Abstract Objective Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the leading cause of angina, heart failure, and death from aortic stenosis. However, the molecular mechanisms of its progression, especially the complex disease-related transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, remain to be further elucidated. Methods This study used porcine valvular interstitial cells (PVIC) as a model. We used osteogenic induced medium (OIM) to induce calcium deposition in PVICs to calcify them, followed by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) treatment to inhibit calcium deposition. Transcriptome sequencing was used to study the mRNA expression profile of PVICs and its related transcriptional regulation. We used DaPars to further examine alternative polyadenylation (APA) between different treatment groups. Results We successfully induced calcium deposition of PVICs through OIM. Subsequently, mRNA-seq was used to identify differentially expressed mRNAs for three different treatments: control, OIM-induced and OIM-induced bFGF treatment. Global APA events were identified in the OIM and bFGF treatment groups by bioinformatics analysis. Finally, it was discovered and proven that catalase (CAT) is one of the potential targets of bFGF-induced APA regulation. Conclusion We described a global APA change in a calcium deposition model related to CAVD. We revealed that transcriptional regulation of the CAT gene may contribute to bFGF-induced calcium deposition inhibition.

Abstract In recent decades, polymer semiconductors, extensively employed as charge transport layers in devices like organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs), have undergone thorough investigation due to their capacity for large‐area solution processing, making them promising for mass production. Research efforts have been twofold: enhancing the charge mobilities of polymer semiconductors and augmenting their mechanical properties to meet the demands of flexible devices. Significant progress has been made in both realms, propelling the practical application of polymer semiconductors in flexible electronics. However, integrating excellent semiconducting and mechanical properties into a single polymer still remains a significant challenge. This review intends to introduce the design strategies and discuss the properties of high‐charge mobility stretchable conjugated polymers. In addition, another key challenge faced in this cutting‐edge field is maintaining stable semiconducting performance during long‐term mechanical deformations. Therefore, this review also discusses the development of healable polymer semiconductors as a promising avenue to improve the lifetime of stretchable device. In conclusion, challenges and outline future research perspectives in this interdisciplinary field are highlighted.

Moho tomography is important for studying the deep Earth structure and geodynamics, and fiber borehole strainmeters are broadband, low-noise, and attractive tools for seismic observation. Recently, many studies have shown that fiber optic seismic sensors can be used for subsurface structure imaging based on ambient noise cross-correlation, similar to conventional geophones. However, this array-dependent cross-correlation method is not suitable for fiber borehole strainmeters. Here, we developed a Moho imaging scheme for the characteristics of fiber borehole strainmeters based on ambient noise autocorrelation. S-wave reflection signals were extracted from the ambient noise through a series of processing steps, including phase autocorrelation (PAC), phase-weighted stacking (PWS), etc. Subsequently, the time-to-depth conversion crustal thickness beneath the station was calculated. We applied our scheme to continuous four-component recordings from four fiber borehole strainmeters in Lu’an, Anhui Province, China. The obtained Moho depth was consistent with the previous research results. Our work shows that this method is suitable for Moho imaging with fiber borehole strainmeters without relying on the number of stations.

BackgroundThe rate of breast-conserving surgery is very low in China, compared with that in developed countries; most breast cancer patients receive mastectomy. It is great important to explore the possibility of omitting axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 positive sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in China. The aim of this study was to develop a nomogram based on elastography for the prediction of the risk of non-SLN (NSLN) metastasis in early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 positive SLNs.MethodsA total of 601 breast cancer patients were initially recruited. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 118 early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 positive SLNs were finally enrolled and were assigned to the training cohort (n=82) and the validation cohort (n=36), respectively. In the training cohort, the independent predictors were screened by logistic regression analysis and then were used to conducted the nomogram for the prediction of NSLN metastasis in early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 positive SLNs. The calibration curves, concordance index (C-index), the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), and Decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to verified the performance of the nomogram.ResultsThe multivariable analysis showed that the enrolled patients with positive HER2 expression (OR=6.179, P=0.013), Ki67≥14% (OR=8.976, P=0.015), larger lesion size (OR=1.038, P=0.045), and higher Emean (OR=2.237, P=0.006) were observed to be the independent factors of NSLN metastasis. Based on the above four independent predictors, a nomogram was conducted to predict the risk of the NSLN metastasis in early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 positive SLNs. The nomogram showed good discrimination in the prediction of NSLN metastasis, with bias-corrected C-index of 0.855 (95% CI, 0.754-0.956) and 0.853 (95% CI, 0.724-0.983) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Furthermore, the AUC was 0.877 (95%CI: 0.776- 0.978) and 0.861 (95%CI: 0.732-0.991), respectively, indicating a good performance of the nomogram. The calibration curve suggested a satisfactory agreement between the predictive and actual risk in both the training (χ2 = 11.484, P=0.176, HL test) and validation (χ2 = 6.247, p = 0.620, HL test) cohorts, and the obvious clinical nets were revealed by DCA.ConclusionsWe conducted a satisfactory nomogram model to evaluate the risk of NSLN metastasis in early-stage breast cancer patients with 1 or 2 SLN metastases. This model could be considered as an ancillary tool to help such patients to be selectively exempted from ALND.

Abstract Emissive organic semiconductors are highly demanding for organic light‐emitting transistors (OLETs) and electrically pumped organic lasers (EPOLs). However, it remains a great challenge to obtain organic semiconductors with high carrier mobility and high photoluminescence quantum yield simultaneously. Here, a new design strategy is reported for highly emissive ambipolar and even n‐type semiconductors by introducing perfluorophenyl groups into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as perylene and anthracene. The results reveal that 3,9‐diperfluorophenyl perylene (5FDPP) exhibits the ambipolar semiconducting property with hole and electron mobilities up to 0.12 and 1.89 cm2 V−1 s−1, and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 55%. One of the crystal forms of 5FDPA exhibits blue emission with an emission quantum yield of 52% and simultaneously shows the n‐type semiconducting property with an electron mobility up to 2.65 cm2 V−1 s−1, which is the highest value among the reported organic emissive n‐type semiconductors. Furthermore, crystals of 5FDPP are utilized to fabricate OLETs by using Ag as source–drain electrodes. The electroluminescence is detected in the transporting channels with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 2.2%, and the current density is up to 145 kA cm−2, which are among the highest values for single‐component OLETs with symmetric electrodes.

Though charge transport in molecular devices depend on the electrode-molecule interface, controlling the interface’s contact geometry remains a challenge. Here, the authors report molecular junctions featuring TTF-fused NDI molecules anchored to gold electrodes through direct TTF-Au contacts.

In order to simulate the target echo laser signal, we designed a novel laser target simulator with high precision and high attenuation rate used for sensitivity test, function test or tracking mode test of laser receiving equipment, such as Lidar and Laser Range Finder. Regarding the laser receiving equipment on the motion platform, the model of target echo power was established based on the characteristics of laser atmospheric transmissions in the application environment. The simulation shows the model is consistent with the test data. Additionally, the MEMS ESVOA (Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems Electro-Static Variable Optical Attenuator) device was used in the overall solution of the laser target simulator to realize the target echo signal simulation with miniaturization, high attenuation rate and high precision. Finally, a laser target simulator test system was built and its high rate of attenuation, high precision and stability of laser power tested. The test results show that the change rate of target echo signal energy is more than 7 × 104 dB/s, the power simulation accuracy is better than 0.1 dB and the laser pulse power stability is better than 0.61%.

Abstract The soft nature has endowed conjugated polymers with promising applications in a wide range of field‐effect transistor (FET) based flexible electronics. With unremitting efforts on revealing the molecular structure–property relationships, numerous novel conjugated polymers with high mobility and excellent mechanical property have been developed in the past decades. Incorporating hydrogen‐bonding (H‐bonding) units into semiconducting polymers is one of the most successful strategies for designing high‐performance semiconducting materials. In this review, we aim to highlight the roles of H‐bonding units in the performances of polymeric FETs from three aspects. These include (i) charge mobility enhancement for semiconducting polymers after incorporation of H‐bonding units into the side chains, (ii) the effects of H‐bonding units on the stretchability of conjugated polymers, and (iii) the improvement of self‐healing properties of conjugated polymers containing dynamic hydrogen bonds due to the H‐bonding units in the side chains or conjugated backbones.

Abstract Herein, single‐molecule conductance studies of TBT1‐TBT6 which entails 1,4‐dithienylbenzene as the backbone and SMe groups as the anchoring units, with the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM‐BJ) technique, are reported. The molecular conductance of TBT1 with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions is enhanced by about one order of magnitude in comparison to their analogue TBT2 (which contains alkyl instead of alkoxy chains). By replacing the methoxy groups in TBT1 with extending alkoxy chains in TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5, the molecular backbones become twisted and as a consequence the single‐molecule conductance decreases gradually, showing that the intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interaction is influenced by the structural features of alkoxy chains. More importantly, the single‐molecule conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be boosted by increasing the electric field applied to the molecular junctions. Remarkably, the conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be reversibly modulated due to the conformational changes between twisted and planar ones by varying the electric field. These results demonstrate that molecules with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions have the potential for in situ control of the electrical properties of molecular‐scale devices.

Abstract Molecular systems that can function as photoresists are essential for the fabrication of flexible electronics through all‐photolithographic processes. Most of the reported molecular systems for photo‐patterning of polymeric semiconductors contain binary or multi‐components. In comparison, single component semiconducting photoresist is advantageous since it will circumvent the optimization of phase separation and ensure the patterned semiconducting thin films to be more uniform. In this paper, a single component semiconducting photoresist (PDPP4T‐N3) by incorporating azide groups into the branching alkyl chains of a diketopyrrolopyrrole‐based conjugated polymer is reported. The results reveal that i) the azide groups make the side chains to be photo‐cross‐linkable; ii) uniform patterns with size as small as 5 µm form under mild UV irradiation (365 nm, 85 mW cm−2) at ambient conditions; iii) such photo‐induced cross‐linking does not affect the inter‐chain packing; iv) benefiting from the single component feature, field‐effect transistors (FETs) with the individual patterned thin films display satisfactorily uniform performances with average charge mobility of 0.61 ± 0.10 cm2 V–1 s–1 and threshold voltage of 3.49 ± 1.43 V. These results offer a simple yet effective design strategy for high‐performance single component semiconducting photoresists, which hold great potentials for flexible electronics processed by all‐photolithography.

Abstract Development of pure organic molecular materials with room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their applications for white emitters have received significant attentions recently. Herein, a D–π–A molecule (DMACPPY) which can realize white emitting under ambient conditions both in the crystal state and the doped‐film state by combining RTP with two fluorescent emissions is reported. The white emission from the crystalline sample of DMACPPY consists fluorescence from S2 (the second excited singlet state) and S1 (the first excited singlet state) along with RTP from T1 (the first excited triplet state), namely, SST‐type white light. While, the white emission from the poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) film doped with DMACPPY contains fluorescences from S2 and S1, and RTP from T2 (the second excited triplet state) rather than T1 (STS type). DMACPPY cannot exhibit white spectrum within alternative crystalline state since inferior RTP intensity despite similar ternary emissions. The results demonstrate that the emissive properties for excited states of DMACPPY can be tuned by changing the aggregate state from crystalline to dispersion state in PMMA film. This new RTP emitter fulfills the talent for white emitting and achieves dual‐mode white emissions, invisibly, expands the application range for pure organic and heavy atom‐free RTP materials.

Multimodal image fusion aims to retain valid information from different modalities, remove redundant information to highlight critical targets, and maintain rich texture details in the fused image. However, current image fusion networks only use simple convolutional layers to extract features, ignoring global dependencies and channel contexts. This paper proposes GRPAFusion, a multimodal image fusion framework based on gradient residual and pyramid attention. The framework uses multiscale gradient residual blocks to extract multiscale structural features and multigranularity detail features from the source image. The depth features from different modalities were adaptively corrected for inter-channel responses using a pyramid split attention module to generate high-quality fused images. Experimental results on public datasets indicated that GRPAFusion outperforms the current fusion methods in subjective and objective evaluations.

Background/Aims: Pim-1 is a serine/threonine kinase that is highly expressed in the heart, and exerts potent cardiac protective effects through enhancing survival, proliferation, and regeneration of cardiomyocytes. Its myocardial specific substrates, however, remain unknown. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether Pim-1 modulates myofilament activity through phosphorylation of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a key component in regulating myofilament function in the heart. Methods: Coimmunoprecipitation and immunofluorescent assays were employed to investigate the interaction of Pim-1 with cTnI in cardiomyocytes. Biochemical, site directed mutagenesis, and mass spectrometric analyses were utilized to identify the phosphorylation sites of Pim1 in cTnI. Myofilament functional assay using skinned cardiac fiber was used to assess the effect of Pim1-mediated phosphorylation on cardiac myofilament activity. Lastly, the functional significance of Pim1-mediated cTnI in heart disease was determined in diabetic mice. Results: We found that Pim-1 specifically interacts with cTnI in cardiomyocytes and this interaction leads to Pim1-mediated cTnI phosphorylation, predominantly at Ser23/24 and Ser150. Furthermore, our functional assay demonstrated that Pim-1 induces a robust phosphorylation of cTnI within the troponin complex, thus leading to a decreased Ca2+ sensitivity. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a peptide growth factor that has been shown to stimulate myocardial contractility, markedly induces cTnI phosphorylation at Ser23/24 and Ser150 through increasing Pim-1 expression in cardiomyocytes. In a high-fat diabetic mice model, the expression of Pim1 in the heart is significantly decreased, which is accompanied by a decreased phosphorylation of cTnI at Ser23/24 and Ser150, further implicating the pathological significance of the Pim1/cTnI axis in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that Pim-1 is a novel kinase that phosphorylates cTnI primarily at Ser23/24 and Ser150 in cardiomyocytes, which in turn may modulate myofilament function under a variety of physiological and pathophysiological conditions.

Background and objective It is well-known that angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) plays an important role in the formation of the blood vascular system. Angiopoietin is involved in many diseases about angiogenesis such as tumor, so may have great prospects for the treatment of these diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of inhibiting Ang-2 via adeno-associated virus induced RNA interference (RNAi) on the biological characteristics of bronchogenic adenocarcinoma. Methods AAV-Ang-2shRNA driven by H1 promoter was constructed to transfect A549 cell line. Normal and AAV-Null cell line were utilized in the control groups. The influence of RNAi on Ang-2 expression as well as the growth rate, tumorigenic efficiency, proliferation rate, apoptosis, and microvessel density of A549 cell line were analyzed. 4,5-Dimethylthio-4'-[2-(9-anthryloxy)tetrathiafulvalene is designed and synthesized as a highly selective and sensitive chemiluminescence probe for singlet oxygen. The result suggests that the synthesized trap 2 exhibits both high selectivity for and high sensitivity to singlet oxygen, which makes it possible to be used widely for singlet oxygen detection in many chemical and biological systems and even in light water environments.

A novel kind of theoretical 'monomolecular' half-adder based on multistate/multifunctional photochromic spiropyrans is demonstrated. The properties of the resulting transformations of the spiropyran molecule are also examined.

The synthesis and characterization of two new boron-based conjugated compounds containing one and three monopyrrolo-annelated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units. The absorption spectral and electrochemical responsiveness of these compounds toward fluoride ion is because of the binding of the boron units with fluoride ion.

The new organic gelator LMWG, featuring electroactive tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and photoresponsive azobenzene groups, is designed and analyzed for developing multistimuli responsive organogels. The studies have shown that the photoisomerization of the azobenzene groups in LMWG has triggered the gel-sol transition and hence organogels with LMWG has responded not only to thermal stimuli but also to redox reactions and light irradiation.

Electron transfer has occurred from the TTF units to the substituted quinone unit in a new TTF-quinone-TTF triad containing the N,N-dialkylaniline-substituted quinone unit flanked by two TTF units, in the presence of metal ions ([Pb.sup.2+], [Zn.sup.2+], and [Sc.sup.3+]). The metal ion-promoted electron transfer and the intramolecular charge transfer are tuned by alternating ultraviolet and visible light irradiation in the presence of spiropyran.

The synthesis and characterization of four new substituted TTF-quinone dyads in the presence of metal ions is reported. The study report on the influence of the electron-accepting abilities of quinone units on the metal ion-promoted electron-transfer process is also presented.

The successful formation of a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) graphitic nanotube with isothiouronium ion surface pendants is reported which can be functionalized without disruption by oxoanion guests via a specific hydrogen-bonding interaction. It is shown that the incorporation of an isothiouronium ion end group into one of the triethylene glycol chains of the amphiphilic HBC did not hamper its nanotubular self-assembly.

Organic semiconductors have received increasing attentions in recent years because of their promising applications in various optoelectronic devices. The key performance metric for organic semiconductors is charge carrier mobility, which is governed by the electronic structures of conjugated backbones and intermolecular/interchain p-p interactions and packing in both microscopic and macroscopic levels. For this reason, more efforts have been paid to the design and synthesis of conjugated frameworks for organic semiconductors with high charge mobilities. However, recent studies manifest that appropriate modifications of side chains that are linked to conjugated frameworks can improve the intermolecular/interchain packing order and boost charge mobilities. In this Account, we discuss our research results in context of modification of side chains in organic semiconductors for charge mobility enhancement. These include the following: (i) The lengths of alkyl chains in sulfur-rich thiepin-fused heteroacences can dramatically influence the intermolecular arrangements and orbital overlaps, ushering in different hole mobilities. Inversely, the lamellar stacking modes of alkyl chains in naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units are affected by the structures of conjugated cores. (ii) The steric hindrances owing to the bulky branching chains can be weakened by partial replacement of the branching alkyl chains with linear ones for diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D (donor)-A (acceptor) conjugated polymers. Such modification of side chains makes the polymer backbones more planar and thus interchain packing order and charge mobilities are improved. The incorporation of hydrophilic tri(ethylene glycol) (TEG) chains into the polymers also leads to improved interchain packing order. In particular, the polymer in which TEG side chains are distributed uniformly exhibits relatively high charge mobility without thermal annealing. (iii) The incorporation of urea groups in the side chains induces the polymer chains to pack more orderly and form large domains because of the additional H-bonding among urea groups. Accordingly, thin film mobilities of the conjugated D-A polymers with side chains entailing urea groups are largely boosted in comparison with those of polymers of the same backbones with either branching alkyl chains or branching/linear alkyl chains. (iv) The torsions of branching alkyl chains in conjugated D-A polymers can be inhibited to some extent upon incorporation of tiny amount of NMe4I in the thin film. As a result, the polymer thin films with NMe4I exhibit improved crystallinity, and charge mobilities can be boosted by more than 20 times. (v) Side chains with functional groups in the conjugated polymers can endow the thin film field-effect transistors (FETs) with sensing functionality. FETs with the conjugated polymer with -COOH groups in the side chains show sensitive, selective, and fast responses toward ammonia and amines, while FETs with the ultrathin films of the polymer containing tetra(ethylene glycol) (TEEG) in the side chains can sense alcohol vapors (in particular ethanol vapor) sensitively and selectively with fast response. In this Feature Article, we have summarized the recent advances in the fluorescence modulation of tetraphenylethylene and silole fluorophores by manipulating the respective aggregation/deaggregation with amphiphiles. These include (i) the assembly of neutral tetraphenylethylene analogues with the aid of an ionic amphiphile, (ii) the aggregation of ionic tetraphenylethylene and silole induced by amphiphiles, and (iii) bio/chemosensors based on the aggregation/deaggregation of AIE fluorophores tuned by ionic amphiphiles. Molecularly imprinted photonic polymers can serve as ideal sensing elements for efficiently creating cross-reactive sensor arrays. Based on this concept, a new method for sensitive and label-free detection of challenging PBDEs was developed, by which the direct detection and discrimination of trace levels of PBDEs against a high-background of interferents was achieved with 100% accuracy. Two conjugated molecules with a [2,2]paracyclophane core were designed as non-fullerene electron acceptors for photovoltaic cells. Using P3HT as the donor, a high power conversion efficiency (2.69%) is achieved for the blending thin film of 1b with P3HT, which is relatively high for solution-processed OPVs based on small molecular non-fullerene acceptors and P3HT as the electron donor. In this paper, a new synthetic way to modify naphthalene diimide (NDI) at "shoulder" positions is reported. The key step of the transformation is the intramolecular cyclization involving ethynyl and imidecarbonyl groups. The structure of the intermediate pyrylium cation was confirmed by X-ray crystal structural analysis. New conjugated molecules 1a-g were successfully synthesized in acceptable yields. Their absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured. Among them 1c-f are strongly emissive in solutions. Furthermore, 1b-f are also fluorescent in their solid states; in particular, 1b exhibits a typical aggregation-induced enhanced emission feature. Yellow-emissive microfibrils of 1d show potential optical waveguide behavior. HOMO/LUMO energies of 1a-f were determined based on their cyclic voltammograms. The results also reveal that HOMO/LUMO energies of these new conjugated molecules are influenced by the two flanking moieties. Notably, the thin film of 1c that is emissive shows p-type semiconducting behavior with hole mobility up to 0.0063 cm² V-1 s-1 based on the transfer and output characteristics of the OFET (organic field effect transistor). Three linear and one cyclic tetrathiafulvalene-1,4,5,8-naphtha!e-nediimide (TTF--NDI) compounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 were synthesized and studied in the presence of metal ions. Both absorption and electron spin resonance spectroscopic studies clearly indicate that electron transfer occurs from TTF to the NDI unit in the presence of metal ions (Pb2+ and Sc3+) for linear compounds 1 and 2. The mechanism based on the metal ion coordination is proposed for the electron transfer within 1 and 2 after the addition of metal ions. Compound 3 exhibits intramolecular charge-transfer absorption because of the cyclophane framework. A facile and convenient fluorescence detection of gamma-ray radiation is reported. This is based on the ensemble of silole 1and polymer 2, by taking advantages of AIE (aggregation-induced emission) behavior of silole compounds and the fact that polymers with –SO2groups in the main chain can be degraded upon gamma-ray radiation. The fluorescence intensity of the ensemble of silole 1and polymer 2decreases gradually after exposure to increasing dose of gamma-ray radiation. The detection of gamma-ray radiation with silole 1and polymer 2can be performed at ambient conditions and gamma-ray radiation as low as 0.13 kGy dose can be successfully detected. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) with negative charges aggregate in the presence of Arg6due to electrostatic interactions resulting in the red-shift of the plasmon absorption. But, after incubation of Arg6with trypsin the aggregation of Au-NPs can be prohibited. Accordingly, a newly designed-Au-NPs based colorimetric assay method for trypsin activity is established. Trypsin with a concentration as low as 1.6 ng mL−1can be assayed with this new colorimetric assay. This colorimetric label-free assay for trypsin can be performed in aqueous solution and both Au-NPs and Arg6are easily accessible. As essential enzymes in the body, monoamine oxidases (MAOs), including MAO-B, help maintain the proper balance of neurotransmitters and other dietary and biogenic amines. Thus, development of convenient and continuous assays for MAO-B and its inhibitor-screening is highly desirable since the inhibitors have implications for therapeutics for many brain diseases. In this paper, we report a direct continuous fluorescence turn-on assay for MAO-B and its inhibitor-screening with the ensemble of silole 1, heptylamine and HSO3−, which are either easily accessible or commercially available. Fluorescent spectral investigations show that this fluorometric assay can be performed continuously in aqueous solution and MAO-B of concentrations as low as 0.25 μg/mL can be analyzed. Despite a large steric bulk of C60, a molecular graphene with a covalently linked C60 pendant [hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-C60; 1] self-assembles into a coaxial nanotube whose wall consists of a graphite-like π-stacked HBC array, whereas the nanotube surface is fully covered by a molecular layer of clustering C60. Because of this explicit coaxial configuration, the nanotube exhibits an ambipolar character in the field-effect transistor output [hole mobility (μh) = 9.7 × 10-7 cm² V-1 s-1; electron mobility (μe) = 1.1 × 10-5 cm² V-1 s-1) and displays a photovoltaic response upon light illumination. Successful coassembly of 1 and an HBC derivative without C60 (2) allows for tailoring the p/n heterojunction in the nanotube, so that its ambipolar carrier transport property can be optimized for enhancing the open-circuit voltage in the photovoltaic output. As evaluated by an electrodeless method called flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity technique, the intratubular hole mobility (2.0 cm² V-1 s-1) of a coassembled nanotube containing 10 mol % of HBC-C60 (1) is as large as the intersheet mobility in graphite. The homotropic nanotube of 2 blended with a soluble C60 derivative [(6,6)-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester] displayed a photovoltaic response with a much different composition dependency, where the largest open-circuit voltage attained was obviously lower than that realized by the coassembly of 1 and 2.
