Chimpanzee societies generally show male philopatry and female dispersal. However, demographic data on wild chimpanzee societies from long-term study sites have revealed that some females give birth in their natal group (i.e., “remaining females”). Here, we report two remaining females in the M group in Mahale, Tanzania, and compare their cases with previous reports to explore the social and ecological factors that lead to females remaining in their natal group. The results revealed that neither the social traits of the remaining females nor the ecological factors they experienced showed a coherent trend. However, we found multiple, non-mutually exclusive potential factors that may influence the decision by females to remain in their natal group: a decrease in indirect feeding competition, support from mothers or allomothers in the care of offspring and in aggressive interactions with other individuals, close relationships with the other remaining females, and a short adolescent infertility period. Additionally, we observed a natal female copulating with her older brother, which was the first observation of brother–sister incest in Mahale. Although DNA analysis revealed that her infant was not a product of inbreeding, the pair copulated frequently in the latter half of her estrus period, suggesting that they did not avoid incest behaviorally to avoid inbreeding. Sleep in Drosophila was defined in the year 2000 by using Drosophila Activity Monitor (DAM) system. But DAM is very small tube space and one fly per tube is very limited to analyze for fly social behavior. To overcome such demerits of DAM system, we developed a novel automated sleep and rhythm analysis system (AutoCircaS) which monitors and records any behaviors like social mating, sleep, and circadian rhythm in flies (Drosophila) and small fishes medaka (Oryzias latipes) in free space using the time-lapse (one frame per 10 sec) imaging. AutoCircaS can detect the caffeine-induced insomnia in flies in light-dark (LD) and constant dark (DD) conditions. Thus, using the AutoCircaS, we discovered that Japanese traditional herbal medicines, KyushinKannouGan-ki (KKG), NouKassei (NK) as well as, and Sansoninto, significantly improved caffeine-induced insomnia in flies. The data suggest that AutoCircaS is useful for sleep analysis of small animals and screening of new sedative-hypnotics from many origins.

A torque management model (TMM) focused on the close matching of driving requirements and operating conditions for electric tractors was developed. The TMM used the accelerator pedal output signal to establish the torque demand to adapt for two conditions – field traction and road driving. Further, the TMM uses the limitations of a time-based torque ramp, maximum motor torque at the current speed, and battery state of charge. To verify the performance of the TMM, a tractor control unit (TCU) to support the TMM was designed, and a test bench comprising both driving and loading devices was built. The bench provided the TMM/TCU with the necessary operating states needed as inputs to determine the torque demand. Experiments were performed under five specific manoeuvring cases. The test results showed that the TMM was capable of accurately converting pedal manipulations into torque demands both in the field traction and road driving conditions. The torque changes during testing were properly smoothed by limiting the rising and falling time of the target torque, which was favourable for eliminating impacts due to torque fluctuations. Overloading operations that would occur in case of excessive torque request were avoided by the torque capacity limitation both in the field traction and road acceleration tests. When the bus voltage was deliberately adjusted below the alarm threshold, the TMM could scale down the torque demand in real time according to the deviation between the actual voltage and the threshold, and therefore, it always kept the voltage above the safe level.

The reproductive success of male primates is not always associated with dominance status. For example, even though male orangutans exhibit intra-sexual dimorphism and clear dominance relationships exist among males, previous studies have reported that both morphs are able to sire offspring. The present study aimed to compare the reproductive success of two male morphs, and to determine whether unflanged males sired offspring in a free-ranging population of Bornean orangutans, using 12 microsatellite loci to determine the paternity of eight infants. A single flanged male sired most of the offspring from parous females, and an unflanged male sired a firstborn. This is consistent with our observation that the dominant flanged male showed little interest in nulliparous females, whereas the unflanged males frequently mated with them. This suggests that the dominant flanged male monopolizes the fertilization of parous females and that unflanged males take advantage of any mating opportunities that arise in the absence of the flanged male, even though the conception probability of nulliparous females is relatively low.

Bread has been a staple of the human diet since antiquity. Many Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains have been used in raising the dough during bread-making. However, the genetic relationships and characteristics of these strains are not well understood. In this study, we analyzed several S. cerevisiae strains using microsatellite polymorphism. First, we extracted DNA from cooked bread (baked, steamed, and fried) and analyzed S. cerevisiae polymorphisms using six microsatellite loci, which is half of the subset reported previously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that demonstrates the possibility of analyzing S. cerevisiae microsatellite polymorphisms using cooked bread as a source of yeast DNA.

Bocaparvoviruses have been studied extensively owing to their ability to cause respiratory illness or gastroenteritis in humans. Some bocaparvoviruses have been detected in non-human primates (gorillas and chimpanzees), but the diversity and evolution of these viruses are not fully understood. In this study, we collected 107 fecal samples from wild western lowland gorillas in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park in Gabon to investigate the presence of bocaparvoviruses. Using a combination of pan-bocaparvovirus PCR and individual identification by microsatellite genotyping, we found that two samples from two apparently healthy infant gorillas were positive for bocaparvovirus. Sequencing and phylogenetic analyses revealed that the two gorilla bocaparvovirus strains are nearly identical and are closely related to viruses in the species Primate bocaparvovirus 2 (with 86.0% nucleotide identity to a human bocavirus 2 isolate). To our knowledge, this is the first report showing the presence of a non-human primate bocaparovirus within Primate bocaparvovirus 2. Our findings provide novel insights into the diversity and evolution of bocaparvoviruses and highlight the importance of surveying these viruses for the safe management of gorilla-based ecotourism.

Extraction of DNA from non-invasive samples (feces) has been used increasingly in genetic research on wildlife. For effective and reliable genetic analyses, knowledge about which samples should be selected in the field is essential. For this reason, we examined the process of DNA degradation in feces of deer. We collected fresh fecal pellets from three wild deer living in a warm temperate forest. We then assessed the effects of time (3, 5, and 10 days) under three environmental conditions (on the forest floor, on exposed ground, and inside the laboratory) on the rates of correct genotyping (CG), amplification failure (NA), genotyping error among positive amplification (ER), false alleles (FA), and allelic dropout (AD) of 15 microsatellite loci. The rate of CG significantly decreased, and those of NA and FA increased with increasing lapse of time. Rates of CG tended to be highest and those of NA, ER, FA, and AD to be lowest in feces kept inside, followed by those on the forest floor. Suitability of samples for DNA extraction was lowest in fecal pellets left on exposed ground, and we suspect that rain may hasten DNA degradation. NA rate could serve as a reliable indicator of the quality of fecal pellets because it was significantly positively correlated with ER rate. For efficient genetic analyses using deer feces in warm temperate zones, we recommend collecting fecal pellets within 3 days of defecation, during periods without rainfall and from under the cover of trees.

Statistics show that lateral overturns are the most frequent fatal accidents involving tractors. There is thus much research interest in improving tractor lateral stability. Previous research has discovered the effects of various factors on tractor dynamic responses. While these factors have been analysed separately, their relative significance with respect to other factors remain uncertain. Furthermore, the practical limits of what operators can do have not been considered. The present study assumed a possible case that a tractor operator has several spare tyres of different types and service condition. Additionally, the ballast weight, track width, and implement position can usually be controlled before operation. A scale model tractor was thus developed allowing changes to these factors. The model tractor was designated to pass over typical farming road surfaces. Moreover, the tractor lateral stability was evaluated in terms of the roll angle, lateral-load transfer ratio, and Phase I overturn index. Employing the Taguchi method, we arranged experiments and assessed the applicability of the three kinds of indexes regarding tractor Phase I overturn. Results revealed that the roll angle did not well reflect the initiations of overturns. Compared with the lateral-load transfer ratio, the Phase I overturn index had more convincing factorial effects on tractor stability. Further investigation of the suggested tractor configuration supported this conclusion by comparing predicted and experimental results. In practical cases, this approach may provide a reference for engineers to help operators improve driving safety with limited spare parts.

This study focuses on the development and evaluation of a remote field environmental monitoring and control framework, implementing a local-global management strategy to overcome the unstable network connection in the rural area. The framework consists of environmental monitoring and control node as the local management subsystem (LMS), and the web data providing and system management as the global management subsystem (GMS) to establish a simple and flexible remote environmental monitoring and control based on a cloud platform. The supporting features are online and offline environmental monitoring, synchronization of system configuration, actuation, and offline management. Two field tests were conducted to verify its performances and functionalities, (1) environmental monitoring on tropical horticulture cultivation in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and (2) implementation of the monitoring and control for automatic drip irrigation control based on soil moisture content for tomato. As the result of the first test, the developed framework could help to maintain the sustainability of environmental monitoring under unstable network connection over 80% availability of the data with local offline measurement up to 24% of the total entries. From the second test result, the framework could support the real-time monitoring and control of soil moisture content as well as increase the system flexibility in the adjustment of the system configuration remotely. We investigated the relative abundance of four duiker species and the environmental effect including human impacts on their abundance in the forest of Moukalaba, Gabon. We counted and collected fresh faeces from duikers in thirteen 2-km line transects established in different types of vegetation. Genetic species identification showed that blue duiker (Philantomba monticola), Ogilby’s duiker (Cephalophus ogilbyi, which might include the sister species Peter’s duiker Cephalophus callipygus), bay duiker (Cephalophus dorsalis), and yellow-backed duiker (Cephalophus silvicultor) coexisted. Genetic analyses successfully identified Ogilby’s and bay duiker, which are difficult to discriminate using other methods. The blue, Ogilby’s, and yellow-backed duikers were found in all transects. The dung abundance of bay duiker was quite low compared to other duiker species. This result suggests the importance of accumulating information regarding the abundance of each duiker species for updating their conservation status. The dung count method with genetic species identification may be useful for this purpose. The dung abundance of Ogilby’s duikers and blue duikers was affected by human impacts, while that of yellow-backed duikers was not affected by human impacts. The dung abundance of Ogilby’s duikers was lower in young secondary forests, which are regenerating after significant human disturbance. In contrast, generalized liner mixed model showed that the dung abundance of blue duikers was not affected by vegetation type and was lower in transects nearer to the villages, which might be due to past hunting activity. The difference in human impacts among duiker species should be considered for their conservation management.

A small chimpanzee habitat in the montane forest of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, is connected with the lowland forest of this park through a corridor, which is affected by human encroachment. To assess the conservation status of the chimpanzee population in this small habitat, we estimated the size of the community and evaluated its genetic diversity by using 279 fecal samples collected in the montane forest of Kahuzi. Using autosomal microsatellite (or short tandem repeat, STR) loci, we identified 32 individuals, comprising 19 females and 13 males. Samples from 24 individuals were collected at least twice and a genetic mark-recapture analysis estimated that the community size was 36 (range: 32-42). Data on nest site sharing confirmed that all the samples belonged to the same community. Nest site sharing information may be useful in population studies of unhabituated chimpanzees. The genetic structure and diversity of the 32 genotyped individuals was assessed using Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (Y-STR) loci and mitochondrial D-loops. One dominant Y-STR haplotype was found, whereas there was no dominant haplotype in the mitochondrial region, reflecting a female-biased dispersal pattern, which is typical of chimpanzees. The genetic diversity for three markers in Kahuzi chimpanzees was comparable to that in other eastern chimpanzee populations. A relatively high heterozygosity and negative inbreeding coefficient (FIS ) for STR loci suggests that the study community belongs to an outbreeding chimpanzee population. These findings suggest that individuals of the study community may have reproductive contact with other chimpanzee individuals from neighboring communities in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, at least in the recent past. Tractor overturns are serious potential hazards for operators. While rollover protective structures (ROPS) protect operators passively, greater protection can be achieved through theoretical prediction of a potential overturn. Given effective warning, an operator can act to correct a tractor's motion when a tyre is about to lose contact with the ground. Such a loss of contact is associated with the initiation of a Phase I tractor overturn. However, it remains unclear how the initiation of tractor overturn is influenced by certain factors. Furthermore, the current mathematical models for tractors should be further extended for general utilisation. This study was conducted to develop stability indicators based on a more general model for dynamic Phase I tractor overturn. We considered practical tractor configurations and motion characteristics in a three-dimensional (3D) reference frame in formulating the mathematical model. Tractor stability indicators for overturn and sideslip were derived from force calculations. A parametric study was conducted using an example tractor. The tractor speed and slope angle were found to affect the overturning stability significantly. The coefficient of maximum static friction was found to be the main factor contributing to tractor sideslip. Critical tractor speeds for various ground conditions were identified by considering the zero values of the tractor stability indicators. The critical tractor speed was determined as a function of the maximum static friction and the slope angle. By providing a display device based on ergonomics principles, the results of this study can be further implemented in the form of guidance to operators.

We construct a canonical Hausdorff complex analytic moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kahler–Ricci solitons. This enlarges the moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kahler–Einstein metrics. We discover a moment map picture for Kahler–Ricci solitons, and give complex analytic charts on the topological space consisting of Kahler–Ricci solitons, by studying differential geometric aspects of this moment map. Some stacky words and arguments on Gromov–Hausdorff convergence help to glue them together in the holomorphic manner.

We isolated and characterized 11 microsatellite markers for Ovophis okinavensis, a viperid species endemic to the Ryukyu Archipelago. These markers showed polymorphism among 25 individuals from Okinawajima Island. The number of alleles per locus was 3–11, and observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.240–0.960 and 0.218–0.853, respectively. Cross-amplification confirmed that at least seven out of the 11 microsatellite markers were applicable to a putative relative, Trimeresurus gracilis. The markers provided here are expected to be valuable for population- and/or individual-level genetic studies of not only O. okinavenesis, but also its relatives.

We developed predictive models for yield and protein content of brown rice.The models were built based on pattern recognition using SVMs.Explanatory variables included growth, nutrition and meteorological conditions.The typical accuracy was within 1tha-1 in yield and 0.8% in protein content.The model reasonably visualized patterns for yield and protein content classes. Rice production in Japan is facing problems of yield and quality instability owing to recent climate changes, aging of farmers, and a decrease in the farmer population. Thus, it is becoming important to develop an improved rice production technology that utilizes collected data about rice production rather than relying on the conventional technology that is based on the experience and knowledge of individual farmers. We developed predictive models for yield and protein content of brown rice that can provide useful knowledge to support farmer's management decision-making, utilizing data sets from 47 paddy fields where rice was produced under various environments and management styles. Support vector machines (SVMs) were applied to build the predictive models based on explanatory variables representing the growth and nutrition conditions after the heading stage and the meteorological environment after the late spikelet initiation stage. The models achieved quantitative accuracy that was within approximately 1tha-1 in yield for 85.1% of the total data sets and within 0.8% in protein content for 76.6% of the total data sets, respectively. Further, patterns of explanatory variables classified in three classes of yield and protein content, which were visualized by the predictive models, were reasonable in terms of knowledge of crop science. We found that the predictive models using SVMs had the potential to describe a relation between yield or protein content and multiple explanatory variables that reflected diverse rice production in actual fields, and could provide useful knowledge for decision-making of topdressing and basal fertilization.

The male dispersal patterns of western lowland gorillas (WLGs, Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are not well understood. To determine whether most silverbacks stay close to their relatives, we analyzed autosomal and Y-chromosomal microsatellites (STRs) in wild WLGs at Moukalaba, Gabon. We obtained STR genotypes for 38 individuals, including eight silverbacks and 12 adult females in an approximately 40 km2 area. Among them, 20 individuals were members of one identified group (Group Gentil; GG), including one silverback and six adult females. The silverback sired all 13 of the offspring in GG and no Y-STR polymorphism within GG was found, as expected in a one-male group structure. Over all silverbacks sampled, Y-STR diversity was high considering the limited sampling area, and silverbacks with similar Y-STR haplotypes were not always located in nearby areas. Although the misclassification rate of kinship estimates in this study was not negligible, there were no kin dyads among all silverbacks sampled. These results suggest that silverbacks born in the same group do not stay close to each other after maturation. The Y-STR diversity in this study was similar to that of a previous study conducted in an area that was approximately 150 times larger than our study area. Similarity of WLG Y-STR diversity between studies at different sampling scales suggests that male gene flow may not be geographically limited. The grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) is a hystricomorph rodent that inhabits mainly Sub-Saharan Africa and its meat is highly relished by most people in this region. The animal is hunted in the wild using techniques that are sometimes detrimental to the environment. It is therefore being domesticated to make the meat readily available to forestall the negative consequences of hunting. There are currently no genetic markers available and we report here, 33 novel microsatellite markers developed using next-generation sequencing technology. The number of alleles ranged from 3 to 11 (mean 6.4) while the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.188 to 1.000 (mean 0.591) and 0.322–0.873 (mean 0.713), respectively. Cumulative probability of identity (PI) for all loci was very low (PI = 3.1 × 10−33), indicating that these markers can be used for individual identification in the domestic setting. They will also be useful to study the genetic diversity of the grasscutter in the wild for population monitoring and conservation.

In this paper, we explore the copper/palladium-cocatalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 1-aryl-2-trimethylsilylethynes with aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides as coupling partners, to furnish unsymmetrically disubstituted ethynes in moderate to excellent yields. Various aryl iodides were subjected to reaction under the optimized conditions with 5 mol % of Pd(PPh 3 ) 2 and 50 mol % of CuCl. The steric properties of the aryl iodide proved more influential to the outcome of the cross-coupling reaction than electronic factors. In addition, we succeeded in synthesizing unsymmetrical diarylethynes using two different aryl iodides in one-pot. Furthermore, under the same reaction conditions with 10 mol % of PdCl 2 , 40 mol % of P(4-FC 6 H 4 ) 3 , and 50 mol % of CuCl as catalyst, we succeeded in synthesizing unsymmetrical diarylethynes from various aryl bromides. Finally, we explored reactions with aryl chlorides and duly discovered that unsymmetrical diarylethynes were obtainable in moderate to good yields when 10 mol % of Pd(OAc) 2 , 10 mol % of (−)-DIOP, and 10 mol % of CuCl were used. These reactions proceed through a direct activation of a carbon–silicon bond in alkynylsilanes by CuCl to generate the corresponding alkynylcopper species via transmetalation from silicon to copper. Mechanistic investigations on the reaction of alkynylsilanes with aryl bromides confirmed that the trimethylsilyl bromide generated in situ retarded both transmetalation steps between CuCl and alkynylsilane, and between palladium(II) species formed by oxidative addition and alkynylcopper species.

Loss of synapses is associated with cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the molecular mechanism underlying this synaptic impairment is not well understood. EphA4 is a substrate of γ-secretase, and the γ-secretase-cleaved EphA4 intracellular domain (EICD) is known to enhance the formation of dendritic spines via activation of the Rac signaling pathway. Here, we show that the amount of Rac1 is significantly reduced, and correlated with the level of EICD in the frontal lobes of AD patients. Biochemical analyses revealed that the amount of membrane-associated EICD was decreased and strongly correlated with the level of membrane-associated Rac1, which is considered to be active Rac1. The synaptic scaffolding protein, postsynaptic density (PSD)-95, was specifically decreased in AD, and the amount of PSD-95 correlated with the level of Rac1. Moreover, the amounts of Rac1 and PSD-95 were negatively correlated with the extent of tau phosphorylation, which is crucial for neurofibrillary tangle formation. These results suggest that attenuation of the EICD-mediated Rac signaling pathway is involved in the synaptic pathogenesis of AD.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o equilíbrio corporal e quantificar possíveis alterações na posturografia estática do Balance Rehabilitation Unit (BRU TM) em pacientes com disfunção vestibular. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo, com prontuários de 100 pacientes com topodiagnóstico de disfunção vestibular periférica ou central e 100 indivíduos hígidos compondo o Grupo Controle, de ambos os gêneros, entre 7 a 86 anos. Para a posturografia foi utilizado o equipamento Balance Rehabilitation Unit (BRU TM), da Medicaa®. Foram analisados os parâmetros limite de estabilidade, área de elipse e velocidade de oscilação em dez condições sensoriais. RESULTADOS: A média dos valores do limite de estabilidade, da área de elipse e da velocidade de oscilação do Grupo Experimental foi significativa em relação ao Grupo Controle em todas as condições. A média dos parâmetros do gênero feminino do Grupo Experimental foi significativa em relação ao do Grupo Controle em todas as condições avaliadas. Os pacientes com disfunção vestibular central obtiveram maiores valores que os pacientes com disfunção vestibular periférica nas variáveis área de elipse e velocidade de oscilação, porém menor valor da área do limite de estabilidade. CONCLUSÃO: A posturografia com estímulos de realidade virtual foi um método de avaliação eficaz para detectar alterações relacionadas às variáveis limite de estabilidade, área de elipse e velocidade de oscilação, uma vez que o Grupo Controle obteve melhor desempenho, tanto entre os grupos quanto entre os gêneros. Entre as disfunções vestibulares, os indivíduos com acometimento periférico obtiveram melhor desempenho do que os indivíduos com disfunção vestibular central em todas as variáveis analisadas na posturografia.PURPOSE: To assess body balance and to quantify possible alterations over the static posturography of the Balance Rehabilitation Unit (BRU TM) in patients with vestibular dysfunction. METHODS: Retrospective study, with files of 100 patients with topographic diagnosis of peripheral or central vestibular dysfunction and 100 healthy individuals that composed the control group, of both genders, with ages varying between 7 and 86 years. For the posturography, the Balance Rehabilitation Unit (BRU TM), of Medicaa® was used. The following parameters were analyzed: stability limits, elliptical area, and speed of oscillation in ten sensory conditions. RESULTS: Mean values ​​of the stability limit, the elliptical area and the speed of oscillation in the experimental group was significant when compared to the control group in all conditions. The mean parameters of the female experimental group were significant when compared to the control group in all conditions. Patients with central vestibular dysfunction obtained higher values than patients with peripheral vestibular dysfunction in the variables elliptical area and speed of oscillation, however with lower value of the area of the stability limit. CONCLUSION: Posturography with virtual reality stimuli was an effective assessment method for detecting alterations related to the variables stability limits, elliptical area, and speed of oscillation, since the control group performed better, both between groups and between genders. Among the vestibular dysfunctions, individuals with peripheral condition performed better than those with central vestibular dysfunction in all the variables analyzed on posturography.

A dynamic three-dimensional model was constructed for a half-track tractor that considers its bounce, pitch, and roll motions in order to clarify the tractor’s vibration characteristics. Driving experiments were conducted in which the tractor was driven on a solid asphalt road surface in order to investigate its vibration characteristics and to verify the validity of an analysis based on motion equations that were formulated from the proposed dynamic model. The experiments were conducted with a half-track tractor apparatus equipped with twelve accelerometers for the measurement of 6 DOF of acceleration of the tractor’s centre of gravity. The discrete time series of the measured data was resolved and reconstructed by wavelet analysis. The model was verified using the fixed lug phase difference between the left and the right crawler systems for each combination of three location arrangements of the track rollers and seven levels of tractor speed. Results showed that the acceleration of the centre of gravity for the bounce, pitch, and roll motions was at a minimum when the track rollers were set equidistant from one another. The acceleration caused by the bounce and pitch motions decreased with an increase in the lug phase difference, while the acceleration caused by the roll motion increased with an increase in the lug phase difference. The results further suggested that the proposed three-dimensional dynamic model could be improved by incorporating into it the lug phase differences that change during actual tractor driving, instead of a constant lug phase difference.

The planar cell polarity (PCP) protein, Prickle (Pk), is conserved in invertebrates and vertebrates, and regulates cellular morphogenesis and movement. Vertebrate Pk consists of at least two family members, Pk1 and Pk2, both of which are expressed in the brain; however, their localization and function at synapses remain elusive. Here, we show that Pk2 is expressed mainly in the adult brain and is tightly associated with the postsynaptic density (PSD) fraction obtained by subcellular fractionation. In primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons, Pk2 is colocalized with PSD-95 and synaptophysin at synapses. Moreover, immunoelectron microcopy shows that Pk2 is localized at the PSD of asymmetric synapses in the hippocampal CA1 region. Biochemical assays identified that Pk2 forms a complex with PSD proteins including PSD-95 and NMDA receptor subunits via the direct binding to the C-terminal guanylate kinase domain of PSD-95. These results indicate that Pk2 is a novel PSD protein that interacts with PSD-95 and NMDA receptors through complex formations in the brain.

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodides with alkynylsilanes in the presence of a substoichiometric amount (50 mol %) of copper(I) chloride as an activator in DMF under strictly non-basic reaction conditions afford the corresponding unsymmetrical diarylethynes in moderate to excellent yields. A wide range of substrates bearing an electron-donating or an electron-withdrawing substituent on the aromatic ring are compatible.

CAST and ELKS are major components of the presynaptic active zones of neurons in the central nervous system, but it remains elusive whether CAST and ELKS are also components of synapses in the peripheral nervous system. Here, we have attempted to examine their expression and localization at the synapses of neuromuscular junctions. Immunoreactivity for ELKS is partly colocalized with that for the major neuromuscular junctions marker alpha-bungarotoxin, which binds to acetylcholine receptors. Moreover, another active zone protein, Piccolo, is also present at neuromuscular junctions, together with ELKS, whereas CAST is not found. These results suggest that at least ELKS and Piccolo, but not CAST, are components of neuromuscular junction synapses in the peripheral nervous system.

While studying water quality in the Tatara river, we realized that the river has various hydraulic and topographic characteristics when flowing through different regions. Because of these specific characteristics, the application of the existing models for simulation of its water quality may not be appropriate due to limitations in the models themselves. Therefore, we developed a mathematical model that is suitable for short-term simulations of water quality in rivers with characteristics similar to the Tatara river. The main foundation of the model is the one-dimensional transport equation established on the basis of the mass conservation law. To solve this equation numerically, it was discretized by the method of finite-difference approximations, and an algorithm has been programmed in Fortran 90. To verify the model, the Tatara river was chosen as a case study. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, hydraulic parameters in four typical blocks of the river, and meteorological data of the study area, have been observed and used to test the model. By calibrating the model with different series of data collected from the designated blocks, all results have shown a good fit between simulated data and the observed one. Therefore, the model could be a reliable tool for simulating water quality in medium- and small-sized rivers over a short-term period. This research has also indicated the changing tendencies of water temperature and dissolved oxygen in Tatara river in response to different meteorological patterns over a daily 24-h period. Besides, the model could be improved to simulate other water quality variables, which would be studied further.

We developed nine microsatellite markers for duikers by next-generation sequencing using a muscle tissue sample of blue duiker (Cephalophus monticola). For blue duikers, the number of alleles ranged from 4 to 14 (mean 9.4), and the observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.333–0.833 (mean 0.716) and 0.625–0.878 (mean 0.817), respectively. Cumulative probability of identity was low (1.5 × 10−12), indicating that these markers are enough for individual discrimination. All nine markers were successfully amplified in three other duikers (C. dorsalis, C. ogilbyi and C. sylvicultor), and almost all loci were polymorphic. These markers will be useful for clarifying genetic structure of duikers.

It has recently been proposed that water purification could be performed using aquatic plants, since they absorb nutrient salts. The behavior of a substance in a closed water area is affected by turbulent flows from wind-induced flow, which is a mechanical disturbance, and convective flow, which is a thermal disturbance. In a closed density stratified water area, wind-induced flow gives rise to the entrainment phenomenon at the density interface. This phenomenon, which is based on mixing between the upper and lower water layers, lowers the density interface and so affects the water quality. We experimentally investigated the effect of aquatic plants on the turbulent flow from a mechanical disturbance in the closed water area. Results indicated that the presence of floating and submerged plants had a significant effect on the scale of the turbulent entrainment, and that the entrainment velocity depended on the overall Richardson number to the power of −3/2.

Horizontal and vertical reaction forces of rice and wheat stalks gathered by a combine harvester reel were measured by the experiment system, newly developed in order to clarify dynamic response of the crop stalks related to the gathering performance and to discuss the application of a quasi-static stalk bending analysis to the determination of the reaction force of crop stalks under dynamic loading conditions. The experiment was conducted under five different loading speeds, and the effect of the loading speed on the reaction force was investigated. As the loading speed increased, the horizontal force had a large positive peak value, while the vertical force involved the change in the force direction and had a negative peak value, depending on the initial deflection shape of crop stalks. Thus, the results simulated by the stalk bending analysis involved a large amount of error, and limitations of the analytical method were identified. The experimental results were examined in terms of acceleration at the loading point during the gathering operation. The location of a positive peak in the horizontal reaction force and a negative peak in the vertical one coincided with that of the negative peak in the horizontal acceleration and the positive peak in the vertical one, respectively. These results indicated that the peak values under high loading speeds were due to the effect of the inertial force of the crop stalks. Further, the error in the simulated results under high loading speeds was investigated in terms of the direction of the acceleration force determined by the difference between the simulated and measured values. The direction of the acceleration force coincided with the loading direction during the gathering operation, and the error was shown to be the force required for the accelerated motion.

In this study, the reaction force of a rice stalk undergoing forced displacement was analysed based on a mechanical model of a crop stalk. Horizontal and vertical reaction forces of a single rice stalk undergoing forced displacement were measured. The horizontal force increased linearly for small curvatures of the rice stalk; after that, force increments decreased with displacement due to large curvature of the stalk. The vertical reaction force had different tendencies, depending on the initial shape of the rice stalk. The main reason for the differences was a directional change in friction, depending on the initial shape. An intrinsic shape function of a rice stalk was proposed. An equation of curvature describing rice stalk bending was derived by considering the curvature due to intrinsic shape, and used for analysis of the reaction force. The analytical results coincided fairly well with measured values, and it was demonstrated that the reaction forces of a single rice stalk according to the initial shape was accurately predicted by numerical calculation.

In the present study, the relationships between the deflection and deflection force acting on a bunch of crop stalks in the gathering operations of a combine harvester reel were analysed. Two mechanical crop models based on bending theory with regard to an elastic beam were applied in this analysis. In the first model, the sectional heterogeneity of a stalk is expressed as the different flexural rigidity of each internode. In the second model, the effect of a crop ear is added to the first model. The application of the mechanical models to the reel operations and the analytical methods of the deflection force were investigated using experiments involving reel operations. The results showed that the effect of both the buckling load due to the weight of the ear and the vertical force component acting on the crop stalks increased noticeably with the increment of deflection imposed by the gathering operations. The prediction of the relationships between deflection and deflection force in the second model, in which the effect of the ear weight was considered, involved a certain amount of error due to the effect of the initial posture of the crop stalk and the vertical force component, but coincided approximately with the experimental results. Thus, it was suggested that the model that took into account the effect of the crop ear was useful for investigating reel–crop interactions, and that the analytical accuracy of the deflection force would be increased by considering the effect of the vertical force component. Further, based on the above results, a posture analysis of a bunch of crop stalks during reel operations was conducted.

Chaos synchronization is a phenomenon in which two chaotic subsystems have equal states at each time step. In this paper, a design method is briefly described for unknown input observers used in system theory. Next, a chaos communication method based on design technique that achieves restoration of the information signals by chaos synchronization between a transmitter and a receiver is proposed. Further, with a view to improving the performance of resisting noise, an improved method is proposed by introducing the least-squares method. Alkynylboronates can be employed as a practical and versatile precursor for a variety of pi-conjugated organic compounds. In the presence of Cu(I) salt, cross-coupling reactions of acid chlorides with alkynylboronates giving rise to the corresponding conjugated ynones takes place readily in aprotic polar solvents such as DMI under neutral conditions.

Membrane-associated guanylate kinase (MAGUK) with inverted orientation (MAGI)-1/brain angiogenesis inhibitor 1-associated protein (BAP1), is a member of the MAGUK family that has multiple PDZ domains and interacts with many transmembrane proteins, including receptors and channels, through these domains. MAGI-1/BAP1 is ubiquitously expressed and localized at tight junctions in epithelial cells. It is an isoform of the neurone-specific synaptic scaffolding molecule (S-SCAM), which is known to interact with NMDA receptors and neuroligins. We have recently found that S-SCAM also interacts with a signalling molecule, a GDP/GTP exchange protein (GEP) that is specific for Rap1 small G protein, Rap GEP, which has also recently been referred to as RA-GEF/PDZ-GEFI/CNras-GEF. In this study, we have examined whether MAGI-1/BAP1 also interacts with and serves as a scaffolding molecule for Rap GEP at tight junctions in epithelial cells. MAGI-1/BAP1 similarly interacted with Rap GEP in cell-free and intact cell systems. A Northern blot analysis revealed that Rap GEP was expressed in most tissues examined. However, neither postsynaptic density (PSD)-95/synapse-associated protein (SAP) 90 (another member of the MAGUK family) nor SAP97/human discs-large tumour suppressor gene product (another ubiquitously expressed MAGUK localizing to adherens junctions in epithelial cells and the isoform of PSD-95/SAP90) interacted with Rap GEP. These results indicate that MAGI-1/BAP1 serves as a scaffolding molecule for Rap GEP at tight junctions in epithelial cells.

Background Frabin is an actin filament (F-actin)-binding protein that shows GDP/GTP exchange activity for Cdc42 small G protein (Cdc42). Frabin furthermore induces indirect activation of Rac small G protein (Rac) in intact cells. We have recently shown that in nonepithelial cells, frabin induces the formation of both filopodia- and lamellipodia-like processes through the activation of Cdc42 and Rac, respectively. In epithelial cells such as MDCK cells, Cdc42 and Rac regulate cell-cell adherens junctions (AJs) via the accumulation of F-actin and E-cadherin, although neither Cdc42 nor Rac induces the formation of filopodia or lamellipodia. In this study, we have examined the effects of frabin on the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton in MDCK cells. Results Frabin induces the formation of microspikes at the basal area of the lateral membranes through the activation of Cdc42 and Rac in MDCK cells, although a dominant active mutant of Cdc42 or Rac alone, or both, did not induce the formation of microspikes. Furthermore, frabin weakly increased the accumulation of F-actin and E-cadherin at cell-cell AJs and the formation of stress fibres through the activation of Cdc42 and Rac, under conditions where the dominant active mutant of Cdc42 or Rac markedly showed these effects. The Cdc42- and Rac-induced formation of stress fibres was dependent on the activation of Rho small G protein. Conclusion These results indicate that the frabin-dependent spatial activation of Cdc42 and Rac is important for the formation of microspikes.

The DSSC sub-module of 120 mm 2 which has high temperature durability was fabricated. The durability was tested under 85 °C for 1000 h; at the end of the test the conversion efficiency was retained over 95% of the initial one. The high temperature durability was realized using the improved sealant, protective material of collecting grids and the new ruthenium-complex dye J2 which was developed by SIIT. By the same way the larger size module was developed.

Proteins containing formin homology domains, FH1 and FH2, are involved in cytokinesis or establishment of cell polarity in a variety of organisms. Bni1p and Bnr1p are FH proteins and potential targets of the Rho family small GTP-binding proteins in S. cerevisiae. We have shown that Bnr1p is localized at the bud neck to interact with Hof1p, involved in cytokinesis. We report here that the overexpression of BNR1 causes a cytokinesis deficiency which is similar to the phenotypes of the septin mutants, including cdc3, cdc10, cdc11, and cdc12. The region required for the septin mutant phenotypes was mapped to Bnr1p (35 – 500), which coincided with the region required for the bud-neck localization. To further isolate a gene interacting with BNI1 or BNR1, a multicopy suppressor of the bni1 bnr1 mutant was isolated. This gene encoded Smy1p, a kinesin-related protein. Bnr1p, but not Bni1p, directly interacted with the C-terminal region of Smy1p. The Smy1p-interacting region of Bnr1p was mapped to a region containing the FH2 domain. Bnr1p also directly interacted with Bud6p, a novel actin-binding protein. Bnr1p is thus a multi-functional protein which interacts with the septin system, a microtubule-dependent motor protein, and the actin system, to regulate cytoskeletal functions in S. cerevisiae.

Information on the distribution and abundance of sympatric great apes (Pan troglodytes troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are important for effective conservation and management. Although much research has been done to improve the precision of nest-surveys, trade-offs between data-reliability and research-efficiency have not been solved. In this study, we used different approaches to assess the landscape-scale distribution patterns of great apes. We conducted a conventional nest survey and a camera-trap survey concurrently, and checked the consistency of the estimates. We divided the study area (ca. 500 km²), containing various types of vegetation and topography, into thirty 16-km² grids (4 km × 4 km) and performed both methods along 2-km transects centered in each grid. We determined the nest creator species according to the definitions by TutinFernandez [TutinFernandez, 1984, Am J Primatol 6:313-336] and estimated nest-site densities of each species by using the conventional distance-sampling approach. We calculated the mean capture rate of 3 camera traps left for 3 months at each grid as the abundance index. Our analyses showed that both methods provided roughly consistent results for the distribution patterns of the species; chimpanzee groups (parties) were more abundant in the montane forest, and gorilla groups were relatively homogeneously distributed across vegetation types. The line-transect survey also showed that the number of nests per nest site did not vary among vegetation types for either species. These spatial patterns seemed to reflect the ecological and sociological features of each species. Although the consistent results may be largely dependent on site-specific conditions (e.g., high density of each species, distinct distribution pattern between the two species), conventional nest-surveys and a subsequent check of their consistency with independent estimates may be a reasonable approach to obtain certain information on the species distribution patterns. Further analytical improvement is necessary for camera-traps to be considered a stand-alone method.

Fossils and molecular data are two independent sources of information that should in principle provide consistent inferences of when evolutionary lineages diverged. Here we use an alternative approach to genetic inference of species split times in recent human and ape evolution that is independent of the fossil record. We first use genetic parentage information on a large number of wild chimpanzees and mountain gorillas to directly infer their average generation times. We then compare these generation time estimates with those of humans and apply recent estimates of the human mutation rate per generation to derive estimates of split times of great apes and humans that are independent of fossil calibration. We date the human–chimpanzee split to at least 7–8 million years and the population split between Neanderthals and modern humans to 400,000–800,000 y ago. This suggests that molecular divergence dates may not be in conflict with the attribution of 6- to 7-million-y-old fossils to the human lineage and 400,000-y-old fossils to the Neanderthal lineage.
