetric densities were greater in the PP group (p < 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.003 and p < 0.001, respectively). No differences were observed in the relative area parameters. Total tissue volume and bone volume were higher in the PP group (p = 0.031 and p = 0.076, respectively), while the bone mineral densities were higher in the C group (p = 0.041 and p = 0.003, respectively). Trabecular number, trabecular thickness and trabecular separation values were similar between the two groups. The analysis and classification of cavitary effusions play a crucial role in determining a patient’s diagnosis and prognosis. This prospective study assed ed the activity of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) and the concentration of Total Protein (TP) in serum, pleural, and peritoneal effusions in dogs and cats. Effusions were categorized into three groups: GI (low protein transudate), GII (high protein transudate), and GIII (exudate) following conventional classification. These groups, irrespective of species, were further divided into NPG (neoplastic) and NNG (non-neoplastic) groups. In dogs, significant differences were observed among groups GI, GII, and GIII in terms of effusion LDH activity/ serum LDH (LDHR), effusion LDH activity, serum TP/effusion TP (TPR), and effusion TP. Increased LDH activity in effusion was associated with the presence of neoplasia. The groups organized based on the etiopathogenesis of the effusion exhibited varying values of serum TP, TPR, LDHR, effusion TP, and LDH activity in the effusion. Conversely, statistical analysis of the data from cats showed no differences between the groups for the parameters evaluated in this study. Compared to conventional classification, Light’s criteria demonstrated greater sensitivity in distinguishing between transudates and exudates and higher specificity in identifying transudates. We propose the use of established biochemical analyses to discern the mechanism of cavitary effusion formation and advocate for LDH activity measurement in effusions as a complementary diagnostic tool for cavitary neoplasms, especially in cases where cytological analysis of the effusion yields inconclusive results. Sinonasal neoplasms represent approximately 1% of all neoplasms and represent a major challenge for treatment. The treatment of nasal tumors must be local, and radiotherapy can be a good option in these cases. This study evaluated the therapeutic response of canine sinonasal neoplasms to megavoltage radiotherapy, and consequently, its influence on the survival and quality of life of these animals. We included 26 dogs with sinonasal neoplasms through histopathological and cytological examination. Dogs were treated with radiotherapy at total doses of 42–54 Gy (for carcinomas) and 45 Gy (for sarcomas) in 15–18 fractions of 2.8–3.0 Gy. Tumor staging was performed based on skull tomography. The most frequent clinical signs of sinonasal neoplasms were sneezing, nasal noise, and epistaxis. Acute side effects were mild and more frequent. Survival was evaluated based on tumor stage, obtaining a mean overall survival of 329 days (95% confidence interval, 229–428) and a median of 252.5 days. The survival time in animals in stage T3/T4 was significantly shorter than that in those in stage T1/T2 (P < 0.05). Moreover, 86.4% of the treated animals showed clinical improvement. Diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most prevalent subtype of non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in domestic dogs, with many similarities to its human counterpart. The progression of the disease is rapid, and treatment must be initiated early to achieve cancer remission and extend life. This study examined the relationship between progression‐free survival (PFS) and microRNA (miRNA) expression in dogs with DLBCL. miRNAs are small non‐coding RNA molecules that typically regulate gene expression post‐transcriptionally. They are involved in several pathophysiological processes, including the growth and progression of cancer. Based on the analysis of small RNA sequencing (sRNA‐seq) data, we validated a group of miRNAs in lymph nodes from 44 DLBCL‐affected dogs with known outcomes. We used quantitative PCR to quantify their expression and report a specific subset of miRNAs is associated with decreased PFS in dogs with DLBCL. The miR‐192‐5p and miR‐16‐5p expression were significantly downregulated in dogs with increased PFS. These results indicate that miRNA profiling may potentially identify dogs with DLBCL that will experience poor outcomes following treatment. A 10-y-old spayed female Staffordshire Terrier dog was evaluated because of a cutaneous left ear base mass. Cytology revealed sheets of cells with anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, round-to-oval or plasmacytoid cytoplasm, and round, central, or eccentric nuclei; binucleate cells were present. Cytologic findings were consistent with a round cell tumor (plasmacytoma or agranular mast cell tumor), amelanotic melanoma, or anaplastic carcinoma. Histologically, neoplastic cells were polygonal to elongate, with round-to-oval nuclei and prominent nucleoli and arranged in sheets and nests on a fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells with plasmacytoid morphology (round, glassy, eosinophilic cytoplasm with eccentric nuclei) were present in ~30% of the neoplasm. There were 18 mitoses in 2.37 mm2 (10 FN22/40× fields). Neoplastic cells had cytoplasmic immunolabeling for melan A and PNL2 and no immunolabeling for AE3/1 and MUM1, consistent with a dermal melanoma with plasmacytoid differentiation. The patient was re-evaluated ~1 mo after the first biopsy because of local recurrence of the original mass and new masses on the interscapular area and right elbow; these neoplasms were histologically identical to the original submission, plus scattered neoplastic cells in the new masses contained brown cytoplasmic pigment. The dog was euthanized because of swelling and hemorrhage of the tumors and right pelvic limb lameness. Our findings were consistent with a dermal melanoma with plasmacytoid features that were similar to human plasmacytoid melanoma, a rare variant of human melanoma that is diagnostically challenging as it may mimic a plasmacytoma. Thyroid tumors occur in many domestic species, but are most common in the dog, in which they are classified as follicular or medullary. During 2012–2016, we received tissue specimens or whole carcasses of 4 dogs with variable enlargement of the thyroid glands. The 2 males and 2 females were of mixed (mongrel) inbreeding, 3–4.5-y-old. All tumors had lobulated architecture forming follicular structures variably containing colloid. On immunohistochemistry of the tumors from 3 of the dogs, 2 were thyroglobulin positive, and all 3 were negative for calcitonin, confirming follicular thyroid carcinoma in 2 of the dogs.
