Using elicitors is one of the innovative techniques being currently applied for improving phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and bioactive compounds in ready-to-eat sprouts. Therefore, this experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of melatonin (MT), as an elicitor, on mung bean germination and its sprout’s yield and nutraceutical quality for a 5-day period during seed germination. Results showed that the processes involved on the 5 th day of germination led to an increase in total soluble protein (TSP), free amino acids (FAA), vitamin C, and antioxidant activity in the treated mung bean sprouts. In contrast, as time goes by, the rate of titratable acidity (TA), total phenolic content (TPC), flavonoid compounds, and reducing power decreased. Moreover, MT increased the percentage of seed germination (18.84%) and sprout weight (25%), as compared to the controls. Eliciting the seed of mung bean with MT resulted in enhancing total soluble solids (TSS), TSP, FAA, and reducing power. In the sprouts of mung beans, similarly, it increased the TPC, flavonoid compounds, vitamin C, and antioxidant potential. In conclusion, using MT could change the phytochemical profiles of ready-to-eat sprouts and improve the health-promoting potential of produced sprouts during germination.

Abstract Salinity stress is one of the most serious abiotic factors that affects the growth, performance, and secondary compounds of medicinal plants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of foliar application of selenium and nano-selenium separately on growth, essential oils, physiological parameters, and some secondary metabolites of Lemon verbena under salinity stress. The results showed that selenium and nano-selenium significantly increased growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and relative water content. Compared to the control, a higher accumulation of osmolytes (i.e., proline, soluble sugars, and total protein) and higher antioxidant activity were observed in the selenium-treated plants. In addition, selenium alleviated the adversary effect of oxidative stress, resulting from salinity, by reducing leaf electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, and H2O2 accumulation. Furthermore, selenium and nano-selenium enhanced the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites such as essential oils, total phenolic content, and flavonoid compounds under non-stress and salinity conditions. They also reduced Na+ accumulation in the root and shoot of the salinity-treated plants. Hence it can be concluded that exogenous application of selenium and nano-selenium separately can mitigate the negative effects of salinity by improving the quantitative and qualitative performance of lemon verbena plants under salinity stress.

Introduction: Button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus L.) is one of the most popular and widely consumed edible mushrooms that is grown all over the world. However, button mushrooms have a short shelf life of about 3 to 4 days after harvest and lose their commercial value within a few days due to browning of the tissue, water loss, aging and microbial attack. Tissue browning is caused by the activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in plastids on phenolic compounds in the vacuoles as a substrate. Therefore, enzymatic browning is intensified by the loss of membrane integrity due to aging and tissue deterioration and as a result of physical connection between the enzyme and the substrate. The use of some techniques such as the chemicals and physical treatments gives promising results in delaying Browning and increasing the shelf life of edible mushrooms. Cinnamic acid (CA) is an organic acid that occurs naturally in plants and has low toxicity and a wide range of biological activities. Cinnamic acid and its derivatives are widely used in food industry. This compound acts as an inhibitor of polyphenol oxidase activity. On the other hand, cinnamic acid in low concentration has been proposed as an activator of the antioxidant system and its positive effects on reducing the effects of environmental stresses in various plants have been proven in several experiments. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of cinnamic acid treatment on reducing the browning of the tissue and maintaining the quality of white button mushrooms in the post-harvest period has been investigated. Materials and Methods: Treatments included exogenous application of cinnamic acid at four levels (control, 100, 200 and 400 μM trans cinnamic acid) and storage time at five times (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 days after storage). Cinnamic acid treatment at the mentioned concentrations was applied by top application 24 hours before mushroom harvest. Distilled water was used for control treatment. At the time of picking, infected, very large and small mushrooms were removed and the same mushrooms with a cap diameter of 40 to 45 mm were collected for each experimental treatment. After harvesting, the mushrooms were placed in a polyethylene box covered with cellophane and after weighing, they were transferred to an incubator at 4°C. In the post-harvest period, different traits were measured with a four day interva. Results and Discussion: The results showed that by increasing storage time, the activity of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase increased and consequently the browning of the tissue also had an increasing trend. Also, with increasing storage time, weight loss percentage, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde increased and total phenol and total antioxidant capacity were decreased. The use of cinnamic acid treatment in all three concentrations (100, 200 and 400 μM) reduced the activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase activities and reduced tissue browning. The application of cinnamic acid also improved the quality traits of edible mushrooms such as total phenol, total antioxidant capacity and visual quality index. These findings suggest that application of cinnamic acid, especially at a concentration of 400 μM, could have the potential of inhibiting tissue browning and thus maintaining the mushrooms quality at the postharvest period

Chilling stress is of major limiting factors influencing the growth and development of warm-season crops like cucumber. In this research, the possibility of chilling tolerance of cucumber seedlings was investigated through employing the drought and low-temperature pretreatments. The factorial experiment consisted of two factors including cucumber cultivars (i.e. ‘Super Dominos’ and ‘Super Star’) and hardening treatments (control, low temperatures at 10°C, and 15°C and drought simulated by 10% and 20% PEG) based on completely randomized design (CRD) in 3 replications. After applying treatments and providing them 48 h opportunity to be recovered, the seedlings were subjected to 3°C for a six-day period and 6 h for each day. All hardening treatments improved seedlings’ growth, chlorophyll content, total phenol (TP) and antioxidant enzyme activities, while reducing chilling injury index and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Comparing to temperature hardening, the drought pretreatment showed to have a better effect on inducing the chilling tolerance into cultivars. Overall, the results of this experiment showed that employing drought and low-temperature pretreatments enabled cucumber seedlings to mitigate the harmful effects of chilling.

In order to evaluate the yield, yield components and some physiological and qualitative traits of corn treated with nitrogen fertilizers (biological, chemical and integrated), a field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station of Khorramabad during 2016 growing season. Treatments were arranged in a complete randomized block design with four replications. Experimental treatments consisted of 100% chemical fertilizer (urea), bio-fertilizer (nitroxin), integration of bio-fertilizer + 25% chemical fertilizer, integration of bio-fertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer, integration of bio-fertilizer + 75% chemical fertilizer and the control. Results showed that the effect of different treatments of fertilizers on all measured traits, except for number of rows in each ear and carotenoids, was significant. The results indicated that integration of bio-fertilizer + 75% chemical fertilizer affected the highest grain yield (9.31 t ha–1), dry biological yield (20.96 t ha–1), number of kernels in each row (41.67), plant height (201.02 cm), hectoliter weight (0.82 g cm–3), chlorophyll b (0.43 mg g–1 FW), total chlorophyll (1.1 mg g–1 FW) and leaf area index (LAI) (4) and there was no significant difference among this treatment and 100% chemical fertilizer (N) and integration of bio-fertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer treatments in all measured traits. The greatest harvest index (45.8) and grain protein-content (9.1%) resulted from the integration of biofertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer treatment. Also the highest 1000-grains weight (281.13 g) and chlorophyll a (0.66 mg g–1 FW) were caused by 100% chemical fertilizer (urea) treatments. Results showed that integration of bio-fertilizer + chemical fertilizer could be considered as a means to reduce the consumption of chemical fertilizers for sustainable agriculture.

Chilling temperatures lead to numerous physiological disturbances in the cells of chilling-sensitive plants and result in chilling injury and death of tropical and subtropical plants such as watermelon. In this study, the possibility of cold stress tolerance enhancing of watermelon seedling (Citrullus lanatus) by exogenous application of Salicylic acid (SA) was investigated. SA was applied through seed soaking or foliar spray at 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mM concentration. After SA treatment, the seedlings were subjected to chilling 5 h/day at 4°C for 5 days. Statistical analysis showed significant effects of the application methods and SA concentrations on plant growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, electrolyte leakage, proline and chilling injury index. SA application improved growth parameters and increased chlorophyll content of watermelon seedling subjected to chilling stress and provided significant protection against chilling stress compared to non-SA-treated seedlings. Although two SA application methods improved chilling stress tolerance, seed soaking method provided better protection compared to foliar spray method. SA ameliorated the injury caused by chilling stress via inhibiting proline accumulation and leaf electrolyte leakage. The highest cold tolerance was obtained with 0.5 mM SA application. Results indicate that SA could be used effectively to protect watermelon seedling from damaging effects of chilling stress at the early stages of growth.
