The integration of an increasing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) requires the availability of suitable energy storage systems to improve the grid flexibility and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems could be a promising option. In this study, a CO2-free Diabatic CAES system is proposed and analyzed. The plant configuration is derived from a down-scaled version of the McIntosh Diabatic CAES plant, where the natural gas is replaced with green hydrogen, produced on site by a Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzer powered by a photovoltaic power plant. In this study, the components of the hydrogen production system are sized to maximize the self-consumption share of PV energy generation and the effect of the design parameters on the H2-CAES plant performance are analyzed on a yearly basis. Moreover, a comparison between the use of natural gas and hydrogen in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions is discussed. The results show that the proposed hydrogen fueled CAES can effectively match the generation profile and the yearly production of the natural gas fueled plant by using all the PV energy production, while producing zero CO2 emissions. The capability of shifting the electricity generation or consumption to proper time of the day, also defined as energy shift (ES), is the key factor to ensure the power balance, especially under high penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE). However, the ES is not characterized and traded as an independent product in current market mechanisms. In this letter, the marginal utility of an ES is assessed and leveraged to characterize the effective ES, while a novel market scheme is proposed considering the trading of both ES and energy level (EL). The proposed scheme can well integrate ES producers such as virtual power plants that cannot be rewarded sufficiently to actively participate in the current market because they are principally labeled as EL consumers. Finally, the novel concept and mechanism are illustrated by a numerical study and verified to outperform the existing price schemes on integrating the ES resources and VRE.

In the literature, there were studies of Rydberg states of hydrogenic atoms/ions in a high-frequency laser field. It was shown that the motion of the Rydberg electron is analogous to the motion of a satellite around an oblate planet (for a linearly polarized laser field) or around a (fictitious) prolate planet (for a circularly polarized laser field): it exhibits two kinds of precession – one of them is the precession within the orbital plane and another one is the precession of the orbital plane. In this study, we study a helium atom or a helium-like ion with one of the two electrons in a Rydberg state, the system being under a high-frequency laser field. For obtaining analytical results, we use the generalized method of the effective potentials. We find two primary effects of the high-frequency laser field on circular Rydberg states. The first effect is the precession of the orbital plane of the Rydberg electron. We calculate analytically the precession frequency and show that it differs from the case of a hydrogenic atom/ion. In the radiation spectrum, this precession would manifest as satellites separated from the spectral line at the Kepler frequency by multiples of the precession frequency. The second effect is a shift of the energy of the Rydberg electron, also calculated analytically. We find that the absolute value of the shift increases monotonically as the unperturbed binding energy of the Rydberg electron increases. We also find that the shift has a nonmonotonic dependence on the nuclear charge Z: as Z increases, the absolute value of the shift first increases, then reaches a maximum, and then decreases. The nonmonotonic dependence of the laser field-caused energy shift on the nuclear charge is a counterintuitive result.

This theory-building research intends to dig into the renewable energy industry and drawing from research on learning curves and energy polices, proposes a way to speed-up the energy shift from our fossil-fuel dependency to a green economy. Even though standard economic frameworks suggest that markets and not policy makers should decide winners and losers, we urge to accelerate renewable energy competitiveness, proposing that by limiting the number of maturing renewable technologies where resources are allocated to at government level, we reduce the time within which renewables will achieve technological price parity with fossil fuels. In turn, by analyzing the energy demand and supply curves, the study suggests that this action will also mediate the relation between quantity and price, shifting only the supply curve, leaving the demand curve unaffected. It continues by proposing the standardization of a unique renewable energy supply chain model, defined as the SURESC model, relating the indirect effect of limiting the number of maturing technologies to allocate resources, to achieve renewable price-parity with conventional energy sources faster. This is a preliminary theoretical study intended to provide a holistic approach to a known problem.

In paper, using exact solutions of the stationary Schrödinger equation and the equation of motion for an elastic semiconductor medium, using the secondary quantization formalism, the theory of interaction of electrons with acoustic phonons in a multilayer arsenide-based AlAs/GaAlAs resonant tunneling structure is developed. Using the Matsubara Green's functions and the Dyson equation, expressions, which describe the temperature energy shifts of electronic levels in the nanostructure and their decay rates, are established. Direct calculations of the quantities characterizing the interaction of electrons with acoustic phonons are performed on the basis of physical and geometric parameters of a typical nanostructure, and their dependences on the geometric design of the total potential well of the nanosystem at various temperatures are studied. It is shown that the influence of acoustic phonons leads to the decrease in the quantum electronic transitions frequency in the studied nanostructure, and this effect becomes more noticeable with increasing temperature. It has been established that the absolute values of the electronic stationary states temperature shifts decreases with the increase in the electronic stationary level number. Also, an increase in the temperature entails an increase in the electronic states decay rates that is a dissipation effect directly affecting electronic processes in nanostructures. Worldwide environmental policies demand each time more biofuel consumption and less emission. In this context, this work presents a 2G ethanol study as a mean to increase bioethanol production and availability. Currently, technologies use sugarcane bagasse for lignocellulosic ethanol production, which may unbalance the ethanol and sugar mill energy matrix, since bagasse and straw are the main fuel for power and steam generation. A possible solution is using biogas produced from vinasse biodigestion as a fuel instead of using biomass, enabling to shift a fraction of the sugarcane bagasse to 2G ethanol production and, at the same time, keeping power and steam production constant. This paper assesses that energy shift by analyzing ten different scenarios for power generation, comparing the amount of bagasse shifted, the increase in straw consumption, the increase in ethanol production and the reduction of environmental emissions in each scenario. The results show that, at least from the technical and environmental perspective, a combined cycle operating at a high pressure is the best alternative. It is possible to shift from 56.5% to 100% of the available bagasse using the combined cycle technology, which is also followed by an increase in straw consumption. In addition to that, the ethanol availability increase ranges from 28.5 to 50.4%. The atomic intermixing of InxGa1-xAs/InP quantum well structures induced by arsenic irradiation has been investigated using photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The ion doses used were varried from 5x1011 As/cm2 to 1x1013 As/cm2. Also, the irradiation temperature were carried out from -200oC to 300oC. The samples were annealed under Argon flow in rapid thermal annealer (RTA) at 750oC for 60 second. The photoluminescence result showed that there was increase in energy shift at lower doses. However, the energy shift was saturated at higher dose. At elevated temperature implantation showed that the energy shift did not change significantly for all the samples (LM, TS, CS). In additon to this, the higher energy shift was observed in the Compressive Strain (CS) samples, but the lower of the energy shift was experienced in the Tensile Strain (TS) samples

The dispersion law and the anomalous magnetic moment of a neutrino in a magnetized electron-positron plasma are investigated as functions of the magnetic field strength, the polarization state, energy, direction of motion, and mass of the neutrino, and the parameters of the plasma. The calculation was performed by the method of the time Green's functions at finite temperature. In neutron imaging, the beam-hardening effect has a significant effect on quantitative and qualitative image interpretation. This study aims to propose a linearization method for beam-hardening correction. The proposed method is based on a new analytical approach establishing the attenuation coefficient as a function of neutron energy. Spectrum energy shift due to beam hardening is studied on the basis of Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) simulated data and the analytical data. Good agreement between MCNP and analytical values has been found. Indeed, the beam-hardening effect is well supported in the proposed method. A correction procedure is developed to correct the errors of beam-hardening effect in neutron transmission, and therefore for projection data correction. The research presented in this paper is structured on the basis of the extensive literature on the world energy shift and, in particular, the dynamics of the political, social, market, and community acceptability of different energy sources. This study attempts to determine which sources of energy are most accepted or preferred by political systems, public opinion, and the market and the weights that these dynamics of acceptability have on the global energy shift. In this theoretical framework, we present an application and propose a methodology resulting from the integration of two methods: the Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). While Delphi seeks a convergence of opinions among a group of experts, the AHP helps solve complex decision problems using a hierarchical structure. To integrate the Delphi and AHP methods, we propose an innovation in the way the feedbacks are circulated among the participants. The experts' judgements are given in a box-plot using a slider, which simplifies the procedure because the respondents have all the most important information on the distribution of responses from the previous round. At the same time, our method eliminates the problem of the choice of one of the diverse methods of aggregation, which are necessary when the AHP is applied in a group setting. The application of this method to energy issues and the dynamics of the acceptability of the different sources in particular revealed the feasibility and advantages of the instrument and produced interesting results. Simultaneous effects of spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions on the energy spectrum of a two-electron spherical quantum dot with parabolic confinement and under the influence of external electric and magnetic fields are investigated. We have calculated energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the system for different spin states. Results show that effects of spin-spin interactions are negligible in comparison with those of the spin-orbit interactions. Spin-orbit interaction splits energy levels and removes degeneracy of different spin states. Moreover it is seen that energy eigenvalues and levels splitting strongly depend on the external magnetic field and the dot dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Uranium L X-ray absorption edge was measured in various compounds containing uranium in U, U and U oxidation states. The measurements have been carried out at the Energy Dispersive EXAFS beamline (BL-08) at INDUS-2 synchrotron radiation source at RRCAT, Indore. Energy shifts of ~ 2-3 eV were observed for U L edge in the U-compounds compared to their value in elemental U. The different chemical shifts observed for the compounds having the same oxidation state of the cation but different anions or ligands show the effect of different chemical environments surrounding the cations in determining their X-ray absorption edges in the above compounds. • The thermal state of quantum fields is relativistic and observer-dependent and this character can shift the atomic energy levels. • The presence of atomic uniform motion can reinforce or weaken the effect of thermal radiation on the atomic energy shift. • The contribution of radiation reaction is insusceptible to the combined action of thermal bath and uniform motion. • The background thermal bath has no influence on ultra-relativistic atoms. We investigate the implications of an atomic constant velocity in the energy shift of a two-level atom inside the thermal bath of a quantum scalar field, which is described by the Bose-Einstein distribution. The use of DDC formalism shows that the contribution of thermal fluctuations on the atomic level shifts depends on the atomic velocity and the temperature of the heat reservoir but the contribution of radiation reaction is totally insusceptible. The resulting energy shifts are analyzed and examined in detail under different circumstances. The atomic uniform linear motion always broadens the atomic level spacing in the limit of low temperature but narrows down it in the limit of high temperature. Abstract: In this work, X-ray emission lines of the Lα, Lβ, Lγ and Ll groups in elements La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er were studied to examine the influence of 0.6T and 1.2T external magnetic field. The measurements were done using an energy dispersive Si(Li) detector with photon excitation by radioisotopes. A significant dependence of the L X-ray emission lines was observed for Sm but no discernible effect on the Pr Lα/Lγ intensity ratio was observed. Likewise no significant effect of external magnetic field on the various Lα/Ll intensity ratios was observed. For B=0, the results are compared with the theoretical data and experimental results in literature. The results demonstrate that the relative intensities are more susceptible to the external magnetic field than the energy shifts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Mn and Cr K X-ray absorption edges were measured in various compounds containing Mn in Mn, Mn and Mn oxidation states and Cr in Cr and Cr oxidation states. Few compounds possess tetrahedral coordination in the 1st shell surrounding the cation while others possess octahedral coordination. Measurements have been carried out at the energy dispersive EXAFS beamline at INDUS-2 Synchrotron Radiation Source at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore. Energy shifts of ~ 8-16 eV were observed for Mn K edge in the Mn-compounds while a shift of 13-20 eV was observed for Cr K edge in Cr-compounds compared to values in elemental Mn and Cr, respectively. The different chemical shifts observed for compounds having the same oxidation state of the cation but different anions or ligands show the effect of different chemical environments surrounding the cations in determining their X-ray absorption edges in the above compounds. The intercombination line (1s2p(3P1)−1s2) and the resonance line (1s2p(1P1)−1s2) of He-like Mo, which are the two electronic dipole transitions in theKα group emissions, are studied under dense plasma conditions by using the ion–sphere model combined with the multi-configuration Dirac–Fock model. The results show that the two electronic dipole transitions red shift nearly linearly with the increase in plasma electron density. Moreover, the red-shift energy becomes more sensitive to the plasma electron density, when the plasma electron temperature is lower. It is worth to note that the energy discrepancy between these two spectral lines is equal to the exchange energy of state 1s2p (3P1). This result may be useful to dense plasma diagnosis in connection with variation of the relative position and the spectral fine structure splitting in high-density plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The influences of the temperature and the phonons effect on the properties of the exciton, which is strongly coupled with interface optical (IO) phonons and weakly coupled with bulk longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons, in a quantum well are studied by means of Huybrechts' linear-combination operator and the Lee-Low-Pines variational method. The expressions for the induced potential of the ground state, the energy shift of the ground state, and the first internal excited state of the exciton were derived. Numerical results are illustrated for AgBr/AgCl quantum well. The results indicate that the induced potential of the ground state, the energy shift of the ground state, and the energy shift of the first internal excited state of the exciton produced by the exciton strongly coupling with IO phonons increase with increasing temperature; however, the induced potential of the ground state, the energy shift of ground state, and the energy shift of the first internal excited state of the exciton produced by the exciton weakly coupling with bulk LO phonons decrease with increasing temperature. The influence of temperature is greater to the changes of the induced potential and the energy shift of the exciton with well widths and the distances between electron and hole. Hydrogen atom in a cylindrical cavity is the simplest model for describing electronic states of the atom encapsulated into the nanotube. In the present work, simple analytical estimates for the electronic energy change under longitudinal and transversal shifts of the nucleus are made, using the first-order perturbation theory with the radius of the cavity as a perturbation parameter. Abstract: Bulk and nanoscale powders of YAG:Re (Re=Ce, Pr, Tb) were synthesized by solid-state and sol–gel method. The changes of spectra and energy level were studied. Compared with the bulk YAG:Re (Re=Ce, Pr, Tb) crystals, the lattice parameter of YAG:Re (Re=Ce, Pr, Tb) nanocrystals decreases. It is also found that the excitation peaks of 5d energy levels shift in nanocrystals. The physical reason for spectral and energy level changes is a comprehensive result from the shift of energy centroid of the 5d orbit, the Coulomb interaction between 4f and 5d electrons and the crystal field splitting of the 5d energy level. This paper is about adiabatic transport in quantum pumps. The notion of “energy shift,” a self-adjoint operator dual to the Wigner time delay, plays a role in our approach: It determines the current, the dissipation, the noise and the entropy currents in quantum pumps. We discuss the geometric and topological content of adiabatic transport and show that the mechanism of Thouless and Niu for quantized transport via Chern numbers cannot be realized in quantum pumps where Chern numbers necessarily vanish. • L X-ray emission spectra of distinct cerium materials were studied by employing a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer. • CeO 2 material shows less energy shift and vacancy transition probability values comparative to the other materials. • Effective charges and intensity ratios for Ce+4 material were found to be higher than Ce+3 materials. • Relativistic screening constants for 1s 1/2 to 3d 5/2 subshells were evaluated in the current assessment. The current investigation illustrates the systematic interrogation of the energy changes in the L q (q = l, ƞ and α 1,2) X-ray peaks of distinct cerium (Ce) materials by employing a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer. The present work counsel's valuable information for deep insight about the local structure and binding energy effects in distinct cerium materials viz. , CeX [X = Cl 3 , F 3 and O 2 ] and Ce 2 S 3 O 12 on the L q (q = l, ƞ and α 1,2) X-ray lines. The present finding reveals that the L q (q = l, ƞ and α 1,2) X-ray lines emanated from different Ce materials show energy shifts of ~1.67–7.62 eV concerning the pure Ce target. A procedure for estimating measured and calculated radiative L 3 M transition probabilities for distinct Ce materials has been incorporated at present assessment, assuming the different sets of natural line widths for the L -shell hole states, prominent to statistical dissemination of particular initial states. Additionally, the measured values of relative intensity ratios I Q [Q = Ll/Lα 1,2 and Lƞ/Lα 1,2 ] for Ce materials show higher discrepancies relative to pure Ce which can be imitated in the perspective of change in the crystal structures, different electronegativity of the adjacent ligands attached to Ce+3 or Ce+4 ions and influence of outermost screening constants. • Importance of energy shift (or ratchet band) in a solar cell is illustrated here. • Several hetero p-i-n SJ GaAs solar cells are simulated to explain the energy shift. • A detail carrier dynamics of ratchet band is also discussed. • Introduction of energy shift increases the efficiency of SJ cell up to 36%. Intermediate band solar cell (IBSC) uses the below bandgap photons to minimise the spectral losses and to overcome the thermodynamical efficiency barrier for single junction solar cell set by Shockley and Queisser. With several practical constraints the IBSC is incapable to reach that thermodynamic barrier. Among them, increased recombination (both radiative and non-radiative) is a notable one, which significantly deteriorates the open-circuit voltage. In this paper a single junction GaAs PIN solar cell is proposed, where an InGaAs/GaAs hetero i-layer is introduced to the i-region. Inclusion of this i-layer reduces the transmission losses effectively by introducing an energy shift. This energy shift decouples the valence band form the intermediate band (IB), resulting an improvement in the carrier life time of electron hole pairs in the IB. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) synthesized from tartaric acid and triethylenetetramine showed potential for the detection of Cr6+, Co2+ and Cu2+ in aqueous solution, with the most effective sensing being based on fluorescence quenching for Co2+. A good linear relationship between the concentration of Co2+ and the relative fluorescent intensity was obtained at 1.7–167.7 μM (R2 = 0.9993) with a limit of detection at 0.94 μM. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to examine the absorbed transition metal ions on the CDs. Measurements were carried out at Beamline 8, Synchrotron Light Research Institute, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Cr, Co, and Cu K -edges were measured in various standard compounds containing different oxidation states. An energy shift of 12.49 eV in the absorption of the Co K -edge was observed from elemental Co0 to Co2+, 3+, while shifts of 17.96 eV and 5.45 eV were observed for elemental Cr0 to Cr6+ and elemental Cu0 to Cu2+, respectively. A small decrease in edge energy of the Cr K -edge XAS spectra compared to standard compounds with the LCF results suggested two forms of Cr6+ found in Cr sorption on carbon dots while a mix of Cu1+ and Cu2+ was found in Cu sorption on carbon dots. Interestingly, an increase in edge energy of Co K -edge was observed for Co sorption on carbon dots compared to +2 oxidation state compounds, suggesting that metal species transform to a higher positive charge during binding to CDs. Cobalt species might participate in the formation of a chemical bond with functional groups existing on the surface of CDs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed the results from XAS. • CDs with amino and carboxyl groups have been prepared to detect ions. • CDs have been employed in the detection of Co with a low LOD. • Oxidation states of metal ions binding on CDs have been distinguished by XAS. This study analyzes emissions pathways and mitigation potentials of greenhouse gases (GHGs), air-pollution and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), while taking mitigation actions for achieving a 2 °C global temperature change limit above pre-industrial levels, so-called "2 °C target." The study evaluates SLCPs (i.e. BC, CH 4 , tropospheric O 3) mitigation scenarios by considering synergies and tradeoffs of various combinations of low-carbon measures and air pollutants control measures. It was found that, even if CO 2 emissions pathways in this study are all similar to achieve the 2 °C target, reaching a carbon price at around 400 US$/tCO 2 eq. in 2050, SLCPs and air pollutants emissions pathways and mitigation potentials are largely influenced by combinations of some key mitigation measures. The maximum mitigation potential reductions of SLCPs (BC, CH 4) and air pollutants (NOx, CO, NMVOC, which are precursors of tropospheric O 3) in Asia are 89%, 22%, 67%, 37%, and 11% respectively by 2050 compared to the 2010 levels. After considering both direct SLCP reduction effects (i.e. mitigating BC, CH 4) and indirect SLCP reduction effects (i.e. mitigating NOx, CO, NMVOC for reducing tropospheric O 3 generation and atmospheric CH 4 concentration), it can be adjudged that combinations of widespread promotion of renewable energies, drastic electrification in transport, residential and commercial sectors, high biofuel shares in the transport sector, and a certain level of deployment of removal devices would be effective SLCP mitigation scenarios.
