Abstract

This article describes an integrated package of Parton Density Functions called PDFLIB which has been added to the CERN Program Library Pool W999 and is labelled as W5051. In this package all the different sets of parton density functions of the Nucleon, the Pion and the Photon which are available today have been put together. All these sets have been combined in a consistent way such that they all have similar calling sequences and no external data files have to be read in anymore. A default set has been prepared, although those preferring their own set or wanting to test a new one may do so within the package. The package also offers a program to calculate the strong coupling constant αs to first or second order. The correct ΛQCD associated to the selected set of structure functions and the number of allowed flavours with respect to the given Q2 is automatically used in the calculation. The selection of sets, the program parameters as well as the possibilities to modify the defaults and to control errors occurred during execution are described.

Abstract

The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract

A measurement of the direct production of photons with high transverse momentum from\(\bar pp\) collisions at\(\sqrt s = 630\) GeV is presented. The structure of events containing a high transverse momentum photon is studied. The results support predictions from QCD theory.

Abstract

The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN {Mathematical expression} collider ( {Mathematical expression}=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate with pT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector boson W±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study the W production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector boson Z0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS\(\bar pp\) Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, whereK2 andK3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given.
