1. Sleep Problems and Circadian Rhythm Functioning in Autistic Children, Autism with Co-Occurring Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Typically Developing Children: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Sleep problems are prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and have a range of causes, including circadian rhythm misalignment. However, little is known about sleep in autistic children with co-occurring attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A cross-sectional descriptive and analytic study was conducted in 87 autistic children and adolescents (10.22 ± 3.36), 27 of whom had a diagnosis of ADHD, and 30 children with typical development (9.07 ± 2.75). An ambulatory circadian monitoring device was used to record wrist temperature (WT), motor activity, sleep, and light intensity. Higher WT values were detected in the comparison group, followed by autistic children and, ultimately, participants with co-occurring ADHD. In addition, atypical daily WT patterns were observed in autistic children, with slope flattening during afternoon and evening hours and an absent or subtle postprandial peak. Participants with co-occurring ADHD showed greater motor activity during sleep. Our findings, especially concerning WT rhythm, appear to support previous findings on the etiology of sleep problems in autism, as WT is closely connected to sleep-wakefulness. We found specific sleep patterns in autistic children depending on the presence of co-occurring ADHD, particularly regarding sleep maintenance, which may be an area of future research.

2. Electronic Structure and Kohn-Luttinger Superconductivity of Heavily-Doped Single-Layer Graphene

Abstract

The existence of superconductivity (SC) in graphene appears to be established in both twisted and non-twisted multilayers. However, whether their building block, single-layer graphene (SLG), can also host SC remains an open question. Earlier theoretical works predicted that SLG could become a chiral d-wave superconductor driven by electronic interactions when doped to its van Hove singularity, but questions such as whether the d-wave SC survives the strong band renormalizations seen in experiments, its robustness against the source of doping, or if it will occur at any reasonable critical temperature (Tc) have remained difficult to answer, in part due to uncertainties in model parameters. In this study, we adopt a random-phase approximation framework based on a Kohn-Luttinger-like mechanism to investigate SC in heavily-doped SLG. We predict that robust d+id topological SC could arise in SLG doped by Tb, with a Tc up to 600 mK. We also investigate the possibility of realizing d-wave SC by employing other dopants, such as Li or Cs. The structural models have been derived from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on Tb-doped graphene and first-principles calculations for Cs and Li doping. We find that dopants that change the lattice symmetry of SLG are detrimental to the d-wave state. The stability of the d-wave SC predicted here in Tb-doped SLG could provide a valuable insight for guiding future experimental efforts aimed at exploring topological superconductivity in monolayer graphene., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

New generation networks, based on Cognitive Radio technology, allow dynamic allocation of the spectrum, alleviating spectrum scarcity. These networks also have a resilient potential for dynamic operation for energy saving. In this paper, we present a novel wireless network optimization algorithm for cognitive radio networks based on a cloud sharing-decision mechanism. Three Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were optimized: spectrum usage, power consumption, and exposure of human beings. For a realistic suburban scenario in Ghent city, Belgium, we determine the optimality among the KPIs. Compared to a traditional Cognitive Radio network design, our optimization algorithm for the cloud-based architecture reduced the network power consumption by 27.5%, the average global exposure by 34.3%, and spectrum usage by 34.5% at the same time. Even for the worst optimization case, our solution performs better than the traditional architecture by 4.8% in terms of network power consumption, 7.3% in terms of spectrum usage and 4.3% in terms of global exposure.

16. Effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom in the Teaching of Mathematics in an Online Environment: Identification of Factors Affecting the Learning Process

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to carry out an analysis of the effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom methodology for teaching mathematics--specifically geometry, in an online environment. Specifically, we measured: (1) the academic achievement of students who were taught based on this method; and (2) the perceptions of satisfaction with this methodology and with the virtual sessions attended through digital resources. In order to gather the data a pre-experimental and ex-post-facto design was used with a sample of 113 secondary education students. Regarding academic performance, positive and significant differences were found between the pre-test and the post-test. In addition, different significant variables were found that affected the academic performance of the students, such as having previously failed the subject of mathematics, the perception of the students about their effort in learning mathematics or the educational level of the parents. In respect of the students' perceptions, the results showed that they were generally happy with the use of the Flipped Classroom methodology, bearing in mind that the environmental context in which the educational process takes place affects the students' perceptions. However, slightly negative perceptions were also found in respect of virtual sessions that made use of digital resources. These findings were significantly affected by the frequency with which resources and electronic devices were deployed. These results would support the integration of this methodology into the teaching of mathematics, where the use of digital resources to study geometry in particular helps to improve the different competences and skills of the students.

Abstract

The high-pressure crystal structure evolution of CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) perovskite has been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the crystal structure of MAPbBr3 undergoes two phase transitions following the space-group sequence: Pm-3m-to-Im3-to-Pmn21. The transitions take place at around 0.8 and 1.8 GPa, respectively. This result is contradicting the previously reported phase transition sequence: Pm-3m-to-Im3-to-Pnma. In this work the crystal structures of each of the three phases are determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis which is later supported by Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction patterns. The pressure dependence of the crystal lattice parameters and unit-cell volumes are determined from the two aforementioned techniques, as well as the bulk moduli for each phase. The bandgap behaviour of MAPbBr3 has been studied up to around 4 GPa, by the means of single-crystal optical-absorption experiments. The evolution of the bandgap has been well explained using the pressure dependence of the Pb-Br bond distance and Pb-Br-Pb angles as determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments., Comment: 20 pages, 5 pages

34. The Contribution of Information Gap Activities to Support Honduran Ninth-Grade Students' Speaking Fluency: Action Research

Abstract

This article presents the process and results of an action research project which explored the contribution of information gap activities to support a group Honduran ninth-graders' speaking fluency. Their speaking fluency was assessed in terms of speech rate, breakdowns or pauses, and repairs. This study adopted a mixed method approach: quantitative and qualitative. The sample chosen was a purposive sample made up of a group of seven ninth graders who had been learning English in rural context in a public high school in Comayagua for two years, all aged between 14 and 15 years old, with a basic level of English. The information gap technique was implemented during seven sessions following the regular topics scheduled for the school term. Data were collected by applying a pre-test and a post-test to assess students' fluency, and results were assessed with an analytic rubric; and their perceptions were assessed by a focus group. The pre and post-test results showed an improvement in participants' speaking fluency, and these results were in agreement with their positive perceptions. Moreover, participants expressed that information gap activities had impacted positively their motivation and their awareness of mistakes. In conclusion, information gap activities helped learners improve their speaking fluency and might support English teachers in Honduran rural public contexts not to rely upon traditional textbook use and make their classes more motivating and communicative.

35. Sleep Problems, Circadian Rhythms, and Their Relation to Behavioral Difficulties in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

This was an exploratory cross-sectional study comparing 45 children with ASD to 24 typically developing drug-naïve controls, group-matched on age, sex, and body mass index. Objective data was obtained using the following: an ambulatory circadian monitoring device; saliva samples to determine dim light melatonin onset (DLMO): and three parent-completed measures: the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL); the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R); and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ28). The CBCL and RBS-R scales showed the highest scores amongst poor sleepers with ASD. Sleep fragmentation was associated with somatic complaints and self-injury, leading to a higher impact on family life. Sleep onset difficulties were associated with withdrawal, anxiety, and depression. Those with phase advanced DLMO had lower scores for "somatic complaints"; "anxious/depressed" state; and "social problems", suggesting that this phenomenon has a protective role.

Abstract

The supernova remnant (SNR) G288.8-6.3 was recently discovered as a faint radio shell at large Galactic latitude using observations with ASKAP in the EMU survey. Here, we make the first detailed investigation of the $\gamma$-ray emission from the G288.8-6.3 region, aiming to characterise the high-energy emission in the GeV regime from the newly discovered SNR, dubbed Ancora. 15 years of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data were analysed at energies between 400 MeV and 1 TeV and the excess seen in the region was modelled using different spatial and spectral models. We detect spatially extended $\gamma$-ray emission coinciding with the radio SNR, with detection significance up to 8.8 $\sigma$. A radial disk spatial model in combination with a power-law spectral model with an energy flux of $(4.80 \pm 0.91) \times 10^{-6}$ $\text{MeV}$ $\text{cm}^{-2}$ $\text{s}^{-1}$, with the spectrum extending up to around 5 GeV was found to be the preferred model. Morphologically, hotspots seen above 1 GeV are well-correlated with the bright western part of the radio shell. The emission is more likely to be of leptonic origin given the estimated gas density in the region and the estimated distance and age of the SNR, but a hadronic scenario cannot be ruled out. Ancora is the eighth SNR detected at high Galactic latitude with Fermi-LAT. This new population of remnants has the potential to constrain the physics of particle diffusion and escape from SNRs into the Galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. In this paper, we present a new computational framework to approximate a Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes model with variable density and degenerate mobility that preserves the mass of the mixture, the pointwise bounds of the density and the decreasing energy. This numerical scheme is based on a finite element approximation for the Navier-Stokes fluid flow with discontinuous pressure and an upwind discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard part.
