In 2024, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party celebrated 145 years of existence. The PSOE is a political long-liver, one of the oldest left-wing parties in the world, which has skillfully adapted to the needs of a transforming society, accepting new challenges and seeking opportunities for productive work. The historical path of the PSOE is a path accompanied by doubts, criticism, jealousy, denial and reproaches. This was the case a century ago, when the PSOE agreed to collaborate with the Primo de Rivera regime, and the same situation re-mains today, when the government of Pedro Sánchez is forced to balance and seek support, receiving endless reproaches for populism, corruption and incompetence. It is also certain that the history of the PSOE is the history of Spain of the last century and a half, where the party participated not as a witness, but as one of the main characters.

Any analysis of the digital narrative around the topic of Spain as a part of Europe has one of its most qualified exponents in the figure of Felipe González, whose career as a national political leader acquires its authentic dimension in the field of European integration, as corresponds to one of the protagonists of the great European cavalcade of the 80s and 90s. González also represents the canonical narrative that emerged during the Democratic Transition, a story of the reunion between Spain and Europe that is embedded in a pragmatic reflection on the future of Europe as a program of political action. Digital media, and especially those deposited in the Felipe González Foundation, allow us both to analyze this narrative and to reflect on the discursive strategies used by political actors in the politicization of "Europe."

This article analyses the evolution of US-Spain relationships from the Spanish Socialists’ victory in the 1982 elections to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The work draws on a variety of primary sources scarcely used to date. The debate regarding Spain’s NATO membership and its consequences for those relationships are examined in the first place. The second part deals with the 1986 Spanish Referendum and the renegotiation of the bilateral agreements leading to the Defense Cooperation Agreement in 1988. Finally, it illustrates to what extent the rebalancing of those relationships allowed Spain to extend her cooperation with the United States, on the basis of Felipe González’s and George H. W. Bush’s mutual trust generated thereafter.

La obra de Francisco Umbral (1932–2000) suele ser estudiada en sus aspectos literarios, o bien por su vinculación con el periodismo, pero cada vez se está prestando más atención a otros dos puntos cardinales: el sexo y la política. Este artículo avanza por esta segunda senda, a través de una de sus últimas novelas: El socialista sentimental (2000), sobre los años de gobierno del PSOE de Felipe González. Como es habitual en la producción literaria de Umbral, la novela tiene una fuerte carga autobiográfica, de modo que las ideas políticas incluidas reflejan las del propio autor, en libros de ensayo como La década roja (1993). Además, se estudian las estrategias narrativas con las que Umbral noveliza con humor estas ideas, mostrando, así, los modelos literarios de los que parte El socialista sentimental y, en particular, su deuda con el realismo de Benito Pérez Galdós y el neorrealismo de Miguel Delibes. The integration of Spain into NATO is one of the most controversial episodes in its recent democratic history. Through the following pages, a brief study will be shown about the period between the arrival of the Spanish Workers Socialist Party to the government in October 1982, and the referendum for the permanence of Spain in the Atlantic Alliance in 1986. The center of the study is PSOE and the evolution of the party regarding its position in foreign and security policy. The first part of the process was influenced by the joining of Spain to the European Economic Community. The second part of the study reflects some of the internal atmosphere of great tension in PSOE regarding NATO until the socialist referendum celebration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El presente artículo aborda la relación entre los medios de comunicación y la Transición española. La prensa tuvo un gran protagonismo durante esa etapa, al hacerse eco e impulsar la acción política en pro de la democracia. Con posterioridad, los medios han intentado gestionar el discurso sobre su significación actual. Dentro de esta lógica, la fotografía ha alcanzado un estatus singular gracias a su papel de cronista y su circulación posterior, una suerte de “memoria gráfica” llamada a contener los momentos decisivos del periodo. En este sentido, la foto de Felipe González y Alfonso Guerra, saludando desde el balcón del Hotel Palace la noche del 28 de octubre de 1982, se ha convertido en un icono de la Transición.

Resumen: Continuando con el análisis de los discursos de los líderes más importantes del proceso de Transición democrática en España, en esta entrega nos centramos en la trayectoria política de Felipe González y del socialismo español en esos años. En referencia a su recorrido, asistimos a dos tipos de discursos diferenciados. Por un lado contamos con las intervenciones parlamentarias, más numerosas, y que nos han permitido observar con mayor precisión las oscilaciones de su perfil con respecto al resto de grupos parlamentarios; por otro, los discursos pronunciados en los Congresos del partido, que han sido seleccionados por la relevancia de sus conclusiones, y cuya inclusión complementa y enriquece la explicación de los cambios producidos en las estrategias de su discurso. Una complementariedad que conforma de forma genérica el tipo de perfil y apunta las matizaciones del líder socialista durante el proceso de transición.Summary: In reference to González’s journey, we are present with two types of differentiated speeches. On the one hand we rely on the parliamentary, more numerous interventions, which have allowed us to observe with greater precision the oscillations of his profile with regard to the rest of parliamentary groups; on the other hand, the speeches declared in the Meetings of the political party, selected because of the relevance of their conclusions, and whose incorporation complements and enriches the explanation of the changes produced in the strategies of his speech. This complementary factor shapes the type of profile in a generic way and notes the nuances of the socialist leader during the process of transition.

In 1994 and 1996, the Victims of Terrorism Association commissioned people you trust to undertake a trip to some Latin American countries because they were certain that ETA members living there with impunity. The experts came back with an investigation that was published in the newspaper ABC in which charged that the Spanish government knew that these people were living in these countries and that did nothing to stop it. What the AVT and colleagues did not post was that these people were not members of ETA fugitives, as claimed, but a decision between the Spanish, French and certain countries governments, had been deported and that this was the reason that Spanish leaders maintained an unchanging attitude to the subject. Los conceptos nacen, crecen, se desarrollan y mueren, como consecuencia de su naturaleza contingente y vinculada a los avatares que afectan a sus creadores o defensores. De lo que no cabe duda es que la idea de la “Casa Común Europea” ha movilizado muchos recursos y capital humano. Ahora que la faz de Europa se ha transformado, la autora, hace un ejercicio de recapitulación de las andanzas de esta idea, nacida en el corazón de una Rusia soviética, y que fue acogida con extraordinaria resonancia por parte de un significativo grupo de dirigentes mundiales. El presente estudio parte de las ideas de algunos líderes europeos que han apoyado y concebido el edificio europeo, quienes conscientes de las luces y sombras del continente, buscan sintetizar en la Comunidad Europea los elementos de cohesión, flexibilidad y resistencia, trasmitiendo el entusiasmo necesario para que todas las naciones de Europa se unan en un proyecto compartido, que trasciende las meras individualidades y particularismos locales.
