Background: Children's eye disorders are a major cause of irreversible vision loss. Delays in diagnosing eye problems in children are recurring problems that require quick attention. This study assesses parents' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the early ophthalmological screening of preschool-aged children in Jazan, KSA. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 522 parents of preschool-aged children in the Jazan region. A self-administered web-based questionnaire was randomly distributed to the parents via WhatsApp. The survey tool consisted of four main sections: socio-demographic data, knowledge about eye care, attitudes toward eye screening, and eye care practices. Results: Parents' level of knowledge regarding children's eye care was distributed as follows: low (21.5%), medium (40.2%), and high (38.4%). Parent gender, age, occupation, level of income, and nationality showed no statistically significant association with the knowledge level (p > 0.05 for all). However, parent education played a significant role (p = 0.013). Further, parents expressed a positive attitude toward the early screening of eye problems, as more than 90% agreed that early eye examinations for children reduce complications from visual problems and that the increased use of electronic devices requires early eye examinations. Almost 47.0% of the parents had examined their children's eyes when they were between 1 and 5 years of age, compared with only 10.3% of parents of children less than 1 year of age. The multiple linear regression model for factors that predict knowledge level among the study participants showed that having a child undergo early screening is positively associated with an increased knowledge score (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Jazan parents showed a positive attitude toward the early screening of eye problems, and one-third had a high level of knowledge regarding children's eye care. However, the proportion of those who practiced early eye screening was low. More health education is necessary to increase parents' awareness regarding early eye care practices. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the generalizability of an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm trained on an ethnically diverse dataset to screen for referable diabetic retinopathy (RDR) in the Armenian population unseen during AI development. Methods: This study comprised 550 patients with diabetes mellitus visiting the polyclinics of Armenia over 10 months requiring diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening. The Medios AI-DR algorithm was developed using a robust, diverse, ethnically balanced dataset with no inherent bias and deployed offline on a smartphone-based fundus camera. The algorithm here analyzed the retinal images captured using the target device for the presence of RDR (i.e., moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and/or clinically significant diabetic macular edema (CSDME) or more severe disease) and sight-threatening DR (STDR, i.e., severe NPDR and/or CSDME or more severe disease). The results compared the AI output to a consensus or majority image grading of three expert graders according to the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy severity scale. Results: On 478 subjects included in the analysis, the algorithm achieved a high classification sensitivity of 95.30% (95% CI: 91.9%–98.7%) and a specificity of 83.89% (95% CI: 79.9%–87.9%) for the detection of RDR. The sensitivity for STDR detection was 100%. Conclusion: The study proved that Medios AI-DR algorithm yields good accuracy in screening for RDR in the Armenian population. Introduction: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) play a crucial role as safety-net primary health care clinics in the United States, serving medically underserved areas and populations. However, eye services are rarely offered at FQHCs. We examined how telemedicine-generated ocular diagnoses impacted vision-targeted health-related quality of life at FQHCs in rural Alabama. Methods: We focused on patients who are at risk for glaucoma. Both visual function and retinal imaging were assessed. The telemedicine vision screening protocol performed by a remote ophthalmologist evaluated eyes for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and a measurement of habitual visual acuity. The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire–9 (VFQ-9) was administered. Results: Using stepwise regression, the best-fitting model for predicting VFQ-9 scores incorporated visual acuity 20/40 or worse, a diabetic retinopathy diagnosis, and sociodemographic variables (gender, transportation, insurance type/status, and employment status). Conclusion: Vision-targeted, health-related quality of life in our FQHC settings was related to the visual acuity impairment and the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy but was also influenced by a variety of sociodemographic factors. Abstract Background Among older people undiagnosed and untreated vision impairment and blindness are common. The leading causes are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts. Vision problems are associated with a lower quality of life, several health problems, and a higher chance of falling accidents and fractures. To eliminate avoidable vision impairment and blindness, targeted eye screening programs are recommended. Older patients, receiving home healthcare, have not yet been considered as a population at risk who could benefit from eye screening. Methods A cluster-randomized controlled trial will be conducted to investigate the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of online nurse-assisted eye screening in home healthcare, compared to care as usual, in reducing avoidable vision impairment. A healthcare and societal perspective will be used. The study will be performed in collaboration with several home healthcare organizations in the Netherlands. The online eye screening consists of near and distance visual acuity, followed by an Amsler grading test. Measurements in both groups will take place at baseline and after 6 and 12 months of follow-up. A total of 240 participants will be recruited. Older men and women (65 +), who receive home-based nursing and are cognitively able to participate, will be included. The primary outcome will be the change of two lines or more on the Colenbrander-1 M visual acuity chart between baseline and 12-month follow-up. Discussion An eye screening for populations at risk contributes to the detection of undiagnosed and untreated vision impairment. This may reduce the health-related consequences of vision loss and the high economic burden associated with vision impairment. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06058637. Purpose: Timely diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is important in preventing vision loss. This study aims to determine if remote retinal imaging enables earlier eye care access among newly-diagnosed diabetic patients. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: Using the OptumLabs® Data Warehouse – a longitudinal, real-world dataset containing deidentified administrative claims and electronic health record (EHR) data, we included 968 846 adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and at least 1 year of continuous enrollment. We compared time from initial diabetes diagnosis to first eye exam by remote screening or in-person eye exam. Results: We found that at year 1 after diagnosis, 5459 (0.56%) patients underwent remote imaging and 208 023 (21.5%) underwent in-person exam. Abstract Background Refraction is one of the key components of a comprehensive eye examination. Auto refractometers that are reliable and affordable can be beneficial, especially in a low-resource community setting. The study aimed to validate the accuracy of a novel wave-front aberrometry-based auto refractometer, Instaref R20 against the open-field system and subjective refraction in an adult population. Methods All the participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination including objective refraction, subjective acceptance, anterior and posterior segment evaluation. Refraction was performed without cycloplegia using WAM5500 open-field auto refractometer (OFAR) and Instaref R20, the study device. Agreement between both methods was evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis. The repeatability of the device based on three measurements in a subgroup of 40 adults was assessed. Results The refractive error was measured in 132 participants (mean age,30.53 ± 9.36 years, 58.3% female). The paired mean difference of the refraction values of the study device against OFAR was − 0.13D for M, − 0.0002D (J0) and − 0.13D (J45) and against subjective refraction (SR) was − 0.09D (M), 0.06 (J0) and 0.03D (J45). The device agreed within +/− 0.50D of OFAR in 78% of eyes for M, 79% for J0 and 78% for J45. The device agreed within +/− 0.5D of SR values for M (84%), J0 (86%) and J45 (89%). Conclusion This study found a good agreement between the measurements obtained with the portable autorefractor against open-field refractometer and SR values. It has a potential application in population-based community vision screening programs for refractive error correction without the need for highly trained personnel.

AIM: To identify associated factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening and ey e check-up practice among diabetes mellitus (DM) patients attending Felege Hiwot Specialized Hospital. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study was applied from October 4, 2019 to January 12, 2020 at Felege Hiwot Specialized Hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was used to recruit participants and an interviewer-administered questionnaire was employed to collect the data. The collected data were entered into Epi Info version 7 and transposed to SPSS version 24 for statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics were executed and associated factors were identified using binary logistic regression. The strength of association between the independent and the outcome variable was determined using an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Four hundred and six participants partake with a response rate of 95.7% and a mean age of 47±11.5y. The magnitude of DR screening was 308 (75.9%, 95%CI: 71.5%, 79.8%). Higher educational level (AOR=3.25; 95%CI: 1.40, 8.78), good knowledge of DR (AOR=2.50; 95%CI: 1.55, 4.46), and family history of DM (AOR=2.15; 95%CI: 1.41, 3.85) were significantly associated with DR screening. On the other side, rural residence [AOR=3.11 (1.89, 5.02)] and undesirable attitudes toward DR [AOR=5.65 (3.14, 8.76)] were significantly associated with poor regular eye checkup practice. CONCLUSION: Most of the participants are screened for DR. Higher education, family history, and good knowledge are associated with DR screening. In addition, rural residence and undesirable attitudes toward DR are associated with regular eye checkup practice.

Purpose: To investigate the agreement between an online nurse‐assisted eye‐screening tool and reference tests in older adults receiving home healthcare and to collect user experiences. Methods: Older adults (65+) receiving home healthcare were included. Home healthcare nurses assisted in administering the eye‐screening tool at participants' homes. Approximately 2 weeks later, a researcher administered reference tests at participants' homes. Experiences from participants and home healthcare nurses were collected. Agreement in outcomes (distance and near visual acuity, with the latter being measured using two different optotypes, and macular problems) between the eye‐screening tool and reference clinical testing was compared. A difference of less than ±0.15 logMAR was considered acceptable. Results: A total of 40 participants were included. Here, we describe the results for the right eye; results for the left eye were similar. The mean difference between the eye‐screening tool and reference tests for distance visual acuity was 0.02 logMAR. The mean difference between the eye‐screening tool and reference tests using two different optotypes for near visual acuity was 0.06 and 0.03 logMAR, respectively. The majority of the individual data points were within the ±0.15 logMAR threshold (75%, 51% and 58%, respectively). The agreement between tests for macular problems was 75%. Participants and home healthcare nurses were generally satisfied with the eye‐screening tool, although remarks for further improvements were made. Conclusions: The eye‐screening tool is promising for nurse‐assisted eye screening in older adults receiving home healthcare, with the mostly satisfactory agreement. AIM: To summarize and analyze the results of neonatal eye screening using digital wide-area fundus imaging system(RetCam3)in general hospital, and to provide references for the prevention and treatment of neonatal eye diseases.METHODS: There were 7 239 newborns subjected to eye examinations in Zhongshan City People's Hospital from December 2018 to December 2021, and RetCam3 was used to obtain eye screening images. Newborns with abnormal screening results were treated and followed up accordingly.RESULTS: Among 7 239 newborns, 1 200(16.58%)newborns were diagnosed with abnormal eyes, including 7 cases of anterior segment abnormalities and 1 193 cases of fundus abnormalities. Among 7 cases of anterior segment abnormalities, 2 cases were congenital cataract, 2 cases were pupillary residual membrane, and 3 cases were corneal leukoplakia. Among 1 193 cases of fundus abnormalities, 1 141 cases were retinal hemorrhage(RH), and 19 cases were retinopathy of prematurity(ROP). In addition, there were 6 cases of ROP-like in term infants.CONCLUSION: Neonatal ocular abnormalities mainly develop in the posterior segment of the eye. Neonatal eye disease screening in general hospitals is beneficial to early detection and treatment of neonatal ocular diseases.

Background: Diabetes affects 422 million people worldwide, with the majority living in developing countries. Diabetes is currently one of the world's fourth leading causes of death. Global diabetes estimates for adults over the age of 18 The proportion of people over the age of 65 increased from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014. Diabetes can be controlled so that its consequences are minimized. Diabetic Retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness; this is due to long-term accumulation of damage to small blood vessels within the retina Diabetes is responsible for 2.6% of global blindness. Methods: In this cross - sectional study data was collected by the purposely constructed questionnaire. Questionnaire composed of the demographic items and items related to the awareness and knowledge about of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients Questionnaire was constructed after the series of discussions between the panel of experts this panel composed of from subject specialist, researcher, language expert. Cronbach alpha of the questionnaire was calculated. The study was conducted in the Aseer region of Saudi Arabia. Results: We have received 434 filled questionnaire so the response rate was 87%. Mean(SD) of the age was 37.8(9.6). 39.4% were females while 60.6% were male respondents.23.7% have HTN as an other chronic disease, 16.4% were smokers, 42.9% have DM duration less than 5 years, 26.3% have DM duration more than 15 years.28.6% have more than high school level of education. 70.3% have DM patients in family while 38.5% have more than 7 cumulative sugar level. Conclusion: The majority of patients get their information from their doctors. The lack of formal eye screening is the main reason for insufficient eye care utilization in rural China. Cataract, in particular, is increasingly prevalent with the aging population, but the treatment rate is relatively low. Village doctors are the most accessible health care resource for rural residents, receiving few empirical investigations into their role in eye care. This study aims to assess the role of village doctors in residents' uptake of eye screening (vision and cataract screening), the first step of cataract treatment. Data come from a community-based, cross-sectional survey conducted in 35 villages of a county of the Gansu Province, Northwestern China, in 2020. Among 1010 residents aged ≥ 50 and 35 village doctors, the multivariate logistic regression shows that village doctors' age, time spent on public health service, and service population were positively associated with residents' uptake of vision and cataract screening. Village doctors were capable of playing an active role in primary eye health services due to their richer knowledge about cataracts than residents (accuracy rate 86.75% vs. 63.50%, p < 0.001), but less than half of them were willing to undertake eye screening. This study highlights the positive role of village doctors in aging residents' eye screening and the potential role in improving the uptake of eye screening by offering health education. Abstract Background The current practice for new-born eye examination by an Ophthalmologist in Malaysian hospitals is limited to only preterm new-borns, syndromic or ill infants. Healthy term new-borns are usually discharged without a thorough eye examination. This study is aimed at determining the proportion and types of ocular abnormalities detected in purportedly healthy term new-borns. Method This cross-sectional study is comprised of 203 participants, all purportedly healthy term new-born infants from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward at Hospital Kuala Lumpur over a 6 months period. The examination list includes external eye examination, red reflex test, and fundus imaging using a wide-field digital retinal imaging system (Phoenix Clinical ICON Paediatric Retinal Camera) by a trained Investigator. The pathologies detected were documented. The results were compared and correlated with similar studies published in the literature previously. Results Total ocular abnormalities were detected in 34% of the infants. The most common finding was retinal haemorrhage in 29.6% of the infants, of which 53.3% occurred bilaterally. Spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) remained the greatest risk factor which has nearly 3.5 times higher risk of new-borns developing retinal haemorrhage compared to Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS). There was a 6% increased likelihood of developing retinal haemorrhage for every 1-min increment in the duration of 2nd stage of labour. Conclusion Universal eye screening for all new-borns using a wide-field digital imaging system is realistically possible, safe, and useful in detecting posterior segment disorders. The most common abnormality detected is retinal haemorrhage.

Purpose: The effectiveness of preverbal orthoptic tests at age 6, 9, 14 and 24 months in population‐wide screening was assessed. Methods: Two consecutive birth cohorts at 134 centres were compared. At general health screening visits, children born July–December 2011 were vision screened four times between 6 and 24 months with inspection, pupillary reflexes, eye motility, Hirschberg, cover test and monocular pursuit. Children born January–June 2012 were vision screened at general screening visits only in case of visually apparent abnormalities or positive family history. After referral, cause and severity of amblyopia were determined. Visual acuity was measured in all children at 36 and 45 months. Results: The control and intervention group comprised 5649 versus 5162 children. Amblyopia was diagnosed in 185 (3.3%) versus 159 children (3.1%), outside of screening in 21 (11.4%) versus 25 (15.7%). Between 6 and 24 months, 44 (23.8%) versus 27 (17%) (RR = 0.67 [95% CI 0.42, 1.09]) were referred and after visual acuity (VA) measurement 120 (64.9%) versus 107 (67.3%). Of 109 versus 108 children with refractive or bilateral amblyopia, 94 (86.2%) versus 92 (85.2%) were detected with VA measurements. Visual acuity of the amblyopic eye, after referral, was not significantly different between groups (p 0.896), nor was the time to amblyopia diagnosis (intention to screen [p 0.55]; per protocol [p 0.11]). Conclusion: The effectiveness of vision screening was not influenced by omission of orthoptic tests at general health screening at 6–24 months. AIM: To determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) among diabetic patients at the primary health clinics in Selangor, Malaysia. METHODS: All diabetic patients were screened in Retinal Disease Awareness Programme (RDAP) and those who had significant DR changes were referred to the hospital for further management. Descriptive analyses were done to determine the prevalence of DR and sociodemographic characteristics among patients with diabetic. Univariate and multivariable analysis using Logistic regression were performed to find association and predictor factors in this screening. RESULTS: A total of 3305 patients aged 40y and above were screened for DR. Of the patients screened, 9% patients were found to have DR and other visual complication such as maculopathy (0.9%), cataract (4.8%) and glaucoma (0.4%). The mean age of patients without retinopathy was 57.82±8.470y and the mean age of patients with DR was 63.93±9.857y. About 61.5% of the patients screened were aged below 60y and 38.5% were aged 60y and above. Majority of the patients screened were women 58.5% and Malay in the age group of 50-59y, while 27% were aged 60-69y. Significant association were found between age, sex, race, visual loss and DR. CONCLUSION: Although the prevalence of DR among patients is not alarming, effective interventions need to be implemented soon to avert a large burden of visual loss from DR.

Glaucoma is a worldwide leading cause of irreversible blindness. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment and prevention of vision loss. Recently, tele-ophthalmology has gained more acceptance for remote consulting, and eye screening. The tele-ocular screening can be enhanced further with emerging technologies in robotic process automation (RPA) that offers the ability to automate repetitive human tasks of the ocular screening process. This work aims to assess time effectiveness of the RPA-supported glaucoma screening. Mobile-based glaucoma screening combining RPA and machine learning (ML) is developed for assessing its usability and the time effectiveness of the RPA-supported glaucoma screening. The usability evaluation of the developed application is conducted with 68 participants including both patients and medical staff. Handling times that users spent with or without RPA support are recorded along with the satisfactory questionnaire surveys. The results show that the screening system with integration of RPA reduces the average handling time per user by 75%. The overall satisfaction score of the application is 8.10 out of 10. The machine learning module helps in notifying clinicians when the preliminary diagnosis results in severe conditions, allowing timely treatment. Integration of RPA and ML can assist clinicians and reduce the workload of medical staff significantly. Our study shows that the RPA and ML-based framework improves customer experiences and cost-time efficiency. It promotes feasibility in large-scale population glaucoma screening and data collection.

Purpose: In children, refractive error (RE), especially myopia, is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. We compared the magnitude and determinants of RE among Saudi and Indian students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This study was conducted in 2017–2018 and evaluated students in preparatory and secondary grades. A “Spot Screener” was used to determine if the child passed or failed a refraction test. Data on vision, RE, anisometropia, and strabismus were compared between Indian and Saudi students. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Objectives:In Turkey, preventive medicine services are the responsibility of family physicians and vision screening is a key component of this responsibility. In this study, we aimed to investigate the approach of family physicians to vision screening in infants and children.Materials and Methods:Data were collected using a 16-item questionnaire administered to 100 family physicians working in the center and provinces of Diyarbakır.Results:The results indicated that 88 (88%) physicians declared knowing what the red reflex test was, while 12 physicians declared that they had never heard of it. Only 16 (16%) physicians performed the test routinely and 36 (36%) physicians performed it only in suspicious cases. Ten (10%) physicians indicated that they did not refer the patients to an ophthalmologist even though they did not perform the red reflex test. Moreover, 5 (5%) physicians did not have an ophthalmoscope and 12 (12%) physicians reported not knowing how to use an ophthalmoscope. Forty (40%) of the physicians measured preschool visual acuity at least once. Sixty-six (66%) physicians referred younger children who could not express their vision problems to an ophthalmologist. Four (4%) physicians declared that they would delay surgery in children with strabismus until they were old enough for surgery. Ninety-three (93%) physicians suggested that educational seminars about vision screening would be beneficial.Conclusion:Educational seminars about vision screening may have favorable outcomes. The medical devices in family medicine centers should be improved. Vision screening can be added to the negative performance-based compensation system in order to increase physicians’ attention to vision screening. To implement detailed eye screening programs like those in developed countries, an infrastructure should be established for this screening program.

This article presents an investigation on the usability testing of Diabetic Retinopathy Consultation System (DRCS) development. DRCS is an interactive medical web-based consultation system for diabetic retinopathy screening with the features of image processing and image editing. The expected outcome of this paper is a comprehensive analysis of the web usability towards the development of a novel consultation system for diabetic retinopathy screening. Seven important usability evaluation components were included in this testing in order to investigate the user engagement and satisfaction of the proposed medical consultation system. Online questionnaires were distributed as a method to collect user testing outputs. A total of 27 respondents from the health clinics were involved in this survey. According to the outcomes of the online survey, the majority of respondents are satisfied with the outcomes of the DRCS. In conclusion, the online findings depict that the DRCS is highly functional, as required by the target users to assist consultation among medical doctors on diabetic retinopathy screening. Purpose: Early detection of ocular abnormalities in newborns is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to assess the 1‐year result of a multicentre prospective neonatal eye examination programme with wide‐field digital imaging system in China. Methods: A multicentre collaborative prospective study group for neonatal eye screening was established in nine hospitals, including eight Maternal and Children's Hospitals, and one general hospital across China from July 2016 to June 2017. Ocular examinations were performed on newborns within 28 days after birth using a wide‐field digital imaging system. Data were reviewed and analysed. The primary outcome was the prevalence of ocular abnormalities in neonates. Results: We detected 13 514 (20.91%) abnormal cases in 64 632 newborns. The most frequent abnormality was retinal haemorrhage (RH; 11.83%). Most of mild RH resolved spontaneously. Among those who were beyond retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening criteria of China (gestational age ≥32 w and birthweight ≥2000 g), the total number of neonates with ocular abnormality was 12 218/62 799(19.45%). 59.44% of neonatal ocular abnormalities detected (accounting for 11.56% of all the screened population) needed further interference or observation. Among them, 258 patients (0.41% of all the screened population) needed immediate or timely intervention, including congenital cataract, retinal detachment, retinoblastoma and other ocular abnormalities. One thousand and ninety‐eight patients (1.75% of all the screened neonates) should be followed up closely and needed further diagnosis or intervention if necessary, such as ROP or ROP‐like retinopathy, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy and persistent hyperplasia of primary vitreous. Five thousand nine hundred and six patients (9.4%) with minor clinical significance needed short‐term follow‐up. Conclusions: This prospective multicentre study of newborn ocular examination showed a relatively high prevalence of ocular abnormalities. There are a relatively high percentage of congenital eye pathology that required further referral and treatment in those neonates who were not screened routinely. According to the benefits and risks associated with neonatal eye examinations, neonatal ocular screening programme can detect ocular abnormalities at the very early stage and may play a positive role in promoting paediatric eye health. Background: The current practice for new-born eye examination by an Ophthalmologist in Malaysian hospitals is limited to only preterm new-borns, syndromic or ill infants. Healthy term new-borns are usually discharged without a thorough eye examination. This study is aimed at determining the proportion and types of ocular abnormalities detected in purportedly healthy term new-borns.Method: This cross-sectional study is comprised of 203 participants, all purportedly healthy term new-born infants from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward at Hospital Kuala Lumpur over a 6 months period. The examination list includes external eye examination, red reflex test, and fundus imaging using a wide-field digital retinal imaging system (Phoenix Clinical ICON Paediatric Retinal Camera) by a trained Investigator. The pathologies detected were documented. The results were compared and correlated with similar studies published in the literature previously.Results: Total ocular abnormalities were detected in 34% of the infants. The most common finding was retinal haemorrhage in 29.6% of the infants, of which 53.3% occurred bilaterally. Spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) remained the greatest risk factor which has nearly 3.5 times higher risk of new-borns developing retinal haemorrhage compared to Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS). There was a 6% increased likelihood of developing retinal haemorrhage for every 1-min increment in the duration of 2nd stage of labour.Conclusion: Universal eye screening for all new-borns using a wide-field digital imaging system is realistically possible, safe, and useful in detecting posterior segment disorders. Introduction: The commonest cause of visual impairment in children is refractive errors. Undetected and uncorrected refractive errors are significant problem in school children. Present study was aimed to find out pattern of refractive errors in school going children of age group 6-16 years in the rural area of western Maharashtra. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the primary and secondary school of a village. Total 500 children of age group 6-16 years of the selected school were screened for visual acuity testing in the school, using Snellen's Chart for distance and Jaeger's chart for near vision. Children who had difficulty in reading 6/6 and N/6 or less were examined at Department of Ophthalmology Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni with the parent's consent. Refractive errors were confirmed after cycloplegic refraction. Results: Out of 500 children screened, 82 children were found to have refractive errors. The prevalence of refractive errors was found to be 16.4%. Among 82 children diagnosed to have refractive errors, myopia was the most common refractive error seen in 52 cases (63.41%), followed by astigmatism in 18 cases (21.95%) and hypermetropia in 12 cases (14.64%). As per WHO guidelines for grading of visual impairment it was found that 9.76% cases had moderate visual impairment i.e. visual acuity from 6/24 to 6/60 and 90.24% had mild visual impairment. Conclusion: Prevalence of refractive errors was 16.4 % in a rural based village school children. Majority of children had visual impairment in the form of simple myopia and low degree astigmatism. AIMS: To evaluate the refractive status of young Saudi schoolchildren with a “Spot Screener.” SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to July 2016 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Children of kindergarten (3–5 years) and grades 1 and 2 (6–7 years) were screened for refractive error (RE) using the handheld Spot Screener (Welch Allyn, Skaneateles Falls, NY, USA). Data were collected on age, gender, and spectacle use. The pass/fail notation from the Spot Screener and the RE were documented. Children with a “fail” were re-tested with an autorefractor (AR). The rate of agreement was evaluated for the spherical equivalent (SE) from the Spot Screener and AR. RESULTS: We examined 300 schoolchildren and 114 preschool children. The prevalence of RE was 22% in schoolchildren and 25% in preschoolers. There were 183 (61%) hyperopes, 110 (36.7%) myopes, 6 (2%) emmetropes, and 29 (9.7%) astigmats (>2 D cylinder) in grade 1 and 2. There were 85 (74.6%) hyperopes, 22 (19.3%) myopes, 7 (6.1%) emmetropes, and 10 (8.8%) astigmats among preschoolers. The SE differed between the AR and the Spot Screener in 17 (28%) children of 61 failed Spot Screener tests. Accommodation (9, 53%) and high astigmatism (8, 47%) were the main underlying causes of the difference. The Spot Screener could identify RE for the first time in 51 (17%) schoolchildren and 26 (22%) preschoolers. End-users suggested that Spot Screener was child-friendly and quick to test RE. CONCLUSIONS: The Spot Screener could be a good initial screening tool for RE in young schoolchildren.

Importance Screening for diabetic retinopathy for early detection and treatment can prevent vision loss. Background: We aimed to assess rates of eye examination of people with diabetes, adherence with national guidelines and investigate characteristics of those who do not adhere. Design We used data from the 45 and Up Study, a cohort study of 267 153 randomly selected residents aged ≥45 years from New South Wales, Australia. Individual survey data collected in 2006 to 2009 were linked to corresponding national Medicare Benefits Schedule claims data for 2006 to 2016. Participants: The study sample included 24 832 participants who reported having diabetes and at least 5 years of observation. Methods: Claims for visits to optometrists or ophthalmologists were assessed to estimate rates of eye examination. Poisson regression models were used to investigate factors associated with non‐adherence. Main outcome measure: Participants were classified as adherent if the average time between eye care claims was consistent with national guideline of having an eye exam every 2 years. Results: Of 50% to 75% people with diabetes met the biennial eye examination guidelines and only 21% to 28% with diabetes duration ≥10 years were adherent to the annual eye examination guideline. Characteristics associated with greatest (~1.3‐fold) risk of non‐adherence were smoking, age <60 years and higher income. Conclusions and relevance: There is a clear need to improve rates of adherence to eye examination guidelines among people with diabetes to reduce the personal and societal burden of diabetic retinopathy. We aimed to report the results of fundus photography ophthalmic examinations among older adults in a rural community in South Korea. We used data from the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project cohort study, which was designed to examine the entire population of individuals aged 60 years or older and their spouses living in a rural Village K of Ganghwa Island, South Korea. At baseline, a total of 860 people was targeted as the study population. From December 2011 to January 2019, five health examinations were conducted, including baseline and follow-up tests. During the fifth wave of the study, we performed fundus photography to assess eye health. Ophthalmic and physical examinations were conducted for 387 people who participated in the fifth wave by trained researchers. Systemic factors were evaluated via blood and diagnostic tests. After excluding eight people who did not undergo follow-up fundoscopy, a total of 379 participants was included for analysis. We classified the participants into two groups with either no (zero) or one or more suspicious ophthalmic diseases. The abnormalities included media opacity, suspected glaucoma, and suspicion of retinal disease as diagnosed by a trained specialist. We further categorized ophthalmic conditions as clinically insignificant, follow-up needed, semi-urgent, and urgent conditions. We included 379 participants, of which 225 (59.4%) were women. The mean age of the participants was 76.4 ± 6.2 years. Among all participants, 81% (n=307) had one or more abnormalities on fundus screening. Older age, living alone, high blood pressure, and high fasting insulin were associated with an increased risk of having ≥ one eye disease. In terms of triage, 3.7% (n= 14) of the observed conditions were urgent, and 25.9% (n= 98) were semi-urgent. Therefore, we documented fundoscopy results among the elderly population in a rural community in South Korea. Elderly people living alone were more likely to have eye disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of infant positioning on pain, heart rate, oxygen saturation and crying time during examination. The randomized controlled experimental study was carried out on 70 preterm infants. ROP position + pacifier was used in the experimental group (n = 35) while only the pacifier was used in the control group. Heart rates, oxygen saturation, crying duration and pain score (Premature Infant Pain Profile-PIPP) were evaluated before, during and after the screening. The preterm infants in the experimental group recorded lower pain scores at the beginning of the screening (p = 0.01), at the end of the screening (p = 0.01) and after screening (p = 0.01) than those in the control group. The heart rate was higher in the control group during screening (p = 0.010) and after screening (p = 0.008) than in the preterm infants in the experimental group. Oxygen saturation was not significantly different between the groups before, during or after screening. Crying duration was lower in the experimental group than in the control group (p = 0.010). Positioning of the infant to support behavioral organization was found to be effective in reducing pain and shortening crying time during eye examination, and had favorable effects on physiological variables with ROP position during eye examinations. Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of potential age‐related eye conditions in elderly who are assisted by home healthcare nurses. The number of referrals to the general practitioner (GP), feasibility of screening and associations between vision loss and health outcomes were also studied. Methods: Cross‐sectional study in which trained home healthcare nurses screened the eyes of 151 patients [mean age 80 (50–96 years)] using their available correction, with VISION 2020 Netherlands screeners (e.g. acuity/field loss). Health outcomes were assessed with questionnaires. Results: Distance decimal visual acuity was ≤0.3 in 20.5% (unilateral) and 19.9% (bilateral) of patients, and near visual acuity was ≤0.4 in 17.7% (unilateral) and 33.3% (bilateral). Macular dysfunction was present in 21.5% (unilateral) and 8.3% (bilateral) and peripheral field problems in 11.4% (unilateral) and 7.9% (bilateral). GP referrals were proposed in 21.5%; in 40%, the GP or ophthalmologist was already aware of eye problems. Although health problems were prominent in participants (8.6% fractures, 22% depression and 18% anxiety), no significant associations were found between vision loss and self‐reported outcomes. Conclusion: Sixty per cent of frail elderly home healthcare patients had an ophthalmologic condition. Although a large number was already known in eye health care, >20% was referred with an unrecognized ophthalmologic problem. Basic ophthalmologic screening by home healthcare nurses might be a potentially relevant tool to reduce the burden of age‐related vision loss, contributing to the joint World Health Organization – VISION 2020 initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness. Purpose: To determine uptake, adherence and influencing factors to follow-up care by newly diagnosed glaucoma patients from free eye screening exercise. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional survey of newly diagnosed glaucoma patients during free eye screenings carried out in March and October, 2016 in Enugu, Nigeria. Data on participants were analyzed after a minimum of 6 months from the screening for uptake and adherence to follow-up care. Qualifying patients had questionnaires administered to them by phone interview. Information requested regards awareness, knowledge on diagnosis as well as reasons for non-uptake and non-adherence. Results: 182 newly diagnosed glaucoma patients were included of which 121 (66.5%) were males, with median age of 50years.About 164 (90.1%) had at least a primary education. There were more self- employed persons 59 (32.4%) compared to other occupations. Uptake of follow up care was 17.6% (32/182). Adherence rate was 25% (8/32). Major reasons for non-uptake were lack of funds 54.9% (n = 50/91), distance 11% (n = 10/91) and receiving care from other facilities 11.0% (n = 10/91). Others include discourteous staff behavior and lack of information on diagnosis. Similarly, major reasons for non-adherence were lack of funds 44.4% (n = 8/18) and distance 22.2% (n = 4/18). Knowledge and prior awareness of glaucoma were found to be significantly associated with uptake of follow up care (p = 0.020). Conclusion: Uptake and adherence to follow-up was found to be low in this study population mainly attributed to cost, distance and poor knowledge of glaucoma natural history. Reviewing cost/out of pocket expenditure, providing care closer to patients, adequate education of staff and patients may significantly improve uptake of care after initial diagnosis. Purpose: To determine the prevalence of visual impairment attributable to refractive error and other causes in a youthful Ghanaian population. Methods: A prospective survey of all consecutive visits by first-year tertiary students to the Optometry clinic between August, 2013 and April, 2014. Of the 4378 first-year students aged 16–39 years enumerated, 3437 (78.5%) underwent the eye examination. The examination protocol included presenting visual acuity (PVA), ocular motility, and slit-lamp examination of the external eye, anterior segment and media, and non-dilated fundus examination. Pinhole acuity and fundus examination were performed when the PVA ≤ 6/12 in one or both eyes to determine the principal cause of the vision loss. Results: The mean age of participants was 21.86 years (95% CI: 21.72–21.99). The prevalence of bilateral visual impairment (BVI; PVA in the better eye ≤6/12) and unilateral visual impairment UVI; PVA in the worse eye ≤6/12) were 3.08% (95% CI: 2.56–3.72) and 0.79% (95% CI: 0.54–1.14), respectively. Among 106 participants with BVI, refractive error (96.2%) and corneal opacity (3.8%) were the causes. Of the 27 participants with UVI, refractive error (44.4%), maculopathy (18.5%) and retinal disease (14.8%) were the major causes. There was unequal distribution of BVI in the different age groups, with those above 20 years having a lesser burden. Conclusion: Eye screening and provision of affordable spectacle correction to the youth could be timely to eliminate visual impairment.

Abstract: Importance: The novel intervention was effective at improving compliance to appropriate tertiary eye care after community eye screening. Background: Elderly individuals from low socio‐economic background with visual impairment (VI) often do not attend tertiary care, even if significant eye diseases are detected while in the community. We evaluate a novel incentive care scheme (ICS) to improve compliance to appropriate follow‐up after community eye screening. Design: Randomized controlled trial in a population‐based setting was conducted. Participants: A total of 140 elderly individuals with VI (visual acuity <6/12, mean age ± SD = 66.6 ± 8.9 years, 46.4% female) were included. Methods: Participants were randomized to either ICS (N = 72) or usual care (UC; N = 68). ICS incorporated patient education, social support and financial assistance to assist individuals in attending tertiary eye care. UC comprised of a standard referral letter and advice. Main outcome measure: Primary outcome included compliance to eye care referral. Secondary outcomes included best‐corrected visual acuity and vision‐related quality of life assessed at baseline and 3 months. Results: Participants receiving the ICS intervention had higher rates of compliance to tertiary eye care attendance compared to UC (31.9% vs. 16.2%, respectively, P = 0.027). While we observed an overall significant improvement in best‐corrected visual acuity at 3 months in both groups (P < 0.05), we found no significant differences in Rasch‐transformed vision‐related quality of life scores between groups (all P > 0.05). Identified barriers for tertiary healthcare access included patient attitudes and financial‐ and health‐related barriers. Conclusion and Relevance: Our pilot RCT found that ICS improved adherence to appropriate tertiary eye care referrals after community eye screening in elderly people with VI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pediatric age is the most important period for preventive eye care services and research. Vision loss in this period could cause a long life without sight and also significant financial and moral losses, in terms of people and society. Rational screening programs may reduce vision loss in childhood and this issue increases the value of the subject. Retinopathy of prematurity, congenital/infantile cataracts and glaucoma, optic nerve and retinal pathologies, refractive errors, amblyopia, and strabismus are the major clinical pictures causing visual loss in childhood. Using the epidemiological data, it could be estimated that every year approximately two to three thousand children suffer an ophthalmologic disease that causes significant visual loss. Regarding the refractive errors and amblyopia, it could be estimated that hundreds of thousands of children need ophthalmological follow-up in the country. For the timely treatment of these pathologies, a couple of short eye examination programs seem more realistic. Childhood vision loss in the country could be reduced, by informing pediatricians and family physicians and by proper guiding of the public opinion. Effective eye screening could be achieved with the implementation of simple methods like red reflex/Brückner test with ophthalmoscopy, or simultaneous (binocular) retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy of both eyes. Screening programs could be spread throughout the country by appropriate training of the physicians in the health institutions of the country. Digital retinal imaging is a challenging screening method for which effective, robust and cost-effective approaches are still to be developed. Regular screening for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic maculopathy diseases is necessary in order to identify the group at risk of visual impairment. This paper presents a novel automatic detection of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy in eye fundus images by employing fuzzy image processing techniques. The paper first introduces the existing systems for diabetic retinopathy screening, with an emphasis on the maculopathy detection methods. The proposed medical decision support system consists of four parts, namely: image acquisition, image preprocessing including four retinal structures localisation, feature extraction and the classification of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy. A combination of fuzzy image processing techniques, the Circular Hough Transform and several feature extraction methods are implemented in the proposed system. The paper also presents a novel technique for the macula region localisation in order to detect the maculopathy. In addition to the proposed detection system, the paper highlights a novel online dataset and it presents the dataset collection, the expert diagnosis process and the advantages of our online database compared to other public eye fundus image databases for diabetic retinopathy purposes. Background: Although glaucoma is the lead cause of irreversible blindness globally, the condition shows no signs or symptoms until later stages. Knowledge about the disease is known to influence utilization of eye screening services. This study aimed at understanding knowledge and perception of risk for glaucoma, as well as eye screening behaviour among residents of Abokobi, a peri-urban community. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that employed quantitative data collection methods, with the use of a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge about glaucoma and eye screening behaviour. Also, associations between socio-demographic factors and awareness as well as perception of risk were analysed using Chi-square test or Univariate Fisher's exact test. Results: Out of a total of 300 respondents, 60.3 % were females and 39.3 % were aware of glaucoma. Majority (99.1 %) of respondents aware of glaucoma also agreed the disease can result in blindness with only (28 %) affirming that blindness from glaucoma is irreversible. Nearly half (49.7 %) of the respondents perceived themselves to be at risk of developing glaucoma. The results showed that age and education (p <0.0001) were statistically significant with glaucoma awareness. Approximately, 20.7 % of the respondents have had their eye screened with just a few (4.3 %) screening for glaucoma. Conclusion: Although glaucoma awareness was high, the findings display inadequate knowledge about glaucoma. There is a need to effectively inform and educate people about the disease. Regular eye screening is essential for the early detection and treatment of the diabetic retinopathy. This paper presents a novel automatic screening system for diabetic retinopathy that focuses on the detection of the earliest visible signs of retinopathy, which are microaneurysms. Microaneurysms are small dots on the retina, formed by ballooning out of a weak part of the capillary wall. The detection of the microaneurysms at an early stage is vital, and it is the first step in preventing the diabetic retinopathy. The paper first explores the existing systems and applications related to diabetic retinopathy screening, with a focus on the microaneurysm detection methods. The proposed decision support system consists of an automatic acquisition, screening and classification of diabetic retinopathy colour fundus images, which could assist in the detection and management of the diabetic retinopathy. Several feature extraction methods and the circular Hough transform have been employed in the proposed microaneurysm detection system, alongside the fuzzy histogram equalisation method. Purpose: Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20–74 years within the United States. The Innovative Network for Sight Research group (INSIGHT) designed the Diabetic Eye Screening Study (DESS) to examine the feasibility and short-term effectiveness of non-mydriatic diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening for adults with diabetes in community-based settings. Methods: Study enrollment began in December 2011 at four sites: an internal medicine clinic at a county hospital in Birmingham, Alabama; a Federally-qualified community healthcare center in Miami-Dade County, Florida; a university-affiliated outpatient pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and a medical home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. People 18 years or older with previously diagnosed diabetes were offered free DR screening using non-mydriatic retinal photography that was preceded by a brief questionnaire addressing demographic information and previous eye care use. Visual acuity was also measured for each eye. Images were evaluated at a telemedicine reading center by trained evaluators using the National Health System DR grading classification. Participants and their physicians were sent screening report results and telephoned for a follow-up survey 3 months post-screening to determine whether participants had sought follow-up comprehensive eye care and their experiences with the screening process. Results: Target enrollment at each site was a minimum of 500 persons. Three of the four sites met this enrollment goal. Conclusion: The INSIGHT/DESS is intended to establish the feasibility and short-term effectiveness of DR screening using non-mydriatic retinal photography in persons with diabetes who seek services in community-based clinic and pharmacy settings. Purpose To investigate omission of population-based eye screening at age 6-9 months in the Netherlands. Methods Prospective population-based consecutive birth cohort study was used. In two consecutive birth cohorts, children were eye screened at 1-2 and 3-4 months, but at general-health screening at 6-9 months, the second cohort was not eye screened, unless anything conspicuous was noted or in case of positive family history. Data were collected from screening records and anonymous questionnaires. Semi-structured daylong observations were made of physicians examining children aged 0-4 years, including children from the cohorts, by two orthoptic students. Results 58 of 6059 children (0.96%), in the screened, and 48 of 5482 children (0.88%) in the unscreened group were referred to orthoptist or ophthalmologist, mostly for observed strabismus. Amblyopia, all combined with strabismus, was diagnosed in ten screened (0.17%) versus six unscreened children (0.11%). Most physicians found preverbal examinations and decisions to refer difficult. The observations by orthoptic students revealed that cover test, pupillary reflexes, pursuit movements and eye motility were frequently performed inadequately, contrary to the Hirschberg test, at this age. Conclusion The screened and unscreened group differed little regarding the number of children referred and found to have amblyopia. Referral was mostly based on observed strabismus. Aims: To determine if free eye screening can improve clinic attendance, bed occupancy and detect previously unrecognized diseases in tertiary hospitals. Methods: A free eye screening programme was conducted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital over 5 days. The demographic data of the subjects were obtained, their eyes were examined and the findings recorded. The number of patients attending clinic and bed occupancy at one week, one month and three months after screening were determined. Results: There were 188 subjects comprising 123 males and 65 females. The most common conditions seen were refractive errors (44.1%), cataract (26.1%), allergic conjunctivitis (10.6%), glaucoma (9%) and pterygium (7.4%). There was a considerable increase in daily clinic attendance and bed occupancy over the next three months. Conclusions: Free eye screening programmes are useful for identification and treatment of potentially blinding eye conditions. They also, help in providing awareness and improved utilization of hospital services. Clinic attendance and bed occupancy are considerably improved after such events.

Pediatric age is the most important period for preventive eye care services and research. Vision loss in this period could cause a long life without sight and also significant financial and moral losses, in terms of people and society. Rational screening programs may reduce vision loss in childhood and this issue increases the value of the subject. Retinopathy of prematurity, congenital/infantile cataracts and glaucoma, optic nerve and retinal pathologies, refractive errors, amblyopia, and strabismus are the major clinical pictures causing visual loss in childhood. Using the epidemiological data, it could be estimated that every year approximately two to three thousand children suffer an ophthalmologic disease that causes significant visual loss. Regarding the refractive errors and amblyopia, it could be estimated that hundreds of thousands of children need ophthalmological follow-up in the country. For the timely treatment of these pathologies, a couple of short eye examination programs seem more realistic. Childhood vision loss in the country could be reduced, by informing pediatricians and family physicians and by proper guiding of the public opinion. Effective eye screening could be achieved with the implementation of simple methods like red reflex/Brückner test with ophthalmoscopy, or simultaneous (binocular) retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy of both eyes. Screening programs could be spread throughout the country by appropriate training of the physicians in the health institutions of the country. Background: To screen for visual impairment in Malaysian preschool children. Methods: Visual screening was conducted in 400 preschool children aged 4 to 6 years. The screening involved two basic procedures; the distant visual acuity test using the Sheridan Gardiner chart and the depth perception test using the Langs stereoacuity test. Criteria for referral were a visual acuity of 6/12 or less in the better eye or a fail in the depth perception test. Results: The prevalence of visual impairment was 5% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.3, 7.6). Of the 400 preschool children screened, 20 of them failed the distant visual acuity test or the stereopsis test. Refractive errors were the most common cause of visual impairment (95%, 95% CI = 76.2, 98.8); myopic astigmatism was the commonest type of refractive error (63.2%, 95% CI = 40.8, 80.9). Conclusion: The study is a small but important step in the effort to understand the problem of visual impairment among our preschool children. SummaryAims A community diabetes eye screening service using slit-lamp biomicroscopy and colour fundus photography was set up in 1993 at the Barnsley District General Hospital Diabetes Centre with a foot screening service being added in 1994. The service is available for all diabetic patients in the Barnsley health district (encompassing 220 000 people). After 4½ years, a survey was carried out to establish the uptake of this service. Methods All diabetic patients on the local diabetes register were checked for attendance at the eye screening service or the Barnsley District General Hospital Eye Department. Questionnaires were sent to general practitioners to establish what screening was received by those attending neither of these services. Results More than 10% of patients were found to be incorrectly registered. Of the 4000 correctly registered diabetic patients, 62% were screened annually by this service and 25% were under the care of the Department of Ophthalmology. Half of the remaining 13% were screened at other hospitals or by opticians or general practitioners and the other half were either too old or ill to be screened or were non-compliant. Aim: We report a case of tuberculous choroidal granulomas in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) who developed miliary tuberculosis (TB) and bilateral granulomas while on immunosuppressive medication. Methods: The case notes of thispatient were reviewed. Results: The patient was first seen for base-line ophthalmic screening before anti-tuberculous medication was started. The patient was subsequently followed up at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 2 months with fundal examination and photography. One choroidal granuloma was found in the right eye while another peripheral lesion involved the left eye. Both resolved in response toanti-tuberculous medication over a 2-month period with resultant chorioretinal atrophy and scarring. Conclusion: This case demonstrates the need to screen immuno-suppressed SLE patients who have miliary TB for possible eye involvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: In Turkey, preventive medicine services are the responsibility of family physicians and vision screening is a key component of this responsibility. In this study, we aimed to investigate the approach of family physicians to vision screening in infants and children. Materials and Methods: Data were collected using a 16-item questionnaire administered to 100 family physicians working in the center and provinces of Diyarbakır. Results: The results indicated that 88 (88%) physicians declared knowing what the red reflex test was, while 12 physicians declared that they had never heard of it. Only 16 (16%) physicians performed the test routinely and 36 (36%) physicians performed it only in suspicious cases. Ten (10%) physicians indicated that they did not refer the patients to an ophthalmologist even though they did not perform the cases. Ten (10%) physicians indicated that they did not refer the patients to an ophthalmologist even though they did not perform the red reflex test. Moreover, 5 (5%) physicians did not have an ophthalmoscope and 12 (12%) physicians reported not knowing how to use an ophthalmoscope. Forty (40%) of the physicians measured preschool visual acuity at least once. Sixty-six (66%) physicians referred younger children who could not express their vision problems to an ophthalmologist. Four (4%) physicians declared that they would delay surgery in children with strabismus until they were old enough for surgery. Ninety-three (93%) physicians suggested that educational seminars about vision screening would be beneficial. Conclusion: Educational seminars about vision screening may have favorable outcomes. The medical devices in family medicine centers should be improved. Vision screening can be added to the negative performance-based compensation system in order to increase physicians' attention to vision screening.
