Search

Supernovae (SNe) are luminous optical transients, which, despite being rare events in a single galaxy, nowadays are discovered at a rate of ten per day. They populate a growing zoo of different types linked to a variety of progenitors and explosion mechanisms. Through a biased selection of a century of researches, I will review how SNe have became a leading tool to probe the cosmic expansion. I will mainly focus on SNe of type Ia, originating from the thermonuclear explosion of white dwarfs, that were demonstrated to be excellent distance indicators after proper calibration and standardisation. Two decades ago, SNe Ia provided the surprising result that the cosmic expansion is accelerated by a misterious dark energy. Recently, with the decisive contribution of Cepheids variables as primary distance indicators, SN Ia allowed to measure the value of the Hubble-Lemaître constant, $$H_0$$ H 0 , with an error of only 1%. It turned out that the value of $$H_0$$ H 0 based on SNe Ia is in tension with the one measured through the fit of the CMB fluctuations. If confirmed, this finding requires a deep revision of the standard cosmological model.

The discovery of the GW signal from the merging of two neutron stars (GW170817) and the detection of related electromagnetic radiations, namely a short GRB, an optical transient (kilonova) and a late afterglow emission at X-ray and radio wavelengths, opened the new era of multi-messenger astrophysics. I will briefly review the history of this discovery with an emphasis on the results of the optical/near-infrared follow-up. The lesson learned is used to get prepared for the forthcoming LIGO/Virgo runs.

We present results of the photometric (from 3 to 509 days past explosion) and spectroscopic (up to 230 days past explosion) monitoring campaign of the He-rich Type IIb supernova (SN) 2015as. The {\it (B-V)} colour evolution of SN 2015as closely resemble those of SN 2008ax, suggesting that SN 2015as belongs to the SN IIb subgroup that does not show the early, short-duration photometric peak. The light curve of SN 2015as reaches the $B$-band maximum about 22 days after the explosion, at an absolute magnitude of -16.82 $\pm$ 0.18 mag. At $\sim$ 75 days after the explosion, its spectrum transitions from that of a SN II to a SN Ib. P~Cygni features due to He I lines appear at around 30 days after explosion, indicating that the progenitor of SN 2015as was partially stripped. For SN~2015as, we estimate a $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim$ 0.08 M$_{\odot}$ and ejecta mass of 1.1--2.2 M$_{\odot}$, which are similar to the values inferred for SN 2008ax. The quasi bolometric analytical light curve modelling suggests that the progenitor of SN 2015as has a modest mass ($\sim$ 0.1 M$_{\odot}$), a nearly-compact ($\sim$ 0.05$\times$10$^{13}$ cm) H envelope on top of a dense, compact ($\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{11}$ cm) and a more massive ($\sim$ 1.2 M$_{\odot}$) He core. The analysis of the nebular phase spectra indicates that $\sim$ 0.44 M$_{\odot}$ of O is ejected in the explosion. The intensity ratio of the [Ca II]/[O I] nebular lines favours either a main sequence progenitor mass of $\sim$ 15 M$_{\odot}$ or a Wolf Rayet star of 20 M$_{\odot}$., 23 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 February, 2018

SNhunt151 was initially classified as a supernova (SN) impostor (nonterminal outburst of a massive star). It exhibited a slow increase in luminosity, lasting about 450 d, followed by a major brightening that reaches M_V ~ -18 mag. No source is detected to M_V > -13 mag in archival images at the position of SNhunt151 before the slow rise. Low-to-mid-resolution optical spectra obtained during the pronounced brightening show very little evolution, being dominated at all times by multicomponent Balmer emission lines, a signature of interaction between the material ejected in the new outburst and the pre-existing circumstellar medium. We also analyzed mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope, detecting a source at the transient position in 2014 and 2015. Overall, SNhunt151 is spectroscopically a Type IIn SN, somewhat similar to SN2009ip. However, there are also some differences, such as a slow pre-discovery rise, a relatively broad light-curve peak showing a longer rise time (~ 50 d) and a slower decline, along with a negligible change in the temperature around the peak (T < 10^4 K). We suggest that SNhunt151 is the result of an outburst, or a SN explosion, within a dense circumstellar nebula, similar to those embedding some luminous blue variables like Eta Carinae and originating from past mass-loss events., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages with 10 tables and 11 figures

In this letter we present an optical spectrum of SN 2011fe taken 1034 d after the explosion, several hundred days later than any other spectrum of a Type Ia supernova (disregarding light-echo spectra and local-group remnants). The spectrum is still dominated by broad emission features, with no trace of a light echo or interaction of the supernova ejecta with surrounding interstellar material. Comparing this extremely late spectrum to an earlier one taken 331 d after the explosion, we find that the most prominent feature at 331 d - [Fe III] emission around 4700 A - has entirely faded away, suggesting a significant change in the ionisation state. Instead, [Fe II] lines are probably responsible for most of the emission at 1034 d. An emission feature at 6300-6400 A has newly developed at 1034 d, which we tentatively identify with Fe I {\lambda}6359, [Fe I] {\lambda}{\lambda}6231, 6394 or [O I] {\lambda}{\lambda}6300, 6364. Interestingly, the features in the 1034-d spectrum seem to be collectively redshifted, a phenomenon that we currently have no convincing explanation for. We present the compilation of the first 221 supernovae classified during the Asiago Classification Program (ACP). The details of transients classification and the preliminarily reduced spectra, in fits format, are immediately posted on the Padova-Asiago SN group web site. The achieved performances for the first 2 years of the ACP are analysed, showing that half of all our classifications were made within 5 days from transient detection. The distribution of the supernova types of this sample resembles the distribution of the general list of all the supernovae listed in the Asiago SN catalog (ASNC, Barbon et al. 1999). Finally, we use our subsample of 78 core-collapse supernovae, for which we retrieve the host-galaxy morphology and r -band absolute magnitudes, to study the observed subtype distribution in dwarf compared to giant galaxies. This ongoing program will give its contribution to the classification of the large number of transients that will be soon delivered by the Gaia mission. (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present optical photometry and spectra of the super luminous type II/IIn supernova CSS121015:004244+132827 (z=0.2868) spanning epochs from -30 days (rest frame) to more than 200 days after maximum. CSS121015 is one of the more luminous supernova ever found and one of the best observed. The photometric evolution is characterized by a relatively fast rise to maximum (~40 days in the SN rest frame), and by a linear post-maximum decline. The light curve shows no sign of a break to an exponential tail. A broad Halpha is first detected at ~ +40 days (rest-frame). Narrow, barely-resolved Balmer and [O III] 5007 A lines, with decreasing strength, are visible along the entire spectral evolution. The spectra are very similar to other super luminous supernovae (SLSNe) with hydrogen in their spectrum, and also to SN 2005gj, sometimes considered a type Ia interacting with H-rich CSM. The spectra are also similar to a subsample of H-deficient SLSNe. We propose that the properties of CSS121015 are consistent with the interaction of the ejecta with a massive, extended, opaque shell, lost by the progenitor decades before the final explosion, although a magnetar powered model cannot be excluded. Based on the similarity of CSS121015 with other SLSNe (with and without H), we suggest that the shocked-shell scenario should be seriously considered as a plausible model for both types of SLSN., 17 pages, 10 figures and 5 tables. We present new optical and near infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the type IIP supernova, SN 2004et. In combination with already published data, this provides one of the most complete studies of optical and NIR data for any type IIP SN from just after explosion to +500 days. The contribution of the NIR flux to the bolometric light curve is estimated to increase from 15% at explosion to around 50% at the end of the plateau and then declines to 40% at 300 days. SN 2004et is one of the most luminous IIP SNe which has been well studied, and with a luminosity of log L = 42.3 erg/s, it is 2 times brighter than SN 1999em. We provide parametrised bolometric corrections as a function of time for SN 2004et and three other IIP SNe that have extensive optical and NIR data, which can be used as templates for future events. We compare the physical parameters of SN 2004et with those of other IIP SNe and find kinetic energies spanning the range of 10^50-10^51 ergs. We compare the ejected masses calculated from hydrodynamic models with the progenitor masses and limits derived from prediscovery images. Some of the ejected mass estimates are significantly higher than the progenitor mass estimates, with SN 2004et showing perhaps the most serious mass discrepancy. With current models, it appears difficult to reconcile 100 day plateau lengths and high expansion velocities with the low ejected masses of 5-6 Msun implied from 7-8 Msun progenitors. The nebular phase is studied using very late time HST photometry, along with optical and NIR spectroscopy. The light curve shows a clear flattening at 600 days in the optical and the NIR, which is likely due to the ejecta impacting on the CSM. We further show that the [Oi] 6300,6364 Angstrom line strengths of four type IIP SNe imply ejected oxygen masses of 0.5-1.5 Msun.

In order to assess qualitatively the ejecta geometry of stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae, we investigate 98 late-time spectra of 39 objects, many of them previously unpublished. We perform a Gauss-fitting of the [O I] 6300, 6364 feature in all spectra, with the position, full width at half maximum (FWHM) and intensity of the 6300 Gaussian as free parameters, and the 6364 Gaussian added appropriately to account for the doublet nature of the [O I] feature. On the basis of the best-fit parameters, the objects are organised into morphological classes, and we conclude that at least half of all Type Ib/c supernovae must be aspherical. Bipolar jet-models do not seem to be universally applicable, as we find too few symmetric double-peaked [O I] profiles. In some objects the [O I] line exhibits a variety of shifted secondary peaks or shoulders, interpreted as blobs of matter ejected at high velocity and possibly accompanied by neutron-star kicks to assure momentum conservation. At phases earlier than ~200d, a systematic blueshift of the [O I] 6300, 6364 line centroids can be discerned. Residual opacity provides the most convincing explanation of this phenomenon, photons emitted on the rear side of the SN being scattered or absorbed on their way through the ejecta. Once modified to account for the doublet nature of the oxygen feature, the profile of Mg I] 4571 at sufficiently late phases generally resembles that of [O I] 6300, 6364, suggesting negligible contamination from other lines and confirming that O and Mg are similarly distributed within the ejecta., 18 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS; references added

The only supernovae (SNe) to have shown early gamma-ray or X-ray emission thus far are overenergetic, broad-lined Type Ic SNe (Hypernovae - HNe). Recently, SN 2008D shows several novel features: (i) weak XRF, (ii) an early, narrow optical peak, (iii) disappearance of the broad lines typical of SNIc HNe, (iv) development of He lines as in SNeIb. Detailed analysis shows that SN 2008D was not a normal SN: its explosion energy (KE ~ 6*10^{51} erg) and ejected mass (~7 Msun) are intermediate between normal SNeIbc and HNe. We derive that SN 2008D was originally a ~30Msun star. When it collapsed a black hole formed and a weak, mildly relativistic jet was produced, which caused the XRF. SN 2008D is probably among the weakest explosions that produce relativistic jets. In this paper we present and discuss the effects of scattered light echoes (LE) on the luminosity and spectral appearance of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe). After introducing the basic concepts of LE spectral synthesis, by means of LE models and real observations we investigate the deviations from pure SN spectra, light and colour curves, the signatures that witness the presence of a LE and the possible inferences on the extinction law. The effects on the photometric parameters and spectral features are also discussed. In particular, for the case of circumstellar dust, LEs are found to introduce an apparent relation between the post-maximum decline rate and the absolute luminosity which is most likely going to affect the well known Pskowski-Phillips relation.

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 2003cg, which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3169. The observations cover a period between -8.5 and +414 days post-maximum. SN 2003cg is a normal but highly-reddened Type Ia event. Its B magnitude at maximum B_max = 15.94+/-0.04 and Delta m_15(B)_obs = 1.12+/-0.04 (Delta m_15(B)_intrinsic = 1.25+/-0.05). Allowing R_v to become a free parameter within the Cardelli et al. (1989) extinction law, simultaneous matches to a range of colour curves of normal SNe Ia yielded E(B-V) = 1.33+/-0.11, and R_v = 1.80+/-0.19. While the value obtained for R_v is small, such values have been invoked in the past, and may imply a grain size which is small compared with the average value for the local ISM.

We investigate how a different calibration of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation taking into account the metallicity corrections, affects the absolute magnitude calibration of Supernovae (SNe) Ia and, in turn, the determination of the Hubble constant H_0. We exploit SN Ia light curves from literature and previously unpublished data, to build the M_B -- Delta m_{15}(B) relation and we calibrate the zero point by means of 9 type Ia SNe with Cepheid measured distances. This relation was then used to build the Hubble diagram and in turn to derive H_0. In the attempt to correct for the host galaxy extinction, we found that the data seems to suggest a value for the total to selective absorption ratio, R_B=3.5, which is smaller than the standard value for our own Galaxy R_B=4.315. Depending on different metallicity corrections for the Cepheids P-L relation, values of R_B and SN sample selection criteria, we found that the values of the Hubble constant H_0 is in the range 68--74 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, with associated uncertainties of the order of 10%. Unpublished photometry is also presented for 18 SNe of our sample (1991S, 1991T, 1992A, 1992K, 1993H, 1993L, 1994D, 1994M, 1994ae, 1995D, 1995ac, 1995bd, 1996bo, 1997bp, 1997br, 1999aa, 1999dk, 2000cx), which are the results of a long standing effort for supernova monitoring at ESO - La Silla and Asiago Observatories., 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we present spectroscopic and photometric observations for four core collapse supernovae (SNe), namely SNe 1994N, 1999br, 1999eu and 2001dc. Together with SN 1997D, we show that they form a group of exceptionally low-luminosity events. These SNe have narrow spectral lines (indicating low expansion velocities) and low luminosities at every phase (significantly lower than those of typical core-collapse supernovae). The very low luminosity during the ^{56}Co radioactive decay tail indicates that the mass of ^{56}Ni ejected during the explosion is much smaller (M(Ni) ~ 2-8 x 10^{-3} Mo) than the average (M(Ni) ~ 6-10 x 10^{-2} Mo). Two supernovae of this group (SN 1999br and SN 2001dc) were discovered very close to the explosion epoch, allowing us to determine the lengths of their plateaux (~ 100 days) as well as establishiing the explosion epochs of the other, less-completely observed SNe. It is likely that this group of SNe represent the extreme low-luminosity tail of a single continuous distribution of SN II-P events. Their kinetic energy is also exceptionally low. Although an origin from low mass progenitors has also been proposed for low-luminosity core-collapse SNe, recent work provides evidence in favour of the high mass progenitor scenario. Detailed optical and near–IR observations of SN 1999E have confirmed early suggestions that this supernova was indeed a twin of the peculiar type II SN 1997cy: it was exceptionally luminous and had evolved slowly, and the line profiles had narrow peaks and broad wings, indicating interaction with the circumstellar material. Nevertheless, the most intriguing characteristic was that, in analogy to SN 1997cy, it exploded at a position consistent in time and location with a BATSE event (GRB980910). The ”a posteriori” probability that the only two SNe with such an optical appearance are associated with two different BATSE GRB is only 0.2%. This raises the possibility that some GRB are associated with H–rich SNe.

We present photometry and spectra of the type IIP SN1999em in NGC 1637 from several days after the outburst till day 642. An amount of $\approx 0.02 M_{\odot}$ of ejected $^{56}$Ni is inferred using the recovered bolometric light curve . The H$\alpha$ and He I 10830 \AA lines at the nebular epoch show that the distribution of the bulk of $^{56}$Ni can be represented approximately by a sphere of $^{56}$Ni with a velocity of 1500 km s$^{-1}$, which is shifted towards the far hemisphere by about 400 km s$^{-1}$. The fine structure of the H$\alpha$ at the photospheric epoch reminiscent of the "Bochum event" in SN 1987A is analysed . The late time spectra show a dramatic transformation of the [O I] 6300 \AA line profile between days 465 and 510, which we interpret as an effect of dust condensation during this period. Late time photometry supports the dust formation scenario after day 465. The [O I] line profile suggests that the dust occupies a sphere with velocity $\approx 800$ km s$^{-1}$ and optical depth $\gg10$. The plateau brightness and duration combined with the expansion velocity suggest a presupernova radius of $120-150 R_{\odot}$, ejecta mass of $10-11 M_{\odot}$ and explosion energy of $(0.5-1)\times10^{51}$ erg. The ejecta mass combined with the neutron star and a conservative assumption about mass loss implies the main sequence progenitor of $M_{\rm ms}\approx 12-14 M_{\odot}$. From the [O I] 6300,6364 \AA doublet luminosity we infer the oxygen mass to be a factor four lower than in SN 1987A which is consistent with the estimated SN 1999em progenitor mass . We note a "second-plateau" behaviour of the light curve after the main plateau at the beginning of the radioactive tail. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Type Ib Supernova 1991D are presented. SN 1991D was exceptionally bright for a Type Ib supernova. The He I lines were rather weak and the velocity at the photosphere as a function of time was unusually low. Comparison of the observed and synthetic spectra indicates that either hydrogen was ejected with a minimum velocity of 12,000 km/s or the spectrum contained features caused by lines of Ne I. Light curve modelling suggests that the progenitor probably had a very large radius (~10^14 cm) and that a considerable amount of 56Ni was synthesized during the explosion (~0.7 Msolar). We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the type IIn SN 1995G in NGC 1643, on the basis of 4 years of optical and infrared observations. This supernova shows very flat optical light curves similar to SN 1988Z, with a slow decline rate at all times. The spectra are characterized by strong Balmer lines with multiple components in emission and with a P Cygni absorption component blueshifted by only 700kms-1. This feature indicates the presence of a slowly expanding shell above the SN ejecta as in the case of SNe 1994aj and 1996L. As in other SNe IIn, the slow luminosity decline cannot be explained only with a radioactive energy input, and an additional source of energy is required, most likely that produced by the interaction between supernova ejecta and a pre-existent circumstellar medium (CSM). It was estimated that the shell material has a density nH>>108cm-3, consistent with the absence of forbidden lines in the spectra. About 2 years after the burst the low-velocity shell is largely overtaken by the SN ejecta and the luminosity drops at a faster rate.

We present a new set of spectroscopic and photometric data extending the observations of SN 1997D to over 400 days after the explosion. These observations confirm the peculiar properties of SN 1997D, such as the very low abundance of 56Co (0.002 Msolar) and the low expansion velocity of the ejecta (~1000 km/s). We discuss the implications of these observations for the character of the progenitor and the nature of the remnant showing that a Crab-like pulsar or an accreting neutron star formed in the explosion of a low mass progenitor should already have produced a detectable luminosity at this epoch, in contrast with photometric data. On the other hand, the explosion of a high mass progenitor with the formation of a black hole is consistent with the available observations. The consequences of this conclusion regarding the nature of the explosion and the prospects of directly identifying the black hole are also addressed.

The Supernova Working Group was re-established at the IAU XXV General Assembly in Sydney, 21 July 2003, sponsored by Commissions 28 (Galaxies) and 47 (Cosmology). Here we report on some of its activities since 2005.

Type Ia supernovae are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of accreting white dwarfs that reach a critical mass limit. Despite their importance as cosmological distance indicators, the nature of their progenitors has remained controversial. Here we report the detection of circumstellar material in a normal Type Ia supernova. The expansion velocities, densities and dimensions of the circumstellar envelope indicate that this material was ejected from the progenitor system. The relatively low expansion velocities appear to favor a progenitor system where a white dwarf accretes material from a companion star which is in the red-giant phase at the time of explosion., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. Observations of the recent SN 1991bg in the elliptical galaxy NGC 5490 show that this objects closely resembles, both photometrically and spectroscopically, the faint SNIa 1991bg. The two objects have similar light curves, which do not show secondary maxima in the near IR as normal type Ia supernovae. The host galaxy, NGC5490, lies in the Hubble flow. Adopting for SN1997cn a reddening E(B-V)=0, the absolute magnitude is faint: MV = -17.98 using Ho=65 and MV = -17.40 using Ho=85 km/(s Mpc). The latter value is in close agreement with the absolute magnitude of SN 1991bg on the SBF--PNLF--TF distance scale. The photospheric spectra of the two SNe show the same peculiarities, the deep TiII trough between 4000 and 4500A, the strong CaII IR triplet, the narrow absorption at about 5700A and the slow expansion velocity. In analogy to SN 1991bg the observed spectrum of SN1997cn has been successfully modeled by scaling down the W7 model by a factor of 2, assuming a rise time to B maximum of 18 days, a photospheric velocity and an effective temperature low compared to normal SNIa. The influence of the distance scale adopted on the input parameters of the best fit model is also discussed. These data demonstrate that peculiar SNIa like SN 1991bg are not once--in--a--lifetime events and that deep SN searches can be contaminated by underluminous SN Ia in a fairly large volume.

Extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN1994aj until 540d after maximum light have been obtained. The photometry around maximum suggests that the SN belongs to the Type II Linear class, with a peak absolute magnitude of Mv ~ -17.8 (assuming Ho=75 km/s/Mpc). The spectra of SN1994aj were unusual with the presence of a narrow line with a P-Cygni profile on the top of the broad Balmer line emission. This narrow feature is attributed to the presence of a dense superwind surrounding the SN. At 100-120 days after maximum light the SN ejecta starts to interact with this CSM. The SN luminosity decline rates slowed down (gamma_R=0.46 mag/100d), becoming less steep than the average late luminosity decline of normal SNII (~1 mag/100d). This dense (Mdot/u_w ~ 10^15 g/cm) wind was confined to a short distance from the progenitor (R_out ~ 5x10^16 cm), and results from a very strong mass loss episode (Mdot = 10^-3 Msun/yr), which terminated shortly before explosion (~5-10 yr)., Comment: 9 pages (Latex file) including 4 tables, 8 eps figures. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with type Ic supernovae that are more luminous than average and that eject material at very high velocities. Less-luminous supernovae were not hitherto known to be associated with GRBs, and therefore GRB-supernovae were thought to be rare events. Whether X-ray flashes - analogues of GRBs, but with lower luminosities and fewer gamma-rays - can also be associated with supernovae, and whether they are intrinsically 'weak' events or typical GRBs viewed off the axis of the burst, is unclear. Here we report the optical discovery and follow-up observations of the type Ic supernova SN 2006aj associated with X-ray flash XRF 060218. Supernova 2006aj is intrinsically less luminous than the GRB-supernovae, but more luminous than many supernovae not accompanied by a GRB. The ejecta velocities derived from our spectra are intermediate between these two groups, which is consistent with the weakness of both the GRB output and the supernova radio flux. Our data, combined with radio and X-ray observations, suggest that XRF 060218 is an intrinsically weak and soft event, rather than a classical GRB observed off-axis. This extends the GRB-supernova connection to X-ray flashes and fainter supernovae, implying a common origin. Events such as XRF 060218 are probably more numerous than GRB-supernovae., Final published version
