Abstract: Abstract We present a study of Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ , Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta $$ , and Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime } $$ decays using the Belle and Belle II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980 fb −1 and 426 fb −1, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.48 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.03 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.11 ± 0.01 stat ± 0.01 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.08 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.48\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.03\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.11\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.08\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\end{array}} $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical (stat) and systematic (syst). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = 6.9 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 1.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η = 1.6 ± 0.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ± 0.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ = 1.2 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.1 syst ± 0.2 norm × 10 − 3 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=\left(6.9\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)=\left(1.6\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\varXi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)=\left(1.2\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\end{array}} $$ where the third uncertainties are from B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ . The asymmetry parameter for Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ is measured to be α Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = − 0.90 ± 0.15 stat ± 0.23 syst $$ \alpha \left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.90\pm 0.15\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.23\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $$ .

Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ − → μ − μ + μ − using a 424 fb −1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 −8 on the branching fraction of the τ − → μ − μ + μ − decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R μ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ , B − → D (*)0 K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb −1. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed B meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of m(K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) and m(D (*) K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , B − → D* 0 K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , and B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D* + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity J P = 1− for the K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ systems and J P = 1+ for the K − K* 0 systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ , B − → D (*)0 D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.

Abstract: Abstract We present an analysis of the process e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) (where n = 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of the π + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to the π + π − Υ(1S) and π + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays to π + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in the π + π − Υ(1S, 2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the π ∓ Z b ± $$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ or f 0(980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: Caesalpinioideae is the second largest subfamily of legumes (Leguminosae) with ca. 4680 species and 163 genera. It is an ecologically and economically important group formed of mostly woody perennials that range from large canopy emergent trees to functionally herbaceous geoxyles, lianas and shrubs, and which has a global distribution, occurring on every continent except Antarctica. Following the recent re-circumscription of 15 Caesalpinioideae genera as presented in Advances in Legume Systematics 14, Part 1, and using as a basis a phylogenomic analysis of 997 nuclear gene sequences for 420 species and all but five of the genera currently recognised in the subfamily, we present a new higher-level classification for the subfamily. The new classification of Caesalpinioideae comprises eleven tribes, all of which are either new, reinstated or re-circumscribed at this rank: Caesalpinieae Rchb. (27 genera / ca. 223 species), Campsiandreae LPWG (2 / 5–22), Cassieae Bronn (7 / 695), Ceratonieae Rchb. (4 / 6), Dimorphandreae Benth. (4 / 35), Erythrophleeae LPWG (2 /13), Gleditsieae Nakai (3 / 20), Mimoseae Bronn (100 / ca. 3510), Pterogyneae LPWG (1 / 1), Schizolobieae Nakai (8 / 42–43), Sclerolobieae Benth. & Hook. f. (5 / ca. 113). Although many of these lineages have been recognised and named in the past, either as tribes or informal generic groups, their circumscriptions have varied widely and changed over the past decades, such that all the tribes described here differ in generic membership from those previously recognised. Importantly, the approximately 3500 species and 100 genera of the former subfamily Mimosoideae are now placed in the reinstated, but newly circumscribed, tribe Mimoseae. Because of the large size and ecological importance of the tribe, we also provide a clade-based classification system for Mimoseae that includes 17 named lower-level clades. Fourteen of the 100 Mimoseae genera remain unplaced in these lower-level clades: eight are resolved in two grades and six are phylogenetically isolated monogeneric lineages. In addition to the new classification, we provide a key to genera, morphological descriptions and notes for all 163 genera, all tribes, and all named clades. The diversity of growth forms, foliage, flowers and fruits are illustrated for all genera, and for each genus we also provide a distribution map, based on quality-controlled herbarium specimen localities. A glossary for specialised terms used in legume morphology is provided. This new phylogenetically based classification of Caesalpinioideae provides a solid system for communication and a framework for downstream analyses of biogeography, trait evolution and diversification, as well as for taxonomic revision of still understudied genera.

10. Recovery from social isolation requires dopamine in males, but not the autism-related gene nlg3 in either sex

Abstract: Social isolation causes profound changes in social behaviour in a variety of species. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms modulating behavioural responses to social isolation and social recovery remain to be elucidated. Here, we quantified the behavioural response of vinegar flies to social isolation using two distinct protocols (social space preference and sociability, the spontaneous tendencies to form groups). We found that social isolation increased social space and reduced sociability. These effects of social isolation were reversible and could be reduced after 3 days of group housing. Flies with a loss of function of neuroligin3 (orthologue of autism-related neuroligin genes) with known increased social space in a socially enriched environment were still able to recover from social isolation. We also show that dopamine (DA) is needed for a response to social isolation and recovery in males but not in females. Furthermore, only in males, DA levels are reduced after isolation and are not recovered after group housing. Finally, in socially enriched flies mutant for neuroligin3, DA levels are reduced in males, but not in females. We propose a model to explain how DA and neuroligin3 are involved in the behavioural response to social isolation and its recovery in a dynamic and sex-specific manner.

Abstract: ABSTRACT: Vaccination is one of the most important control tools to reduce Salmonella in poultry production. In order for a live vaccine to be licensed for field use it should be provided with the detection methods to differentiate it from field strains. This paper aims to describe the validation of an alternative method for the differentiation of the Salmonella 441/014 vaccine strain from field strains, using a chromogenic Media, ASAP from bioMérieux. The ASAP-based differentiation method was compared with already authorized methods, namely the Anicon SE Kylt PCR DIVA 1 assay and Ceva S-Check Salmonella differentiation kit, following the ISO 16140-6:2019 validation method guidelines. A Generalised Linear Model was fitted to the data to determine the inclusivity and exclusivity of differentiation methods (PCR Kylt vs. S-Check vs. ASAPTM). Statistical differences were based on a P-value level of < 0.05 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). In this study, we show that the ASAP media was able to differentiate Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine strains from field strains, obtaining 100% agreement between the three differentiation assays. This differentiation approach is quicker, easier to deploy and cheaper as compared to alternative methods.

14. Ultralong 100 ns spin relaxation time in graphite at room temperature

Abstract: Abstract Graphite has been intensively studied, yet its electron spins dynamics remains an unresolved problem even 70 years after the first experiments. The central quantities, the longitudinal (T 1) and transverse (T 2) relaxation times were postulated to be equal, mirroring standard metals, but T 1 has never been measured for graphite. Here, based on a detailed band structure calculation including spin-orbit coupling, we predict an unexpected behavior of the relaxation times. We find, based on saturation ESR measurements, that T 1 is markedly different from T 2. Spins injected with perpendicular polarization with respect to the graphene plane have an extraordinarily long lifetime of 100 ns at room temperature. This is ten times more than in the best graphene samples. The spin diffusion length across graphite planes is thus expected to be ultralong, on the scale of ~ 70 μm, suggesting that thin films of graphite — or multilayer AB graphene stacks — can be excellent platforms for spintronics applications compatible with 2D van der Waals technologies. Finally, we provide a qualitative account of the observed spin relaxation based on the anisotropic spin admixture of the Bloch states in graphite obtained from density functional theory calculations.

17. Misleading fruits: The non-monophyly of Pseudopiptadenia and Pityrocarpa supports generic re-circumscriptions and a new genus within mimosoid legumes

Abstract: Generic delimitation in Piptadenia and allies (mimosoid legumes) has been in a state of flux, particularly caused by over-reliance on fruit and seed morphology to segregate species out of Piptadenia into the genera Parapiptadenia, Pityrocarpa and Pseudopiptadenia. Although supporting their segregation from Piptadenia, previous phylogenetic analyses suggested that some of these segregated genera are not monophyletic. Here, we test the monophyly of Parapiptadenia, Pityrocarpa and Pseudopiptadenia with dense taxon sampling across these genera, including the type species of each genus. Our analysis recovers Parapitadenia as monophyletic, but places Pseudopiptadenia species in two distinct lineages, one of which includes all three species of Pityrocarpa. Given that the type species of both Pseudopiptadenia and Pityrocarpa are nested in the same clade, we subsume Pseudopiptadenia under the older name Pityrocarpa. The remaining Pseudopiptadenia species are assigned to the new genus Marlimorimia. Alongside high molecular phylogenetic support, recognition of Parapiptadenia, Pityrocarpa and Marlimorimia as distinct genera is also supported by combinations of morphological traits, several of which were previously overlooked.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for the charged lepton-flavor-violating decays ϒ(1S) → ℓ ± ℓ′∓ and radiative charged lepton-flavour-violating decays ϒ(1S) → γ ℓ ± ℓ′∓ [ℓ,ℓ′ = e, μ, τ] using the 158 million ϒ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. This search uses ϒ(1S) mesons produced in ϒ(2S) → π + π − ϒ(1S) transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Abstract We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the τ lepton (dτ) using an 833 fb −1 data sample collected near the Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of d τ as Re(d τ ) = (−0.62 ± 0.63) × 10 −17 ecm and Im(d τ ) = (−0.40 ± 0.32) × 10 −17 ecm, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

Abstract: Abstract We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pη′ with η′ → ηπ + π − , using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 fb −1, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − asymmetric-energy collider. A significant Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pη′ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4σ. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pK − π + is measured to be B Λ c + → pη ′ B Λ c + → pK − π + = 7.54 ± 1.32 ± 0.73 × 10 − 3 , $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p\eta^{\prime}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)}=\left(7.54\pm 1.32\pm 0.73\right)\times {10}^{-3}, $$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of B Λ c + → pK − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ = (6.28 ± 0.32) × 10 −2, we obtain B Λ c + → pη ′ = 4.73 ± 0.82 ± 0.46 ± 0.24 × 10 − 4 , $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p\eta^{\prime}\right)=\left(4.73\pm 0.82\pm 0.46\pm 0.24\right)\times {10}^{-4}, $$ where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B Λ c + → pK − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , respectively.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 (also known as γ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B + → D ( K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ h + h − )h +, where D is either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson and h is either a π or K. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 128 fb −1, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e + e − collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ 3 = (78.4 ± 11.4 ± 0.5 ± 1.0)°, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the D-decay strong-phase parameters.

23. Adopt a Lake: Successfully Tracking Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms in Canadian Surface Waters Through Citizen Science

Abstract: The proliferation of harmful waterborne cyanobacterial algal blooms, some of which can produce potent toxins, poses severe risks to environmental and human health. Academic and governmental monitoring efforts may be constrained by budget, time, and staff, and thus miss otherwise significant pollution events. Here, we report on the implementation of a citizen science project to track harmful cyanobacterial blooms in lakes and waterways across Canada. Through both crowdsourcing and crowdfunding, the Adopt a Lake (Adopt a Lake 2022) campaign aimed to document the potential presence of cyanobacteria and toxins with the assistance of participants, thus improving public awareness of the issue of water quality preservation. Using social media, participants were encouraged to participate in the initiative by collecting samples during a bloom from a nearby pond or by making a financial contribution to support the initiative. Adopt a Lake benefitted from the analytical platform of Algal Blooms Treatment, Risk Assessment, Predictions, and Prevention (ATRAPP), a research project focused on the prediction and management of harmful cyanobacterial blooms. The presence of cyanotoxins, which can confirm whether a lake has a toxic bloom, was determined through high-resolution mass spectrometry analyses. This paper presents an overview of the implementation of the Adopt a Lake initiative, the campaign’s status, and the lessons learned, and it argues the importance of continual monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms.

24. Discovery and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of a Cyanobacterial Fatty Acid Targeting the Keap1/Nrf2 Pathway

Abstract: The monounsaturated fatty acid 7(E)-9-keto-hexadec-7-enoic acid (1) and three structurally related analogues with different oxidation states and degrees of unsaturation (2–4) were discovered from a marine benthic cyanobacterial mat collected from Delta Shoal, Florida Keys. Their structures were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The structure of 1 contained an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system, a key motif required for the activation of the Keap1/Nrf2−ARE pathway that is involved in the activation of antioxidant and phase II detoxification enzymes. Compounds 1–4 were screened in ARE-luciferase reporter gene assay using stably transfected HEK293 cells, and only 1 significantly induced Nrf2 activity at 32 and 10 µM, whereas 2–4 were inactive. As there is crosstalk between inflammation and oxidative stress, subsequent biological studies were focused on 1 to investigate its anti-inflammatory potential. Compound 1 induced Nqo1, a well-known target gene of Nrf2, and suppressed iNos transcript levels, which translated into reduced levels of nitric oxide in LPS-activated mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells, a more relevant model for inflammation. RNA sequencing was performed to capture the effects of 1 on a global level and identified additional canonical pathways and upstream regulators involved in inflammation and immune response, particularly those related to multiple sclerosis. A targeted survey of marine cyanobacterial samples from other geographic locations, including Guam, suggested the widespread occurrence of 1. Furthermore, the previous isolation of 1 from marine diatoms and green algae implied a potentially important ecological role across marine algal eukaryotes and prokaryotes. The previous isolation from sea lettuce raises the possibility of dietary intervention to attenuate inflammation and related disease progression.

25. Year-long monitoring of phytoplankton community, toxigenic cyanobacteria, and total microcystins in a eutrophic tropical dam supplying the Mexico megacity

Abstract: The Valle de Bravo dam is an important source of drinking water supply for the Mexico City Conurbation (>26 million inhabitants) and is also a hotspot for nautical sports, recreational fishing, and tourism. However, anthropogenic pressures in the upper reaches of the basin have led to increased eutrophication and numerous harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs). To determine the effect of abiotic variables on the characteristics of the phytoplanktonic community, as well as their influence on the diversity of toxigenic cyanobacteria and related cyanotoxins, we evaluated monthly variations in environmental factors, phytoplankton biovolume and composition and total microcystins in Valle de Bravo dam during the year of 2019. Overall, 75 phytoplanktonic species were identified, mostly belonging to the divisions Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, and Bacillariophyta. Cyanobacteria presented the highest biomass throughout the year, with water temperature and rainfall being the best correlated factors. The highest concentrations of total microcystins were recorded from July to September (maximum of 71 μg L−1), associated with the dominance of species such as M. smithii, M. aeruginosa, M. viridis M. flos-aquae, Aphanocapsa planctonica, and Dolichospermum crassum, and environmental factors such as rainfall, total dissolved solids, water temperature, and specific trace metals. In all months except December, the total cyanobacterial biovolume was above the World Health Organization alert level two, indicating potentially high risks to human health. The predominance of cyanobacteria and high biovolumes classified water quality as poor to very poor during most of the year. To avoid the development of HCBs in this dam, the contribution of nutrients by the tributary rivers and sewage must be controlled, since the poor-quality conditions of the water threaten the aquatic biota, the sports and recreation activities and affect the potable water supply.

Abstract: Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

28. Use of the AFX Stent Graft in Patients with Extremely Narrow Aortic Bifurcation: A Multicenter Retrospective Study

Abstract: Introduction. This study analyzed the patient outcomes following endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) for infrarenal aortic pathologies with very narrow aortic bifurcations using the AFX stent graft. Methods. The data was retrieved from the archived medical records of 35 patients treated for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) (48.6%) or penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU) (51.4%) with very narrow aortic bifurcation between January 2013 and May 2020. Patient survival, freedom from endoleak (EL), and limb occlusion were estimated applying the Kaplan–Meier method. Results. The mean follow-up time was 20.4±22.8 months. The mean aortic bifurcation diameter was 15.8±2.2 mm. Technical success was 100%, and no procedure-related deaths occurred. Two type II ELs occurred within 30-day follow-up. We observed one common iliac artery stenosis at four months and one type III EL at 54 months in the same patient, both of which required re-intervention. Overall patient survival was 95±5% (AAA: 100%; PAU: 89±10%), freedom from limb occlusion was 94±5% (AAA: 91±9%; PAU: 100%), freedom from type II EL was 94±4% (AAA: 88±8%; PAU: 100%), and freedom from EL type III was 83±15% (AAA: 80±18%; PAU: 100%) at the end of the follow-up period. Conclusions. Very narrow aortic bifurcations may predispose patients to procedure-related complications following EVAR. Our results suggest a safe use of the AFX stent graft in such scenarios. The overall short- and long-term procedure-related patient outcomes are satisfying albeit they may seem superior for PAU when compared to AAA.

Abstract: The neurotoxic alkaloid β-N-methyl-amino-l-alanine (BMAA) and related isomers, including N-(2-aminoethyl glycine) (AEG), β-amino-N-methyl alanine (BAMA), and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB), have been reported previously in cyanobacterial samples. However, there are conflicting reports regarding their occurrence in surface waters. In this study, we evaluated the impact of amending lake water samples with trichloroacetic acid (0.1 M TCA) on the detection of BMAA isomers, compared with pre-existing protocols. A sensitive instrumental method was enlisted for the survey, with limits of detection in the range of 5–10 ng L−1. Higher detection rates and significantly greater levels (paired Wilcoxon’s signed-rank tests, p < 0.001) of BMAA isomers were observed in TCA-amended samples (method B) compared to samples without TCA (method A). The overall range of B/A ratios was 0.67–8.25 for AEG (up to +725%) and 0.69–15.5 for DAB (up to +1450%), with absolute concentration increases in TCA-amended samples of up to +15,000 ng L−1 for AEG and +650 ng L−1 for DAB. We also documented the trends in the occurrence of BMAA isomers for a large breadth of field-collected lakes from Brazil, Canada, France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Data gathered during this overarching campaign (overall, n = 390 within 45 lake sampling sites) indicated frequent detections of AEG and DAB isomers, with detection rates of 30% and 43% and maximum levels of 19,000 ng L−1 and 1100 ng L−1, respectively. In contrast, BAMA was found in less than 8% of the water samples, and BMAA was not found in any sample. These results support the analyses of free-living cyanobacteria, wherein BMAA was often reported at concentrations of 2–4 orders of magnitude lower than AEG and DAB. Seasonal measurements conducted at two bloom-impacted lakes indicated limited correlations of BMAA isomers with total microcystins or chlorophyll-a, which deserves further investigation.

Abstract: Abstract The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an option for a future $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} $$ e + e - collider operating at centre-of-mass energies up to $$3\,\text {TeV} $$ 3 TeV , providing sensitivity to a wide range of new physics phenomena and precision physics measurements at the energy frontier. This paper is the first comprehensive presentation of the Higgs physics reach of CLIC operating at three energy stages: $$\sqrt{s} = 350\,\text {GeV} $$ s = 350 GeV , 1.4 and $$3\,\text {TeV} $$ 3 TeV . The initial stage of operation allows the study of Higgs boson production in Higgsstrahlung ( $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ e + e - → Z H ) and $${\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ W W -fusion ( $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{H}} {{\nu }}_{\!\mathrm{e}} {\bar{{\nu }}}_{\!\mathrm{e}} $$ e + e - → H ν e ν ¯ e ), resulting in precise measurements of the production cross sections, the Higgs total decay width $$\varGamma _{{\mathrm{H}}}$$ Γ H , and model-independent determinations of the Higgs couplings. Operation at $$\sqrt{s} > 1\,\text {TeV} $$ s > 1 TeV provides high-statistics samples of Higgs bosons produced through $${\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ W W -fusion, enabling tight constraints on the Higgs boson couplings. Studies of the rarer processes $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow \mathrm{t} {\bar{\mathrm{t}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ e + e - → t t ¯ H and $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{H}} {\mathrm{H}} {{\nu }}_{\!\mathrm{e}} {\bar{{\nu }}}_{\!\mathrm{e}} $$ e + e - → H H ν e ν ¯ e allow measurements of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs boson self-coupling. This paper presents detailed studies of the precision achievable with Higgs measurements at CLIC and describes the interpretation of these measurements in a global fit.

Abstract: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international, world-class experiment aimed at exploring fundamental questions about the universe that are at the forefront of astrophysics and particle physics research. DUNE will study questions pertaining to the preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of supernovae, the subtleties of neutrino interaction physics, and a number of beyond the Standard Model topics accessible in a powerful neutrino beam. A critical component of the DUNE physics program involves the study of changes in a powerful beam of neutrinos, i.e., neutrino oscillations, as the neutrinos propagate a long distance. The experiment consists of a near detector, sited close to the source of the beam, and a far detector, sited along the beam at a large distance. This document, the DUNE Near Detector Conceptual Design Report (CDR), describes the design of the DUNE near detector and the science program that drives the design and technology choices. The goals and requirements underlying the design, along with projected performance are given. It serves as a starting point for a more detailed design that will be described in future documents.

Abstract: The shortcomings of qualitative visual assessment have led to the development of computer-based tools to characterise and quantify disease on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). Quantitative CT (QCT) software enables quantification of patterns on HRCT with results that are objective, reproducible, sensitive to change and predictive of disease progression. Applications developed to provide a diagnosis or pattern classification are mainly based on artificial intelligence. Deep learning, which identifies patterns in high-dimensional data and maps them to segmentations or outcomes, can be used to identify the imaging patterns that most accurately predict disease progression. Optimisation of QCT software will require the implementation of protocol standards to generate data of sufficient quality for use in computerised applications and the identification of diagnostic, imaging and physiological features that are robustly associated with mortality for use as anchors in the development of algorithms. Consortia such as the Open Source Imaging Consortium have a key role to play in the collation of imaging and clinical data that can be used to identify digital imaging biomarkers that inform diagnosis, prognosis and response to therapy. Abstract: FOXP proteins form a subfamily of evolutionarily conserved transcription factors involved in the development and functioning of several tissues, including the central nervous system. In humans, mutations in FOXP1 and FOXP2 have been implicated in cognitive deficits including intellectual disability and speech disorders. Drosophila exhibits a single ortholog, called FoxP, but due to a lack of characterized mutants, our understanding of the gene remains poor. Here we show that the dimerization property required for mammalian FOXP function is conserved in Drosophila. In flies, FoxP is enriched in the adult brain, showing strong expression in ~1000 neurons of cholinergic, glutamatergic and GABAergic nature. We generate Drosophila loss-of-function mutants and UAS-FoxP transgenic lines for ectopic expression, and use them to characterize FoxP function in the nervous system. At the cellular level, we demonstrate that Drosophila FoxP is required in larvae for synaptic morphogenesis at axonal terminals of the neuromuscular junction and for dendrite development of dorsal multidendritic sensory neurons. In the developing brain, we find that FoxP plays important roles in α-lobe mushroom body formation. Finally, at a behavioral level, we show that Drosophila FoxP is important for locomotion, habituation learning and social space behavior of adult flies. Our work shows that Drosophila FoxP is important for regulating several neurodevelopmental processes and behaviors that are related to human disease or vertebrate disease model phenotypes. This suggests a high degree of functional conservation with vertebrate FOXP orthologues and established flies as a model system for understanding FOXP related pathologies.

Abstract: The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), suspected to trigger neurodegenerative diseases, can be produced during cyanobacterial bloom events and subsequently affect ecosystems and water sources. Some of its isomers including β-amino-N-methylalanine (BAMA), N-(2-aminoethyl) glycine (AEG), and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) may show different toxicities than BMAA. Here, we set out to provide a fast and sensitive method for the monitoring of AEG, BAMA, DAB and BMAA in surface waters. A procedure based on aqueous derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC-Cl) was investigated for this purpose. Under optimized conditions, a small aqueous sample aliquot (5 mL) was spiked with BMAA-d3 internal standard, subjected to FMOC-Cl derivatization, centrifuged, and analyzed. The high-throughput instrumental method (10 min per sample) involved on-line pre-concentration and desalting coupled to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). Chromatographic gradient and mobile phases were adjusted to obtain suitable separation of the 4 isomers. The method limits of detection were in the range of 2-5 ng L-1. In-matrix validation parameters including linearity range, accuracy, precision, and matrix effects were assessed. Abstract: High concentration of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy ($\text{NV}^{-}$) centers was created in diamond single crystals containing approximately 100 ppm nitrogen using electron and neutron irradiation and subsequent thermal annealing in a stepwise manner. Continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to determine the transformation efficiency from isolated N atoms to $\text{NV}^{-}$ centers in each production step and its highest value was as high as 17.5 %. Charged vacancies are formed after electron irradiation as shown by EPR spectra, but the thermal annealing restores the sample quality as the defect signal diminishes. We find that about 25 % of the vacancies form NVs during the annealing process. The large $\text{NV}^{-}$ concentration allows to observe orientation dependent spin-relaxation times and also the determination of the hyperfine and quadrupole coupling constants with high precision using electron spin echo (ESE) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR). We also observed the EPR signal associated with the so-called W16 centers, whose spectroscopic properties might imply a nitrogen dimer-vacancy center for its origin.

Abstract: We report an improved measurement of D0–D‾0 mixing and a search for CP violation in D0 decays to CP-even final states K+K− and π+π−. The measurement is based on the final Belle data sample of 976 fb−1. The results are yCP=(1.11±0.22±0.09)% and AΓ=(−0.03±0.20±0.07)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: Resume Introduction L’expression clinique initiale de la maladie de Whipple (MW) peut mimer un rhumatisme inflammatoire chronique (RIC) et son diagnostic au cours d’un traitement par anti-TNF a ete rapporte dans la litterature depuis plusieurs annees, incluant des formes severes. L’impact de ce type de traitement sur le rapport hote-pathogene est fortement suspecte. La frequence du portage asymptomatique de Tropheryma whipplei dans la population generale complique le diagnostic positif d’une MW devant un RIC non classe. Observations Nous rapportons ici trois observations illustrant des situations redevables d’une recherche de T. whipplei au titre du diagnostic differentiel au cours de la prise en charge d’un rhumatisme inflammatoire. Conclusion L’evaluation clinique individuelle doit guider non seulement l’indication de la recherche de T. whipplei au cours d’un RIC, notamment en cas d’aggravation paradoxale sous traitement, de presentation ou d’evolution atypique, mais egalement l’interpretation des resultats de la biologie moleculaire et de l’anatomopathologie dont la rentabilite peut etre modifiee par les traitements immunomodulateurs. Une strategie de depistage systematique de T. whipplei avant traitement par anti-TNF parait deraisonnable.

Abstract: — Mimosa is a species-rich genus with about 600 species distributed mainly in the Neotropics. Mimosa is especially diverse in the Cerrado where the genus shows high levels of endemism, but it is also represented in the Caatinga (the Brazilian seasonally dry vegetations). Four new species are described here, M. emaensis and M. sevilhae from the Cerrado, M. afranioi from the Caatinga, and M. robsonii from the Atlantic domain. We assessed their informal conservation status and two species would likely be categorized as Endangered (EN), one as Vulnerable (VU) to extinction, and one as Data Deficient (DD).

42. Aptamer Profiling of A549 Cells Infected with Low-Pathogenicity and High-Pathogenicity Influenza Viruses

Abstract: Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are important animal and human emerging and re-emerging pathogens that are responsible for yearly seasonal epidemics and sporadic pandemics. IAVs cause a wide range of clinical illnesses, from relatively mild infections by seasonal strains, to acute respiratory distress during infections with highly pathogenic avian IAVs (HPAI). For this study, we infected A549 human lung cells with lab prototype A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) (PR8), a seasonal H1N1 (RV733), the 2009 pandemic H1N1 (pdm09), or with two avian strains, an H5N1 HPAI strain or an H7N9 strain that has low pathogenicity in birds but high pathogenicity in humans. We used a newly-developed aptamer-based multiplexed technique (SOMAscan®) to examine >1300 human lung cell proteins affected by the different IAV strains, and identified more than 500 significantly dysregulated cellular proteins. Our analyses indicated that the avian strains induced more profound changes in the A549 global proteome compared to all tested low-pathogenicity H1N1 strains. The PR8 strain induced a general activation, primarily by upregulating many immune molecules, the seasonal RV733 and pdm09 strains had minimal effect upon assayed molecules, and the avian strains induced significant downregulation, primarily in antimicrobial response, cardiovascular and post-translational modification systems.

Abstract: The Amazon forest is far from uniform, containing different forest types and even savannas, but quantitative analyses of this variation are lacking. Here, we applied ordination analyses to test the floristic differentiation among Amazonian vegetation types using data for virtually all known tree species occurring in the Amazon (8224), distributed across 1584 sites. We also performed multiple regressions to assess the role of climate and substrate in shaping continental‐scale patterns of community composition across Amazonia. We find that the traditional classification of Amazonian vegetation types is consistent with quantitative patterns of tree species composition. High elevation and the extremes of substrate‐related factors underpin the floristic segregation of environmentally “marginal” vegetation types and terra firme forests with climatic factors being relatively unimportant. These patterns hold at continental scales, with sites of similar vegetation types showing higher similarity between them regardless of geographic distance, which contrasts with the idea of large‐scale variation among geographic regions (e.g., between the Guiana Shield and southwestern Amazon) representing the dominant floristic pattern in the Amazon. In contrast to other tropical biomes in South America, including the Mata Atlântica (second largest rain forest biome in the neotropics), the main floristic units in the Amazon are not geographically separated, but are edaphically driven and spatially interdigitated across Amazonia. Two thirds of terra firme tree species are restricted to this vegetation type, while among marginal vegetation types, only white‐sand forests (campinaranas) have a substantial proportion of restricted species, with other vegetation types sharing large numbers of species.

Abstract: Phytolith reference collections of plants and surface soils are a critical part of studies that use these microbotanical remains for archaeological and paleoecological reconstruction. In the archaeologically-rich region of the Upper Madeira river in Rondonia, Brazil, phytolith analysis is being applied in both on- and off-site contexts in order to shed light on human-environment interactions over a period that extends almost the entire Holocene. The present study brings together data on phytolith production patterns among 90 native species, representing 36 plant families, as well as 56 surface soil samples taken from underneath 11 monitored forest plots. Our discussion focuses on the comparison between the surface soil phytolith records and the above-ground floristic inventories, scrutinized considering the plant reference collection results. We found that the phytoliths of several species which produce diagnostic or potentially-diagnostic morphotypes were under-represented in the surface soils, including several understory herbs. While the phytolith assemblages from three forest types (palm, sororoca and dense forest) presented considerable overlap, in accordance with similarities in the floristic inventories, bamboo forest and different types of campinaranas were able to be distinguished based on their phytolith signatures.

Abstract: Tiermodelle haben unser Verstandnis um die Mechanismen der Atherosklerosebildung und der Bewertung von Therapiemoglichkeiten deutlich verbessert. Der aktuelle Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf praventiven Strategien und umfasst pharmakologische und biologische Interventionen, die sich primar gegen die Proliferation von glatten Muskelzellen richten. Zudem werden endovaskulare Techniken zur Rekanalisation und/oder Wirkstoffabgabe sowie integrierte Ansatze mit Geraten und pharmakobiologischen Wirkstoffen intensiv erforscht. Die jahrzehntelange Erfahrung mit Tiermodellen in der Gefasforschung hat gezeigt, dass es kein einzelnes, fur alle Zwecke einsetzbares Modell der Atheroskleroseforschung gibt. Die Spannweite reicht dabei von Grostieren wie dem Schwein bis hin zu Kleintierversuchen mit genetisch veranderten Nagern wie z. B. der ApoE−/−-Maus (Apolipoprotein-E-defiziente Maus) mit entsprechend unterschiedlich stark ausgepragten Veranderungen in ihren Lipid- und Lipoproteinspiegeln. Die Entwicklung transgener Varianten von derzeit verfugbaren Modellen hat unsere Moglichkeiten bereits in der Vergangenheit und auch fur die Zukunft erweitert. Dennoch ist ein Verstandnis der individuellen Merkmale einer Erkrankung bei jeder Tierspezies von Bedeutung, um das Versuchsdesign valide planen und durchfuhren zu konnen.

Abstract: Die chronische lymphatische Leukamie (CLL) ist die haufigste Leukamie in der westlichen Welt. Das mediane Erkrankungsalter betragt 72 Jahre, und Manner sind mit einem Verhaltnis von 1,7:1 beinahe doppelt so haufig betroffen wie Frauen. Zur Diagnose sind Differentialblutbild, Blutausstrich und eine Durchflusszytometrie zum Nachweis monoklonaler, typischerweise CD5/CD23-positiver B‑Lymphozyten erforderlich. Neben der klinischen Stadieneinteilung nach Binet oder Rai ist insbesondere die genetische Risikoeinteilung von hoher prognostischer Aussagekraft und entscheidend fur die Wahl der geeigneten Therapie. Vor Therapieeinleitung muss daher die Bestimmung des TP53-Mutationsstatus bzw. einer del17p sowie des IGHV-Mutationsstatus („immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable“) erfolgen. Asymptomatische Patienten im fruhen Stadium benotigen keine Therapie. Eine Therapieindikation ergibt sich erst in fortgeschrittenen Stadien, z. B. im Rahmen einer zunehmenden Knochenmarkinsuffizienz oder relevanter B‑Symptomatik. Zielgerichtete Substanzen wie Ibrutinib oder Venetoclax + Obinutuzumab erhalten zunehmend Einzug in die Erstlinienbehandlung, insbesondere bei Patienten mit rascher proliferierender CLL und unmutiertem IgHV-Status. Bei „fitten“ Patienten mit mutiertem IGHV-Status und ohne TP53-Veranderung kann zudem eine Chemoimmuntherapie mit Fludarabin, Cyclophosphamid + Rituximab aufgrund exzellenter Langzeitergebnisse erwogen werden. Bei „unfitten“ Patienten konnen weniger intensive Chemoimmuntherapien eingesetzt werden. Bei Rezidiven >3 Jahre nach der initialen Therapie kann eine Chemoimmuntherapie erneut eingesetzt werden. Im Fall eines Fruhrezidivs sollte ein Wechsel auf eine andere zielgerichtete Substanz angestrebt werden.
