Coatings of anisotropic nanoparticles such as cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can provide tuneable physicochemical surface properties to a substrate such as modifying wettability. These coatings are often formed using dip coating, with CNCs enriched at the air–water interface transferred to a substrate as a monolayer. This process is commonly facilitated by surfactants, which can remain present in the final product, affecting coating properties. In this work, an "additive free" method for creating CNC coatings by exploiting electrostatic interactions within the pH window between pH 2–4 is demonstrated. Within this pH window, the air–water interface is positively charged and CNCs are negatively charged, with surface pressure tensiometry, X‐ray reflectivity, and Brewster angle microscopy indicating that CNCs are driven to the air–water interface. The optimal condition for monolayer coverage was pH 3; at pH 2 charge screening causes localized flocculation at the air–water interface, and at pH 4 interparticle repulsion leads to incomplete, patchy coverage. These findings successfully translate to dip coated CNC monolayers as characterized by atomic force microscopy, showing that the manipulation of pH can facilitate the surfactant‐free dip coating of CNCs, with advantages over the surfactants that are more typically used. Coating a substrate with anisotropic nanoparticles such as cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) confers some of their desirable physicochemical properties, such as strength, wettability, and barrier properties. The formation of monolayer coatings of CNCs via dip coating is affected by the enrichment of CNCs at both air–liquid and substrate–liquid interfaces. In this work, a surfactant‐free method for dip coating CNCs is presented through use of the hydrotrope tetraethylammonium chloride. Hydrotropes demonstrate a different mechanism for facilitating interfacial enrichment, adsorbing to CNCs and rendering them weakly hydrophobic, causing them to adsorb to both solid–liquid and air–liquid interfaces without affecting the surface tension of the system. This new coating mechanism may be more robust as adsorption onto the substrate from the bulk dispersion is less sensitive to the air–liquid interface. Adsorption at the solid–liquid interface showed two distinct CNC layers, with a tightly bound, close‐packed CNC layer at the interface, and a loosely associated outer layer. Adsorption of both layers is shown to be fully reversible after washing with ultra pure water, highlighting the potential of hydrotropes for facilitating new coating mechanisms. Ferroelectric materials contain regions of uniform electrical polarization, known as domains. In Pb‐based relaxor‐ferroelectric perovskite oxides, these domains can be as small as a few nanometers, making standardized analysis of domain sizes challenging. Here, we present two methods for the quantitative analysis of domain sizes from transmission electron micrographs. One method uses statistical analysis of multiple line profiles, and the other analyses the intensity of streaks in the Fourier transform of the image. The techniques provide equivalent results for bright‐field images free of other microstructure or aberrations, while the Fourier method is much simpler to apply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perfluorocarbon emulsion droplets are interesting colloidal systems with applications, ranging from diagnostics and theranostics to drug delivery, due to their controllable phase transition into microbubbles via heat application or acoustic droplet vapourisation. This work highlights the application of small- and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (SANS and USANS, respectively), in combination with contrast variation techniques, in observing the in situ phase transition of polydopamine-stabilised perfluorohexane (PDA/PFH) emulsion droplets into microbubbles during heating. Results show peak USANS intensities at temperatures around 90 °C, which indicates that the phase transition of PDA/PFH emulsion droplets occurs at significantly higher temperatures than the bulk boiling point of pure liquid PFH (56 °C). Analysis and model fitting of the SANS and USANS data allowed us to estimate droplet sizes and interfacial properties at different temperatures (20 °C, 90 °C, and 20 °C after cooling), giving valuable insights about the transformation of these polydisperse emulsion droplet systems. Light-responsive binary (azobenzene + solvent) lyotropic liquid crystals (LCs) were investigated by structural modification of simple azobenzene molecules. Three benzoic acid-containing azobenzene molecules 4-(4-(hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)benzoic acid (AZO1), 3-(4-(hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)benzoic acid (AZO2) and 5-(4-(hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)isophthalic acid (AZO3) were produced with various amide substitutions to produce tectons with a variety of hydrophobicity, size and branching. The LC mesophases formed by binary (azobenzene + solvent) systems with low volatility solvents dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as well as the protic ionic liquids ethylammonium formate (EAF) and propylammonium formate (PAF), were investigated using a combination of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) as well as polarising light microscopy (PLM). Increasing alkyl group length was found to have a strong influence on LC phase spacing, and changes in the position of substitution on the benzene ring influenced the preferred curvature of phases. UV-induced trans to cis isomerization of the samples was shown to influence ordering and optical birefringence, indicating potential applications in optical devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
