In this work, systematic calculations are carried out for the distributions of electric currents in three super-active regions (large delta-type spot groups) NOAA 5395, 6659 and 6891. A method of computation published by us is for the first time applied to reveal the distribution of horizontal currents in active regions. The relation between currents and flare kernels may be divided into two kinds, i.e. close correlation and quasi-close correlation. Our statistical results are as follows: (1) For the vertical and horizontal currents, the rates of close correlation are, respectively, 29% and 10%, and those of quasi-correlation are 50% and 30%. (2) Some flare kernels are correlated with both kinds of current, but most flare kernels are correlated with only one kind. (3) There is a small percentage (about 6%) of flare kernels that are not correlated with either kind of current. (4) The two kinds of current supplement each other, and this may be noted in flare forecast. Our analysis also reveals that the places with strong shearing of magnetic field correspond to intense vertical currents and the places with large gradients of magnetic field in the vicinity of magnetic neutral line correspond to intense horizontal currents.

A small δ-type active region was observed on September 14–18, 2000 at Ganyu Station of the Purple Mountain Observatory. It developed rapidly during its passage through solar disk and there was a stereo-typed spiral filament near the magnetic inversion line on 15–17th, Sept. Its magnetic axis made an angle 85° to the equator. On Sept. 16 it produced a major flare, 3B importance, having more intense geophysical effects. Using the vector-magnetograms the distribution of magnetic field lines was deduced. The analysis of QSL stereo-map made a discovery that there is a null or separator about such spiral filament which can be used to explain the formation of this major flare and intense mass ejection.

On September 14-18, 2000, a medium-small solar active region was observed at Ganyu Station of Purple Mountain Observatory. Its spots were not large, but it had a peculiar active filament. On Sep.16, a flare of importance IIIb with rather intense geophysical effects was produced. Our computation of the magnetic structure of the active region reveals that the rope-shaped filament was concerned with a low magnetic arc close to magnetic neutral line. An intense shear of magnetic field occurred near magnetic rope. The QSL analysis shows that a 3-D magnetic reconnection might appear in the vicinity of filament, and this can be used to interpret the formation of a large flare.

The magnetic field configuration in a super-active region (i.e., a large, island-like delta -type spot) is simulated with a non-linear force-free field that varies slowly with time. Such a complex magnetic field exhibits the main observational characteristics of vector magnetic fields. These are the extreme inequality of positive and negative magnetic fluxes (the ratio of positive and negative fluxes is 1:6), the U-shaped magnetic inversion line, as well as the difference between dipoles and quadrupoles. The results of simulation may be used to interpret the following observed phenomena: (1) Large flares often occur in regions of mixed polarities or quadrupoles near a U-shaped inversion line. (2) In the quasi-bipolar regions near U-shaped inversion line, almost no large flares appear or there are merely small flares. (3) Large-scale rotational motion and flux emergence within active regions may give rise to quadrupolar magnetic topological separatrices and produce large current sheets, and hence intense magnetic reconnections and major flares are induced. The method used in the computation of non-linear force-free fields is a natural extension of Woodbury's relaxation method in polar coordinates. The common ill-posed solutions are thereby avoided. This makes the linear and non-linear force-free solutions to be mutually consistent, so there is a continuous and smooth transition between the two.

We carried out photometric measurement of the D3 line in the flash spectrum of the 1983 solar eclipse. After a reliable calibration we derived the distribution with height of its absolute surface brightness and hence that of helium density. The results roughly agree with the previous observational results. Our result fits in with the statistical relation found by Gulaev, that the absolute brightness of the D3 line decreases with increasing sunspot number.
