This study reports the results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of the essential oil of Angelica archangelica L. (Apiaceae) roots, as well as its in vitro antifungal activity against 10 plant pathogenic fungi. Moreover, the essential oil was evaluated for its antifungal activity using the agar dilution method, and also minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum fungicidal concentrations were determined. The major compounds identified by GC-MS were α-pinene (21.3%), δ-3-carene (16.5%), limonene (16.4%), and a-phellandrene (8.7%). The oil showed in vitro antifungal activity against some species of the Fusarium genus, Botrytis cinerea, and Alternaria solani. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from Teucrium marum subsp. marum (Lamiaceae) was analysed by GC/MS and 30 components were identified. Isocaryophyllene (20.24%), beta-bisabolene (14.73%), beta-sesquiphellandrene (11.27%), alpha-santalene (10.97%), dolichodial (9.38%) and, alpha-caryophyllene (7.18%) were the main components. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was assayed against four phytopathogenic fungi and Rhyzoctonia solani resulted to be the most sensitive microorganism with a MIC value of 250 ppm. The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was evaluated using the DPPH test, 5-lipoxygenase test and luminol/xanthine/xanthine oxidase chemiluminescence assay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Vegetables of Rubus species are known to have antimicrobial properties mainly due to its high content in phenolic compounds. Among the 37 potentially pathogenic fungi screened with crude methanolic extract from micropropagated shoots of Rubus ulmifolius Schott, we show that the 70% of the species resulted variably sensitive to methanolic extract. Of the phenolic fractions obtained from the crude methanolic extract by hydrophobic interaction chromatography, those rich in tannins resulted active against the fungal strains tested, whereas those containing chlorogenic, caftaric acid and caffeoyl derivatives resulted partially effective. Our results suggest a potential utilization of the in vitro plant cultures of R. ulmifolius to provide standardized extracts from plant material grown in uniform conditions and available year round, which could be useful as natural antifungal agents. Methanolic extracts of micropropagated Rubus ulmifolius plantlets were tested for antimicrobial activity against different strains of food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Crude methanolic extract effectively reduced the growth (up to 70 and 90%) of seven Escherichia coli and five Salmonella strains, and caused a 40% and 10% growth inhibition on one strain of Pseudomonas spp. and Listeria monocytogenes, respectively. Tannin-rich fractions, obtained by crude extract fractionation, were active against E. coli (about 65% inhibition), while fractions containing chlorogenic acid or caftaric acid and caffeoyl derivatives were almost ineffective (about 10% inhibition). The results suggest that in vitro cultures of R. ulmifolius could be a source of secondary metabolites to be used as preservatives in food products and as antimicrobial agents.
