Prenatal exposure to maternal depression increases the risk for onset of emotional and behavioral disorders in children. Here, we investigated the effects of exposure to prenatal depression on white matter microstructural integrity at birth and at 2–3 years, and associated neurodevelopment. Diffusion-weighted images were acquired for children of the Drakenstein Child Health Study at 2–4 weeks postpartum (n = 70, 47% boys) and at 2–3 years of age (n = 60, 58% boys). Tract-Based Spatial Statistics was used to compare diffusion tensor metrics across groups defined by presence (> 19 on Beck’s Depression Inventory and/or > 12 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) or absence (below depression thresholds) of depression, and associations with neurodevelopmental measures at age 2–3 years were determined. We did not detect group differences in white matter integrity at neonatal age in this cohort, but at 2–3 years, children in the exposed group demonstrated higher fractional anisotropy, and lower mean and radial diffusivity in association tracts compared to control children. Neuroimaging studies have emphasized the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on brain development, traditionally in heavily exposed participants. However, less is known about how naturally occurring community patterns of PAE (including light to moderate exposure) affect brain development, particularly in consideration of commonly occurring concurrent impacts of prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE).Three hundred thirty-two children (ages 8 to 12) living in South Africa's Cape Flats townships underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging. During pregnancy, their mothers reported alcohol and tobacco use, which was used to evaluate PAE and PTE effects on their children's brain structure. Analyses involved the main effects of PAE and PTE (and their interaction) and the effects of PAE and PTE quantity on cortical thickness, surface area, and volume.After false-discovery rate (FDR) correction, PAE was associated with thinner left parahippocampal cortices, while PTE was associated with smaller cortical surface area in the bilateral pericalcarine, left lateral orbitofrontal, right posterior cingulate, right rostral anterior cingulate, left caudal middle frontal, and right caudal anterior cingulate gyri. There were no PAE × PTE interactions nor any associations of PAE and PTE exposure on volumetrics that survived FDR correction.PAE was associated with reduction in the structure of the medial temporal lobe, a brain region critical for learning and memory. PTE had stronger and broader associations, including with regions associated with executive function, reward processing, and emotional regulation, potentially reflecting continued postnatal exposure to tobacco (i.e., second-hand smoke exposure). These differential effects are discussed with respect to reduced PAE quantity in our exposed group versus prior studies within this geographical location, the deep poverty in which participants live, and the consequences of apartheid and racially and economically driven payment practices that contributed to heavy drinking in the region. Longer-term follow-up is needed to determine potential environmental and other moderators of the brain findings here and assess the extent to which they endure over time.

It is now well recognized that South Asians living in the US (SAUS) have a higher prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) that begins earlier and is more aggressive than age-matched people of other ethnicities. SA ancestry is now recognized as a risk enhancer in the US cholesterol treatment guidelines. The pathophysiology of this is not fully understood but may relate to insulin resistance, genetic and dietary factors, lack of physical exercise, visceral adiposity and other, yet undiscovered biologic mechanisms. In this expert consensus document, we review the epidemiology of ASCVD in this population, enumerate the challenges faced in tackling this problem, provide strategies for early screening and education of the community and their healthcare providers, and offer practical prevention strategies and culturally-tailored dietary advice to lower the rates of ASCVD in this cohort.

The single crystals of pure and L-serine-doped ammonium pentaborate (NH4B5O8·4H2O) (APB) are grown using the low-temperature solution growth technique. The grown crystals are 0.8–1 cm in size. The grown crystals have a retained orthorhombic structure symmetry. Spectroscopic study shows the presence of various functional groups such as N–H vibration, B–O asymmetric stretching, O–B–O ring asymmetric, C=O stretching of COOH and C–O stretching. The elemental analysis confirmed the presence of various elements. The linear optical study shows the enhancement in various optical properties such as optical transmittance, energy band gap, skin depth, etc. for APB crystal on account of L-serine doping. The a.c. electrical conductivity of APB crystal is reduced on doping the L-serine in it. The SHG efficiency of L-serine-doped APB crystals is found to be 1.10 times higher than pure APB crystal.

Potassium dihydrogen citrate (KDC) is well-recognized food additive and mineral found in various fruits which make it interesting to study its properties under the influence of toxic metal doping. Pure and different mol% Ni2+-doped KDC crystals were grown using slow-solvent evaporation technique at room temperature. The grown crystals exhibits needle-shaped morphology. EDAX analysis reveals apparent concentration of Ni2+ in different mol% Ni2+-doped KDC. Indexing of powder XRD patterns of pure and different mol% Ni2+-doped KDC reveals triclinic symmetry of grown crystals. W–H analysis reveals presence of lattice strain under the incorporation of Ni2+ doping in the host lattice of KDC. Bond assignments corresponding to various functional groups present in grown crystals is studied using the FT-IR spectroscopic study. The modification in thermal stability of KDC due to Ni2+ doping is studied using TGA analysis. The SEM study has shown grain growth in KDC crystal due to Ni2+ doping. The presence of grain, grain boundary effect and relaxation mechanism involved in transport properties of pure and different mol% Ni2+ doped KDC is reported using the Impedance–Modulus spectroscopic studies. Dielectric studies reveal modification in dielectric constant, dielectric loss and a.c. conductivity of KDC due to Ni2+ doping. The structural defect mechanism is well studied using the photoluminescence.

A first-principle computational method has been used to investigate the effects of Ru dopants on the electronic and optical absorption properties of marcasite FeS2. In addition, we have also revealed a new marcasite phase in RuS2, unlike most studied pyrite structures. The new phase has fulfilled all the necessary criteria of structural stability and its practical existence. The transition pressure of 8 GPa drives the structural change from pyrite to orthorhombic phase in RuS2. From the thermodynamical calculation, we have reported the stability of new-phase under various ranges of applied pressure and temperature. Further, from the results of phonon dispersion calculated at Zero Point Energy, pyrite structure exhibits ground state stability and the marcasite phase has all modes of frequencies positive. The newly proposed phase is a semiconductor with a band gap comparable to its pyrite counterpart but vary in optical absorption by around 106 cm−1. The various Ru doped structures have also shown similar optical absorption spectra in the same order of magnitude. We have used crystal field theory to explain high optical absorption which is due to the involvement of different electronic states in formation of electronic and optical band gaps. Lӧwdin charge analysis is used over the customarily Mulliken charges to predict 89% of covalence in the compound. Our results indicate the importance of new phase to enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic materials for practical applications.

BackgroundKetamine is a rapidly-acting antidepressant treatment with robust response rates. Previous studies have reported that serial ketamine therapy modulates resting state functional connectivity in several large-scale networks, though it remains unknown whether variations in brain structure, function, and connectivity impact subsequent treatment success. We used a data-driven approach to determine whether pretreatment multimodal neuroimaging measures predict changes along symptom dimensions of depression following serial ketamine infusion.MethodsPatients with depression (n = 60) received structural, resting state functional, and diffusion MRI scans before treatment. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17), the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-C), and the Rumination Response Scale (RRS) before and 24 h after patients received four (0.5 mg/kg) infusions of racemic ketamine over 2 weeks. Nineteen unaffected controls were assessed at similar timepoints. Random forest regression models predicted symptom changes using pretreatment multimodal neuroimaging and demographic measures.ResultsTwo HDRS-17 subscales, the HDRS-6 and core mood and anhedonia (CMA) symptoms, and the RRS: reflection (RRSR) scale were predicted significantly with 19, 27, and 1% variance explained, respectively. Increased right medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate and posterior insula (PoI) and lower kurtosis of the superior longitudinal fasciculus predicted reduced HDRS-6 and CMA symptoms following treatment. RRSR change was predicted by global connectivity of the left posterior cingulate, left insula, and right superior parietal lobule.ConclusionsOur findings support that connectivity of the anterior default mode network and PoI may serve as potential biomarkers of antidepressant outcomes for core depressive symptoms.

Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate, ADP, (NH4H2PO4) crystal has a wide range of applications in integrated and nonlinear optics. The amino acid-like l-glutamic acid (C5H9O4N) causes the defect in the framework of ADP crystal. The 0.6wt% l-glutamic acid doped ADP crystal is grown using the slow evaporation technique. The grown crystal is subjected under the shockwave of Mach number 1.7 and shock number 2, 4 and 6. The Powder XRD study shows the lattice strain introduced in the structure of grown crystals due to impose of the shockwave. The Photoluminescence confirmed the presence of D-defect and Self Trapped Excitons. The influence of shockwave on dielectric, impedance and modulus properties of glutamic acid doped ADP crystal is well studied in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 10 MHz and the temperature range of 323 K to 373 K. The shockwave is reduced the dielectric constant, A.C. Conductivity, strength of polarizibility and the grain capacitance. The Correlation Barrier Hopping (CBH) conduction mechanism is well studied for pristine and shocked glutamic acid doped ADP crystals over the temperature range considered. The presence of grain over the frequency range considered is identified and confirmed using the complex impedance and the complex modulus spectroscopy. The pristine and shocked glutamic acid doped ADP crystals have possessed the temperature-independent, Non-Debye type relaxation process. The results are discussed here.

The term ‘collective’ is used to refer to a group of animals such as a flock of birds or a herd of elephants. Aggregate motions of such collectives often give rise to visually pleasing shapes and patterns (e.g. V-shape formation of geese while they migrate from one place to another). While shapes of moving collectives are of great interest in many scientific studies, scant attention has been given to algorithmically extract and render these shapes via polygonal boundaries or graphs. In this Letter, the authors present a multi-stage, proof of concept framework for tracking geometric shapes and extracting video frames containing a user defined shape of moving collectives, by employing a deep-learning based object detection, well-known alpha shapes and a modified shape context. They demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed framework on a couple of test videos and discuss its potential applications in a wider area.

Ferrite-Ferroelectric composites with the generic formula y(Mn0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4)1 − y[Ca0.1Ba0.9Zr0.1Ti0.9] (y = 25%, 50% and 75%) are prepared by solid-state reaction. One of the prepared samples of the composites 25%Mn0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4–75%Ca0.1Ba0.9Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (MCF-CBZT) is subjected to high-energy mechanical milling for different durations (12 h, 18 h and 30 h). The compositional stoichiometry of all the samples is checked by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. All the un-milled and milled samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, magnetometry, and dielectric and magnetoelectric coefficient measurements. Magnetoelectric composite possesses biphasic surrounding to exhibit complex behavior of ME effect. The present study reveals influence of mechanical milling on MCF-CBZT magnetoelectric composite. The XRD confirms the presence of ferrite and ferroelectric phases for all the samples and microstructural changes appear in SEM images of milled specimens. FTIR spectra show four characteristic bands in 400–800 cm−1 range. Saturation magnetization and Curie temperature decrease as milling duration increases. Relaxed broad doublet with the distribution of nuclear hyperfine fields is found in Mossbauer spectra indicating good coupling between ferrite-ferroelectric phases caused by mechanical milling for the multiferroic composite. The frequency response of dielectric constant and loss tangent is recorded in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 MHz. The static value of magnetoelectric factor has been studied as a function of magnetic field for un-milled and milled MCF-CBZT samples. The maximum value 382 μV/cm·Oe of (ME)H is observed for the 18 h milled MCF-CBZT sample.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing literature that demonstrates the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on brain development in school-aged children. Less is known, however, on how PAE impacts the brain early in life. We investigated the effects of PAE and child sex on subcortical gray matter volume, cortical surface area (CSA), cortical volume (CV), and cortical thickness (CT) in children aged 2 to 3 years. METHODS: The sample was recruited as a nested cross-sectional substudy of the Drakenstein Child Health Study. Images from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were acquired on 47 alcohol-exposed and 124 control children (i.e., with no or minimal alcohol exposure), aged 2 to 3 years, some of whom were scanned as neonates. Brain images were processed through automated processing pipelines using FreeSurfer version 6.0. Subcortical and a priori selected cortical regions of interest were compared. RESULTS: Subcortical volume analyses revealed a PAE by child sex interaction for bilateral putamen volumes (Left: p = 0.02; Right: p = 0.01). There was no PAE by child sex interaction effect on CSA, CV, and CT. Analyses revealed an impact of PAE on CSA (p = 0.04) and CV (p = 0.04), but not CT in this age group. Of note, the inferior parietal gyrus CSA was significantly smaller in children with PAE compared to control children. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this subgroup scanned at age 2 to 3 years build on previously described subcortical volume differences in neonates from this cohort. Findings suggest that PAE persistently affects gray matter development through the critical early years of life. The detectable influence of PAE on brain structure at this early age further highlights the importance of brain imaging studies on the impact of PAE on the young developing brain.

Interleukin-13 receptor subunit alpha-2 (IL-13Rα2, CD213A), a high-affinity membrane receptor of the anti-inflammatory Th2 cytokine IL-13, is overexpressed in a variety of solid tumors and is correlated with poor prognosis in glioblastoma, colorectal cancer, adrenocortical carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and breast cancer. While initially hypothesized as a decoy receptor for IL-13-mediated signaling, recent evidence demonstrates IL-13 can signal through IL-13Rα2 in human cells. In addition, expression of IL-13Rα2 and IL-13Rα2-mediated signaling has been shown to promote tumor proliferation, cell survival, tumor progression, invasion, and metastasis. Given its differential expression in tumor versus normal tissue, IL-13Rα2 is an attractive immunotherapy target, as both a targetable receptor and an immunogenic antigen. Multiple promising strategies, including immunotoxins, cancer vaccines, and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, have been developed to target IL-13Rα2. In this mini-review, we discuss recent developments surrounding IL-13Rα2-targeted therapies in pre-clinical and clinical study, including potential strategies to improve IL-13Rα2-directed cancer treatment efficacy.

IntroductionExposure to maternal HIV in pregnancy may be a risk factor for impaired child neurodevelopment during the first years of life. Altered neurometabolites have been associated with HIV exposure in older children and may help explain the mechanisms underlying this risk. For the first time, we explored neurometabolic profiles of children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected (CHEU) compared to children who are HIV-unexposed (CHU) at 2-3 years of age.MethodsThe South African Drakenstein Child Health Study enrolled women during pregnancy and is following mother-child pairs through childhood. MRI scans were acquired on a sub-group of children at 2-3 years. We used single voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure brain metabolite ratios to total creatine in the parietal grey matter, and left and right parietal white matter of 83 children (36 CHEU; 47 CHU). Using factor analysis, we explored brain metabolite patterns in predefined parietal voxels in these groups using logistic regression models. Differences in relative concentrations of individual metabolites (n-acetyl-aspartate, myo-inositol, total choline, and glutamate) to total creatine between CHEU and CHU groups were also examined.ResultsFactor analysis revealed four different metabolite patterns, each one characterized by covarying ratios of a single metabolite in parietal grey and white matter. The cross-regional pattern dominated by myo-inositol, a marker for glial reactivity and inflammation, was associated with HIV exposure status (OR 1.63; 95% CI 1.11–2.50) which held after adjusting for child age, sex, and maternal alcohol use during pregnancy (OR 1.59; 95% CI 1.07 –2.47). Additionally, higher relative concentrations of myo-inositol to total creatine were found in left and right parietal white matter of CHEU compared to CHU (p=0.025 and p=0.001 respectively).DiscussionIncreased ratios of myo-inositol to total creatine in parietal brain regions at age 2-3 years in CHEU are suggestive of early and ongoing neuroinflammatory processes. Altered relative concentrations of neurometabolites were found predominantly in the white matter, which is sensitive to neuroinflammation, and may contribute to developmental risk in this population. Future work on the trajectory of myo-inositol over time in CHEU, alongside markers of neurocognitive development, and the potential for specific neurodevelopmental interventions will be useful.

ImportanceAnemia affects millions of pregnant women and their children worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Although anemia in pregnancy is a well-described risk factor for cognitive development, the association with child brain structure is poorly understood.ObjectiveTo explore the association of anemia during pregnancy and postnatal child anemia with brain structure in early life.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis neuroimaging nested cohort study was embedded within the Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS), a population-based birth cohort in South Africa. Pregnant individuals were enrolled into the DCHS between 2012 and 2015 from 2 clinics in a periurban setting. Mother-child pairs were assessed prospectively; follow-up is ongoing. A subgroup of children had brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at age 2 to 3 years from 2015 to 2018. This study focused on the 147 pairs with structural neuroimaging and available hemoglobin data. Data analyses were conducted in 2021 and 2022.ExposuresMothers had hemoglobin measurements during pregnancy, and a subgroup of children had hemoglobin measurements during early life. Anemia was classified as hemoglobin levels less than 11 g/dL based on World Health Organization guidelines; children younger than 6 months were classified using local guidelines.Main Outcomes and MeasuresChild brain volumes of global, subcortical, and corpus callosum structures were quantified using T1-weighted MRI. Linear regression models were used to analyze the associations between maternal and child anemia with child brain volumes, accounting for potential confounders.ResultsOf 147 children (mean [SD] age at MRI, 34 [2] months; 83 [56.5%] male) with high-resolution MRI scans, prevalence of maternal anemia in pregnancy was 31.3% (46 of 147; median [IQR] gestation of measurement: 13 [9-20] weeks). Maternal anemia during pregnancy was significantly associated with smaller volumes of the child caudate bilaterally (adjusted percentage difference, −5.30% [95% CI, −7.01 to −3.59]), putamen (left hemisphere: −4.33% [95% CI, −5.74 to −2.92]), and corpus callosum (−7.75% [95% CI, −11.24 to −4.26]). Furthermore, antenatal maternal hemoglobin levels were also associated with brain volumes in the caudate (left hemisphere: standardized β = 0.15 [95% CI, 0.02 to 0.28]; right hemisphere: β = 0.15 [95% CI, 0.02 to 0.27]), putamen left hemisphere (β = 0.21 [95% CI, 0.07 to 0.35]), and corpus callosum (β = 0.24 [95% CI, 0.09 to 0.39]). Prevalence of child anemia was 52.5% (42 of 80; median [IQR] age of measurement: 8.0 [2.7 to 14.8] months). Child anemia was not associated with brain volumes, nor did it mediate the association of maternal anemia during pregnancy with brain volumes.Conclusions and RelevanceIn this cohort study, anemia in pregnancy was associated with altered child brain structural development. Given the high prevalence of antenatal maternal anemia worldwide, these findings suggest that optimizing interventions during pregnancy may improve child brain outcomes.

Introduction\ud \ud Patients with cancer who develop small bowel obstruction are at high risk of malnutrition and morbidity following compromise of gastrointestinal tract continuity. This study aimed to characterise current management and outcomes following malignant small bowel obstruction.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud A prospective, multicentre cohort study of patients with small bowel obstruction who presented to UK hospitals between 16th January and 13th March 2017. Patients who presented with small bowel obstruction due to primary tumours of the intestine (excluding left-sided colonic tumours) or disseminated intra-abdominal malignancy were included. Outcomes included 30-day mortality and in-hospital complications. Cox-proportional hazards models were used to generate adjusted effects estimates, which are presented as hazard ratios (HR) alongside the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The threshold for statistical significance was set at the level of P ≤ 0.05 a-priori.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud 205 patients with malignant small bowel obstruction presented to emergency surgery services during the study period. Of these patients, 50 had obstruction due to right sided colon cancer, 143 due to disseminated intraabdominal malignancy, 10 had primary tumours of the small bowel and 2 patients had gastrointestinal stromal tumours. In total 100 out of 205 patients underwent a surgical intervention for obstruction. 30-day in-hospital mortality rate was 11.3% for those with primary tumours and 19.6% for those with disseminated malignancy. Severe risk of malnutrition was an independent predictor for poor mortality in this cohort (adjusted HR 16.18, 95% CI 1.86 to 140.84, p = 0.012). Patients with right-sided colon cancer had high rates of morbidity.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud Mortality rates were high in patients with disseminated malignancy and in those with right sided colon cancer. Further research should identify optimal management strategy to reduce morbidity for these patient groups.

We analyzed structural magnetic resonance imaging data from 58 cognitively normal and 101 mild cognitive impairment subjects. We used a general linear regression model to study the association between cognitive performance with hippocampal atrophy and ventricular enlargement using the radial distance method.Bilateral hippocampal atrophy was associated with baseline and longitudinal memory performance. Left hippocampal atrophy predicted longitudinal decline in visuospatial function. The multidomain ventricular analysis did not reveal any significant predictors.

In this study, the electronic and optical properties of the double perovskite (DP) oxides Pb2ScMO6 (M = Sb, Ta) were systematically investigated using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave model. Calculations were performed using both the generalized gradient approximation and modified Becke–Johnson potentials. The results showed that the O-atom is responsible for the maxima in the density of states (DOS) in the valence band, whereas the Sc-atom contributes to the maximum DOS in the conduction band. The dielectric constants, absorption coefficients, and reflectivity were also calculated for these systems. The results indicated the presence of wide band gaps in both of these DPs, thereby indicating their insulating semiconducting nature.

Aim: We have shown that IL-4 fused to Pseudomonas exotoxin (IL-4-PE) is cytotoxic to ovarian cancer cell lines. The antineoplastic properties of IFN-α, IFN-γ and IL-4-PE have been studied and showed some promise in the clinical trials. Here, we investigated whether the combination of IL-4-PE, IFN-α and IFN-γ will result in increased ovarian cancer cell death in vitro and in vivo. Materials & Methods: Ovarian cancer cells were tested in vitro to analyze the cytotoxic effects of IL-4-PE, IFN-α and IFN-γ, and the combination of all three. Tumor-bearing xenograft mice were treated with the combination of IL-4-PE, IFN-α and IFN-γ to monitor their overall survival. The JAK/STAT phosphorylation signaling pathways were studied to delineate the mechanism of synergistic antitumor activity. Results: The combination of IL-4-PE with IFN-α and IFN-γ resulted in increased ovarian cancer cell death in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, the synergistic antitumor effect was dependent on interferon signaling, but not IL-4-PE signaling as determined by signaling specific chemical inhibitors. The combination therapy induced the activation of critical mediators of apoptosis. Conclusion: The combination of IL-4-PE with interferons increased overall survival of mice with human ovarian cancer xenograft. These data suggest that this novel combination could provide a unique approach to treating ovarian cancer.

Background Converging evidence suggests that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces neuroplasticity in patients with severe depression, though how this relates to antidepressant response is less clear. Arterial spin-labeled functional magnetic resonance imaging tracks absolute changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) linked with brain function and offers a potentially powerful tool when observing neurofunctional plasticity with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Methods Using arterial spin-labeled functional magnetic resonance imaging, we measured global and regional CBF associated with clinically prescribed ECT and therapeutic response in patients (n = 57, 30 female) before ECT, after two treatments, after completing an ECT treatment “index” (∼4 weeks), and after long-term follow-up (6 months). Age- and sex-matched control subjects were also scanned twice (n = 36, 19 female), ∼4 weeks apart. Results Patients with lower baseline global CBF were more likely to respond to ECT. Regional CBF increased in the right anterior hippocampus in all patients irrespective of clinical outcome, both after 2 treatments and after ECT index. However, hippocampal CBF increases postindex were more pronounced in nonresponders. ECT responders exhibited CBF increases in the dorsomedial thalamus and motor cortex near the vertex ECT electrode, as well as decreased CBF within lateral frontoparietal regions. Conclusions ECT induces functional neuroplasticity in the hippocampus, which could represent functional precursors of ECT-induced increases in hippocampal volume reported previously. However, excessive functional neuroplasticity within the hippocampus may not be conducive to positive clinical outcome.
