A 1999 study looking into how the British public viewed the output of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found some 79% denied having any knowledge of the existence of the ONS. When questioned on their views on the quality of the data in the retail price index some 53% felt they were being misinformed. Of the 5% of respondents who knew the ONS, some 75% felt the work of the organisation was good. Most peoples' attitudes to statistical data were formed by how they were used in the media and by politicians.
