Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment devoted to the search of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) in 130Te. The CUORE detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals operated at 10 mK. CUORE-0 is the CUORE demonstrator: it has been built to test the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment and represents the largest 130Te bolometric setup ever operated. CUORE-0 has been running at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) from 2013 to 2015. The final CUORE-0 analysis on 0νββ and the corresponding detector performance are presented. The present status of the CUORE experiment, now in its final construction and commissioning phase, are discussed. The results from assembly of the detector and the commissioning of the cryostat are reported.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) in 130Te and other rare processes. CUORE is a cryogenic detector composed of 988 TeO2 bolometers for a total mass of about 741 kg. The detector is being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If the target background of 0.01 counts/(keV·kg·y) will be reached, in five years of data taking CUORE will have an half life sensitivity around 1 × 1026 y at 90% C.L. As a first step towards CUORE a smaller experiment CUORE-0, constructed to test and demonstrate the performances expected for CUORE, has been assembled and is running. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring 2013. The status and perspectives of CUORE will be discussed, and the first CUORE-0 data will be presented.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Abstract

The NPDGamma experiment will measure the parity-violating directional gamma ray asymmetry Aγ in the reaction ... + p → d = γ Ultimately, this will constitute the first measurement in the neutron-proton system that is sensitive enough to challenge modern theories of nuclear parity violation, providing a theoretically clean determination of the weak pion-nucleon coupling. A new beamline at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE ) delivers pulsed cold neutrons to the apparatus, where they are polarized by transmission through a large volume polarized 3 He spin filter and captured in a liquid para-hydrogen target. The 2.2 MeV gamma rays from the capture reaction are detected in an array of CsI(Tl) scintillators read out by vacuum photodiodes operated in current mode. We will complete commissioning of the apparatus and carry out a first measurement at LANSCE in 2004-05, which would provide a statistics-limited result for Aγ accurate to a standard uncertainty of ±5 x 10-8 level or better, improving on existing measurements in the neutron-proton system by a factor of 4. Plans to move the experiment to a reactor facility, where the greater flux would enable us to make a measurement with a standard uncertainty of ±1 x 10-8, are actively being pursued for the longer term. Abstract

The NPDGamma γ -ray detector has been built to measure, with high accuracy, the size of the small parity-violating asymmetry in the angular distribution of gamma rays from the capture of polarized cold neutrons by protons. The high cold neutron flux at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE) spallation neutron source and control of systematic errors require the use of current mode detection with vacuum photodiodes and low-noise solid-state preamplifiers. We show that the detector array operates at counting statistics and that the asymmetries due to B4C and 27Al are zero to within 2 x 106 and 7 x 1027 , respectively. Abstract

We describe an apparatus used to measure the triple-correlation term (Dσ⁁n·pe×pν) in the beta decay of polarized neutrons. The D coefficient is sensitive to possible violations of time reversal invariance. The detector has an octagonal symmetry that optimizes electron–proton coincidence rates and reduces systematic effects. A beam of longitudinally polarized cold neutrons passes through the detector chamber, where a small fraction undergo beta decay. The final-state protons are accelerated and focused onto arrays of cooled semiconductor diodes, while the coincident electrons are detected using panels of plastic scintillator. Details regarding the design and performance of the proton detectors, beta detectors, and the electronics used in the data collection system are presented. Abstract

At the 88 Inch Cyclotron at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) we have developed an intense (3 x 10[sup 7] pps), low-energy [sup 14]0 ion beam for precision tests of the standard model. The 70 s half-life of [sup 14]O requires on-line production of the isotope. [sup 14]O is produced in the form of [sup 12]C[sup 14]O in a high-temperature carbon aerogel target using a 20 MeV ³He beam from the LBNL 88 Inch Cyclotron via the reaction [sup 12]C(³He, n)[sup 14]O. In order to minimize the background radiation for the experiments, the [sup 14]O atoms must be separated from the other radioactive isotopes produced in the carbon target. For this purpose, we have developed an experimental setup including the target, transfer line, the electron cyclotron resonance ion source IRIS, and a low-energy ion beam transport line. The major components of the setup are described. The release and transport efficiency for the CO molecules from the target through the transfer line was measured for various target temperatures. Abstract

Background: The rate λppμ characterizes the formation of ppμ molecules in collisions of muonic pμ atoms with hydrogen. In measurements of the basic weak muon capture reaction on the proton to determine the pseudoscalar coupling gP, capture occurs from both atomic and molecular states. Thus knowledge of λppμ is required for a correct interpretation of these experiments. Purpose: Recently the MuCap experiment has measured the capture rate ΛS from the singlet pμ atom, employing a low-density active target to suppress ppμ formation [V. Andreev et al. (MuCap Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 012504 (2013)]. Nevertheless, given the unprecedented precision of this experiment, the existing experimental knowledge in λppμ had to be improved. Method: The MuCap experiment derived the weak capture rate from the muon disappearance rate in ultrapure hydrogen. By doping the hydrogen with 20 ppm of argon, a competing process to ppμ formation was introduced, which allowed the extraction of λppμ from the observed time distribution of decay electrons. Results: The ppμ formation rate was measured as λppμ=(2.01 ± 0.06stat ± 0.03sys) × 106 s−1. This result updates the λppμ value used in the abovementioned MuCap publication. Conclusions: The 2.5 × higher precision compared to earlier experiments, and the fact that the measurement was performed under nearly identical conditions as the main data taking, reduces the uncertainty induced by λppμ to a minor contribution to the overall uncertainty of ΛS and gP, as determined in the MuCap experiment. Abstract

The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute has measured the rate ΛS of muon capture from the singlet state of the muonic hydrogen atom to a precision of 1%. A muon beam was stopped in a time projection chamber filled with 10-bar, ultrapure hydrogen gas. Cylindrical wire chambers and a segmented scintillator barrel detected electrons from muon decay. ΛS is determined from the difference between the μ- disappearance rate in hydrogen and the free muon decay rate. The result is based on the analysis of 1.2×1010 μ- decays, from which we extract the capture rate ΛS=(714.9±5.4stat±5.1syst)s-1 and derive the proton’s pseudoscalar coupling gP(q02=-0.88mμ2)=8.06±0.55. Abstract

The valence neutron composition of the 130Te and 130Xe ground states has been studied with a view to constraining calculations of the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-β decay of 130Te. Single-neutron adding and removing reactions on 128 130Te and 130'132Xe have been used to probe the vacancy of the 0g7/2, 1d5/2, 2s1/2, 2s 1/2, and O/m1/2 Orbitals. The change in the vacancy of these orbitals, obtained through a self-consistent determination of spectroscopic factors utilizing the Macfarlane-French sum rules, for 130Te 130Xe is shared only between the d,S1/2, and h11/2 orbitals, with the g7/2 playing no significant role. This is in disagreement with recent calculations within both the quasiparticle random-phase approximation and shell-model frameworks, which show a role for the g7/2 orbital that should have been observable. Abstract

Background: Time-reversal-invariance violation, or equivalently CP violation, may explain the observed cosmological baryon asymmetry as well as indicate physics beyond the Standard Model. In the decay of polarized neutrons, the triple correlation D{Jn)/Jn . (ße χ ρv) is a parity-even, time-reversal-odd observable that is uniquely sensitive to the relative phase of the axial-vector amplitude with respect to the vector amplitude. The triple correlation is also sensitive to possible contributions from scalar and tensor amplitudes. Final-state effects contribute to D at the level of 10-5and can be calculated with a precision of 1% or better. Purpose: We have improved the sensitivity to Γ-odd, P-even interactions in nuclear β decay. Methods: We measured proton-electron coincidences from decays of longitudinally polarized neutrons with a highly symmetric detector array designed to cancel the time-reversal-even, parity-odd Standard-Model contributions to polarized neutron decay. Over 300 million proton-electron coincidence events were used to extract D and study systematic effects in a blind analysis. Results: We find D = [-0.94 ± 1.89(stat) ± 0.97(sys)] χ 10~4. This differs from the result of our recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 102301 (2011)] due to refinement of corrections for background and backscattering. Conclusions: This is the most sensitive measurement of D in nuclear β decay. Our result can be interpreted as a measurement of the phase of the ratio of the axial-vector and vector coupling constants (CA/CV = |?|eΑν) with φΑ v = 180.012° ± 0.028° (68% confidence level). This result can also be used to constrain time-reversal-violating scalar and tensor interactions that arise in certain extensions to the Standard Model such as leptoquarks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the results of an improved determination of the triple correlation DP (p X p,) that can be used to limit possible time-reversal invariance in the beta decay of polarized neutrons and constrain extensions to the standard model. Our result is D = [-0.96 ± l.89(stat) ± l.O1(sys)I X l0-4. The corresponding phase between gA and gv is çAv = 180.013° ± 0.028° (68% confidence level). Abstract

The NPDGamma collaboration reports results from the first phase of a measurement of the parity violating up-down asymmetry Aγ with respect to the neutron spin direction of γ rays emitted in the reaction n→+p→d+γ using the capture of polarized cold neutrons on the protons in a liquid parahydrogen target. One expects parity-odd effects in the hadronic weak interaction between nucleons to be induced by the weak interaction between quarks. Aγ in n→+p→d+γ is dominated by a ΔI=1, 3S1-3P1 parity-odd transition amplitude in the n-p system. The first phase of the measurement was completed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center spallation source (LANSCE), with the result Aγ=[-1.2±2.1 (stat.)±0.2 (sys.)]×10-7. We also report the first measurement of an upper limit for the parity-allowed left-right asymmetry in this reaction, with the result Aγ,LR,=[-1.8±1.9 (stat.)±0.2 (sys.)]×10-7. In this paper we give a detailed report on the theoretical background, experimental setup, measurements, extraction of parity-odd and parity-allowed asymmetries, analysis of potential systematic effects, and LANSCE results. The asymmetry has an estimated size of 5×10-8 and the aim of the NPDGamma collaboration is to measure it to 1×10-8.
